Please feel free to correct mistakes.

Never in her life had Tom been so close to tears as she was now.
When her father had called her to his study he had come straight to the point and then he added “You understand don’t you? I cannot help it.” her father looked anxiously at the tall boyish figure standing in front of him. He suddenly realized that Tom looked different, less boyish.
The years spent in Chalet school had groomed her and now he thought, his sister would not have any complaints about Tom. She looked straight in her father’s eye and nodded. Being a vicar’s daughter she understood the problems.
“It is alright father. Do not worry” she said sturdily. ”May I go now? I am going to visit Daniel Brian. He has broken his leg and has to lie down. I am going to teach him to do something with his hands so that he doesn’t get bored.”
“Yes. And Tom, Thank you.”
Tom smiled at her father and then suddenly turned back and hugged him. Then feeling ashamed at this display of affection ran out of the room.
Her father sighed and thought “Poor girl. Wish I could do something!”
But there was nothing he could do and Tom understood it well. “I am not going to let something like that spoil my school days.” she thought to herself.

I agree that Tom would have been a great Headgirl. It would also have broken the deathlike grip that the MBR families had on the post too. I hope you can update this soon Mohini.

I wonder if Tom didn't go to St Mildred's for a year and so Tom is spending another year at Carnbach. This looks very interesting.

BTW Bride was the one from MBR clan that I completely approved of as Head Girl.

Thanks for the encouragement.
An update.

She went to the sitting room to find her mother busy with the ladies of their parish. There were new faces amongst the ladies and Tom with a hurried greeting started to escape. But it was not possible. She was introduced to the new comers who as usual made fuss about her boyish name and insisted on asking her real one. Because of the new development, her mother had to tell the soppy name even as she watched the dark clouds gathering on Tom’s brow.
At last they all went and she could sit and talk with her mother about the new problem.
“Mother do you know?”
“Yes dear”
“But why....?”
“I cannot say. These eccentric old ladies.. But your father couldn’t say no. it is too great an opportunity to miss. Think how it will help the children.”
Not to make a mystery, the facts simply put were like this. One of a very old lady had decided to donate her house for the orphans. She wanted to thank Tom for giving her the idea. Tom did not like being thanked (Being a true Chalet school girl. She tried to turn pink on being thanked but could not) but had no option. The problem was that the old lady liked to be in limelight and she wanted to thank Tom publicly. Tom would have been ready to bear that too but the lady had insisted that she would use Tom’s real name. Her father had tried to convince her but no avail. Poor Tom there was no escape. She understood that her father would not and could not refuse such a generous donation on a minor pretext.

Post subject:  Re: Tom Gay - Head GIrl

With a sigh Tom left the house to visit the poor boy who was laid up in bed. She tried to teach him art of Origami. That was something he could do lying down or sitting up slightly. Something he said gave her an idea. She had to turn her thought to other things and not think of her ordeal.
As soon as she reached home she announced to her parents “ I am going to be a missionary after I leave school. I want to go to London and work there” “That is fine” said her father. “ But when did you decide? I wish you would do something else. I am sorry we cannot afford you to go to Welsen, but that does not mean you should leave everything and go so far. Why cant you do work here?”
“ I cannot mother. Not after that woman told everyone my name. I am glad I will be off to school tomorrow or else everyone would have teased me.”
“ I am glad you are doing something for those poor kids. If you need any help, just let me know” said her father.
Tom nodded and went to do last minute packing. Tomorrow they would leave for school. She was feeling excited. A tomboy by nature, she had initially found it difficult to settle in an all girls atmosphere but soon settled down. Slowly without being aware of it, she had lost some of her tomboyish habits and could now walk without whistling. Being an honest straightforward person, she was something of a heroine to the lower school who admired her and her sporting powers.
She planned teaching the younger girls some new things she had learned and soon fell asleep.
****************************************************

As I want it to be a background for my drabble I er .. lifted it from Bride in parts

‘TOM—Tom Gay! Hi, there! Stop a minute!’
Tom Gay, who had been hurrying along the corridor leading to the Prefects’ room, paused and looked round. ‘Hello, Annis! Had decent hols?’
‘Yes, awfully, thanks. Dad was home for Christmas. But that wasn’t what I wanted to ask you about.’
Tom raised quizzical eyebrows, and the gipsy-faced girl of sixteen who had stopped her went faintly pink. ‘Not? Then what was it? Hurry up, Annis: I’ve tons to do and no time to do it in.’
‘It was just to ask you if you’d heard this yarn that’s going round about Loveday Perowne and if you know whether there’s any truth in it.’
‘Yarn? What yarn?’ Tom spoke sharply. ‘I’ve heard nothing.’
‘Well, it started with Valerie Arnott. She says that she heard during the hols that Loveday had left all of a sudden and I wondered if you’d heard anything.’
‘Not really? ’ Tom said consideringly, But I know nothing about it, so I can’t help you, I’m afraid.’
But if it is true, what about the school? Loveday’s Head Girl. What’s going to happen if she’s left in a hurry like that? It isn’t exactly a job just anyone can fall into.’
‘Oh, gosh! I hadn’t thought of that—no time, of course. The first I heard of it was just now from you.’ Tom’s brows creased in a frown. You’ll have to hold your horses till Abendessen when the Abbess’ll have something to say if it’s true. You needn’t worry about us. Someone will be appointed in Loveday’s place, you know. Now I must get cracking. See you later!’ And, with a nod, Tom sped on her way, leaving Annis looking dissatisfied.
After Adendessen, Miss Annersley stood up and rang her bell. The hum of chatter that had filled the room ceased at once. All eyes were turned to the Staff table and the girls waited for what they supposed would be her usual beginning-of-term welcome. The prefects, of course, knew better. All the same, they were keen to know just how the Head would break the news to the rest, so they listened with all their ears.
Miss Annersley told them the story briefly, merely saying that as private affairs had taken the Perowne family to South America for the next six months”‘That, of course, means that we must have a new Head Girl,’ the Head continued. ‘Our new head girl is Tom Gay. She is appointed now for the rest of the year and I am sure you all wish her a happy two terms.’
Everyone clapped loudly as Tom was popular among the girls Only Bride felt a momentary disappointment. Her name was considered last time with Loveday. But she was younger than Tom. So it was alright and she also clapped loudly.
“Rest of the prefects will continue their duty as before.”
And the girls went for prayers.

After prayers there was just time to gather in the Prefect’s room and congratulate Tom. “I will arrange a Prefects meeting soon. There are too many things to discuss. And thank you folks. I never thought I would be selected.”
Next day after breakfast the Prefects went for a walk by themselves to look at the playing fields. Most of them were keen to arrange matches as soon as possible.
“I hope some of the new girls are good players. We need some if we want to beat Red Gables this year.” Tom said
“It is my last term so I hope we win all our matches” said Elfie
“It is my last year too” said Tom “I will not be coming to Welsen”
“Why?” cried all surprised.
“We cannot afford it. No do not say anything. I cannot help it. And it is a good thing too. I will be able to start my work soon. I have decided to become a missionary”
The girls were too amazed to speak. They did not know that Tom had decided her future. She had been changing her plans every year. But now she seemed to have made a decision.
It was a very big thing and the girls were silent.
Only Bride understood how sad she was not being able to go to Welsen.
“Let us hurry back. It is time for prayers. We cannot be late. How will the juniors crow if the Prefects are late.”
After prayers were over, the Head nodded to Tom who came on the dais and turned to the school standing before her “ I thank you all for accepting me as your head girl. I will do my best to follow the tradition wet by my predecessors that means the earlier head girls Mary Lou “ she added before that young girl could get up and ask. Mary Lou turned red and tried to hide behind Vi Lucy. Tom was always on the spot. “ We have the Sale this term and I will hold a meeting of all form prefects. So be ready with your ideas. In addition the timings of practice will be soon put on the notice board and I want all of you to practice keenly. Even if you are not in the team, you should attend practice to encourage your friends. Thanks again”
The staff had to smile at this no nonsense approach

Post subject:  Re: Tom Gay - Head GIrl

A short update. I have to present a paper in our conference and have to work on it before writing about Tom. Will try to do both

NEW GIRLS
“Katherine, will you take these new girls to Matron? This” said Miss Dene pointing to a tall girl with curly brown hair ”is Janet Wills and this is Nora Johns” Nora was opposite to Janet. She was short with black straight hair. She grinned at Katherine.
“Come on” said Katherine and she led them to Matron’s room. “Come in 15 minutes” said Matron.
When Katherine returned she could hear Matron speaking “I do not care if you are the Prime Minister’s daughter. You will have to follow rules which are laid by us. You have to decide between hockey and Lacrosse” Katherine wondered whether to enter or not and then timidly knocked the door. “Enter” said Matron “ please take them to their dormies. Both are in Leafy with you.”
“Come on” said Katherine and led them to a sunny room. “These are your cubicles and you have to keep them clean.”
“What game do you play?” asked Janet “Tennis” “I want to play hockey and lacrosse and tennis and cricket. But that woman said I have to choose. it is not possible. I want to play all games and I am good at them specially tennis”
Katherine looked with open mouth at this new girl. Girls usually did not boast like this. “You will have to decide because the rule is that you can play only one game. It is tiring and can cause problem in growing girls. There will be games tomorrow and Tom will decide which game you are suited best.”
“Tom?”
“Tom Gay is our head girl. Her name is not Tom but something else. No one knows. But everyone calls her Tom. Even the teachers.”
“Don’t you wish to know her true name?” asked Nora who was quiet all this time.
“Yes. But who will ask her. She gets angry if that subject is mentioned. Are you finished now? Let us go to the common room where you can meet all the other girls” But before she could finish her sentence she saw a photo on the table “Is that..... is that.........Is he .........?” she stuttered
“Yes” said Janet in a supposedly calm voice “that is my father”

“Girls, this is Janet Wills and Nora Johns. Do you know who Janet’s father is? He is Richard Wills” looking at the blank faces “Richard Wills you idiots, the famous tennis player who has won Wimbeldon twice”
Richard Wills. Who hadn’t heard of him? His name was in newspaper daily. He was a legendary figure in tennis. The girls gathered around Janet firing questions at her. “Do you play tennis?” Carola asked her ‘Yes.But I prefer hockey and Lacrosse.”
“Do you play any games?” Betsy Lucy, the form Prefect turned to the quiet Nora “Yes. I am good at cricket.”
The form fell silent. Girls here did not boast about their accomplishment. Here both these girls were bragging.
“Which school where you in before you joined here?” asked Katherine changing the subject
“It was Chalet School at Tanswick. The Head had to go because she inherited money. About 20 girls from our school joined this school.” answered Janet
“Are the sports here any good?” “Of course they are. We have beaten 4 schools. Only we have not yet beaten Miss Macey’s school. Their cricket team is very good.”
“Now you do not have to worry. I was one of the best players in my school.”
Katherine decided to talk to these girls. After all she was supposed to look after them. She took them to a corner and said “I say, it is not done to boast. Girls do not brag here”
“But I am not bragging. I am stating facts.”
“But pride will come to a fall. You should not be overconfident”

“But I am not. If I had no confidence in myself how would I be able to play? If I say I am not good, then I will feel I was wrongly selected.”
There was something wrong somewhere thought Katherine. Her argument sounded correct.
She decided to think about the problem later and told the two girls about the school and the rules till Adendessen

Matron was looking angry. She had never met girls like this. All 20 of them. Accepted that their parents were famous but to brag? It was not done in Chalet school. And on top of it they did not seem to shrivel or crumple or even behave like a small insect before Matron. They were not rude but looked straight in her eyes while answering her. She strode into the staff room looking angry.
“Come Matey. Sit down”, said Miss Burnett “Have coffee”
“Who are these girls?” demanded Matron “I have never met such a bunch of bragging girls. Not one but all of them. They do not know the meaning of modesty? Did no one teach them to be a little less conceited?”
“Calm down Matron” said Miss Annersely. “The girls are from the School at Tanswick. It was an exclusive school for children of famous people. It has to close down. And so some of the parents decided to send their girls here”
“But why here? Why not any other school?”
“They had heard that Margia Stevens, Elisaveta, Eustacia, Nina and Joey Bettany are ex pupils of this school”
“But..”
“The girls are used to talking about their parents. Do not worry. They will settle down. Our girls are sensible. They will take care.”

Signs of a genius at work!
I was planning to write that I would not be able to post the update till September end as I will be busy in organizing a conference, when I found that I had already written an update in my file.
But the updates will be delayed. Sorry.

****************************************************
True to the Head’s prophesy, the girls were being taken care of in the common room. In the junior common room a free for all was going on. Naturally the person involved was Mary Lou who had told exactly what she thought of people who bragged to the three new girls. Anne’s mother was the famous ballerina Natalie, while June and Julie were the twin girls of the greatest singer Jenny Myers. Both June and Julie loved music and had very sweet and clear voices though June preferred to play violin and both had accompanied their mother on some tours .
“Girls! Girls! What is going on?” and the girls separated to find Tom and a very angry looking Tom standing. “No. I do not want to hear any explanation now. Clean up the room. Mary Lou and you new girl go to the cloak room and clean up yourself.”
When they returned, Tom quickly went to the root of the matter and after thoroughly scolding the shamefaced girls, gave them order marks and went on her way.

Meanwhile in the senior common room the same problem was being discussed but in a dignified way. Katherine was trying to impress upon Janet Wills and Nora Johns that it was not done to talk about one’s talent nor brag about famous parents.
“But Headmistress was doing the same when my father came here. She was telling about all the famous girls of the school. I remember there was someone called Nina and Margia and that children’s author Josephine or something.” There was a sudden silence in the room. Janet could not understand why the atmosphere became so chilly.

Finally an update.
Was busy with conference. It went well. I had to present a paper. I enjoyed it. Had the usual flurry and problems of conference.
****************************************************

Josephine Bettany is my Aunty and she is a famous writer. She was the first pupil of this school and one of the best head girl ever.” retorted Sybil quickly “You cannot speak about her like this.”
“Mrs Maynard is a well loved personality of this school.” added Clem quietly.
“She is spirit of what the school stands for” chipped in Blossom.
“But what did I say? I was just telling that your teachers also bragged about the big names. And why are you so much worked up about Miss Bettany? I have read some of her books and they were OK. Typical school girls stories. But very little sports in them. And who is Mrs Maynard?”
The girls eagerly launched on their favorite topic. Mrs Maynard or Joey Bettany as she was before her marriage to Dr Maynard whose sister was in school as a teacher; the mother of the triplets Len Con and Margot an author of books loved by all girls and how she protested against becoming Head girl and how she was one of the best and what a sensation was there when the triplets were born......
Janet and Nora looked bewildered with all the information pouring.
“But if she has girls who are 10 year old, she must be old.”
“She also has 3 boys.”
“I thought she was with you in school”
“Don’t be silly. She was in school ages ago when the school was in Tirol”
“So how do you know she was the best head girl?” asked Janet puzzled.
Lucikly for all the bell rang and all the girls went to their dormitories to sleep.

Thanks for the comments. Here is more.
****************************************************
It was a thoughtful school that went to sleep that day. Tom was eager to see how the new girls fared in games. Today there was no chance. She would have to do something tomorrow. Bride was now feeling a bit of envy. Yesterday she had been tot tired to get used to the fact. But now after one day, she wished with her heart that she was the Head girl. She would never have a chance. She settled her head more comfortably on the pillow and being a sensible girl threw the envy out of the window and went to sleep.

Katherine was thinking about the new girls. She liked them on the whole. She wondered if she could ask Janet about her father. If he could come for some function, it would be wizard. It would be nice to have some tips from him.
Janet looked like a good player. Only she would have to change her habit of boasting. But was it really boasting? What she said was true. Unless you have confidence in yourself how can you play? She thought of herself. She had started to play in school because she liked it and she knew she was good. She suddenly sat up. Was this bragging? “Now why are you sitting up?” asked matron appearing out of the blue. She had come for her rounds. “I ....... I ....... I was thinking.”
“No need to think now. Go to sleep.” “ Goodnight Matron”
Janet heard the exchange between the two. She was thinking. It seemed an odd sort of school. The girls seemed to be living on past legends. Agreed that a popular authoress was a student of this school. But that was years ago. Even before these girls were born. Did they not have any recent heroines? And they thought that she was boasting. Her father always told her to have confidence in herself. And that she understood at once was her problem. She thought that she did not want the girls to be all over her because of her father. But she did resent this total disregard. If they were keen players, they should have asked questions but no one seemed interested.

Nora was thinking about Joey Bettany. The girls seemed to like her books because they were full of adventures and if the girls were to be believed, adventured based on true events. She liked books which were based on day to day life at school. Joey Bettany’s books were so predictable. Give her Enid Blyton or Mohini any time ( Sorry I couldn’t resist that) She wondered how would Miss Bettany or Mrs Maynard feel if she, Nora, told her about her adventures. Daughter of a famous Minister, she was related to the Royal family and had been threatened and kidnapped and rescued.
Mary Lou was thinking. Clem had told her how Janet had asked how did they know that Mrs. Maynard was the best head girl. Really how did they know? She must find out. Everyone said so. It would be like a mystery. She would investigate and have clues and ........ Mary Lou was fast asleep planning her mystery.

Janet woke up early the next day. It was a nice day. Just right enough to exercise or exercise was joy to Janet. She had watched her father exercise regularly everyday whether he had a match or not. “One has to keep fit” he said. And like him, Janet always exercised in morning. So she got up. All the other girls were fast asleep. She had her bath and then changed her clothes and went silently down the staircase and opened the side door and stepped out not knowing that she was breaking rules right, left and centre . She went to the hockey pitch and started her workout which had been designed by her father.
“And what may I ask you are you doing here at this hour? Whose permission did you take?” asked a voice angrily startling Janet. She turned to find Miss Burnett looking at her with furious eyes.
“Exercising” replied Janet looking curious. She could not understand why Miss Burnett was looking so angry. She was not on the pitch. “My father planned these for me so that I can loosen up before matches. Today there is going to be selection of the team”
“Didn’t anyone tell you that you are not supposed to get up before the rising bell and take a bath only according to the list?” asked Peggy
“Well Katherine did say something but I am used to getting up early and exercising.”
“You cannot break rules like this. Report to me after Fruckstuck. Now go straight to your dormitory and stay there till the bell rings.”
A puzzled Janet walked back slowly to her dormy followed by an angry Peggy who was starting to have a headache. Janet to her credit really had no idea that what she had did was wrong. She did not know that health was given prime importance in CS and all exercises were monitored carefully.
The rising bell had rung and the girls were all waking up. “Janet you are the first bather” said Katherine “Janet Janet. Girls have you seen Janet? Janet what are doing outside? Have you already taken your bath? Why what is the matter?”
“I had gone to exercise when Miss Burnett caught me and said I could not exercise” said a crestfallen Janet.”
“Are you mad?” said Sybil
“Girls Girls. Keep quiet. Clem you are next. Go quickly. The bell will ring soon” said Betsy Lucy.
Janet was now fuming. But she kept quiet. After breakfast, the Head rang a bell. “Tom wants to say something”
Tom got up and said in a clear voice “There will be trials for selection of teams for hockey. All girls will come on the ground in 15 minutes. Thank you”
There was a buzz of excitement among the girls. All the girls interested in Hockey were eager to start. But they had to first finish making their beds.
Janet went in search of Miss Burnett. She was nowhere to be seen. As she as wandering around, Miss Stewart caught her “What are you doing here?”
Really thought Janet, the teachers here seemed so angry. She explained. “Miss Burnett is not feeling well. She is lying down in San”
Barely stopping to say Thank you, Janet ran off to the grounds to find the senior selection already over.

Post subject:  Re: Tom Gay - Head GIrl

Tom started to scold her for being late but luckily, Nora and Katherine were there to explain. So trials were taken and naturally Janet was selected. She was good. There was no doubt about that. But Tom’s comments about not being interested had made her angry. And among her qualities, Janet harbored revenge of some sort. So she started studying Tom carefully. She wanted to find something which would hurt Tom. She started with Rosalie. Rosalie was Tom’s best friend and Rosalie was interested in Tennis. So Rosalie was ecstatic when Janet started taking to her. She asked many questions about her famous father. Rosalie’s joy was complete when Janet gave her an autographed photo of her father. Though it had started as revenge, a deep friendship was developing between the girls.
Both were interested in sports and the breathless admiration of Rosalie was a soothing balm for Janet who still resented the lack of interest shown by other girls.
But sadly Janet’s plan was not working. Tom did not show any signs of jealousy.
Thankfully the school kept everyone so busy that Janet had no time to plan anything else immediately.
“They are going to discuss about the Sale today. Tom has called meeting of all the Form Prefects to discuss the theme for Sale.” an excited Katherine told Janet one morning. “Sale? What Sale?” We have a Sale to collect money to pay for a bed in San. for children. We usually have Sale on themes. We had a Fairy Tale Sale and All Nations and many other. I wonder what theme they will choose this time.”
“Can’t we suggest something or it is the Form Prefects only who decide?” asked Nora.
“You can tell your idea to your Form Prefect and then she can suggest it in the meeting. Do you have any idea? You can tell Betsy Lucy”
“I hope we have something about sports.” said Janet.
But they had to stop taking as the bell started to ring.
“Come on” said Katherine and went to join the line in the corridor.

****************************************************
Mary-Lou had collected all her close friends. She wanted to unravel the mystery. “Why did you call all of us here?” demanded Vi Lucy. “Are all of us here? I have an idea. Yesterday the older girls were taking about how Aunty Joey was one of the best head girls ever and Janet said how they knew. So I decided to find out and you are going to help me.” said Mary Lou in one breath.
“Oh are we? Who said so?” asked Lesley.
“Oh we are the Gang and this will be our first mystery” replied Mary-Lou.
“What do we have to do?”
Mary –Lou who had thought deeply about it said “ Who were the girls during Aunty Joey’s time? We will ask them. Vi Lucy you ask Miss O’Ryan. Lesley you talk with Burnie, Hilary you write to Miss Linton and Verity ...”
“Wait wait. And what will you be doing, if I may ask?”
“I will ask Auntie Joey.”
“If Auntie Joey was one of the best, who were the others?” asked the silvery voice of Verity.
“Does anyone have any different ideas or better ideas?” asked Mary Lou. Think for 2 minutes.
The girls thought furiously. This was a real mystery and this was interesting. Life was becoming monotonous. So this would be a nice change. And the name Gang sounded grand. It was unique and better than the SSM or Triumvirate.
“But how are we going to start?” said Lesley practically. “We cannot just go to the person and say why do you think Joey was one of the best head girls?”
“Nnnnooooooo. That is true. We will have to think of something.”
“I know.I know. We want to write an article for the Mag about head girls and we want to find out who the best head girl was” cried Vi Lucy suddenly.
“Yes. And we will make a list of all the qualities needed for the best head girl”
The ideas started to come out fast. So they made a plan and divided the task amongst themselves.
“Will Miss Annersely allow us?” asked Verity suddenly
There was a hush. “We will take her permission. After all we are just going to ask all the girls.” said Mary Lou.

Post subject:  Re: Tom Gay - Head GIrl

For Mary Lou, to think was to act and so she was all ready to go to Miss Annersely immediately. She was impatient to start. “Wait.” cautioned Vi Lucy the most sensible member of the gang. “You cannot go now. Go tomorrow evening” “Why?” “Because tomorrow you can speak in English” So Mary Lou waited patiently till the evening and after looking in the mirror to see if her hair was neat, she danced to Miss Annersely’s study and knocked the door. “Enter!”
“Why what is the problem Mary Lou?” asked the Head and even Rosalie looked curious. Mary Lou looked alright. So there must be no bad news from home. Nor she looked as if she was in a fight or afraid. So why was Mary Lou here?
“I want to ask something.” said Mary Lou. Now that she was in front of the Head, she felt awkward. Was she being too bold? “I want to find out why Aunty Joey was one the best Head girls ever. Do you also think so?”
“What? Why?” The Head looked bewildered. So Mary Lou poured out the whole story to the surprised audience who dared not look at one another as they were dying to laugh. This was so typical Mary Lou.
“Well I cannot answer your question now. I will have to think about it. But yes. You have my permission to question the mistresses and also the girls. But I do not think if anyone today was a student when Jo was the Head girl.”
“No.No. That is true.” nodded Mary Lou. “We have been discussing that but other girls might have heard about it from the older girls.”
“Alright. What now?” asked the Head as Mary Lou did not depart?
“Will you tell the girls and the mistresses why I am asking such questions? Or else they will feel as if I am taking liberties.”
The Head agreed and at last Mary Lou skipped out leaving the Head and her secretary to break into peals of laughter.
“We got permission” yelled Mary Lou to her gang as soon as she joined them. “Oh sorry! I did not see you Bride.”

“Why are you shouting?” demanded Bride
“We got permission from Miss Annersely to question the mistresses”
“Question the mistresses? About what? Are you mad?”
“No. No. We are trying to find out why Auntie Joey was one the best Head girls ever.”
“She was.”
“How do you know?”
“Everyone says so. Now stop chattering and get out your books”
Bride left the form room grinning. Mary Lou had certainly made her think. When Tom was selected as Head girl, Bride had felt a small prick of jealousy. Did she think she would have been a better head girl? What were the qualities of a good head girl?
“Why such a thoughtful expression?” asked Julie Lucy as Bride entered the Prefect’s room.
“Mary Lou”
“I do not think Mary Lou can lead to a thoughtful expression.”
“Because it is not a typical Mary Lou”
“Do not talk in puzzles. Explain”
Before Bride could explain, there was a knock on the door and the prefects of all the classes entered for the meeting.
“We are here to discuss something important” said Tom calling the meeting to attention. “We want to decide the topic for our Annual Sale. Anyone has any idea? Yes Betsy”
“May we have a sports sale?”
“A sports sale? How do you arrange that?”
“Have different sports for different stalls. For lucky dip we will have a swimming pool where all presents will float and for toys section, we will put hockey goal post.....”
“I do not think it is practical” interrupted Bride “Whose idea is it?”
“Janet’s”
Ideas then started coming fast. After 10 minutes when the noise started increasing, Tom banged on the table “Quiet please. Less noise! We cannot decide like this. I have an idea.”
The girls grew quiet. “Is it always necessary to have some theme for Sale?”
“What do you mean?” asked Julie.
“I do not like dressing up and every time there has been a Sale .there has been some mishap.”
“Yes it is true. Auntie Joey fell on Miss Wilson, and Carola burned her hands in one and the babies always cry at least some of them.”
“So why can’t we have a plain Sale”
“A plain sale?”
“Yes. We put stalls and put the things neatly and dress in our simple frocks. We will be comfortable, nor will we spend time arranging and decorating the hall nor will we feel hot and tired. We display the merchandise and sell it.”
There was a pin drop silence. It was a totally new idea. Many girls liked dressing up, specially the younger ones, but what Tom said was true. It was very hot in those dresses and one could not have fun for the fear or tearing or spoiling the dress. It would be different something which no one had done before. Suddenly the girls started feeling excited. This was a novel way and so easy to arrange otherwise it always taxed their ingenuity to arrange the things.
“We will have to get permission from Miss Annersely first. And we will have to think of an alternative theme if she does not agree with this.”

“We can have a Future theme. We go as people we want to be when we grow up.” quipped in Vi Lucy who had been quiet all the time. “What do you mean?” asked Tom “You know some of us want to be teachers, some want to work in garden, some will look after the house. So we dress accordingly.”
“That is good” said Julie and Vi Lucy flushed. A compliment form her eldest sister was rare. “We can divide the stalls according to the job. As teachers we can wear gowns, the outdoor workers can wear overalls, the babies can come as school children.”
“In this way we can combine Tom’s idea and allow girls to dress up” said Bride.
So it was agreed that if the Head did not allow a Plain Sale, they would suggest a career sale.
As the juniors went off, the Prefects sat down to discuss the details. Soon, Julie turned to Bride and said” Now tell me why you were so thoughtful?”
“Mary Lou asked me why Auntie Joey was considered the best head girl ever by all of us. How do we know?”
“Because everyone says so” said Nancy Chester.
“But how do they know. No one in the school at present was there when Auntie was the head girl. Some of the mistresses were students in those times. But what evidence do we have? Have they ever talked about some incidents when it was seen that Auntie proved herself?”
“What are the qualities of a good head girl?” asked Julie
“She should be helpful, approachable and able to make decisions” said Beth Herbert.
“But doesn’t that description fit most of the girls here?” wondered Bride
“Well what makes a bad Head girl?” she added
“One who cannot make decisions on her own, one who is not involved in others, one who is not tactful” said Tom. “Hey you chaps, do you think I am not fit to become a Head Girl?”
“No. Don’t be silly. We are not talking about you and since you mentioned it, I feel you are the right choice. You are helpful though you may not like tears but you do understand who needs help – Annis for example. All of us knew she was afraid of fog but you remembered on time and took immediate action. We are talking in general.”
“Well I feel we should stop talking about this and go and meet Miss Annersely to see if she likes our idea. We will also take permission to arrange a Hobbies meeting this evening to see how much work is done.”

Miss Annersely agreed for the plain Sale grinning to herself. So typical of Tom. She also agreed to let them have a Hobbies club evening next day.
“It is Hobbies tomorrow.” Katherine said to Janet while they were waiting for the girls to line up after dinner. “What hobby do you have? We produce many things and keep them for Sale.” ‘Why?” “What why” asked Katherine.
“Why do you have a Sale?”
“So that we can collect money and use it for a free bed in San for a sick child”
“But why can’t you just collect money?” wondered Nora
“It is more fun this way.”
Janet was thoughtful. She did not understand these girls. But she liked the idea of hobbies. She wondered if she could have any hobby related to sports.
The next day, all the girls gathered in the big Hall with their hobbies collected from the cupboard. The girls from Tanswick were amazed to see the different hobbies the Chalet girls had! Some girls did beautiful embroidery, some made pencil sketches, some knitted, some stitched clothes. Tom, they were told always made a Doll house. Since it was not finished, she had not brought it here. It was in the Barn where carpentry was done.
“What would you like to do?” asked Tom to the new girls. The younger girls were already helping the Gang to make puzzles.
“We want to do something related to sports. I have an idea.” said Nora “From where can we get the materials which we need?”
“What are you planning? I have to know or else how can I arrange the stall.” said Tom
“I want to make small drawing of all pitches.”
“What?”
“Draw a Hockey ground and write measurements of it. And also write down the positions. Like this point is centre forward, this is left wing etc. And do the same for the other games also. And make charts like this. It will be drawn to the scale.”
“That is a wonderful idea! You will need some paper and paints. You have a scale I hope?”
“Yes”
So the 2 girls sat down to draw the hockey ground. It was a meticulous job and they could only finish the basic lines when the bell rang.

Thanks for the comments.. Here is more
****************************************************
The school soon settled down to its routine. The girls were kept occupied through out the days. Even the new girls found it easy to settle. The Chalet authorities were experienced in teaching geniuses and the girls were given enough time to practice and learn. Regular games practice was also being held preparing the selected players for the forthcoming matches. Only Janet was a little dissatisfied. But she could not find the cause of this vague feeling of incompleteness. She was missing something from her old school. And it was after the 4 weeks had passed, she found out what it was.
It had been raining for 3 days continuously and it was not possible to go out. The girls had worked for Sale but it was getting boring. The seniors were sitting in their common room while the Prefects were busy with their meeting. The senior common room was a cheerful place. But Janet was feeling irritable. There was nothing to do. She looked around and saw her mates busy. Some were taking quietly; some were knitting; some were reading. And she suddenly found out what was missing. The middles were not here. They had their own common room. In their old school, all the girls sat together. Here the middles and seniors were separated and they met very rarely. Not that the middles minded it much. The less contact they had with the big girls the better it was.
But the girls from Tanswich knew each other outside the school and were used to play together.
Janet realized that she was missing the middles. June and Julie Myers had been her special friends and they always shared their secrets with her and would come to her with their problems ever since she could remember. Here it had been impossible to get a chance to talk to them or even have a glimpse of them.
She decided to go and meet them. She signaled Nora and the 2 slipped out of the room and went to the middles common room. Nobody missed them till Julie came searching for Janet. She wanted to discuss some point about the match planned next week. “I do not know where they are.” said Katherine. I did not see them go out. Shall I go and search?” added Betsy Lucy her puckish face gleaming at the thought of wandering all around the school.
“No” said her sister. “Thanks for offering. But we cannot have you people wandering about.”
Before anyone could say anything, the door opened and a furious Tom stood “Get inside. You two can report to the Prefects this evening.” she said and walked away.
Janet and Nora entered the room. Everyone was silent. No one could ask anything. Then Katherine said tentatively “Are you all right? Where were you?”
“We had gone to the Middles common room.”
“Why? Didn’t you know it is forbidden to roam in the corridors?”
“And why such a affection for those kids?” added Clem
“I do not understand your rules and things not done. What is wrong with talking to the kids? How can we get to know them if we do not interact? They are just like us. Why are we always on our dignity? Why can’t we mingle? We used to play together when we were small. We even spent holidays together. So why in the school should we be separate? In our school we spent our free time in one common room, had tea together and.....” Janet was really upset. She loved the kids and in her old school used to spend her free time teaching about various sports and telling them stories about sport legends.
In turn they told her about their problems and their adventures. She was missing all that here. Today, she had gone to the middles common room and was soon enjoying the company. The girls were also feeling proud that a senior had descended in their midst and without quoting rules was behaving like one of them. She had been in a middle of a funny story and had the whole middles laughing when the door had opened and Tom stepped in. She had been on her way to put on the matches list when she heard laughter coming from the middles common room and had stepped in to investigate. On finding Janet and Nora she had just asked them to accompany her and had led them to their common room. Tom was a strict follower of rules and in her eyes this breaking of rule was a crime.

****************************************************

Janet and Nora entered the Prefects room after knocking. All the Prefects were sitting around a table and looking at them. They looked so big and serious. “Sit down” said Tom pointing 2 chairs at the bottom of the table. The girls sat down.” Now what do you have to say for yourself?” asked Julie
“I do not think we have done anything wrong. In our school all the girls used to mix together and talk to each other and play together. I was missing those twins and went to talk with them.” said Janet. “”Janet can tell wonderful stories and we were telling stories to the kids. There is nothing wrong in that.” “This rule of separating the girls is not correct” added Janet
“Now who are you to say the rules of this school are wrong? You broke a rule while leaving the common room. You are not allowed in the corridor during that time.” Tom said.
“But I do not understand why you are making such a fuss about a smell thing? Surely you must be missing taking to your younger sisters and their friends? Don’t you play together in holidays or you are Prefects in your home also?” Janet was looking puzzled.
“Next time take permission before going out of the room. You had told no one where you were going. Your Form Prefect would have been in trouble. You were rude to the Head girl when she caught you in the Middles Form room. So you apologize to the Head Girl and to your form Prefect. You may go now.” said Bride after a glance at Tom.
The girls apologized and went away. Only Bride noticed a triumphant look on Janet’s face as she glanced at Tom before leaving the room.
“Why are you looking thoughtful?” asked Bess Herbert to Julie.
“What she said was true. In holidays also there is a bit constrain between us. Vi Lucy cannot speak openly about school in front of me; especially about the seniors. It is not so much with Betsy. But now when I think, I do not know very much about Vi’s friends or likes or dislikes or even in which subject she is good. Initially she used to come to me with difficulties but now we rarely talk. This is not correct. If we are in the same building there must be some way where we can meet and talk. After all she is my kid sister.”
“When did this start? I mean having separate common rooms? I remember Auntie Joey telling us about the time when all the girls used to sit together in one common room and the seniors would serve tea or coffee and biscuits and there would be no supervision by the mistresses. The girls talked or sat together and discussed things. The idea of the hobby club started from there only” said Bride
“I think it became necessary to have separate common rooms as the number of girls increased. First there were very few girls hence they could be accommodated in one room. But we should interact with the younger girls. We only will have to see that they do not get too matey and forget that we are Prefects.”
“No. I do not think that will happen. Our girls know their limits.”
On this note the Prefects dispersed. Only Bride and Nancy Chester remained to lock the room. “Did you see the look Janet gave Tom? What did it mean?” “You noticed it too?” said Nancy “I did not understand the expression. It was as if she had decided something. I wonder what she will do. We will have to be on guard.” “We cannot tell Tom about it. She will not understand” ‘I know it is not a gentleman thing” grinned Bride as they closed the room.
They found they were correct in their assessment in the next few days. The were keeping their eyes open and thus were aware that Janet was in some ways infuriating Tom who seemed angry whenever Janet was near. Bride and Nancy could not understand. Tom was trying hard to keep her temper but every time Janet came near her Tom would turn red and her eyes would flash.
Bride asked Tom but she said it was nothing.

****************************************************
Meanwhile Mary Lou was investigating her mystery. She had started to move around the school with a paper and pencil in her hand. She started with her own form. She would catch hold of that girl and ask “Who, in your opinion was the best head girl ever? And why?”
Some of the girls answered quickly while some of them decided to tease Mary Lou.
“Best head girl ever? Why Marilyn Evans of course because she did not interfere with us”
Some of them said Joey Bettany. And when asked why they could not explain. Phil Craven said “Because everyone says so.”
“Really Phil can you not argue from cause to effect as Miss O’Ryan says?” enquired Mary Lou imitating Biddy O’Ryan. “And what do I say if I may so ask Mary Lou?” asked a voice very politely. Mary Lou was nonplussed for a moment. “Sorry Miss O’Rayn I did not mean to be rude. I was asking Phil who in her opinion was the best head girl ever”
“Now if you have completed your survey, may we begin with the lesson?”

“That Mary Lou. Really she is a limit. What started this off?” Biddy asked later in the staff room. Miss Annersely who was present explained.
“Was Joey really so good as everyone says?” asked Miss Moore.
“She was always on the spot” said Biddy
“She was just” added Peggy
“She was not tactful” said Miss Slater
“But she was loved by all” thus Matey.
“But doesn’t that apply to all the other Head girls we had? So what makes Joey so special? Why does everyone quote her name when head girls are mentioned.?” a puzzled Miss Moore asked.
“You know I never thought about it. The girls have fallen in a habit of idolizing Joey.” said a thoughtful Rosalie. “I wonder how it started.”
“I think Cornelia was responsible for it” said Peggy Burnett.
“Cornelia!! What do you mean?” exclaimed half the staff.
“You know how Corney idolized Joey. And with her there was Polly. It was I think when Corney was the Head girl. Both of them would say “What would Joey have done in such a situation and would take necessary steps. Kitty told me. She got it from the Robin.”
“It must have been difficult for Corney.” said Rosalie.” We had started as a new school after coming to England and there were new girls and the fear of war and its consequences.”
“I guess that is why Corney turned to Joey. But Joey was busy with her new marriage and could not come regularly. And so Corney would think what Joey would do and act accordingly.”
“Hmm. What you say is true Jeanne. So Corney was responsible for this.”
“Well the next head girls also worshipped Joey and so the trend continued. In the later years it became fashion to say Joey was one of the best head girl ever.” added Peggy who was secretly hurt that her sister’s name was never mentioned as best. She was one of the most beloved head girls.

Here is the next part. Sorry it is taking so long.
****************************************************
The Prefects were also discussing the same thing. In the end they could not reach any conclusion. Then Nancy had an idea. “Let us put it as a vote.”
“But the girls do not have an idea about all the head girls. And the new girls will not be able to vote.” objected Rosalie
“Let us give a brief sketch of the head girl and the problems she faced and then the girls will vote.” said Bess Herbert.
“And Rosalie will do it.”
“What. No. No. I cannot.”
“Yes. You can. You gather all the information about the head girls. You will get many things from the school magazine. We have old issues with us.” said Tom.
“Let us go now for the Hobbies.”
They all went to the hall where all the things made by the girls were displayed. The authorities had decided to give the toys section to the fifth and sixth forms. The girls were an enterprising lot. Few of them made animal models, others made doll clothes. Many of the girls helped in furnishing the doll house made every year by Tom. The Prefects entered the common room. A group of girls were surrounding a table admiring the pitches made by Janet and Nora. They had worked very hard and the pitches were very detailed. There was also a display of name of teams for cricket with Captain and Wicket Keeper and all. Tom turned bright red as she read the names. Tom congratulated the girls on their perfection, suggested a spelling mistake but said that there was no need to display names.
But the girls wanted to see Tom’s house. Every year Tom made a doll house and there was a competition for it. Janet, who was angry about the mistake pointed by Tom, moved with the others to see the doll house.
It was a massive affair. Tom had made a school this year instead of the usual house. It had a big playground outside and then there was a hall with stairs. There were classrooms with small benches made by the girls interested in woodcrafts. There were small blackboards and tiny maps painted by Polly Winterton. There was a science lab with the tables and small beakers and test tubes. It was a very elaborate affair and for a moment the girls just watched silently as Rosalie and Tom pointed out the details.
“Oh Tom it is wonderful!!” all exclaimed.
“Oh but all helped. The furniture was done by the fifth and the maps by Polly.”
“But there are so many mistakes” said Janet
“Mistakes?” quried Bride
“Yes. See the tiles on the roof are not painted properly. Here this one is light and this one is broken. The maps are not correct. The benches are not in a line. There is no door in this room.”
“Now wait What do you mean by pointing out the mistakes?” a very angry Nancy asked
“But if you want it to be perfect you have to correct those mistakes”
“But they are very slight and not noticeable.”
“Girls! Girls! Do not quarrel.” interrupted Tom “You have given me an idea. Let us find out how many errors are there and that would be the competition. It will be different from the usual ones we had.”
There was a great noise as all the girls started participating until Tom whistled loudly. “Quiet Please! It wont do to bring the mistresses on us”
“But are there enough errors in this?” asked Bess Herbert
“No but we can add.” So they discussed about what subtle mistakes they could add so that it would be enough for competition. In the end they could make upto 35 mistakes only.
“And we could write down the name of the Head girl of this school on the board.” said Janet who was furious that her effort did not make Tom angry.
The girls had a nice time thinking of all their favorite names like Lavania, Malvania, Valentina, Jane, Jamintha, etc. “How about Lucinda Muriel?” said Janet suddenly. Tom turned bright red. But before she could utter a single word, there was an outcry from the other girls.
“No one has a name like that.” cried Katherine
“It does not seem like a name of a good Head girl” added Blossom “It feels too sentimental and mushy.”
Luckily for Tom who was controlling her anger the bell rang for Abendessen and Bride said quietly “We will discuss this later. Let us go. Come Tom. Come on.” and she nearly dragged Tom out of the room while the other girls laughing picked up the things and stacked them in the cupboard

Here is the next installment.
****************************************************
There was no time for Bride to discuss with Tom that day as she was called away for practice of the play which was to be presented on the day of Sale.
Tom was glad because she was not ready to face Bride. She for one moment had thought that Bride had let out the secret of her name. Then she felt ashamed for having such thoughts. Bride would never do it.
Now she was sitting in her room watching Mary Lou clean the cupboard which did not need cleaning as Tom was a neat creature by nature. But Mary Lou had to be punished for being cheeky to a Prefect and Tom hence made her clean and dust all her shelves.
There was a knock on the door and Bride entered. “Now Tom” “Oh bother you Bride” “No we have to get this out. How does she know? Who told her? Did you think I would...of course not, you would not, but who told her and why is she using it?”
“I do not know. She has been whispering it whenever we pass, even while we are playing. It distracts me. You know how I hate that name. And now she is threatening to tell it to everyone”
“Oh!”
“I cannot let everyone know. It is such soppy name. Think what fun the juniors will have if they know what the initials stand for.”
“Ohhhh! Was she talking about your name?” piped in Mary Lou suddenly startling both the seniors.
“Who? Mary Lou! What are you doing here? How much did you hear?” asked Bride.
“What are you taking about? Who said what about my name? No. No Do not tell me.”
“What can we do?” asked Bride.
“I know. Why dont you tell it yourself” said Mary Lou. As usual she had managed to take away their breath. It was not cheek, it was just Mary Lou.
Before Tom could react, Bride said to Mary Lou “Now go back to your common room and mind you not a word to anyone about this.”
“But what about my punishment” started Mary Lou and then looking at the storm rising in Bride’s eyes ran away.
“You know, what Mary Lou has said is correct. Why dont you tell about it. it will take the wind out of Janet’s sails.”
“But the names! Wont the girls tease me about it.”
“I do not think they will. We are so used to calling you Tom that even if we want, we cannot call you by your true names. You are Tom. You cannot be Lucinda Muriel. It will be a gentlemanly thing to do”
And that really convinced Tom. And Tom being Tom was not ready to wait long. So it was during the next assembly that after the prayers, Tom came forward after taking permission from a puzzled Miss Annersely and announced “I have heard whispers regarding my name. To put and end to all the wrong rumors, I want to say that my initials stand for Lucinda Muriel.” Before the flabbergasted staff and the girls could react, Janet got up and said “I am sorry Tom. It was my fault.” “Well I would prefer if you all forget those names. I will not answer if anyone calls me by those names. Do you understand?”
thundered Tom “Yes Lucinda Muriel!” chorused the school. Tom suddenly laughed. The whole school felt a surge of respect for their head girl who was brave enough to tell her name and who could laugh at herself.
And so the problem of Tom’s name solved, the school settled down and prepared for the Sale. Janet had been called by Miss Annersely and was shown the error of her way.

how lovely to see Janet exposing a lot of the "myths" of the school. She's a really interesting character and I love how she is quietly subversive. I'm longing to see what conclusions the girls come to about "the best head girl ever". And I'm anticipating a meeting between Joey and Janet... with great glee! I think Joey might just have met her match for once.
BTW- Mohini, you asked for comments about your writing - I think you've got a unique voice, great characterisation and a really interesting storyline.

Thanks for the comments.
The delay was because I was busy (not the Joey way) thinking about the play's plot. Being a non christian, I was worrying about making mistakes. But finally thought of one which was very non specific.
Hope you all enjoy it.

****************************************************
“Good evening girls! I know you must be eager to hear about the play. It is written by Mrs. Maynard Auntie Joey to some of you. And I do not know how she did it, but it is very apt for our Sale theme. It is a very simple play.”
Then she proceeded to read out the play. It was set in a school with boarders and non boarders. The girls do not mix and both want to stage a play for competition. The teachers tired with the quarrels decide to let them both stage the play in front of the staff and the better one would be selected. The rest of the play dealt with how the girls practice and how the spirit of Christmas slowly changes them and how their differences are solved in the end and how they get-together to stage a wonderful play. Miss Annersely read out the dialogues and the hall rang with the girls’ laughter because Joey had written them remembering her school days. So there was lot of tongue in cheek dialogues and some slang.
“You would not need many props as the action takes place in the school hall. And you can wear your own school dresses so no extra dressing or fitting will be needed. We will declare the cast tomorrow.”
There was a loud round of clapping and Mary Lou shouted “Three Cheers for Auntie Joey” and turned red as Miss Annersely looked at her.

****************************************************
The school was busy. Rehearsals for the play were going on regularly. There was a chance for all interested to have a small role in play. There was also hobbies and everyone was working furiously to have maximum items for sale. The new girls had been explained about how the money collected would be used to have a free bed for a poor kid in the San.
“Oh then our parents can also donate” said Janet to Katherine. “I know my father will willingly give all his match earnings. Or the twin’s mother will give collections of one of her programs.
“No. It cannot be done. We have to collect the money from our things only by our effort.” said a shocked Katherine after she recovered her breath.
“But I do not understand. We will collect more money. We can have 2 chalet school beds. If all parents contribute we can have a ward”
All the fifth formers started open mouthed at her. They were speechless. All of them then tried to explain to her and there was such a noise that it was not surprising that the Prefects came to see what was happening.
“Now what is going on? Are you seniors or juniors?” asked Tom.
“No. Do not speak all at once. Katherine you tell me.”
Katherine explained and now it was the Prefects turn to look angry. Really this new girl had extraordinary ideas. But before any of them could say anything Tom said “What you say is correct. We can have a whole ward. But it would be worthwhile if we can do it ourselves. No. Let me finish. I agree taking money from parents would be a great help. But do you know, all parents will not be able to pay the same amount. I know my parents will not be able to pay same amount as your parents. And there would be a comparison between the girls. Specially the juniors. When we collect for the beds it is our efforts. All the girls put in same energy and effort. There is no competition here. All of us are equal and that is why it is better to have only one bed.”
There was a silence as all the girls digested what Tom said. They had all felt this but Tom had put it in words.
Even Janet kept quiet. It made sense. She remembered the fierce competition among the girls in her old school when some of the parents gave gifts to the school. June and Julie still felt ownership for the grand piano donated by their mother. She apologized to Katherine and went to search for the twins. Thanks to her visit, the girls were now allowed to mingle. And though the girls did not say anything openly, they secretly rejoiced because there was a good deal of friendship among the girls and the various cousins and sisters despite the difference in ages. And it did well for the girls to mix. The elder girls came to know the younger ones. And the younger girls found that the elders were approachable.

Thanks.
Sorry for a long delay in update. Mind was full of other things. Will try to finish soon

Miss Annersely woke up early and realized something was missing. She stared at the ceiling wondering about it. Then she realized. She was missing the anxiety felt on the day of Sale. Usually there were so many things to do. But today, she was relaxed. The hall was ready with the stalls for displaying the things made by the girls; the stage was ready there was no need for elaborate decorations. Even the girls could get up a bit late if they wanted because there was no need to dress them with the costumes. They would be wearing their school uniforms.
This simple theme of Tom was nice. Yesterday’s practice had gone well according to Biddy who was directing it this time.
She got up leisurely and was startled to hear a knock on the door. “Come in” she said and looked surprised as Rosalie entered with a tray “No. No. Do not get up I brought you tea. Relax. Everything is ready” Hilda smiled her thanks and laid back with a sigh. “I was getting worried because there is no need to worry. Everything seems to be going on fine. I hope this is not the calm before the storm.”
“Do not worry. There goes the rising bell. I have to go”
The girls got up some slowly, some in a hurry. Everywhere the hum of the girls’ voices could be heard. Though rules were not in full force, the girls were good enough to keep their voices low.
Soon afterwards, the Prefects went to the Hall to see the arrangements. The Hall was divided into various stalls. Long tables were kept on which the wares were displayed in the best possible manner. The doll house stood in one corner with the play fields prepared by Janet arranged near by. It looked very first-class.
“It looks so plain.” said Rosalie daringly. Can’t we decorate it a bit? Make it more Christamassy?” “And make it messy? No” said Tom. “It looks neat and simple and clean”

Here is a little bit.

The mistresses were in the staff room discussing the Sale. They were all looking relaxed. There was no hurry to do anything. “This plain sale is a good idea.” said Biddy. Miss Annersely nodded. She was deep in a book.
“What are you reading?” Matron asked “ The grand Sophy by Georgette Heyer”
Suddenly there was a rush of feet and Rosalie entered looking worried.
“What is the matter? Wait. Sit Take deep breathes. Give her water” Matron took charge.
After a while Rosalie sat up looking better. “Richard Willis called. He is willing to open the Sale”
“What?” “Why?” “How?”
“But why are you worried?” asked Nancy Wilmot.
“We had asked him earlier, but he said he would not be able to come today as he had some previous appointments.” said Miss Annersley putting down her book.
“So what is the problem? I do not understand.” Nancy said looking puzzled.
“We then requested Lady Emsworth to open the Sale. She agreed.”
There was a silence.
“But can’t we ask Lady Emsworth to allow Richard Willis to open?”
“Are you mad Nancy? Don’t you know how much insulted Lady Emsworth will be? As such she is a very stuck up lady too proud of herself. We called her because we had no other choice. And she was suggested to us by Madame.”
“There is no need to be worried. I have an idea.” said Miss Annersely calmly.

Thanks for the kind comments. Here is a bit more

Tom led the school to the hall .All the girls were looking fresh and clean. She asked the prefects to help the girls to settle in their various places. Some chairs were arranged in front of the stage for the parents. The play was to be performed in the evening. The hall and the girls were ready when the Head entered with her 2 distinguished guests. The Prefects looked at each other puzzled. Who was going to do the honors of opening the Sale. Mary Lou was about to speak but Vi Lucy with a great presence of mind squeezed her hand. Miss Annersely led her guests on the stage and clapped her hands.
The girls who were whispering quietly, stopped.
“Girls we are very lucky to have 2 distinguished guests amidst us. Every year we hold a Sale to support at least one bed in the San for a poor child. Our Sales have become well known in this area and it has become an important part of our school curriculum. And that is why this year the Sale will be opened not by one by 2 guest Lady Emsworth who is a well known Philanthropist and Mr. Richard Willis who is a well known tennis Player.”
The staff gave a sigh of relief as Lady Emsworth graciously stepped up and gave short speech and declared the Sale open. Richard Willis also stepped up after her and said “I am not going to say anything. I want to see what you have done”
Miss Annersely led Lady Emsworth while Mr. Willis was accompanied by Miss Wilmot and Miss Stewart. The parents followed and within no time the tables began to look empty.
Tom’s school house was everyone’s favorite. Some of the little girls were not able to tear themselves away from it. In the end it was won by Janet’s father. “What are you going to do with it, father?” asked Janet. “I am going to donate it to the children’s ward in our local hospital.” “But you cannot take it.” said Tom. “Why?” “We have to make the corrections.” Mr Willis laughed and agreed to wait for one more day. “Would you like to come with me ?” he asked Janet. “We will go tomorrow. You can show the children how to make the grounds. They are very precise”
Janet glowed. Praise from her father was rare. “But the school house was made by Tom.”
“Oh Tom can come with us too. I hope you can come. I will ask your Head mistress.”
For a moment Tom’s face lighted up but then she said “Thank you for your offer. But I cannot come. We have a match against Red Gables tomorrow.” “But it is a friendly match.” said Janet “True. But I cannot leave the team in a lurch.” “I understand” said Mr. Willis “You are right.”

Here is the last bit.

The next day, Mr. Willis waited to watch the match. It was very exciting. He was amazed to see Tom’s game. It was skillful. Her bowling specially was very accurate. After the match which the Chalet school won narrowly by 2 runs, he went to talk with Tom. “ That was a great display. You have a powerful arm for a young girl. You know, they are going to have a woman’s cricket team in our club. Would you like to join our club?” “Yes. Do Tom” said Janet who was standing nearby. The grounds are up to date. And some of the National players have agreed to play. It will be wonderful.” ‘No. No I cannot” “Why?”
“I cannot afford the club fee.”
“That will not be a problem. I can pay for you. Wait this is not charity. You will get paid for playing for the club and you can pay me back. They want to promote the game and the pay will be good. You may also be invited by other clubs. Do not answer today. Think about it. You can talk with your parents.”
For a moment Tom’s face brightened. What a nice way to earn money! Playing her favorite game. To be paid for enjoying something which she would have done for free! She knew she would earn lots of money. But then she remembered her resolution.
“I am sorry. But I cannot. I am going to be a missionary and if I join the club, I will not be able to do missionary work.”
“But you cannot let your talent go waste.”
“It will not. I will be able to teach the children. Maybe you can come and visit us sometimes. The children will be thrilled.”
Both Mr. Willis and Janet tried to persuade Tom. But she was firm.
In the end they both accepted defeat and promised to help Tom in whatever way they could.
So it was a tired but happy school that went to bed that day.
Next day was the last day of school. All would be departing for 4 weeks holidays.
“It was a nice term. Not much excitement. All straightforward and simple. I loved the theme for the Sale. But it would not be appreciated every year” said Bride to Tom as they were packing.
“I know” said Tom grinning “But we will not be here for the next Sale. We will be in Welsen.”
“You are coming?” shrieked Bride
“Yes. Bess Herbert’s father offered a better post to my father and so now he can afford to send me. I had a letter from him yesterday. But I forgot it in excitement of the match.”
“Now why are you shouting Bride” asked the other Prefects who had come to see why Bride was screaming.
“Tom is going with us in Welsen.”
Tom suddenly dived in the cupboard and blinked her eyes. For second time in her life was Tom close to tears. Her friends enthusiastic reception of the news made her aware how close she was to all.
“Oh folks isn’t life glorious!!” said Bride in Tom style. And they all collapsed with laughter.
The End.

Foot note.
The question of the Best Head girl was not solved because the most of the girls voted for Tom some for Peggy and few votes were for Jo. So the Mistresses decided not to expose the results but announced that all the Head girls were good each in her own way and of course they were chosen because they were good.
