She smoothed down her white dress, for once nervous. They had been true to each other all these long years, and at last they would be joined together in the sight of God and of their friends. At last they would have their reward.

Through the door she could hear the murmur of the many people waiting for her, and thought only of the one person who would be waiting at the front.

"Shall we begin?" the priest asked the woman. Hilda nodded, and was led through to where Nell was waiting, to sign with her the London partnership register.
