Just to show I haven't forgotten about Conqueror (Sojourner's taking longer than I expected - http://www.fictionpress.com/~angelofthenorth has the links to all my work on that score) I thought I'd post the new stanza I wrote last night, along with the original four.

It's in the very pavement
Under which you tread
It's in the faces of the living and the memories of the dead
It's all around and in you
If you miss it, you're a fool,
Wonder what I'm meaning?
It's the spirit of the school.

It's in the dark nights dreaming
Of a future framed with peace
It's in striving out for justice
And knowing not to cease
It's in the great compassion of love and faith and hope
It's knowing that in our friends we'll have the strength to cope.

It's dancing in the moonlight and singing in the rain
It's taking knocks, and knocks, and knocks
And standing up again
It's talking, chatting, sharing,
In a language not your own
It's in great feats of daring
And in small things, done alone.

It's in the prayers unspoken,
For the dying or the well.
It's being rude awoken
By a loud, persistent bell.
It's in the love of living
For the joy of being alive
It's needing to create a place
Where all can and want to thrive
It's enjoying times of restfulness
As well as times of noise
It's an ordered sense of boisterousness
Well trained by gentle joys.

It's knowing what is wrong and right and observing all the rules
And knowing when to break them
In the spirit of the school.

They expected Joey to sit down after reading her poem, and gave her a round of applause that would have enabled her to do so. Instead she remained standing, and it petered to nothing, with much bafflement."I've decided to leave the Chalet School" she said.

No one knew how to respond - any residual applause from the poem was swallowed up by the enormity of the statement, and any new applause was highly inappropriate and those whose hands glanced together were stifled by the looks of disapprobation from their nearest neighbours.Instead, the staff sat in silence for a full ten minutes, surely the longest such episode ever observed in the daylight hours of termtime at the Chalet School.

------
Thank you for all the plaudits guys, much appreciated.

Angel -please tell us when in the School's history the last post of yours is set! Don't know exactly what the announcement means - though it is appropriate that Joey should be identified as the author. Thank you. Laughing
