Post subject:  A New Era For The Chalet School

Please be nice to me in my first drabble, have been sitting reading everybody elses drabbles for ages, and have been inspired to write myself! However, I do not claim to be a writer or particularly imaginative, so please please bear with me, espeically while I set up the plot, also just to warn real life will get in the way at times, as i already know...have been writting this for a while!

This is set in the late 1980s/early 1990s, also bear with me for any EBDisms and mistakes I have made...feel free to correct/point out. This will contain some possible sensitive nature to it as the plot progresses

The Chalet School had always been a very close connection to the San. In fact the San used to provide the Chalet School with many students in it's TB treatment days, mainly from treating patients with children or treating their siblings. However, that level of treatment had long been outdated by up to date injections and antibiotics. Since then the Sannatorium on the Gormetz Platz had been through differing specialist treatments for various illnesses and diseases. Now only in the recent years had it decided on it's specialsation, that was paediatrics. This included the treatment of cancer, disabilities and infantile diseases, and a specialised infant intensive care unit for the area.

Since becoming a paediatric hospital, and opening it's doors up to private, NHS and some charity cases the Sannatorium had gone from strength to strength. The hospital wings were now all named for children's Saint's; St Agnus for those undergoing treatment for cancer, St. Margaret of Antioch for the specialist infant intensive care unit, St. Giles for the Disablilites unit and St Nicholas for the infantile diseases unit.

The school also took in some of the Sans occupants for lessons, these were mainly the cancer suffer's. It helped the children within the San to have as normal a life as possible, and for many of the cancer ward patients going out to school when they could manage it made a huge difference to their daily lives. Also many of them loved the school atmosphere, and having all the new playmates and visitors cheered up the younger children's days no end.

The San had been transformed by specialists, entertainers and artists. Once a month a different entertainer would come to the San and put on a show for all the children well enough to attend it, in fact sometimes the surrounding residents would also come and join them in their entertainment! The school also came and performed all their concerts, shows and pantos in the San as well.

The specialists had created three separate sensory rooms for the use of the patients and their families, one was sound and light and contained beautiful fibre optic lights, bubble lights, lava lanps and fairy lights which moved to various types of music. The was also a sound and sensory room where sound could be created, either by playing instruments or by using a patients movement on some of the new technology, this would then create sounds. The final room was a soft toys and ball pool room, and nearly every patient loved this room for the enjoyment value it brought.

The finishing touch to the building had been brought about by various artists, all affiliated to the school. Each unit had a different theme to it's art; St Agnus had a woodland feel with all of it's day rooms being turned into wooland clearings and wards being turned into animals burrows, St Margaret had been tured into the sky, and the day rooms were a mix of day and night scenes and the passages of the unit were simply covered in clouds and birds, St Giles was a summer garden with the wards being turned into a vegetable patch and the day rooms into greenhouses and finally St Nicolas had been turned into an underwater world, with the passages as coral reefs, and the wards being dedicated to different types of fish. Everybody loved their ward and unit for what it was, but all loved to visit everywhere else to see what was new and discover worlds beyond them.

It was no suprise why the San itself was so popular, why it had a waiting list and why it was one of the most popular referal centres for treatment.

However, the San had again expanded, but the expansion was not just contained within the San itself. It was giving the head of the san, Reg Entwistle a major headache because of the amount of work it was creating for him and his team. On top of this most irregular expansion, otherwise known as the Jungle world, was also a new extension that was being built onto the San, and would shortly become the new Polar world to it's peadiatrics high dependency unit for children which was due to be opened alongside the Jungle unit that September.

"And I only have two months to find the right staff for the Jungle unit, and that's going to be tough as they will have to be so highly qualified. Although the Polar unit, now that's proving no real problems a few more staff and we'll be ready to go as soon as the equipments installed and Elinor has finished painting." Reg sat with his eyes closed, quietly musing to himself not realising he was in fact speaking out loud.

"I wonder...", Reg picked up the phone and started to dial...

edited to clarify a few points and correct some abysmal spelling!

This sounds lovely and it is great to see what happens to the San after TB became more of an non-issue.

Post subject:  A New Era At The Chalet School - Part 2 11/07

OK just a little update, purely because I know this bit fits, but not happy with the next bit will get it up again soon...also watch out for some possible crossovers with other drabbler's characters...gold star if you ever get it!

"Lucy, it's Reg Entwistle here." Reg waited for a reply, cursing the slight delay Switzerland to UK calls sometimes had.

"Yes That's correct from the the Platz San." Here he paused, grinning at the surprised response coming for the other end of the phone.

"I know, I'm far to old for this, but I now only head this place, I do very little ward rounds and treatment of out patients. In fact It's all a little beyond me!" Reg added this final comment conspiratorially a faint sound of a woman giggling could be heard at this.

"I don't know if you heard from Margot...ok Sister Mary Theresa to you then! Anyway back to the point I know she's been in touch with many who have trained as nurses or doctors as we are going to need many new staff."

"Yes that's correct. Lucy, what I would Like to ask you is whether you would come to interview for the place of the new Jungle world unit...Yes that's the one that's based over there."

Here there was a most definite pause before Reg visibly relaxed "Lucy, I'm glad to hear that, we always find staff more useful if they know something about us all in the first place...What's that?...Sorry I haven't told you that, the role you will be interviewed for is Unit Matron."

A sudden squeal and shocked sounding tones came over the phone at this information.

"Did you intend on, leaving me with any hearing?" Reg asked dryly, "Well what did you expect you've been working in paediatrics for, oh, about 15 years now haven't you?" A pause while the reply was given. "Yes, Your serving Doctor will be Margot herself who is highly specialised in the field. Anyway you'll not be the only new starter, we'll ask you to come up in August and have a month in the St. Giles unit before we send you out on your own, we're not that mean!" Reg laughed at this though, there was a time when there was very little induction for new staff, who were expected to get on with it.

"Sorry?"

"Ah yes, our other new members include Luigi, the new doctor for the St. Agnes, cancer, unit and St Margaret, Infant ICU. Vicky is due to retire next year and we think he'll be the perfect successor, and then there are all those underneath you, many of them have only been in the care and nursing side for a few years so you will be infinately superior to most of them!" More laughter followed this comment.

"Yes, I must let you go, I'm due to speak to someone else very shortly. We'll sen you a letter confirming it, ok?"

"Goodbye Lucy, a great thing you will be for us."

Reg put the phone down, and allowed himself a sigh and a smile of relief.
