#1: Sybil's New Life Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Sun Jul 17, 2005 3:16 pm

Sybil has just started to dictate this to me. I think it's a short piece.

Sybil Lyall looked round the newly-decorated drawing room of her new home in London. It looked wonderful, just as she wanted it. Hugh had given her a free hand with the decoration and a generous budget to do it with, so she was very happy with the result.

She paused for a moment, thinking of how much her life had changed in the past year. She knew how lucky she was to have a husband like Hugh, kind, thoughtful, generous, considerate. She loved him more than ever, if that was possible.

With his encouragement, she had added interior design classes to her work at the Needlework School, and this beautiful room was the result. Hugh would be thrilled with it. Life seemed so much bigger and freer here, away from the confines of her family. She had made friends with girls who were on the same course as she was, and it was inspiring to be able to discuss designs and techniques with them. One of the first places that she had dragged Hugh to was the V & A, another source of inspiration for her work. Oh, London was wonderful, and living in this house was wonderful too.

The house had already been divided up before they bought it, so Charles was living in the flat in the top storey, so she never felt alone. That was another good thing. She had felt so alone when she was living at home, always having to put her own wishes aside to conform to what Mother and Father wanted and expected from their daughters. Now she was mistress of her own home, a wonderful sensation.

Hugh's business was thriving. He wasn't just buying up properties to renovate and sell on, he was also buying things such as old warehouses in the East End to turn them into apartments at affordable prices so young couples could get mortgages to be able to start out life in decent surroundings. She was glad that he was doing that. It made her own happiness deeper to know that the good fortune was being shared with other young people.

She had heard the bad news from Australia. Andrea Newsome, someone she had known in Melbourne had bumped into her. They had gone for a cup of coffee together, and Andrea had tactfully broken the news to her that her mother had been admitted to a private clinic for treatment for alcoholism. It was about time, Sybil though wrily. Then the surprise. Josette had broken off her engagement to John, which had apparently been another nine days' wonder for the gossips. And Josette had left Australia, flown to England, then gone to work for the Lucys for the summer, helping out with their tribe of children and cousins. After that she was coming to London, to do a degree at LSE. Apparently their father was coping quite well by himself, and earning a good reputation for the work that he was doing to treat TB out in Australia.

Sybil sat down and began to think. She didn't want to see or hear from her mother again, not after the nightmare that she had made of the wedding preparations, but Daddy, well he had shown some understanding on her wedding day, had even apologised and supported her against her mother's interference. And Sybil was feeling slightly ashamed of the way she had treated Josette on the morning of her wedding.

It wouldn't do any harm to write a short letter to her father, and to try to find out where Josette was going to be living. Well, it might be better to discuss it with Hugh first, but she would definitely mention it to him. she wasn't going to assume that she was right, just because she was married. No, what she and Hugh had was a real partnership, and that wouldn't, couldn't flourish if she did things without him knowing about them.

She looked at her watch. Oops, time to get going, or she'd be late for her class.

This is looking good already. How nice to see Sybil happy, and the reaction to the way Jem and Josette have changed things too.

Yay! Thanks for bringing Sybil back. I always had a certain sympathy for her.

That's nice to see - Sybil comes across as very thoughtful here, willing to forgive, at least as far as Jem and Josette are concerned - I think she will get on well with the new Josette.

This looks interesting - I've always wanted to see what might have happened if Sybil had been allowed to go to the School of Needlwork in the first place, instead of being spirited off to Australia when her parents went there.

Elder - did you read the prequel to this? It's in the archives. It relates what happened on Sybil's wedding day - I'd really recommend it. 'Sybil's Revenge.'

Thanks, Lesley - I have indeed read it - before I started 'Josette' and loved it. I also enjoyed Josette, and am now enjoying watching Joey come to terms with her re-ordered life.

I was about to respond to this earlier, but my system decided to freeze me out, for only the third time today already! We've had a lot of thunder around, which plays havoc with our Internet connections. But I'm looking forward to more of this anyway!

That evening after dinner, Sybil broached the subject of contacting her family. Hugh looked at her carefully before replying.

'I'd never wanted to have to say this to you. Now, I suppose I shall have to. I never liked your mother, she always disapproved of me. If I was ever alone with her, she always made snide remarks about money, hinting that that was the attraction for you. It cast a horrible doubt in my mind, until I realised that you did love me and want to be with me. And, I have to say this, the way that she treated you on our wedding day was the end, for me at least. Your father was a bit better. At least, once he'd realised how much he'd hurt you, he apologised, and he did his best to protect you on the day. As for Josette, I suppose you can't have your sister living in the same city, and not have some contact with her. I'm not going to say 'No', but I do want a bit more time to think about it. And there's another thing. I grew up in Melbourne, I still know a lot of people out there. How much did Andrea tell you?'

'Well, it was just an outline, really. She didn't go into detail, just gave me the information. She was quite rushed, had a lot of shopping to do, so there wasn't all that much time to go into detail.'

'It's not that I want to play the heavy husband, Sybil, making your decisions for you. But I'm not going to let any of them hurt you again, not if I can help it. What I can do is phone a few old friends and see how things are. When we know that, then we'll make the decision together. How's that?'

'That would be fine. I just wish that I'd had the chance to make real friends out there, people I could rely on, well, obviously I don't mean you, darling, but it would have been so nice to have had girlfriends, not just been allowed to meet 'suitable' people.'

'Give me some time to make the calls, then we'll decide together. Don't forget, we could always spend some time in Guernsey, we could manage a long weekend out there if you want to see Josette again.'

Then he changed the subject.

'You know the old warehouses that I'm converting into flats that young people can afford? Well, I want your opinion about them. I was hoping that you can spare some time to help me with the layout and the design of the kitchens. And I'll definitely need some help with the decorating. I want whoever buys these flats to be able to move into them without wanting or needing to change anything.'

'Are you sure, Hugh? I'm still just learning.'

'After seeing the wonderful job that you're making of this house, Yes, I definitely want you to help me. You have no idea what weird ideas some of these people have. I don't think that they have any idea about how people really live.'

Sybil giggled at that. She had looked at the work of several designers before deciding to do her own designs for their house. Some of the ideas had been really difficult to understand. Yes, things needed to look good, but comfort was high on her list of priorities.

They spent the rest of the evening chatting. As she climbed the stairs to bed, Sybil had never felt happier. She had a husband she loved more each day, and a wonderful life learning the skills that she had longed to acquire. And now Hugh wanted her to be involved in creating homes for other people. This was much better than being busy in the Aunt Jo sense.

A few days later, Hugh quietly came into Sybil's workroom. She was absorbed in her work and didn't notice him for a few minutes. He looked at her, revelling in her beauty and the look of contentment on her face.

She looked up and saw him, her face breaking into a delighted smile.
'Hugh, you're home early, I wasn't expecting you yet.'

'Well, I hope you're pleased to see me.' he teased.

'Oh I am, it's just that I was involved in the design for this Jacobean piece that I have to do. It's quite complex, and the colours are going to be difficult to get exactly right.'

'I'm sure that you'll manage to do it as well as you managed the other pieces that you've done. Why I came home early is that I've had some news from Australia. Some of it's good, some bad.'

'Well, tell me then.'

Hugh gave her the news that he had gleaned from his friends: Lady Russell's admission to hospital for treatment; Josette's engagement being broken off; Jem coping with everything. Then he added that Ailie and the twins were also spending the summer in Guernsey. What he didn't tell her was that Madge Russell's drinking had been the subject of much talk in Melbourne's drawing rooms and that John, the ex-fiance, was being treated as a rotter for behaving as he had to Josette.

Sybil looked sad and then thoughtful. It was clear to Hugh that his wife was downcast by the news, so he decided to cheer her up a little.

'Look, you know the Lucys address, don't you? Why don't you drop Mrs Lucy a line to say that we might be going out to Guernsey for a few days? That would test the waters nicely. Then, if the response is good, we can go over there. Even if Josette isn't keen on seeing you again, there are still Ailie and the twins. I'd like to meet the rest of your family.'

Then his voice grew gentle. 'I don't want you to feel that you have to cut yourself off from your brothers and sisters, you know. But I don't want you to feel pressured into anything, either.'

Sybil suddenly grinned at him. 'Well, if you want to meet someone who's always up to all kinds of trick, you've chosen the right person in Ailie.'

Sybil stood by the post-box, still in two minds whether to post the letters.

One was to Janie Lucy, telling her that she and Hugh were planning to spend a few days in Guernsey, and asking if they might call, the other was to her father in Melbourne.

From the information that Hugh had managed to gather from his friends, her mother was still in the Clinic, but still refusing to allow her father to visit. Sybil had always thought that her father and mother were of one mind about everything, but now she was beginning to question that. Had her mother's drinking led her father to agree to everything that Madge had said, just to stop the sound of her voice nagging on?

She took a deep breath, then posted the letters. It would be at least a week before she expected to hear anything from Guernsey, and three weeks or more before a reply could come from Melbourne. She had plenty to do to occupy herself to take her mind off her worries. There was her theory work and two pieces of practical work to do in the meantime, and Hugh was going to bring the plans for the apartments home this evening. Charles was coming for dinner, so there would be three of them to pool ideas about how these new homes should be laid out and decorated.

Sybil was very grateful that Hugh had insisted that they have a housekeeper to run the house for them, it made her life so much easier to know that she didn't have to rush round doing domestic jobs. But anyone who had thought that she was marrying Hugh for his money so that she could become a social butterfly was very wide of the mark. They both preferred to live a quiet life, and spent a lot of their evenings at home. They had made friends with other young couples and went out to dinner and to some parties, so they were not recluses, but thier lives were far from being a hectic whirl. They enjoyed their peaceful time together, Sybil sewing, Hugh reading, or listening to music together.

She pulled herself back to the present, then realised that if she was going to have the time to pick up some new materials for her work, she had better get on or she would be late for class.

This is a very interesting sequel, Jennie. In the first drabble, Sybil's motives for marrying Hugh could be interpreted as marrying for money, or to get away from her family - I'm glad that this drabble is showing us otherwise. I hope she and her family can rebuild some bridges.

Thank-you.

#51:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Fri Jul 22, 2005 12:48 pm

I did warn you all that this was going to be a short drabble, so this is the last of it.

A few weeks later, Sybil opened the envelopes with shaking hands. She was quite glad that Hugh wasn't there, she didn't want him to see her quivering over such simple things as letters from her father and sister.

Her father's letter was a revelation. He apologised again for the trials that they had put her through during the preparations for her wedding, then told her in detail about her mother's illness and prognosis. That alone told Sybil that at long last, her father was treating her as an adult. The final paragraphs were filled with Jem's pleasure and thankfulness that Sybil had written to him.

She sat down suddenly in an armchair, it was odd, but her knees wouldn't support her any longer. She supposed that it was the relief. Whether it was relief that she still had some sort of relationship with her father, or relief that her mother was at last getting the treatment that she needed, Sybil couldn't yet work out.

Then she turned to Josette's letter. This was bound to be far more difficult. The fact that Josette had written was significant. This meant that Janie Lucy had shown her letter to Josette, and left her to deal with it. She took a couple of long, deep breaths, then pulled the sheets of writing paper out of the envelopes.

Her eyes anxiously scanned the contents. Josette wanted to see her. At first that was all she could think of, she felt overwhelmingly happy at that. Then she calmed down a little and began to read the letter again, more slowly this time.

Josette was well, she was happy and she was enjoying being in Guernsey. Ailie and the twins were there with her, and were enjoying spending their holidays with their companions in mischief.

Then Josette hinted at the misery that she had suffered out in Australia.

'I gather from your letter to Janie that you know that my engagement to John didn't survive 'the disgrace' of mother being admitted to a clinic for treatment for alcoholism.'

What a thing for poor Josette to have to write!

Then came the news that Sybil had not heard. Aunt Jo's abortive visit to Melbourne was vividly described. Sybil felt a surge of pity for Josette; she could just imagine what Josette had felt when she saw her aunt and heard what she had to say. So that explained why Ailie and the twins were in Guernsey for the summer, and why Josette was working for the Lucys.

Josette then wrote:

'I'd really like it if you and Hugh did come out to the Island. It would be good to see you again. I'm sorry that I behaved as I did before your wedding. I felt that I was in a trap and I couldn't see how I could escape from it. You were escaping, you and Hugh were so much in love, I was jealous. The only way that I knew how to behave was the way that they taught us at school. I thought I'd escape all the problems that way.'

Sybil felt yet more pity. Here she was, so happy with Hugh and with being able to do her embroidery course, she had hardly given a thought to Josette's situation. But she could make up for it now. She turned back to the letter, reading her sister's account of how good their father had been to her, how he actually listened to her, and how Josette was going to be studying at LSE this coming autumn.

'Daddy actually told me how grateful he was for my help and support before I left Australia. He's different now, he listens and he tries to understand. I think you'd like him now, Sybil. He's more like other people's fathers, and he's even good company.'

Sybil read on. There was a lot to take in. Josette's letter was saying more than the actual words, and it gave her some hope that she might be able to rebuild her relationship with her father on a new footing. And she might be able to have a different kind of relationship with her sister.

'So if you and Hugh do want to come out for a long weekend, or even longer, Janie says that you aren't to think of staying at a hotel, you can stay here. Ailie is staying with the Chesters and Kevin and Kester are staying with the Ozannes. All the children get together every day, so you needn't worry about not seeing them. The real problem might be that you get more of them than you really want to. They're full of mischief, and the tricks they get up to! And we thought that being prefects and having to deal with naughty Middles was a good preparation for the problems of life after school!'

Sybil read the rest of the letter, then sat back. She was overwhelmingly relieved and happy that she still had a family.

After a couple of minutes, she decided to share her pleasure.

Getting up, she went to the phone, dialled Hugh's number, and as soon as she had been put through and heard Hugh's voice, she said.

'Darling, it's me. Everything's going to be all right!'

THE END

What a lovely ending, Jennie. It's wonderful to see both Jem and Josette responding so positively to Sybil's letters to them, and being so frank about things, too. Each, in their own way, has acknowledged their own shortcomings and 'filled in the gaps' for Sybil about all that has happened since her wedding.

I foresee a joyous reunion with Josette before long, and another at with Jem at some point in the future, perhaps after Josette is settled at LSE. Cue for short drabble, Jennie? Please?

Thanks Jennie. At first I was disappointed that it ended there but in fact it was the perfect place, where Sybil is about to share her joy with Hugh.

Like everyone else, I hope that Sybil and Hugh whisper in your ear again.
