Merry Christmas Lottie from your Secret Santa :santa:

Joey Maynard gazed out of the Saal window at the sky.
“It doesn’t look as bad as all that does it,” said a voice as Joey’s second daughter wandered in the room, “in fact, it looks fabulous with all the snow. I’m glad it’s going to be a white Christmas.”
“Morning sleepyhead, or should I say good afternoon,” said Joey with a smile.
The triplets had returned after their first term of University and, taking advantage of the quiet house, spent the last two days, mostly sleeping.
“Am I the last one up?” asked Con.
“No,” answered Joey, “Len is off with Reg for the day as it’s his day off, I think they went ski-ing and Margot was still sleeping when I last checked. What on earth have you girls done the last two months to make you this tired?”
Con gave a grin. “Len, Margot and I didn’t sleep on the train,” she explained. “I think we were so excited, to catch up again, we talked all the way to Interlaken.” “What!” exclaimed Joey stunned, “no wonder you’re all so tired, though Len seems to have recovered the best of all of you.”
“That’s cos I was trying to get all my writing finished before I came home and I knew I wouldn’t get much peace and quiet once I got here, or feel like writing, and I know Margot has been studying hard for her exams, for the same reason and she had further to travel than us.”
“I know,” said Joey ruefully. “I only wish I was so organised but I still have two chapters to correct with those blasted gallery proofs and I dearly would love to get them off by tomorrow next if I can.”
“What’s stopping you?” asked Con with a complacent smile, glad her own work was finished.
“Geoff left his Christmas costume behind and managed to forget it this morning,” replied her mother succinctly.
“Why on earth, was it here, in the first place?” asked Con startled. “I thought all the costumes stayed at school.”
“They normally do,” answered Joey, “but Geoff managed to get into a scuffle with Marie Courvoisier and tore part of it. He managed to smuggle it home in the hope Anna or Rosli would mend it and he could smuggle it all back this morning.”
“Then how did you find out?” asked Con with a giggle for the animosity between Marie and Geoff was legendary.
Geoff, the youngest of all the Maynard boys by five years was heartily sick of playing with the three sisters closest to his age, Cecil, Phil and Marie-Claire. He loved playing with Pat and Jean Courvoisier and escaping his sisters. Marie Courvoisier was a little tomboy who led her family; mischievous, and fun loving, she was her mother’s miniature and insisted on joining in her brother’s games at all opportunities. She and Geoff clashed continuously, both being equally as stubborn, equally as warm hearted as the other, and were equally into mischief. As Biddy Courvoisier once remarked they were destined to be either close friends or bitter enemies, and so far, both had maintained their feud, which had lasted, for the full eight years of their young lives.
“I heard Anna giving out to Geoff, about it all, and heard the whole story. I told him he had to tell Miss Robertson the whole story and he couldn’t wiggle out of trouble, but had to stand up and take it like a man. He was very aggrieved and said everyone blamed him for fighting, when Marie started it.”
Con giggled. “She does,” Con remarked, “and poor Geoff is the one that gets told off for fighting with a girl-not that Marie lets him; she fully confesses her share of it.”
“I know,” said Joey with a sigh, “but can you imagine them at 16 or 17 and still fighting like that.”
Con choked, “they’ll have out grown it by then,” she said gravely, eyes dancing.
Joey relaxed. “I know,” she said, “and Geoff really needs to be surrounded by more boys. He has had it hard, with Phil being sick, and everyone does tend to show her the attention, which means he does get left out a lot, with it all.”
“He does,” agreed Con determined to spend some time alone with her youngest brother after hearing that.
“Anyway,” said Con changing the subject. “Would you like me to take Geoff costume to school; I’m sure Miss Robertson is tearing her hair out over it all.”
“Would you Con? If I go, then I know I’ll get caught over there. I always do and I really want to get all the gallery proof’s done before school is finished. The girls and Geoff will be home tomorrow and the boys the day after. I’m so glad Ruey, Roddy, and Roger are travelling back with them. It wouldn’t feel the same having Christmas without those three,” and Joey relaxed.
“Mind if I join you?” asked a fresh voice as the youngest triplet walked into the room. “Morning Mother. I feel like I’ve slept half the day away, and could do with a walk.”
“All right,” said their Mother, “but you do need to eat something before you she admonished, I don’t want you fainting.”
“Yes mother,” answered the two in a sing song voice, both close to laughing; this had been a regular refrain while they were at school.

The pair soon set off after having a glass of milk and munching on an apple each. They walked along in silence, too busy eating to talk. They soon arrived at the school much to Miss Robertson’s relief.
“Geoff told me all about it,” she said, “and then confessed to leaving it at home. I didn’t know what I was going to do then.”
Con giggled. “Mother told me the whole yarn,” she said. “What are they up to now?”
“They’ve free play at the moment,” explained Miss Robertson. “I thought if they didn’t blow of steam, then there would be more people than Marie and Geoff fighting.”
“Good idea,” said Margot with a grin. “I know I was always revved up on the day of the school play.” The two walked into the kindergarten and were greeted by absolute bedlam.
“How on earth do you put up with this?” asked Con staring at the room wide eyed.
“Oh they soon settle down,” said Miss Robertson tolerantly. “They have another five minutes before they have to settle down again.”
“Geoff,” she called, holding onto a small boy running past. “Your Mother sent over your costume, you need to put it with the others.”
Geoff nodded, taking the parcel and sped off again.
“How is University for you both?” Miss Robertson asked.
“Good,” answered both girls in unison. “How’s Edinburgh Margot? I loved going there during my University days,” and Margot was soon eagerly discussing the University with Mops Robertson.
“Con,” screamed Phil running past, or rather limping past as fast as she go, with two other little girls in tow. “Can you tell us a story?”
“I don’t know,” said Con looking at Miss Robertson, “it depends if Miss Robertson minds.”
“Is it alright Miss Robertson, please?” Begged Phil, “please.”
“If Con doesn’t mind, then neither do I,” laughed Miss Robertson. “Do you mind?” she asked anxiously.
“Not at all,” said Con smiling, and taking her sister by the hand sat down, “what kind of story would you like.”
“A Christmas one please,” said Phil looking up at Con, while the word flew around the room, ‘Con’s going to tell us a story.’
The Kindergarten Form all sat down in the reading corner, and quietness finally reigned.
“I’ve never seen them so quiet today,” said Miss Robertson in awe. “I should have Con here all day.”
Margot grinned. “Her stories are legendary,” she said in sotto voice, and sat cross legged with the rest of the group. Phil clambered onto her sister’s lap, while Con had two other girls snuggle up to her.
“Now,” said Con, “what kind of story, does everyone want to hear.”
“Christmas,” shouted Phil.
“No, monsters,” retorted Geoff.
“A fairytale,” said a third.
“Something magical,” cried another
“No I want something fun,” yelled Marie, “something no one else has ever heard before.”
“Mmmhmm,” said Con staring up at the ceiling appearing to think deeply, “I know,” and she turned to the children. “I think you might, and I mean might, be old enough to hear this, but I don’t know. It’s the legend of the school. This story gets passed down through the generations but only to the true Chalet School pupils. Do you think they’re old enough Margot?” She turned to her sister.
Margot had no idea where Con was going with this, but entered into the fun.
“I don’t know,” she said slowly.
“We are,” shouted half the class eager to hear the Legend of the school.
“This isn’t going to be a story, Mama has told?” asked Geoff looking disappointed. “I want something new.”
“No,” said Con slowly, “this isn’t about any one person; it’s about the whole school. It’s a secret legend; one that isn’t told to anyone except to those who have been a pupil at the school.”
“Oooh,” breathed the class wriggling closer in their eagerness to be included
“What’s it about?” asked Phil.
“Now this is a kind of a fairy tale, and it’s called The Bill, the Abbess and the Evil Bobmother,” said Con, “and it all begins many, many, many years ago in a far away land.”

“Once upon a time many, many years ago lived a fair maiden. She was as kind, as she was fair. And all who knew her, loved her. This lovely lady was in search of a land for herself, and her sister. She had a friend known as the Wise Woman and together they travelled over the seas and across many lands before finding a beautiful, peaceful place on the shores of the bluest lake in the world.”
“’This is where I’ll live,’ she cried. ‘I will make a home here for my sister and I, and all will be welcomed.’ So she became known as the lovely lady of the land and girls started to flock to her. For this lovely lady was kind and loving, and all the girls loved and adored her; she was able to heal that lonely, desolate place some have hidden in their hearts and make flowers grow there instead.”
“Beautiful flowers?” asked Phil.
“Beautiful flowers,” replied Con softly, “Roses and lilies and every pretty flower there is.”
“She inspired everyone around her to be not just beautiful on the outside but noble, kind and good.”
Con caught Geoff’s eye and could plainly see, ‘this is boring, where are the monsters like I asked,’ written on his face. She winked at her youngest brother,
“But one day evil came to the land, an evil seen like no other. She was the most evil woman, known,” and Con’s voice lowered impressively, “as the Bobmother.”
“She screamed and shrieked, waving her talons about, all feared her,” and Con’s voice changed suddenly as she shrieked a horrible cry.
“I don’t think I like her very much,” said little Sophie Salenger, nearly crying. “She’s mean and scary.”
“I wouldn’t be scared of her,” boasted Geoff; “I’d squish her like this and squash all her gizzards out.”
“Yeah,” shouted all the boys, getting excited.
“I would sit on her and squash her flat,” said Pat Courvoisier.
“Yeah, me too!” shouted Michel Robinet.
“Well,” said Con smiling, “the lovely lady, didn’t quite do that, for she believed the best of people and said, ‘I’m sure she’s lonely and needs a friend,’ but the evil Bobmother refused to listen to the lovely lady, and continued to scream shriek until some of the girls of the land started to copy her and screamed and shrieked along with her.”
“The lovely lady held her patience until one day the mean and nasty and horrible Bobmother sunk her talons into one small girl and locked her away and refused to let her go. ‘She’s mine,’ she shrieked, ‘no one can rule me,’” and Con gave a series of blood curdling yells that made her small listeners shiver in their seats.
“But the lovely lady refused to be daunted by the evil, mean and nasty Bobmother and stood, her eyes blazing as they never had blazed before, never, she said, ‘never will you rule our fair land, for only love will ever rule here.’ And the evil Bobmother cowered before her and slunk off into the distance never to be seen or heard of again.”
“But how did she do that if she was so mean and nasty?” asked Marie looking confused, “I mean she got all the girls speaking like her.”
Con smiled, “because sometimes those who make the loudest noises are scaredy cats underneath and when someone stands up to them and say, ‘I’m not afraid,’ they run away scared.”
“Oh,” said Marie thoughtfully.
“Now,” said Con, “one day a charming Prince rode into the lady’s kingdom and took one look at her and said, ‘I have found my true love,’ but the lady loved her home and said, ‘no I can’t leave,’ but the prince had found his true love and after many battles he proved his worth and saved the lady’s sister and her friends and the lady herself. And at last the lady said, ‘you’re kind and good and noble, I will wed thee, charming prince.’”
“Ohhh,” sighed the young female listeners happily.
“Is that all?” asked Geoff disgustedly. “That’s soppy.”
“And what did that have to do with the legend of the Chalet School?” asked Simone Ryan confused.
Con hid a smile. “The story isn’t finished,” she said, “and I will explain what it all means at the end.”
“Now the charming Prince and the fair lady left the shores of the beautiful blue lake and went on a long journey and had many adventures of their own,” continued Con.
“Then what happened to all the girls?” asked Michel.
“Well, they stayed with the Wise Woman,” explained Con.
“Even the sister?” asked Marie interestedly.
“You don’t take your sister with you when you get married, you dope,” said Geoff witheringly
Marie opened her mouth to retort, but Con, noticing the altercation developing between the two, hastily continued with her story.
“Well the girls loved the Wise Woman, may be not as much as the lady, but still the girls came to the land. Many fell in love with the Wise Woman’s mothering heart and heard her wise words, but the evil Bobmother soon returned,” said Con’s in a low voice.
“This was a different Bobmother, and evil and nasty in a different way; for she was cold and hard. She tried to spread evil by saying only some girls were good enough to live in the land. The rest should leave. She tried to spread her poison everywhere. The Wise Woman discovered just how insidious the evil Bobmother was being and told her to leave and never return. She said how evil she was and no one had ever spoken so plainly to the evil Bobmother, that frightened, the evil Bobmother left, but she could never escape her words that one day the Wise woman’s words wreathed their magic and helped the evil Bobmother become a kinder person.”
“So the evil Bobmother can change?” Asked Marie.
“Yes,” said Con. “That very belief created the most amazing pact made in the land and a belief that went onto influence others outside the land.”

Post subject:  Re: The Bill, the Abbess, and the Evil Bobmother-Update 21/12

Just a little bit more

“The faraway land had changed and it was now being surrounded by so much evil. A band of Bobmother’s lived close to where the lady and the Wise Woman once ruled and this evil was starting to nibble away at the edges.”
Who was ruling the land now asked little Sophie from Con’s lap.
Con smiled, “the Wise Woman and the lady had asked the Abbess to care for the land and all who lived in it. She was wise and gentle and her rule was long. The Abbess was helped and supported by a woman strong and brave and true named the Bill.”
But that’s a boy’s name exclaimed Pat.
I know replied Con easily but it was her name. A name given to her by the girls she led. The Bill was not only famed for her sarcastic tongue but also for her brave and loving heart and the girls not only loved her but held her in awe. Now the lady and her charming prince returned to their home to warn the Abbess and the Bill about how the evil Bobmothers’ were about to attack their land and claim it for their own. Many wanted to stay and fight but many also had to leave, for at that time the might and the power of the evil Bobmother’s was so great that all who stood up to them died.”
“Oh that is so sad,” said the children listening.
“It was the father’s of the girls living in the land, who stayed behind to fight. The charming Prince and the lady helped all those who were sick to leave safely and find sanctuary elsewhere, for on their travels they had found another haven by the sea, where people could live in peace and harmony.”
“Many of the girls who lived in the land had to return to the land of their birth and live with their mothers and fathers again. This was hard and sad for these girls because their mothers and fathers lived amongst the evil Bobmothers and the evil Bobmother’s ruled their homelands.”
“Why didn’t their Mummies and Daddies let them stay?” asked Matilda looking sad. “They were safe and happy their. It’s not fair they had to leave.”
“The evil Bobmothers were so horrible, and nasty, they hurt anyone who didn’t do what they said. Only one was brave enough to stand up to them and he paid the price with his life,” said Con softly
“I don’t like the evil Bobmothers,” said Phil burying her head into Margot’s shoulder, while Margot cuddled her.
“Not many people do,” explained Con, “but, sometimes one of the hardest things you can do is stand up to evil like the Bobmothers, but if you do then, well wait and see.”
“The Bobmothers marched into the land and started to try and rule everyone and everything and there was a Great Parting of the Ways. Everyone decided to make a pact to say they would never let the evil Bobmothers rule in their hearts and no matter where they lived, they would always try and live up to the ideals, the lady, the Wise Woman, the Bill and the Abbess set before them: to always be good, kind and noble, and always stand up to the evil Bobmother. Everyone signed the pact and just in time.”
“Some of the of the good people of the land stood up for someone who was being tormented by the evil Bobmothers and the evil Bobmothers started to attack them. The Bill, who was loyal and true and so extraordinarily brave, fought back. The Bill was so scared for there were so many evil Bobmothers surrounding them. But the Bill refused to let the evil Bobmother’s win and clasping onto all her courage she could find, with all of her might, gathered the girls under attack to her and helped them escape. They were shown a secret passage by a kind gentleman and the Bill led them through to safety. The girls were scared but the Bill refused to be beaten. ‘I will not let the evil Bobmother’s win,’ she said. And they didn’t.”
“Oh” sighed the group, “that was so brave.”
“For despite being scared the Bill refused to let her fears beat her but remain, brave, loyal and true through it all,” said Con with a smile.
Silence fell over the group for Con couldn’t continue her story just yet for the Bill’s bravery through that entire event always brought a lump to her throat, every time she thought about it. She could never imagine just how the Bill had managed to lead the girls to safety along with her father and Gottfried Mensch.

Post subject:  Re: The Bill, the Abbess, and the Evil Bobmother-Update 21/12

“What happened next?” asked Geoff. “How did they get rid of the Bobmothers?”
“Little by little,” answered Con, “one step at a time.”
“The lady and the charming Prince had indeed found a beautiful new home by the sea and it was there, some of the girls that had been scattered returned slowly returned home again.”
“Everything seemed bleak and sad at first but something happened that gave them hope. Two handsome princes, who had wooed the hearts of two young girls, had stayed behind to fight the evil Bobmothers and had been captured by them.”
“Oh no,” said Michel horrified, “did they kill them too?
Con shook her head. “No, and it was because of the pact made before the girls had to leave their home by the lake.”
“One of the girls told their brother how they would fight the evil Bobmothers and not do evil like the evil Bobmothers did. He was so impressed by that, he helped the two handsome princes to escape from their dungeon and find their way home again. He decided he would help in the fight against the evil Bobmothers and get rid of evil from the land.”
“It took many years before the evil Bobmothers were finally vanquished once and for all,” continued Con. “They were scattered across the four corners of the earth.” “During this time, the Bill and the Abbess reigned over the land. It had moved from the sea, to the old country, where time began. They had faced many battles and were betrayed by one of their own who in a moment of unguarded rage betrayed her own, but through the Abbess she found forgiveness and her way back to the ideal set by the lady so long ago. And although she remained permanently in exile, she always tried to live up to those ideals once again.”

Merry Christmas Lottie and to all the other readers. Glad you've all enjoyed it even though it wasn't particularly Christmassy

“Now we come to happier time,” smiled Con, “for the Abbess began to rule over what was known as the Golden Age-the time of peace. The girls had moved and now found their home in the peace of the mountains.”
“The Abbess ruled with deceptive gentleness and many a Bobmother was vanquished because they didn’t realise that underneath her gentle exterior, lay a thread of impenetrable steel and like the lady, the Wise Woman and the Bill before her, nothing would stand between her and the girls of her land.”
“She inspired many a pupil who thought to follow the evil Bobmother’s ways and instead helped them follow the ideals of the land. Her voice was a soft and as gentle as a dove, that could turn into being as cold as snow, dripping ice as she spoke. Whenever a young girl of the land heard that voice, the shivered and shook and would do anything never to have such ice directed their way again. She felled even the most recalcitrant and inspired the fainthearted to be brave. And even to this day she still rules the land in the mountains.
The children sighed in contentment.
After a moment of silence, before Con had a chance to catch her breath, Phil asked plaintively, “but what does it have to do with Christmas? I wanted a Christmas story.”
“It is in a sense,” said Con slowly, “for Christmas is the time we remember the Christ Child and he came to bring peace, to help us to be good, loyal and true, and not follow the ways of the evil Bobmother.”
“Oh, okay,” said Phil accepting Con’s reply.
“But I thought it was a legend about the school,” complained Matilda.
“I know, I know,” shouted Marie, who had been thinking hard during the entire story. “The Bill is Great Auntie Bill.”
“Who?” said Con confused.
“Great Auntie Bill,” repeated Marie, “she runs St Millies. Mummy stayed with her when the school left Tyrol and before it started in Guernsey. She called her Aunty Bill cos everyone called Miss Wilson, Bill at school.”
“That’s right,” said Con smiling.
“And the Wise Woman must be Mademoiselle LePattre who took Mummy in when she was all alone,” continued Marie.
“It is,” said Con.
“Does that mean Auntie Madge is the lady of the land?” asked Geoff eagerly.
Con nodded.
“But Uncle Jem isn’t a charming Prince,” burst out Phil, “he’s so old ,and has gray hair.”
Margot choked back a laugh.
“But he was Auntie Madge’s charming Prince,” explained Con gravely, holding back the laugh that threatened bubble within.
“What about the Abbess?” asked Michel confused.
“That’s Miss Annersley, isn’t it,” shouted little Sophie in excitement, “I heard some of the big girls call her that.”
“She is,” said Con simply.
“So then who is the evil Bobmother,” questioned Michel.
“The evil Bobmother represents all that is evil,” explained Con softly. “When we choose to do good and stand up for what is right then we choose to live by the ideals of the Chalet School and if we choose to do wrong, then we choose to follow the evil Bobmother, and once we start down that path, it becomes harder to turn back.”
“Does that mean you’ll never be good again?” asked Matilda frightened.
“You can,” smiled Con reassuringly, “remember the Wise Woman helped the evil Bobmother and so did the pact the school made.”
“Did the school really make a pact?” asked Marie eagerly.
“It did,” said Miss Robertson joining in on the conversation. “It’s called the Peace League. When I was at school here, we were all allowed to sign it when we were thirteen.”
“May we?” asked Pat eagerly.
“And me,” came a dozen other voices.
“I’m sure Miss Annersley will let you when you’re thirteen,” said Miss Robertson reassuringly, “why don’t you ask her?”
The group turned and saw the Abbess sitting against the wall smiling at them.
The whisper went around the room, “The Abbess is here.”
Con went darkly red, wondering how long Miss Annersley had been sitting there for. Margot’s eyes twinkled.
“I think when you are thirteen you will certainly be able to sign the Chalet School Peace League,” said the Abbess gently, “and we’ll discuss it with you then.”
“Even if we’re not pupils here any more?” asked Michel
“Absolutely,” replied the Abbess. “You may not be pupils here then but I’m sure the Chalet School ideals will remain a part of you. Now I think its time for Kaffee und Kuchen and so you should thank Con for telling you all such a lovely story and line up to go to the Speisaal.”
“Thank you Con,” chorused the group.
“I thought I would see ice dripping off her voice,” said Geoff to Pat disappointedly, as the walked out. “She sounds like everyone else.”
Margot choked, and unable to hold back, went into gales of laughter.
Miss Robertson and the Abbess joined in.
“I’m sure he’ll see it one day,” said Margot infectiously, “and then he’ll wish he hadn’t.”
And the four left the room laughing.
“Con,” said the Abbess quietly as they were leaving. “That was a wonderful way of passing on the school’s story. Thank you.”
“I’m glad you liked it Auntie Hilda,” replied Con softly, “and Merry Christmas.”
“And may we all continue to vanquish the evil Bobmothers, in the New Year,” said the Abbess with a mischievous smile.

That was lovely, Santa. I loved the humour behind the more serious message.

Poor Jem no longer a Prince Charming except to Madge.

I am sure Margot is right that Geoff will see the icy side of the Abbess

I'm sorry - things have been a bit hectic recently, and I've only just caught up with all the rest of this. The good thing is that I did get to read almost all of my lovely fairy story (as told by Con) in one go.

Thank you very much for my special chair, Santa. It's extremely comfortable.

Quote:
“I wouldn’t be scared of her,” boasted Geoff; “I’d squish her like this and squash all her gizzards out.”
“Yeah,” shouted all the boys, getting excited.
“I would sit on her and squash her flat,” said Pat Courvoisier.

I love the boys' reaction to the first appearance of the Bobmother.

Quote:
Silence fell over the group for Con couldn’t continue her story just yet

I like the fact that even Con is so moved by the story that she has a lump in her throat.

Quote:
to the old country, where time began

What a wonderful way to describe it!

Quote:
And even to this day she still rules the land in the mountains.

And that's where I always imagine her, even though I know she'd be far too old to be Headmistress by now, even assuming that the School was real!

Quote:
“But Uncle Jem isn’t a charming Prince,” burst out Phil, “he’s so old ,and has gray hair.”

Out of the mouths of babes...

Quote:
“Con,” said the Abbess quietly as they were leaving. “That was a wonderful way of passing on the school’s story. Thank you.”

I couldn't have put it better myself, Hilda - it's exactly what I was thinking. It's a very clever retelling of the history of the School.

Thank you very much indeed, Santa! :D I shall save this so that I can re-read it whenever I want to.

Thank you, Con (and Lottie's Santa, of course. ) What a fine retelling. :) I'd wondered about that title!
