Joey Bettany woke with a start to find a worried Miss Maynard bending over her.

"Joey, do you know where Grizel is?"

Jo rubbed the sleep from her eyes and then looked across at the empty bed, neatly made.

"Oh she wouldn't be so rotten!" Joey gasped.

"What do you mean Jo? I intend to get to the bottom of this, so the sooner you tell me everything you know, the better. Where has Grizel gone?"

"I think she must have gone to Schaffhausen," said Joey reluctantly. "We had a row about it last night, but I never thought she'd really do it."

"Hurry up and get up now Joey, and come down to the Speisesaal as soon as you can. We must rearrange today I'm afraid, and Robin must miss out on her visit to the Zoo."

Miss Maynard hurried out of the room, and Joey got up and washed and dressed at speed. The mistress was justifiably annoyed, and Jo didn't want to risk any of that spilling over onto herself. When she reached the Spiesesaal she found the Robin tucking into her rolls and coffee, a very solemn expression on her face. of Miss Maynard there was no sign. Jo sat down and reached for one of the delicious rolls. She had little appetite, but knew that a failure to make a reasonable breakfast would mean trouble.

"We cannot go to the Zoo, my Joey," said Robin mournfully.

"I know, my Robinette." There was no time for more, as the door opened to revela a grim-faced mistress.

"Hurry up with your meal, girls. I'm afraid we shall have to forget the rest of our stay here and follow Grizel to Schaffhausen. I have asked Frau Betts about hotels there, and booked one for us near the station at Neuhausen, which is closest to the Falls. I'm sorry that our time here has to be cut short, but in the circumstances I can do nothing else. We shall go straight on to Innsbruck tomorrow. Joey, when you have finished, please go and pack your case, and Grizel's as well, ready for the porter to bring downstairs with the rest of our things."

Joey nodded and hurried to finish her meal. Before long they were sitting on the train to Neuhausen, all of them subdued and wondering what was going tohappen when they met up with Grizel again. Suddenly Joey had an awful thought.

"Maynie! How are we going to find Grizel when we get there? I mean, she could be anywhere, couldn't she?"

"I've been thinking about that Joey. I think that the best thing we can do is to put our things into the Left Luggage Room, and all of us walk to the Falls. That way we won't be likely to miss her, and you'll be able to see them for yourselves. They are certainly spectacular from everything that I've heard. If we do anything else we may very well miss Grizel, and I don't want her heading back to Basle if I can help it."

Joey nodded, and her eyes lit up at the thought of seeing the Falls after all. Unfortunately it was not to be. As they were directing a porter where to take their luggage, they heard Miss Maynard's name coming over the station announcements system.

"Would Fraulein Maynard, travelling from Basle, please come to the Information Kiosk, where an important message is waiting. Fraulein Maynard, please come to the Information Kiosk."

A quick word with the porter gave them the direction, and Miss Maynard hurried off, leaving the two younger girls, and the porter, to follow.

"What's happened?" asked Joey when they caught up with her. Miss Maynard looked at the message fluttering in her hand.

"That wretched girl has never been here!" she said. "She realised what she was doing, got out at a station further back down the line, and got the next train back to Basle!"

"Does that mean that we have to go back again?" asked the Robin. "Me, I am so tired of travelling."

"No Bubchen. I have rung the hotel in Basle and asked them to send Grizel back here. We shall go to the hotel here and have a hot meal. You may both rest until Grizel gets here, and then we shall get the overnight train to Innsbruck. I can't risk losing any of you again. I must wire Madame, and let her know that we shall be a few days early."

It was a very quiet and nervous girl that joined the little party in the early evening. Miss Maynard made sure that they had a hot meal, seeing that even Grizel ate enough to sustain her for the journey. Then settled them into their compartment for the journey to Innsbruck. It was left to Joey to sum up the day.

"We didn't see the Falls after all!"

That was so EBD that I have spent the last couple of days wondering why you had copied out a large chunk of Head Girl and posted it on the board. I was waiting for it to be an alternative story about how they decide that Grizel can't be head girl because of her escapade.

I've just finished reading Head Girl, and realised that that episode concentrates so much on Grizel that for once we don't see what happened to the rest.

Rotten end to the holiday for all of them, really.

Thank you, Pat.

It really did spoil things for everyone else, didn't it?

Post subject:  Re: The Falls of Rhine

It really did inconvenience everyone else - and Miss Maynard must have been very worried about Grizel.

Very authentic, and really shows how selfish and imopssible Grizel was being at that point. She was very lucky indeed to be allowed to be HG after that, Miss Maynard must have been frantic and Grizel certainly led them a merry dance.

Thanks, Pat, good to see this angle.
