Why were they all fine?

Why was it always her that seemed to suffer? Well that wasn't true. Whilst it seemed to be public knowledge that she had broken down and was having recurrent nightmares, she wasn't going to betray the others.

She wouldn't make them feel like she always did. Not on top of everything else they were all suffering.

She hated the way people scrutinised her- she had too much colour or too little. She was hysterical or worryingly silent.

Why couldn't they leave her alone? Look at Robin. Night after night Jo had gone to her in the middle of the night, finding her sweating and white. She would wake up her eyes haunted.

Or Jack, who went completely silent for so long sometimes, but she could see it in his eyes. The pain, and worse, the blame. He would go stonily silent, and when she managed to coaxe him to talk it was always blaming himself. He was always finding ways he could have prevented it from happening, ways he could have protected her better, ways he could have made the escape easier, or unnecessary.

But she never told anyone about these outbursts.

Or what about the fact that when Frieda was living with her everytime she looked at her children she would start crying. Every single time she held her baby for the first two months, when she thought no one was looking. She used to say that he reminded her of Bruno.

And Madge, who looked after her children and wards to the point of exhausting herself, as she tried to make up for the abscence of their parents.

The list went on and on, all these people she had comforted, talked to, and left to grieve in comfort and peace. Why couldn't they let her do it to?

Highly-strung they would say before running their eyes over her face carefully.

After a while she just started to shut out emotion, and shut out the real world. She immersed herself in the children's world of the Chalet School. Here surely people would not be crowing over her.

But soon the highly-strung girl just became the submissive girl. It felt like in a way to combat his own guilt, Jack had built a gilded cage for his wife.

He watched over her obsessively, and soon her strong will left her...

Yes, Jack did have some culpability there, didn't he?

Thanks Brie

But understandably so, especially after going through all they did. I can understand why they they became the way they did
