Some time ago there was a contest where drabble sof 500 words were judged. this is one drabble of 500 words.Just came off my hat. Hope you like it. ************************************************************* Joey sat by the window looking out. As usual it was a wet day .A fire was burning brightly inside and the room was warm Outside it was grey and dull. Nevertheless, she was going to miss it. She realized suddenly. As long as she could remember she had lived here. Now they were going to leave it forever. All the bags were packed and ready. Madge was busy with last minute preparation. Tomorrow they would leave for Austria. Of course she was excited. However, she hated changes. Dick had left for India and she had no idea when she would see him again. Al least she had Madge. Nevertheless, it would be different when the school started. Madge had explained. She looked at the scene outside. Boring or not, this was her country. She did not remember India. She had spent whole of her childhood here. She knew they would never return to this street or this house. And that made her sad. It was like reading the last chapter of a book knowing that you would never be able to read that book again. She was leaving her old life behind and beginning a new one. She thought about the future. How would be it in school? Would she find it difficult to call Madge Miss Bettany? How many girls will be there? How will Grizel behave? Will she be homesick? It would be nice to go to the mountains. Austria as she remembered was lovely. The place where they were going to live was near the lake. Would it snow? Would they be able to skate on the lake? How odd it would be to sit in a schoolroom with a couple of girls! How different from the school here where there were at least 20 girls in one class. Would her friends miss her? Not that she had close friendship with the girls. Her cough made her miss school a lot. She was not even allowed to play in the playground. She hoped it would be different in the future. But how and with whom would they play? What if the school did not progress as Madge was hoping? Where would they go next? She got up and sat on a chair near the fire... This is how Cinderella must have looked in the flames and dreamt of her prince. Joey gazed at the bright flames with dark dreamy eyes. Why worry about the future. Let it take care of itself. She was going to be with her sister. What else did she need? It was going to be an adventure. Slowly she felt the excitement creeping in her body and soon her pensive mood began to evaporate. As the warmth entered her body, her eyes started to close and thus, when Madge came to call her for dinner, she was fast asleep on the armchair. Madge let her sleep before waking her up to eat. Tomorrow they would all start on their journey to Austria. |
