Christine of the Chalet School
Christine of the Chalet School - Part Two
Ally

Joey knows cos Joey beta-d! anyway - after this you will get more Christine....

After that the triplets were noticeably divided. Len did her best to keep the peace but Con refused to forgive her younger sister for ruining what had been a wonderful game. Betsy, after getting over her initial shock, was subdued and guilty, worrying that she may have hurt Margot in some way.

The evening before the girls returned to school, Joey was having a little private chat with each of her girls as she tucked them up into bed.

“Now, Len, you’re my biggest girl. Remember you have to look after your sisters,” she said, dropping a kiss on Len’s forehead.

“Goodnight Con. See that you try hard at school. I was very pleased with what Miss Phipps said about your composition.” She bestowed a similar kiss on Con and crossed to Margot’s bed.

“Goodnight, my precious. You try your best, and remember if anyone’s nasty to you, you come to Mamma and she’ll sort them out,” she whispered tenderly, smothering the tearful little face with kisses. “Ssshh darling, Mamma’s own little Margot. Just think – it’ll soon be Christmas.”

Straightening up she repeated the old blessing that she said to her children each night and left the room.

Life in the Upper Third, although rather tame after the adventures of camp settled down more or less to what it was before half-term, although certain sharp-eyed members of staff were wont to comment that something was biting them.

“And those queer new kids, Natalie and Christine Bowes are in the middle of it or I’ll eat my hat,” Dollie Edwards said, one evening in the staff room.

“Calm down and have some cake,” Gillian Linton advised. “Oh I’ve no doubt there’s some mischief going on, and Nicole La Touche is involved – I’m sure of that. It’s probably just some prank or other.”

“Maybe,” Miss Burnett interjected “But I’m equally sure Sybil Russell and Blossom Willoughby are mixed up in it too. Peggy Adams and Betsy Lucy I’m not so sure about, but they run with that crowd so if there’s something brewing they know all about it and I don’t see them being willing accomplices to the kind of outrageous mischief Nicole La Touche tends towards.”

“Well there, as the charlady says, you ‘ave me,” Miss Edwards said. “I haven’t the foggiest.”

Betsy Lucy sat in the Middles Common Room feeling most unhappy. Her friends had a secret, she was sure of it, and it was something to do with camp. For the millionth time she resented the fact that she had been considered to young to partake in the delightful adventure, and felt that she had been exceedingly ill-treated.

Christine, entering a few minutes later, spied Betsy sitting by herself and went to join her.

“Matey’s the absolute limit,” she said by way of greeting.

Betsy looked at her briefly, then returned her gaze to the rest of the room.

Undeterred Christine continued. “Well I don’t see what business it is of her that my drawers aren’t in apple-pie order. As long as I can find things, well that’s all that matters to me.”

At this comment Betsy had to giggle despite herself. Encouraged by this Christine continued her tale of woe.

“Well then she wanted to know why the name-tapes on all my things were quite so clumsy. I explained they were the first things I’d sewn in my life, and that’s why most of them were all knots. I have to show her that I can sew a nametape on properly tomorrow in mending or I miss the evening. What’s eating you?”

Stunned by Christine’s matter of fact approach, Betsy opened up and the whole sorry story poured out.

“And I was just so unhappy,” Betsy hiccuped. “It wasn’t fair, just because I was young.”

Christine looked serious for a moment, then jumped to her feet.

“Come on,” she said, jerking her head in the direction of the door.

Betsy looked at her puzzled.

“Come on,” Christine repeated. “Afterall, it’s my secret to tell.”

*hopes Ann has a good lung capacity!*

Nemesis should have descended on them for they were supposed to stay in their common room for that hour but Marilyn who should have been on duty was in the library, working furiously. An ambitious girl, she was mostly content to leave the running of the school to her fellow prefects, Gillian Culver in particular. Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson had noticed this and were very worried.

“It’s not that she isn’t capabable of being a good head girl,” Miss Annerlsey sighed. “It’s that she isn’t a good head girl all the time.”

“The little girl with a curl,” Miss Wilson agreed. “When she’s good, she’s very very good; when she’s bad she’s the absolute limit.”

“Slang, Nell?” Miss Annersley queried gently.

Miss Wilson merely smiled at her colleague and friend.

“It’s all very well to joke about it,” Miss Annersley said, vexed. “I only wish I knew what to do.”

Time simply seemed to fly by, and they were looking forward to their Christmas Play. The Kindergarten were to be angels, much to Margot’s displeasure – that young lady having fancied herself as Mary.

“I have the right name,” she whined.

“So do we,” Len and Con chorused.

“Do not,” Margot said, pouting.

“Do so,” Con said, tactlessly. Len put a restraining hand on Con’s arm.

“Leave her,” she said, authoritatively.

In many ways, Len was the most grown-up of the triplets, and Con obeyed her. Len had still not forgiven Margot for the display of temper which had resulted in the Kindergarten’s disgrace earlier in the term, and then her outburst that had put paid to their fun in the garden. A sunshiny soul as a rule, if Len had one flaw in her as yet unformed personality it was her ability to hold a grudge.

For the next week Len remained distinctly cool towards her triplet and she had no problem inducing Con to follow in her wake. Len was rather in the way of being a leader among the kindergarten and led most of that form by the nose. Miss Phipps watched the situation anxiously, recognising the warning signs but found herself unable to do anything about it.

Hoping that one of Jo's friends in America sends her The Common Sense Book of Baby and Child Care, Dr Benjamin Spock, (1946), Pocket Books. Or that she makes enough money through HER books to pay the childrens' therapy bills. If only she knew a doctor who could suggest that she's dividing her children with her behaviour...

The second week of December, and the week before the end of term was bitterly cold. Evan Evans cheerfully prophesied snow by nightfall and certain members of the staff were inclined to agree with him.

“Thankfully the rehearsal this afternoon will keep most of them busy,” Miss Wilson noted as she collected her mid-morning coffee.

“I’ll organise a walk or games in the gym for those not involved,” Miss Burn volunteered. “And I’m sure some of the others will help me.” She looked at her colleagues appealingly.

“I will for one,” Miss Linton said.

“And me for another,” Miss Robinson chimed in.

“I also, if I am required,” Mdle Lachenais said, good-naturedly, “for the costumes are finished, and I will not be needed.”

“Well then we have quite enough!” Miss Burn said cheerfully. “Will you make an announcement at lunch, Miss Annersely?”

Miss Annersely nodded just as the bell pealed to signal a return to lessons.

I think they are not identical but Christine dyes her hair so to seem so. And Sybil and Blossom caught sight of her roots, which were in need of attention.

#46:  Author: francesnLocation: away with the faeries PostPosted: Thu Apr 28, 2005 10:41 pm

“Margot Maynard, go back and wait for your turn,” Miss Burn commdanded. Margot turned red and sulkily trailed to the back of the line. The scenes involving the whole school had been rehearsed early in the afternoon and they were enjoying the games organised by Miss Burn in the gym until it was time for the full dress rehearsal. The first flurries of snow, arriving as they sat down to lunch, had put paid to their walk, and those flurries had turned into a fully fledged storm.

Len stared coolly at her sister as she passed. That was the fifth time Margot had been reprimanded this afternoon and the uncompromising stare was too much for the wayward triplet. With a sob, Margot turned and fled from the gym.

Margot ran blindly into the snowstorm. It wasn’t fair. No-one loved her, no-one would miss her, no-one would care if she died.

Exhausted she sank into a pitiful little heap, sobbing. No-one was coming to rescue her, no-one had seen her go.

for hannah - because she is impatient

However, one person had seen her mad flight. Christine, watching from one of the upper windows, having finished in the hall, saw her rush out of the side door and into the blizzard. Without stopping to think, Christine turned and made for the Splasheries. Struggling into her coat, scarf and boots she opened the door and slipped out.

Christine was beginning to tire but she forced herself to keep going. She was terribly cold and, in an effort to keep herself awake, immersed in reciting the twelve times table. Unable to see where she was going she tripped and fell headlong into a snowdrift. Scrabbling around to see what she had fallen over she encountered a handful of material. Digging away frantically at the snow she uncovered Margot’s still form.

“Margot,” Christine said, shaking the girl. “Margot!”

She grabbed the tiny, blue hands and rubbed them, then slapped the pale cheeks.

“Margot, wake up!” she bawled. “It’s me, Margot, Christine. Listen to me and wake up.”

The child did not respond. With a vague memory of first aid lectures at Guides, Christine tried to find a pulse. It was present, but faint. She looked at the fragile chest, noting a slight rise and fall.

“Margot,” she cried. “Margot, please wake up, Margot. Oh someone, help me please! Someone!!!”

Luckily for the two girls someone had seen Christine go, and that someone was possessed of considerably more sense than Christine. Marilyn, having heard Christine rushing around the splashery had popped her head around the door in time to see her leave.

Taking to her heels and completely disregarding the rules governing running in the corridors she ran to Miss Annerlsey’s study, where she knew she would find that lady. Knocking on the door and bursting in she found Miss Annersley, Miss Wilson and Mrs Maynard.

“Oh, Miss Annersley, one of the middles has just gone outside. I don’t know who it was, I just saw her go. But someone has to go after her, you can’t see out there and it’s terribly cold.” After this speech Marilyn collapsed into an armchair.

Miss Wilson jumped to her feet.

“Hilda, I’ll assemble search parties.”

Miss Annersley nodded.

“I’ll warn Matron and ask the staff to find out which of the girls is missing,” Miss Annersley said calmly. “Hurry, Nell, we mustn’t lose any time.”

You know, considering what Joey is like in this drabble, I'm actually rather surprised that apparently she hasn't asked to see Margot already! I mean she is the typical neurotic parent as far as I can tell, and she is just sitting there chatting with Hilda and Nell while her family are blissfully aware of her presence in the school. Please correct me if I am wrong ans she is only waiting there so happily to have her family brought to her!!! I can see the point for Joey and Margot, but can you imagine what she will say to Christine? After all she was especially fond of Carola when she saved Len, imagine what the responce to Christine is going to be in that case!

So, could this be the instance in which Margot has that illness (was it bronchitis?) that made her so delicate? Hope this will show Joey what happens when you spoil a child that way, though actually, she'll probably just spoil Margot all the more because she's ill. And, of course, in the traditional Chalet School way, she's got to be ill. The Red Sarafan, anyone?

She was about three when she had that illness - which was bronchitis. Well before she started school of any sort. I think that the spoiling started as a result of it. (Don't forget that bronchitis was potentially serious before penecillin - and unpleasent enough even today - and in a two or three year old was probably a fairly serious illness.)

for ruth...

Christine lay down in the snow, next to Margot.

“I’m so tired,” she thought. “If only I could go to sleep….the snow isn’t nearly as cold as I thought. Maybe if I just shut my eyes……”

She drifted into blessed unconsciousness just as Nell Wilson and a band of the staff, wrapped up well against the weather and carrying large lamps, ventured out of the door.

“Which way did they go?” Miss Wilson bawled.

Marilyn shook her head. At her own request she had been permitted to join the search party and the staff, glad of the extra help and feeling that she would be more use outside that in, had agreed readily.

Miss Wilson motioned to Miss Burn and Miss Cochrane, both used to the heavy snows of the Alps, and sent them off in one direction while Miss Linton and Miss Robinson headed in another. She took Marilyn’s arm and hurried her off towards the woods.

#111:  Author: francesnLocation: away with the faeries PostPosted: Sun May 15, 2005 9:37 pm

Marilyn lost track of how long they were out in the storm, fighting the wind and the snow. Exhausted she stumbled again and again until she finally fell and lay prone.

Miss Wilson murmured a swift prayer and turned to assist the head girl, but Marilyn was on her feet, exclaiming wildly.

“Miss Wilson, oh, Miss Wilson!” she said breathlessly, scrabbling in the snow. “Look!”

Marilyn had uncovered a leg and a tiny white hand.

“Quickly, Marilyn,” Miss Wilson cried. “It looks like they’re both here.”

Marilyn dug frantically uncovering first Margot’s red-gold curls and then Christine’s brown locks.

“Are they…?” Marilyn faltered.

“Alive,” Miss Wilson cut in. “But very ill. If I take Christine, can you carry Margot?”

Marilyn nodded, willingly. “She’s so light, I’m sure I can manage.”

Miss Wilson nodded, and, lifting the unconscious Margot deposited her in Marilyn’s outstretched arms. Picking up Christine, she turned and began battling against the snow, toward the house.

Maybe it's not the fact that she's a he, but that she's really a Kryptonite (Superman's neice), and so when she's just about to collapse with pleuro-pneumonia, sustained from the burial undersnow, she'll recover in seconds.

I'm enjoying this drabble, though, like others really want to know what on earth this secret is!!!

Of that journey, neither Marilyn nor Miss Wilson could remember more than the barest outline. They met Miss Burn and Miss Cochrane a little more than five minutes from the school, and Marilyn gratefully handed over her burden to Miss Burn before, supported by Miss Cochrane, making her own way back.

Matey, ready and waiting with hot baths and warm beds had tended swiftly to Miss Wilson and Marilyn before returning to the San where Nurse and Sir James Russell were watching over the two still children.

“Someone must be told,” Miss Annersely said to Jo Maynard, later that day in the study.

“But my Margot!” Jo cried. “How can you expect me to think of anything else?! I must be with her – can’t you see that.” She turned a pleading face to her former headmistress.

“You’ll do no such thing,” Miss Annersley rapped out. “Now occupy yourself by finding someone for Natalie. Len and Con have you, and besides, they do not yet know how ill Margot is. Natalie is old enough to know, and does, yet she has no-one to comfort her.”

“They have a guardian,” Jo said, unwillingly.

“Good,” Miss Annersley said firmly. “Ask him to come here at once.”

Margot lay gravely ill in the San for five days. On the evening of the fifth day a very haggard and exhausted Jem Russell left this bedside vigil to see Joey.

She looked at him with pleading eyes, so large in her white face.

“Jem,” she whispered. “Please, no.”

He shook his head. “Not yet, but Joey, the crisis will come soon. I…I can only hope.”

“May I see her?” Joey asked desperately. “I need to be with my baby.”

Jem nodded his expression sober. It was important now that Joey have the time that was left with Margot. Shaking, Joey entered the sickroom. Margot lay so small and still on the white bed, her face flushed with the fever, her lips parted. She was barely breathing, the rise and fall of the frail chest was imperceptible except to the keenest observer.

Joey’s eyes filled with tears which spilled over and ran down her cheeks. Reaching over she took the limp hand and said softly, “Hold on, Margot. Mamma’s own little girl. Oh Margot don’t leave me, don’t leave me.” She sobbed quietly.

Jem shook his head and withdrew, motioning to the nurse to do the same.

“It’s all we can do now,” he said quietly outside. “She needs the time alone.”

From inside the sick-room rose strains of a beloved Russian folk-song - Joey was singing her youngest daughter to sleep.

My thoughts exactly! I've almost got to the stage where I'm hoping Margot will die just to annoy Joey and wake her up to her other duties Embarassed

About an hour later a disheveled Joey appeared in the doorway.

“Jem I do believe she’s stronger,” she whispered hoarsely.

Jem controlled his excitement and entered the sickroom.

“It may be that this is just a rally before the end,” he said soberly as he lifted the thin wrist. It may have been his imagination but the skin was cooler, the pulse a shade stronger and the breathing a little easier.

“Sing, Joey,” he said. “Sing until I tell you to stop.”

Joey sang obediently, her golden voice moving from song to song, all of which Margot knew and loved. Finally she returned the Red Sarafan.

Margot’s eyelashes fluttered. Surprised, hardly daring to hope, Joey stopped dead.

“Nice, Mamma. Sing.”

Tears streaming down her cheeks, Joey continued to sing softly. She knew her daughter would be well.

“How is Margot?” Miss Annersley asked later that day.

Matron’s face darkened. “Very bad still,” she said in soft tones. “Pneumonia. And she was not strong. She was out in the cold and the wet for so long. But, please God, she will recover. The fever has broken and Doctor Russell if very hopeful.”

“And Christine?” Miss Annersley asked.

“Well,” Matron said. “Christine is not, in fact, what we thought.”

“You mean…” Miss Annersley stopped as the implications of Matron’s statement dawned on her.

“Christine is a boy,” Matron nodded grimly. “Though how…”

Miss Annersley cut across her. “That is exactly what I intend to find out.”

Stopping a passing Junior bound on some lawful errand, Miss Annersley asked, “Vi, would you ask Natalie Bowes to come to my study?”

Something in the head’s tone forbade questions, and Vi Lucy rushed to do her bidding.

Natalie was found in the common room, staring blindly at the fire and twisting her hands in her lap. Although Matron and Nurse had kept from her just how serious Christine’s illness was she had not been spared the news entirely - the Chalet School did not believe in brining up its pupils to be spineless jellyfish.

Vi’s message awoke in Natalie a feeling of dread. Whatever the news, a summons from the Head at this moment could not be good. She dawdled as much as she dared on her way to the study and tapped on the door with the faintest of knocks.

Miss Annersley had been expecting her, however, and was listening in readiness.

“Enter,” she called.

Natalie opened the door a crack and sidled in.

“Sit down, Natalie,” said Miss Annersley, her tone lacking any warmth.

Natalie obediently sat in the chair indicated by Miss Annerlsey in front of the desk, waiting in trepidation.

The first part of this exists as a locked thread in St Agnes - I haven't got round to formatting it for Ally to archive yet Embarassed but this post should answer that question

“P-p-please, Miss Annersley,” she said in a small voice. “Is C..Christine going to die?”

Miss Annersley raised her eyebrows. “Christine?” she said in a questioning tone. “I suppose you mean your brother.”

Natalie flushed. “Yes,” she admitted very quietly.

“Do you realise just how serious what you’ve done is?”

For the first time Natalie sat up straight and looked her Headmistress squarely in the eye.

“We had to,” she said simply. “We didn’t have any choice. Mother had just died, and Father – well nobody knew about Father. We only ever heard that he was a prisoner of war, but he hasn’t come back and it was just too awful. Then Mrs Paske said we had to go to our guardian and he would send us to school. Really Miss Annersley it was just too easy to work it all out. Chris said they’d separate us and I couldn’t bear it, truly I couldn’t. Our guardian had never met us before, all he knew was we were twins – Chris asked Mrs Paske how much he knew – and Chris thought we could get away with it for a term, or maybe two as we’d know more about Father then. So on the train to London I lent Chris one of my frocks. He laughed and said it was a good thing we’d not had haircuts, his hair was nearly to his shoulders. Mine used to be so long, but he cut the plait off and we left it on the train. Well when we got off the train Mr Hays never asked. Chris just became Christine, and he entered us here but we were just so glad to be together.”

By this time Natalie was sobbing, Miss Annerlsey had come round the desk and was holding the shaking girl close.

“There, there, my dear,” she said in soothing tones. “In fact, Mr Hays has had news of your father.”

She got no further for Natalie immediately ceased to weep and looked at her with wide eyes.

“Is he coming home?” Natalie asked. “Is he safe?”

“My dear, he has been very ill, and he couldn’t come home before now. But, please God, he will be with us tomorrow.”

“Oh thank you, thank you!” Natalie cried. “I prayed so hard and to hear that he is safe…” Again tears filled her eyes, but these were tears of joy. Suddenly her face fell. “What will he think of us?” she asked fearfully.

Miss Annersley uttered a swift prayer for guidance and murmured. “I will explain to your father, I’m sure he will understand that you acted in good faith, however misguided.”

Natalie turned a shining face to her. “Would you?” she breathed. “I wouldn’t know what to say, he’s been away so long I don’t really remember him.”

Miss Annersely’s heart softened. “Oh you poor child, what a time you’ve had,” she thought. Outwardly, however, she gave no sign, merely held Natalie tight.

Chris, now mostly recovered and severely admonished by both his headmistress and his father, was only waiting at the Chalet School until he should be strong enough to return to their home. His father had gone ahead to sort their affairs, and Natalie was remaining at the Chalet School until the end of term.

“May I have some visitors please, Matron?” he asked one day. “I’m so bored of bed.”

“Just like a boy,” Matron sighed. “Who would you like to see? Natalie comes every evening.”

“Sybil and Betsy, please.” Chris said, very properly.

“Well I’ll say one thing for you,” Matron replied. “You have nice manners.”

“Is that a ‘yes’?” Chris asked, smiling his winning smile.

“It’s a we’ll see,” Matron said firmly.

Natalie, now she had recovered from her shock and the joy of seeing her father again, was pondering a serious matter. Eventually she decided to take matters into her own hands and after lunch, when they were supposed to be resting she made her way to the school san.

“Please, Matron,” she asked timidly, “Might I be allowed to see Margot? Just quickly.”

Matron took pity on the thin, white, upturned face, and, after checking that Margot was awake and well enough to receive visitors, she motioned Natalie though.

“Just a quick visit, mind,” she warned. “And I don’t want her overexcited.”

“Hello, Margot,” Natalie said tentatively.

Margot lifted her head, so small against the large white bed. “Natalie,” she cried. “Have you come to play with me?”

“No…not exactly. I’ve come to talk to you,” Natalie said. “Margot – do you like your sisters?”

“Of course,” Margot cried. “Everso neverso much. We’re bestest friends. That’s because we’re triplets.”

“Well,” Natalie began. “That’s how I feel about Chris.”

She stopped short as Margot cut across her. “Mamma says Chris saved my life. I nearly died.” This last with a touch of pride.

Natalie was consumed by unutterable loathing for the self-possessed mite before her. “Don’t you understand?” she said savagely. “Chris nearly died too, and he’s worth a thousand of you. He was all I had left in the world.” She burst into tears.

“Natalie, Natalie, please don’t cry. I’m sorry.” Margot said pathetically. “I…I won’t do it again. I promise.”

Natalie just looked at her contemptuously before turning on her heel and leaving the room.

Margot has absolutely no self-awareness at all, has she! She's more proud of the fact that she almost died than she could have led to the death of another. Hopefully Natalie's words will sink in a bit, but I'm sure Joey will pamper her so she forgets it Mad

When Joey brought Len and Con to see Margot half an hour later she found a very subdued little girl.

“You go in,” she said to Len and Con, “while I just to talk to Uncle Jem a moment.”

“May we see Uncle Jem too?” Len asked.

“Not now, darlings. Go and see Margot. I won’t be long.”

The two girls pushed open the door and made their way across the room to their triplet as Joey made her way down the narrow corridor to Matron’s room, fully intending to find out just what had upset Margot and why if had been allowed to happen. The door was slightly open and as she approached she heard voices inside, talking softly.

PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESE
give us another update. You authors aren't allowed to take breaks you know. We can't get much work done if we're forever checking surrepticiously on the internet.

Love this story.

“She’s got to learn,” said a man’s voice that Joey immediately identified as her brother-in-law. “It can’t go on like this. But it won’t stop until Joey realises what she’s doing.”

“Surely Margot’s punished herself enough?” asked a woman – Miss Phipps, Jo surmised.

“Not a bit of it,” said a voice Joey immediately recognised as Matron. “She has to learn, once and for all, that despite what Joey says or does she is not the only pebble on the beach.”

“Surely that’s a bit harsh, Gwyneth,” Miss Phipps said. “After all, there are Len and Con to consider.”

At this point Jem broke in. “But have you seen the way she treats them? It’s obvious to everyone, Len and Con included that Margot is Jo’s favourite and has been ever since she was tiny. And Margot knows it too.”

There was a silence as the two women digested this information.

“Margot’s not going to change until her mother does,” Jem said. “And, knowing Jo, that’s not likely.”

“She dotes on Margot,” Matron observed at length. “I remember her saying to me once, Margot was such a frail baby, but she wanted her to have a happy life even if it was only a short one. She couldn’t bear to deny the child anything.”

“Well she’s making a rod to beat her own back,” Jem sighed.

Joey crept away down the corridor, horrified. She hadn’t meant to eavesdrop, but could it be possible that she was at fault? That she was to blame for Margot’s behaviour? The same behaviour that had led to this illness?

Maybe Jo will now realise that she's to blame, and if she does, that should change her behaviour towards all her children fairly rapidly...*crosses fingers, and presses thumbs in the German way, and tries frantically to untangle the resulting very painful position of her hands*

Taking a deep breath, Joey pushed open the door to Margot's room, a bright smile on her face. She was greeted by Len and Con.

"Margot has something to ask you," Len said, importantly.

"We're going to see Uncle Jem now," Con added as she opened the door.

The two girls disappeared into the corridor, and Jo made her way slowly towards Margot's bed.

#291:  Author: francesnLocation: away with the faeries PostPosted: Wed Jun 29, 2005 11:19 pm

"Mamma," Margot began. "Was I truly very naughty to run away?"

Joey, strengthened by Jem's words, took a deep breath.

"Yes, you were."

She watched as Margot's face fell.

"Are…are you going to punish me, Mamma?"

Jo's head swam and she felt slightly sick but she nodded slowly and deliberately.

"Margot, it was very naughty to run away, and it means that I can't trust you, and Papa can't trust you, and Anna can't trust you, and Auntie Hilda and Auntie Nell can't trust you on your own. So until we can you will have to stay with me, or Anna, or a mistress or a prefect."

Margot's face fell, and Jo's heart bled. She longed to take the fragile girl into her arms and comfort her, cuddle her, tell her that Mamma would make it all better. But she steeled herself and said firmly – "I'm afraid you've made a lot of people worry about you, and you're going to have to say sorry to them."

She watched as the small girl drooped visibly, for above all things Margot hated saying she was sorry.

That same afternoon saw Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson making a hard decision.

"Giver her a chance, Hilda," Miss Wilson pleaded. "She's got pluck."

Miss Annersley shook her head regretfully. "I can't, Nell," she said simply. "She put herself and her own work in front of the school almost every time, and I can't risk that happening again."

"She's changed, Hilda, I'm sure she has,"

"But I'm not, Nell," Hilda sighed. "I'm not convinced at all."

"Just try, Hilda, please. Give the girl one more chance."

glad you're enjoying it, Chair! sorry for the distinct lack of updates everyone....I can only update when I'm at home, and I don't really feel like being here much at the moment

Marilyn knocked on the door of the study, her stomach churning with nervous dread. Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson, sitting in armchairs by the fireside looked at each other. Miss Wilson leant across and squeezed Miss Annersley’s arm supportively.

“If you’re sure this is the right thing to do, Hilda,” she whispered.

Miss Annersley nodded, and called in a calm voice – “Enter”.

penultimate post - and my resolution of the Marilyn mystery

Marilyn opened the door slowly and stepped through, her eyes immediately darting to the desk where she expected to find Miss Annersley. Upon seeing the mistresses sitting by the fireside she relaxed slightly. The formal interview she had been dreading was not going to take place, but what followed could be far worse.

Forcing herself to relax she took the chair indicated before all her composure deserted her.

“Please, Miss Annersley, Miss Wilson, I’m sorry,” she blurted out. “I….I haven’t been a good Head Girl. I know that now – in fact, I’d like to resign.”

The shocked expression of Miss Annersley was mirrored in Miss Wilson’s features.

“But, Marilyn,” she started. “Miss Annersley and I…well…we were prepared to give you another chance to show…”

Miss Annersley intervened at this point. “Marilyn, that is a very brave thing to say, and a very great honour to relinquish – are you sure?”

Marilyn took a deep breath and nodded. “My mind is made up, Miss Annersley. I’m sorry, Miss Wilson, but I realise now that being a good Head Girl is not about knowing best all the time, or organising other people to do the work. It’s about being willing to lead by example, giving your time and your thoughts unconditionally and being willing not just to take on the best jobs but to take on the worst too, and doing those unpleasant jobs as cheerfully and as well as you would any other. I just don’t think I can do it. Gill will make a much better Head Girl than I ever did, and I would like her to take my place.”

Miss Annersley nodded slowly. “Marilyn, thank you for letting us know.” She shot a quick glance at Miss Wilson, who nodded a fraction. “We accept your decision.”

Marilyn sagged in relief. “Thank you, Miss Annersley,” she sighed.

Thank you to everyone who’s beta-d, commented and generally encouraged me! You’re all stars!

Later that day Sybil, Betsy and Natalie were crowded round Chris’s bed.

“You do look different with short hair,” Sybil had said upon walking into the room.

Chris flushed furiously. “That’s soppy girlish thing to say,” he retorted.

Matron had provided them with tea, and a good time was had by all. Naturally conversation turned to matters of great interest to the Upper Third.

“How did they find out?” Sybil asked, open-mouthed.

“And didn’t you get into awful trouble?” Betsy added.

“Well they found out when they brought me back after I went out for Margot.” Chris said, by way of explanation. Sybil and Betsy nodded, the whole school having heard of the adventure by that time. “I didn’t get into any trouble at the time,” he continued. “That was Nat’s affair.”

“Oh Miss Annersley was ever so decent about it,” Natalie said. “She even explained to Father.”

Chris wriggled uncomfortably, remembering the interview he had had with that gentleman. Natalie caught his eye and grinned.

“Father was less decent about it,” she explained. “Said it was a deceitful, underhand thing to do.”

“Well I suppose it was,” Betsy said slowly. “But I don’t see what else you could have done. Besides, you had a term at the Chalet School.”

Chris nodded vigourously.

“Oh yes,” he agreed. “I wouldn’t have swapped that for anything. It’s the best school in the world.”

“It’s the Chalet School,” Natalie said.
