A shortish drabblet, that I hope you will enjoy... more to come soon

Of course the Triplets had always been a decent sort. There was Margot who was funny and carefree even if she did have a strong temper. She was pretty too of course, they all were. Then there was Len. He had perhaps even had a bit of a crush on her at the start. She was the serious one, but she was friendly too, and always looking after her younger brothers and sisters. That was probably where the attraction had lay- in that similarity, for he had always felt responsible for his siblings with only a crackpot for a Father around.

Then there was Con. He hadn't ever really thought about her to be honest. She was the quietest, a bit dreamy, and not quite all there. She had never participated in family life in the same way as her sisters. Oh she was pretty of course, but then so were her Triplets.

It wasn't until next summer that he had seen her in any other light than 'the middle triplet'.

They had decided to go on a picnic. The three Richardsons, To be honest it would probably have been more fun if ony Roddy had been going with him. Ruey might be a tomboy and his sister to boot, but she was still a girl. At the last minute Aunt Joey had insisted on them taking Con along, since she had been cooped up writing too long. He had to admit that she might have been right, Con had dark circles under her eyes, and her hair was falling down in probably every way possible.

"I'm sorry to intrude, you probably wanted to be just the three of you, but you know Mamma. She will insist on fussing!"

The three of them had insisted that she was welcome. He had always felt like he was in debt to the Maynards for taking them in, and even if it would have been nice to have had some time alone, he would never let any of them think he was ungrateful. Eventually they had found a nice place to picnic. Con had not insisted on showing them a nice spot she already knew of, but had suggested they find a spot for themselves.

"It's becomes so much more beautiful when you find beauty yourself than having to have it shown to you." she had declared.

The truth of that statement had soon became clear to him, but probably not in the way she had meant it.

While the three of them had been exploring she had been content to watch, and when Roddy had found a clearing in the forest, she had exclaimed as much as them at the loveliness of it.

"Haven't you been here before?" he had had to ask.

"No, never." and she slung her arm through his to show him a tiny river flowing through some of the trees. Apart from Ruey another girl had never been this close to him before. All he was aware of was the soft, fruity, feminine scent she had.

Her eyes were glowing softly, and he saw how much nature and life meant to her.

Of course, he hadn't realised then what he was feeling. It wasn't until later, a lot later in fact that he had understood how he felt. But that afternoon had changed one thing for ever.

After that day he had always thought of her as Con, not just 'the other triplet'.

I never really saw the obvious link between Con and Roger but I think this might make it all a bit more logical.

Thanks Brie, looking forward to more!

He only ever saw or heard from her in the holidays. He had never been one for such a sissy thing as letter-writing, and all he had ever bothered with was a duty letter to the Maynards and a scrawled note to Ruey when he was feeling generous. He had found himself thinking of her at odd times throughout that year but it had never been anything important. But as the summer drew close he found himself looking forward to going back to the Platz despite its isolation from his friends. He was looking forward to seeing Ruey, he had convinced himself.

That summer had been a strange one. It had been strictly 'in the family' but by the last two weeks of the holidays it was known that Len was to be Head girl after this term was finished, and Margot to be Games prefect. Two of the most coveted positions as he knew. Con had been appointed Magazine prefect, which of course suited her perfectly. Well that was what he had thought. He had thought she would be overjoyed, she had spent most of the summer holed up in some nook or cranny somewhere writing.

It was two days before he had to go back, he did hate the journeys, for not only was he responsible for his thoughtless brother, but all the Maynard boys as well. He was on his way down to the kitchen to convince Anna to re-iron some of his clothes thanks, of course, to Roddy's carelessness. He had decided to go down the back stairs as that was the quickest route, and that had meant he should be able to avoid Aunt Joey's tongue. When he had gotten to the staircase, all he could hear was some sobs. it was not well lit there, and the one bulb that was normally there had gone out. So he couldn't make out who it was. His first thought had been to turn around and leave the girl to her tears, crying girls frankly scared him. Then he had thought of all the Maynards had done for him.

Berating his conscious for being so strong he had made his way down the stairs.

"Who's there?" he had asked.

He heard the girl trying to stifle her sobs, and then "It's just me. Is that you Roger?"

It was Con. What was she crying about? She hadn't seemed like the helpless constantly weeping girl he had expected to find.

"Yes. it's just me. What is wrong Con?" He sat beside her. The steps were narrow, and he found himself sitting rather closer than he intended.

There was silence for awhile, apart from Con's breath catching as she tried to stop her tears.

"You won't tell anyone will you Roger?" she asked.

"Of course not. Who would I tell?" he had asked, with a good deal of sense.

"I've disappointed Mamma" she whispered.

"What? How?" Roger had asked disbelievingly, suddenly feeling quite protective of her.

"If only I had been made Second Pree then Mamma and Papa would have had all of us in the important positions. I know she hasn't said anything, but Mamma, was editor when she was only thirteen. It's not as good as being one of the main prefects. They haven't said anything but I know they are disappointed."

Con had started to cry again then, as she admitted out loud what she had been worrying about. She leaned against him, and awkwardly he had put his arm around her.

"What rot!" he had said forcefully. "Con I thought you had some sense! If your staff had travelled to the moon and back they wouldn't have found someone more suitable to be the editor than you. You will do that job so well that no one will even dare be disappointed in you. Isn't it what you want?"

Con had looked at him then nodded.

"It is what I want. You all know I want to write when i leave school. But I do want them to be proud of me too."

"They are." he had said with conviction.

"How do you know?" she asked.

"They would be fools if they weren't, and your parents are hardly fools."

Con had smiled up at him, and he had reached down and wiped the tears off her cheeks.

"Better?" he had asked.

She nodded.

He hadn't realised it at the time, but that had really changed everything, and when he was back in School he often found himself remebering the two of them wedged together on a little step in the darkness.

He never forgot the smile she had given him, or the way it had reached right up to her eyes, causing them to sparkle and light up her face.

Aww, that was sweet. I always felt so sorry for Con - people just seemed to dismiss her as being too dreamy to be much good at anything!

And so very plausible that she would think she'd let her parents down by not being 2nd Prefect.

Super stuff, thanks Brie!

Poor Con, she was always made to feel inferior to the others, yet we know that Len suffered from the burden of being made to feel responsible, and Margot was not a consistent success as Games Pefect.

He hadn't seen her properly for a few years after that. It had been his last year of school, and unfortunately the world of engineering did not give long summer holidays. He hadn't been looking forward to Len's wedding. He had been distinctly aware that he would have to meet all sorts of "relatives" of whom he had no interest, and who had no real interest in him. The only benefit had been getting to see Ruey and Roddy, and though he was loathe to admit it he was looking forward to seeing Con again. Before he had gone to the Platz he remembered looking out the brief note she had sent him years ago.

Thanks for everything. I think i'm actually doing quite well at this editing thing. Will write properly later.

Con

But she never had.

She had said thanks though, and ashamedly he remembered how he had treasured that letter, until it had become apparant that another letter was not to follow.

When he had arrived at the Platz he had been mortified to find out that Ruey, Roddy and Con were all arriving by the same train, and that wasn't for another two days. Steve and Chas were on that train too, so he was completely alone. He had been put in Steve's room. That had been the only benefit, having the room to himself for the first day or two. Aunt Joey had hugged him closely when he arrived, and whispered how proud of him she was. it was still quite quiet then, so she had asked him all about how he was enjoying working out at the Tiernsee.

The next day most of the Russells had arrived and Roger had painstakingly been introduced to them all. Old friends of Aunt Joey and Uncle Jack had started to arrive too, and he had wondered how they would all fit in.

The day after, he had embarassingly spent most of at the window, waiting for the party from England to arrive. They had arrived late of course, not getting there till almost nineteen. He managed to look slightly less eager as he watched Len fly out of the door and throw herself at her Triplet. He had gulped, Con looked so different, her hair was short, and she had looked so grown up. He had never seen anyone so attractive.

That was the moment he had started to realise how he saw her. it was also the moment he had realised it would never work.

He was just staring at her when he had been jumped by Ruey flinging herself at him. Hugging her awkwardly he had managed to mutter a warning about how crazy it was inisde before she had sent him to greet his brother. Painfully aware of Con's prescence he had just shook hands with his brother. There had been some manly talk and back-slapping between him and the Maynard boys, and then he had had to turn his attention to Con. Part of him was thankful that she had gone inside with Len, the other part of him was a bit disappointed that he had not gotten to hug her too.

That evening she had gone up to him, and tapped him on the shoulder.

"Hello" she had said smiling.

"Hello" he had said back uncomfortably.

Her smile had wavered slightly, but she had continued speaking to him.

"You love the Tirol don't you?" she had said after awhile.

"I'm sorry" he said embarassed, "Just tell me to shut up if you want me too."

"Don't be silly" she had assured him. "Sometimes it feels like home to me too, but then so does London." She had continued more quietly, "More so than here."

He had looked at her surprised, realising how little he knew about her.

After that conversation they had seen very little of each other, just glances across a room. He remembered hoping that those looks held feelings for him, but even as he hoped he had doubted it.

That last night before he had had to go back, he had been tapped on the shoulder again.

"Want to go for a walk?" It was Con.

He had nodded mutely.

"I thought we could go up to that spot where we picnic-ed all those years ago. It's not too far."

He had smiled. "It wasn't that long ago either."

"No I suppose not" she had admitted, "But lots of things have changed since then."

He had nodded, not sure what to say, and not sure what she meant.

They made their way there, and by the time they had arrived it was dusk. Con was shivering. Silently he had taken off his jacket and put it round her shoulders.

She smiled up at him, wrapping it tightly around herself.

"Won't you be cold?" she had asked.

"I'm fine" he had answered honestly, smiling.

They had sat for a while on a fallen log, the only sounds were the river trickling slowly past behind them.

"It's getting dark" said Con eventually, as the stars began to appear in the sky.

He moved closer to her. "Are you still cold?" he asked.

She nodded.

"We should go back" he had said reluctantly.

But she had shaken her head, leaning against him.

"Why didn't you write back?" she had said at last.

"What?" he had asked.

"When I wrote to you."

"All I got was a note saying you would write later. That never came."

He had hugged her impulsively then. "I thought you had forgot."

"I thought you had too" she said her dark eyes staring into his.

"No" then after a short pause, "I couldn't forget you."

She had smiled then, that same smile she had smiled before, the one that lit up her face.

"I'm going back to London tomorrow" she had said though, her eyes clouding.

"I know" he had said.

They had left soon after, it was not until they had left the woods that he had noticed that her hand was in his.

It had been the perfect evening. Sometimes he thought of it as the perfect end to his holiday. But he hated that word 'end'.

If only he had kissed her. Then he would have known.

For anyone who has been reading my other drabbles, you may recognise parts of this, some of this overlaps with 'The University Years'. However for anyone who has not read that drabble it really doesn't matter Wink
Thanks for all your lovely comments. This drabble is a bit different from the way I normally write so I just hope it's okay.

For those who have read "Back on the Tiernsee" that is where these events are taken from. A new and improved version of that drabble will be available soon for anyone who is interested. Thanks for all the comments- they are very inspiring!

He had gone back to the Tiernsee the next day. His friends had noticed a change in him, he was distracted and he would often just stand staring at the lake for hours. He had always been going to write, but somehow it was too hard to write even though he wanted nothing more. When his boss had told him they needed one of the engineers to represent the company in England, he had been eager to accept the offer of accompanying the senior partner.

"Got any family or friends in England?" Burt had asked him.

He had nodded shyly.

Burt raised his eyebrows. "Girlfriend?" he asked.

He had had to shake his head.

Burt nodded sympathetically. "Potential girlfriend?"

He wished it was that simple.

The idea of him being with Con had seemed an impossibility, but so was not visiting her when he was in the same country.

Burt had told him that he wouldn't be needed for the first few days, and that he should go and enjoy himself. He headed for London. After several wrong turns, and an extremely long short-cut he found himself outside some dilapidated buildings. He checked the scrap of paper. It was the right address.

There was a list of names on the door, and sure enough M.C. Maynard was on the third floor. The door was open. He went in, and up the worn stairs. He knocked on her door nervously. He waited so long that he was sure she wasn't in, but eventually the door opened.

He had hardly recognised her. Her eyes were bloodshot, and her hair unkempt. She was wearing old clothes, and her normally pale face was white.

"Roger!" she had exclaimed looking shocked.

"Con" he resisted the temptation to pick her up and hold her, she looked so awful. "What on Earth is wrong?"

Con looked at him silently for a moment. At first she looked angry, and then just sad. "Don't you know?"

He shook his head confused.

"Mamma and Cecil. They're dead."

He looked at her shocked, and then he just picked her up and held her close. he felt her sagging in his arms as he supported her.

Later they were sitting down, drinking tea. "I was there. Me and Len, we saw Cecil die- We should have stopped it!"

Roger just put his arm around her comforting her with his silence.

"Mamma blamed herself. They said she died of heartbreak."

"I need to get back there. I handed in my resignation. Len has her own family now. I'm the oldest. I can't leave it all to Auntie Madge."

"I'll be there too" he said, "Amn't I the oldest?"

She shook her head slowly.

"The funeral is on Wednesday can you come?" She looked at him anxiously.

He thought about the conference and the experience, and the money his company was investing in sending him to London.

"Of course I can."

If the funeral was on Wednesday morning, he might get back in time for the conference on Thursday.

She had looked at him gratefully.

They had travelled together. They had talked all through the night, Con sharing memories of her Mother from when she had been a small child.

"Sometimes I see Anna as much as my Mother as Mamma. When I think like that I always remember Mamma cleaning my knee when I scraped it one time, and her eyes were filling up with tears because she hated seeing me hurt. Thats how I shall remember her, wanting to protect me, and stop me from having to feel any pain."

Those words had brought tears to his eyes, though he had hastily wiped them away. But Con seemed to take strength from her words.

"Mamma would hate to think I was sad because of her." she stated.

"Aunt Joey, would hate that, she would probably rather we had a party to celebrate her life than a long sombre funeral." he said, smiling despite himself.

Con smiled back. "She would tell us to stop being spineless jelly fish and then she would tell us to remember the good things, and be happy for what we had." she paused, thinking. "Thanks Roger" she said at last.

The next day at the funeral Roger had smiled to himself as he saw Con strong and calm, helping her Aunt up to talk. He looked up surprised, as Con went to speak as well.

"Mamma would have hated to see us here in tears like this. As Matey would say we must not grow up to be spineless jellyfish. Let us remember her fondly, not sadly. With a smile, not with tears."

He saw the tears start to fall, and then he saw her smile, before she nodded slightly at him, showing she hadn't forgotten their conversation of the night before.

She had just lost her Mother, and her little sister. There was nothing he could do, so why did he just want to take all her pain away for her?

He had had to leave about an hour after the funeral, and he was still late for the conference. He hadn't told Con why he had to go, because he didn't want her to worry. Later he realised that she had probably worried more this way, for he had just hugged her, said bye, and disapeared.

When he got back to the Tiernsee he had wanted to write again, but how could he now? Whatever he said now, he was bound to put his foot in it, and make her grief worse.

The next time he had heard from her had been a duty letter- which nonetheless he had also found himself keeping.

Thank you for attending the funeral. I don't know how I would have reacted if you hadn't been there.

Con

For someone who wanted to be a writer- in fact who was a writer- her letters to him had bordered on dreadful. They were only made worse by his. He had wanted to write something deep and meaningful, but it had just come out as mush. In the end he had written something pathetic like Its okay. Glad I could be there. Roger. Whatever it had said, it had made Cons letter look like an essay it had been so short.

He was a man though. He had never had the right words. But they couldn't have been that awful he supposed. He still remembered the night he had found her on his doorstep.

It had been a long day, just about everything that could have gone wrong had, and the result had been that he had not arrived home until almost nineteen.

It was warm however, and walking along beside the Tiernsee, with the mountains as a magnificent backdrop, he had calmed down and relaxed.

As he walked up his stairs he saw her.

He remembered that moment clearly. He had rubbed his eyes, thinking he was dreaming. It was afterall one of his favourite dreams, to find her waiting for him.

She stood up from where she had been squatted on his top step.

"It's a bit bizarre when someone you aren't expecting turns up on your doorstep isn't it?" she said, alluding to the time he had turned up unnanounced at her flat.

He had smiled widely. "Bizarre and unexpected." he said. "What are you doing here?"

"You don't mind that I dropped by do you? I'm going home tomorrow. I came to see Auntie Madge and the gang, but I couldn't leave without seeing you."

"You should have come before" he said, taking in every line and shadow of her face. He longed to reach out and touch her.

"I know" she had said dropping her eyes.

He looked at her annoyed. "You didn't have to come at all if you didn't want to."

She had looked up at him, surprised and hurt looking.

"I wanted to. But I can go if you want." she had stuck her chin out defiantly.

"Don't go" he said, grabbing her hand, scared to let her go. "Come in."

Silently she followed him.

He had been dreaming of that moment for so long, and now that it had arrived he didn't know what to do.

"Tea?" he asked.

"Lemonade if you've got it. It's far to hot for tea." she replied.

He had placed the glass down in front of her.

He stood against the wall silently watching her.

"Oh Roger! Stop it" she had exclaimed, "Come and sit down."

Obediently he had sat down, at the other side of the table.

She had gulped. She looked nervous.

Feeling very unsure of himself he came and sat beside her.

After a few moments he felt her hand resting on his leg. He placed his own hand on top of hers reassuringly.

She had looked at him sadly.

"What's wrong?" he asked removing his hand.

"I have to go. I promised Madge I would be back for Abendessen."

"Will I see you again?"

"If you want to you know where to find me." she said, looking at him regretfully.

He led her outside again.

Slowly he leaned forward and kissed her, at first gently pressing against her lips, and then with more passion as his tongue found its way into her mouth.

Con pulled away after a few minutes. Her hands still ruffling his hair.

They stood staring into each others eyes and then she had turned away and ran down the path towards Briesau.

He had regretted not kissing her before, but kissing her had made him realise how much she meant to him.

He loved Con.

Almost finished this drabble. Two more posts left. Thanks for all the comments.

"If you want to, you know where to find me." she said.

Those words had replayed themselves in his mind over and over again. He had to tell her how much he loved her. But could he really?

It was strange being back on the Platz. He walked along to the new chalets that had been built knowing that Con lived in one of them. The third door he chapped was opened by a young man who politely told him that Con lived directly across the road.

Quaking he crossed the road, with his hand trembling he knocked on the door.

She had looked exquisite.

"Roger, you came." was all she said though.

"Come for a walk?" he had asked.

"You came all the way to the platz to ask me to come for a walk?" she asked.

He had nodded feeling stupid.

She had smiled "I'm just coming then" and she had grabbed a coat and left with him.

He had walked purposefully.

"I come here to think sometimes" she said as they entered the trees.

"It's becomes so much more beautiful when you find beauty yourself rather than having to have it shown to you." said Roger quietly.

Con looked at him startled.

"You said that to me once. When we discovered this place." Con sat down on the log where they had sat before, but her eyes never left his face.

Hesitatingly Roger got down on one knee.

"You were right" he had said, his voice shaking slightly, "You are the most beautiful person I have ever met, and the idea that I cannot have you has tormented me for years. Con I came here to tell you that I love you."

"I love you too Roger" she had whispered, slipping her hands into his.

"Con will you marry me?" he had asked.

Con slid off the log sp she was kneeling in the leaves too. They were nose to nose.

She leaned forward and whispered in his ear.

"Yes"

They had kissed then. He never wanted to let her go as his arms encircled her body protecting her.

That had been the happiest moment of his life, knowing that he would always be with her. For better and for worse; in sickness and in health. But together, and that was all that mattered.

Sorry. I think I am about as good as EBD when it comes to proposals! this is the penultimate post, just one more short-y to go. Thanks for all the comments.

Thanks for all the lovely comments people have made! Well here it is:

All that, had led to this, and turning around he found Con lying beside him.

Startled awake by his movement she groggily opened her eyes.

"Good morning my wife." he said gently.

Despite her half-open eyes she smiled widely.

"Morning husband. What time is it?"

"It's only five. Are you going back to sleep Mrs Richardson?"

"Ughh that does make me sound old Roger."

He laughed.

"It's only been one day, but you have made my life perfect Con."

She moved her hand out from under the covers to look at the gold band which now adorned her finger.

She leaned forward and kissed his nose, before snuggling up to him and falling back asleep.
