Just a small drabble which came to me rather suddenly.

As her Devil had been more active than ever before recently he convinced Margot to feel fairly safe in bringing out the contraband she had snuck into school over the weekend, when the triplets had spent a delightful day in company with their mother and father. It was thanks to the latter that Margot was now able to brandish the bottle of whiskey, which she had found hidden in his desk drawer when she went to find some paperwork for him, and which she had been unable to resist.

Her co-conspirator was, as ever, Emerence Hope, an imp of the first water, and not averse to a scheme even such as this. They had decided that it might be wiser not to invite anyone else, and had settled down in the Fifth form common room – one of the furthest from Matey’s room and therefore the least likely to be disturbed by her sometimes superhuman hearing – for a very grown up version of a midnight feast.

While Joey and Jack believed in keeping their children young, they knew that certain things were necessary after a certain age, and since the beginning of the holidays the triplets had been allowed very weak glasses of wine, watered down heavily, with their meal. Emerence had tried a mouthful more than once during her wild days, but neither girl had drunk properly before, and the half full bottle of whiskey proved to be a temptation too far.

But, as wild as she might be, even Margot seemed rather shy when it came to actually carrying through the prank. She knew the penalties attached if she was even caught with the bottle, and how she was to keep it hidden until it could be disposed of was a problem which hadn’t even crossed her mind yet. Emerence, though, if she did have any fears, wasn’t going to show them. She uncapped the bottle and took a mouthful with a defiant air.

She must have taken rather more than was wise, for she emerged coughing and spluttering loudly enough to call authority upon their heads, tears streaming down her cheeks. She handed the bottle to Margot triumphantly enough all the same. Persuaded by her friend’s daring, Margot took an admittedly smaller taste. While the bitter, burning taste barely agreed with her, she couldn’t see any way out of it now, and so she continued to share with her friend, while still contriving to have considerably less.

Little did either of the sinners realise it, but their giggles and hiccups were rapidly growing louder, and for once fate was prowling the corridors. It emerged in the form of Matey, who had got up for a glass of water and heard the disturbance. There wasn’t even time to hide the evidence before she was upon them, and if ever there was a sobering sight, she was it. She took the bottle from their hands, examined it, and, suppressing the twinkle in her eye, decided that for tonight, at least, nature would be best left to take its toll.

Margot managed to shakily point out how much of the bottle she thought had been left when they began drinking – an estimate far below the actual amount – and Matey grimaced forebodingly. Emerence dug her slipper toe into the carpet, and Margot lowered burning cheeks, but Matey said nothing for now. Instead she lead them in a grim silence far more frightening than anything she could have said to the San., whence she bade them climb into two beds side by side.

“Take this,” she ordered, when she came back to find them tucked meekly under the sheets, even Emerence not being inclined to the most subdued of giggles after some of the looks that they had had from Matey. “I daresay that you will need to stay here for tomorrow, at least. If you feel fit for lessons, I’ve missed my guess. This will need to go to Miss Annersley to deal with, and of course your parents must be told.”

This last threat hit Margot far harder than her friend. She knew exactly what her parents would think of her conduct, and she shuddered when she imagined what her father would say about his alcohol being taken. Now she really thought it over, Margot realised just how close to theft she had come.

Matron left them after that, with strict instructions not to talk, and her dose of hot milk meant Emerence was soon snoring gently. Not so Margot. She waited until she was sure that Emmy was asleep and proceeded to cry until she could cry no more, and weariness forced her to shut her eyes. It would have been best for her if she had remained in a state of pleasant slumber for some time longer than she did.

She awoke the next morning to the most unpleasant headache she had ever experienced, and when Nurse pulled the curtains open she thought she would never again feel such animosity towards the sun. She had barely got over this and managed to choke down her breakfast – which, it was on record, Emerence did not manage a third of before she gave up feeling too sick – when Miss Annersley arrived, and read the pair such a lecture as left both weeping copiously. They dimly realised they had just lost all pocket money for the rest of term, all evening entertainment to hemming sheets, and that as they could not be trusted they would sleep in separate rooms of the San. until it was felt that they could be again. As all of this was a considerable inconvenience to Matey, she didn’t spare her tongue at all, and both declared that that was a day they thought would never end.

In the afternoon, Jack Maynard came over to the school, and took Margot out to the rose garden where they were granted half an hours privacy. What he said to her neither ever told, but Margot never again touched a drop of alcohol, and it was a long time before her latest misdemeanour was forgotten.

I would have thought the headache would be enough to cure them. At least until they finished school

Now I'm wondering what Matey did with that bottle ;-)
