Post subject:  Joy's invitation - short and complete

This is a short story about Joy Bird when she first arrives at the Chalet School. I hope I've not got her charachter too wrong as it's been a while since I've read Lavender! :reading:

‘Joy! I say, Joy Bird, I have an invitation for you,’ called Peggy Bettany as she spotted Joy in the cormer of the junior common room.
Joy looked up. ‘An invitation?’ she asked somewhat confused.
‘Yes, to my Aunt Joey’s home Plas Gwyn. It’s on Saturday,’ replied a cheerful Peggy who squatted down next to Joy.
Joy stared blankly. ‘Why would I have an invitation to your Aunt Joey’s?’
‘Because, that’s what she does with all new girls. She used to go to the Chalet School in the dark ages and even though she’s married and has triplets – they’re my cousins, it’s like twins but there are three of them! – she’s still part of the school,’ Peggy explained carefully.
Joy nodded slowly. ‘But if she’s part of the school why haven’t I seen her before?’
Peggy giggled. ‘Oh, but you have seen her before, well nearly. She’s over there on the bookshelf,’ and she pointed to the opposite wall where a large selection of books rested on the shelves.
‘You must be barmy,’ replied Joy shaking her head and returning to her letters.
Many people may have viewed this abrupt response from Joy as rude, but Peggy was a friendly soul and instead went over to the bookshelf and after a few minutes picked out a gaily jacketed text.
‘Here,’ she said sitting back down next to Joy. ‘This is my Aunt Joey’s first book, it’s called Nancy Meets A Nazi. It’s based upon her and Uncle Jack’s, Bill’s and some other’s escape from Austria and the Anschluss.’
Joy glanced at the book without looking up from her papers. It did look interesting.
‘Josephine M Bettany is my Aunt Joey, only now she is Mrs Maynard.’
‘Oh,’ came the brief response from Joy.
Peggy opened the book. ‘Here’s my favourite part, it’s about the midnight escape through the Alps. It is interesting Joy, do take a look,’ she said holding the open pages out to Joy.
‘No thank you, I have to finish reading my letters,’ with which Joy turned herself away from Peggy.
Finally having enough of her classmate’s unfriendly behaviour Peggy stood up and dusted down her skirt.
‘Well Joy, I only came to tell you that my Aunt Joey, that’s Josephine M Bettany, has invited you to her home on Saturday and that you should bring along a friend. I know you’ll have fun there, I always do,’ with which she headed over to the bookcase, placed back the aforementioned item, and left the room.

I haven't read Lavender so I can't comment on the accuracy... but she was VERY rude!
Thank-you :D

Thank-you Laura. I haven't read Lavender for a while either but that's just how I'd imagine Joy. I liked Peggy's explaination of what triplets are. And Jo on the bookshelf

Wasn't Jo's first book Cecily Holds the Fort?

Can you do a sequel of her actual visit to Joey's? I can imagine it would be fun to see how Joey responds to a CS girl who doesn't like her.

Much much later on Yseult apparently did not succumb to Joey's charm either which is one of the reasons her form has a black mark against her. After all, she's in the same form as three of Joey's daughters and a god daughter (Jo Scott).

Cheers,
Joyce
