My Dear Margaret,

I have to admit to being somewhat astonished to find that you have removed to Austria without any warning. What were you thinking of Margaret? And poor little Josephine, do you think this sudden decision is quite the best thing for her health my dear? Although I must admit your little holiday there a few years ago did her the world of good, will living there with all those foreign doctors be helpful? Now, if you were suddenly off to Switzerland we would understand that dear Josephine’s health was much worse than we had been led to believe.

On top of that first piece of astounding news came the further shock that you are starting a school. Dearest Margaret, you are definitely too young for such a serious undertaking. If you must teach, and are so worried about Josephine’s health, why not get a position at a sanatorium in the Swiss Alps which is established and acceptable for a young woman in your position. My Dear, you certainly have not the gravitas, experience or age to gain the respect necessary for a headmistress. I am certain that Great Uncle William and young Richard do not approve.

I think it is criminal that you have sold your home. Where are you hoping to live once this venture is over? You know that my sisters and I have very little room, though I expect something will be arranged for you. I will have to think about that later. Believe me when I say we would all do our very best for you and little Josephine.

Finally, and I am reluctant to say it but fear I must, how much chance is there of you finding a nice young Englishman in the back of beyond place to which you have gone. You really must start considering these things. You are a very pretty girl and should be settling down soon.

All my best wishes go with you,
Your loving aunt,
Maggie

Dear Madge and Joey,

I know Aunt Maggie is writing (or has already written) to you but I wanted to say we do not all agree with her sentiments. I’m not sure she does actually but she takes her position of eldest living female relative very seriously- too seriously sometimes.

Congratulations on finding such a novel way to solve all your problems. You are a much braver person than I am. I admire your strength and can see no reason why you can’t make your school flourish- such a fun idea.

I hope Joey’s classes are going well and that she doesn’t have to miss so many days due to illness. Maybe she will finally get to grips with the dreaded mathematics.

Oh, and mentioning maths, that reminds me- did you ever meet Geoffrey’s friend Bob. He is some years older than you and has a gorgeous family home in the New Forest; he used to visit us regularly before he married. I think he met Geoff at school. Anyway, to get to the point, he has a younger sister who has recently finished training as a maths teacher and I wondered if you might be able to offer her a position. They used to spend every summer trekking round Europe so I know that languages won’t be an issue. I remember that, although you weren’t bad at maths, it was not your favourite subject- in fact I can remember the whole family having to try to get you to understand quadratics. Therefore you must surely need a good maths teacher. Molly is young, fun and friendly and I’m sure you’ll get on famously. Please give it some serious thought.

I must go, your cousins are calling me, and as they are now all taller than I its more than my life is worth to keep them waiting.

All the best
Aunt Josie

Hello Mollie,

Thanks for your letter. Hope you are well. There, that’s the formalities done.

Sorry that you feel a bit left out but you have only been there a few days and the other two have been friends for years apparently. Don’t worry, if the school expands at the rate you describe, there will soon be even newer staff and it’ll be their turn to feel left out. I’m sure you are such a fun person that you have all become pals already in the time it’s taken for these letters to travel.

Anyway, Old Girl, there is going to be a bit more distraction in a short while; I’ve just been offered a post at a new sanatorium that is opening soon somewhere near you. It is the brainchild of a Dr James Russell and from what I gathered at the interview he is interested in employing young, innovative doctors. So you can rely on me in a few months or so- authorities accepting- to come and give you some madcap days out.

So, chin up old thing, Jack to the rescue.

Love Jack

P.S As for young Joey’s lack of effort in your subjects, tell her sister. You’ll lose less respect doing it now than it showing up when they sit end of term tests.

Dear Grizel,

I hope that you are well, working hard and making the most of your opportunities.

Thank-you for your letter. From what you write, it does seem to be a beautiful place and I’m gratified that Miss Bettany’s institution fares well. You certainly appear to be getting plenty of fun and games but do not forget your practice. We miss your music very much.

Love from Daddy

Dear Grizel,
I held a little soiree last week, plenty of people came and I wore a wonderful, new black gown your father bought me in Plymouth. Most of the guests asked to be remembered to you but too many to mention individually here. Mrs Burnett said how much she missed your playing and a couple of others regretted your absence, so you see, you are a lucky girl to be able to play so well, so keep working hard at it.

Mrs Burnett and Mrs Dene have both intimated that their girls will be joining Miss Bettany’s school. You will enjoy that but don’t let it get in the way of your father’s wishes.
From your Step-mother.

P.S Please refrain from sending so many cards to the cook, it is not seemly in one of your station.

Thank-you for the comments. It does appear in the early chapter of School at that Grizel and Cook are not supposed to be friendly.

Ma chere Simone,
You seem to be having a wonderful time even though you have been given this chance to improve your education. In her letter, Cousin Therese was delighted with your continued hard work. I know you have been homesick but we are here, waiting for term to end so we can talk to you properly. Next term will not be so lonely as Renee will be with you. Renee reads all your letters over and over again and is very excited about her future school.

Papa has been working hard and unfortunately has had no spare time in which to write to you but he has said we can send you the enclosed pocket money as you are working so well.

There is a new concierge next door and we are hearing

Ah, Simone your letter has just arrived. How could you? I am not sure what Papa will say. What has got into you? As Therese declares it will be better for you in the hot weather we will keep it as it now is rather than let it grow again. Do not be concerned; Renee will be told nothing of your stupidity, we do not want her copying you. In a few years when you will want to wear it up you can grow it again- fortunately it grows quite quickly. Still, I am disappointed by your odd behaviour.

I must go now and fetch Renee from her friend Chantal. Do not worry, you are forgiven. We all look forward to your holidays.

Hello Mollie,

You have found yourself a little mystery haven’t you? If I know you, you bought all your usual acting skills to the fore. You always do. Do you remember when we were about ten, when the parlour maid was sent away, you wandered off looking totally innocent, completely without any curiosity at all, and I got a major scolding for asking questions. Then, as soon as I caught up with you, you became some sort of question machine. Later we both got well and truly caught ferreting around for further information. I assume you’re being a bit more circumspect this time.

So, if I read your letter right, you have an obnoxious brat who suddenly has completely changed and is to be a sort of student teacher. But you don’t believe it. Well, my little Sherlock, I’m afraid you’ll have to do your own sneaking about this time. I’m not there and am way too honourable. Suggest you wait till next term and see what happens. You are right though, from what you say about Juliet it does seem a little odd.

Work goes fine. Dr Russell informs me that the work on his san is well on its way. I’ve checked on the maps and its not far from you. Perhaps I’ll find you some nice young doctor of your own or have you still got your claws into poor MacKenzie.

Jack

My darling Grand-daughter,

Thank-you for your letter. Your day on the Mondsheinspitze sounds very exciting. It makes me very happy to hear that you have made so many new friends and that young Miss Bettany’s school is so splendid.

I was talking to Rita and Elizabeth at their mother last week and they were telling me how much they missed you on the cricket team this year. They still seem to have won most their matches but not by the large number of runs you all managed last season.

Now child, you really must try to send some better letters to your father. I know he is never seems effusive but he does love you very much and, I know, regrets some of the way he has behaved towards you and your step-mother. This is, in part, my fault as I indulged you too much while you lived with me. If you were to unbend a little, and send him more expansive and friendly letters than the note he showed me, then he might be able to reply in a different manner. He has always been a very reserved man and not fortunate in his choice of companions. Perhaps, if you will, you can help him express more than his duty. I know he loves you, although to you it appears otherwise, and wants the best for you.

I continue well, and I hope you keep healthy too, but am somewhat tired so please forgive the shortness of this letter. Please consider what I have written carefully.

This is sent with all my love, from your beloved Grannie.

I would have changed the title to say this was updated but I can't work out how!

Dear Joey,
I am vary happy that you are now so well. It is only a week until next term begins and I am happy to be seeing you then.

I have had very quiet holidays. Renee and I have been to the park most days and once I take her to L’Arc de Triomphe and tell her the story of you throwing flowers at the guard and almost getting arrested. Renee thought that very funny. Otherwise we have not done anything special. I spend one day a week with Cousin Therese, Renee comes too, to practise our English. She says we must not forget.

I do not expect a letter back from you as by the time this arrives it will be so close to the start of term. I do hope we will still be sleeping together as I would miss you horribly. Renee being younger will be in the new little chalet Cousin Therese tells us. I hope Renee will be happy.

Renee giggled when she saw my hair but now is asking to have hers cut too. She thinks school will be jolly but is worried that Grizelle may be nasty but I tell her Madame will not let that be so.

Please give the others my greetings and I will see you very soon.
Love from Simone

Thank-you for your kind comments. This letter is my attempt to answer a mystery.

Dear Rosalie,
Thank-you for the topping postcard. The Tiernsee looks great.
I could have killed Kitty for catching mumps a week before term started but I suppose she couldn’t help it. I was so looking forward to travelling with you. I’m even more annoyed now as the Parents have decided that I go back to the High for this yea because travelling in winter is ‘such a nuisance.’ So after half term its back to wearing the old navy rather than the spiffing new brown. Mummy is going to give my new school stuff to your mother as I’ll have grown out of it by next year.

Its shameifying to return to the High. Everyone will have chosen their partners and I’ll probably end up with Millis who is really dull.

Your letter just arrived and now I’m green with envy. Your food sounds absolutely luscious- although I’m not so sure about breakfast give me bacon and a cup of tea over bread rolls and coffee.

I like what you say about the sleeping arrangements. We didn’t expect that the beds would be curtained off did we? It will be nice to have a bit of private space.

The weather here has been gloomy in the extreme. Even though we’re just out of quarantine we still stay in. Rain, rain, rain. That means that we all end up arguing all the time. The new housemaid took it upon her self to have a go at us too but Mummy heard her and I think Clara has been dismissed. I’d rather do work myself than put up with that cow any more.

Please, please write back soon and tell me lots more about the school. I’m desperate to know.
Love Mary
