Or Four ways Kathie Ferrars never joined the Chalet School and one way she did in five drabbles of 100 words apiece. I swear that I haven't abandoned Another Challenge and am snatching moments to work on it, but these just wouldn't leave me alone!

1.

"I say," exclaimed Joey, dropping down into a chair next to Simone. "You'll never guess what!"

"If we're never to guess, Jo, then perhaps you should just tell us," said Frieda practically, while Marie passed her a steaming cup of coffee.

"The Robin's been usurped as school baby! Can you believe it?" Joey asked. "Madame just engaged a new English mistress, and it's her niece. She's only four. I got to meet her when I was up at the Sonnalpe and she's a little darling. Her name's Kathie and Ma...dame says that she's already better at maths than I am!"

2.

"It's so nice to hear Beth enthusing about school," said Anne Chester, sipping thoughtfully on her tea. "I can't tell you how glad I am that the Chalet School came to Guernsey."

Janie nodded her agreement. "Oh yes, I feel the same. I wonder if others on the island are going to move any of their girls from one of the old schools."

"You know it's funny you should mention that," said Anne. "Do you know Kit Ferrars? I ran into her the other day. She's got a daughter around Nancy's age and was most interested in the Chalet School."

3.

Rosalie frowned into her tea and passed a letter to Hilda.

"My cousin and his wife were recently killed during a raid on Dover and I have come into the guardianship of their young niece. I am seeking to enroll her at your establishment at the earliest convenience, as I reside in Canada and believe that the crossing would be too unsafe for her.

Your school has been recommended to me for my new ward, owing to the holistic approach you have towards both mind and body. I understand her to be an excellent student, although currently quite emotionally delicate..."

4.

"Emily, Beth mentioned that you had a younger sister Kathie's age who's also planning on Oxford," remarked Madeline Grayson, passing across a plate of biscuits.

"Yes, although Lucy's will be in Switzerland for a year first," said Emily. "There's a new finishing school just opening up, which a friend from school told her about."

"That sounds like something Kathie needs," chuckled Beth.

Kathie glared at her cousin.

"Actually, based on what I know about the school and Kathie, I think she'd enjoy it there," replied Emily. "It's going to be a great opportunity for languages."

Kathie's eyes just lit up.

5.
Nell Wilson hated job interviews. She sat in the hotel lounge, sipping at her tea and people watching as she waited for the next applicant.

She saw an old man leaning heavily on his crutches as a young schoolgirl helped him through a set of doors. A heavily made up lady started to move towards Nell, who breathed a sigh of relief when she greeted someone at a nearby table. She glanced down at her watch, and when she looked up again, the same schoolgirl she'd noticed earlier was standing nearby, eyes wide and hopeful.

"Miss Wilson? I'm Kathleen Ferrars."

Based off my own past for Kathie, each scenario is a "what if" from a different death that did or did not happen. One day maybe I'll manage to write that past... but I promise, only after Another Challenge is finished!

That was excellent, Torri - though it took me a while to work out which was was the one she did - of course Kathie did look like a schoolgirl when she started at the CS but the job interview did give it away!

Pleased about Another Challenge

Thank you

Lovely, Torri! And if you ever felt like expanding the first scenario into a full fic I'd love to read it... just putting it out there!

Each of these - in different ways - left me with a bit of a tear in my eye. Thanks Torri, that was lovely.

Actually, the original start for this one was a little more fuller and I decided it was ridiculously convoluted for a little piece like this, so there is a possibility of expansion!

Although one of the problems with expansion of any sort are the headaches over ages and birth years and the like, which didn't become so apparent until I tried to match Kathie and Nell Randolph being in the same year at Oxford! :banghead:

Thanks for all the kind words and lovely feedback!
