Post subject:  An Interview

Was looking through some old drabbles and discovered this - it was my drabble for the October Gather last year - enjoy!

Madge Russell sat back in her seat and waited until the door to the hotel room had closed behind the latest candidate. Then she looked across at her companion and smiled,
“I don't think so, Therese, do you?”

The Frenchwoman shook her head firmly, “Most assuredly not, my child. She would never be able to control a classroom.”

“True, the one thing our schoolmistresses must have is respect – can you imagine how Evvy would act with her?”

“Or any of the Middle School,” Therese Lepattre put in, “they are not tres gentile with those for whom they have no respect. Consider how they reacted to Matron Webb last term.”

Madge laughed, “Oh yes, our Middles are certainly not patient with weak teachers,” she sighed and rose to walk across to the window to gaze out at the traffic, “but she was our last hope, Therese, none of the four interviewees seemed suitable. Am I going to have to return to the Chalet School after all?”

Therese looked suitably shocked, “When you are so newly married? What would Herr Doctor Russell think? Of course not, Marguerite,” she flicked through the papers in front of her, “what of the first applicant? She seemed suitable.”

Madge sat beside the older woman and looked over her shoulder at the notes made on the applicant's file, “Well she does have an English degree,” she admitted grudgingly, “and from Oxford. Daughter of a Bishop and extensive knowledge of the Scriptures.”

“She is fluent in both French and German,” Therese murmured encouragingly, “and knows some Italian too.”

“Yes, yes,” Madge shook her head, “but she is so very quiet, can she control a class?”

“Her current Headmistress has written an extremely good reference,” Therese replied, “and has even mentioned that her appearance and demeanour may be deceptive.”

“True,” Madge frowned, “but is it too good a reference? I mean the Headmistress might want to be rid of this woman and be stretching the truth a little, or a lot. Suppose we engage her only to discover that she cannot cope?”

Therese considered for a few seconds, “We could engage her but with the understanding that her first term is a trial period? During that time we could observe her carefully. Should she not be suitable then we would only have her for one term.”

“That could work,” Madge murmured, “and perhaps give her special responsibility for the Juniors? That way she'll have less contact with the Middles and Seniors until we see how she's coping. Yes, I like that plan – very well,” she stood and walked over to the door and looked out into a small ante-room. Four women were sat in the room waiting, Madge smiled, “Many thanks for attending for the post of English Mistress at the Chalet School,” she said clearly, “we have made our decision. Miss Annersley, would you please come in?”

Haven't you posted this somewhere else, Lesley? I ask, because I've certainly read it before, and wasn't at the Gather....

Never mind, still enjoyable to read. :D

(Goodness, have just realised you only posted this as I switched on. I wasn't waiting for it, honest! )

I recognise it too, and I wasn't at any Gathers. It's still awesome, though.

I think you posted it after the last Gather, you know the one where you got waylaid on the M1 and missed the night of bedtime drabbles! Good, in triplicate! If Jo can do things x3 why shouldn't you!

Well I've enjoyed it for the first time, and with the time it is taking me to work through your many great drabbles, it will be some time before I probably would have got to it, so thank you.

That does sound familiar to me, but I like it a lot. I'm wondering if Madge wishes she had been able to go to University as grudgingly says Hilda has a Uni degree?
