True to her word, Joey, after depositing her small daughters in the Kindergarten, made her way to Miss Annersley’s study. Flinging the door wide open she looked at Miss Annersley accusingly.

“Hilda,” she said. “My poor Margot cried herself to sleep last night because she’s so unhappy at this school and I want to know what you’re going to do about it.”

Poor Margot i think Jo is quite right the way Margot is being treated is no less than bullying, whatever the kids reasons! And while Jo's treatment of Margot might not help matters, its fairly understandable and i couldnt ignore a child in distress!

#413:  Author: LesleyLocation: Allhallows, Kent PostPosted: Fri Feb 18, 2005 6:41 am

But her treatment of her other two children is inexcusable - and Margot brought on her own pumishment - had she apologised for that there would not be a problem.

okay -i'm not 100% happy with this but here goes....

Miss Annersley stared at Jo.

“Shut the door please, and sit down,” she said, when she had quite recovered her breath. “Now what are you doing bursting in here like a whirlwind?”

“Margot told me everything last night,” Joey said. “The other girls are making her life a misery. Has no-one noticed before?”

“We have noticed that she was unhappy and withdrawn,” Miss Annersley admitted, “but there’s nothing we can do.”

“Of course there is,” Joey cried. “There must be.”

Miss Annersley shook her head. “We’re completely in the dark, no-one seems to know what the problem is.”

“Well what I’ve got from Margot is that ever since she returned to school after she had that fever no-one has talked to her and they seem to be excluding her from every blessed thing.” Joey said wildly.

“So the Kindergarten sent Margot to Coventry?” Miss Annersley asked.

“Essentially, yes,” Jo said, subdued. “But, Hilda, it can’t go on.”

“And her sisters?” Miss Annersley said, quietly.

“They’re up to their necks in it,” Jo said bitterly.

Seeing that Jo was rapidly working herself up into another state, Miss Annersley rang the bell for one of the maids. When Gladys appeared she asked for some tea, and settled back into her chair. Jo was wiping her eyes with her handkerchief.

“Now honestly, Jo,” Miss Annersley began, sending up a swift prayer for guidance, “can you tell me you never sent anyone to Coventry?”

Jo, silenced, stared at her former Head. “Well of course we did,” she began, “but it was different.”

“How?” Miss Annersley inquired, calmly.

“I don’t know,” Joey said, hysterically. “It just was! What are you going to do?”

“Nothing,” Miss Annersley said, calmly. “There’s nothing we can do.”

“But you must,” Jo pleaded. “My poor, poor darling.”

“Margot behaved extremely badly and is now reaping the benefits. Although I don’t agree with the methods the Kindergarten have employed, frankly Margot needed to be taught a lesson,” Miss Annersley said inflexibly.

Jo gave vent to a strangled sob and fled from the room.

“Never again,” she vowed, “will I interfere. If this doesn’t sort itself out I shall remove Margot and teach her myself. She’s far too delicate to be subjected to this.”

Jo’s threat, however, was needless. Now the story was out in the open, Miss Annersley had had a very serious talk with the most Junior members of the school about bullying and the Chalet School settled back down and awaited half-term with eager anticipation, for with half-term was the promise of camp.

Miss Wilson blew her whistle and was immediately surrounded by blue clad girls.

“Sit down and be quiet,” she ordered. The girls obediently squatted on the floor and waited eagerly to hear the news.

“As you know,” Miss Wilson began, “at the beginning of this term we said we hoped to go camping at half-term.” The girls held their breath. “Any girl found misbehaving would be barred from this trip.”

She paused and the girls looked around. Surely no-one had committed any sin great enough to warrant being stripped of this treat.

“We will all be leaving for the Brecon Beacons on Saturday morning. Matron will be packing form by form on Friday afternoon. Miss Annersley has informed me that you are all excused lessons so we may prepare for camp.”

The girls broke into excited chatter, for they had none of them been permitted to camp with Guides before. Miss Wilson let them have their head for a minute before holding up a hand. The chatter ceased instantly.

“You will be divided up into tents by your Captains, not according to your patrol so friends can remain together.”

Another burst of wildly excited chatter greeted this and some of the elder girls looked distinctly relieved. Again Miss Wilson held up a hand. “I’m sure that you have a lot to discuss so you may return to your patrol corners. Dismiss.”

The girls scattered, talking and laughing. Miss Wilson turned to Miss Burn.

“Bless them,” she said smiling. “I’m really rather looking forward to it.”

Those members of the Upper Third old enough to go on the weekend camp were wild with excitement, much to the dismay of those who were deemed too young to attend. Christine and Natalie found themselves in a tent with Sybil, Blossom, Nicole and Peggy Adams. Peggy Bettany and Esme Beranger were also in the same tent, ostensibly to supervise the younger girls. Betsy regarded the preparations mournfully, as she was considered too young to go.

“I wish I was coming,” she said wistfully. “It all looks like such fun.”

“Buck up, old thing,” Christine said bracingly. “You’ll be going home.”

“But it’s not the same,” Betsy sniffed, and refused to be consoled.

On the Friday afternoon all but three members of the Upper Third were up in their dormitories packing. Betsy, Pat Collins and Carol White sat in the form room bewailing their fate. Pat was to go home for the short half-term and Carol was too delicate to be allowed to camp.

“It’s such a beastly shame,” Carol said. “I’m as fit as anything now, I don’t know why they won’t let me go.”

“I know,” mourned Pat, “and it’s our first proper chance to camp. I was thrilled when the Abbess said we were going, but if Mummy wants me at home then it can’t be helped.”

“I can’t even go home now,” Betsy said. “The kids have managed to start chickenpox of all things, so we’re to stay with Auntie Joey.”

“But you’ll have a smashing time!” Pat said.

“Not as fun as camp,” Betsy pointed out.

“Now, now, girls!” Miss Linton said, entering the form room. “What’s this?”

“Oh please, Miss Linton, we want to go to camp.”

“I’m sorry, girls,” Miss Linton said, “but there are very good reasons, as you know. Now take those looks of your faces – A Guide laughs and sings on all occasions as you well know. I think I hear the others coming now so please get your books for the next lesson.”

The rest of the form poured in and Miss Linton turned their attention to history.

quite right - all will be revealed at the proper time.

“Are you quite sure you have everything, girls?” Miss Wilson asked. A chorus of affirmatives greeted her and she smiled. “Two to a pack then, Poppies and Roses in the first motor vehicle, Carnations and Lilies in the second, Cornflowers in the third with all the cooking equipment and the two large tents.”

The girls streamed towards the large coaches awaiting them, talking nineteen to the dozen. Christine and Sybil hefted one pack between them while Natalie and Peggy took another. Depositing their packs by the coach they scrambled on board. Christine and Sybil, both being Roses, went to the first coach and Natalie and Peggy as Carnations went to the second. Although at one time Natalie would have protested at being separated from her twin for the journey ahead of them, she now boarded her coach chattering excitedly with Peggy. Nicole and Blossom, as Poppies, were on the same coach as Christine and Sybil, and soon the quartet were engaged in an animated discussion about the camp. The weather was fine and the barometer steady, but Sybil regaled them with tales of when the school had been camping in the Tirol before the war, particularly of one night when the heavens opened and her aunt, Joey Maynard went round loosening the guy ropes with her friends.

“Will we have to do that?” said Nicole, with a worried expression.

“I wouldn’t know how,” Blossom said honestly.

“Oh tosh,” Christine broke in, “Peggy and Esme would see to it for us. Anyway, I wouldn’t be wanting to catch a cold being outside in nowt but my pajamas.”

The other three giggled at this northern commonsense and were soon giggling at the tale of “Auntie Jo’s hole”*. Presently the big coaches moved off and the journey to camp had begun.

Having arrived and pitched the tents in the large valley where they were making their camp, the girls gathered around Miss Wilson, eager to know what they were to do next. Casting a weather-eye at the sky and the fast approaching night, Miss Wilson set two patrols to wood gathering, one to unpacking the stores, one to setting out tablecloths and one to brewing tea in the large dixies as soon as sufficient wood had arrived. The girls scattered, calling to each other as they went. Christine was among those gathering wood, with Sybil and Blossom. Within minutes her overalls were filthy and even the usually neat, lady-like Sybil was disordered. Christine stared at her companions and grinned. Camp had truly begun.

Saturday was taken up with various badge tests, and most of the younger Guides were working hard towards their Second Class. Blossom and Natalie were sending increasingly jumbled morse messages to each other and Christine was endeavoring to master the art of firelighting. Later they gathered wood for the bonfire they would hold on the last night. Miss Wilson had impressed upon them that it was traditional, and they were looking forward to more of the camp legends told by Miss Wilson and Miss Cochrane, both of whom had been on the first big Chalet School camp to the Baumersee in the Tyrol.

“I wonder what it would be like,” Christine mused. “School abroad, I mean.”

Sybil, having lived abroad for the first few years of her life, and Peggy who had joined them on the wood-gathering expedition looked at each other and laughed.

“What’s so funny?” Christine said, hurt.

“Well, Sybs and I were there. At the Chalet School in the Tirol,” Peggy explained. “It wasn’t so very different. We were trilingual then – English, French and German, turn and turn about, although Aunt Madge had intended to start up a properly English School.”

“I hate the Germans,” Christine said, her eyes stony. “They killed my father.”

“I’m so sorry,” Peggy said, compassionately. “But you know, not all Germans are like that. They killed each other. Some of the girls at the school suffered terribly.”

“Like Maria and Joanna,” Sybil chipped in. “Not all Germans are bad, just some of them.”

“I hate ‘em all, and I’ll go on hating ‘em til my father comes back,” Christine said stubbornly. “We haven’t got enough wood yet. Come on.” She walked off as Peggy and Sybil exchanged glances

Despite their best attempts, Christine remained entrenched in her opinion all through supper and refused to say a word to anyone for the remainder of that evening. While the others were listening to thrilling tales of the first camp told by Miss Cochrane, she sat to one side brooding.

“Natalie, is she often like this?” Sybil whispered.

“Well, she hasn’t for ages. She adored Daddy, we both did, but she took it so hard when the telegram came that he was missing,” Natalie explained. “Mother always said we had to cling to the hope that Daddy was still alive. They never found his body, you know.”

“So he might come back?” Blossom asked.

Natalie shook her head gravely. “I don’t think so. I know Christine does but there’s not much chance now.”

Sybil and Blossom nodded. They knew people who were still waiting for news of loved ones, although as the days passed, the chances of their survival grew increasingly slim.

i lost about 5 pages of this - and rewriting is harder than i expected although i do know where im going with it! here's a little bit in the meantime

Sunday passed quietly, with short services in the morning, held by the Guiders. Miss Wilson then suggested a hike in the afternoon, an idea which was met with great enthusiasm. The girls hurried to pack a picnic lunch and set off up the valley.

The elder Guides walked along sedately but the younger Guides ran ahead, playing in the Autumn leaves as they went. It was true Autumn weather, clear and crisp, and the girls were glad to keep moving.

Peggy Bettany and Esme Beranger, walking slightly ahead of most of the group, were deep in conversation and scarcely noticed some of the younger Guides fly past.

“I like Christine, she’s a jolly kid,” Peggy mused.

“An imp of the first water,” Esme laughed, “but I agree with you. One can’t help but like her.”

“She seems to be having a good influence on my young cousin too,” Peggy said. “Sybil certainly looks less hangdog these days!”

“Well, Josette is so much stronger, and getting on at school,” Esme pointed out. “I hardly think you can credit Christine for Sybil’s change in manner.”

Peggy laughed. “Perhaps not, but the kid really has made a difference.”

Just then they heard a scream from up ahead. Swiftly the pair looked at each other and took to their heels.

You really don't need to leave us hanging in mid air.
No, Realy-oh, Truely-oh!

Cause we still don't know The Secret!

They found a cluster of girls peering over the edge.

“What’s happened?” Peggy asked. “Blossom, run and fetch one of the Guiders. Peggy – what’s going on?”

“It’s Christine,” Peggy sobbed.

“What about Christine?” Esme asked. “Where is she?”

“Oh she fell!” Natalie cried. “We were walking along, playing in the leaves and she just disappeared.”

poor christine!

Thanks Frances - I have read this WHOLE drabble today - oh yes all 25 pages (with a small break for dinner in the middle!) WOW I am so impressed!

What's the secret? First I thought (as most other people seemed to) that Christine was a boy, but now maybe I think that you wanted us to think that so we would be put off the REAL secret.

hmmmmm conspiracy theory! Very Happy

Peggy gingerly made her way to the edge of the track and looked down. The slope was steep, and if Christine had indeed fallen there was no way she could have survived.

“Christine?” she called. “It’s Peggy Bettany here. Are you hurt?”

“Not a bit!” Christine replied, as her hands appeared over the bank. The rest of her soon followed, muddy and scratched but unhurt.

“What happened?” Esme said, quickly taking stock of the situation.

“Well, we were playing in the leaves,” Christine explained. “And I think I must have been a little too close to the edge, for I fell and rolled a bit before fetching up against a tree.”

Natalie by this time had recovered herself sufficiently to fling herself at her sister and hug her fiercely.

“Oh Chris!” she sobbed. “I thought you were dead.”

“Steady on, old girl!” Christine said, embarrassed. “There’s no call for that sort of thing.”

Just at that moment, Miss Burn arrived, followed by Miss Linton. The Guiders had been thoroughly alarmed by Blossoms tale, and were highly relieved to see Christine standing there in one piece. They merely advised the girls to watch where they were going more carefully in future and the walk continued without further incident.

Later in the day, returning by a different route, they paused to look at the wild mountains spread before them.

“Just look at that,” Miss Robinson breathed.

“Not much compared to the Alps,” Miss Cochrane said in a low voice to Miss Linton, who wisely ignored her colleague.

“Hmmm I don’t like the look of that sky,” Miss Wilson said. “There’s a rainstorm coming, or my name isn’t Helena Wilson.”

Turning to the girls she announced loudly – “There’s rain coming, girls. We’re no more than twenty minutes from the camp so if we hurry we won’t even get splashed.”

As one the girls hurried back to the campsite, Miss Burn and Miss Wilson at the head of the party and Miss Linton, with Miss Robinson at the tail.

more Marilyn later - she isn't at camp so you'll see her when we get back to school.

Natalie, always the weaker twin, tired easily and after fifteen minutes showed signs of flagging. Christine, Blossom and Sybil urged her on.

“Come on, Nat!” Christine urged. “It’s not terribly far.”

“Miss Wilson’s there already,” Sybil added, as the first fat drops of rain began to fall. Within minutes they were wet from head to toe, and by the time they reached their tent, they were wet to the skin.

“So you see,” Natalie wound up, “it was the only thing to do, what with mother dead and father gone. We simply had to – do you understand? You simply mustn’t tell anyone or we’ll be separated and everything will have been for nothing.”

Sybil and Blossom nodded slowly, Nicole followed suit. They all looked at Peggy expectantly.
Finally she assented.

“Lawks, hurry!” Blossom said. “Bill said to be in the commissariat tent by ten to and its twelve to now!”

The girls gasped and struggled into their uniforms, making it across by the skin of their teeth.

But these are Chalet girls we're talking about - not spineless jellyfish!

There's a thought. Is Christine secretly a spineless jellyfish?

“Now I know we can’t have our campfire,” Miss Wilson said, effortlessly cutting through the chatter of the girls gathered in the commissariat tent. “But we can still have our singsong.”

The girls brightened up considerably, and some of the more nervous members of the party began to forget their fear of storms as they struck up a rousing chorus of “Clementine”.

The night passed peacefully, with the girls singing all their favourites and listening to the exquisite tones of the school's recognised soloists. At nine o'clock Miss Wilson sent very drowsy and content girls to bed, all in agreement that camp was, as Natalie expressed it, "just the thing - Miss Wilson is a dear to have thought of it."

and how much of that is yibble and begging?

Half-term at the Maynard residence was a very different story.

Madge Russell, upon hearing of the Lucy’s plight, had invited Julie and Betsy’s younger sister, Vi, to spend the holiday at the Round House with her own Josette, as the two were firm friends. Julie, having contracted a bad cold just before school ended, was obliged to spend much of the holiday in bed and Betsy was left to her own devices.

The triplets, although they had had it impressed upon them by their mother that they must be very kind to their visitor, were still rather in awe of Betsy who was, to quote Con, “a very big girl, a middle,”. Betsy, the most junior member of the most junior of the forms in the middle school, was understandably amused, but did not disillusion them. She read her books, and started a piece of embroidery but soon tired of it. She longed to do play with the triplets, but for the time being at least, a truce had been declared and the three little girls were all in all to each other.

Joey Maynard found Betsy moping in her room after church on Sunday.

“Why don’t you go out and play?” she asked, with the best intentions, indicating the triplets with a careless hand. The three little girls were rushing through the leaves, while Joey’s faithful maid watched indulgently.

Betsy curled up on the windowsill and stared out at the branches of the trees tossing in the wind. Joey sighed and left the room.

sorry for getting so behind - RL got in the way and then i discovered a massive EBDism which i now have to work out how to correct....however it may mean substantially reducing the marilyn storyline *sighs*

“Len, precious, come to Mamma!”

Len, upon hearing her mother’s voice, ceased playing a delightful and thoroughly messy game with her sisters to see what Joey wanted. The eldest of the triplets, Joey placed a great deal of responsibility on Len’s young shoulders, but the girl bore it well.

“What is it, Mamma?” Len asked eagerly when she reached her mother. Her face was flushed from the exertion and her curls were disordered. Joey looked at her daughter lovingly and pulled her close. She looked at Len seriously, the child’s solemn grey eyes meeting her black ones squarely.

“Do you remember that little chat I had with you at the beginning of half-term?” she asked seriously.
“Yes, Mamma. We have to be good because Julie wasn’t well,” Len replied dutifully.

“And that you had to be kind to Betsy because she would be lonely?” Joey said.

Len looked down at her boots, then she raised her honest little face to her mother.

“We tried, Mamma,” she said earnestly. “Honestly we did, but it’s so hard because Betsy’s such a big girl. She wouldn’t want to play with us, we’re just babies.” She sighed in an elderly manner.

“Well, how about you run up to her room and invite her out now?” Joey suggested, and was rewarded by seeing her daughter take to her heels and run to find Betsy, although Joey shuddered to think of the effect on her staircase.

Thanks Frances - nice to see more of this - and EBDisms just make it more authentic! Wink

Twenty minutes later a considerably more cheerful Betsy, led by an eager Len, passed the open door of the study where Joey sat writing. Both were wrapped up well, for the wind had turned cold and the sun was hidden behind clouds. Joey paused for a moment to listen to her daughter’s artless prattle and was pleased to hear a gurgle of laughter from Betsy.

“That’s the happiest I’ve heard her in a long time,” Joey mused. “It was such hard lines on her, not going to camp and then not being able to go home, and I fear the poor girl has been lonely. I’ve neglected them most shamefully.”

With this unrepentant thought Joey bent her head and applied herself to her writing.

An hour passed peacefully, the squeals of the children only just reaching Jo, who was deep in thought.

The triplets and Betsy were indulging in a leaf fight, Betsy taking on all three little girls simultaneously. Len and Con, more considerate of others, were more moderate in their attack, content merely to shower Betsy with leaves at unexpected intervals. Margot on the other hand, with a headstrong determination to win, was another story.

Betsy, whose common sense forbade any roughness in this play, soon found herself overwhelmed by the small girl who wielded handful after handful of crisp leaves, sometimes indiscriminately mixed with soil and grass. Surprised at last she sat down firmly and gripping Margot proceeded to roll her over and over amongst the thick leaves.

Unused to such treatment Margot set up a loud howl, despite the fact that her sisters (Len having copied Betsy’s treatment of Margot using Con) found rolling in the leaves highly amusing. Joey, roused from her reverie, ran into the garden with her pen still clutched in her hand.

But there is a secret! I know what it is.

I must admit, I never thought Frances would manage to drag it out this long. I'm impressed, Frances.

And by the way, Uto, if you're reading this, I consider I'm allowed a small gloat at the moment because of all the stress I'm in at work at the moment - see COT if you need enlightenment.

seeeeee - there is too a secret. and you will find out sometime soon(ish)

A sorry sight met her eyes. Len and Con sat in the leaves chuckling and Betsy, having scrambled to her feet, was picking leaves out of her hair. But it was Margot that Joey’s eye fixed on. She was sat in the middle of a pile of leaves, her rosy cheeks streaked with soil and tears, bawling.

Joey rushed to her at once, gathering the sobbing child into her arms and bustling indoors. Len and Con quieted instantly and looked first at each other, then at the ground.

“Come on,” Con said. “We’d best go in.”

Len nodded, subdued. Suddenly all the fun had gone out of the afternoon.
