Hmm... all I did was dance in the rain to Status Quo on my parents' decking, don't know why I was just inspired to do so and Clara trundled along and bit my toes. So here's the results. Thanks to Ally for betaing and pointint me in the direction of the bit from Exile as it hadn't even crossed my mind.

“Joey’s heart and mind were too full for speaking, for through this travel-stained relic she seemed to see the Sonnalpe with its magic carpet of flowers, snow-clad mountains pink and purple in the glow of the evening sun, and the Tiern See alive with dancing shadows. Her thoughts became audible: ‘Olim meminisse juvabit,’ she quoted.” (The Chalet School in Exile)

I don’t mind the rain in the summer, there’s something more to summer rain than there is to winter rain. It calls to me, taking me back to those long days of growing up beside the Tiern See. Winter rain makes me want to crawl indoors, hiding safely underneath a cosy blanket with all the doors and curtains shut against the dark and empty silence of outdoors. Summer rain brings hope with the bird song that accompanies it as it falls soft and warm on my upturned face, my eyes scanning the clouds for a break hoping that the sun will come again soon. It fills me with an irrepressible urge to dance, to forget the cares of the world, to forget that I am now grown up, a wife and mother with responsibility. For just those few moments that the summer rain falls soft on the world I am that young girl beside the Tiern See again. I run outside through the gentle raindrops that wash away the troubles and cares that I carry on my shoulders as I dance to myself. I don’t care if anyone sees me now for I am not here, I am lost somewhere back in the past amongst a thousand happy memories of my beloved Tiern See and nobody can touch those memories that I guard close to my heart.

Beneath the gentle grey clouds and the soft rain I remember the simple things. I am the girl running along the lakeside, arms full of flowers to meet my sister. I am the girl swimming in the shimmering blue waters of the Tiern See, splashing, carefree without a worry to my name. I am the girl scrambling up the mountainside, picnic basket tucked across my arm full of eager anticipation of a glorious day beneath the summer sun. I am the girl staring mournfully from the chalet window on a rainy day wanting to run outside and dance in the rain to wash away all the cares and worries of the world.

I sing to myself as I dance in the rain, savouring that feeling of freedom with no one to call me back indoors, worrying unnecessarily that giving into a whim will make me ill. My clothes are now wet and the ground is so soft beneath my bare feet and I try to hold on to this moment where for once it is me making the decisions. The fall of rain is a little easier now as a break in the cloud begins to pass over us. The world looks so much more hopeful in the immediate aftermath of the falling summer rain, washed clean and new, ready to face whatever is going to be thrown at it. I run my fingers through the flowers, catching their delicious scents on my fingers as a shiver runs down my spine.

From the house the sound of Anna singing to herself in the kitchen drifts out to me and the merry laugh of the children is caught on the wind from the open window.

“Mamma! Whatever are you doing?!”

A voice calls out to me from an open window and I stop my dancing suddenly brought back to earth with a bump. I laugh a little to myself, holding out my hand to try and catch the last raindrops.

That evening I sit lost in darning Jack’s socks, my thoughts hundreds of miles away beside the Tiern See. Plas Gwyn is my home now but my heart will always belong to the Tiern See.

~Evening brings the memories I can’t forget~ (Don McLean, Empty Chairs)
