Struggling into her lifejacket she hurried to the staircase, trying hard not to panic, resisting the urge to push her way through the heaving crowd. Children, scared and vocal, seemed to be everywhere. A steward was shouting instructions, but it was too noisy and she couldn't hear. There was a lurch that knocked most people off balance. The lights went out. The crowd moved and she found she could take a few steps forward, but the steps were moving too. It was harder to climb, she couldn't see which way she should be moving. Jeanne slipped, and started to pray.
