New drabble, no title yet... I hope you like it!

"Hilda, " an anxious face peered round the study door. Hilda Annersley looked up from her endless correspondence, and her grey eyes widened in surprise as caught sight of her secretary expression.
"What is it, Rosalie? " she asked, concerned, "Is there something wrong? "
"I don't know, " Rosalie replied slowly, closing the door of the study behind her, "Anna's here, from Freudesheim. She says that neither Joey nor Jack sent her, but she needs to talk to you. She seems... agitated. "
Hilda thought swiftly.
"Send her in please, my dear, " she said, "And please stay within call in case I need a messenger. " Rosalie nodded, and the next minute she had ushered Anna into the study and silently departed. Hilda rose to her feet to greet her unexpected guest.
"Come in, Anna, " she indicated a nearby seat, "What can I do for you? "
Anna ignored the offered chair, and swallowed nervously. She pressed her hands together in front of her, and shifted slightly from foot to foot.
"Gnadiges Fraulein... " she began, the stopped. This was so unlike the usual self-controlled, solid Anna that Hilda was convinced there was something badly wrong. Taking her gently by the arm, she settled Anna on the sofa, and sat down next to her.
"Now, Anna, " she said, firmly, "Tell me what it is that has happened to upset you. "
To her astonishment, tears began to well up in Anna's eyes, but then she determinedly blinked them back and faced the headmistress.
"It is bad, " she stated, baldly, "Very bad. It is not my place... but I must. Frau Maynard... " she swallowed again.
"Has something happened to Mrs Maynard? " Hilda asked gently. Anna shook her head.
"No, but it will. It already has. Ach, " she shook her head, "I am foolish, I am acting as a child. "
"Anna, " Hilda said firmly, "You have been with Joey and Jack for twenty years. I know you would do or say nothing to harm them, nor would you act improperly. If you think there is something I need to know, then I trust your judgment. "
Anna looked at Hilda for a long moment, then nodded.
"Very well. And Frau Joey will need you, I did not know who else to come to, " she took a deep breath, "I fear... I fear for her. "
Anna looked down at the rug on the floor as if collecting her thoughts, and then began.

Gah, cliffs. And I'm scared of heights. What IS going on over at Freudesheim? (I'm contemplating Joey as a drug addict as a result of all the little doses over the years)

I'm tempted to leave this for a bit longer just to see what other ideas you come up with! Anyway, this should put you out of your misery (for now...)

"The Herr Doctor has been... impatient, lately, " Hilda smiled to herself at Anna's choice of word, but immediately became sober as she contined, "He has been going out, much. Frau Joey and das kinder went to Montreux last night, and today, " she took a deep breath, and then carried on, flatly, "He came home with a girl. I think she is from the Sanatorium, a secretary. They were... laughing. I was in my kitchen. They took suitcases and went in the car. When they had gone, I found... I found this. "
With a visible effort, Anna produced an envelope from her pocket and handed it over to Hilda. It was addressed to Joey. Hilda looked up sharply.
"Ja, I know, " Anna looked at her directly, "Never before have I looked at another's letter. But this time... I was concerned. They laughed, " she explained.
Hilda sat, holding the letter, in something of a quandry. Anna sighed, and took it back.
"No, you will not read it, " it was a statement, "But I will tell you that I do not wish Frau Joey to do so. There are evil words in there. Terrible things. He has gone and will not return. And she does not know it. "

Poor Anna, what an awful situation for her, and how typical of her to want to protect Joey from the letter Jack has written. What advice can Hilda give in this situation? Would Joey even believe it if she was told, and didn't read the letter herself?

I can see so many problems... Thanks, Joan.

Why do they always want to shield Jo from bad news. She'll have to get used to the idea sooner or later.

Gosh - but how can they stop Joey from knowing - unless someone goes after Jack and hauls him back before Jo knows anything about it :?

Thanks Joan

Interesting how we all assumed it was Joey who was the problem - I thought she'd been at the cooking sherry!

Poor Joey when she finds out cos presumably they can't hide it from her forever. And poor Anna to have to pick up the pieces.

Pokes Jack for being too cowardly to tell Joey to her face

Post subject:

What a rat Jack is - to leave a letter and not face Joey - can understand Anna wanting to protect Joey - perhaps she hopes Hilda will be able to pass on the news somewhat less bluntly than the letter?

Thanks Joan

Well, when you consider what he's had to put up with over the years, perhaps he's due to have some fun.

Perhaps he really needs to escape from having his salon invaded by naughty Middles every Sunday.

Sorry Jennie - that's no excuse for leaving with another women and not even having the decency to tell her face-to-face. If he didn't want Joey to behave in the way that she did why didn't he speak with her?

Author:  Jennie [ Sun Aug 10, 2008 2:20 pm ]
Post subject:

He's being a coward about it, mostly, I think, because he knows how Jo will react, and wants to escape that.

I agree he's a cad, a rat and a coward, but I do find it understandable.

Author:  Abi [ Sun Aug 10, 2008 3:19 pm ]
Post subject:

Whether it's understandable or not, it doesn't make it right. If he was unhappy with anything Joey had done he should have spoken to Joey about it - she might have been reasonable. And even if she hadn't been, there are very, very few circumstances where it would be excusable to simply take off like that.

I never said that it was right, or decent, or kind, I just said that it was understandable. At least he left a letter, didn't just walk out with all his things and leave no message behind, and lots of men do that.

Joan, you have managed to inject our beloved fictional characters with complete realism here!

I suspect a number of us have had men (or know someone who has)either just walk out or leave a note.

Yes, the worst was the friend whose husband left a note that he was moving to be with his true love David. Much harder to take than leaving to be with the 20 year old blonde.

Exactly, there's no way you can avoid bad things happening in your life, they happen to everyone, why not Joey??
