“Don’t go into Hall today. The ceiling is unsafe, and could collapse at any moment! But don’t worry, it isn’t as bad as it sounds. However, anybody who went in there would risk being crushed, so please obey me. I know I can trust all of you girls.” And Miss Annersley left the cramped Inter V common room which she had managed to squeeze all the seniors into.
Con woke up with a crash. Something was rumbling and crashing very loudly, and she was scared. Fortunately, she could hear someone moving towards the light switch, and she knew the other girls were awake too.
“What’s happening?” she heard someone stammer. She guessed it was Ricki Fry, but she wasn’t sure. Then she heard the door open, and someone came in.
“Don’t be alarmed, girls,” said Len’s unmistakable voice, and Con was reassured. “The ceiling of Hall has crumbled slightly, but no-one was in there, and everyone is okay. Miss Annersley said to try and get some sleep.” Len shut the door, and turned off the light on her way out. Con pulled her covers over her, and groaned. The dreams she’d been having were making her feel awful. They seemed to give her a pain in her stomach, unlike any normal ache or pain that she had experienced.
‘I could have warned them,’ she thought to herself as she lay still. ‘I could have stopped it from happening if I had warned them. I could have stopped the fire, and the flood in the bathroom too. What am I going to do?’ She rolled over. She didn’t dare sleep again that night, she was too worried about what her dreams might reveal.

Margot had been overexcited that day, with all the business of Hall’s ceiling falling down. It was no wonder that she was finding it hard to sleep. All around her she could hear the deep breathing of her dormitory roommates, and envied them. She was staring at the ceiling, reliving a funny scene that had happened in Geography earlier that day, when Con came in.
“Margot,” said Con, and Margot was startled at how scared she looked. “Please come with me. I think something is wrong with Miss Annersley.” Margot was too astonished to ask any questions; she pulled on her dressing gown and followed Con out of the room and over to the wing where Miss Annersley slept. Margot was nervous about entering the room, but Con, after knocking and receiving no reply, entered quickly, and went straight to Miss Annersley. She checked to see if she was breathing, and was quite sure that she wasn’t. She told Margot to run and get Matron, whilst she herself was going to try and resuscitate her. She did some chest compressions, and was about to try mouth-to-mouth when Matron came in. After checking Miss Annersley, she announced that she was breathing, but very shallowly, and sent Margot to get Rosalie to phone the San.
“You’ve done well Con. I believe you may well have saved Miss Annersley’s life. Now, go to bed, and I’ll bring you something to help you sleep once your father has come to help Miss Annersley. However, Con was suddenly overwhelmed with sleepiness, and barely managed to get back to her dormitory. When Matron came in twenty minutes later, Con was as fast asleep as all the other girls in the dormitory.

The next day, the triplets were going to Freudesheim for the day, because it was a Saturday. Miss Annersley had not even been admitted to the San., and she was recovering rapidly back at the Chalet School.
Jack noticed the deep purple shadows under Con’s eyes, but he assumed it was because she had been up in the previous night.
“Mama,” said Con, when she was helping Joey sort some proofs into order. “Have we ever had any Margots in the family other than our Margot?” Joey looked at Con.
“No, Con,” she replied. “Why do you ask? Oh, sorry, we did have one Margot, Margot Venables. She was Uncle Jem’s sister, and mother of Daisy and Primula. I don’t think you’ve met Primula recently, but you know Daisy Rosomon, don’t you? In fact, Margot was sort of named after Margot Venables, for Daisy was very upset by her death.” Con nodded, and left with the excuse that she was going to the toilet. However, she went to lie on her bed, and hoped she would fall to sleep soon. After a few minutes, sleep washed over her, and she found herself in the same sort of dream she had been in last night after helping Miss Annersley.
“Margot!” she said. “Margot Venables! We are related!” Margot nodded.
“Yes, I already told you that, didn’t I? Anyway, remember what I warned you about last night, it will happen in two days time. Remember that Con. You trust me, don’t you?” Con nodded, and found herself awake again, sitting upright in the bed.
She scribbled the name ‘Margot Venables’ on a piece of paper, and left the room to eat a meal before returning to school.
“I’m going to start taking notice,” she said to herself. “And I’m going to help people from now on, and not ignore things that I know are true.” And with this resolve, she returned to school.

Curiouser and curiouser..

#16:  Author: CeciliaLocation: Brum PostPosted: Sun Apr 10, 2005 5:29 pm

Back at school, things were different for Con. No-one at the Chalet School could have been accused of bullying or being mean, and in fact, most of the girls didn’t even realise they were doing it. But wherever Con Maynard went, the crowd dispersed. If Con went into the common room, it would be sure that within five minutes most of the girls would have decided to pursue outdoor activities, or practise the piano, or, in fact, anything to get out of the common room. It wasn’t that they didn’t like Con, she had always been popular in her own quiet way. In fact, if asked, nobody could explain why they were moving away from her, why they suddenly felt the need to get away from Con. Len and Margot never experienced such feelings, and were often with Con. Len hadn’t noticed anything happening, but Margot had, and often wondered why it was that she didn’t mind being with someone who was surely cursed, or something similar. Con had noticed people moving away from her, but she didn’t care. It gave her more time to think.
Sitting alone in the common room one day, she settled at a table with pen and paper to hand, and wrote two words ‘The Talisman’. She was about to start the poem that had been floating around in her head, when she suddenly reached into her pocket for the locket that she had been given for her birthday last year. All three of the triplets had been given a small piece of pretty jewellery, but Con liked hers the most. She felt something special about it, and it almost seemed to move when she caught it in her hands.
‘This is my talisman’, she thought to herself. And it burnt her hands so suddenly and severely that she cried out. She was glad no-one saw what happened next.

You can't leave it there! Please tell us what happened!

#20:  Author: CeciliaLocation: Brum PostPosted: Mon Apr 11, 2005 8:31 pm

Oh dear! I feel rather inadequate reading these pleas for what happens next! *reads through the boring story* Oh well! I'm not rewriting it now! Thing is, I can never keep it serious for long...

She decided to prise open the locket again, something which she had only managed once before. There was a small picture inside the locket of a lady that Con did not recognise. But she had been struck with a sudden thought that maybe the lady was Margot, the Margot who had been appearing to her in dreams. She got her penknife out of her pocket, and set to work to carefully prise it open. An enormous cloud of dust flew out, and she coughed, waiting for it to disperse. Instead of dispersing, however, it got bigger, and began to take shape. Then her sister Margot ran into the room, and the cloud of dust turned back into a cloud just in time
“Margot!” Con exclaimed. She nodded.
“Con, you’ve got to go! Len is in trouble in the library!”
“The library is locked!” she said, frowning. Then she remembered her resolve. Even though this wasn’t a dream, she had said she was going to help people.
“I’m on my way.” Con shut the locket. Then she opened it again, and the dust came out and turned into Margot.
“What?” she said.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know you were going to come out! Anyway, Len’s in trouble!” Margot the ghost shook her head.
“No she –” Con shut the locket, swallowing the ghost dashed off to library and see what was happening. She ran straight down the curiously empty corridors, but not even stopping to think she carried on towards the library. Then she paused.
‘It was pure luck that Margot didn’t see the other Margot. She wouldn’t know what to think. You never know what might happen if they found out about me.’ By the time that thought had gone through her head, Con was at the library door.
She turned the door handle, and found it was locked.
“Len! Len!” she shouted, banging on the door as hard as she could. Then she stopped, and listened. She heard the faintest moan, and began to bang again. With one extra hard bang, the door fell through. Len was sitting on her hands on the floor in the corner.
“Con!” she croaked. “Come here!” Con made her way quickly over, and tripped over a string that had been stretched from one bookcase to the next. One of those nets that people try and catch wild animals in fell over her head. She was trapped. Cautiously, Miss Annersley, Miss Ferrars and various other teachers emerged from behind certain shelves.
“Now then, Con,” said Miss Annersley. “No need to worry, but we know your secret, and we need to help you.” Con began to cry.
“What secret?” she said between sobs.
“I think you know that Con. There have been other witches in your family, but none as bad as you. Nothing bad is going to happen, so don’t worry!” But Con was worrying. Why did they have to catch her? She wasn’t a witch anyway; it was just a little bit of seeing the future. It was Margot who told her things anyway, it wasn’t as if she knew them magically.
“We need all the things from your pockets, Con, just in case.” Con reached into her pockets and handed over her penknife and purse. She felt around a bit more and realised the terrible truth- her brooch was gone, and she was all alone. Then she opened her eyes. Len was still sitting on the floor in the corner, and Con could see a head briefly peek from behind a shelf.
‘That was the future!’ thought to herself, and fingered the locket in her pocket nervously. ‘Thank you Margot!’ Then Con struck on the perfect excuse.
“Oh no, Len! Do you need help?” And Con lurched forward and did the worst pretend faint ever. She lay still, thinking she could pretend to be fully unconscious. Then she would be brought to the San perhaps, and she could see her father! So Con lay still.
“Con?” she heard Miss Annersley say nervously. Then,
“She’s unconscious, I think. Maybe it was because she thought Len was in trouble, I don’t know. Con, get up if you’re all right!” That was Miss Ferrars, Con knew. She kept as quiet as she could. “She seems dead to the world. Okay, well that makes everything easier.” And Con felt four hands close round her and lift her up. She didn’t dare open her eyes to see what was happening, but she was terrified all the same. She felt them reach into her pockets, and knew they were following the same process as in the dream. Then Con had a sudden burst of inspiration. She opened her eyes.
“What happened?” she said.
“You fainted,” said Miss Ferrars. “So we’re taking you up to have a lie down, okay?” Con nodded humbly.
“Can I see if I can walk?” she asked. The mistresses exchanged glances, and decided that she could. After all, Con had no idea of what they were doing. They placed her down, and Con followed along behind them. Then suddenly, she bolted. Con ran for her life down the corridors of the Chalet School, until she found herself by the front entrance. Taking a deep breath, she opened the door, and ran as fast as her legs would carry her. She ran for miles and miles, until she knew she was safe for the time being.
In Freudesheim, the phone rang. Joey put down the book she was reading, and went to answer it, deciding to give Anna a break.
“Hello?” she said.
“Joey?” She heard Hilda’s voice. “It’s Hilda. There’s been some bad news. Con’s on the run.”

I've never been chanted before... Well, if you insist! Laughing Laughing

In fact, Con wasn’t running anywhere. She was lying on the floor, suffering from what she thought must be a mild asthma attack, even though this was an illness she wasn’t afflicted with. She had squeezed herself between two bushes and a wall, and was desperately trying to convince herself that she would run away forever and never be found. However, in the back of her mind, she knew that no one could ever run away from the Chalet School successfully. It had just never been done.
“However,” she said aloud. “If I really managed to get out of Switzerland, they wouldn’t find me for a long, long time.” Half-delirious, she stood up, and managed to walk for another ten minutes before deciding that she had better rest first. She reached into her pocket to pick out the brooch, and found it was gone. After checking all her pockets three times, she decided that it really was gone.
“It isn’t gone, Con!” said a voice from behind her. There was Margot holding out the bracelet. “I just thought it might need a bit of protecting, so I nabbed it for you. Remember only you can see me, after all.” Con thought about this, but then Margot spoke again.
“So, now you’ve sort of got used to me being around, I have to tell you something. There is a reason I only appear to you. And there is a reason why it’s you; it isn’t just a random thing. But, I’m finding it hard to-“
“They’re coming!” said Con, in a scared whisper that steadily got loudly. “They’re coming and I’m right here! What am I going to do?”
“You’ll be fine, touch me.” Con hesitantly reached out and touched Margot’s hand. Suddenly, they weren’t in between the two bushes and wall where Con had been hiding, they were somewhere quite different. And that was when Con got her horrible surprise.

Edited because the locket magically turned into a brooch between posts!

Edited as had posted twice - very confusing! Laughing Lesley the Mod.

Thank you Lesley!

“Why are we here?” said Con. “Why here?” And Margot smiled at her.
“Because I’m trying to find out why it’s you. Look Con, I have to know, and this is the only way to find out. The people chasing you can’t find you, and it gives me a chance to find out what I need to know!” Con sighed.
“But why did it have to be here? This is one of the few things in my life that only I know about, and I’d like to keep it that way!”
“Not even Joey?” said Margot sceptically. From what she had seen back on earth Joey knew everything.
“Mamma?” queried Con. “No. Just me. Okay?” Margot decided to ignore her. She poked the wall, which crumbled precariously.
“Careful!” said Con.
“Okay, I get it!” said Margot, finally realising what had happened. “You may as well tell me the full story now, Con, I know enough!”
“Fine,” said Con, frowning. Margot was impossible to argue with. “I was on a walk with school. No one had partnered me and I was feeling as if nobody liked me. So I was wandering at the back on my own. I think I was making up a poem, I can’t really remember. But anyway, suddenly we went past this cave, and I’ve never seen it again since then. But I was feeling rebellious, so I went inside. At first, I was just meaning to peek, you know? But then, I saw this amazing thing…” Con’s voice went quiet, and turned into a whisper, as if she was remembering something really amazing. “They were having their picnic right outside, so I knew I could stay in and no-one would miss me. We were with all the fourth forms, you see. That cave was the most amazing place I’ve ever been to. The walls seemed to be made of glitter, and there were people in there. The People, as they said.”
“What were they, Con?” said Margot, urgently. “This is the bit I need!”
“They were sprites. Fairies and elves, all glittering and colourful and dancing. It was the best day I ever had, and I didn’t want to have to share it with anyone. They spoke to me, and they told me things. I don’t remember what, it was just things about them. I was entranced, and ever since then I’ve always looked out for that cave, but never found it. It was definitely the best day ever, and as I said, I wanted it for myself. But you’ve ruined that now, haven’t you?” Con said.
“It doesn’t matter anymore. I’ll have forgotten about it in a few days. I know why this is happening Con. And you aren’t a witch, unlike certain members of your family who will remain anonymous.” And Margot coughed a cough that sounded distinctly like the word Joey. “It’s because-“
“Con? Con?” Bangs were resounding off the walls as people called her name.
“Oh, yes,” said Con slowly. “And this is what happened after the fairies went.” As if in slow motion, a huge chunk of rock fell from the ceiling. It landed on Margot. Con had previously thought that she was hollow, that things would go right through her, the way ghosts should be, but she didn’t like the way Margot fell to the floor.

“Loo loo, loo loo loo. Loo loo, loo loo loo!” intoned Margot, who wasn’t dead at all, or even injured. She had simply stood up, remarked that the impact had been very forceful, and then carried on with her explanation.
“I didn’t think a ghost could be so annoying!” remarked Con, after Margot had been chanting for five minutes.
“Well, trust me, they can!” said Margot sharply. “However I am a spirit, which is a totally different thing!”
“Great,” said Con. “But what are you doing?” Margot swivelled round.
“I am simply,
Calling the elements of the Earth,
Renewing the rights bestowed at birth.
Accessing the power divine,
Gathering ancients and making them mine.” Margot took a bow.
“Clever, huh? I made it up on the spot too.” Con groaned.
“Great. I need to know, Margot, what are we going to do? To stop them catching me and accusing me of being a witch. To stop everything, and make it all right again. You have to help me Margot!”
“Stop everything. Well, not everything, but it could be arranged. Leave it to me. Are you happy staying here? No one can come in, because we’re in your memory!” After ten minutes grumbling, Con agreed to stay, and Margot spent her evening and night contacting four grumpy warlocks and a handful of goblins.

And this bit sort of ends the mystery... Hoever, I am going to continue this story, that's just like the end of the first part sort of thing. Anyway, here it is.
An assorted crowd was gathered outside the Chalet School that night. After giving up the search, Miss Annersley and her crew had given up searching for Con, and returned to the school, confident that Con wouldn’t be coming back. But Margot had something organised, and she needed Con’s help.
“Look, Warlocks!” she was hissing at them. “I don’t care how much you need the toilet, I need your help, and I need your powers!” Then she turned to Con. “Warlocks are officially the creatures that complain the most in the world. Closely followed by humans, of course. But the reason we need warlocks is because they are also some of the most powerful creatures on the planet, and one of two species that can turn back time.”
“What is the other species?” asked Con.
“Seahorses,” replied Margot. “But they can’t survive without water, so they’ve led us to believe. Anyway, we are going to turn back time, because I know what made you have these dreams, even though I’ve never got round to telling you. When we turn back time, things will happen slightly differently, and you won’t even remember that any of this happened. Neither will anyone else, simply because when you go back it won’t have happened. Oh, and off the record, because I know you’ve been wondering, it was nothing to do with the fairies. They were just, erm… hallucinations. A figment of the mind. All poets have them.”
“Really?” said Con.
“Of course, darling!” said Margot in a way which meant of course not. Then the warlocks began to grumble very loudly.
“Oh, look Con, they’re ready! Go for it, Warlocks!” And the warlocks span round chanting and screaming and whistling and dancing in a whirl of colour. And then everything turned black.
“Picnic today!” said Margot Maynard, when she woke up in the morning,
“I know! Is it nice out?” called Con.
“It’s lovely! It’s the perfect day!” All the girls hurried out of bed, and got ready in record time. After Fruhstuck, which was a rather hurried meal, the girls put on their walking clothes and got into partners. All the fourth forms were walking to the spot where they were going to eat together, but that was an odd number, and Con found herself without a partner. Having woken up in a black mood, Con decided she couldn’t contain herself any longer, and walked along at the back in a stormy silence which stopped the people in front of her from turning back to talk. They reached the picnic spot after an hours walk, and Con noticed a cave she hadn’t seen before hidden in the wall. She poked her head through to look in, and struck with a sudden rebellious idea, entered the cave. She had noticed a little well trickling. She reached into her pocket, and brought out the locket she had been given as a birthday present.
“I hate this locket as much as I hate all the others!” she said aloud. She looked at the locket one last time, then dropped it into the well. Twenty two seconds later, there was a splash.
“Gone forever now,” she muttered, and with a last peer down the well, she walked out of the cave.

It's not exactly a continuation of that story but it's sort of a sequel... Here it is anyway!

“I never noticed how blue the sky could be,’ said Con Maynard, and that was when a meteor fell down and struck her and killed her.”
“Killed her?” gasped a little girl by the name of Claire Saunders.
“Well, it isn’t true anyway, it’s just like a school legend, I suppose.” Heather Clarke shrugged, and informed them it was the last story for the day. Heather was one of the most popular girls at the Chalet School, well known for having all the facts of the schools’ past, and repeating them whenever she had an audience. “Come on, we have to get ready for the walk.” All the members of Upper Third A ran up the back stairs and got changed for the walk. Heather paused for a moment as she entered her cubicle, she could have sworn she saw a girl with long dark hair walking out of the cubicle as she went into it.
‘But that’s not possible,’ she thought to herself, and with a shrug of her shoulders (a habit that Matron disliked very much) she changed and walked out of the dormitory with the others, laughing and chattering. By the time they were all in bed, she had practically forgotten the incident. But when she fell asleep, the figure was back. She wasn’t scared by the ghost, or spirit, or whatever it was. She was just interested, and sat observing it. She woke up with a jolt. The figure was still moving around. After sitting with her heart racing for a few minutes, she took action. The figure was facing away from her, so she quietly slipped out of bed and tiptoed towards the figure. Then, using the last of her courage, she reached out and touched the figure.
The ghastly thing spun round, and Heather was horrified at the white face and angry expression.
“I used to live here,” said the girl sadly, and disappeared into the night.
