Post subject:  A Sort of Cousin

We were to beign or end with a quote from the CS so I stole a rather long quote as the first half. The last line of course could also be said to be a quote.

That afternoon was free for Robin, so when half-past twelve came, she gathered her books together, and sorted them out carefully. Gertrude, standing near, watched her.

‘You do not stay this afternoon?’ she asked.

Robin looked up. ‘No; this is a free afternoon. You will have prep till three, and then go for a walk till half-past four. After that, you will have tea, and then prep again till six. Then you do what you like. Get Amy and Lorenz to explain about the Hobbies Club to you. We hold it in the evenings, so I can’t come except just occasionally, now that we have black-out. But Daisy and I do what we can at home.’

‘Daisy? Who is she? Your sister?’

Robin thought carefully. ‘She’s a—a sort of cousin,’ she said at last, for to explain the very complicated relations would have been something of a task. ‘We live with my sister, Jo Maynard. She lives at Les Rosiers, out at Torteval. Haven’t you seen Daisy? She’s in the Third Form.’

‘I’ll look out for her,’ promised Gertrude.
Then she added, what do you mean a sort of cousin?

‘Well my father had to go to Russia and so he left me in Austria with Miss Bettany, she’s Mrs Russell now, who owns the school. Her sister is Mrs Maynard, only she was Miss Bettany too in those days. Then Mrs Russell’s husband’s sister, who was Matron Venables, came back from Australia and she had two children, well actually five but three of them died in Australia. And then my father died along with Signor di Bersetti; he was Bette Rincini’s husband, and so the Russells sort of adopted me. Then Mrs Venables died and when Joey, I mean Mrs Maynard, married Dr Maynard; that was all just after we escpaped from the Nazis in Austria, I went to live with them and so did Daisy and Primula.’

Daisy paused. Goodness, this girl asks more questions than Jack Lambert! She thought, conveniently ignoring the fact that Miss Lambert wasn‘t actually born yet.

‘So Daisy’s my adopted sister’s brother in law’s niece – ‘ she stopped, mid-sentence for, overwhelmed by the complexity of Daisy’s family relationships, Gertrude had fainted.

She lay there still, grey and to all appearances dead.
