Post subject:  Claire and her Christmas Adventure Completed 18/12/08

I couldn't be a Secret Santa this year, with being away so much in Wales at the moment, but I wrote this Christmas story for a little girl of my acquaintance so thought you might like to read it as well.

It was a freezing cold Christmas Eve and snow lay deep and crisp and even all round the walls of Freudesheim. Claire Maynard, who once upon a time had been little Marie-Claire de Mabillon, had been helping Mamma finish cleaning and decorating the house so everything was sparkling to welcome the Christ-child. Papa had taken all her brothers and sisters to join in the carol-singing at the San but she was as yet a little too young, and had been only too pleased to stay at home and have Mamma all to herself. Finally, everything was done. Joey Maynard smiled down at her youngest daughter.

“Shall we go and make sure the tree hasn’t flown away?” she asked.

Claire pressed her hands together excitedly as she thought about the starry lights and the shining decorations she had seen for the first time that morning, when they had come down the stairs. Erica had told her to peep into the lounge – and there it was! It had appeared as if by magic while she had been sleeping. Just as Father Christmas would come tonight, if she went to sleep immediately and promised not to peep.

“Well, do you think you could carry the little nativity scene in for me?”

Claire nodded and took the tray from Joey carefully, her little face serious. Walking slowly, so as not to drop anything, she went into the lounge. She set down her tray on the coffee table and then turned to look once more at the tree filling the large French window. She watched, waiting for the magic to happen. And it did! One moment the tree was just a tree. Then, in the blink of an eye, it was a shimmering thing of beauty. Light glanced off the baubles, danced through the branches, and cast colourful patterns on the snow lying outside in the dark.

Claire could only stare, mesmerised. A star was shining at the top, golden and serene, and she could imagine fairies and pixies hiding in the branches and peeping slyly out at her. Joey smiled understandingly at the entranced face and glowing brown eyes. She turned to set out the nativity figures on the little table, knowing full well that Claire would want to re-arrange them heself later. Running a loving hand over her daughter’s soft, black hair, she left the room.

Claire moved nearer to the tree, touched a coloured ball here, a velvet ribbon there. It was too big and too wonderful to take in all at once, but it was all hers for the moment, and it would stay there for days and days. What was more, Con had said that tomorrow morning there would be parcels lying underneath, left there by Father Christmas when he came down the chimney. There would also be a bulging stocking left hanging at the end of her bed.

All of a sudden, she felt a yearning to be part of the magic. Dropping to her knees, she crawled carefully under the branches, the fir needles snagging at her clothes. Finally, she reached the heart of the tree, the lowest branches falling down around her, enclosing her. It was like being in a dark and mysterious cave. Feeling all warm and cosy, she lay on her back and stared up through the starry branches, the soft light filtering down to touch her face. She set one bauble spinning, and then another. The light bounced off them and flashed into her eyes until she grew dizzy.

She was so dizzy that she found the tree was spinning round and round above her. She closed her eyes but that didn’t help. As she opened them again she seemed to be drawn up through the branches of the spinning tree, but so slowly, so gently, that the needles didn’t scratch and the lights didn’t blind. She drifted higher and higher and the baubles began to loom like huge balloons; the branches stretched away into infinity. Either they were growing bigger or she was shrinking….

The next moment she found herself sitting way up high on the topmost branch, right next to the bright star. She clapped her hands in delight. Just wait till she told Mamma what had happened! Even as she thought this, the star beside her began to twinkle, golden beams shooting out in all directions. Right in its heart, there shone a most radiant being. For a long moment they stared at each other through the beams of light. Then this radiant being stepped out of the star and settled on the branch beside her. It turned and smiled at her with mischief in its eyes.

“Do you know what I am?” it asked, its voice silvery and clear.

Claire stuck her thumb in her mouth, considered her companion silently. The latter was about the same height as herself and looked like a girl, with longish, shining fair hair and rosy, dimpled cheeks. Strangely, however, this radiant being was wearing what appeared to be a nightdress - and wings, golden, glistening wings, curved up from its back.

“You’re a fairy,” said Claire matter-of-factly.

The creature’s laughter was as silvery as its voice. “Oh, no, I’m something far more real than a fairy, Claire. I’m a cherub.”

“What’s a cherub?”

“I’m an angel sent from God - only a very small angel, and not a very wise one, but an angel, all the same.” A hand was held out to Claire. “Will you come out with me tonight? I’ve been charged with things to do down here, and I thought you might like to help me. After all, it’s the most special night of the year, on earth as well as in Heaven, so why shouldn’t a human child be involved?”

Claire’s eyes shone with excitement and she put her eager little hand in the cherub’s. “Oh, but wait! I can’t go with you if I don’t know your name.”

The cherub pursed his lips. “How about just ‘Cherub’? Wouldn’t that do?”

Claire nodded. The next instant she found herself outside, floating high above the ground. Feathery snowflakes were dancing lazily all around them as they flew side by side, holding each other by one outstretched hand.....

To be continued.

I'm sorry to keep you waiting for the next part of Claire's adventure, but thank you so much for the appreciative comments.

.....The next instant she found herself outside, floating high above the ground. Feathery snowflakes were dancing lazily all around them as they flew side by side, holding each other by one outstretched hand. Despite the snow, Claire felt warm. She also felt utterly safe, which was strange, as she had never flown through the air like this before. At first, as she watched below, there were snow-covered roofs gleaming up at them in ghostly fashion, but these gradually petered out and they came to a forest, a large, dark forest.

“Where are we going?” she asked breathlessly. “Oh, but this is such fun I don’t want it ever to end!”

“Not far now. Watch out for a clearing, a little gap in the trees.”

Even as Cherub spoke, Claire pointed excitedly. Cherub tightened his grip on her chubby hand and guided her down, down, until they were standing, bare-footed, in the drifting snow, gazing up into the branches of a tall, proud fir tree. Two robins were standing motionless on a thick branch, peering at them out of their beady, black eyes. Cherub held out a hand and immediately the birds flew down and perched on the outstretched arm. To Claire’s surprise, Cherub whistled a gay little tune, the silvery notes seeming to cast a magic spell on the snowy silence that lay on the forest. One robin whistled sweetly in reply, its head cocked to one side. Then, without warning, they both flew off into the trees.

“Were you talking to them?” whispered Claire.

Cherub nodded. “I was asking them to do something for me. You’ll see what in a little while….”

Before Claire could ply Cherub with more questions, she realised something rather strange was occurring. Some of the swirling snowflakes dancing in the air were growing larger, were darting towards them, were taking shape, were….

“More cherubs! Just like you!” she cried in ecstasy. Some of them seemed to be carrying coloured balls. Were they all going to play games in the snow?

“Want to help?” asked Cherub. He took one of the balls and held it out. Claire saw it wasn’t a ball at all, but a golden Christmas bauble, with engaging cherub faces painted all round its gleaming surface. Surely they weren’t going to decorate this huge tree, out here in the snow!

Round-eyed with rapture, Claire took the bauble and hung it on one of the lower branches. She turned to take another – and blinked. There was a blur in the air and a bauble suddenly appeared, hanging from a higher branch. She blinked again, and the blur returned to earth and became a cherub. Another blur – another branch was decorated. More blurs disturbed the air. More baubles were hanging where no baubles had been. Finger in her mouth, she looked around and saw Cherub smiling at her.

He gave her a broad wink and handed her another bauble, nodding towards the tree. Claire gave an experimental hop. Nothing happened! She tried again, a bigger hop. The next moment she was high in the air, hanging a burnished red bauble right near the top of the tree! She blinked, and found herself earth-bound again.

She stared at Cherub in the utmost astonishment. “How did I do that? I haven’t got any wings!” She twisted and turned, trying to peer over her shoulder just to make sure, and Cherub laughed.

“No explanations tonight. It’s Christmas Eve, when strange things happen and miracles abound.” Cherub held out a delicate, silver star. “You can have the honour of hanging this at the very top, if you like. Fly, little Claire.”

In a flash, the star was in place, and the clearing was bathed in its soft, ethereal light. Claire, back on the ground, saw that teeny, tiny stars were now glistening everywhere among the branches of the tree, their light glancing off the shiny surfaces of the baubles. It was perfect! As pretty as the one at home…

She glanced around to share her pleasure with the little cherubs – and gaped open-mouthed. They had disappeared! The clearing was empty, except for herself and Cherub.

Even as she looked, she became aware of rustling and flapping sounds. The cherubs had gone - so what were the noises? Her own Cherub moved closer and took her arm, drawing her away from the decorated tree and over to a snow-covered one nearby. He put his finger to his lips, indicating silence. They watched and waited - and gradually Claire realised that they were no longer alone.

Animals were creeping into the clearing in ones and twos – little rabbits and squirrels and mice, even a fawn. Their eyes were gleaming in the light from the stars in the tree. They stepped closer shyly and gathered around the tree, staring in wonder. Claire herself was staring in wonder, as she watched the fawn tuck its long legs under itself and curl up comfortably in the snow beside the tree and a squirrel wrap its furry tail round a tiny mouse to keep it warm and safe. All were silent and still, their little faces seeming to draw all the light to them.

Claire hugged herself with glee. Robins were now flying round the tree, some even sitting on presents that seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, and she realised that Cherub must have sent the two robins to collect these woodland folk. She wanted to stay forever and enjoy this beautiful scene, wanted to hug the animals, play with them, but it was not to be....

Oh, that really *is* beautiful. Claire's experience and her unquestioning acceptance of it has a magical quality which is unique to young children, and the gathering of the animals is the icing on the cake for us and for her.

Thank you, Mary, for allowing us to be spectators at this unforgettable, yet at the same time, so ethereal and fleeting spectacle. I will be looking forward to the next bit. :) :)

....She wanted to stay forever and enjoy this beautiful scene, wanted to hug the animals, play with them, but it was not to be. Cherub was tugging her arm, drawing her away.

“What’s in those pretty boxes?” asked Claire as they tip-toed away.

“Food, to help them through the cold wintry weather,” answered Cherub. “But come – I have other things to show you.”

Claire stumbled along reluctantly beside him, head turned so she could keep watching the animals, but soon the forest closed around them and the light from the star was gone. Disappointed, she trudged along with Cherub. She was sure she would never see anything quite so enchanting ever again.

“Cheer up, Claire,” Cherub smiled. “I have another very special something to show you.”

She gave a hop, skip and a jump. “As nice as those furry animals, as pretty as that tree?” she begged.

He simply smiled and took her hand. In no time at all it seemed to her that they had reached the edge of the forest. It was snowing very heavily now, great billowing clouds of it sweeping across the fields. Cherub tightened his grip on her hand and began to run, pulling her along with him. One moment she was running on the ground, the next her feet were pedalling in thin air. They were soaring upwards, up, up and up…

They finally burst out above the snow and flew up into the deep navy bowl of the heavens, where the stars glittered and twinkled so brightly that they almost blinded her. Small, fluffy clouds floated here and there, and Cherub led her to one. They settled themselves down on the cushioned softness and gazed out across the vast canopy of space. The stars were like little lamps hung to light up the dark, thought Claire. What a good idea of God’s!

“See, Claire,” whispered Cherub, his voice filled with reverence, and he pointed high above them.

Claire’s eyes followed his outstretched arm and saw a star – but not just any star. This one was immense, glorious, its great golden rays shining steadily in all directions, but the light from the rays was gentle and kind, and lay on their eyes like a benediction.

“What is it?” Claire whispered. “Why is it so big? Why doesn’t it frighten me?”

Cherub’s eyes were solemn as he turned and looked at her. “It’s the Christmas Star, Claire, the star that will lead the three wise men to find a new King, the star that will shine down on the stable at Bethlehem. The Light of the World will soon be born and the angels are already singing their songs of joy to the shepherds.”

His voice was wistful as he spoke, his eyes filled with longing, but Claire had no idea why. She frowned at his words. “Baby Jesus was born a long time ago, Cherub. Mamma told me. It’s not happening now, so why is the star shining?”

“How do you know it’s not happening now, little Claire?” Cherub asked softly. “He is born every year into hearts that love Him, into hearts that travel far in their search for Him. And the angels sing their songs of joy without ceasing, every moment of every day throughout the year – but you’re all too busy and too noisy to hear their message of peace and love.”

To Claire, this was grown-up wisdom she didn’t really understand, but she did understand his sadness. “You want to sing with them, don’t you?”

“One day, perhaps,” he sighed, but then turned and winked at her. “Tell me, Claire, how do you know I haven’t brought you back to the very time Jesus was born? How do you know the stable isn’t down there just below us?”

Startled, she stared at him. “It isn’t, is it? We aren’t really back then, are we?”

His answering smile was pure mischief. “That’s my secret, Claire, dear. Are you pleased I brought you to see this beautiful star? Does it make up for having to leave the animals?”

Claire turned her eyes once more on the golden star, her eyes lit up by its glow. “Oh, yes! Somehow, I don't know why, it makes me feel like dancing and singing for joy.”

“So it should, child,” answered Cherub with tenderness, then cocked his head to one side as though hearing something beyond the ken of human ears. He held out his hand to her. “Come! The star is on its way once more, and I think I hear something else that is very special, so let’s go and see!”

He was right. The star was already smaller, but Claire was not sad this time for she still felt the joy in her heart. She placed her hand in Cherub’s. They left their billowy cushion and flew through the night once more. The snow had ceased now, the clouds had rolled away and the pure light of the moon was beaming down over the countryside below, throwing everything into sharp relief......

Surely that is the key message of Christmas, isn't it? One which can never be forgotten.

And here we are experiencing all this through the eyes of a child, who is still young enough and innocent enough to accept everything which is shown to her, and at the same time, perceptive enough to ask pretty searching questions - as we all do.

Mary, as always, your vivid word pictures leave me so thankful that I am able to 'witness' Claire's journey through them - I could almost be 'shadowing' her and her cherub, so close to the action do I feel. And I second Lottie's suggestion, too!

Thank you again - I will be looking forward to Claire's next adventure. :) :)

Thank you so much, Lottie and others, for being so complimentary about this drabble, but I really don't think my writing has that special feel to be worthy of being published. Not that it wouldn't be a dream come true! Bless you!

...."The star is on its way once more, and I think I hear something else that is very special, so let’s go and see!”

He was right. The star was already smaller, but Claire was not sad this time for she still felt the joy in her heart. She placed her hand in Cherub’s. They left their billowy cushion and flew through the night once more. The snow had ceased and the pure light of the moon was beaming down on the countryside below, throwing everything into sharp relief.

“There!” he shouted and they flew lower. Claire saw they were following a ribbon of road that twisted and turned through open fields and low hills. They flew lower and lower, slower and slower, until they alighted at a deserted cross-road. Or so Claire thought – until she realised there was a man standing beside the sign-post, examining it closely and scratching his head.

Claire stared until she thought her eyes would drop out. She knew who it was! There could only be one person in the whole world who would dress in a red suit and hat decorated with fur, and wear clumpy black boots on his feet! His curly hair and beard were snow white, his face wrinkled and jolly.

“Father Christmas,” she whispered. “It can’t be…. I must be dreaming!”

The man looked over at her. “Why can’t it be? Think I’m a figment of your imagination, do you, little girl? Well, I’m not! Though, I must say, this signpost seems to be a figment of someone’s imagination. I’m useless at map reading, I know, but that sign-post tells me nothing, absolutely nothing. What on earth am I going to do?”

Claire looked around cautiously while he was speaking. If it really was Father Christmas, where were his sleigh and his reindeer – and all the presents?

The jolly man’s eyes twinkled. “Oh, they’re there alright, my dear. You just can’t see them! Nor will anyone else, either, if I can’t find my way. I’ll have to go back home without delivering any presents.”

He shook his head gloomily. “Where are you trying to get to?” asked Claire.

“Interlaken, Thun, the Gornetz Platz….

“Ooh, I live there,” Claire shouted in her excitement. Then her voice faltered. “But I don’t know where we are now - or how to get there from here….” She began to cry as she thought of all those children who wouldn’t be finding any toys in their stockings because she, Claire Maynard, was too young to know where she was or how to get home.

“Don’t cry, little one,” Cherub implored her. “And do cheer up, Father Christmas. What must Claire think of you? I know where we are. Every girl and boy will get their presents tonight, I promise you.”

Father Christmas chortled. Claire dashed the tears from her eyes and flung her arms round Cherub. “Oh, thank you, thank you,” she sang. “You know, Cherub, we could go in the sleigh with him and help him deliver all his toys. He doesn’t seem very bright, and he might miss someone out.”

“Well, I do declare, young girls get cheekier every year!” gasped Father Christmas in indignation.

Cherub grinned. “She’s got a point, though!”

His silvery laughter rippled through the air when he caught the evil twinkle in the jolly man’s eyes, then he looked at Claire. “If we go with him, we might not have time to get you home before you’re missed. Then the magic won’t work.”

“Oh, please, Cherub,” she pleaded, trying not to weep again. “Just one house – surely that wouldn’t take too long.”

Cherub stroked his little dimpled chin thoughtfully. “One house, and one house only, Claire. Then we must fly very fast.”

Before Claire could thank Cherub there was an ear-splitting whistle beside her. Clapping her hands over her ears, she saw Father Christmas had his fingers in his mouth. He whistled again. The next instant she heard the sound of jingling harness bells - and what she saw had her jumping for joy and shrieking out loud. A sleigh had materialised beside them, glowing all the colours of the rainbow and filled to the brim with sacks and toys.

“Oh, the reindeer, the lovely, lovely reindeer,” she moaned in ecstasy, and stumbled over to stroke the soft noses and thick, hairy coats. Father Christmas and Cherub smiled at each other and left her in peace for a short while so she could pat them and talk to them to her heart’s content.

However, time was marching on. Father Christmas climbed into his seat, picked up the reins and clicked his tongue. The reindeer raised their heads eagerly, sleek bodies poised and ready. Claire patted the nose of each of them one last time and then climbed into the sleigh to sit behind Father Christmas. Cherub climbed in after her and covered them both with a thick fur rug lying there. The next instant, the reindeer had sprung into the air and the sleigh was flying smoothly through the night.

Delirious with happiness, Claire gazed around in wonder, stared up at the starry sky, peered over the side of the sleigh at the carpet of snow lying everywhere below. She felt the wind rushing against her cheeks and ruffling her hair. She felt the warmth of Cherub’s hand clasping hers, felt his tender care for her and for all living creatures. She heard Father Christmas chuckling to himself as he urged the reindeer on, faster, faster….

Oh how lovely!

Thanks Mary.

Lovely, just lovely! I'm so glad the cherub can let Claire fulfil her dream of helping Father Christmas, if only for a single delivery, before it becomes imperative to get her back home safely without spoiling the magic of it all - and that we are all able to join her for the ride, too! :) :)

Thank you, Mary.

Oh dear, poor Father Christmas!! He probably isn't helped by all those glasses of assorted spirits left out for him, but I do support Lesley's proposal of leaving him a sat-nav.

Thank you Mary for this latest instalment of Claire's adventure. :santa: :santa:

My children always used to leave a glass of disprin out to counteract all the alcohol, perhaps it should have been a larger dose.
Thanks Mary this is gorgeous and I too, would like to see it as a Christmas story book.

Mary, you undermine yourself! This is well worthy of being printed with illustrations - it's on a par with Raymond Brigg's 'The Snowman'. Thank you so much, it's beautiful. :halo:

Thank you so much for the encouraging responses.

.....The next instant, the reindeer had sprung into the air and the sleigh was flying smoothly through the night.

Cherub nudged her and she jumped, realising she must have fallen asleep for a moment or two, snug and warm under the rug. Opening her eyes, she found the sleigh and reindeer were hovering over a rambling white house, the roof of which held several large chimneys. Father Christmas grasped a sack in one hand, took Claire’s hand in the other, and before she could say “Happy Christmas” they were gliding down a dark chimney and tumbling into an empty hearth.

Claire looked around and hugged herself for sheer delight. A little girl about her age was tucked up fast asleep and was smiling, as if she knew what was happening right there in her room even as she dreamed. Putting his finger to his lips, Father Christmas delved into his sack and brought out several small parcels which he handed to Claire. She packed them carefully into the beautifully-stitched stocking hanging on the bed post. They crept over to the fireplace and the jolly man hung pretty dolls and other toys there for the girl to find in the morning.

How Claire wished she had a fireplace in her own room for him to hang such toys for her! It was a jolly good job they had a fireplace downstairs at home, though, or however would he get in?

Taking Claire’s hand again, Father Christmas drew her out through the door and they sneaked noiselessly down the stairs. In one corner of the hall there stood a tall tree, reaching almost to the ceiling. Father Christmas clicked his fingers and the tree shimmered into beautiful life. Claire gazed at it in awe, but Father Christmas was delving into his sack once more and producing a parcel so huge that she gaped. How had he hidden that in his small sack? She gaped even more as several other large parcels followed the first. It just wasn’t possible. Each one was almost bigger than the sack whence it came!

Father Christmas twinkled at her. “Magic, my little friend! Christmas magic! The very best kind! Don’t worry your precious head about it!”

All too soon, the sack was empty, the tree dark once more and the two of them were tip-toeing back up the stairs. When they reached the roof Claire eyed the reindeer longingly, but she knew she had to leave. She reached up her arms to Father Christmas and he bent and picked her up, hugging her tight against his chest. She put her arms round his neck and buried her face in his curly beard. How soft it was!

“Thank you for all your help, my special Christmas elf,” he murmured. “Perhaps we’ll do it again another Christmas night.”

“Oh yes,” she breathed in ecstasy and planted a huge kiss on his cheek.

“Come, Claire,” said Cherub, holding out his hand. Claire gave her new friend another kiss and then blew one to each of the reindeer before placing her hand in Cherub’s. He wasted no time. They soared back up into the starry heavens and a loud “Merry Christmas to you, Claire,” boomed out across the world. She giggled and waved.

The sleigh turned and flew off in the other direction, and soon she saw the jolly man and his reindeer and sleigh sail across the silver face of the man in the moon. She sighed as she and Cherub flew through the night sky. Would she ever see him again? After all, she needed to be asleep when he slid down her chimney.

“Fear not, my dear,” said Cherub softly beside her. “In your heart you will always keep his memory. And who knows? Next Christmas you might have another visitor, for then you will be older and wiser, and perhaps you’ll be shown things I am too young to know or understand.”

She squeezed his hand. “I shall always remember you in my heart, Cherub. Every Christmas tree, every robin, every star, will remind me of you and our lovely, lovely adventure.”

“Be happy, Claire,” he whispered, but before she could say her farewells she was falling, falling, gently back down through the feathery fronds of her own Christmas tree in her own home……

The End
