Dear Santa,

Mama says that we aren't to send you letters yet as it isn't December and so you won't be able to get them (she told us about how your elves have to collect them all up and bring them to you) but Felix and I couldn't wait any longer. The kids are really excited and all the elders will be back too and Miss Lacey has been helping me improve my English so I wanted to try it out in a letter to you.

I know that now we're eleven we're too old for Christmas really – at least, thats what mama says – but Felix and I were writing to each other and we've decided that we want one more really special Christmas before we have to be all grown up. I said to Felix I'd write for him too cause hes in trouble again and doesn't think he'll have time and we do so want something and want to make sure you have time to get it.

Please can we have a trip to Canada for Christmas this year? I know that its a lot of organising because mama said so when we asked her but we really really want to go and visit everyone, it's ages since we saw Auntie Rob and now Auntie Madge has gone back too we want to see her as well! We've been really really good we promise, except for Felix forgetting things sometimes and me swearing at Miss Lacey when I was in a bad temper and I did say sorry. We promise to be even better next year if we're allowed.

On Christmas eve, we will leave milk for Rudolph and of course some of Annas biscuits to take back to your elves who've been so kind and helpful.

Yours,

Felix and Felicity Maynard

Oh that's very sweet! I have a friend who never believed in Santa Claus because her parents figured her older sisters would tell her anyway so not even when she was very, very young.

Dear Mr Clause,

You may recognise from my writing that I'm Len Maynard. This is because Marie-Claire has asked me to help her write her Christmas letter this year, to be sure that you can read what is written.

Firstly, she says that she would like for papa to get a new pair of slippers so that he can stop grumbling about his old ones, and would you please bring mama her marbles back as she keeps saying that we'll make her lose them.

Further, please can Chas get something to cheer him up and please buy something nice for Erica because she's been sad too recently. Also some new wool for Con for knitting because that's what Claire wanted to get her, but then she saw a better present, only she knows that Con wants wool.

For herself, she has asked that you bring her some more of the gingerbread that she liked so much last year, and also some new socks. There is also a book that she wants, she trusts that you will know which one, please.

As I'm too busy to write my own letter to you this year, she has also asked me to make my own request, which would be for a new umbrella as mine has a hole in. And a nice bouquet of flowers, as Claire insists that I must have something not boring as well.

Thankyou,

Yours,

Len and Claire Maynard

Ooh, thank you Santa. I hope Len gets something more exciting than a new brolly, though - what a Len-ish thing to ask for  . Flowers sound much better!

To Father Christmas,

As Claire has successfully talked us all into writing you our wishes, here is my list for this Christmas:

A less annoying sister

Some new winter socks for when I go back to university

'Lady Chatterley' and 'Jane Eyre', as I lost my copy of both

More sewing material

A new hot water bottle

Thankyou in advance. If you could also make sure you come down the chimney quietly that would be greatly appreciated. Last year you woke Claire up and she of course woke the rest of us up.

Yours,

Margot Maynard

Santa, O Santa, wherefore art thou?
Santa, O Santa, with coal on thy brow,
And joy in thy heart, as you travel the globe,
Santa, O Santa, please bring me a plough,
A set of horses and a wooden toy train,
A reign of bells and a better brain,
To remember my lessons, and all of my friends,
To laugh and to love and be happy again.
And amongst all the sweetness, sugared and sickly,
Come with presents, and do come quickly!

Chas Maynard

To Mr Claus,

Thankyou for all of my presents last year. I can't wait for you to come and visit again. We are all very excited. Geoff and I will help Anna make you a mince pie. Please make sure you come again. We will make the house look very nice for you.

This year please can you make me better again. Mama and papa worry a lot and I want them to be happy. Also I want to be able to play with Geoff outside. Please can you make me look like other children and please can I have curly hair. Please tell papa that I feel better now and he does not need to worry.

Also please look after all of the children in papas work. Please make them all well again. Bring them lots of presents for Christmas. Please make them smile. And please do not let them die. Also please bring Geoff some humbugs.

Phillipa (Anna helped a lot)

I have tried to keep the letters as close to the original as possible, but have corrected some spellings in those of the younger children - my elves are very good at deciphering! Santa

Santa,

Please bring plenty of sweets, a ship in a jar to replace the one Felix broke, some new mittens and a new school tie. Also the wood to build a new tree house, and some nice weather to do it in! A new set of paints would be handy too, after we all coated Sammy and I ran out. Mums says I must ask for a book, so please bring one of them, an interesting one.

It would be nice if you brought other people's presents, too. Mums reckons that's lazy and I should buy some stuff but if she really wants to pretend you still exist then she should realise you bring it all anyway. And tell dad to stop being so grumpy.

Michael Maynard.

To Santa Clause,

I am very excited about Christmas this year and cannot wait for you to come and visit. Would you like to stay for Christmas dinner? Auntie Hilda and Auntie Nell will be coming and it must be very sad to only have mince pies on Christmas day. I do hope you think I have been a good girl this year and will bring me some presents.

I told mama the other day what I wanted but she says to tell you as well and she can tell your elves what she has bought. I would very much like a pony though Mike said you couldn't get it down the chimney. If so please just leave it in the back garden but not the rose patch or mama will be cross and scold you.

Also please can I have some new books so that I can be clever like Flixy and a pretty new hair ribbon as all of mine are not very nice. Mama says I should be more careful but we do play fun games. All the things for my pony as well of course.

Please may we have new dolls for the dolls house as well as we love the house but all our dolls were for Len and Con and Margot and now they are very old and always ill. A beautiful new one to play with would be very very nice. And some chocolate please. And something nice for Anna for helping me with the letter and being good all year because she has been.

Thankyou.

Cecil Maynard

Santa,

Claire has come to help me write my letter to you, as she tells me she is collecting them up so that she and Mum can send them off soon, and is trying to get it done as quickly as possible. Apparently what I want for Christmas is a new doll and some outfits for it – if you wish to bring this, please do.

However, a new fountain pen would also be lovely as mine is rather old now, and the ink keeps leaking. A new dress to replace the one this happened to would be appreciated as well! If you could have a word with my tutor and get him to pass my essay in the spirit of Christmas cheer, I wouldn't mind, either!

Merry Christmas to you and all of your elves

Ah but no! I have full permission from the person who sent me the letters.

Dear Santa,

Sorry this is just a quick note, Claire is now harassing me almost hourly being the little pest she is. Basically, there is nothing I really want this Christmas, except perhaps for the oft bemoaned cane and right to use it – mainly on one Michael Maynard who manages to make life difficult not just at school but at home as well. I rather suspect that he'll come to read this over my shoulder, so I simply hope he takes heed of the words.

A couple of new blazers would be nice if you could, now we're old enough to wear what we want on weekends, and also perhaps a couple of new records to play in the common room. A few new Agatha Christie's would be nice, too. Oh, and a box of fudge to take back in the new year, school tradition and all that.

I'd better hand this over before Claire bursts with excitement.

Steve

Dear Maynards,

Thankyou for all of your letters to me and especially to young Claire for collecting them all together for me and making sure I know what you want. I cannot possibly bring the things otherwise, of course! Receiving them has made me smile, and I shall be sure to do my best to bring the things you ask for; though Mrs Maynard tells me she has bought you some things already.

I'd especially like to thank Anna for the sterling service she always provides in the line of sweets, and to Mr Maynard for donating a glass of his whisky every year. Sadly, I will never have time to write to all of the children in the world, but every year Mrs Claus makes me take a day out of planning for Christmas to write to some, and I was touched by all your little notes and thoughts.

May you have the merriest of Christmas seasons, but especially I hope that you are touched by the true meaning of the season. Until Christmas day,

Santa Claus.

One final little note to share with you all, that was left on the mantelpiece in Freudesheim above the stockings. I hope that you've all had a wonderful Advent and are looking forwards to a splendid Christmas!

Dear Maynards,

Following my letter to you, I leave this by way of simple explanation. One of my elves told me you were puzzled by the similarity between my handwriting and that of Mr Maynard's. The answer is, of course, thus; unbeknownst to you, I in fact attended school with your father, and was taught to write by the same teachers. You must ask him to tell you some of our tales.

Merry Christmas!
