If what Joey does is wrong, unethical or not honorable, I will not continue.
Comments and criticism welcome.
Set in period of Trials for Chalet School after the Junior Middle's latest on Lost Property.
Here goes

Joey was sitting in her room and grinning. The phone call from Mary Lou’s cheered her up. The latest of the middles would be a good event for her next book. She needed to think. The arrival of the new addition to Maynard family was still long off and the continuous rain was depressing. She was planning a school story this time and needed few more ideas.
She settled herself comfortably and thought about her book. Nowadays she kept a notebook near her. It was to jot down her ideas. Ideas had a habit of coming very rapidly and then flying away when she sat down to write. Her best ideas were as she was waking up and she found the notebook very useful at such times. Jack would not allow her to write now, but she would keep the plot and characters ready.
The rain made a pitter patter noise and the room was cozy and before long Joey became drowsy and was about to fall asleep when an idea occurred and she sat up suddenly wide awake. But would it work? She contemplated on it for a long time forgetting to have her tea which was put by faithful Anna.
The result was a phone call to the Head. “Hilda, it’s me Joey. Will you do something for me? ““What?” “Will you tell @#$**$... that I know what she did last summer.” “What? What? I did not get the name. There was some noise in the background. What are you taking about? Who did what? How do you know?” “I cannot explain now. I have to go. Jack will be coming .Please do it. Please announce it. It is important. No. I cannot tell you now. Promise you will. Please Hilda and allow her to write tome or call me.” Joey pleaded Miss Annersley initially was not ready, but remembering Jack’s words of not upsetting Jo, finally agreed.
Joey grinned as she kept the receiver in place. The idea about making noise had worked. She sat back patiently awaiting results.
Miss Annersley made the announcement after Abendessen. Her eyes swept around the girls faces as she spoke. She was surprised to see more than one girl look guilty. ”What does Joey mean” ,she thought. So busy was she watching the girls, that she completely missed gasps coming from the staff table.


The result of the Head’s announcement was before her. A bunch of letters and notes. This was more then what she has expected. The continuous rains and flood had driven all thought of her prank from her mind. It had also kept away her visitors. She had worked very hard to save her things from getting wet. Her beautiful garden was in water. But luckily it had not entered the house.
She wondered how the girls were coping in the school. The telephone lines were also down.
She sat down and opened the notes one by one. Everyone was requesting for a meeting. Her eyes started to twinkle. This was going to be fun. Looking at the last letter she gave a gasp of surprise.
”What’s the matter old girl?” asked Jack entering just then. Looking at her delighted face he came eagerly forward “Am I the reason of your delight?” he asked hopefully”
”No. See how many letters I received from the school. Please allow them to come and meet me. I need them. It has been so boring for me.”
She started getting agitated “Alright. But not for more than 5 minutes. And I demand to be rewarded”
“Oh you solid lump of comfort! Of course you will be old man. Come here” she said raising her face to be kissed.
Getting worked up had always helped her get what she wanted.
She called Miss Annersley and arranged for the writers of the notes to be sent one by one.
“Joey! Do not be an idiot. I cannot send the girls without any reason.”
“Oh but you can send them with messages or books from the library. I need something to read to calm myself. I also need patterns from Mlle to knit. Some can come for tea. I can think of so many reasons” Joey started to breathe rapidly.
“Alright. I will see what I can do.”
Miss Annersely sighed. It was so frustrating. As a Head she could not talk about it to the girls. What had the girls done. Quite a number looked guilty. She suddenly sat up straight. There had been a crash after her announcement and faithful Karen had dropped a bowl of fruit. She looked so upset that Miss Annersely had a hard time comforting her. But if she remembered correctly there had been a gasp from the staff. What had the members of the staff done? She was not able to recognize the voice.

Miss Annersely was deep in her work, when there was a knock on the door. ”Enter!” she said and looked up to find Karen standing before her looking ashamed.
“Yes Karen. Any problem?” she asked in German. With lots of encouragement form the Head, Karen talked for a long time.
It seems that lots of food was left over after the girls ate and instead of keeping it for next day, Karen had started giving it to folks living in nearby village. ”But it is very kind of you to help the poor.” The Head exclaimed.” You should not have done is secretly.” But that was not the problem. Slowly it came out.
She had been charging money for it. A small amount but nevertheless….She had not spent the money. But how Mrs. Maynard knew about it was a mystery to her. She started at her employer with scared eyes. Hilda controlling her laughter gently scolded Karen and then as a punishment asked her to donate all the money to the church. ”Oh do not dismiss me!”, she cried.
“No. You are not dismissed. But think before you do such a thing again. If you had told us, we would have helped you.” “How can I face Mrs. Maynard?”
“Do not worry. I will talk to her. She will understand,” promised Hilda
Karen heaved a sigh of relief and went out thinking “Thank God. It was about summer or else I would have to confess about the rooms in the school which I hire to Guests coming in winter during school holidays.”


Miss Charlesworth was the next visitor. ”Come in. Sit down. Would you like to have some tea or coffee?” “No. I er ..I do not know how to say ..It was a great temptation. I always wanted to …. I do not understand how could she know.. I should have told you …I ..I came to say I am sorry.” She ended with a rush.
“My dear girl, I did not understand what you are saying.”
“You announced that Mrs. Maynard said she knows what I did last summer.”
“But I did not mention…”
“I know. But I ….”
“Alright. So what is your problem now.?
“ Will you please forgive me? I will not do such a thing again”
“My dear child! Yes .You are taking like a child. I do not know what you have done.”
“Last summer, I wanted to make a phone call and you had given me permission to call from your study. At that time I..”
“Yes go on my dear”
“I, I had sat on your chair and pretended to be the Head and had answered a phone call It was from Mrs. Maynard and she had called off suddenly as there had been a crash somewhere in the house. She rang off saying she will call later” The words rushed out rapidly. By this time Miss Charlesworth was blushing rosily.” Oh that is how she must have known. But how could she guess I was sitting…”
Guessing that she was really thinking that it was a crime, Miss Annersely calmed Miss Charlesworth and gave her coffee.
As soon as Miss Charlesworth left the room, Miss Annersely gave a whoop and laughed. “Joey does not know what Pandora ’s Box she has opened. I hope I do not get any more visitors tonight. I am aching all over with laughter”, she thought. Then she called Bill to share the joke with her.

The staff of Chalet school was busy doing their corrections in the staff room. Kathy Ferrars looked at Nancy Wilmot and raised her eyebrows. Nancy nodded her head slightly. Closing her book which she was correcting, Kathy got up and said “I am going to my room.” She again looked at Nancy who pretended not to see. ”Well. Good bye!”
She went to her room and waited impatiently. She looked agitated. It was whole 10 minutes before Nancy Wilmot arrived. ” Come in!. Come in! Why are you so late?Close the door” As soon as Nancy entered, Kathy locked the door.
“How could Mrs. Maynard know?” Kathy whispered.
“There is no need to whisper. No one can hear us” said Miss Wilmot placidly.
“But what are we going to do? We had taken care to see that no one was there”
“No one can recognize us. Our faces were well covered.”
“But how could she KNOW? What if Miss Annersley comes to know about it. Will we have to leave the school? I cannot live without the school now. Shall we go and apologize?
“Joey, if I remember correctly, was always on the spot. She had left school by the time the 2 schools were united. But I recall the Chaletians telling the Saints about Joey’s exploits.”
“Chaletians, Saints, 2 school what are you talking about?”
“Don’t you know after the Chalet school started in Tirol, there was another school started by Miss Browne.I was a student of that school. We were called Saints and initially we hated each other. But later Madame bought our school and we were united in one school . Madame had purchased our school building and was using it as their summer place and Joey used to visit the school quite often. I still remember the play OOFH *&^.. What are you doing? “ she said struggling with Kathy who had put her hand on Nancy’s mouth.
“Stop. Stop.I do not know nor do I care about your history. Tell me what are we going to do.?’
“I think we should go and talk to Joey. I am interested in knowing how she came to know.”
“How can you be so calm?”
“Oh I was born that way. Now calm down. We will go together. Do not worry. Joey will understand.”
“ But what will we say? On what pretext can we go?”
“You worry too much. Something will come.”
True to Nancy’s prediction, there came a message from Joey to Kathy. She , it seems, had found some models which she thought could be used for teaching Geography.
So Nancy and Kathy went to Freudesheim.
Joey greeted them joyfully.” Come in .Come in. Such a horrible weather! Good the rain has stopped now. But my garden is in water. Sit. Anna will soon bring coffee.”
This was so different from what they had imagined. Joey was her breeziest.
Kathy and Nancy exchanged a glance and Kathy decided to take a plunge. “Mrs. Maynard, I mean Joey, we did not mean any harm. And our faces were covered. It was for a good cause. Otherwise it would have meant loss of lots of money for Nancy’s cousin.”
“He had put all his money in the film. But on the day of shooting, half the chorus who was to dance was down with cold – a result of overindulgence in water the day earlier.”, Nancy added.
“Don’t you think you should begin from the beginning?” Joey said.
The story came out. Nancy and Kathy had been spending few days of holiday together. Nancy’s cousin who was making a movie and the girls had gone to see the shooting. But there was a crisis and half the dancers were down with cold and could not dance. The shooting was to be finished that day as the place they had hired was available for only one day. The director could manage 3 dancing couples but for 4th one there were no takers. He had persuaded the girls to dance. He pleaded and scolded and begged. In the end they had to agree after he promised to cover their faces with masks and put them in the back row and not focus on them.
“We had no choice. I could not, not help my cousin. He had put all his money in the movie.”
“The producer was grateful and he paid us handsomely. We refused but he insisted. We put all that money in the church collection box.” Kathy added.
“What are you going to do? Are you going to tell the Head? And how did you know about this?” Nancy asked.
“Nothing. No .It’s a secret.” answered Jo.
“Oh thank you. We were so worried.”
“Have your coffee. And here are the models,” said Jo with a straight face
“Did you really call us for the models?”
“Yes. Why else would I call you?” Jo replied blandly.
Nancy and Kathy looked at each other and without drinking their coffee rushed away to school blushing.
Jo having carefully watched them leaving the house gave way to her mirth.

I think that it's such a shame Kathy and Nancy couldn't tell their colleagues about that - they were doing nothing wrong, and it's only at the CS that it would be frowned on, at least that heavily, I think.

The next to arrive were the three naughty girls: Allie Russell, Judy and Janice Chester. They came in quietly. Joey watched them enter the room ”What have these imps done?” , she thought. They usually flung themselves on her whenever they arrived taking nineteen to dozen. Now this demure entry.
“Aunty we’re sorry. We will never do it again. Please do not tell our mother .Promise.”
“If I know what you are taking about then I will decide whether to tell your mothers or not. And I am not a sneak”
“How dare you call my aunt a sneak?” Allie turned angrily on Janice “I did not. She said the word herself” Janice replied hotly.
“Girls! Girls! Keep quite and tell me”
“If we keep quite how can we tell you” murmured Janice cheekily
Jo did not say anything but just looked at her. Janice was suddenly reminded of the head girl. Aunty Joey stopped looking like an aunt and looked more like the Prefect of Chalet School.
“It was last summer”
“We had seen anew type of bird on the seashore”
“Bill was telling somebody about a book which described about birds and beasts”
“But it was all wrong There were no pictures of any birds.”
“We did not know”
“Bill was very angry”
“He threatened to tell our parents”
“But he did not “
“He promised he wont tell anyone”
The girls kept interrupting each other in their eagerness to confess.
“No one knew.”
“What was the name of the book?,” asked Joey
On hearing the name she suddenly flushed. ”Why you bad girls! It is not a book for you. It is so adult that Uncle Jack does not allow me to read it.”
“We did not read it. We had opened only the first page when Bill caught us”, replied Judy opening her mouth for the first time.
“What is an adult book Auntie?” inquired Janice
“A book to be read by adults” was the reply
“And then we also tried to smoke” added Allie deciding to confess all.
Joey looked at them without speaking for a whole minute. Then she proceeded to give them a lecture which would not have been bettered by Hilda or Bill.
By the time she finished, the girls were feeling like worms. The worst thing was that she promised not to tell their parents but asked them to tell themselves. Luckily for them , when they did so, their elder sisters were with them to support them and they never did smoke even when grown up.
Joey was sober as she watched the 3 girls go away. What had she unleashed? Had she been thoughtless as usual?

Poor Joey. No wonder she acts so child like if Jack still censors her reading, though I think she is wrong to let him. If she read it she might of course recognise other things he controls which she is not in agreement with.

Joey was tired and ready for bed. She was waiting for Jack to come and say goodnight. It had been a tiring day. Her prank was showing it’s results. For the past 2 days, girls and mistresses had been coming form he school .It had been a hectic time. The tales of the culprits had mostly been routine ones, not very original: smoking in young girls not doing homework or going out with boys. The Mistresses had indulged in gambling (Miss Wilson), going out with the motorcycle boys (some younger teachers) The only original had been of the Dawburn Twins who had carried an alarm click in class by mistake and it had rung right in the middle of the dictation on French verbs. But before the Mistress I charge could investigate the matter (She had been badly shocked by the sudden noise), Matey had called for some urgent work and Prudence was not caught.
There had been lot of excitement following this and the event was forgotten.”Or I would have heard of it” thought Joey grinning
“Why are grinning like an idiot?”, her loving husband asked from the door. ”Oh! My prank is yielding a harvest” she said settling down comfortably. ”But Matey! Matey was also the one to write to me. What could she have done?” She sat up suddenly in the process banging her head on Jack’s forehead as he was bending tenderly over her. ”Ow! What solid lump you are Joey!” “Are you hurt? .I’m so sorry. I suddenly remembered about Matey.”
“Now do not worry about Matey”, he said blushing a bit.
“Jack .I believe you know.”
“Yes. But it is her secret. I cannot tell you. Goodnight dearest! Sleep well!?
“How can I? I am worried”
“Do not worry She did nothing wrong. Believe me.”
As she always believed in her Jack, she turned and was deep asleep before he left the room.

The final part of the Prank

“But Madge, I did not mean any harm! I just wanted some thrills for my book. I did not know that we harbored such a group of wrong does here.” Joey cries plaintively on phone
“Joey, you baby. You are not a child now. You are a grown up. Think. It is not necessary for you to know everything about the school and the girls. They are entitled to their private lives.”
“But I was not prying”
“I know dear, but your announcement created a problem. Matey is worried”
“I know. What do you think she must have done Madge which made Jack blush? Why are you quiet? Do you know? Oh how mean Jack is to tell you and not tell me. Is it something bad or mad?”
“Actually it is sad. I think I will tell you. You know Matey has a sister and she goes to her for holidays? Well all she I mean Matey does in the holidays is take care of her sister and family. She never had a real holiday and Jack saw that Matey looked tired and so he arranged to send her on a holiday to Mediterranean sea. They lied to her sister. Matey met a doctor there and all was going on well when the doctor’s wife came back and Matey was left all alone. She had written to me so I knew. Jack had promised not to tell anyone. Now if Matey thinks you know, she will never trust Jack again.”
“Oh that is too bad! I cannot let that happen.!No one can , no, should think Bad about my Jack..I will go and tell her that I do not know about her holiday”
“Joey are you mad?”
“Then what can I do?”, wailed Joey.
“Do not do anything now. I will think and tell you. Take care and try not to fret.”
Joey put the phone back in the cradle and with her chin in her cupped hands was
Soon in deep thought.
Mary Lou found her in this position. “Hello Aunty Joey! What are you thinking?”
“Mary Lou! What are you doing here?”
“I came to meet you. I have permission from the Head. I wanted to talk to you”
“You too Mary Lou? What have you done?”
“Nothing. But can you do something?’”
“What?”
“I do not know how to say this without sounding impertinent. You may scold me as much as you like. But don’t you think it is enough? You have the whole school even the teacher atwitter. No one look sat each other .Everyone has a guilty look on her face. Even girls who haven’t done anything are feeling targeted.”
“I do not know what are you talking about.”
“Your announcement. I guess you must have enough material for your new book”
Joey stared at her. She knew Mary Lou was quick. But she had not expected her to be so perceptive Joey had the grace to blush.
“Alright. You are correct. But what can I do now?”
“I think you can come and make an announcement that you now know what you wanted to know.”
“But I am not allowed to go out .Well I will call Miss Annersely and tell her. Now would you like to have some tea and the wonderful cakes made by Anna?”
Miss Annersely on hearing Joey’s request heaved a sigh of relief. Now there was no need to confess about her modeling job last summer.
