This was inspired by a recent discussion in Anything Else, I hope the people in the discussion don't mind me writing this. Thanks especially to KB who posted the rhyme. It is the first time I have written a one-part drabble so I hope this is ok.

Joey Maynard heard someone knocking on her study door. She had been engrossed in writing the first chapter of her latest book for most of the afternoon, and it had just got to the point where it stopped writing itself. She would need to think things through a bit before writing more, a distraction would certainly be welcome!

“Come in,” she called

“Hello Len... and... well, everyone.” Joey was rather surprised at seeing so many people attempting to fit their way into her study! She looked at who was there, Len, Connie and Margot, then Felicity, Cecil and Phil, then Daisy Rosonom and her young daughter Mary. Joey realised that she had been visited by all of the women and girls currently in the house, with the exception of Anna and Rösli, the domestic staff.

“To what do I owe this honour?” Joey asked

“Well, you see Cecil had a question, she has spent all afternoon finding each of us to ask. But we didn't know the answer, and now we are intrigued too!” Len responded.

“Well fire away young Cecil, I don't promise to know the answer mind, but I will do my best.”

“Mamma, you know that I have been sheepdog to Julia, the new girl?” Cecil began

“Of course,” Joey replied trying to hide her smile, Cecil had been so proud to be chosen for the first time to play 'sheepdog' to a new girl, “I am sure you have done a very good job darling”

“Well, I was telling Julia the nicknames of the different mistresses. You know, how Miss Wilson is Bill, and Miss Andrews is Andy, and Mr Denny is Plato. Then Julia asked why Miss Denny is Sally-Goes-Round-the Moon, and well, I didn't know. And Len doesn't know either, or Connie, or Margot, or anyone else. All we know is that it was you who started it off.”

“Ah, I see. Well I am afraid it isn't all that exciting really. Miss Denny's first name is Sarah, which is often abbreviated to Sally. You know the nursery rhyme 'Sally Goes Round the Sun' I imagine?” Joey asked

It turned out that not one of them had heard it before.

“I suppose it must have gone out of fashion. Well, anyway, it goes like this,

Sally go round the sun.
Sally go round the moon.
Sally go round the chimney pots
On a Saturday afternoon.

When the school was in the Tyrol, it was in a big book of illustrated nursery rhymes we had, I think it belonged to Amy Stevens. The illustration on the page had a drawing of 'Sally' going around the moon, the 'Sally' looked a little like Miss Denny you see, and with the Sarah/Sally bit, I thought it would be an appropriate name. I suppose it must have stuck.” Joey replied.
