December 1943

Dear Santa,

I know thirteen is a bit old to be writing to you, especially I’ve not actually believed in you since I was eight years old. I’m sorry about that, it was just I saw Auntie filling the stocking I had hung on the end of my bed and I decided you can’t be real. But I’m trying all my options now because I’m getting desperate I’ve been praying every night to Him, and I threw a penny into a wishing well and I’ve crossed my fingers a lot of times. Why do people do that? I’m sure it does nothing but give you sore fingers! What I would really like for next year would be for Auntie to get better. She doesn’t think I know but I do…I’m not a child anymore and I know she’s been poorly a long time and she has put her own life on hold to care for me. I’d like for her to get better and for her friendship with Mr Walters to continue. I’ve seen that he makes her happy and he’s always kind to me and I overheard the Vicar’s wife saying he was good for her. Oh my Goodness should I really have written that? I mean I never meant to hear it. Anyway if you could do you’re best to make Auntie better that would be wonderful and if you could possibly fit a couple of books on the sleigh, I’d love ‘Summer term at St Clare’s’ I do love Enid Blyton so! And maybe ‘Maid of the Abbey’ too? That’s by EJ Oxenham in case you’re not sure.

Love
Jacynth

How very sad - but glad she can still ask for her favourite books.

I love Jacynth choice of books. Sorry that she is asking for what we know is impossible.

Well if Santa's anything like me, Jacynth has made him cry. Poor kid.

Dear Santa,

I don’t know why I’m doing this. Auntie has died, you couldn’t save her and I suppose I never really thought you could and neither could God or maybe what people say is true and He only takes the best and the best die young. I’m at a School in Armifordshire now, a boarding school it is and I’m learning the cello, but I do miss Auntie. Please find Christmas Wish list below: -

1) A new ‘A’ string for my cello (mine snapped on Tuesday)

2) A new school scarf (I left mine on the train coming here for the holiday

3) Another copy of ‘Summer term at St Clare’s’ (Gay seems to have taken mine as her own!)

4)‘Claudine at St Clare’s’ (And could you send Gay one too? It would save me asking for a replacement next Christmas!)

5) Some nuts and a Satsuma in my stocking. (I know there is a War on Santa. But it’s Christmas)

6) A doll (like the one you bought me when I was 4, black hair, china face, pink frock: the one Auntie said looked like me. I know it was a long time ago and I have outgrown dolls but it’s one of the things I miss. When they cleared out the house after Auntie died, lots of our things were given away and I never had chance to say I wanted to keep it.)

7) I’d really like a family of my own. I know I have the Lamberts and Ruth and Tommy are being so kind, and Gay has taken me under her wing and Mike teases me something awful and I have the folk at School, Miss Wilson, the other Head when she gets back from being in hospital after an awful crash, and Mrs Maynard (who I’m not overly keen on – she’s a bit too intense and interfering – but please don’t tell anyone I think that, they might think I’m an ungrateful girl and I’m not.) I just wish I had a real family of my own.

Love
Jacynth

PS: 8) Could you do something about the War?

I hope Santa - or someone else - can make things right for her.

A very sad drabble; though a refreshing change to see someone not completely enamoured with Joey!

Thankyou.

Loved the comment about Joey. Just why did EBD turn a likeable schoolgirl into such an interfering woman?

December 1945

Dear Santa,
The War has ended. Hitler is dead. School is wonderful and I’m still chummy with Gay and a few others. Many thanks for last year’s gifts. I really feel part of the Lambert’s family now; Gay is nearly as close as a sister, although we don’t squabble as much as real sisters seem to. The Cello is going well. I’m still using ‘Cherry’ and as much as I’d simply adore a new Cello I know Cherry is special and I’d never stop playing her so it does seem daft to ask for a new one so I shan’t. Instead please peruse the following items and select accordingly.

1) Fifth Formers of St Clare’s (It’s the last in series and I would simply adore a complete set. Please send Gay her own copy too!)
2) A new fountain pen (I dropped mine and I rather bent the nib somewhat. Preferably a Parker please –or if funds are limited a Waterman)
3) A G string (for my Cello, I can feel mine is feeling rather too tight and it does need to be comfortable)
4) Gay has just reminded me of this. Bananas please. I know you go worldwide on Christmas Eve and somewhere must have them.

With love
Jacynth

PS: 5) Some new writing paper and envelopes. (This is my last sheet!)

That was a lovely ending (if it was the ending?) - thank you.

Unfortunately I've got "Yes, we have no bananas" going through my head now, though  .
