Post subject:  Le Petit Chalet

This was inspired by a comment that I read somwhere a few weeks ago about how someone wished that they could have seen more of the juniors while thay were at Le Petit Chalet. I have hunted and hunted for it today and can't find it anywhere, so I'm sorry I can't credit you by name, whoever you are! But thanks for the inspiration anyway, it's a long time since I've had any.

“Maria, come and report to Madame before the others get back from their walk.” Gisela said, putting her head round the door of the junior form room. Her young sister was sitting at her desk, grinning over a letter that she had received just before leaving home. Maria scrambled to her feet, reflecting to herself that it really was most unfair that it should be her sister who was Head Girl. Left to her own devices, she would have finished reading the letter from Amy before reporting. Surely it wasn’t that urgent? “Madame is just back from the Post.” Gisela continued, as if reading her mind “And it is best to report as soon as possible.” Maria pulled her tunic straight, ran her hands over her neat dark hair, and followed her sister to the study.

Gisela knocked, and at the command both girls entered. Madge looked up and smiled.

“Ah, girls.” she said, “Marie mentioned you had come while I was out. Welcome back to school, and welcome to boarding!” she added, cheerfully. “Gisela, you are in the green dormitory at the top of the house with Gertrude, Bette, and Grizel. Maria dear, you are going to be with the other juniors in the new chalet we have bought for this term.” she waved her hand out of the window. “Le Petit Chalet will become the junior house.” she explained. “There will be nine of you there, and you will have your own Head of the Juniors. Mademoiselle will sleep there too, and so will our new mistress, Miss Durrant. I presume Gisela told you about our new junior, Robin Humphries?”

Ja, Madame.” Maria replied in her own language.

”She has gone for a walk with Joey, Juliet and Grizel just now, but perhaps after Mitagessen you can both go over to Le Petit Chalet and explore? Would you like that?” Maria nodded eagerly, her mind working quickly and realising the advantages there would be to staying in a different house from Gisela. And they were to have a Head Girl of their own! Maria was firmly convinced that any Head Girl who was to come from the Juniors would be far less strict about keeping the rules than Gisela would be. It seemed that boarding for the winter was going to be much more fun than she had thought when they had left Innsbruck that morning. She had got so far when she realised that Gisela had curtsied, and was turning to leave. Maria hastily followed her example, and then hurried to the splasheries where a babble of conversation announced that the other four girls had returned from their walk.

The Maranis were greeted with cries of delight when they appeared in the splashery.

“We didn’t expect you until tomorrow!” Grizel Cochrane exclaimed, not ceasing to brush her long curls. “That was what you said last week, Gisela.”

“Papa decided we should come early.” Gisela explained, heading for the basin. “Move over Joey, that I may wash too. Robin, this is my sister Maria, another junior.” Maria looked with interest at the tiny girl who was changing her shoes in the corner. Gisela had mentioned that Robin was only six, but she looked fun despite that, Maria decided, as they said hello. And it meant that Amy wouldn’t be the school baby any more. Maria smiled to herself as she thought how her friend would take that news. Maria herself had been school baby for less than a week, but even that had been sufficient to prove to her that it wasn’t an enviable position. The bell rang for Mitagessen just then, and smiling shyly at each other, the two juniors followed the other girls to the Spiesesaal.

Looks like a great start. I always thought the juniors were neglected in the earlier books and a drabble from Maria's perspective is intriguing too.

Thank you

Great, Eilidh. Many thanks. I always thought it was sad that the Juniors were hardly ever mentioned once the new chalet had been built for them.
