“You spend all day writing stories instead of working!” she shouted. "It isn't right!"
"No, you're right, it isn't," he agreed amiably. "But that's just how it is."
She sank down into her chair, looking at him in disbelief. "But aren't you going to stop? Can't you see how damaging this is to your career? Your family? You must focus on the more important things."
"Like you did you mean," he asked. Not nastily, just curiously.
"I'm different," she answered. "It was my career, the only career I could have. And it didn't hurt my family - did it?" she added suddenly, almost afraid to hear the answer.
"No, no," he assured her. "It didn't hurt in the slightest, but it did inspire. How can you ask me to stop doing something you yourself taught me to admire and love? How can you expect me to cast it all aside in favour of a dry office career that does nothing to challenge me or keep me focused? I have to write! It's what keeps me going all day."
She looked at him once more. "Then I can't change your mind?" she asked sadly.
"I'm sorry. I know you don't like it, but I honestly don't see that it is harming anyone. Please, can't you just accept it and let me be?" he knelt down, taking her hands in his, his eyes searching hers and hoping to see understanding there.
She looked deep into his eyes, seeing his fear of rejection, his fear of not measuring up to her standards, his fear of not being good enough, and her heart went out to him once more. "I love you, how can I not accept anything you do? All I ask is that you try to find some balance, make your family happy and content too. Talk to your wife, explain to her how you have explained to me. Make her see that you will still be there, supporting her and your children. Don't let her continue being afraid that your stories are taking you away from her."
"I will Mamma," said Mike. "And thankyou."

Was this the result of some contest then?

Lovely little snippet Rachel - and setting up for a full blown drabble if you wanted to take it further.
