"I do love Christmas!"
Margot Maynard grinned as she watched the last of the coaches take the Chalet School's pupils home for the Christmas holidays. She shut the door with a bang which earned her a call from Miss Annersley who rebuked her for it.
"Really, Margot, you are a Prefect!" She said with a chuckle, and Margot knew that she was forgiven.
She grinned at her Head Mistress. "There was no one to see me doing it, Auntie Hilda!" She said with a merry laugh and fixed her coat to her tightly. "Now I must brave the cold. I don't like the look of that sky."
Hilda peered out of the window. There were some very suspicious yellow clouds creeping over hear, and they both knew they were in for a blizzard before very long. "You had better scoot home, Margot. Here come Len and Con. Have you got everything?" She asked of the two big girls who made up a triplet with the younger girl.
Dark-haired Con nodded. "Yes, thankyou Auntie Hilda," she replied, using the title bestowed upon them when they were alone. "Hope you have a lovely Christmas and do come to ours like you said!"
"What English!" Laughed the Head of the Chalet School. "Of course I will be coming, tomorrow all being well, we mistresses still have one or two ends to tie up. Now scoot, you three, before that snow comes."
The triplets said their goodbyes, and braced themselves to meet the cold air. There was already snow on the ground; several snow drifts were very menacing, andCon shivered, wondering what it would have been like back in the times of yesteryear. A story was forming in her mind, one she could loosely base on 'A Christmas Carol' or so she thought. But like all writers, Con knew that stories tended to take .
their own directions whenever possible, if allowed to take flight.
Len noticed the look upon her face, and knew that her triplet was going off into her fantasy world. Who knew where it would one day land her?
*
A few days before Christmas, and they were singing carols in the salon. The younger children were putting up the decorations, and Len was moved to ask her sister: "So are you going to tell us the story that you have been working on these holidays?" She asked.
Con reddened. "You have never asked about my writing before. If you must know, I am trying to work out a story based upon 'A Christmas Carol' - but it is not working out as I had planned."
"Then give it a rest for a while, and lets help the children with that holly," Len suggested.
Con sighed. That was easier said than done. She knew that the dream would come again that night...

Con remained quiet for the rest of the evening, and her family knew that she would be in the throws of some great work. They were used to her, and for the majority they left her alone, much to her relief. She curled up in a comfy chair in the salon, watching the clock anxiously, knowing that bed time was creeping up slowly, and she was extremely anxious. That dream was all very well, but how much truth was in it?She was being visited by someone, and they were showing her flahes of her past, and she was not sure if she liked it.
Presently, Joey bounded up saying that she was heading to bed, and suggested that everyone should have an early night, for it would be a long day on the morrow, what with it being Christmas eve. With a sigh, Con Maynard knew she had no choice but to face the nightmare.
"Night Con, Margot!" Len called gaily to her sisters.
"Night!" Margot replied with a grin for her triplets. "Con?"
"Night, sorry!I was miles away," she said guiltily.
"I'd say you were!Try not to keep awake if you can help it." And the girls parted ways to there own bedrooms.
After washing and getting ready for bed, Con said her prayers, and then her mother appeared to bid her good night, and blessed their guardian angels. Though she still continued thie tradition, and Con felt herself rather old for it, she felt comforted it by it tonight, and snuggled down under her covers where she soon sped into a deep sleep.

Ding, dong! The bells rang. Con, rudely awakened out of her sweet sleep, rubbed at her eyes, to discover a bright light shinning in her room. She gasped. This was a new turn on her dream. Was it her Guardian Angel come to guide her through the rest of her night? But Con knew it was wishful thinking, especially when the light grew larger and started to dance by her door. The door opened slowly, by itself adn Con shivered. She bounded out of bed, grabbed her dressing gown, and padded along the corridor, and down the stairs. The light had shrunk to a pin point, and was hovering by the front door, waiting for her to come out into the night. Con pulled on socks and her walking boots, and then her coat, scarf and glooves, for she had no mind to freeze to death, what ever the light wanted. Again, once she was ready, the door opened itself, and, a raging blizzard met her.
"Great, really great," she muttered. But Con knew she had no choice but to follow the light.

The blizzard was raging, but the light bobbed in the distance, and was very bright. Con Maynard trudged in the snow, already very deep, and went straight down the garden, and the gate which had opened by itsefld. Con's rational thought was that it was the howling wind that had opened the gate, but if she chose to think further, she knew that it was not, but something supernatural. She shivered. Not because she was cold, she was far from it; for though by rights she should have been, she was warm as toast. Con tried not to dwell on it and strove forwards as best as she could under the circumstances.
After a while the light paused; and Con realised that she was at the school. Greatly wondering, she was thrilled to see that the pad locks on the main gates had been taken off, and was able to go through the grounds with ease.
The light turned a corner, and very soon they were at the chapels which had been built for the Coming of Age celebrations. Con was unsusre what to expect, when suddenly, the light grew bigger and formed into a human form.
It was white, shimmering from head to foot, no wings, as Con was dissappointed to discover, she tried not to show it.
"Who are you?" She breathed.
"Your Guardian Angel," the angel whispered, as glorious wings did indeed appear from behind the figure. "I am here to take you through time itself. Will you come?" It held out a hand.
Con was bewildered. This was no dream. It was real.

Con nervously took the offered hand, and suddenly with a whoosh! They were flying through the air, and yet she still did not feel the cold. She wondered if the angel was controlling the tempreture; but Con shook herself. That was going on the verge of madness, something she did not wish to be accused of by her loving family and friends, if she ever got back to tell them what had happened. Thing was, would they believe her?
"I would not tell them if I were you," the angel said in a silvery voice.
Con flushed. "You can read my mind!" It was not a question.
The angel smiled. "Of course, we're connected. I watch over you. But you cannot read mine, though."
Thank the stars! Con shot to his mind. The angel chuckled, and very soon they were slowing down, to another snowy scene, where some girls were about to go onto the lake before them to ice skate. Con recognised one as being her mother, albiet a much younger Joey; and Con's eyes widened as she saw the scene unfold of other girls shouting, and her mother going to the rescue.
"She'll fall in too!" Con shrieked, hoping that her mother would hear her.
"She won't hear you, Con. This has happened, I just wanted you to wake up and remember that stories are not real however much you like to dream them."
Con shuddered. Her angel was telling some home truths, but she was not so sure if she liked to hear them or not....

Con turned away from the scene unfolding before her very eyes. She had seen enough to know that this was the very same time when her mother had fell into the ice with a girl from another school. She glared at her angel.
"I know I don't look very pretty pulling a face at you, but I have seen enough, and I do not think it's very sporting of you to show me this!" Con declared with a vim that even shocked her. Her sisters would have been proud.
The angel shook it's head, and tinkled as it did so. Con could not make up her mind if it was a he or a her - there was nothing really to distinguish the features which glittered every time the angel moved, and Con, though annoyed by what s/he was showing her, she could not help but marvel at them.
"Oh I think not, Con, " the angel said, and they took off again with such a speed that it took Con all her time to remember to breath. There was another whirl of colour, and eventually they came to a stop.
"You can open your eyes now," it added gently.
She did so, slowly, and focused to find herself back in a time she knew from the descriptions of her mother's evacuation from Guernsey. Con could not believe that she was back on the island where she had been born. They had always said that they would like to see it again, but not quite like this. It was beyond imagining to say the least. The Prefect was not so sure if this was going to be good or not; for she knew the story of how her mother had gotten accross the chanel. Surely the angel did not mean for her to witness that too? Con shuddered, not certain of anything anymore, and wished hard that this was a dream and she would wake up safe in her own bed.
No such luck. The angel was moving again, this time to the landing and out to sea to see the said sea battle taking place. Con really did not want to see anymore. This was taking it too far indeed.Maybe the angel should just show her everything that her mother had ever been through in her youth?
"If that is what you wish, Con, it can be granted."
Con gritted her teeth as a plane droned on before them. "I think you are doing that already,"she replied dryly.

The angel took one look at Con's face and realised that the girl had probably seen enough to begin to realise that she needed to wake up and live in the real world, and not in those stories which weaved in and around her mind, which had some very funny consequnces in the past when Con ought to have been paying attention in class, especially.
"What pray the lions, Con?" The angel asked at length.
Con blushed. It was not right to bring up one's past sins, and this creature certainaly should know better than to do so! Though she had to admitt that her triplets did sometimes rub it in from time to time when she needed reminding.
"That is not fair!" She protested. "You should not say such things!I learned my lesson, and am learning it now. You are showing me these things to remind me that there are things going on in the real world - heaven knows I am reminded time and again that I should not let a story interfere with everything else. Like when I was given the editorship of the Chaletian. I am sure I have improved since then.I am a Prefect, and they would not let me be one if they did not think I was responsible," Con added.
The angel chuckled. "Lesson well learned, as you said. I am just hoping to make sure it will last once you leave school and go off on adventures. Now, I think we will go on one last adventure, and show you something nice. You know, Con, you might just get a story out of this!"
Con had the grace to look sheepish. "But I thought that the whole point of this was to be aware of things going on!That is what you have been lecturing me all along."
"Very true, but you are allowed to write, just not in the times you are supposed to be doing other things. Now Christmas is around the corner, so how about a Christmas to remember?"
Greatly daring, and wondering what her Guardian angel had in store for her, Con secretly hoped that this really was the last time she would have to travel thus, and that she would find herself at home back with her family.

Post subject:  Re: The Night Before Christmas - for Cestina

Con knew that the angel was doing this for her own good, but it still did not help matters as they flew along the space between time. It was a blur of colour and music suddenly reached her ears, heavenly church music, an organ playing and children and adults alike, singing.
They were singing Christmas carols, and snow was gently falling all around in great, big flakes, which a child on the stree with a parent tried to catch with his mittened hands. Con smiled inwardly. She loved singing carols, and the music was sweet. There was something innocent about it, and majestic all at the same time.
The angel came to a stop, and Con realised that they were in Wales, notably where her parents lived once they had evacuated from Guernsey. Clearly it was war time, for the child carried the standard gas mask, for even though they were in a small town, there was still the risk of air raids so far out here; especailly when Cardiff was so close to them.
Con wondered if she would bump into her mother and herself as a baby. That really would be very strange indeed - she had not seen herself at the landing stage of Guernsey, but then the babies had been huddled safe in a huge basket.
"Avoid being seen," the angel advised at length. "But you are visible for now. Use this time wisely."
She stared at the angel. What on earth did it mean? It was all very puzzeling, but Con guessed that she would find out very soon and was to think it over for her next story, which she would not neglect anything else for.

Sadly this santa has to work shifts!Apologies for the delay :D

The angel left Con to her own devises, and she grew a little concerned when it vanished, though she could 'hear' the voice of her Guardian in her head, and though it was unnerving, it was a comfort also.
She wandered over to the church, where the singing had stopped, and a siren wailed out over head. Con very nearly panicked. This could only mean one thing, and she had no idea where to go and what to do - apart from the stories of what her mother had told her from her own experiences of war time England and Wales. But this was very different and on Christmas Eve too! Con thought about the curage the English people must have had through the war years, and that they had pulled together amazingly.
Con herself had only been a small child during these years, so she remembered nothing about the war - it was a very vague memory of long ago, and she thought that if she came across her mother now, Joey would not guess who she was - she hoped, anyway.
People came out of the church. They were very calm, and quiet, as lights dimned, and the bells stopped ringing. A hush came across the land, and Con pulled her hood over her head, and recognised her mother with three young children around her, looking fairly excited. She recognised herself and her triplet sisters as toddlers from pictures, and Robin Humphries brought up the rear.
Con plucked up the curage to go and speak to them, for she did not wish to be caught out if there was a raid - chosing to ignore what the angel had said to her.
"Please, where can I find the nearest shelter?" She asked Robin.
Robin grinned in a friendly fashion. "Do come with us, we have plenty of room in ours - that is fine, is it not Joey Dearest?" Robin added to Joey whom was busy with the children.
Joey laughed gaily. "Yes, plenty! I would not turn any one away on a night like this," the lady said.
Con smiled under her scarf, she hoped that they would not inisist on her taking her scarf off and coat once in the shelter, for she would give herself away. But this was too much to miss, and she longed to discover how they had coped during the war...

It was very strange, Con thought as she followed the others to Plas Gwyn. The Anderson shelter was at the bottom of the garden, and they all managed to get in with room to spare, to quote Joey.
The triplets were put to bed, and soon went off to sleep; planes chugged over head, and Con breathed in, hoping that they would soon pass.
Joey had made tea, and had brought down a busciut tin. "Do have one, Miss - I am sorry, I have been rude and not introduced myself. I am Joey Maynard, and this is my sister Robin Humphries," she said with a smile.
"I am Constance Burnes," replied Con, knowing that if she used her own surname it was bound to raise eye brows.
"Same name as my second triplet. What brings you to these parts, on Christmas Eve?"
"Joey!Stop being rude! I am sorry, but my sister likes to put a finger in the pie. Though, I must admit, you chose a horrible night to come out on," Robin said, neatly butting in.
Con chuckled, and took down her scarf, making Robin stare at her. Who did she remind her of, she wondered? "No, do not worry. I do not mind. I am here to see some relatives, and I missed the last bus. My case went on ahead, by train a week ago," she hastily added, wishing to draw attention to herself. "Thankyou very much for this."
Joey smiled. "You are welcome, though I do believe I have met you somewhere before," she said.
Robin nodded. "Yes!I am glad you have noticed it too, I cannot put a finger on it, and yet, you are the image of someone I know - " then suddenly, crash! And the children were rudely awakened.
"Hush, My children, your Guardian Angels will protect and watch over you," Joey said softly, comforting them.
Con swallowed, remembering what her Guardian Angel had said to her when he had left her at the church. How on earth was she going to get out of this one, she thought to herself, as the other two cuddled the triplets.
"I am sorry," Joey murmered at length. "But could you take your name sake? Margot is going to scream herself into a fit, and Robin can harldy hold both."
Con held a breath. What else could she do but comply?

Post subject:  Re: The Night Before Christmas completed- for Cestina

For though it had felt very strange following her mother and Robin back to Plas Gywn, holding her smaller self in her arms actually felt so natural that it scared her somewhat. It was as though the younger Con was quite happy to be where she was, and fell asleep as soon as she was settled.
Con leaned back against the wall. Of course, the Angel had told her not to be seen by these people, but she was human at the end of the day, and surely her Guardian Angel would forgive her for being just a little bit curious?
She sighed. It was warm inside the Anderson shelter, and though the wind howled outside, Con found herself suddenly feeling very sleepy, that mug of tea which she had just had warmed her through, and she knew that if she fell asleep now, the next time she awoke, would not be to this. Taking in the scene before her of Joey rocking her youngest sister, singing her a carol, and Robin holding a now sleeping Len, Con knew that she could not keep her eyes open for very much longer...

*
"Well, Con," a voice said, startling her.
Con shook herself and found herself back in the school's chapel. It was a shock to the system, but she had known this would happen, and sweet music rang in her ears, and a bell chimed midnight. Christmas Day already.
"You have learnt an important lesson, I hope?" Her Guardian Angel said at length, unveiling her hood, to reveal a stunning look-a-like of Robin Humphries, that Con very nearly gasped.
"Yes, not to let my mind wander when important things are going on," she just about managed. "And that Christmas is about family."
"Very good. Now, I think it is time for you to get back to your home, for your family may miss you in the morning if they find that your bed is empty!"
The angel laughed gaily, and guided Con to the entrance of the chapel. Robin touched the snow, and dancing sparkly twinkling lights lit up a path to Con's home. Con stared, it was beautiful, and the storm had died down, to reveal a full Christmas moon. With any luck they might be able to go skiing on the day itself!
Con turned back to look at the angel, but the angel had gone, and she made her way back to her safe and warm home - and bed.
*
"Con!" Len shook her sister. "Oh goodness, why won't she wake up? It's Christmas morning!"
Margot giggled. "Have you forgotton what Mother told us they used to do when they were at school?" Margot stroked a finger down Con's cheek, and that young lady awoke, startled.
"Where am I?" Con demanded.
"In bed, sleepy head!" Len laughed. "It's Christmas Day, and we have been up ages - did you not sleep last night?"
Con groaned, remembering what had taken place. "Yes, I think I must have been dreaming deeply. Hope you have not opened your stockings yet!" She added, bounding out of bed.
Margot grinned. "What do you take us for? We waited for you, of course!" She said and went to the foot of her own bed to make short work of the stocking she had left out the previous night.
Con did likewise. She put her hand in, and pulled out a wrapped present. Opening it, Con was delighted to find a black and white snap shot in a silver frame of her mother, Robin and her triplet sisters. Tears sprang to her eyes, as she realised that her two sisters had done this for her.
She looked at them. Len beamed back, Con did not have to say anything, for she knew.
"I'm glad you like it. We found the photo recently and thought you would like it from us as a keep sake," Len murmered.
Con nodded. "I love it, and thankyou very much. Happy Christmas, Len, Margot!" She said as she wiped her eyes.
"Happy Christmas!" The other two replied.
