Post subject:  John Charles Maynard Update 6/1/08

“I can do anything you can John Charles Maynard,” came an angry voice.
“No, you can’t,” retorted Jack. Sisters were such pains in the neck.
“Yes I can,” insisted Mollie Maynard and leapt onto her brother. The two rolled over onto the ground.
“Kids who would have them,” said Bob Maynard rolling his eyes as he prised the six year old twin apart. Bob was twelve years older than his younger siblings and he had been thrilled when he had been told he had not just one but two more siblings, but lately he felt more like a referee than a brother.
“Now what seems to be the problem?” he asked
“Jack won’t let me play in the tree house,” said Mollie glowering at her brother.
“Girls don’t climb trees,” said Jack infuriatingly and Jack stuck out his tongue at his sister. Sisters were so annoying.
“Bob,” he appealed. “The tree house is our secret hideout.”
“It’s not if I know,” taunted Mollie.
“Mollie,” said Bob patiently. “I did build it with Jack and his friends. I can make you one too.”
Mollie’s bottom lip trembled, “but I want to play too,” she wailed. “None of my friends want to climb up there. They only want to play with dolls.”
“See,” Jack started to say until he saw Bob glaring at him and he fell silent. He stood there drawing circles with his foot in the dust.
“You can come too,” he said at last, “but not when my friends are here,” he added. “We’ve got club meetings.”

“Jack, Jack, are you listening to me?”
Jack started to see his older sister looking at him. Mollie had arrived for a visit. It was the second time she had returned to Switzerland since migrating to New Zealand. Sixty-five year old Jack smiled at his sister.
“I was just remembering arguing with you over the tree house.”
Mollie laughed. “Poor Bob. I don’t know how he coped with us. He was forever refereeing our arguments.”
The two fell silent. Jack was retiring at long last and he and Joey had decided to move to their holiday house in Tirol. It was where they had met and it was the happiest years of Joey’s life. Joey also knew if they didn’t move away from the San, Jack would never completely retire. She had decided to hold one last party to celebrate not only Jack’s retirement but also his sixtieth birthday. Somehow Joey had managed to convince Mollie Maynard to visit. Mollie refused to be away for her own birthday so the party was held during the Summer holidays when everyone could get back for it.
“How do you think you’ll survive without working?” asked Mollie looking at her brother closely.
“I don’t know,” shrugged Jack. “I miss it already. Do you want one last look at the San?” asked Jack looking at his sister hopefully. “I’d love to show you around one last time.”
Mollie laughed. “Do you think Joey will let us escape?”
“She’s in the Saal with Madge and the girls,” said Jack.
“Come on lets go,” said Mollie with conspiratorial wink.

Maybe they'll find it's a little like living near the beach - all your long lost friends and relatives come to visit for weeks at a time (and don't help with the housework or the grocery bill and expect you to drop everything to keep them company and...)

Thanks Fiona I look forward to more

“Come on Mollie,” said Jack impatiently. “You said you wanted to come.”

Eight year old Mollie didn’t like the dancing shadows. “It’s too dark,” she said with a shiver of fear.

“Come on don’t be such a fraidy cat,” said Jack pulling his sisters arm.

The two crept down through the kitchen and outside to their tree house. The two had decided to have a midnight feast and Jack had stowed provisions in a hidy hole. Jack didn’t like the darkness out in the garden and so didn’t protest when his sister clutched his hand and stuck to him like glue.

“Mollie,” said Jack almost tripping over. “I can’t walk if you’re that close.”

“I don’t like this,” said Mollie sniffing a little.

“What are you two doing out here,” said a voice.

Mollie and Jack shrieked with the unexpectedness of it and scampered back to the house, with the pursuer in chase. Mollie was crying in good earnest now and Jack wasn’t too far behind her.

“Hey,” said the voice, “it’s only me.” Mollie and Jack stopped at that and saw that it was only Bob.

“Why are you scaring us like that,” said Mollie with a gulp.

“I’m sorry,” said Bob sincerely handing her his hanky. “Mop up and tell me why the two of you are out here at one o’clock in the morning.”

“We wanted to have a midnight feast,” mumbled Jack looking at the ground. “Peter said his brother had one at school and it sounded like fun so Mollie said she’d do it with me.”

Bob hid a smile. “Why don’t I join you,” he invited, “and we’ll have it in the kitchen.”

Bob soon had the twins settled and the three of them were munching on some chocolate biscuits he had managed to unearth.

“What are you doing here anyway Bob?” asked Jack.

“I had a free weekend and I thought I would surprise Mum and Dad, answered Bob. Bob was an Officer in the army. “My car broke down and I had to walk the rest of the way. Now you two better hop off to bed. And by the way don’t tell Mum and Dad I’m here.” Bob added the last bit knowing that if Jack and Mollie told their parents that he had arrived their parents would know the twins had been up in the middle of the night.

“What are you thinking of?” smiled Mollie as she and Jack walked to the car.

“Our midnight feast,” said Jack looking deep in thought.

Mollie started to laugh. “My kids tried that only they were a little more successful than we were. Dollie told me last year. Seems like all my stories of my childhood came back to haunt me.”

Jack smiled. “Phil’s the only one I ever told,” he said slightly sadly. “Mainly they hear their Mother’s stories and she’s the better story teller.”

“How did Phil get told then?” asked Mollie curiously.

“It was all I could think of to distract her with when she was in hospital with polio and mastoid, said Jack unseeingly. “All about a naughty pair of twins called Mollie and Jack, just like her and Geoff. I think she ended up telling Geoff some of them and the two tried to re-enact them; at least the cubby house part anyway.”

Mollie gave a giggle. “I wonder if that’s still there.”

“It was a few years back,” said Jack. “Phil wanted to see it and so I took her and Marie-Clare with me when I collected the boys from school and we stopped off there and the cubby was still standing, in pieces anyway. I spent most of my time there rebuilding it.”

“Did you catch up with Lydia while you were there?” asked Mollie, the light going from her face.

Jack nodded. “We stayed with her. She was lovely with them.”

Mollie sighed, “I really wished she and Bob could have had more children or she was able to cope being around others who could.”

Jack gave Mollie a sideways look as Mollie continued, “I can understand though to an extent.” She sighed and changed the subject.

Jack gave Mollie a sideways look as Mollie continued, “I can understand though to an extent.” She sighed and changed the subject.

“How is Joey going to cope with being so far away from the school?” She asked.

“She’ll find it hard,” Jack admitted, “but the idea of living in Tyrol again appeals to her. And it’s different now, all her old friends have retired or left and they have someone entirely different in charge.”

“Who?” asked Mollie with interest, “and what is she like?”

Jack gave a grin as the discussion about their sister in law was shelved for the moment. “You know her Mother,” he said, “you even taught her back in your youth.”

“Who?” asked Mollie impatiently, “and stop being deliberately aggravating.”

Jack smiled, “Josefa und un von Weitherm, Marie Von Eschenau’s daughter.”

Mollie’s jaw dropped. “I don’t believe it,” she said flatly.

Jack nodded. “She taught at a school in Geneva for awhile and then came here. She had a lot of innovative ideas and she did have the link with the Chalet School in Carnbach. She was its Head Girl.
Hilda and Madge both really liked what she came up with and Hilda especially wanted someone younger. Nancy flatly refused and there wasn’t really anyone else that really stood out.”

“That change wouldn’t have been easy,” said Mollie with a sigh. “Hilda was a foundation stone.”

“It went pretty well, said Jack reflectively, “I know the girls have liked the changes Josefa made and a lot were around when the school was in England and Tyrol. The Sixth form was allowed to go to Interlaken on the weekends and the fifths could go to the village. They could only go to Interlaken if they went with a Sixth former. Guides and lot of other activities were started up again. They interact more with other schools and the Senior school have a dance or a debate or just a general get together with an all boys school down in Interlaken.”

“I’m surprised they didn’t decide to go co-ed,” commented Mollie.

Jack shook his head. “Not many boarding schools are,” explained Jack. “Oh I know you get a few, but most were more comfortable having a brother school and Josefa knew one of the teachers at St Ignacous in Interlaken so approached them and its worked so far anyway. The girls learn how to interact with the boys and vice a versa.”

Mollie smiled. “It sounds like Josefa’s made some fairly major changes.”

“That’s not the only thing,” added Jack, “The school’s become more international and the girls can take the examinations from all the countries. So if you were going to an English University then you would do your A levels, or if you were going to Sarbonne then you would do the French Bachot, or whatever it is.”

“Hmm,” said Mollie interestedly, “that’s bound to attract more people.”

“It has,” agreed Jack, “and the girls seem to be doing well with it and fortunately it wasn’t too complicated to set up. None of these changes have caused too many problems after everyone got used to the ideas of them.”

“What about Madge?” Asked Mollie, “how does she feel about it all?”

“Madge has handed over her share of the school to Ailie and Ailie is the Games Mistress there,” answered Jack.

“Ailie!” exclaimed Mollie surprised, “what about the other two, Josette and Sybil?”

“They live in Australia and Madge did discuss it with all of them when the other two returned to England for Josette’s wedding. The four made the decision. I’m not sure of all the ins and outs but they all were happy with the final results,” explained Jack.

“Well, that’s the main thing,” commented Mollie. “They’re the ones involved.”

Jack swung into the San’s driveway. “Here we are,” he said

My apologies for taking so long to update but I've just worked the last 8 days straight and now finally have a few days off to do this. Thanks for all the comments :D

“Now, what are all your family up to these days? asked Mollie. “I feel like I’ve barely had a chance to catch up with them all. I still feel a bit jet lagged.”

The pair were in the Hospital’s cafeteria. Jack had collected them both a steaming cup of coffee. Mollie took a sip.

“I fell in love with this coffee when I was at the school,” she said with a sigh.

“So did I,” smiled Jack. “Thanks Mollie, I really needed one last look around.”

“That’s okay, but your not answering my question Jack,” said Mollie a trifle impatiently, “especially as I, the nice kind loving sister have listened to you drone on and on about the San for the last, what two hours.”

“Two hours,” yelped Jack, “Joey will be frantic.”

“Relax,” said Mollie, “I called your place when you got chatting with all the new young doctors and told Chas that we were here.”

“That’s good,” said Jack calming down, “I didn’t think we’d be that long. Now okay,” started Jack relenting, “we’ll start with Len. She went off to Oxford and studied modern languages with the aim to teach.”

“I remember Joey mentioned that,” commented Mollie, “and that she was engaged to Reg. I thought it was a bit young myself but,” and Mollie shrugged.

“Yes and no,” said Jack. “She did really well and started to spread her wings a little. She and Reg discussed things and Reg resigned from the San and moved to Oxford. He got a job in the Hospital there. It was great for them as they got to see each other a lot more. Len got a job every summer translating in hospitals in London. David Russell organised it for her. He said most hospitals were screaming out for people to translate and she does speak French and German like a native and her Italian, Spanish and Russian aren’t too bad which is good. She met a lot of immigrants from Pakistan, India and Eastern Europe whom she couldn’t translate for and neither could many others so she decided to set up English classes for them all. Bride Bettany’s friend Tom Gay helped her organise it. She still does it now. She and Reg moved to London after they got married when her course finished.”

“No kids?” asked Mollie with a raised eyebrow.

“Three little ones, they’re four, three and one and she said that’s plenty for her,” explained Jack. “She has a part time nanny so she can teach English as a foreign language.”

“That’s amazing,” said Mollie slightly awed.

“Con writes,” continued Jack. “She tutors English Literature at Oxford. She finally told us she is M. C. Maynard who writes for The Time magazine. She finally came last year and admitted to everyone. She started while she was in college. Bride’s husband Simon got her into it somehow and she wrote under her initials. Her articles are amazing. She travels everywhere and writes about political situations. I don’t think her editors expected that M C Maynard was actually a woman, but they did keep her on afterwards and want a lot more work from her. As her editor said she is one of the most astute, insightful writers he has ever come across.”

“Good on her,” said Mollie pleased.

“Good on her,” said Mollie pleased. “No reporting?”

Jack shook his head. “Only a little; she tends to write more editorial pieces and puts her own spin on things, which is why she writes for the magazine more than the paper. She’s just finished a huge series about Margot and the work she does.”

“I thought Margot was becoming a Nun,” said Mollie confused.

“She is,” replied Jack, “but she volunteers at a homeless refuge in her spare time until she takes her vows. She was planning on doing that last summer but Joey asked her if she would hold off until after my sixtieth and the family gathering. She managed to complete her diploma in tropical medicine on top of her medical degree and works at a hospital in Edinburgh.

“How did she get involved in the Homeless centre?” asked Mollie curiously

“She helped out at a Catholic orphanage one summer,” said Jack slightly sadly, “and it nearly changed her mind about being a nun. She came here for two weeks at the end of the summer and didn’t want anything to do with God or the church. She went to Mass to please us but that was it. I don’t know what happened and she refused to ever discuss it. She nearly threw in being a doctor, but decided to finish the course. She ended up volunteering at a homeless centre in Edinburgh. She works for a charity organisation and works with a lot of teenagers and drugs.”

Mollie raised an eyebrow, “what made her decide that?” she asked.

“I don’t know,” said Jack staring into space as though looking back in time. “She won’t discuss it, but she is happy and she has a definite soft side to her now. Just takes things on board and is a real tower of strength for anyone who needs it and its tough for her being a doctor and then working there on top. I went there after dropping the boys off to school and saw the kind work she does. It’s amazing. She doesn’t take much rubbish of these kids and she’ll fight for them. One of them Sue I think her name is said Margot saved her life, knew her from the orphanage. Said Margot was the first person who had ever made her feel like she was worth something.”

Mollie shook her head, “that’s amazing,” she said with awe. “How does she feel about God now?”

“Better,” said Jack quietly, “much better. It nearly broke mine and Joey’s heart to see her go from wanting to dedicate her life to God to nothing and then refuse to talk about why. Grace Nalder is her Godmother and she was a real tower of strength for her during those two weeks she was home.”

“That’s one of the hardest things to do,” said Mollie quietly, “letting someone else help and knowing you’re not the one to be able to.”

“I know,” said Jack with a sigh. “Anyway,” he said, “she’s really happy now, and she’s made her peace with God and she’s looking forward to becoming a Nun at long last. Plans on taking her vows after all this is over.”

“Good for her. Is Con married?” asked Mollie.

Jack shook his head. “Has no desire to. Said all families should have a nice spinster auntie and she planned to be it.”

“Now, that sounds like her mother did,” remarked Mollie.

“It does,” replied Jack lightly, “and Joey thought it was just talk until the right man came along but so far no one has; at least not enough to change her mind anyway.”

“What about the boys?” queried Mollie.

“Steve is an engineer and is currently working in Africa; Rhodesia I think; loves the work. He’s married to a Sth African girl he met when he was visiting a friend in Cape Town. They’re doing well. Chas works with Margot with the homeless. He helped her out one summer a few years back when Margot first started and decided that was for him. He was studying teaching and I must admit part of me thought he would become a Priest or something but he didn’t want to stay single,” answered Jack.

“Did he have anyone in mind?” asked Mollie with a raised eyebrow.

“Gretchen Von Ahlen,” said Jack with a grin. “It seems like he has always like her and told her years ago when we first moved to the Platz that he was going to marry her when he grew up. Gretchen said she was relieved to have it all sorted out, not that either of them told anyone then. Joey and Frieda were ecstatic and the pair do seem extremely well suited and happy. They got married a year ago, just after Steve and Laura did and Gretchen helps out with whatever needs doing. Margot says she’s an angel with all the girls and they all adore her.”
“Mike is following in Margot’s footsteps and is studying for his medical degree.”

“No Navy then?” asked Mollie curiously.

“Oh yes,” said Jack. “That never changed but they’re sponsoring him through his degree and in return he works for them once he’s finished his degree. They pay for everything which is handy.”
“Felicity is a dancer. She joined the Royal Ballet Company. She’s good but will never be a Prima Ballerina.”

“How does she know that?” exclaimed Mollie. “She shouldn’t give up yet.”

Jack shook his head. “All her teachers and she realizes herself that she’s good but not brilliant. I wouldn’t worry, she pretty happy making it as far as she has. She went to Sadler Well Dance School and lived with Len and Reg during term time.”

“That was nice of Len!” exclaimed Mollie. “It’s hard being newly married and have your twelve year old sister living in.”

“Len offered,” said Jack quietly. “Joey wasn’t too sure because she does like having her daughters close and as you said it is hard having others live with you. I know both Joey and I did and Madge and Jem did but it is an added pressure. And it does mean Felicity has to listen to her sister not her parents and how many kids can do that.”

“It worked out all right then?” Asked Mollie concerned.

“Oh I think they had their ups and downs not that they ever said anything outright but,” Jack paused and shrugged.

“Oh well it’s between them,” soothed Mollie. “Anyway, we should head back or Joey would be sending out the guards to find us.”

Jack started laughing, “Come on then,” he said good humouredly.

“Joey was telling me that Cecil was thinking of becoming a professional singer,” commented Mollie as the two headed back to the car.

Jack nodded, “She has her Mother’s talent and the drive to do well. Geoff and Phil are both still in school as well. Phil has decided to study medicine as well. She wants to become a children’s doctor. I think after everything she went through as a kid pushed her into wanting to care for sick children and Geoff finds the idea of joining the army seems appealing to him at times.”
Marie Claire isn’t sure what she wants to do yet, though she does like writing stories, especially about Mr McDonald and his airplane,” said Jack with a grin. It’s become something of the family joke.”
“Felix is into finance and business and is studying at Oxford. He is talking about working for Bruno Von Ahlen in Basle when he has finished. It seems to suit him.”

“That’s good,” said Mollie almost absently. “Jack, how is Phil after her polio and mastoid.”

“Good,” returned Jack, “Limps a little but otherwise she pretty much made a full recovery.”

“Good,” said Mollie with relief. “I felt so bad for you all. Poor Phil, to go through both one after the other like that must have been so hard for the poor mite.”

“It was hard,” agreed Jack. “It’s funny though, I wouldn’t wish it on any of my kids but I did get to spend so much time with her because of it and I am glad for that.”

“It probably the only good thing you could say about all of it,” pointed out Mollie.

The two chatted about other things as walked back to the car. Once he reached the car, Jack turned and took one last look at the San. ‘Good bye, old girl,’ he said silently. ‘It’s been great knowing you.’

In the past
“And Mollie this is it. That’s the whole San. Dr Russell says he plans to start off small but will expand and there’s an Austrian doctor called Gottfried Mensch. He’s seems like a good chap. What do you think? Moll?” asked Jack slightly anxiously. Jack looked at his sister.

Mollie sighed she remember how excited when Jack was doing his training and had his heart set on becoming a surgeon. Jack had showed her around St Thomas’s Hospital in London just before he started his training and told her about all his plans to become the most brilliant doctor and somehow his dreams had been reduced to this. She gave her brother a long look. How she loved him and was so extraordinarily proud of him.

“I think it sounds great Jack. Just think you’ll have been here from the very beginnings. One of the founding members,” she said determinedly, refusing to cry or say anything that would shatter the boyish determination not to let anything get him down.

“Yeah,” said Jack, relaxing a little and he said with a straight face, “the added bonus I forgot to mention was with you close by all my washing will get done and meals cooked. Mother was so relieved about that.”

“What?” shrieked Mollie. “I don’t think so,” and swatted her brother playfully before giving him a hug. “Jack,” she said softly, “I’m so proud of you.”

“Come on,” said Jack looking embarrassed

In the present
“Come on Mollie,” Jack said with a smile, “now who’s the one daydreaming? It’s time we got back to celebrate.”

“Okay,” said Mollie with a theatrical sigh. “I can’t keep the Head of the San waiting.”
“Jack?” asked Mollie pausing with a sudden thought, “who’s taking over from you?”

“Oh Eugen Curvoisier is. The Graves are retiring and returning to England too, Neil Sheppard and Grizel returned to the England a few years ago as Grizel refused point blank to be parted from her sons when they reached school age. Phoebe and Frank Peters left for the same reason especially when Lucy went to Saddler Wells with Felicity and their son was about to start Prep School the same year.
Eugen’s Swiss and so all his family are here and his children will all go to school here, the girls at the Chalet School and the boys at St Ignacious in Interlaken. He had also been a part of it from the early days. Although part of it will remain for TB the rest will be turned into other specialities, Casualty, Orthopaedics, and General Medical and Surgical.”
Jack shrugged.
“A lot has changed now there is a vaccine for TB and the need for a San is decreasing. Everyone is happy Eugen is the Head. Biddy’s thrilled, she adores Eugen’s family and would hate move too far away from them all. David Russell works there in Orthopaedics but has no desire to be the Head and as he says he’s no where near experienced enough. I think he’s more a hands on kind of doctor and being Head of a Hospital tends to take you away from that.”
“David joined the San?” asked Mollie curiously. “He didn’t want to work with his Dad in Wales.”

Jack shook his head. “That wasn’t the reason,” he said grinning broadly. “David married Kathie Ferrars one of the Mistresses at the Chalet School and she still wanted to work part time at least so David joined the San and Kathie is able to remain at the school and near all her friends.”
Jack chortled, “all the girls have found it hard having their old mistress as there cousin but Kathie handled it really well and the girls all thought that if David married one of their mistresses she was the best one.”
Mollie laughed. “I can imagine that,” she said in heartfelt tones. “Joey had that a little bit by marrying you. Anyway, we really should be getting back."[/i]

Well that's different! Can't be sure but doesn't that make Kathie a cradle snatcher - I'm sure she'll be older than David - certainly not ten years younger as EBD liked to see!

Nice to see Eugen as Head with Biddy taking on Joey's role - of course she would be happy staying there - it's the only family she has. (At least until Frogsize's stories!)

Thanks Fiona.

Kathie was presumably the same age as Peggy Bettany because she was at uni with Nell Randolph, so she'd have been about 3 years older than David - not much of a difference, although EBD does seem to think that all women prefer much older men and all men prefer much younger women  !

Nice to see various people returning home when their sons were of school age - I always felt so sorry for the Maynard boys, being sent away when their sisters were at school next door to the family home.

Had to laugh at Mollie thinking Jack had *been reduced to this*. Still, if he had been going to be a surgeon, can see why!

So glad Biddy is happy and fulfilled up there on the Platz.

Thanks, Fiona.
