"Well - shall we?"
"I'd love to - I've always wanted to go."
"What shall we do? Go to a travel agent?" Bernie, short dark and capable spoke briskly. Rose looked wistful.
"That means waiting until tomorrow. Let's Google!" At home at the keyboard, she typed in the relevant words, then the two of them gazed at page after page, all quite delightful.
"They all look lovely but my brain has gone funny. Which one did we both like ? Was it the fourth or the fifth. That was about thirty pages ago, I think," Bernie muttered.
"It's pot luck really," said Rose in despair. "Why is it so difficult to choose a holiday? Let's just settle for this one. As long as it's Austria does it matter?"
"Wait," said Bernie, "just click on that one at the side there."
"A Chalet Experience," read Rose, "OK but that sounds like self-catering. Don't we want a hotel? "
"It says A Chalet SCHOOL Experience!" squealed Bernie "Click it!"
They both sighed in delight as a very pretty screen page lit up, framed in gentians and bearing the legend 'A Chalet School Experience - just for you' in Gothic script.

Rose followed instructions on screen and the girls gazed, mesmerised by photographs of the blue lake, a pretty chalet, girls in brown boating and swimming, flower-filled meadows and snow-capped mountains. Finally 'Click here to enrol at this fine educational establishment in Briesau by the Tiernsee in Austria'.
"Oh we must go on that. It sounds like being at the Chalet School itself - like mini theme park! " Bernie enthused.
"It certainly sounds different and we want to go to Austria because of the Chalet School," babbled Rose, " but I expect it's very pricey and probably fully booked. I bet that CBB lot have got in first, but let's try!"
After a few disappointments and overcoming the shock at the price, they made a booking, extensive details were required, a great deal of money extracted from their credit cards and finally it was done. They were going on a real Chalet School holiday.
"Wow!" said Bernie.
"What have we done?" Rose looked scared.
"We've booked next year's holiday. April in Tyrol should be lovely, though I would have liked the summer or even the deep snow of winter. Well, we've got six months to pay that outrageous sum. Aren't you pleased?"
Rose smiled. "I can't wait!"

Post subject:  A Chalet School Experience

The next six months did not fly by, but the girls worked, earned and most importantly prepared for their trip by re-reading the first dozen books in the Chalet School series. Not that they needed to, as all things Chalet had been their passion since schooldays. The information pack they recieved seemd sparse and set them to wondering what form exactly their holiday would take.
"It's like a Mystery Tour," Bernie observed."Nothing about what we will see or do. Just air tickets to Innsbruck on April 30th , stay one night at the Europe then it says 'You will be met on the morning of May 1st in the foyer of the Europe Hotel and escorted to Briesau' See, they are pretending that Pertisau is Briesau."
"I think they will have done up a hotel like the school," mused Rose. "You know, dormitories and a spiesesaal with checked cloths and jewel coloured glasses."
"Yes, and maybe school themed activities like a sheets and pillow-cases party - or crinkly crepe paper!"
"And expeditions, I want lots of expeditions, to Innsbruck and perhaps Salzburg!"
"What about Spartz and the Salt Mines?"
"They were Salt Caves not mines, you muppet!"
"Oh yes, well up the mountains then on picnics and to find Joey's Cave!"
"What would be fun would be if there were people in role, you know, like at Disney."
"You mean a Joey in a big plastic head?"
"No, that would have to be Mary-Lou!"
With many discussions of this nature the time did pass, and eventually, tall fair Rose, and short, dark Bernie made the jouney to Innsbruck with no mishaps, enjoyed a delicious evening meal at their hotel on the last day in April, slept soundly and after a breakfast of coffee and rolls, waited anxiously for their escort. Promptly at ten o'clock, a lady came through the swing doors from the street and approached, smiling. "Rosemary and Bernadette? I am here to escort you to Briesau. My name is Miss Maynard."

Some more. Apologies for lack of accents etc

Rose grinned, "How appropriate!" she said gaily. Bernie was thinking that the woman looked exactly how she imagined Maynie 'a jolly English woman.'
Miss Maynard became brisk,"We haven't any too much time, as we have a train to catch. I'll show you where you can change." Bernie raised her eyebrows behind the lady's retreating back and Rose shrugged. Dragging their wheeled suitcases behind them they followed. They were ushered into a small room, larger than a storeroom and containing nothing apart from two large leather trunks bearing their names. Miss Maynard flung back the lids, "As you can see, your trunks were misdirected here, so I suggest that you change into your uniforms," she looked disapprovingly at their jeans and bright jackets, "leave your things here, and I will wait for you by the front door. The hotel people will send it all up to Briesau." She left and the two fell on the trunk, holding up articles of school uniform in brown and flame in glee.
"Oh bliss!" cried Bernie, "A full CS uniform. Come on girl - strip off!"
Rose held up a tunic in disbelief," It's the real thing and very good quality."
"It should be, the price we paid," said Bernie happily, "they'll be hired I expect. Oh God a vest! Long brown stockings!"
"How do you hold them up? I can't find a suspender belt."
"Are you expecting a little black lace number? I think we use these!" Bernie waved what looked like rather unattractive scrunchies, "Garters!"
"As in 'guts for'?" queried Rose, struggling with her tie. "There. Do I look fourteen. Pity there's no mirror." They looked at one another, appalled at what they saw.
"Whoever said school uniform was sexy, was - wrong," said Bernie in a small voice. " Do I look as awful as you?"
"Worse! They are so lumpy and scratchy and hot," wailed Rose.
"We'll get used to them and I quite like the blazer, I'd forgotten about all the secret pockets."
They tidied away their own things, closed the trunks and sallied forth feeling extremely self-conscious, but their guide merely nodded approvingly and led them out into the sunny streets of Innsbruck, pointing out places of interest as they went. It was only when Miss Maynard was buying tickets at the station that Rose was able to whisper, "I'm scared!"
"Me too. I feel like a schoolgirl off to a new school!" was Bernie's contribution.
They were stil giggling when Miss Maynard swept them off on the first part of the journey which took them out of the city to the foot of the mountains.
"Here's Spartz," announced Miss Maynard, " now the next part of the journey will be very different!" It was. The little open carriages took them higher and higher, stopping occasionally at a tiny wayside station until they tumbled out at the terminus.
"Seespitz!" cried Bernie delightedly "Oh look at the lake!"
"It is so blue," observed Rose dreamily.
Miss Maynard smiled at their delight and suggested that they take the steamer across to Briesau to save time. Standing at the rail with a soft breeze in their hair, looking at the mountains reflected in the waters of the Tiernsee, Rose and Bernie felt that they had died and gone to Heaven.

Post subject:  A Chalet School Experience 25/9/07

After leaving the steamer it was a short walk along the lake path by the wooden fence, through the wicket gate and there it was. The Chalet. It was big, balconied with a steeply pitched roof. Inside was the square hall, painted cream with floors and panelling in a dark pine, scented pleasantly of lavender and beeswax. Miss Maynard led them through a door on the right. "They're here!" she said brightly. A young woman with dark curly hair caught in a knot at the back of her head rose to greet them. She was wearing a dress of a dull cherry-red which brought a little colour to her cheeks and with her delicate features and beautifully-shaped brown eyes, she was easily recognisable as Madge Bettany.
"Madame, these are two new girls, Rosemary Haynes and Bernadette Winter. Girls, this is Miss Bettany and Mdle Lepattre." Another lady, older and unmistakably French got up from a desk at the far side of the room.
"Welcome to the Chalet School," said the Head warmly,"I hope you will be happy here. Miss Maynard would you be so kind as to send Bette to me? Thank you."
"It is good to see you, petites, Bernadette and Rosemarie. You sound like French girls!" Mdle laughed. Light footsteps could be heard outside and then a brown-haired, deeply tanned girl appeared and curtsied. "Madame?"
"Bette dear, please take charge of Bernadette and Rosemary and show them what to do and where to go." Not daring to look at one another, Rose and Bernie curtseyed gravely and followed their mentor.
"What pretty names you have, Bernadette and Rosemary."
"Are you supposed to be Bette Rincini?" asked Bernie bluntly. Bette laughed, "That's an odd way of putting it - is that English slang? But yes, I am supposed Bette Rincini."
"You are very good. Are there any others?"
"Lots of others whom you will meet at Mitagessen, but first I must show you your dormitory." The word 'dormitory' acted as tonic. "I knew it," muttered Rose as they gazed happily at the bright room with its rows of beds and yellow curtains. Two cubicles at the end of the room were assigned to them. At the foot of each bed stood a small, old-fashioned suitcase.
"Ah, Eigen has brought up your cases."
Stunned, Rose and Bernie opened them, never having set eyes on them before in their lives, but were thrilled with the contents of stripy pyjamas, slippers, dressing-gowns, towels and sponge bags. Bette was soon showing them where to put everyting.
"Oh look at the bureau!"
"And the hook in the pole for my dressing-gown!"
"Hang your coats in the cupboard and hats above. Blazers are kept in the cloakroom - this way."
"Splasheries!" whispered Rose.
"Yes," Bette had overheard them, "it must be an English word - yes?"
They had to hand it to this girl, she was brilliant, but there were so many questions they longed to ask. Did she audition for the job? How much training? It seemed much more fun to be in on the role-play rather than as just a guest, but something stopped them asking. It was part of the game, the fun, to 'suspend disbelief.' The accuracy and attention to detail was amazing, but not always pleasant as when they discovered stiff crackly paper in the loo.

Today's instalment...

They had just finished washing and tidying when a gong sounded.
"Come, I will introduce you to the other Middles." said Bette.
Not knowing whether to be pleased or insulted at being dubbed Middles, the two composed their features and let themselves be led to the spiesesaal which lived up to their expectations. It was all there: checked tablecloths, jewel-bright glasses and gaily painted pottery bowls and jugs. There were two long tables, down which brown-clad girls stood quietly behind their chairs. Bette placed them opposite two curly-haired girls, one fair, one dark.
"Margia and Evadne, may I present two new English friends, Rosemary and Bernadette. Look after them please."
"Can do Bette. Hey you two, I guess..." Whatever Evadne guessed had to be dropped as a bell tinkled and everone bowed their heads as Miss Bettany intoned a brief Latin grace. Then chairs were pushed back and the meal began. Bernie, looking down at her plate of veal in a tasty sauce, fried potatoes and salad, wondered, not for the first time, if she was dreaming it all.
"It's real nice to see you two, you'll love it here won't she Margie?"
Margia nodded and pushed her curly hair off her face before replying,"We manage to have a good time out of lessons. Oh good apfeltorte!"
Rose, looking at all the bobbing heads, wished that they all wore name tags as they do at conferences. Her attention was caught by a clear voice on her left.
"Maynie's parents are darlings and they loved the Robin of course. Her brother was there for a few days and he's going to be doctor like Gottfried." The speaker turned her head and Rose was confronted by a pair of very black eyes in a pale face, framed by a black bob. The girl grinned.
"Hello, I'm Joey Bettany and these are Frieda Mensch, Simone Lecoutier and Marie von Eschenau." The three girls smiled and nodded and Rose gaped as though seeing visions: dark little Simone, fair , gentle Frieda and beautiful Marie. Joey continued to chatter." Further along is Bianca di Ferrara and Paul von Rothenfels. It's a lot to take in at once isn't it? I know you must be Rose and your friend talking to Evadne must be Bernadette. Would you both like to see my puppy after Mittagessen? He's getting huge and is absolutely gorgeous!" She chattered on in this friendly fashion until bade to finish her pudding by the attractive dark-haired girl at the head of the table.
"You talk far too much Jo!"
Joey finished her last spoonful. "Sorry Gisela. I've finished now and it was quite delectable!" The girls near her giggled. It's like watching a film, thought Rose, or rather, like being an extra in a film. She found herself being wholly taken in and was looking firward to meeting Rufus...
Meanwhile, Bernie was hoping that Evadne would call someone a 'splay-footed, rubber-necked four-flusher'.

Some more

After the meal was over, Rose and Bernie did not need to be told to help clear the table or that a rest would follow. It was pleasant to relax on deckchairs in a secluded and sunny part of the garden.
Then Joey fulfilled her promise and, linking arms with the new girls hurried them over to one of several large sheds at the back of the chalet. Margia and Evadne came too, as well as a rather mournful-looking Simone. Jo opened the heavy wooden door of the shed cautiously and at once a ball of white, black and tawny fur hurled itself at her , barking rapturously.
"Down Rufus!" she said firmly and at once he sat uo obediently, his tongue lolling in an engaging grin.
"Good dog!" she cried, dropping down to her knees and flinging her arms round his neck. "Isn't he gorgeous?" The other lost no time in joining her, ruffling his fur and receiving lavish licks in return, though Bernie noticed that Simone was less than enthusiastic.
"He's lovely Joey. How old is he now?" asked Rose.
"Just about six months. I rescued him from a watery grave, didn't I old chum?"
The door creaked open at this point and a small head peeped round. "May we come in and see Rufus too please Joey?" A dainty six-year- old danced in, followed by another girl, a little older, very fair, but equally fairy-like.
"Robin!" called Joey, jumping up to hug the child. "I haven't seen you all day. This is Robin Humphries, my sort-of sister and Amy Stevens."
"My kid sister," said Margia casually as the small girls greeted the newcomers prettily. Rose and Bernie looked at the two Juniors in astonishment. Amy was a pretty little girl, but Robin had quite remarkable looks, with her floating black curls and huge dark eyes.
Jo had just finished brushing Rufus and replenishing his water bowl when a bell rang over at the school. "That's for the walk," said Margia, brushing down her skirt. "I hope it's the Dripping Rock today."
"I hope it isn't too far," growled lazy Evadne.
"Be my partner Simone?" asked Jo in a resigned sounding voice and was rewarded with a beaming smile that made Simone's solemn face look quite pretty.

Miss Durrant, tall, dark haired and twinkly-eyed, who was taking the Middles' walk, agreed affably to visiting the Dripping Rock. Rose and Bernie, looking and feeling like complete schoolgirls, set off demurely side by side along the lake path, glorying in the views and the soft Spring sunshine.
"It's fun, isn't it?" asked Rose, "Even better than we imagined."
"H'm," was Bernie's answer. "It's all so weird though. All these people look, talk and act like their characters, no slips, no mistakes, even the tinies."
When they left the main path the girls meandered in groups of three and four and the newcomers were joined by Frieda and Marie. Jo could be seen in the distance with the faithful Simone, struggling with an exuberant Rufus.
"Welcome to the Chalet School," said Frieda in her soft voice, , "we hope you have a happy time here."
"It's great fun," agreed Marie, "and often very exciting! Look, if you stop and lean forward you will get a very good view of the water." They watched the cascade of water well below them in fascination.
"It is past it's best," said Frieda thoughtfully. "In the early Spring there is much water."
"I think we had enough water last term to last us a lifetime!" laughed Marie, "what with the floods and Jo jumping into the lake!"
"Come along girls," called Miss Durrant, "time to go back for Kaffee und Kuchen."
"What happens tonight?" asked Bernie as they strolled along the lake path."Is anything planned?"
Frieda looked surprised. "Well after Kaffee you will unpack I think. I came up early so I have finished mine."
"And after Abendessen we will dance," added Marie. "There is no prep tonight of course. Lessons will begin tomorrow."
"Lessons?" asked Rose in surprise. Bernie found herself frowning at her friend, and as they entered the school side door, pulled her out of earshot.
"Of course there will be lessons, if we are living like real Chalet girls."
"I suppose so," said Rose slowly, not sure whether she liked the idea or not.
They perked up at Kaffee und Kuchen when at last they tasted their first twists of fancy bread.
"Scrummy!" was Rose's verdict. " "A bit like those sweet mini-croissants."
Simone was sitting close by."You have been then to France?" she asked eagerly.
"Well, yes, but I meant the ones you buy at Tesco."
"Tesco?"
"It's a kind of bakery," put in Bernie, swiftly.
After the meal, unpacking was the order of the day. In the Yellow Dormitory they found their trunks at the foot of each bed and Bette who kindly helped them. Rose and Bernie were taken aback by the vast quantity of clothes and were admiring their brown velveteens when a beaming tubby lady in nurse's uniform bustled in. "Well done girls, it's all looking ship-shape, just make sure it stays tidy," she said in a cosy voice and trotted off to check another room.
""Matey's a bit off-key isn't she?" muttered Rose. "She sounded quite jolly."
"That isn't Matey," returned Bernie smugly.
"What? Why? Who?"
"Think about it," said Bernie patiently, shaking her head and putting the last of her rather gruesome looking underwear in a drawer. "Do we change?" she asked the dormitory in general. Heads popped from behind cubicle curtains.
"Not first night," explained dark-haired Bianca pleasantly, "but we will tomorrow. The bell will soon ring for Prayers and then Madame will speak to us."

I'm now trying to get my head round the implications of Rose and Bernie knowing the girls' futures. They're going to find the lessons quite different to their own school experiences I think.

Thanks Mel.

Abendessen was as delicious as the mid-day meal.
"I'm going to put on stones," muttered Rose as she scooped up the last morsels of fruit salad and cream.
"Me too. We'll have to dance vigorously later to work it off."
But first came Prayers, with Mdle taking the Catholics and Miss Bettany the much smaller number of Protestants. Then they congregated for a beginning of term welcome. but Bernie's mind wandered as she cast surreptitious glances along the rows of girls. To the right of the Head was a stunning blonde girl who could only be Wanda von Eschenau, as well as tall fair Juliet with the plaits, Bernhilda, Bette and Gisela she had met already, so the remaining three must be Gertrud Steinbrucke, Luigia di Ferrara and Stephanie something or other. A thoughtt puzzled and teased at the back of her mind. Her gaze wandered along the row of Middles. That pretty girl with the long brown curls and a discontented expression must be Grizel Cochrane. Who was missing? She hardly heard the Head's words, until they were dismissed for dancing. She wanted to talk to Rose, but they were not allowed to sit and watch. There was always some girl willing to prod and push and twirl them through a selection of folk dances. Surprising themselves, they enjoyed it thoroughly. An opportunity to get together came when Mdle played a familiar tune on the piano.
"Come and dance with me," urged Bernie.
"I can't waltz!"
"Neither can I, just shuffle about." They got up and after a few false starts got their arms in the right positions. "Listen, I've been inspecting everyone here and have you noticed something glaringly obvious?"
"Er - no."
"Everyone is in character - yes?"
"You're right - they are! How very odd."
"So that makes us the only guests - right?"
"Yes."
"Which is bonkers. Why put on this whole show just for us?"
"Wow!" Rose clutched her partner in fright." Does that mean we have gone back in time - we really are at the Chalet School?"
Bernie grinned, "You are now entering the Twiglet Zone di-did-dee-dee-di-di-dee-dee. No of course not!"
"What then?"
"I think there has been a cock-up at HQ. That is, someone forgot to tell us that it was a role-play holiday. We are all supposed to be Chalet School characters. Can you guess who?"
"Perhaps we can choose. Bags I Mary-Lou!"
"We're in Tyrol muppet. Who isn't here and who could we pass for?"
"Joyce and Gillian Linton?"
"No, too early, go back, back, back. Gisela is still Head Girl remember."
Realisation dawned.

Thanks for the comments. I've just caught up with myself, so here's some more.

Rose blinked."Oh yes, Rosalie Dene and Mary Burnett of course. They aren't described much, but Rosalie was fair..."
"And Mary was dark and squat," said Bernie through gritted teeth. "And the names match. Wasn't Mary sometimes called Burnie, or was that when she went back to teach? Or was that Peggy?"
"But does that mean that we have to act like them?"
"No, it can't be that, because they use our names and think we are new girls. But I think we should have been them and somehow didn't get the information pack. Perhaps we sort of fill the gap."
"I'm glad in a way," said Rose seriously. "I don't want to be Hilda's drudge."
"I get a doctor," said Bernie smugly.
"Not a proper San doctor though," put in Rose wickedly. "He might take you off to some cholera-ridden place for the rest of your days."
Before Bernie could reply to this charming suggestion, a bell rang which meant bed-time for the Middles. Half past eight seemed a tad early, but they were both tired and glad to return to the Yellow dormitory which was already a home from home. With the curtains drawn, the cubicles were cosy if a little claustrophobic and chilly with the windows healthily open. They were both glad to climb into their new, rather scratchy pyjamas. Bianca kindly told them which washrooms to use and they set off, peeping into their sponge bags.
"Ooh - Pears' soap!"
"My toothbrush looks as though it's made from pig's bristles."
Before they could finally clamber into bed, another faint bell sounded.
"That's for prayers," explained Bianca," then Bette will come to turn off the light. "Good night both of you."
"Good night Bianca," they replied. Each managed a quick Lord's Prayer before getting into beds that were narrow and rather hard, though the plumeaux billowed over them and were far more downy than modern duvets. After Bette had switched off the light, Rose fell asleep almost instantly, but Bernie lay awake and wondered. It seemed a long, long time since they had woken up in the Europe in Innsbruck.

Poor Bernie feeling she matched Mary Burnett's description. So is everyone else role-playing? Or are they really back in CS time?

I quite like the idea of being Rosalie. You get to work with Hilda and you get to see exactly how the school works. Even if you do most of the work yourself.

I thought they were back in time, but the role play idea is very plausible. Definitely intrigued still.

The rising bell next morning was strident and rather alarming to people used to waking up with Wogan or the shipping forecast, but after an unusually long sleep, Rose and Bernie were ready for the rigours of the morning routine. Bette toook Rose to a bath cubicle and explained that she could have cold or tepid water in the mornings. Left to herself, Rose funked the cold as the Spring morning was decidedly chilly. I'm not a real Chalet girl she thought sadly, wishing that the water was hot and fragrant with bubbles. Meanwhile Bernie had stripped her bed and remembered to 'hump' the mattress, to Bette's surprise.
"It's to let the air circulate," explained Bernie, gravely, thinking that she had scored a point on Chalet lore. The plumeau of course was heaved over the balcony for its airing, as it was such a fine, dry day.
Frustuck consisted, as expected, of rolls, ivory butter and honey and of course bowls of very milky coffee. And afterwards there was the meticulous making of beds and tidying of the dormitory.
The walk that morning took them as far as Seespitz only, as lessons would start at nine. With some trepidation and armed with heavy wooden pencil boxes, they followed the other Middles to the larger classroom, where folding desks stood in rows. The girls they had met so far grinned at them amiably and they speculated on the others, such as Paula von Rothenfels and Sophie Hamel. They were wondering if the small dark girl was Maria Marani or Suzanne Mercier when Miss Maynard entered and they all stood up quietly. Rose and Bernie were pleased as well as relieved that they managed the work, especially Rose who had scraped a C at GCSE. They noticed that Simone was by far the quickest and was told to work by herself for part of the lesson. Joey huffed and puffed over the simplest problems running her fingers through her bobbed black hair until it stuck out like a golliwog's.
When Miss Maynard had departed, Rose asked Frieda, who was sitting next to her, what the next lesson would be.
"It's History with Madame," explained Frieda in her soft voice," and then French with Mademoiselle Lepattre."
"Do we get timetable?" queried Bernie, leaning across.
"We copied down the timetable at the beginning of the year," said Frieda, showing them her jotter. Rose glanced at it. "Oh good," she murmured, "Drawing after Break and Games this afternoon." Bernie stared at the jotter, rather surprised by the fact that it looked nearly full and slightly dog-eared. While Frieda turned away to talk to Marie, she flicked through it and found that it was full of notes, rough work and all the other odds and ends to be found in a schoolgirl's jotter in the third term of a school year. She found it slightly disturbing. Was there any need for such punctilious detail? She hardly attended Miss Bettany's discourse on the causes of the French Revolution, but as Joey dominated the lesson, it went unnoticed.
French followed and though they had forgotten a great deal of grammar, their vocabulary pleased kindly Mdle. "Well done mes petites," she beamed as she left the room.
"I feel exhausted," complained Rose at Break, as they drank milk and nibbled biscuits. "Was school always like this? They are all very well behaved aren't they? No larking about at all."
They were urged outside to enjoy the sunshine, so Rose and Bernie wandered down to the fence to look at the lake which looked glorious at this time of day. Bernie nudged Rose. " Look!"
In the distance, beyond the front door of the school stood Miss Bettany and a tall, fair man in his middle thirties. He bent to whisper something in the lady's ear, gave her a quick peck on the cheek, raised his hat and walked briskly away towards Seespitz.
"Wow- Jem and Madge snogging! Mind you, he is a hunk!"
"Yes - they have thought of everything and everyone haven't they?" whispered Bernie.

Sorry for the long gap. Here's some more.

Miss Durrant came to the lesson after Break armed with posies of Spring flowers for pencil sketches, to be coloured later. Everyone enjoyed this, apart from Joey who spent most of her time rubbing out her efforts ansd sighing gustily. Rose was given some praise, as was Marie von Eschenau who was the most gifted at this work.
When it was over, there was the inevitable scramble to tidy in the splasheries (where there were plenty of loos). Mitagessen today consisted of fried lake fish and fluffy potato balls, followed by glorious apricots in syrup. As it was fine, again the rest period was in the garden.
"We're allowed to read," pronounced Joey, flopping into a deckchair. "Do you have any books? We haven't got a library yet, but there is a book case in our form room that we may borrow from whenever we like. You must choose some after prep if you want to. Have you read this?" She handed over a thick, chunky volume. Bernie glanced at it casually, then took it, flicked through the first few pages and handed it to Rose with raised eyebrows. It was a first edition of 'A Go-ahead Schoolgirl' by Elsie Oxenham, with a bright, crisp jacket showing a girl brandishing a hockey stick.
"It looks good Jo," said Bernie faintly.
"My sister brought it back after the hols. It's not new of course, she got it in a second hand book shop for a bob!" Rose handed it back, privately thinking that the book in that condition would be worth thousands. Both girls were lost in their thoughts during that ret period, Bernie feeling uneasy and Rose frankly worried. What a strange set-up this was!
Games took place on the tennis courts, after changing into knee-length tennis frocks and white plimsolls. Neither were very good, though each new the rules and scoring due to watching Wimbledon. Grizel Cochrane came over to watch them. " More force needed Bernie," she called, " and Rose keep your racquet low. That's much better, but you need to follow through." She came across to demonstrate and then left them to criticise Simone. Jo rolled her eyes, but said nothing.
They had to return to the dormitory to change back into tunics, and Bernie reflected that they would have to change again into velveteens shortly. There was a welcome period of free time before Kaffee und Kuchen; most of the girls wandered down to the lake-side where the sun was still hot. A steamer was just pulling into the Briesau landing. Joey gave a shriek, "There they are!" and tore off pursued by an equally excited Frieda and Marie. Simone followed more slowly. They returned, chattering gaily, with two girls dressed in brown and a fair giant of a man who looked unmistakeably Tyrolean.
"Hey you others, here's Rosalie and Mary at last. They had to stay a day extra because poor old Mary has had a sprained ankle. Herr Mensch met their escort in Innsbruck and here they are!"
Rose and Bernie stared in disbelief at the tall fair girl and her short, square cousin...

A bit more.

Rose and Bernie had no time to discuss the arrival of Rosalie Dene and Mary Burnett. Kaffee und Kuchen was followed by changing, preparation and Abendessen. Finally, they found a quiet corner of their form room, which was used as a Common Room by the Middles. Bernie picked up a a jigsaw and they pretended to be immersed in it.
"So what's your theory now?" asked Rose in a defeated-sounding voice.
"Pass," sighed Bernie. "I just don't know. I never dreamt that those two would show up. It freaked me out to be honest."
"Me too. You don't think..."
"What?"
"You don't think that we are really here do you - I mean really at the Chalet School?"
"Nonsense," said Bernie, sounding far more definite than she felt. "What? Time-Travel in the Tardis?"
"Or is it a dream? And then we woke up!"
"We have to stay calm and be rational," said Bernie firmly. "We are here for a fortnight's holiday and then all will be revealed. Or not."
"So we just carry on and enjoy the experience?"
"Exactly. And it is what we always wanted and dreamed of, isn't it?"
Rose looked thoughtful. "Yes, I agree. I'm sure there will be some logical explanation at the end. We may be being filmed for instance -or - it may be a reality show!"
"Big Chalet?" Bernie shrieked, "You have been evicted, please leave the Big Chalet!" They laughed hysterically and felt a great deal better.
