Post subject:  Standing up to Matron? (short & complete)

This was inspired by the thread called “Women: When Staff Go Bad”.

It is set during Kathie’s first term.

It was a cold winter’s afternoon, and a group of mistresses were sitting in their common room before a blazing fire. Most of them were chatting gaily but one sat in silence, pondering.

“What’s wrong Kathie?” asked Biddy O’Ryan, suddenly noticing her. “You look as though you have the weight of the whole school on your shoulders!”

Kathie looked up and laughed, “Not in the least! I was just wondering…is it usual for Matron to send for the girls during school hours? I was taking Inter Fifth for geography this morning and three of the girls were called out at different points of the lesson. It was most distracting.”

Biddy groaned sympathetically, “Oh very usual indeed unfortunately! Matron is a stickler for tidiness. Only yesterday one of the girls was called out of my class to go and tidy her drawers. I wish they’d tidy up properly before they come to lessons. It would save us all a lot of inconvenience.”

“Of course, I went to a day school, so I’m not familiar with these things, but surely,” said Kathie, “Matron could ask them to come at breaktime or in their other free time to tidy their cubicles? I don’t see why they are called out of class to do it.”

“That’s a good point actually,” said Rosalie, who had been listening to their conversation with interest. “I’d never thought about it before, but it would be so much more convenient for the staff if the girls went in their free time.”

“I suppose it’s just the way it’s always been. I know I wouldn’t want to keep Matron waiting for a second, even now!” laughed Biddy.

“Perhaps someone could ask Matron to begin sending for the girls at breaktime?” asked Kathie, cautiously.

“Yes, but who?” replied Biddy. “I surely wouldn’t want to try! I can just imagine the look she’d give me! I’d soon feel as I did when I was a Middle who’d forgotten to hump her mattress!”

“Maybe the Head would ask her. Matron would listen to her, after all,” said Kathie, who held the Head in great respect, and was actually still a little nervous of her.

“Oh no, my dear! That would never do!” laughed Rosalie. "I can’t see the Head even broaching the subject with her. I do believe when it comes to Matron even Miss Annersley would not dare to interfere any more than the meekest Junior would!”

“I agree Rosalie,” said Biddy. “Matron is the most “on the spot” person I’ve ever met. I don’t believe she misses anything!”

Just then Matron popped her head around the staff room door. “Does anyone know where Yseult Pertwee is?” she asked, before noticing the small group deep in discussion by the fire. “Everything alright?”

“Oh, yes Matron!” replied Rosalie and Biddy together, startled.

“Good,” nodded Matron approvingly, and left the room.

Rosalie and Biddy let out a sigh, while Kathie, observing them, realised she would just have to get used to people being called out of her classes.

I guess this was one of the downsides of having so many old girls on staff -- all were afraid of Matey! :) Thanks, Selena.

I really thought for a moment that someone would stand up to her!

Thanks, Selena.

All too realistic!

That was very good, Selena - and the girls might actually be more tidy if they knew they might lose some of their free time, rather than be hauled out of lessons...

Thank-you.

I would be so annoyed if someone dragged pupils out of my lessons like that! That was a wonderful scene, Selena, with everyone being very bold until Matey actually appeared. Don't stop there, though - surely there's someone who's brave enough???? :D

Matron might even respect someone for standing up to her? Or maybe not...

Couldn't Jack say it's bad for the girls' health to be dragged out of lessons?

Loved that! I wonder what Matron would say if she could have heard - probably it's something she'd never even thought of and if someone actually said something she'd just go 'oh, ok, that's fine' . Loved the way they all pussyfoot round her, anyway!
