Post subject:  The Wedding (Short update 8/3, p.2)

Those of you who have been reading this Saga from the beginning will be aware that I am not the best a writing chronologically. Well when inspiration failed (and the plot bunnies deserted after making me be so cruel) I decided to go back in time for this drabble. It's set about six months after A light Cast in Shade, and about two years before A Brighter Shade of Blue. Sorry I'm so jumpy, and I hope you enjoy the start of this. Links to Seris Synopsis here

Ted Grantley sat in front of the ornate old dressing table mirror.

"You look beautiful" said a soft voice beside her.

Ted turned around startled.

"Peggy" she said, "You startled me."

"Well not nearly so much as you startled me, when I got the telegram! We may only have arrived yesterday but the change in Rix... It's indescribable."

Ted smiled softly, she had been worried about her Fiance's twin's reaction.

"Don't get me wrong" continued Peggy laughingly, "He's still an arrogant pig, but now it's in a nice way."

Ted giggled to at this strange, but completely accurate description of her husband to be.

"You'll be great tomorrow, I know. I'm just sad that I won't get to know you better because by the time you have honey-mooned we'll have to go back home. All I can wish for you is that you have an equally happy marriage as I have to Giles, and goodness knows, we had quite as rocky a start as you two!"

Ted grinned, Rix had entertained her with his twin's story one night. She had been quite shocked to hear it, having always been of the opinion that Peggy was very placid. But it seemed she had quite a fiery temper when roused.

"Oh you've heard the story have you? Is Rix spreading a bad name about us?"

"No" said Ted seriously, "He tries to, but he just can't insult you as well as he seems to be able to, to everyone else."

"Really?" said Peggy drily, "You clearly haven't heard us talking to each other. Now I will leave you to get some sleep, I don't want people blaming me if you come down the aisle tomorrow with dark circles under your eyes!"

With a final laugh, Peggy left, not realising how her light-hearted support had reassured Ted.

There was another knock on her door just as Ted finished getting changed into her nightclothes.

"It's just me. May I come in?" called Mollie Bettany, as Ted hastily flung on her dressing gown, over what was no doubt in Mollie's eyes a rather innapropriate nightdress.

"Of course." called back Ted, "I'm sorry, I was just getting ready for bed there, would you like me to get back up and help you with something?

"Don't be silly my dear." chuckled Mollie, in her Motherly yet strangely girlish way as she came in and perched on the bed, "I just came to wish you a goodnight and sweet dreams before the big day. I can't wait to welcome you to the family Ted darling. You have done wonders for my son, and I can never repay you."

"It's me that can never repay you" said Ted quietly, "You have all been so kind to me, much kinder and more generous than I could ever have imagined."

"It's only what a lovely girl like you deserves dear." said Mollie softly, for she knew Ted's home story, having heard Rix vent his temper on Ted's Mother one afternoon, when one of her letters had left Ted particuliarly down. "Now let me leave you to get your beauty sleep, though goodness knows you don't need any of it!"

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA"

Ted woke up with a jolt.

"Who the hell is that?" Was her first grumpy question.

"My, My Ted, bedhead really is not your style. Don't tell me you intend to wear your hair like that for the actual ceremony?"

Ted rubbed her eyes sleepily.

"Sorry, what?" she asked groggily, then as she opened her eyes up wider, "Ruhannah Richardson! It is not!"

"Is too." replied that young lady sophisticatedly.

"At this hour? This chirpy? What drugs?"

"Excuse me, that time with the weed was a one off, I don't like the suggestions you are making about my character!"

"Of course it was a one off! You started retching, you couldn't have tried it again if you wanted too."

"Hmphh." was the only reply this received.

There was a silence for a moment.

"You spent a lot of time on that outfit" observed Ted, as her eyes became accustomed to the light, "You look gorgeous."

"I dunno, I just threw it together." said Ruey carelessly.

"Uh huh" said Ted, although they both knew the reason for Ruey's sudden elegance.

She wondered how long it would take Ruey and David to work out that they were destined for each other. She hoped it would be soon.

"Okay" said Ruey, "Get up, get dressed- preferably in something that covers you up, get some breakfast and we'll discuss wedding hair strategy from there!"

Ruey retreated laughing, as Ted pulled her duvet up around her chin.

"Oh by the way" said Ruey, sticking her head back around the door, "Liz and Len and Con and Ros are here. Liz says all the boys are driving down for the ceremony", then with a slight grin, "You should have seen the glare she gave me when I asked if Rob was coming down!"

Smiling slightly, Ted pulled on her dressing gown and went for a bath. It was a warm one. Despite all her years of cold baths she felt that she deserved a nice warm bath on occasion, and in her opinion her wedding day certainly counted!

Thanks for all the lovely comments!

Thanks for all the nice comments. More Ted and Rix banter follows:

Ted fell into the steamy shower, and left feeling more like a human being.

In a few hours time she would find out whether or not her dream was going to come true and if she would actually get that happily ever after she craved for.

She re-entered her room, her hair caught up in a fluffy bath towel, and wearing a warm cotton robe.

"Rix" she exclaimed, dropping her night clothes on the floor.

"Yes?" he answered from his position on her bed.

"Your.. your.. not supposed to.."

"I'm not supposed to see the bride before the wedding, I know, I know." he sighed, "But really who invented such a stupid rule?"

Ted laughed despite herself.

"Well" she said sternly, "You are NOT seeing me in my dress before the wedding, alright?"

"Does that mean I get to see you out of your dress before the wedding?" he asked mischievously, his eyes resting on her loosely tied robe.

"Rix!" she exclaimed.

"What?" he asked innocently.

"Sit down." he said in his normal voice.

She came and sat down beside him.

"I'm sorry." he said. "I just had to make sure you were still here, you know." he turned away from her as he said this.

"Oh Rix." said Ted softening immediately, "Of course I'm here, and I always will be."

"Promise?" he said.

"Isn't that what we are doing today?" she teased.

"Ted." he said, deadly serious.

"Okay" she said, "I'm sorry. I promise, with all my heart and love, that I will always be here for you, when you need me, and even when you don't."

"Thanks" said Rix smiling softly. "Guess what?"

"What?" asked Ted slightly bewildered.

"We are getting married today!" and with that he lifted her off the bed and swung her around the room.

"Your crazy" laughed Ted.

"And... your point is...?"

Sorry, RL if is a bit busy at the moment. I hope you all enjoy.

Ted walked sedately down the big front staircase of the Quadrant.

"You can tell it's her wedding day can't you, she's glowing already!" exclaimed Mollie, pulling her into an embrace, before she had even reached the bottom of the stairs.

"Mum!" exclaimed Bride Carrington, "Give her a moment to breathe! She is right Ted though, you look so beautiful even in your bathrobe."

"Well she could hardly traipse down the stairs for breakfast in her wedding gown could she?" pointed out Len sensibly, and alerting Ted to the girl's prescence.

"Mrs Entwhistle." she said seriously, apart from a slight twitch of her lips.

"Mrs Bettany." replied Len, her eyes twinkling.

Ted let out a high-pitched nervous giggle at this.

Grinning, the two girls hugged closely.

"My turn" announced Con, interrupting calmly.

"Con" exclaimed Ted, "You look stunning!"

Con's short hair was in tight ringlets, and her eyes sparkled with fun, as Ted took in her tight and well cut black suit, with the short skirt, stilletto heels, and low-cut jade silky blouse.

"I'm a London girl now." she said apologetically.

Her outfit was certainly different to Len's, who was wearing a lemon coloured cardigan with a fitted white blouse, tucked into a loose white skirt, with a wide lemon belt.

Rosamund came forward next. The two girls also hugged tightly, although little was said. They had been close friedns in school, though Rosamund had left a year earlier. She was now a succesful gardener, owning a small landscaping company.

Her hair was back in a thick plait, and she was wearing a comfortable-looking, hand knitted jumper over a loose, bright blue dress.

"Don't forget Liz." said Ruey reprovingly, dragging the shy girl forward.

"Hello sis." said Ted smiling, as she adopted the term Rix always used when talking about her. "I'm so proud of you. Top of your year, already!" she said grinning proudly.

"Only of the girls" said Liz looking embarassed.

"I don't care! You are the smartest cookie I know, and I shall continue to tell everyone that. I think Rix is upstairs, if you want to see him. Make sure he doesn't come downstairs!"

Once Liz had left, Con asked curiously, "Who is she?"

"She's Liz, a good friend from work, and Rix practically adopted her as a little sister. He's lovely to her, even if he is obnoxious to the rest of us!"

"Look at the time" screeched Ruey suddenly, making them all jump.

"What?" she complained, "It's after nine!"

They all looked at Ted and her bed-head in horror, and everyone missed Ruey's suddenly white face.

"David" shrieked Ted, "I thought you were going to be late."

"No, I could hardly miss the chance to see Rix settle down.", he kissed her warmly on the cheek.

Con and Len exchanged glances, Rosamund looked blank, just sensing an undercurrent of distress somewhere.

"Con, Len" he greeted his cousins. "How are Aunt Jo and Uncle Jack?"

"They are fine, they wanted to come out for the ceremony but Papa was tied-up at work." Len replied.

"That's a shame." said David," It would have been nice to see them again, I haven't seen them since your wedding Len."

Woops, thought Ted, taboo subject, glancing at Ruey.

"And who is this young lady?" asked David smiling at Rosamund.

"I'm Ros" replied Rosamund.

"Gardener extraordianire." added Con, stalling for time.

Ros nodded modestly.

"Hi David" said Ruey, interrupting the silence which had been threatening to engulf them.

"Ruey," said David, "How good to see you again. You look... beautiful."

Ted, Len and Con exhanged looks.

"Thank you " said Ruey, calmly, "How are you enjoying your work?"

"It's good."

"Good."

"What's going on?" whispered Rosamund into Len's ear.

Len just shook her head.

"David" interrupted Ted, "Why don't you go upstairs. Rix is floating about somewhere."

"Of course. Don't worry, i'll make sure he's waiting at the alter for you."

Once he had gone Ruey collapsed into a chair.

"I thought I was finished with him." she whispered more to herself than anyone else.

"Look at my hands!" she said holding out the offending hands. They were shaking.

"It'll be okay." said Con gently. "Come on, just now we have to transform Ted into a beauty."

Ruey grinned, "Of course, we can't have bed-head here walking up the altar like that."

and if her laughter didn't quite reach her eyes no one said anyting.

"It's not that bad is it?" asked Ted gingerly, choosing to change the subject.

"Well..." said Ros kindly, before trailing off.

"It is quite big..." admitted Len.

"And you do have a bit of black gunk under your eyes" added Con.

"But you don't have any spots." finshed Ruey chirpily, "Well not apart from the little one beside your nose..."

"But we can fix all that" assured Con.

Sorry it's been so long. I have been awfully busy recently. Well, here it is...

"Little sis!" exclaimed Rix, as Liz shyly walked around the door.

He put on a bright smile for her benefit.

"What were you two talking about?" asked Liz, aware that the conversation between the two cousins had suddenly stopped as they heard her approach.

Rix and David exchanged glances.

"Nerves" admitted Rix.

Liz smiled. "You two are perfect together, and she's glwing downstairs. You don't need to worry about anything."

She placed a re-assuring hand on his shoulders.

Rix resisted the temptation to heave.

"Who's that arriving?" asked David turning away from the window, hoping Liz wouldn't realise how white he was. Rix wasn't the only one suffering from nerves. This was the first time her had seen Her since...

Rix peered out of the window, in an attempt to focus his mind on something, anything, other than what would be happening in the next few hours.

"It's the chefs." he announced, as the rickety, rusty car pulled up in the spacious drive.

It was Liz's turn to feel slightly sick.

"Liz.." he started.

"Don't start Rix." she said, before he could finish.

His mouth was left hanging open in a rather good imitation of a startled fish.

"Has he not asked you out yet then?" asked David with interest.

"Aaargghhhmmm." was all Liz managed in reply to this.

"Oh" said David.

"I DO NOT LIKE ROB, HE DOES NOT LIKE ME! WE ARE FRIENDS NOTHING MORE. WE HAVE NEVER BEEN ANYTHING MORE, OR ANYTHING LESS. CAN NONE OF YOU GET THAT INTO YOUR TINY HEADS?"

She turned around flushed, "Oh... Rob..."

Eventually, I have updated this! Sorry it's been so long. Warning: slight soppiness ahead!

Her hair brushed out, and some mysterious concoction of Con's rubbed through her hair, Ted sat ,momentarily alone, staring out of the window at the overgrown gardens surrounding the Quadrant.

It was a run down house, for all its large grandeur. But Ted often thought she had never seen somewhere more appealing. It was a family house definitely, and some of that love and laughter from over the years seemed to have been sealed into the walls. It was the perfect place for a wedding to take place.

"How are you love?" asked Mollie Bettany, in her most motherly tones. As she appeared from the next room, where the sounds of girlish laughter could be heard.

Ted turned around with a shy smile.

Mollie sat down beside her, taking one of Ted's young hands, in her own lined one.

"I was nervous too." she admitted, "I know you probably can't imagine me as a young girl, but I was barely nineteen when I married. I was lucky though I have never regretted a moment of my life with Dick."

Ted smiled, still quiet.

"My parents weren't very happy about the marriage. Father was Dick's boss, and I was seen as marrying below my station. Mother especially hated it. They came around eventually though." here she gave Ted's hand a light squeeze. "And Dick helped me through to, he was, well, an absolute brick for lack of a better word."

Now she turned towards Ted.

"I know I'm no substitute for the real thing dear, and like all Mother's I have made my mistakes, but if I can ever help you, please please don't hesitate to ever ask. Today you become another of my daughters."

Impulsively Ted hugged Mollie, this impossibly warm, loving Mother-ish figure. Turning away she impatiently wiped the eyes that suddenly threatened to become weepy.

"I don't like him." said Ruey decisively, to her friends as they sat together in the little room adjoining Ted's bedroom of the last week.

The girls exchanged glances.

"who?" ventured Ros timidly.

"I don't want to talk about it." snapped Ruey. Then after a short pause, "I mean who does he think he is waltzing in here and telling me I look beautiful. I mean just because me and Meg spent about three hours on my hair, and three weeks shopping, what right does he have to throw me off balance like that?"

"So you do still like him a bit then." asked Con hopefully.

"No! And I said I don't want to talk about. I mean if Iwant to talk about the fact that he still makes me feel weak at the knees I would."

Len bit her lip to supress a smile. "Whats going on?" mouthed Rosamund, looking decididly confused.

"Why don't you just tell him you still like him then?" asked Len sensibly.

Ruey looked at her uncomprehendingly. "What? No. I mean why would I do that? Anyway I don't want to talk about it! Oh my God!" she tailed off suddenly.

The others all turned around to see what she was staring at.

"Oh Ted!" they gasped, almost in unision.

"You look beautiful." sighed Len.

Ted stood before them smiling shyly. Her long straight hair had been waved by the girls earlier that morning, and fell softly past her shoulders. Her dress was plain white satin, but the simple cut somehow managed to show off all of Ted's beauty perfectly, and as she giggled nervously they were all well aware of the glow that seemed to be radiating from her.
