I look forward to finding out what school Tony went to because I don't remember from 'Three go to the Chalet School'. Before I read the book, I always used to think the 'three' were the triplets.

Hello it'smeeee!
Got fed up with wibbling about tomorrows observation from hell so thought I'd write! Then got stucked! Oh well enjoy even tho its short!! Very Happy

“Tony” he bellowed. “Where the devils name is he?” he muttered, stomping over the rocks which bordered the edge of the beach. Tony shivered in his hiding place and shrunk back into the cave to hide himself more efficiently. “Tony Barras” came the voice again. It was much louder, closer and made him jump. The small boy hugged himself tightly and pushed his wiry body back against the cave wall. He heard a scrabbling noise by the entrance of the cage and shut his eyes tightly as he’d used to do when frightened of the dark. If I can’t see the monster then he can’t see me repeated the mantra he’d used each night of his sixth year. The scrabbling was accompanied by a few blasphemous words and then the noise of rocks sliding.

The noise stopped. He heard footsteps stamping away and his father’s voice disappearing away from him. He breathed a sigh of relief and relaxed against the rocky wall. He changed position, kneeling up and stretching out his body. Shuffling along the sandy floor he inspected the cave’s entrance, praying that the noise of falling stones had not hampered his exit. Luckily he was safe. He cautiously peered around the cave wall and saw the furious figure of his father striding off up the beach.

Sorry it's taken so long!! Embarassed Embarassed

Henry sighed and turned towards the wall. His childish imagination thought that she would not see him, but he was sadly mistaken. Margaret took the boy by the shoulder and shook him to attention.
“Henry, your father wants to see you in his study in ten minutes.”
With a stern look, she began to strip off the covers of his bed and roughly pull him to his feet. She sent him off to the bathroom and finished off his bed. Henry limped into the bathroom, ankle throbbing, running the tap but not using its icy flow. He glanced in the mirror, noting his barely washed face without much pleasure, remembering the previous night’s ordeal. He stuck his mouth under the faucet, letting the coolness slip down his poor smoke - scorched throat. Margaret bustled in and looked at the boy disdainfully. She peeled off his pyjamas and began to soap his body, Henry whimpering as the cold water assaulted him.

Phillip meanwhile, paced across the narrow stretch of carpet that lined his study floor. He was angry with his son. Bemused as to his actions and frustrated with himself for not noting his sons behaviour over the past weeks. He had not been able to sleep after bringing the child home and had spent most of the early hours pacing the house. He went over and over the details provided by Jennifer and thought deeply about the best way to deal with his errant son. With no decision reached Phillip sighed long and loud, stretching out a hand towards his whiskey decanter. A glance at the grandfather clock told him that the sufficient hour had not been reached but still the amber liquid called to him. A sudden knock at the door stopped his longing
“Come in” he called.

The door opened and a small, scrubbed pink Henry emerged through the doorway. What was said in the study between father and son remained a secret between the pair, but a very subdued Henry appeared forty minutes later, and within the hour the pair could be seen walking solemnly towards the Barras house. As they knocked at the front door, Henry could still smell a faint smoky scent and blushed deeply. He had come to make his apologies, which he hoped would be accepted graciously. For all his cheek and bravado, Henry desperately desired the approval of his father. He knew that he would not be content, whilst his father disapproved of him.

LOL sorry! I really struggled to write it, and the bunny whispered "hey let them use their imaginations so I can get on with the story" Wink

Heres more:

Unfortunately for Henry the only person in the house was Jennifer. She answered the door after the third round of knocking and looked totally surprised to see Phillip and Henry.
“Oh Hallo!” she exclaimed. “What brings you both here?” she asked.
It’s as if she can’t remember what happened. thought Phillip privately.
“We wanted to have a quick word with you all” said Phillip, prodding Henry’s heel with the toe of his freshly polished shoe.
“All of us?” asked Jennifer, as if to wonder who he meant.
“Your husband? And children?” Phillip asked, beginning to despair of the woman, who was clearly not focussing on this.
“Oh” said Jennifer thinking hard. “Well I have been sketching some beautiful pieces of driftwood” she finally answered. “Would you like to see them?”
Phillip cleared his throat politely.
“Perhaps after we’ve spoken to your husband?” he asked, desperately hoping for some respite from the madness.
“Miles is on the beach” she said abruptly. “I can’t remember why but I know he went there” she said finally.
“Thank you” said Phillip, pretty sure that there would not be any more information forthcoming. He politely excused himself and indicated to Henry that a walk along the beach would be both pleasant fresh air and exercise. Henry squirmed a little, hating the thought of a public apology in front of the whole beach.

LOL *feels the bunny nibbling at her toes*. I wasn't sure this posted as my computer died as i hit submit! (low battery not ruineded pootle)

Heres even more.....!

Tony jumped as a figure appeared beside him.
“Careful idiot! You could be seen.” said his sister.
“Nah, he’s ages away” replied Tony, pointing after his father.
“Are you alright?” asked Clem. “Did you manage to hide well away?” Tony giggled at this.
“I must have” he giggled, “I am still in one whole piece!” The boy erupted in nervous laughing, which made his joke more amusing than it seemed to Clem.
“Shhhh you numbskull, he might hear us.”
Clem was being cautious, although Miles was far away down the beach. She was wise to be cautious, noted Tony, as their father was rather prone to distraction, and would frequently stop abruptly, looking behind him, as if he were being followed.
This was one of those moments. Tony and Clem crouched quickly behind a large rock, while their father squinted out to sea.

“Oww” squealed Tony. “I have pins and needles in my leg.”
“Stretch it out slowly” she whispered “and wiggle your toes.”
Tony grimaced and stretched out the leg in question. Clem smothered a giggle as she watched her brother’s deep concentration. Tongue clamped firmly between teeth to focus, he wiggled his toes, trying desperately to stay hidden. He turned to smile at his sister, but the look on her face distracted him from his sense of balance and over he went. His fall left him sprawled on the sand, and Clem quickly pulled him back close to her. As she shifted herself to fetch him, her dark red hair became visible above the pale grey rocks. Moments before, Miles had begun to walk back to the house, taking him past the rocks that concealed the children. Within seconds, the hair was recognised and he quickly stalked towards the rocks looking fiercely determined.

Hannah X
Tony squealed as he felt himself being hooked out of his hiding place by the armpit, Clem quickly followed him, hoping that she could prevent the worst punishment, or at least distract her fathers attention long enough to protect her brother. As her father began to give Tony a sharp and violent hiding, she turned towards the sound of a man’s voice, coming from the top of the rocks.
“Hello, Mr Barras?”
Miles heard the voice too and stopped, Tony falling weakly to the sand. Clem ran to her brother and scooped him into her arms, kissing the top of his head and stroking his hair.

“Mr Barras?” questioned Phillip again, trying to ignore the shameful treatment he had witnessed.
“Sir Foster” acknowledged Miles, rather concerned at what the MP had seen
“My son has something to say to you” Phillip began. He indicated that Henry should start his apology.
“Well er, I er..” began Henry.
“Come on child, Mr Barras has far more important things to do than listen to you stuttering” Phillip urged. Like giving that poor son of his a hiding he thought. Still, that’s none of my business, and I have far to much to do today.
“I’msorryIbrokeintoyour shed” said Henry very quickly, quietly and without raising his eyes from the sand.”
“What?” asked Miles impatiently, making Henry and the two other children jump sharply.
“He said…” began Phillip, placing his hand on top of the boy’s head, forcing him to look at the man.
“I’m sorry I broke into your shed” repeated Henry, voice barely above a whisper, “and for the fireworks.”
Miles looked sternly at the small boy.
“You have caused us lots of damage. We will have to buy the colonel a new shed, and replant his garden.”
“We will of course reimburse you” said Phillip, “and”, interjecting before Miles could protest, “He will not have any pocket money until it is all paid for.”
Tony looked aghast at his sister. What if his dad did that to him too? Clem hushed him, focussing on the conversation surrounding them.

Miles looked thoughtful. “I think that would be a good start” he paused for a moment. “Henry will of course need to help the children clear and tidy the garden.”
“Naturally” agreed Phillip. “If we’re all agreed then I need to take this scallywag home. I have an important lunchtime meeting.”

With that, Phillip turned on his heel and marched off home. Henry trailed despondently behind him. Clem looked at Tony, waiting for the penny to drop. She could see the look of horror cross his face as he realised what his father’s punishment meant. If Henry was to help them with the garden, it meant more time with the horrible boy. Tony turned towards his father to begin a protest but the look on his face stopped him in his tracks. Miles turned to stare out to sea. He felt annoyed that he’d wasted so much time looking for the children, he missed the sculpture he’d started making before the events of the previous evening. Without so much as a word he began to walk towards the house. Tony made as if to speak but Clem silenced him gently. “We don’t want to make him cross again” She stated matter of factly.

The two children put the events of the morning behind them and had a glorious day on the beach. They explored the caves and rock pools and Tony found himself a small crab. The crab seemed a friendly sort until Tony began to poke it with a piece of seaweed and it buried itself in the sandy pool bed. Clem sat with Tony in the shadow of the cave and they hungrily attacked their sandwiches. The meat pies went the same way, although Clem managed to savour the delicious meat and light pastry, for a little longer than her brother. Clem opened the bottles of ginger beer and the pair crunched thoughtfully on juicy sweet apples. They left two more bottles of ginger beer and a large jam tart in the shade on a rocky ledge. The two children moved out into the sunshine and Clem spread out the blanket that she’d wrapped round the food. She lay back staring at the clouds while Tony threw stones into the sea. As his game lost its thrill he settled down on the blanket, noticing his sister was asleep, soon found himself drifting off too. They slept in the warm cosiness of the sunshine and only woke up once the tide begun to nibble at their toes. Clem rose first, initially confused but soon rushing to save the blanket from the oncoming tide. Tony was soon awake and they quickly folded their blanket and stored it on the ledge.

“Oh I’m so hot now” sighed Clem.
“Me too” said Tony “ but I was having such a delicious dream!”
Clem giggled then recklessly pulled her dress over her head, with no regard to the seams or the buttons, and ran into the deliciously icy sea.
“Come on Slowcoach” she called to her brother.
Tony, needing no encouragement, quickly pulled off his shirt and shorts and joined his sister, giggling and splashing in the sea. Clem spent some time helping Tony to swim and she was incredibly proud to find he could manage five strokes unaided. The pair, feeling refreshed, came out of the sea and sat back in the sunshine, letting the afternoon rays dry their underclothes.

Clem fetched their clothes and the provisions they had left from lunch. They quickly dressed and tried to make themselves look a little more decent. They both finished up their lunchtime remains, stuffing the wrapper into the bottle. Clem carefully put the bottles back in the basket. She would take them to the shop later and collect her penny.

They soon started heading back for home. Clem remembered that she had to go to the shop and went into the kitchen to get the housekeeping money. She was annoyed to find that there was only a shilling left, and leant against the table puzzling to herself. She turned to the window as the side gate creaked and had to blink twice when she saw both her parents, heavily laden with shopping parcels, appear from round the side of the house.

“Hello darling!” called Jennifer. “We just popped down the road to get something for dinner.”
“ I don’t know about something for dinner, she bought the whole damn shop” exclaimed Miles.
Clem helped her parents pile up the food on the table, and began to help unwrap the parcels.
“I bought a lovely side of ham darling” said Jennifer. “And some salad to have with it.” I tried to make some bread earlier but as you can see something went wrong. Jennifer opened the lid of a tin to reveal a dark, burnt, lump.
“That Mrs Armstrong from the village was in the shop and she offered me some of hers. We paid for it of course, but what a ducky house. I should love to paint it.”
Clem smiled to herself at the thought of the Armstrong’s likely reaction to having a “Ducky house”.

Oh that was lovely. I wonder how long the Barrass parents can keep it up though. Laughing - at the idea that Clem is a better cook than her mother, even if she does make mistakes sometimes

Thanks Hannah!

From what we read about them, this reformation won't last long. Feeling gloomy, because the most responsible thing that pair ever did was to send their children away to school.

Lovely to see the kids are still able to enjoy themselves, and finally the parents bought some food! Smile

good to see Miles and Jennifer being vaguely responsible - i'm sure they're lovely people when they aren't caught up in their artwork but they should never have bene allowed to have children.

Thanks Hannah - major shock seeing Jennifer and Miles acting like grown ups!

I think another couple called Miles and Jennifer have wandered into the wrong house. Are you sure we're talking about the same Miles and Jennifer who don't seem to know where the supermarket is? Laughing

“What did she say mum?” asked Tony, but Jennifer chose not to hear his question.
“Could you set the table Clem?” asked Miles. Clem was astounded at his politeness, but remembered sadly that he often behaved like this after episodes of extreme anger, and it would not be long lasting. The previous time he’d gotten so furious, Tony had not been able to sit down without a rather plump cushion. Miles had followed this up with a trip to the theatre and fish and chips for tea, all in one weekend.

Tony trailed around after his sister, handing her silverware and napkins. They talked quietly to each other as they worked.
“Well I had a letter back from that councillor today” Miles could be heard recounting to his wife “I tried to phone him but the bloody little man wont talk to me. The cheek of some people!”
“Yes dear” said his wife placatingly, “maybe they just don’t want people on the island?”
“Why ever not?” said Miles. “It would be perfect, amazing views and undisturbed nature to work with.”

Miles entered baring a jug of salad dressing. He set the grey jug with the black swirls onto the table.
“That is the most creamy dressing I’ve ever had the pleasure to taste” he remarked. “Your mother has done herself proud!” he went back to the kitchen to continue his conversation.
Clem smirked behind his back. She knew that salad dressing was not something her mother could master. She couldn’t even make bread for goodness sake!

That sounds just like Miles, punishing Tony and giving everyone a treat all in the same weekend.

What a lovely clear, memorable description of the salad cream jug. Almost as though we would be seeing it again and would need to remember what it usually contained?

Salad cream, obviously!! Wink
The children helped to bring the food in. A delicious looking ham was set in the middle of the table on a large grey and black dish. The bread rolls, freshly baked by Mrs Armstrong and purchased after Jennifer’s accidental burning were set on the table. Tony was soon busy dipping his fingers into the jug of salad dressing and tasting the rich creamy mixture, which he predictably managed to get around his face. Clem spied his gluttony and removed the dressing with her hanky.
“But I like salad cream” said Tony in protest.
Clem did not answer but put the bread and butter in front of her brother who then took great pleasure in splitting the soft white bread with a knife and sliding in the rich golden butter while his sister fetched the apple pie, which was to be their desert, from the larder shelf.

It's the salad cream isn't it? The one that finally tips them over the edge?

Thanks Hannah.

Oh Chair! It's the salad cream (it has to be in bold apparently!) I can email you the transcript of three go if that helps!!

Maybe it is, maybe it isn't *grins knowingly*

“I’ve just made some custard” called Jennifer. “Can you come and get it Tony and put it on the sideboard.” Tony did as he was asked, narrowly avoiding a collision with his father who was bringing the salad to the table. He put the custard down on the dining table as he rushed to help Clem shut the large windows. The summer had truly ended and autumn days were beginning to set in with a ferocious rain storm.

Jennifer handed around the plates and looked pleased to see the healthy appetites of her family, who hungrily attacked the table of food.
“I love this ham” said Tony, helping himself to four large slices cut by his father.
“We can tell you greedy pig” said Clem. “Those slices were meant to feed all four of us!”
Tony stuck out his tongue at his sister and their parents laughed. Clem smiled. It felt good to be more like a normal family. Jennifer passed the rolls around the table and they all helped themselves to salad.

“Could you pass the salad dressing?” asked Miles.
Tony passed a grey jug with black swirls towards his father who promptly forgot about it as he took a large mouthful of ham with rather too much mustard. He leapt up from the table and ran to the kitchen for a glass of water.

Everyone, I'd like to make a huge apology about getting it wrong about the salad cream incident. It won't happen again, I promise.

Aitchemelle, is 'Three go to the Chalet School' on the Transcripts Website? If it isn't, please could you email the transcript to me? I'd be very grateful.

#499:  Author: LesleyLocation: Allhallows, Kent PostPosted: Wed Jul 27, 2005 6:11 pm

Chair, if you've never read Three Go then you would have no idea what the rest of us were talking about. Even if you had read it, then subsequently forgotten there's no need for apologies! Laughing

Hannah, this is good - more soon please.

#500:  Author: ChairLocation: Kent, England PostPosted: Wed Jul 27, 2005 6:15 pm

I have read Three Go but not for about seven years. I would love to read the transcript if it would be possible. It was one of my favourite books. The only way I found a copy at the time was by ordering it from my local library to be sent from another library. The book isn't available on the order list anymore.

ETA: I have just had a look on the Transcripts Website and Three Go is on there. I'm off to read it now. I'm sorry about asking so many questions.

Honestly Chair don't worry about asking questions - I don't know if I can speak for anyone else but I have (and still do) asked hundreds of questions since I joined the CBB!

Here's the very last bit of part one! I'm going to start part two later on or tomorrow or something and start it on a new thread (hoping the mods agree! ;) )

Miles stood in the doorway, red eyes still weeping and throat burning, sipping at his water. Tony spooned out the salad dressing onto the side of his fathers plate as the gentleman recovered himself and began once more to attend to his dinner. Clem took the jug from her brother and was about to add some to her plate when she saw a look cross Tony’s face, somewhere between absolute horror and stifled laughter. Clem paused and looked at her brother through narrowed eyes. Please don’t have played any tricks to ruin this she thought and turned to ask her mother a question. This question was not spoken as she caught a glimpse of her fathers face.

Wise to the mustard, he had taken a small amount of meat with some freshly dressed salad. As he put the fork into his mouth and began to chew, his expression turned sour and he ran again into the kitchen.
“Oops!” laughed Jennifer. “You would think your father had learnt about the mustard the first time!”
A red faced Miles appeared at the door.
“TONY” he bellowed. “THIS IS IT SON” and he pulled the small boy into the kitchen. Jennifer hastily followed, but the sounds that came from the room informed Clem that she had not been able to prevent the boy from the beating of his life.

Clem could hear the weeping from the kitchen and she began to join her brother in his pain and sorrow. Jennifer stood helplessly looking at her daughter and listening to her son and felt a deep sense of shock and failure. Wordlessly she entered the kitchen. She stood between the pair and took one look at the cowering boy on the floor. She picked him up gently and cuddled him to her as if he were a mere babe. "There's been quite enough of this!” she said “I'm not going to have Tony treated like this again. It's time they went to school, anyway. They haven't enough to do here to keep them out of mischief, and it's more than time they were beginning to learn something. You can just get to work and find schools for them!" This last comment was directed at her husband who, despite his raging face, began to look pale and frightened. Jennifer carried Tony away and put him to bed.

Sorry! For the benefit of anyone who hasnt read Three Go lately, the jug was actually custard. When Clem tells OOAO in 3go she says that Tony did it on purpose (Puring custard on his dads salad instead of dressing) but I think it was an accident cos they had 2 similar looking jugs! (Like we do at home- custard and gravy lol,)

#504:  Author: LesleyLocation: Allhallows, Kent PostPosted: Wed Jul 27, 2005 9:38 pm

Maybe he did do it by accident - but if so he should have warned his dad!

Thanks Hannah.

Poor Tony Confused

He was probably too torn between laughter at his mistake and fear or repercussions to say anything.

I am so glad Jennifer intervened and they are going to go to school

Looking forward to part two when you're ready Kiss
