Was that the right thing to do? wondered Kate once she was back in the pharmacy, and she continued to ask herself if she’d done the right thing at intervals through the rest of the day. After failing to concentrate at the typewriter and producing a label which said Insert one suppository into the left ear three times a day, due to reading two lines of a chart at the same time, she gave herself a stern talking to.

You need to pull yourself together or you’re going to do someone an injury. Anya wanted to know, she deserved to know, and you believe that or you wouldn’t have put yourself through that hassle with Phil Graves. She already knew anyway, she just wanted it confirmed.

She was so lost in her thoughts that she never noticed the arrival of Reg Entwhistle until he touched her arm and she jumped a mile.

“Goodness, Reg, you frightened the life out of me,” she exclaimed. “Are you alright?” she added, something about him didn’t look quite right.

*sniggers reprehensibly at Kate's new improved suppository application!*

#410:  Author: AlexLocation: Manchester, UK PostPosted: Sun Sep 11, 2005 7:56 pm

Trust me, wrong instructions are much easier with a computer, when you think that IH is inhale, IN insert, IJ inject and that LE is the left eye but LA is the left ear and you regularly have to type in such randomness as (my personal favourite) IJ1SGSCLU14DY or "Inject the contents of ONE pre-filled syringe by subcutaneous injection at lunchtime for 14 days." and SAFFBDMDU = "Apply sparingly to the affected area twice a day as directed." Our computer system is case sensitive and only recognises intstructions in capitals. If you accidently use lower case letters you can get all sorts of random instructions. This is before you get involved in fast codes - pre-programmed instructions for specific drugs eg. low dose aspirin = "DAO = Dissolve one tablet in water and take every morning with or after food.

Am reminded of the scene in 'Carry on Nurse' when a very young Joan Sims, playing a new student nurse, is asked to give a patient a suppository. She thinks it's just a large tablet and tries to get the male patient to take it by mouth until a passing Staff Nurse calls out

'Other end, Nurse!'

Said patient then grins at embarrassed Joan and says, 'Don't worry Nurse, with a face like mine it's a mistake anyone could make!'

Laughing Laughing Laughing

There probably won't be any of this tomorrow, as I have to go on a little trip to Manchester and sort some stuff out for the start of term.

“I’m fine,” he said. “I’ve just had a funny experience. I’ll have to swear you to secrecy or certain people will probably kill me.”

Kate nodded.

“I just met some of the prefects from the Chalet. They’d been on a painting expedition. Anyway, Len Maynard had tripped over and fallen on her painting, which was oil and rather thick, I gather.”

Kate’s mouth formed a silent ‘O’.

Reg grinned. “She was an absolute sight! Her face, her hair and all of her front were covered with paint, so I gave her a lift back to school.”

The smile left his face, “Unfortunately I think she was so annoyed that she’s never going to speak to me again.”

If at any point during the next few posts a mod feels this is in the wrong house, please feel free to adjust accordingly Smile but I think it should be ok here, even if EBD wouldn't have written it.

Well, well, thought Kate. That’s a turn up for the books.

“Reg? Are you….?” She tried again, “Do you…? Len?”

Reg flushed a dark shade of red. “Is it that obvious?”

“Only to me,” Kate hastened to reassure him. She shook her head, but Reg couldn’t tell whether it was at him or herself. “She probably wasn’t annoyed with you, just embarrassed. Give her a call later and ask her if she’s alright, then it won’t be left hanging between you.”

“Thanks, Kate,” he turned to go.

“And don’t worry,” she added. “Both of those secrets are safe with me.”

Now just because I've updated 2 days in a row, don't get any ideas. Glad you're all still reading though.

Chapter 8 – The Truth

Kate decided to visit Anya at the end of the day. She would have gone earlier but she was wary of meeting Phil on the ward, or of him interrupting what she suspected would be a difficult conversation.

Sister Norris greeted her when she arrived on the ward.

“Miss Miller, I’m glad you’re here. Miss Bachofen has seemed…troubled…today.”

Kate was surprised, this was the first indication that had been made that Sr. Norris was aware of the friendship between herself and Anya. Her expression must have hinted at something of this, because the nurse added, “There is very little that goes on in my ward that I don’t know about.” Kate was not to know that Sr Norris had seen that Anya was reading her own notes that morning, and had not gone into the room until later….it was not her place to argue with the doctors, but she had her opinions, and that girl had certainly deserved to know the truth.

Anya was lying awake on her bed staring at the plain white ceiling.

Kate sat down on the chair.

“Hi,” she said.

Anya did not speak. For a long time the little room was silent. The silence was not an uncomfortable one, thought Kate. She would sit there, and if Anya wanted to say something she would listen.

The silence continued.

At length, Anya found some words.

“My parents did not want me to know. They lied to me.”

Poor Anya, but if she's an adult, she's old enough to know. What did her parents think, that she'd die without realising it?

#445:  Author: AlexLocation: Manchester, UK PostPosted: Thu Oct 06, 2005 12:48 pm

Oh boy, thought Kate.

“I think,” said Kate, carefully, “that your parents do not want to believe the truth. They think the doctors are wrong.”

“They do not mean to lie?” asked Anya.

“They don’t believe that…..that you are going to die. So they have not told you that.” Kate decided that there had been enough skirting of issues. As she spoke, Anya let out a stifled sob. Kate took hold of Anya’s hand and the next moment tears were pouring down Anya’s cheeks. Neither of them noticed the door close with a quiet click. Sister Norris would see to it that they were not disturbed.

“Kate,” said Anya, when she had cried all the tears she had wanted to cry since she had come to Switzerland. “Kate, friend, I must ask you for help with something more.”

Kate nodded.

“I have a few weeks, a few months maybe. It is not going to get better. I am so tired already, I don’t know how long I will be able to think of these things. I want to write a letter to my parents. I want them to have it to read, afterwards, so that they do not blame themselves. But I cannot manage to write. I’m very tired. So I will tell you and you can write it.”

Kate stood up.

“Where are you going?” asked Anya.

“To get some paper and an envelope. I won’t be long.”

Kate purloined these items from the ever-reliable Sr. Norris.

Anya dictated the missive to Kate (a letter at a time, as it was in Danish, which Kate did not speak). At the end, she took the paper from Kate, wrote a few more words and signed her name in a shaky hand. Kate put the letter in the envelope and sealed it, and Anya addressed it. After all this effort, Anya was even paler than usual. She gave the letter to Kate.

“Look after it. When I die..” Anya’s pressed her lips together for a moment, “…give it to them, and tell them about today, about helping me to write. I’m tired now.”

Kate stood up to leave.

“Stay, please.”

Kate sat by her friend’s bed until she fell asleep and then she went home and put the letter under the lining of her underwear drawer. She lay on her bed and cried for about ten minutes. Suddenly she felt an overwhelming need to be as far away from the San as she could be.

“I’ll go for a walk,” she said to herself. Pausing only to pick up a cardigan, she suited the action to the word and was soon strolling along the Platz. Thoughts ran through her mind. I’m not surprised I’m feeling so wound up, she thought. I haven’t really had a chance to stop and consider since I arrived here. It’s been all go since I was offered the job.

“Hello, Kate,” said a voice, startling her.

Alex, do you have to leave us on that cliff? Please tell us who it is.

#477:  Author: AlexLocation: Manchester, UK PostPosted: Sat Oct 15, 2005 3:13 pm

I have no idea if anything specific is mentioned about the evening of the painting expedition (apart from the phone call) as I don't have my copy of Althea with me, so please ignore this possible EBDism. Also I think you can cut across the playing field to get to St Mildred's so please ignore this too!

“Goodness, you made me jump,” said Kate, recognising Len Maynard. “What are you doing here at this time?”

“I had to take a message to St. Mildred’s for Auntie Hilda,” explained Len. She giggled, “I always wonder why she can’t just phone”

Kate looked around and saw that she had come a lot further along the Platz that she had realised.

“I seem to be walking around in a complete daze!” she said to herself.

“Are you alright?” asked Len.

“What? Oh, I’ve just got a lot on my mind. I….” she stopped. Len Maynard didn’t seem like the gossiping type, but mentioning to your mother that you had seen a friend was hardly gossiping, and when the mother was married to her boss, and she was acting less than coherently, it would probably be better if she didn’t start babbling. “I’ve been rather busy these last few days, and I needed some fresh air.”

“I can imagine,” said Len, wryly. “Living in such a small place can get a bit claustrophobic sometimes.” A surprised look crossed her face. “I don’t think I realised that until today.”

Maybe they wanted to save money, but wouldn't they have some internal line?
Maybe there would be a humerous drabble about this one day, why send the girls running around all the time instead of phoning?

Must messages reach the exact person each time and not their secretary????

Kate knew that Len had had a stressful day, but she did not know that Hilda Annersley had deliberately sent the girl out to give her some space – as Len said, she could easily have used the telephone – but Len’s abruptness on the phone to Reg Entwistle had indicated some tension which needed to be dealt with.

“You’re going to Oxford next term aren’t you?” asked Kate.

Len smiled, “That’s true. I’m sure I’ll miss it once I’ve left, though.” She glanced at her watch. “Goodness, Auntie Hilda will be wondering what has happened to me. Nice to see you, Kate.”

Len returned to the school feeling better than she had done since her mishap that afternoon. Kate decided she should head back as well. The evening was starting to turn cooler and she was grateful for her cardigan.

Bernadette eyed Kate speculatively when that young woman arrived back at their chalet, but said nothing. Kate, catching the look, realised that she had not seen the midwife since abruptly departing the previous evening. If Bernadette had heard any rumours as to the cause, which undoubtedly she had as the San was as rife with gossip and speculation as any other hospital Kate had ever heard of, she gave no sign of it. Kate realised suddenly that she didn’t actually care what Phil Graves said, her conversation with Anya had put it all out of her mind. Sometimes, other peoples’ problems can give you a different perspective on your own, she thought. Everything that’s happened to me in the last few months is nothing compared to being told you’ve only got a few months to live. Some men….some people, in fact, were just difficult to get on with, or even plain nasty, but there were always a few good ’uns around to restore your faith in human nature.

Good for Kate - and it's true, suddenly realising how bad some others have it does wonders for getting rid of any concerns of your own.

Thanks Alex.

Sorry - this isn't an update.

I'm feeling completely uninspired at the moment, also RL is rather busy this week so I don't know that I'll be able to sit down and write anything....so don't hold your breath!

No pressure! A bit of healthy anticipation adds spice to the appetite .. Question mixed metaphor a la Joey!

Hope RL goes well (and calmly!) this week!

Just to say that I've not completely given up on this, but RL is going its own sweet way at the moment and when I did finally get a chance to sit down and drabble the other evening I couldn't think of a single word to write.

All good writers get writers' block at sometime or another, Alex. it's too good to give up on, so we'll wait patiently.
