This is my first drabble so... here goes!

Dear Diary,
I arrived in Austrian Tyrol today, at the Tiernsee. I am to start at a new boarding school here. The school has been started by a friend of Cousin Elise, which is why I had to come. I didn't want to leave my friends Aurelie and Marie in France, or my dear mother! I didn't object or be difficult on the subject though. I love Mother and didn't want to trouble her.

The lake here is so blue, the mountains so magnificent and everything is so beautiful that they all seem to be mocking my sorrows. That is why I have turned to you, diary, as I know you will be the only one who will listen.

Tomorrow Cousin Elise and someone called Dick Bettany are arriving. I hope he doesn't judge me as a quiet, shy girl just like everyone else.

Simone

Dear Diary,
Cousin Elise and Dick Bettany arrived just after breakfast this morning. They had no luggage with them, as Cousin Elise had sent it all up from Innsbruck by rail. They were busy arranging the furniture so I tried to help them. However, Cousin Elise told me to go and talk to some girls by the lake- try and improve my German- which made Mr Bettany think I was shy, as everyone does! I try so hard to be friendly and outgoing but I am always in the wrong place at the wrong time. I couldn't even talk to the girls by the lake because they got on the steamer. Once again, Cousin Elise passed it off as timidity.

I wish Mother were here. She is the opposite of me- outgoing, practical, creative, sometimes dreamy... sometimes a bit bossy as well! My cousin Renee is a little like her. Renee would like here, and she would make friends a lot quicker than me I'm sure!

I heard Cousin Elise saying that Mrs Bettany, (Dick's twin,) Jo Bettany,( her younger sister and a pupil for the school,) and another pupil called Grizel Cochrane should be arrivng in the next two days or so. I hope to find a good friend, someone like Mother, who will teach me to make conversation more easily and seem more confident. Someone who doesn't just see me as a shadow in the corner.

Simone

Dear Diary

Mrs Bettany, Jo Bettany and Grizel Cochrane arrived here in the Tiernsee last night, but I did not see them for it was late and I was already in bed. I was not asleep though, so I heard them exclaiming over the chalet and Cousin Elise's warm welcome. I could hear that Jo and Grizel are already good friends, and I knew from that moment that they would not bother with me. You have to understand that, when you are quiet like me, nobody notices you or wants to be with you unless they need a friend. Ashamed as I am to admit it, I cried when I heard them. I don't know why but I really felt that one of them was going to be the friend for me. The one who would encourage me to be more outspoken, who would tell stories of theirs, but listen to mine as well, would introduce me to others and, well, would like me for who I am.

That's not going to happen now. I will be alone. They will think I am shy and useless. Nothing will change- that's the story of my life.

You may think I'm judging them too early because I haven't even seen them yet. But I know. Even though I'm not that shy, I come across like that. No one wants a friend which they don't even know is there.

I must go now, Cousin Elise is calling me for breakfast- oh I mean Frühstück! I will write again tonight.

Simone

The dream of all of us - to be liked for who we are. Poor Simone - she was too frightened to be who she really was just then. That would come later.

Sorry about the slight delay in posting- just havn't found the time!

Dear Diary,

I'm going to have to take back most of what I have said about Jo Bettany; talk about judging people before you know them! To be fair, she was not overly friendly with me, just polite, but she has all the qualities that I want in a friend. She seems friendly, interesting, intelligent and, best of all, she reminds me strongly of Mother. I only hope that she likes me as much as I do her.

Her friend Grizel, however, is exactly as I thought she would be. Extremely pretty, it is plainly clear that she wants all of Jo's affections for herself. Every time I began a conversation with Jo about myself, or my country, she found some way of linking it to her own self and her experiences with Jo.

All in all, I really want to be good friends with Joey Bettany but I feel that Grizel will stand in my way. Maybe things will be easier when term begins because there will be other girls to take Grizel's attentions. Although, Jo may prefer them to me... There is nothing I can do but wait.

Simone

Poor Simone

I know I'd have hated to be in her position - shunted off to a school so far away, knowing it was my only chance of a good education, so I couldn't leave if I wasn't happy.

#42:  Author: Le Petite EmLocation: Cheltenham PostPosted: Fri Nov 04, 2005 6:58 pm

Ooops it has been AGES since my last post- I suddenly seem to have loads of coursework etc. Will try to a bit more regular from now on (at least until I get more coursework!) Plus I have lost my copy of School at the Chalet so this post might be a bit inaccurate.

Dear Diary,

I can't sleep. Term starts tomorrow- I'm so nervous. What if none of the other girls even like me, let alone want to be my friend? Joey will make friends with them all because she is open and talkative, and they will all like Grizel, even though she can be very mean, because she is pretty and amusing. Why would anyone talk to to me when they can be with them? I'm pale, plain, quiet and just don't fit in. The other girls including me is out of the question- it will never happen.

Joey is still be being friendly to me, but I think that she has decided that I'm boring. I do sometimes refuse her invitations to and walk, but that is because Grizel is there. Grizel definitely thinks I'm timid, shy and boring- she says so to my face when there's nobody to hear.

I am beginning to feel more and more homesick. Life here is so different to life in France. I'm not sure that I like it. I wish Mother could be here.

I must try and sleep now as it's almost 10 o'clock. If I'm tired tomorrow I will be even quieter!

Simone

Dear Diary,

My first day is over- I really feel like a proper school girl now! Homesick as I am, I enjoyed Madame's way of teaching and I think I will do quite well at this school.

We began our day at around 9:30. Looking from the window at this time, Joey saw a group of six girls, instead of the four expected, walking merrily down the path toward the chalet. That was the first shock!

They are all very polite, local girls whose ages range from 16, that's Gisela, to nine. Little Maria was the second shock!

We all settled into class quickly and did not get to chat straight away. However, I was already positive at this point. Although Joey was making quick friends with them all, she always tried to include me. Plus, Freida Mensch is just as quitely spoken as I, so I shouldn't feel alone.

During needlework, however, Joey and Grizel have a common hate of the subject. I do not know what Grizel said to Joey during this time, but Joey did not include me as much afterwards, and Grizel kept giving me smug little smiles during the rest of needlework. They talked vigourously of English schooling and compared it with other countries. I tried to tell them about the long hours and strange gym lessons at my school in France, but Grizel shouted me down with "But our schools aren't deficient in education!" Why did she do that? She was looking straight at me as I began to speak...

When all the other girls walked home togther, accompanied by Joey and Grizel, I went off by myself. I just couldn't face walking back with just Joey and Grizel; the latter always talks of English friends that I do not know. I went on a promenade to the pine woods, where I found a small hollow full of leaves and needles.

That's where I am sitting now, thinking of home and wishing I was there. I am so lonely. I haven't a true friend in this country. How do I go on?

Simone

Poor Simone, Joey wasn't being especially considerate of her friend's feelings was she?

As for Grizel, with her background I suppose it was understandable, but that was a nasty thing to do.

Dear Diary

Sorry that I have not written for five days now, but the school has been so busy that it is all I can do to stay awake in prep, let along write to you! I'm glad that my English was fairly fluent before I came to the Chalet School, for we have to be triligual and I hardly know a word of German. I have to be specially coached with Grizel.

The school is growing so quickly- in fact there are now seventeen of us! I do not like it as I prefer a much smaller school where people know each other better. I have made quite good friends with Maria and Frieda so far, but the rest have little time for me. Joey is making lots of friends and, although she is just as friendly with me as with Bernhilda and Gisels, I wish we had something different.

I wish I could put what I feel in words. I just can't. With these new girls, Margia and Amy, coming, I fear that Jo will have even less time for me.

I going to tell her that. I going to tell her my true feelings. Then she might even have more respect for me and think I can speak up when I really need to. Yes, I'm going to tell her and I'm going to tell right now.

Simone

Dear Diary,

It took ages for me to talk to Joey. I didn't do it yesterday. I kept thinking about what Mother would say- and that made me upset. When I finally plucked up the courage to talk to Jo it was breakfast today.

I didn't mean to look upset as I sat down next to Joey, but I must have done, for she asked me "why don't you chirk up a bit?" This made me so happy to know that she cared for my feelings. I was ready to tell her everything- how homesick I was, I was not really shy and how much I wished to be great friends with her.

But Grizel came running in at that very moment, and Cousin Elise followed. As Grizel sat down on the other side of Jo, I knew that I couldn't say anything in front of Grizel would laugh and scorn as usual. Similarly, Mademoiselle would tell Mother, who would worry. I love Mother and she shouldn't have to worry about me.

I love you, Mother, and I need you now. What do I do now? Help me. There's nowhere here to be alone to sort your head out. Where do I go?

Simone

Dear Diary,

So much has happened in such a short space of time. I hardly know how to write it all down!

After writing to you last, I felt that I just had to get away somewhere- to be on my own. I found a small hidey hole in the pines, filled with leaves. I sat there for I don't know how long, crying and thinking of home. I must have been very wrapped up in my sorrow, for I didn't hear Joey literally falling into my den.

She had come looking for me, and she was genuinely concerned about me! I poured out all of my troubles to her- how I miss my country and that I want to be her amie intime. Once I started I just didn't stop until everything was out in the open. Joey said that she would do anything for me, and she agreed to be good friends with me.

I didn't tell her everything about Grizel, as it would just spoil the moment. I don't really want to spoil Jo's friendship with anyone else. She can have all the friends she wants- but I only hope I remain special to her.

I have promised Jo not to go rushing off anymore in case of a storm. It feels so wonderful to have a friend to make promises to again! We walked back to the school together. Grizel's face was a picture when she saw us!

I have forgiven Grizel for everything she said to me- it seems so irrelevant now I know that her words haven't affected Joey.

Must go now, we have all been invited to the Mensches this afternoon and I look like a scarecrow. Maybe I can make friends with Frieda this evening, as well?

Simone

I had such a wonderful afternoon with the Mensches today- I was so happy that most of the time I couldn't speak! (This really hasn't helped people to change their opinions of me, or me to make friends with Frieda but, for once, I am not bothered.)

We all sat outside Gausthaus, ate fantastic cakes and drank tea. I almost laughed out loud at Joey's face when kind Frau Mensch asked if she would like her tea with rum or lemon, and Freida's face was a picture when she was drinking her tea with milk! I don't think anyone else noticed, but she almost spat it right out.

Herr Mensch told us stories of his childhood, and then took us for a walk along to Buchau. He named the mountains for us as we stood near the lakeside. One named Mondschienspitze sounds particularly charming- a clear view of Briesau, and the sparkling lake, flowers growing wild and free all over the place and butterflies so tame that they would land on your hand and rest there. Joey said she would love to write a story about it, but I think it would make a much better poem. I said so, but Grizel laughed that Joey knew better than me. I suppose Joey does.

I am a little worried that Grizel is going to do something rash. I don't know what, but she has become restless lately, and her face when Herr Mensch was talking about the Tiernjoch! Joey has realised too, for I saw her look. I may speak to her about it if I notice anything else.

A quick note about the school- there is another new day pupil coming. She is English, called Juliet Carrick and is quite close in age to Grizel. We saw on our way back to the Chalet today, and Grizel seems quite taken with her. I hope they become good friends so that Grizel has less time for Joey- then I shall see less of Grizel and she will have less chance of speaking to me.

It is getting late, and I still have to write to Mother. How happy she will be to receive a letter that it is bringing news of the best day in the Tyrol so far.

Simone

Pleased that Simone is happier - but she really is almost bullied by Grizel isn't she?

Thank you.

Dear Diary,

I fear that Grizel is going to cause trouble for the school soon. Ever since Juliet arrived she has been giving me snide little comments about how I obey all the prefects and am such a good little girl. I give her no reply as she is not worth the trouble, however Juniors such as Amy Stevens don't know how to cope with it. You see, she has moved on to them as well, taking advantage of her age with them. She has become, how do you say, too big for her shoes is it?

Jo and I are such good friends now, for, although I still worry that she finds other more exciting than me, I know that she accepts me as someone she can some one she can come to with her problems. She hasn't said anything to me about Grizel's behaviour though, even though I know Joey has noticed it. Maybe she is too loyal to her friend to want to recognise such actions? But then Grizel has barely talked to her since Juliet arrived.

Well, apart from the matter of Grizel and Juliet, nothing much has happened over the last few days so I will retire to bed now. In fact, as long as life at the school stays as it is now, for a while at least, and there is no new pupils for a while, I will be very happy!

Simone

Joey's in an awkward position, being friends with both Grizel and Simone, isn't she? Although, of course, as we know, everyone wants to be friends with Joey apart from "bad" characters like Thekla!! Thanks Emma.

Thanks, Em. I'm glad Simone and Joey are getting on well. I'm sorry Grizel is making snide comments to Simone, though.

Dear Diary,

What is that saying? Every silver lining has a cloud? That's not quite it but I've found a cloud now, I'm sure of it!

We have been told that there are four more pupils for the school next year- an Italian girl, the American, Evadne Lannis, and two English girls. I was not worried that Joey would forget me when they came because I know her well enough now to know that she is loyal and true. I was not worried about next term and even chatted to Joey about it when it was just the two of us, walking on the lake path.

The cloud is Grizel. Ever since she was in grevious trouble with Madame, she has left me alone, but, this morning, she caught me inside the practice room. "Joey's going to forget about you, Simone, when the new girls come," she said first, and then pushed me back onto the chair. She told how Joey thought I was pathetic and weak but was too kind to say so. She said that I should tell Joey 'where to go', but I don't know what she meant by that. I tried to stand up to her, but she pulled my hair until tears sprang to my eyes and said, finally, "You don't fit in with Joey and I so leave us alone!"

I need to talk to Jo, but I can't get her on her own. We were talking with Amy and Margia about the new girls and, when they left us, I tried to tell Jo about Grizel. She saw me looking at her, and I know that she could tell what I was going to say but... Oh I don't know, she just ignored me. She must feel so awkward, stuck in between Grizel and I but I wish she'd listen to me for she's the only one who can possibly help me.

I have to stop writing now, for lessons are beginning. I can't remember anything- Grizel's words are just going round and round in my head.

Simone

Isn't Grizel being horrible? It's like when Joey gets engaged and, even though Grizel's a supposedly mature adult by then, she makes a nasty comment about how Joey won't have time for Robin now that she's got a fiancé.

Thanks, Em. I'm glad Simone is feeling more confident but I'm sorry that Joey isn't helping her in her battle against Grizel.

Sorry to spree a bit but this is the final post and I feel that this has taken me a long time! I do have another short drabble for you all though!

Dear Diary

I’m not thinking straight now, and still all I can hear in my head are Grizel Cochrane’s words. What if she's right, that Joey will forget about me? Maybe Jo won't say anything because she agrees with Grizel but doesn't want to say so? If I changed, maybe everything would be different?

"Joey's going to forget about you Simone." No! Not if I can help it. I'm going to change- do something to show Jo that I am like her and any other girl. However, most of all I am going to show Grizel that nothing, but nothing, will get in the way of mine and Jo's friendship.

I know what I think I can do, but I can’t write it. It will seem too, too real.

It's sad it has come to this. I'm scared and I know that I'm on my own now. Completely on my own and it's all Grizel's fault. I hate her for this, but I mustn’t let it show, for Joey’s sake as much as my own.

Now, if I’m going to do this I must pull myself together and do it now. I won't need you anymore, Diary. I need to face the world alone. Good bye, for the last time.

Simone

That was the end of the diary.
A single teardrop splashed onto the page.
“That must have been the day that she cut her hair,” whispered Grizel, slowly closing the battered book that she had found buried in the pine woods.
The head girl stood up and looked back at the school, eyes glistening.
“I’m so sorry Simone,” she breathed, “Please, forgive me.”

THE END

Thank you Em. I'm really glad Grizel found the diary, hopefully it's shown her what a horrible person she was.

Just read all of this, and it was lovely. Simone's much less of a wet than she is in the books! The ending's really moving. Thanks, Em.
