Con's Secret

~ Gem

The rest of the week passed very slowly. Rix went about his work as usual, but he was withdrawn and silent. He had told his colleagues that Peggy was ill, but not the full details. Rayner and Forrest were sympathetic but he rather thought they might not remain so if he didn’t concentrate more and work harder. It was a pressured time at the hospital and they frequently found themselves having to cover some of the work of other departments, due to short-staffing.

On Friday a small girl came into the A&E with severe head trauma and Rayner and Rix were called. They were unable to save her and she died in surgery. Sadly, it was not out of the usual but this time the sight of her blonde curls and lifeless body affected Rix much more deeply than ever before and to his mortification, he started crying in front of Rayner, two other doctors and three nurses.

Rayner cleared the room.

"It’s all right, it’s understandable. Don’t worry about it," Rayner was brusque but kind when Rix started to apologise. "Go and change and take a break. I’ll finish here and tell her parents," he looked down at the small girl regretfully, "It’s always worse when it’s a child."

At five, Rayner handed over his car keys, "It’s in the car park. Have a nice time in Devonshire."

"Thanks. How are you getting home though? I’ll drop you off."

Rayner agreed and they drove to his house in Hampstead Village. Rix had never been there before. It was enormous with a huge garden that was lovely, but overgrown. It was clear that someone had once spent a great deal of time and attention on it. Rix studied it out of the drawing-room window while Rayner poured him a glass of single malt.

"Elizabeth used to spent a lot of time out there. I tried to keep it up but I didn’t really have the time. I keep meaning to get someone round, but, well, there doesn’t seem much point. This was my father’s house. He was a GP and he used all the downstairs rooms as his Surgery."

"Would you ever use it for that again? I mean, when you leave St Thomas’.."

"I might. I’ve been thinking about it. I should sell it and move somewhere smaller, really, but it’s difficult."

"It’s a nice house," Rix looked around, privately thinking that it didn’t look like anyone lived there. He looked at the framed photographs Rayner had on the mantelpiece, practically the only personal touch in the room, of an attractive brunette and a small boy with a cheeky face and darker hair. Presumably Rayner’s late wife, Elizabeth, and his son. Rayner had mentioned them, but Rix couldn’t remember the child’s name.

Haltingly at first, he began to tell Rayner about Peggy until the whole story was out.

He drove fast to Belgravia and collected Peggy. Alan and Jenny clung to her crying and begging her not to go and she was visibly upset as she got into the car.

It was a long drive. Peggy slept for most of it but it was late when they arrived and the Bettanys were asleep. Peggy leant heavily on her brother’s arm as they went upstairs and he saw her into her bedroom, returning once she was in bed, to say goodnight.

"Can you stay to talk?" she asked, "Remember when we were little and you used to come in and talk to me after Lights Out?"

"Of course, but lie down. You need to get some sleep."

"All I ever do now is sleep. I hate it. How am I going to tell them, Rix?"

He reached over and took hold of her hand. "I don’t know," he admitted, pulling off his tie. "Do you want me to be there when you tell them?"

"Please, Rix, I need you… Should I tell Daffy too or do you think she’s too young to understand?"

"She’ll understand, Peg. I think you should tell Alan. I’m sure the poor kid knows something’s wrong. It’s like the time we were left with Aunt Madge and nobody told us why, do you remember?"

"Of course. We thought they didn’t love us anymore. We did nothing but cry that first week - do you mean Alan thinks I don’t love him?"

"No." Yes. "Just - I really think you should tell him. I will if you want me to. He should know. And maybe Jenny too."

"I understand. I’ll tell him when I get back. Let me get telling Mummy and Daddy out of the way first." Peggy sounded exhausted.

Rix kissed her goodnight and went to his own bedroom.

Have just caught up on the last 3 posts, Mia, and loved the little insights into Rayner.

The heartbreak goes on, but at least Peggy now realises, from her own experiences, just what it would mean if they didn't tell the children. Crying or Very sad

Thank you.

Oh, I have just caught up after a month's moving and med school apps and not having internet and...

1) I still dislike Giles. Regardless. But then, I have never liked Giles.
2) Although she is terminally ill and has become much more sympathetic recently, there was no need for Peggy to be such a bitch about the triplets' 'premature' arrival in the Oberland, though I do understand slightly more her concerns about working mothers leaving their children unattended.
3) Mia, you are so awesomely fabulous. I almost wish I'd been gone long enough to be able to catch up on the whole story!

“Why didn’t you bring the children with you?” Mollie asked, as they all had mid-morning coffee in the drawing-room, in front of a cheery fire. Dick was reading the paper and Daphne was lying on the floor, trying to complete a jigsaw puzzle.

“I’ve got something to tell you,” Peggy said, the determination clear in her silvery voice.

“What’s that, mavourneen?” Mollie asked with a smile that vanished from her face as Peggy told them everything in calm, measured tones.

“What? No – that can’t be true.” Mollie said, starting to cry and immediately enfolding her eldest daughter in her arms.

“Is there nothing they can do?” Dick asked, the pain on his face was difficult to behold. Peggy shook her head.

“I’ve had all the tests in Canada, Daddy… It’s fine, I mean, at least I don’t have to go through lots of horrid operations and they say I’ll be myself right until the – well, till the end.”

“Is this true?” he asked, turning to Rix, who had his hands full dealing with the sobbing Daphne. “Are there no drugs – nothing?”

Rix shook his head, “It’s the position of the tumour. If they operated, it would kill her.”

“There must be something!” Dick’s sorrow made him sound sharp. Peggy left her mother and went over to him as he started to cry.

As soon as he could, Rix took Daphne outside, thinking that his parents would want to speak with Peggy. Daphne had cried a little, but now seemed calmer.

“Are you all right?” he asked her.

“Yes,” she said, taking hold of his hand. “Where are we going?”

“We could go down to the village, I suppose. I need to buy stamps.”

“OK. Can I have sweets?”

“Sure. Daph, did you understand what Peggy said?”

“Course I did, I’m not stupid!” Daphne retorted rudely. “I don’t want to talk about it!” she wrenched her hand away and stalked ahead, a black look settling on her face.

The Post Office was busy, Rix waited in the line with an eye on Daphne who was skulking by the postcards put out for the tourists, scowling furiously.

“My dear, how nice to see you! Are you staying for the weekend?” Elderly Mrs Polgrean started to chat to him and he was forced to answer her politely while the line moved forward and Daphne slipped out of his line of vision.

He was in the act of buying stamps when there came an enormous crash, a scream and numerous exclamations of alarm. Rix turned to see Daphne lying on the floor, screaming, having the kind of tantrum she used to have when she was smaller. The postcard stand was lying on its side and postcards lay everywhere.

Sorry for the spree but I am out for the rest of the day now and wanted to post this - hope it (drabble) is all right Confused

“So what did you do?” Peggy asked him that evening, after he had slipped into her room to say goodnight and finding her wide awake, had decided to tell her the story, making it as amusing as possible.

“It took me about five minutes to push my way through all the old dears fussing round her. It was awful! Then I just grabbed her and dragged her outside. Mercifully she came to her senses more or less, so I left her with Mrs Polgrean and went back to apologise. And pay for the damage she’d caused, the brat! Thirty-five shillings it was - and I forgot to pick up my stamps!”

Peggy laughed, then sobered. “She’s upset isn’t she. She wouldn’t speak to me when I went in to say goodnight. I don’t want Alan to be like that. It’s bad enough with Daph, I couldn’t bear it if Alan wouldn’t talk to me.”

“She just needs time for it to sink in.”

“I haven’t got any time left, though, have I? Fewer than six months, Rix.” Peggy’s eyes filled with tears. “I wish I could shout and scream and push things over, but I can’t, I have to be strong for everyone.”

“No you don’t,” he said, firmly. “You can cry all you like, Peg, I’m here for you. I know it’s completely unfair and I wish I could do something about it.”

She gave a bitter laugh, “I hadn’t thought of that. It’s certainly ironic, considering what you do for a living. Rix – will you tell me what’s going to happen to me? I mean, am I going to have more fits and will I forget things? The consultant in Canada wouldn’t tell me.”

“It differs from person to person.” Rix prevaricated, but she was determined.

“I want to know everything that’s going to happen. Will you tell me? I want to be prepared. It’s more frightening not knowing."

He told her as much as he could, she seemed to accept it calmly, even though much of it was unpleasant hearing and he didn’t soften it for her, as he knew she wouldn’t have wanted him to do so.

“I think you should go somewhere you and Giles and the children can be alone for a few weeks,” he finished. “Tell the children and prepare them for what’s going to happen. The whole family will know soon and you’ll be deluged with visits I expect. You should take some time for your own family – put them first, I mean. I know there’s everyone else to consider, but don’t worry about them for now.”

“I was going to ask about that. You know how fond I am of them all, but Giles – and the children – I do need to spend time with them alone. Is that very selfish of me?”

“No, of course it isn’t. I’ve got the perfect place for you to go. Mary-Lou suggested it, actually. Do you remember Howells?”

“Of course, how could I forget it? The school was there – and we lived at the Round House. I loved Howells.”

“Mary-Lou still has Carn Beg. You could go there for a few weeks if you wanted, as long as you like. It’s got the garden for the kids and it’s quiet. I think it’s what you need, just to have weeks the kids will always remember.”

“Are you crying?” Peggy asked gently, reaching for his hand. “Don’t, darling,” she implored, even though her own tears were falling down her face. “You’re the best brother I could ever have had and you know what you mean to me.”

Rix spent over an hour talking to her and in the end stayed until Peggy was asleep, getting up quietly from the bed and heading back to his own room.

Daphne’s room was next to Peggy’s own. He paused outside and listened carefully, then opened the door and went in.

“Come on, Daph, don’t cry like that. You’ll make yourself ill. Come over here and wash your face.”

Daphne went to the basin and splashed her tear-stained face.

“Come into my room and we can have a talk,” Rix said, “Be quiet, won’t you? I don’t want to wake anyone.”

Daphne nodded and followed him, still sniffing.

“I’m sorry about the Post Office,” she said, when she was sat on his bed, wrapped up in a blanket and more able to speak coherently.

“No harm done.” Rix replied.

“Only to the wall – it’s got a big dent in it.” Daphne said, and for a moment they both laughed.

“I’ve paid for it to be fixed – you owe me a fortune, Theresa Daphne Bettany.” Rix smiled and put his arm around her.

“I’m sorry I did that.” Daphne said, as she snuggled up to him. “I’ll go and say sorry next time I go with Mummy to the village. Rix – is Mummy very upset?”

“About Peggy, you mean? Yes, darling, I’m afraid she is. The other thing of course, is that until Peg and I were fourteen we lived with Auntie Madge, and then when Peg was twenty-two or so, she went to Canada, so they’ve only really had a few years together properly. That’s what Dad and Mother are thinking, anyway. Peggy doesn’t think that, but it’s very difficult.”

“What happens when somebody dies?” Daphne asked, frowning and biting her lip.

She's being very generous to Peggy with her offer of help, as well, is OOAO.

Daphne needs to be thinking about her little nephew and niece, though her confusion is very understandable.

#63:  Author: MiaLocation: London PostPosted: Fri Oct 07, 2005 9:55 pm

Rix paused, but then an old memory, of asking his aunt the same question, came back to him.

“It’s only like falling asleep and waking up with God,” he said, eventually.

“Oh, will Peggy go to Heaven? Will she be able to look down on us and see us?”

“Of course she will. She’ll always be with you because she loves you, you see. I remember how excited she was when you were born – she wrote me a really long letter describing you. I’ll show you it next time you come to London.”

“OK. Goodnight, Rix.” Daphne snuggled down in her blanket and fell asleep within seconds, worn out by her earlier crying fit.

Rix carried her back to her own bedroom, thinking all the time about what he had told her, what Madge had said about waking with God. It was strangely comforting.

Back in London on Monday, Rix was late for work. They had returning to London very late on Sunday night, his parents had been unwilling for Peggy to leave.

He literally ran to the hospital, reaching his office ten minutes late, to find Toby Forrest waiting for him.

“They want you in the old building – the trustees, I mean. I said you must have been doing a patient evaluation. What did you do, sleep in?”

“Yes. Why do they want to see me?” Rix threw his coat across his desk and tried to make his hair lie flat, still out of breath from racing up the stairs.

“Think it’s about the Chief Consultancy. Rayner says to miss the first op and go over there, but he needs you for the eleven o’clock. Good luck, old man.” Forrest grinned.

Rix walked quickly to the old building, musing on the unexpectedness of the summons. He wondered if the anaesthetist, McArthur, had said anything about his lack of concentration from the week before. He was an unpleasant man, seemingly in possession of a large chip on his shoulder. He also thought he knew more than anyone else, regardless of their specialisations. It would be the sort of thing he would do.

He fixed his tie, knocked on the door of the boardroom, and entered when called.

“Mr Bettany, good morning, glad you could come. Sit down.” Sir Robert Welles, whom Rix knew reasonably well, greeted him.

Rix did so, wishing the rest of the board of trustees good morning.

Sir Robert seemed in no hurry to start. “How is your wife?” he asked, “And your children? Gentlemen, Mr Bettany has triplet sons – how old are they now?”

“Nearly three months.” Rix replied, thinking briefly of his tiny sons, now starting to become more aware of each other and of their surroundings.

After the polite small talk was out of the way, Sir Robert got down to business.

“As you must know, Mr Rayner is leaving us very soon. Would you be interested in applying for the post he is vacating?” Sir Robert went on to discuss the terms and conditions and even the remuneration as if he expected Rix to have no objection.

The mention of the triplets had discomforted him, he realised, listening to Sir Robert and the others. He was torn, Rayner’s old job meant longer hours, but would he be able to provide for the triplets – their school fees, a new and larger home, for example – without the increase in salary?

“May I think about it for a few days?” he asked, bluntly.

Sir Robert glanced at him, then at the others. “Of course,” he said, smoothly. “Please do, but we do hope you will decide to apply. Thank you for attending this meeting.”

Rix walked back to his office, deep in thought about what he should do.

He should talk to ML about it to, but he shouldn't do it if he doesn't want to ...the boys don't have to go to a private school!

Thank you Mia.

So glad Rix found words that helped both Daphne and himself

And that he's been offered the promotion - even if he decides not to take it, it's an honour and shows how high and opinon they have of him.

Poor Rix - he must just feel flattened at the moment with Peggy's illness and trying to still see something of MaryLou and the boys. Not the best time to have to make a very important decision about work

“Did Robert speak to you?” Rayner asked, after they had finished in theatre. He looked faintly bothered.

“Yes, he asked if I wanted to apply for the chief consultancy.”

“What did you say?”

“I asked for some time to think about it. I don’t know. I’ve left your car at home because I was late, are you able to come round tonight to collect? You’re welcome to stay for dinner – if you don’t have other plans.”

“I don’t. Thank you. Richard – don’t tell anyone else about what Robert said, will you? In the hospital, I mean. Keep it to yourself for now and I’ll explain later, OK?” Rayner patted Rix absently on the shoulder and left hurriedly, still frowning. Rix stared after him, wondering what was going on, but he had too much to think about already to wonder about it for long.

He soon found out what Rayner meant anyway.

At six, the two doctors met and walked the short distance to the flat.

“I’ve been doing some digging. You’re the only one they asked to apply for the job, so it looks as if they’ve already decided. Well done.” Rayner said.

“Is that why you told me not to say anything?”

“No… A lot of people in this hospital don’t like me, Richard. I don’t hold back saying what I think. I hope we are friends, not just colleagues, and I didn’t want them using you to get back at me for the way I resigned. I’m glad they haven’t let it affect your prospects.”

Rix looked at him, “We are friends, of course, Frank,” he said, remembering how Mary-Lou had once said that she thought Rayner was lonely. He felt awkward and changed the subject, “I wonder why they didn’t ask anyone else to apply… do you know why? Is it – I thought they might have chosen me because of who my uncle is. People mention it sometimes…”

“Sir James Russell, you mean?” Rayner was amused. “Completely different field. You should have more confidence in your abilities. This is your place, isn’t it?”

“Yes,” Rix opened the door with his key.

“Hello!” Mary-Lou greeted them cheerfully. “Hello Frank, nice to see you again. Do you know Rix’s cousin, Con Maynard? Con, this is Frank Rayner.”

“I think you met at Maeve’s wedding.” Rix added, picking up his eldest son, who was whimpering.

“It’s nice to see you again.” Con said, shaking hands.

“And you, Miss Maynard.” Rayner replied.

They chatted in the sitting room until dinner and played with the triplets, who gurgled happily and rolled around on their blanket on the floor.

“Sure you don’t mind Frank coming round?” Rix asked, as he went into the kitchen to kiss Mary-Lou as she finished preparing their meal.

“Of course not, it’s nice to see him again. And have you noticed how well he’s getting on with Con?” Mary-Lou replied with a smile.

“Really? I hadn’t.” Rix glanced back into the living-room, where they were indeed deep in conversation and Con was laughing.

Rayner and Con talked together for most of the evening and upon discovering that Con lived near to Regent’s Park, offered her a lift home that she accepted, shyly. He himself was privately thinking how attractive she was; Con had a friendly, assuming manner that was very charming and she was a pretty girl.

They left early, Rayner could see that the Bettanys wanted to discuss Rix’s promotion. The two of them made their leave and went outside.

“Are you sure I’m not taking you out of your way?” Con asked, as he opened the car door for her.

“Not at all, I’m in Hampstead, so it’s no problem.” Rayner started his Zodiac and pulled away from the kerb. “Are you staying in London permanently?”

“I think so. I do like it here. I’m writing a novel.” Con said, feeling surprised that she was telling him this. She hadn’t even told her sisters that she was attempting another book. He was interested though, and she felt glad she had told him.

Only one thing disconcerted her, the presence of a wedding ring on his finger, which she had only just noticed. He tapped it against the steering wheel unconsciously as he waited to pull out onto Tower Bridge.

She looked away. Why is it always married men, she thought, miserably. What’s wrong with me?

She lapsed into silence, which Rayner attributed to tiredness. He himself was wondering if he could find the words to ask if he could see her again and what she would say.

Fret not, OOAO to the rescue... Very Happy

“It’s this house – the one with the green door.” Con said. Rayner pulled over and she turned to open the car door, struggling a little, as the lock was stiff.

“Here, let me,” Rayner leant over to open the door. “I’ll wait to see you inside.”

“It’s fine, don’t worry.” Con said, blushing again. His face was very close to hers. Idiot, she told herself. He’s not interested in you. “It’s late, I don’t want to keep you from your home.”

“Goodnight, then.” Rayner replied, cursing himself for not getting out and opening the door for her properly. He hesitated, “Miss Maynard…” he began, but she had closed the car door behind her and hadn’t heard.

He waited to see her unlock the green door and close it behind her, and pulled away, putting his foot down, annoyed with himself.

He can’t wait to leave, Con thought, as she watched him speed away from the window.

*

Rix and Mary-Lou had spent an hour discussing the promotion and then the plans for settling the Wintertons into Carn Beg on Friday. Rix had managed to take the day off from work.

“We can go to Armiford by train and David’s coming to meet us with his car and we can get a taxi.” Rix was glad to leave the subject, Mary-Lou noticed. “It was a good idea of yours, Peg’s thrilled by the idea of going away for three weeks, just her and Giles and the kids. They’re going to tell the kids when they get there.”

“Oh those poor children…” Mary-Lou glanced in the direction of the nursery.

“Mother wasn’t very happy about it – she wanted them to go to the Quadrant – but they do need time alone, I think. I don’t think Giles has accepted what’s going to happen… I’m going to see if he’ll talk to me on Friday.”

“You’ve got a lot on your plate. I wish they’d waited to ask you about this new job.” Mary-Lou said, leaning against him as he put his arm around her. “What happens if you turn it down?”

“I don’t know. They’ll get someone else in, I expect. From another department or an external candidate. I wish Frank was staying on.” Rix frowned, “I don’t think he thinks I’m good enough to take over.”

“I’m sure not. It’s a shame he’s leaving. Do you think he and Con..?”

Rix grinned at her, “Stop matchmaking. Mother does it to Jack when he’s home and he hates it.”

“I’m not matchmaking!” Mary-Lou said, indignantly. “It was clear they like each other, and if that’s the case, why shouldn’t we help them a little? It just saves time.”

“I suppose. She might be too young for him, though. And I remember someone telling me how much he adored his wife… I’d just leave it for them to work out between themselves. I know you like to interfere – oh all right, help then! – but if it’s meant to happen, it will.”

“Oh, all right.” Mary-Lou sighed, but inwardly she was determined to see if she could help – just a tiny bit.

“Bettany. Is it true you’re going to head this section?” McArthur asked the next morning, as Rix went for coffee in the doctors’ lounge.

“I don’t know what you mean,” he said, collecting coffee for himself and Rayner and Toby Forrest. They were busy and he didn’t have time for this discussion.

“Of course you know what I mean.” McArthur said, sensing his discomfort and deciding to challenge him. “Walden said Sir Robert asked you to apply.”

“Even if I did apply, I mightn’t get it.” Rix said vaguely, trying to get past.

McArthur held his ground, “It must be nice to have the right background and the right relatives. I hear your uncle knows Members of the Board - old Andrews and Markham, for example. Friends in high places. And we all know how tight Rayner is with Sir Robert. Or was, I should say. It’s very nice of them to get you a chief consultancy,” he finished, spitefully.

“Excuse me.” Rix managed to get past, and go back to the office, where he sat for the next half-hour, listening to the discussion of the rota and inwardly reflecting on McArthur’s words.

Could it be true? He doubted that Jem would bother to pull strings for him but knew that he had done for David in the past, when he had made that appalling start at medical school. It could have happened, he thought, but it wasn’t likely.

“And is Wednesday all right?” Rayner asked him, quite sharply. He had been in a bad mood all morning and he hated inattention.

“Fine.” Rix said, at once, going red.

“Good. You can write it up Thursday morning then. Right, thank you, that’s settled. Toby, you might as well take your lunch hour now – you don’t need to be back until two.” Rayner said, shuffling all his papers together.

Rix looked down at his blank papers and sighed, “I’m sorry, Frank. Can I see the schedule again?”

“I knew you weren’t listening. Is it your sister? Bad news?”

“No – just something someone said. It doesn’t matter.” Rix said, frantically scribbling.

Rayner looked at him and wondered if he could mention something about Con. He had been thinking about her all morning, wondering – and hoping.

#99:  Author: MiaLocation: London PostPosted: Mon Oct 10, 2005 4:08 pm

Sorry to spree

That evening, Rix went to see Peggy at Maeve’s house at Belgravia, taking Mary-Lou and the triplets with him. Peggy looked tired, but she smiled when she saw them and insisted on holding her godson, James, for most of the evening.

Con was also there and Peggy seemed to be enjoying the company. Mary-Lou joined them and the three of them, together with Maeve, reminisced about their schooldays. Maeve was subdued and Giles, when Rix spoke to him, confirmed that all of the family had now been told about Peggy’s illness.

“We’ve had a lot of telegrams,” he said, showing them to his brother-in-law. “A lot of people have said they’ll come and visit. Maeve was very upset, but I think she’s coping better now. Your mother phones up quite a lot. Richard – Peggy said you told her a lot of things that were going to happen, from your experience… I wondered if you would tell me?”

That’s something new, Rix thought, as he agreed.

“Thanks. I know I’ve not wanted to talk about it before,” Giles said, seeming to read his mind, “But it’s so very hard… I really don’t know what I’ll do when she’s gone.”

“You should concentrate on the time you have left together.” Rix said, “She’s told me that’s what she wants, just to spend time with you and the children.”

“I’ve not been much of a husband to her,” Giles said, his eyes filling with tears. “I’ve been away so much – she never complained, but I’ll always regret it.”

“Why should you regret it? You made her happy. This is a lot of telegrams… Who are they all from?” Rix asked, looking at them all. There had to be about nine in total.

“Read them – your aunts, this is from your cousin in Kenya… I hadn’t realised –” Giles choked a little, “How many people are going to miss her when she’s gone.”

“Giles, you can’t go on like this, you can’t mourn her already. As I said, concentrate on the time you have left…”

“I’ll try. Thanks.” Giles made quite a hurried exit, leaving Rix staring after him, wondering if he should follow. He had the idea that Giles wouldn’t want him to do so.

“Rix, hello.” Con came over, with baby Thomas in her arms.

“Hello.” Rix bent to kiss her.

“Thanks for asking me to dinner last night,” she said, playing with a loose strand of her dark hair. “It was nice to meet your friend.”

“You’re welcome.” Rix said, grinning at her. He saw that Mary-Lou was correct in her theory – at least where Con was concerned.

“It was good of him to drive me home. Have you known him long?” Con bit her lip, wondering if her interest was too obvious.

“A couple of years – I did a surgical rotation when I was twenty-two, I think, so seven years. We’ve only really been friends for a year or so. He can’t live far from you.”

“No.” Con wondered what her cousin thought of her, asking after a married man. She also wondered what her parents would say if they ever found out.

As it happened, it was only Thursday, two days later, when Con saw Francis Rayner again and it was an entirely coincidental meeting. She had applied for and been offered a part-time secretarial post in an office just off Oxford Street. That day, she decided to spend her lunch hour looking around the shops.

It was very enjoyable. Con daydreamed her way around Selfridges, imagining she had the money to buy some of the lovely things on display. A salesgirl offered her a squirt of a particularly nice scent and another let her try some lipstick.

She was in the book section when she saw him. He was talking to one of the sales assistants and had his back to her, but she recognised him and her heart seemed to beat faster.

She stood there, wondering whether or not to say hello, when he turned and saw her, hesitated for a fraction of a second, then came over to her.

“Miss Maynard, how nice to see you,” he said, smiling, taking her hand in his. Con greeted him, shyly and they exchanged small talk.

“Do you have a lot of shopping to do?” he asked after a short while, “or would you be able to join me for lunch? I have the afternoon free.”

“I’m so sorry,” Con said, half-regretful but half-relieved. He was still wearing his gold wedding band and she glanced at it, biting her lip. “I’ve only got ten minutes left of my lunch hour.”

Disappointment flashed across his face, “That’s a shame… Maybe another time,” he said, politely, picking up his parcel of books and preparing to leave.

“Oh yes, that would be nice.” Con said, pleasantly, but firmly. “Would your wife be able to join us?”

“My wife?” He looked stricken.

“Yes,” she continued, nervously. “I’m looking forward to meeting her.”

“I’m sorry – she died in ’52.” Rayner said, tersely.

“No, I’m sorry.” Con was scarlet. “I-I didn’t mean… I thought…I’m sorry about your wife.” She finished awkwardly, wondering if she could ever learn to be tactful or if there was just no hope for her. Not only had she brought up the subject of his late wife, obviously a painful one, she regretted the pointed way she had spoken to him. He’d really only asked her to lunch and she had reacted as if he was an adulterer.

“No, I’m sorry, I thought your cousin would have said – please, Miss Maynard, don’t worry about it,” Rayner looked down at his left hand, with dawning comprehension, then met her eye. “Could I walk you to your office?” he asked.

”Thank you – that would be nice.” Con said, and they left the shop together.

Oxford Street was busy and noisy; conversation was difficult but their silence wasn’t awkward. Con did notice he kept glancing at his wedding band, as if seeing it for the first time. She wondered what he was thinking; his expression was inscrutable.

She looked at her watch and made a decision.

“I’m on my own at the office this afternoon,” she said, as they turned into a quieter side street that led back to her building, “Would you be able to stay for coffee?”

“Thank you, I’d love to,” he said, seeming to wake out of his reverie.

Over coffee he told her about his wife. He hadn’t meant to – he just found himself doing so. He was hesitant at first, but it was a relief to talk about it - at first, anyway.

“I met Elizabeth when I was eighteen, it was just before the end of the War. I only served nine months in all – Navy – and I spent most of my time assisting the PMO because my father was a doctor. Anyway, Elizabeth was his daughter, and we got married just before VE Day, three days after my nineteenth birthday. When I could leave the Service, I started my medical training properly and we had a son – Michael – in 1946. We didn’t have much money but we were all right. My father wasn’t very happy about it, but nothing I did ever pleased him. He died in 1950 and we moved into his house.

“It was quite hard, I was studying and working long hours, I barely saw them. I can see now how lonely she must have been, stuck in that house with only a small boy for company. I think I understand why she did what she did…” he trailed off and stood up, “Miss Maynard, I am sorry, I never meant to burden you with this – I must go. Thank you for the coffee.”

It's nearly the same age gap as me and my fiancé, as it's twelve and a quarter years between us.

Thanks, Mia. I'm glad Rayner and Con have cleared the air.

I'm a bit of an EBD with ages, but if Con is 23 and Rix is 29 (which I think is right Confused ) then R is 36. Here's another little bit

“Why on earth didn’t you tell me?” Con asked Mary-Lou, later that evening. She had left work and taken the Underground straight round to the Bettanys’ flat. “I could kill Rix. It was such an awkward situation.”

“I’m sorry we didn’t tell you he was a widower… It just never came up.” Mary-Lou said. “I don’t think even Rix knows what happened. He told me, at Maeve’s wedding, that she had died in an accident, but he didn’t go into the details. He doesn’t seem to talk about himself very much – of course, he may do with Rix, but I don’t know him that well myself. Did he tell you all about his wife?”

“He only told me that she died ten years ago.” Con wasn’t willing to tell Mary-Lou any more – not that she knew much, she reflected privately.

“How sad.” Mary-Lou said, passing the plates to Con, who was helping her set the table. “And his son as well – he told me he died as well. It must’ve been the same accident.”

“Oh, I hadn’t realised… No wonder he was so upset.” Con said, stricken. “I thought he was away at school, or something. How awful!”

You really like him, don’t you? Mary-Lou thought, and was about to say something when Rix arrived home and the moment was lost.

Yes that's right Smile Here's some more

“I’m sorry, I’m going to have to go in to the hospital tomorrow – and I’ve got some stuff to finish tonight as well.” Rix said, apologetically, as they ate.

“What time is the train?” Mary-Lou asked, resignedly. The Bettanys were going to spend the weekend at Carn Beg, settling the Wintertons in, at Peggy’s request. They had decided to go by train early on Friday morning. Giles had procured a car and was driving his own family.

“Quarter past ten. It’s fine – I literally have to hand these papers over to Frank and run back. Or I could meet you at Euston… You could get a taxi and I’ll meet you by the taxi rank.”

“Couldn’t I take them in for you?” Con asked, biting her lip. “I’ve the day off tomorrow as well. I could take them home with me tonight and drop them off tomorrow morning.”

Rix looked doubtful, “It’s a long way for you to come…” he began, but Mary-Lou butted in.

“Thank you, Con. I’d be dreading taking a taxi with the boys and all the cases. That’s very good of you. We could have a chat while Rix finishes with them and then, as you say, you can take them in tomorrow.”

She saw Rix about to speak, but kicked him under the table. He bit back an exclamation, but luckily Con had gone into one of her dreams and didn’t notice.

“What did you kick me for?” he asked, later, when Con had left with his papers in her handbag and they were alone.

“I didn’t mean to kick you that hard – but honestly! You were about to say Con didn’t need to take your work in, weren’t you?”

“So? It’s miles for her to come and it’s ten minutes from here… It doesn’t make sense. What are you smirking at me like that for?”

“Can’t you see it? You are dense sometimes,” she teased. “I’m just helping things along.”

“I don’t think you should interfere… Frank might not be happy about it. He doesn’t talk about himself, hardly ever… I don’t know, Mary-Lou. Still, I expect he’ll be in surgery tomorrow – I was just going to leave that paperwork with Toby. It’ll be fine.”

“He does like her, Rix. She saw him today when she was out and he asked her to lunch and told her a little about meeting his wife. She thought he was still married because he still wears his wedding ring. Anyway, she knows differently now and I won’t need do anything else.” Mary-Lou finished, a touch complacently.

Con felt nervous as she approached the receptionist at the hospital on Friday; she had worried so much about what to wear that she was late.

“Good morning,” the receptionist said, “Can I help?”

“I’ve got a package – for Dr Rayner.”

“Department?”

“I don’t know…” Con’s smile faltered.

The girl sighed, “Do you know vaguely what he does?”

“I know he’s a surgeon.” Con said, feeling useless. The girl opened her directory and started flicking through it.

“He’ll be Mr Rayner, then. Here we go, you’re lucky, he’s the only one of that name – oh, there’s two departments listed. He must be seconded somewhere. Would you like to leave the package with me?”

“I’d prefer to give it to him myself, if – if you don’t mind.” Con said, worriedly. It was all going so wrong!

“I’ll try his line.” The receptionist frowned and telephoned. She seemed to speak to someone for quite a long time.

“Neuro-surgery say he’s left. He doesn’t work here anymore. Sorry,” she said, not sounding sorry at all.

“But he can’t have! I mean, he works in Dr – I mean, Mr Bettany’s department. That’s the department I need. Is he in your book? Richard Bettany.”

“He’s listed twice as well, the same departments… I’ll try Oncology.”

Con surreptitiously crossed her fingers as the receptionist made another phone call. She seemed to have been successful.

“There’s a young lady to see you, Mr Rayner – a delivery. Yes… No, it has to be personally delivered, apparently. One moment – ” she turned to Con, “Name?”

“Con Maynard.” Con said, hoping that he would want to see her. It seemed like an eternity before the receptionist hung up and turned back to her.

“He’s on his way down. You can take a seat over there,” she indicated some seats before returning to her work.

“Thank you,” Con said, going to sit down, keeping her fingers crossed that Rayner would be pleased to see her.

Rayner was very busy, he had several reports to write, a meeting with the Board, a lecture to give at Guy’s Hospital to a group of medical students and an operation scheduled for three o’clock that afternoon. He was not in the best of moods. Toby Forrest, who shared his office, had kept his head down at his own desk for most of the morning, revising for his forthcoming RCS examination* and trying not to make his senior colleague any more irascible than he already was.

It was quiet in the office, the only sound was Rayner’s pen scratching as he wrote. They both started, therefore, as the telephone rang, shrilly. Rayner gave a sigh and answered it.

Toby looked back at his notes and didn’t hear the conversation, but when Rayner replaced the receiver he looked up and was surprised to see Rayner staring into space, an odd expression on his face.

“Is there something wrong?” he asked, full of curiosity.

“No.” Rayner said, after a moment. “I’m just going out for a minute. Here, can you give these papers to Robert? And if you could tell him I might be late for the meeting at eleven… thank you.” He left the office very quickly.

He paused outside the reception area, telling himself firmly not to get his hopes up. He shouldn’t have told her about Elizabeth and Michael, it was mortifying to think back on how close he had come to telling her everything, things he had never told anyone. She had been sympathetic, though… Rayner opened the door and strode into the reception area with an outward confidence that did not match the way he was feeling inside.

“Hello,” he said, looking down at her – although she was tall, he did not have far to look – and smiling.

“Hello… I hope you don’t mind me coming here –” Con began, uncertainly. “I’ve brought this for you, Rix said it was urgent… I offered to bring it here because of their train.”

“Thank you, of course I don’t mind.” How can you think I mind?, he thought, thinking how pretty she was. “How very kind of you – but it’s a long journey back for you to your office.”

“I don’t work on Fridays,” she said, relaxing a little, “I thought I’d have a walk – I don’t really know this area, apart from where Rix and Mary-Lou live, and I thought I’d go and have a look around and maybe have some lunch,” she looked at him and decided that even if he said no, or made an excuse, at least she would know. “I don’t suppose you could join me for lunch?”

He didn’t hesitate, “I’d be delighted. Thank you. If you don’t mind, I need to make some phone calls and tell my assistant that I’m going out." Rayner mentally dismissed his meeting with the Board and urgent reports.

“Oh, of course. I could wait here for you?” she said, eagerly.

He met the receptionist’s over-interested gaze and frowned. “Why don’t you come up to my office and we can have coffee,” he said, taking the envelope from her and opening the door.

*

“Toby, this is Miss Maynard, Miss Maynard, Dr Forrest, my assistant.”

“Hello!” Toby nearly fell over in his haste to shake Con’s hand. Fancy seeing Rayner with a girl! he thought, amazed.

“Miss Maynard is Richard’s cousin.” Rayner said, uncomfortably aware that Toby, who liked women, was so much nearer to Con in age than he. “I need you to do me a favour, Toby, can you take this to Robert and this to Dr Cavendish in the Old Building, and then you’ll need to attend the Board meeting in my place – explain to Robert when you see him that I’m sending my apologies. I’m going straight to Guy’s after lunch for the lecture and I’ll be back just before four for that meningioma. Is that all right?”

“Yes, sir.” Toby left, reluctantly.

“Rix said you were very busy – if you need to postpone...” Con began, unsure now the first euphoria of his acceptance of her invite had worn off.

“I’m not that busy today,” he fibbed, “I just need to forward your cousin’s work to someone at the British Medical Journal and then we can go – Coffee?”

“Yes please.” Con smiled and he left to collect it.

She took the opportunity to look around the room, it was quite large and his desk was untidy and covered with papers – he was clearly very busy and she felt flattered that he was prepared to leave it all in order to come out for lunch with her.

“Where are we going?” Alan asked his father, nervously. Giles had been checking under the bonnet of the hired car for what seemed like hours, “Are we going to see Granny and Grandpa?”

Giles sighed and closed the car bonnet firmly, “No, we’re going to your uncle’s house in Howells, where Mummy used to go to school. Have you finished your packing?”

Alan nodded, “Why are we going there?”

“For a holiday. We’ll spend this weekend there with Aunt and Uncle and the triplets and then we’ll have three or four weeks there, just us.” Giles said, “Run and fetch your case and I’ll put it in the boot.”

“Yes, Daddy.” Alan ran off at once. Giles watched him go, wondering if his brother-in-law was right in his assumptions that Alan would understand about his mother’s impending death; he still seemed such a baby.

Peggy came outside with baby Amy next to her. Amy had just started to walk, and was confident only when hanging onto someone. Giles scooped her up in his arms and she gave a delighted giggle.

“When are we leaving, darling?” Peggy asked. She looked pale and had black smudges under her eyes.

“As soon as I’ve loaded up, if you’re ready. We’ll need to leave now really, to get there in time to meet your brother.”

“Fine, I’m ready… You don’t mind Rix and Mary-Lou staying for the weekend, do you? It’s just Rix is so good with the children and if we’re going to tell them…”

“And I’m not good with them, I suppose?” Giles cut across her, hurt. “I’m their father, aren’t I?”

“I didn’t mean that – don’t let’s row, Giles. I can’t stand it at the moment.” Peggy said, quietly and he was immediately filled with remorse.

“I’m sorry,” he said, miserably.

“It’s fine. Don’t worry.” Peggy squeezed his hand, and turned to settle Amy into the car.

Giles deposited his family at Carn Beg, where Peggy and the children were delighted to see David waiting on the drive in his new car, a scarlet E-type Jaguar, David's pride and joy.

“What do you think?” he asked Giles, who made the right admiring noises but was too worried about the forthcoming weekend to sound convincing. David kissed Peggy and chased the children around the orchard, making them squeal and giggle.

“I’d better go and pick Rix up,” David said, presently.

“He’s got Mary-Lou and the triplets with him,” Peggy laughed, “I don’t think they’ll fit in your new car.”

“No – I hadn’t realised they were all coming.” David said, sounding pleased.

“I’ll go,” Giles said, picking up his car keys.

*

The train journey had been a bit of a trial; Mary-Lou was glad when they reached Armiford. They were lucky to get a porter who carried their case into the car park, leaving Rix and Mary-Lou with the triplets.

“Where’s David?” Mary-Lou asked, perching herself on the edge of one of the suitcase.

“There – oh, it’s Giles. Hello Giles, how are you?” Rix said, as Giles pulled alongside them and got out to help with the luggage and babies. “How are Peg and the kids?”

“Fine – Peggy had a headache earlier, but she managed to sleep in the car and she says she feels better. The children are fine, they were playing with David in the orchard when I left.”

Mary-Lou got into the front passenger seat next to him. She noticed Giles looked tired and felt sorry for him and resolved to help him if she could.

She was also wondering about seeing Peggy again, the last few times they had met had been difficult and although that was now partly explained, Mary-Lou wondered if she dared discuss the issues concerned.

*
“Uncle Rix, come and see! I’m driving David’s car!” Alan ran up to them, nearly falling under the wheels of his father’s car. Giles gave an angry exclamation - whether at Alan’s carelessness or at the way he hadn’t called for his father to see what he was doing, the Bettanys didn’t know - and braked sharply. The triplets yelled at being so rudely awakened from their sleep.

“Don’t ever do that again!” Giles shouted out of the car window, “You could have been killed…” he went very white. The next minute he was out of the car and heading towards the house, as if he didn’t trust himself to stay near his son.

As Alan burst into tears, Rix and Mary-Lou looked at one another in alarm.

“What happened?” David asked, approaching them and regarding the four crying children with a certain amount of distaste.

Rix crouched next to his nephew, “Alan ran in front of the car – which you must never do again, by the way, Alan, do you understand - ”

“And Winterton yelled, I presume,” David said, carelessly. “Mop up, Alan, won’t you? I’ll take you out for a ride around the lane if you do, there’s a good boy. Go and wait for me in the car, will you? There’s a good chap.”

“Don’t speak about his father in front of him like that,” Rix said, annoyed, as Alan, much cheered, ran back to the car.

“Well, he is unreasonable, isn’t he? Kids do run around like that. He should’ve been driving more carefully.” David said, cheerfully. "Come on, cheer up, Peg wants to see you. She's got some good news, which I also know about cos Mother told me, but Peg wants to be the one to tell you."

Poor Giles, I'm starting to feel quite sorry for him. But what could Peggy's good news possibly be?

#202:  Author: MiaLocation: London PostPosted: Thu Oct 20, 2005 9:58 pm

David isn't meant to be too bad, just a bit thoughtless.. Crying or Very sad

For a second, Rix felt as if he almost couldn’t breathe. He gripped David’s arm, “Good news? You mean…”

“Oh, no… No. I’m sorry.” David looked horrified. “Look, I’m so sorry… I didn’t mean to get your hopes up like that.”

“No… It’s not your fault, I just thought… I-I hoped… What is this news then?”

“Sybs is coming home for a visit, to see Peggy mainly. She’s flying over in three weeks’ time.” David said. “Look, if you need to talk to someone…” he added, awkwardly.

“No, I’m fine. But thanks. I’ll go and see her now and I suppose I’d better speak to Giles too.” Rix went into the house, looking distracted, leaving David furious at himself.

*head desks*

Well at least he wasn't trying to be mean, he's allowed to be excited about seeing his sister (in fact it's quite sweet) but possibly someone needs to tell him about tact (and not Mary Lou on her past record, maybe Con or Rix could have a not so gentle word)

Thanks Mia!

“I’m glad you’re here,” Peggy said, as he bent to kiss her. “Where are my nephews? Oh, hello, Mary-Lou, it’s nice to see you. Thank you so much for letting us stay here. Rix, did David tell you about Sybil and Uncle Jem and Auntie Madge coming to visit?”

“No… When is that?” Rix sat down next to her, glad she was so pleased about it. Mary-Lou also seemed delighted at the idea of seeing the Russells again.

“Oh, in about three weeks’ time… They’re getting big aren’t they? And still identical… You’ll have fun when they’re on their feet, Mary-Lou. This is such a lovely house… “

Rix left the two of them talking and went to take their case upstairs. Giles was on the landing, looking out of the window at David and the children, who were all in the red car. The sound of their voices carried and they sounded excited and happy. Giles’s expression was dark.

“Peggy seems better.” Rix said, after he had seen what Giles was upset about. “I think it was a good idea for you to come here. Just you and the children after this weekend. I’ll tell David you want some time alone.”

“Thanks.” Giles said, relaxing a little.

They ate dinner together in the dining room and afterwards Rix and David strolled down to the Howells Arms. Rix had invited Giles, but he had refused. Mary-Lou had also said no, announcing her attention to have an early night.

David apologised again as he bought their drinks.

“It doesn’t matter, Davy, honestly. It was stupid of me to think that… Anyway, where’s Melissa?” He managed to remember the name of David's girlfriend with some difficulty.

“We broke up. I’ve had to work some long hours recently at the San and she didn’t like it. I’ve got to sort out some more patients before Dad comes.” David settled down for a long discussion about the San and his problems with it, which mainly involved the impending visit of Jem and Madge.

Toby Forrest was fed up. He had been told to sit in the corridor as the Board meeting discussed Rayner’s successor, apparently he wasn’t senior enough for most of the agenda items and the trustees were obviously annoyed he had been sent in Rayner’s place. When he had told them that Rayner had missed the meeting so he could go for lunch, they had all but accused him of lying – it was unheard of!

Toby sighed and wandered over to the window to look out on the Thames, grey in the April drizzle, and the Houses of Parliament directly opposite. He had his exam in two months’ time and he still felt he was unprepared. He would have welcomed this morning to go over his notes, but no, he was standing like an idiot in this draughty corridor while Rayner took that gorgeous girl to lunch.

*

Francis Rayner hadn’t thought about the meeting for one minute, he was far too interested in hearing Con Maynard speak about her favourite places in London. He had thought long and hard about where to take her, but eventually decided on the Mirabelle and they had taken a taxi to Mayfair. The conversation had been going well, so far. He wondered if she would agree to his suggestion that they go for dinner one night or if he was reading too much into her visit and agreement to have lunch.

Con herself was feeling a little light-headed from the two glasses of wine she had drunk. She had not expected this type of restaurant and felt a little awed by her surroundings, although he had put her at ease. The waiter had also been impressed by her fluent French and was being charming and constantly re-filling her glass. Nevertheless, she wished she had dressed like some of the other ladies in the room and worried if he could tell how unused she was to being in this type of place.

The bill arrived and he took care of it, smiling at her protests that she had asked him. “You can pay next time,” he said, carelessly, then immediately wished he hadn’t mentioned another time. What if she wasn’t interested?

Con was secretly thrilled; she smiled back, “Of course I will, thank you. It was lovely,” she said.

“My pleasure,” he stood up and she followed suit, unfortunately as she tried to walk away from the table she caught the heel of her shoe on the edge of the tablecloth and went flying, landing with a thud at his feet.

“Are you all right?” he helped her back onto her feet at once, even as the waiter exclaimed and nearby diners turned to look at her.

She nodded, crimson with embarrassment. He understood how she was feeling, took her hand and they left as fast as they could. When they were on Curzon Street, he asked her again if she was all right; he didn’t want to let go of her hand.

She looked up at him, her blushes had subsided and his face was very close to hers. The apologies on her lips never came, as he leant forward and kissed her.

He drew back, “I’m sorry, Miss Maynard, I didn’t mean…”

“I’m glad,” Con said, “Please stop calling me Miss Maynard, won’t you? My name is Con. Do you have to go back to work?”

He nodded, but drew her close to him, “I wish I didn’t have to,” he said.

“Can I see you after you finish?” Con wondered where the words were coming from, but she knew she didn’t want to leave him just yet. “Could – could we have dinner?”

He nodded, feeling something like happiness wash over him, he hadn’t been this happy for a long time, he realised.

“I’ve got to give a lecture at half past two. You could come and sit in the hall,” he said, “If you wanted. I’ve got an operation at four though.”

“I’d love to hear your lecture,” she smiled. “And I could go shopping at four so I could cook for you in my flat. It’s only small, though, and not very nice.”

“I’m sure it’s perfect,” he reached out to stroke the side of her face and smooth back the dark curls that had fallen down to frame her face.

“If your lecture is at half-two, we really should go,” she said, reluctantly, looking at her watch. “Are you sure you don’t mind me tagging along?”

“Of course not,” he kissed her again, reluctantly hailing a passing taxi.

*

She enjoyed listening to him lecture, even if she didn’t understand a word of it. She sat in the front row and watched him. He was still wearing his wedding ring, she noticed, but it didn’t bother her anymore now she knew his wife had passed away. How awful for him, she thought, with sympathy.

The others listening to him were all second-year Medical students, they had looked at her with interest as they filed in and she had felt self-conscious. Now they were all feverishly scribbling and paying her no attention.

After the lecture, he walked her to London Bridge station and she gave him her address. He kissed her once more before she boarded her train and he left to go back to his hospital. Each was looking forward to seeing the other again with some of the doubts dispelled.

This was a really stupid idea, Con thought, as she checked on the food she was preparing for dinner in her tiny kitchen. Although her room was pleasant and airy and she had managed to make it look nice, it was still very small. She firmly closed the door to her minute bedroom, even though she was sure he wouldn’t treat her as Laurie had. She frowned, remembering things had tried hard not to think about, thinking how different her life could have been now.

She wished she had someone to talk to about it, but there was no one. Rix maybe, if he wasn’t so busy, but he had to think about Peggy’s illness now. Mary-Lou didn’t know, Rix hadn’t told her and Mary-Lou herself had not asked. Len and Margot would both be horrified by the whole situation and she could hardly speak to Laurie. Their last meeting, at the triplets’ christening, had been incredibly awkward. There was also no way in the world she could tell her parents.

Con went to her bedroom and changed, pausing for a second to open a drawer and look at the statue of Our Lady her mother had sent her when she had been told that Con had gone to live in London. There was a letter somewhere too, full of love and encouragement about her writing. Con had shoved them into a drawer, ashamed of herself, though later she had read the letter and put it away in her case.

She hadn’t attended Mass since she had moved to London. She had stayed with Maeve for the first few months and, in order to avoid her cousin’s comments and concern, had left at the usual time and walked around the parks. Once she had moved to her own flat, she had been able to do as she pleased.

#256:  Author: MiaLocation: London PostPosted: Wed Oct 26, 2005 3:09 pm

Alan woke up suddenly with the usual feeling of shame. He’d done it again and in Auntie Mary-Lou’s house as well.

He got out of bed, turned on the light and started to pull the wet sheets from the bed, fighting tears. When this had last happened they had been in Canada and it didn’t matter so much there, but now… and after he’d promised Daddy not to worry Mummy as well.

The sheet was tucked in firmly, so he pulled harder, it gave way with a ripping noise and the sheet tore, making him fall over with a thud. He stood up and stared at it in horror.

His father’s angry face in his mind, he miserably hunted through his drawers for clean pyjamas, hoping he hadn’t wakened him. The clock on the wall said twelve and lately his parents had been going to bed early. He wondered if his Auntie would be angry about the sheet.

“Alan? Are you OK?” His door opened.

He froze, but relaxed a little when he saw it was his uncle. At least he might not be as angry as his father would certainly be.

“I’m sorry… I wet it,” he confessed, ashamedly. “And then I tore it and fell over. I-I didn’t mean to do it. Don’t – don’t tell Daddy… He’ll be angry…”

“It’s fine, I’ll help.” Rix said tersely, managing to pull the sheet off the bed.

“Are you angry with me?” Alan asked miserably.

#261:  Author: MiaLocation: London PostPosted: Wed Oct 26, 2005 4:36 pm

“Of course I’m not angry with you,” Rix said at once, abandoning the bed to go to his nephew and vowing to himself that he would never make his own children feel so unloved and alone. “It’s nothing to worry about, honestly. Sheets and pyjamas aren’t important. Did you hurt yourself when you fell over?”

“No,” Alan started to cry, “Daddy will be angry with me.”

“No he won’t, Alan, your Daddy loves you very much and he’s not going to be angry over an old sheet. Stop crying, there’s no need.”

“But he shouted today…”

“That was because you ran out in front of the car and he was worried he would knock you over. Sometimes people shout when they’re worried, you understand?”

“Auntie’s sheet is all torn…” Alan seemed unconvinced.

“And it can be mended, can’t it? Look, run to the bathroom and get changed and then you can come and sleep in our bedroom for a treat. We’ll put the camp bed up, OK? Be really quiet so you don’t wake your sisters.”

“Will Auntie be angry at having to sew the sheet?” Alan asked, feeling better.

Rix grinned, Mary-Lou hated mending and rarely did any. “Of course she won’t,” he said, ruffling Alan’s hair. “Go on, I’ll sort this out while you get changed.”

He thought about the whole situation as he sorted out the bed linen. He knew he would have to speak to Giles about it in the morning and he hoped he would be able to find the right words.

Thanks Mia.

Poor kid!

I'm glad Rix was there to be kind to him but I hope Giles realises what he's doing soon. Rix may be a sweetheart but he's not Alan's father and it's just going to be worse once Peggy's gone otherwise.

Thank you Mia

Rayner parked around the corner from the house with the green door and sat in his car for a few minutes. He had bought Con roses and they lay on the passenger seat but now he wondered if it was too grand a gesture. They were dark pink and white, not red, but still maybe they were a bit much.

He glanced at his wedding ring wondering if he should take it off. He did so for operations with no problem, why was it so difficult now?

Making his decision, he pulled it from his finger and put it into the glove compartment, and taking the roses, he rang her doorbell.

Con came down to open it herself, she took the roses with such obvious pleasure he was glad he had brought them. She didn’t mention the absence of his ring, but he noticed her looking.

They ate the meal Con had slaved over, and talked about everything and anything. After dinner, they sat in each other’s arms until late, talking some more. He knew he had fallen hard and she felt the same; they didn’t need to tell each other as they both knew.

“I lost my son ten years ago,” he found himself telling her, even though he had not planned to do so. “He’d be sixteen now.”

“I’m sorry,” she said, squeezing his hand, her eyes full of sympathy. “What was his name?”

“Michael,” he replied, opening his wallet to show her a photograph. She took it noticing his resemblance to his father.

“Was it the same accident as your wife – Elizabeth?” she asked, hoping she didn’t sound too inquisitive.

“No, he was knocked over by a car – they found the driver later, he and his passenger didn’t stop,” he took the photograph back, his expression dark and closed. “Elizabeth blamed herself, she was in the front garden with him, but then she went in to answer the ‘phone. I don’t know why he went into the road, he knew he shouldn’t have, but he did. I didn’t blame Elizabeth, but she wouldn’t listen,” he unconsciously rubbed the third finger on his left hand.

“Francis – I’m so sorry,” Con said, nearly in tears.

“Anyway, that’s it – I’m surprised Richard didn’t tell you, but I suppose he hadn’t joined us at St Thomas’ by that point, or if he had, we didn’t know each other well. It was July. Elizabeth died the following October,” he stroked her face, gently, “I wanted to give you an explanation, but I didn’t want to spoil the evening.”

“You haven’t spoilt it,” she lifted her face for his kiss.

Baby James woke Mary-Lou up very early, she got up at one to soothe him and kiss his tear-stained little cheeks. He seemed disinclined to settle, so she lifted him out of his carrycot, noticing the camp bed and its occupant. Alan was awake and he sat up, rubbing his eyes.

“Hello! What are you doing here?” she used the undertone that she knew carried far less than a whisper would have done, Rix was still fast asleep.

“I’m sorry, Auntie, I wet my bed,” Alan confessed, looking ashamed. “Uncle Rix said I could sleep in here. I – I tore your sheet though.”

“Oh, that doesn’t matter, it’ll mend. Would you like to hold Baby for me? I can hear the others starting to wake up. I expect they want their breakfast.” Mary-Lou said.

Alan got out of bed and came over to her, sitting on the edge of the bed. Mary-Lou put James next to him, using her pillow to fence him in.

“What do they have for breakfast?” Alan asked with interest. James gurgled and stopped crying, looking up at Alan with wide blue eyes and waving his arms and legs.

“Milk for the moment – they’re too tiny to have anything else. When I’ve dealt with them I’ll go downstairs and make breakfast for everyone. Would you like to help?”

“Yes please,” Alan said, holding out a finger for James to grab hold of. “Why do babies come together please, Auntie?”

“I don’t know, darling. Sometimes God sends them together,” Mary-Lou said, cuddling Thomas.

“God sent Mummy and Uncle Rix to Granny together, didn’t he?” Alan continued, “She told me. Do babies come together or one after the other?”

“Oh, one after the other,” Mary-Lou laughed, “James came first, then Alexander, then Thomas. Don’t you remember when they were born?”

“Yes, Mummy took us to church so we could say prayers,” Alan said, unexpectedly. “She said you were very ill. She was crying.”

“Was she? I’m all better now, so God must have heard your prayers,” Mary-Lou said, cuddling him.

“Mummy cries a lot now,” Alan said, “I think it’s because I’m naughty sometimes and make Daddy shout.”

“Oh, Alan, of course it’s not. I remember when you were born, and your Granny told me how happy your parents were with you. They love you very much."

Alan looked doubtful, “Did they tell you that?” he asked.

“Of course they do. They say it all the time.” Mary-Lou’s tones invited no argument and Alan was slightly reassured.

Thank goodness OOAO was able to reassure him. I think that Giles and Peggy have handled this in the wrong way.

Yes, I can see Giles' fear, but he needs to realise that his children need far more than he is giving them.

#297:  Author: MiaLocation: London PostPosted: Sat Oct 29, 2005 11:28 pm

The weather was bright and warm for the time of year, so later that day, while the children played hide and seek with David in the old orchard, Rix did some work in the garden, where Giles joined him. The silence they shared was not uncompanionable.

“This is such a nice, peaceful place,” Giles said eventually. “It’s kind of you and Mary-Lou to let us stay here.”

“You’re welcome,” Rix stood up, “I can finish this by myself, why don’t you go and play with the kids?”

“Oh… no, it’s all right.” Giles looked over at the orchard.

“Go on, it’s nearly done. I’m going inside in a minute, anyway.” Rix practically pushed Giles over to the noisy game, and returned to the weeding, but really watching what happened.

They were too far away to hear the conversation, but he did see Giles laugh at least twice, and that the children seemed delighted that their normally silent father was able to run about and play with them.

After lunch, Peggy took Alan and Jenny to the bottom of the garden and they all sat on a rug and talked. After a while Giles joined them. Rix watched them, wondering if they were finally telling the children what was going to happen.

“You’ve done so much weeding.” Mary-Lou came up behind him, Thomas in her arms. He got up and kissed her.

“Let’s go inside,” he said, with a last glance at Peggy and her family.

“Are they telling the children?”

“I think so.” Rix and Mary-Lou drank tea at the kitchen table, while James and Alex dozed in their cots front of the fire.

“Are you all right?” Mary-Lou asked. Rix was giving Thomas his bottle, but he was very quiet.

“Yes – I don’t know. I wish I could do something. I know that was what Dad was thinking as well, what’s the point of all my years in practice if I can’t do anything to help her?”

“I’m sure he doesn’t think that, nobody does. How many hundreds of people have you helped? I know it’s horrible… When Mother died I had to pretend everything was all right for her and Verity during the day and at night I just cried and cried… And you’ve got more people to be strong for,” she finished, confusedly. “You’ve got a lot on your plate as well, with that new job and Frank leaving, and Geoff arriving on Monday evening.”

He nodded and put Thomas back into his cot, checking that the fireguard was secure. Thomas made a few baby noises but soon slept as deeply as his brothers.

“Rayner’s coming in late,” Toby Forrest told Rix as they went over the surgical schedules on Monday morning. “He spent all Friday with a girl, you know.”

“What?” Rix was irritable, the weekend had been exhausting, Alan had taken the news of his mother’s illness badly and he couldn’t shake off the feeling that he had given Peggy and Giles bad advice.

“The most gorgeous girl I’ve ever seen. He took her for lunch, she went to his lecture at Guy’s, then I think they had evening plans as well, he dashed off after the last op and now he’s coming in late today. I think he spent the weekend with her.” Toby continued speculating.

“That’s my cousin you’re talking about,” Rix snapped.

“I’m sorry… I forgot.” Toby looked abashed. “She is lovely though.”

“Can we concentrate on this? Frank – I’ve had a go at drafting the schedule for this week.” Rix said, as the door opened.

“Thanks.” Rayner said, taking the papers and flicking through them. “Forrest, can you please go and see McKay and get those patients’ files? Thank you.”

When Toby had gone, he asked after Peggy.

“She’s the same… The children know now. Well, my nieces are too young to really understand, they just talked about Heaven and Mummy being an angel, but Alan took it quite badly, he withdrew a lot, said he hated us all, that kind of thing… Maybe they shouldn’t have told him. Anyway, the schedules…”

“I think it’s for the best. When he’s older he’ll look back and be glad he was told.” Rayner said kindly, before returning to the rota.

*

Geoff had found the long train journey from Berne to London hugely enjoyable. Dr Taylor, a young doctor from the San, was returning home for a visit and had offered to see Geoff safely into Rix’s charge at Victoria. He was easy-going and willing to play game after game. Geoff was almost regretful as the train pulled into Victoria at half past five that Monday evening.

He only had a small case, Jack had sent a sizeable cheque to the Bettanys so they could see to a new outfit and his school uniform. Geoff was half excited, half apprehensive about going to school.

It was the middle of rush hour. Dr Taylor took the cases and Geoff’s hand as commuters barged past them.

“Oh hang – my train’s in three minutes! I wonder where your cousin is?” he said.

Geoff looked around, worried, but then his face lightened as he caught sight of Rix.

“Over there – I can see him!” he pointed into the crowd.

“Excellent – OK then, old man. Have a good time at school, hope it goes well!” Dr Taylor waved and darted off for the Sussex train, managing to catch it by the skin of his teeth.

“Rix!” Geoff bounced up but then stopped, as the man turned round and he saw it wasn’t Rix at all,

“Oh – I’m sorry. I thought you were someone else,” Geoff said, moving away. The commuter barely glanced at him.

With a horrible feeling in his stomach, Geoff realised that Rix wasn’t there, Dr Taylor had gone – and he was completely alone.

*g* sorry for spree

His first thought was to find a policeman, but none of the people in the station looked like the Swiss gendarmes he was used to. He bit his lip and eventually managed to fight his way through the jostling commuters and find a safe corner where he sat on his case and waited for Rix to arrive.

Geoff didn’t own a watch, but he could see the station clock. It was cold and he buttoned up his coat.

He waited for twenty minutes, then thirty, then it was quarter to seven and he had been waiting over an hour. Tears pricked his eyes and his nose hurt. He stood up, stamping his feet to warm himself, then picked up his case, deciding to walk to St Thomas’ Hospital. It couldn’t be that far away, could it? He should be able to find street signs to tell him where to go. It was obvious that Rix wasn’t coming. Geoff stood up and picked up his case.

“Are you on your own, son?” A red-faced man in a suit asked him, as he emerged from his dark corner. His voice was kind, but he smelt unpleasantly of alcohol and Geoff pulled away.

“No, my cousin’s just over there,” he said, clearly, “Thank you,” he left in a hurry and left the station, finding himself alone on the streets of London in the dark.

Rix jumped up from his seat as the tube train finally pulled into Victoria. It was crammed with people and delays had meant he was over an hour late for meeting Geoff and Dr Taylor. He hoped they had gone somewhere warm to wait, the temperature had dropped to minus figures.

He got to the concourse and looked around, but he couldn’t see them anywhere.

*

Geoff was very hungry, the sandwiches he had eaten on the train seemed a very long time ago and some of the cafés and restaurants outside the station had delicious smells coming from them. He scrabbled through his pockets, but he only had a few Swiss coins in them.

He had eventually asked a woman where St Thomas’ Hospital was, she had pointed at a bus and he had got onto it, clutching his case firmly. The conductor was upstairs and Geoff craned to look out of the window as they approached the Houses of Parliament.

“Fares,” the bus conductor demanded, coming down the stairs and stopping right in front of him, “Got your fare, son?”

Geoff stared at the conductor, in horror. He went through his pockets turning out an amazing assortment of things onto the seat, but no English coins at all.

The conductor glared at him horribly as Geoff stammered out his apologies.

“I’ll pay his fare,” A man said, handing over a sixpence and glancing at Geoff. The conductor issued the ticket and went back to his place by the stairs.

“Are you lost?” The man asked, leaning nearer. Geoff wondered what to do, he knew he shouldn’t speak to strangers, but the man had been kind enough to pay his fare. The bus turned left, sharply, onto Parliament Square, and the man took advantage of this to move nearer. “What’s your name?”

Geoff opened his mouth to answer, but there was something about the man’s expression that he didn’t think was quite – right. He looked around, the conductor was right at the other end of the bus.

The man repeated his question, starting to frown a little, but he smiled when Geoff looked up at him nervously. The smile didn’t quite reach his eyes.

“Are you running away from home?” The man persisted, “I can help if you want. I know somewhere you could go.” He reached out to take hold of Geoff’s arm, but Geoff pulled away, frightened now.

See how kind I am not leaving mean cliffs for hours! Wink

The bus stopped at a set of traffic lights and Geoff saw his advantage. He got to his feet, dashed past the conductor and dived off the bus. The conductor gave a shout and Geoff lost his balance and fell onto the pavement, bumping his head and landing right at the feet of a man who walked with the aid of a stick and who was just leaving the House of Lords. His case burst open and the contents went everywhere.

Geoff burst into tears as the young man knelt with some difficulty to see to him. The bus drove off, the conductor shaking his head at Geoff's recklessness for his own safety.

“Are you all right? You really banged your head. I’m a doctor. Can you sit up?”

Geoff sat up, trying to choke down his sobs, “I need to go to St Thomas’ Hospital,” he managed.

“I don’t think you’re hurt that badly,” the man grinned, “Where’s your mother?”

“No, I need to meet my cousin, he works there,” Geoff said, as two men in uniforms came up to see what the commotion was.

“Ah, I see. We can telephone him, if you like … He’s fine, he bumped his head. I’ll see to him,” he turned to the uniformed men who were staring.

“Very good, my Lord,” one of them said, while the younger of the two put everything back into the case.

“What’s your name?” the man asked, helping Geoff up.

“Geoffrey Maynard… There was a man on the bus, he tried to grab me… I’m sorry I knocked you over.”

“It doesn’t matter – a man on the bus you say? Did he say anything to you?”

Geoff told the man the whole story as they walked past a statue of Richard I and into the House through the Peers’ Entrance. The man listened carefully then said a few words to the other men, who nodded and disappeared at once.

Geoff looked around the room as they entered it, there were some other men and a few ladies in there, deep in conversation. Geoff looked at his coat, muddy from rolling in a puddle with embarrassment, but a man came forward swiftly to take it from him as they sat down.

“Sit down, Geoffrey… Now, tell me your cousin’s name and I’ll see if I can get hold of him. Did he ask you to meet him at St Thomas’?”

“Nooo.” Geoff confessed, “He was s’posed to meet me at the station, but he didn’t come. I waited for hours.”

“My dear boy, he must be frantic! I’ll see if I can reach him at the hospital and if not, I’ll call the station. What’s his name?”

“Rix Bettany.” Geoff said, starting to realise that leaving the station might not have been the best idea.

The man stood up at once, amazement on his face.

“You’re Richard’s cousin? But… I must telephone him,” he said, leaving Geoff in his chair in front of the fire.

Thanks, Mia. I'm glad the man was so kind and helpful and he knows Rix. Hopefully Geoff will be ok now and he will be able to find Rix soon.

Such short memories! Wink

He was soon back, with their coats.

“They said he left hours ago. I think it’s best if we go back to Victoria and see if we can find him. Give me your case – we’ll take a taxi, I think.”

“Thank you – I don’t know your name,” Geoff said.

“Sorry! You can call me Daniel. Daniel Lyndhurst. Do you know your cousin Maeve’s husband?”

Geoff nodded, reassured.

“Well, he’s my cousin. So we’re practically related, aren’t we?”

They climbed into a taxi and Daniel told the driver their destination.

“What was that place? Do you work there?” Geoff asked, starting to feel drowsy. The cab was warm compared to the bitter temperatures outside.

“The House of Lords, I have to go there sometimes, yes, but I work at Great Ormond Street Hospital most of the time. Are you one of the Swiss cousins? I think I’ve met your father.”

“We live in Switzerland, but I’ve got to go to school now.” Geoff replied. “Mamma said that Rix and Mary-Lou will take me to get my uniform and see me for holidays.”

It didn’t take too long to reach Victoria. Daniel and Geoff entered the concourse and looked around.

*

Rix had spent an anxious twenty minutes or so talking to a policeman and giving a description of his small cousin. The relief was indescribable when he turned around and saw Geoff’s red hair.

“Oh, Geoff, thank God,” he grabbed hold of Geoff and hugged him. “Where have you been? I’m very angry with you!” he added, belatedly.

Geoff was indignant, “You weren’t here!” he said, trying to free himself.

“No, I’m sorry, I was stuck on the Underground… Dan, what are you doing here?”

“Tell you over something to drink… It’s too cold to stand here. Can’t we find a café or something?”

“I’m hungry,” Geoff added, plaintively.

“Of course… Geoff, I am sorry… What happened to Taylor?”

“His train came and I thought I saw you, but it wasn’t you and I thought you forgot I was here.” Geoff said, as Rix took firm hold of his hand and they headed outside to find a café.

Over coffee, Daniel recounted what had happened as Geoff ate hungrily and occasionally interjected the odd word.

“Thank God you were there,” Rix said, gratefully.

“They phoned the police… Geoff might have to give a statement,” Daniel said carefully. “Hopefully it was innocent, but if he’s known to them…”

“Jesus.” Rix stubbed out his cigarette, angrily.

“Anyway, as I said, hopefully it might not be anything. How are you, anyway? It’s been a while.” Daniel said, after asking for the bill.

It was late when they left the café, Geoff was nearly asleep and in fact did fall asleep in the taxi and only roused when they were in the flat.

“You’re late,” Mary-Lou said, as they came in, kissing the sleepy little boy hello. “Come on Geoff, you can go straight to bed. Where have you been?”

“I sat in a room with green wallpaper in the House of Lords,” Geoff mumbled. “Can I go to bed please, Mary-Lou?”

“I’ll tell you later,” Rix said, in response to Mary-Lou’s bemusement. “I met up with Dan, I invited him round tomorrow if that’s all right.”

“That’s fine – You know Con’s coming round, don’t you? Come on Geoff, sweetheart, you’re sleeping in the study, see? This will be your room until we move into the new house and then you’ll have a proper one. Go and wash and brush your teeth quickly and I’ll be there to tuck you in.” She barely waited for him to leave before she demanded to know what had happened.

Rix told her everything.

“At least he’s all right,” she replied, when he had finished. “What an idiot that Dr Taylor is! I hope you’re going to tell Jack.”

“Of course… but then it was partly my fault for being late and Geoff knows he should’ve stayed put. I dread to think of what might’ve happened. We’re going to have a very serious discussion tomorrow about how dangerous London can be. Oh, I didn’t tell you, did I? Toby Forrest seems to think that Con and Frank have got together. He even took most of Friday off to see her.”

“Really?” Mary-Lou said, pleased, “Get him to come here for dinner tomorrow. I told you so, didn’t I?”

“Frank, you remember my cousin, Con Maynard, don’t you?” Rix couldn’t resist saying the next evening. Geoff took their coats, inwardly wondering why his sister was blushing. He was going to ask her, but at that point Mary-Lou called to him to come and help set the table.

It was nice meal, very informal and relaxed and Mary-Lou enjoyed it. Geoff was also thrilled to be allowed to stay up really quite late.

Daniel Lyndhurst was fairly quiet, Mary-Lou noticed, remembering the day she had met him at the Savoy. Sometimes it was difficult to believe that had happened less than eighteen months ago, and she was now married and a mother of three. She glanced at her wedding rings then looked up to catch Daniel’s eye, he looked away quickly. She didn’t think he looked very happy, but whatever expression that made her think so disappeared as he started to listen to Geoff’s excited chatter with a smile.

Later he met and admired the triplets, who disturbed the quiet dinner with their yells.

“Teething,” Rix said, rubbing gel onto Alex’s gums. “I expect we’re in for a few broken nights.”

“They cry all the time,” Geoff added, peering over the side of the cradle with a marked lack of interest.

“I think it’s a special talent babies have.” Daniel grinned, “And I hear these three are going to have a cousin before the end of the year.”

“Really? Is Maeve going to have a baby?” Rix was surprised.

“Oh – I thought she would have told you, I didn’t mean to spill the beans. Aunt Annabelle told me last time I was in Devonshire, think it must’ve been about two or three weeks ago.”

“My sister is ill,” Rix said, turning sombre at once. “I expect that’s why she kept it quiet. I’ll speak to her tomorrow. But – that’s some good news. Mother will be thrilled. Excuse me, I’ll just go and get their bottles.”

”Peggy’s going to die,” Geoff said, solemnly to Daniel when Rix had left the room. “Papa told us that there’s something wrong with her brain and there isn’t anything the doctors can do. He said we shouldn’t talk about it unless Rix and Maeve and Auntie and Uncle do first.”

“I see… How awful.” Daniel was at a loss for words. “I didn’t know.”

“Rix is sad, I think,” Geoff continued, “Cos I know I would be if Phil died and she’s my twin.”

“Of course. It’s dreadful news… How long have you all known?

“Just two weeks I think. She didn’t say anything, Mamma said, ‘cos she didn’t want to make us all too sad.”

I think I might try and wind this up shortly unless anyone really strenuously objects... the whole trilogy is over 96,000 words Shocked and the whole concept of a plot has gone out of the window! What do you think? Please be honest, I can take it! Laughing

#361:  Author: Alison HLocation: Manchester PostPosted: Thu Nov 03, 2005 12:59 pm

Mia, we are all loving this! Well, I am, and I'm sure everyone else is. The plot seems fine to me - Peggy's illness, Con and Frank's romance, and Daniel needing a nice girlfriend! Oh, and Rix needing to decide about the job. If you do decide to wind it up now, though, then thanks for a really brilliant trilogy. I have enough trouble managing one drabble so I'm seriously impressed that you're managing four at once. Very Happy

#362:  Author: Sarah_KLocation: St Albans PostPosted: Thu Nov 03, 2005 2:10 pm

Obviously it's your decision Mia but we're all really enjoying it still. Of course you're writing so many drabbles at the moment I wouldn't be surprised if you wanted to tie up the loose ends and 96000 words is an awful lot! As Alison said, even if the bunnies have gone away from your original idea, there is a very good plot at the moment Very Happy

#363:  Author: RobinLocation: London PostPosted: Thu Nov 03, 2005 2:24 pm

Also still really enjoying this - for all the reasons Alison said.
But understand that the bunnies on it aren't quite so demanding as on the other ones at the moment, so finishing off before they disappear completely might well be good - at least we'll know what happens then! But not too quickly please! Very Happy

#364:  Author: Caroline - Guesting PostPosted: Thu Nov 03, 2005 3:01 pm

I'm still loving this, too, Mia.

But it's up to you, of course and if you feel it has run it's course, then I guess it's better to stop rather than force things. Just please give everyone a happy-ish ending if you do decide to tie things up soon! And who knows, after you've had a break, a bunny might bite and bring you back to these nice folks.

By the way, am I right in thinking that Daniel might be more interested in a nice boyfriend than a girlfriend....

Is Maeve's husband his cousin or a friend (I can't remember)!? He seemed put out when they got married, IIRC. Or is it Rix he's pining for...?

Oh, and please tell us about Giles and Rayner's son! I reckon it's a misunderstanding - Giles was probably the passenger, but Rayner thinks he was the driver.... or something along those lines!

Caroline.

Noooo don't end it (unless you feel you have to because RL is evil) but I'm still really enjoyin it. You keep adding extra dimensions and it's just fantastic.

Just to say I am definitely still reading and will do so as long as you write!

About the last post - you've got Geoff so perfectly. Of course he'd be able to sympathise with Rix a little, I just didn't realise he was so perceptive.

#366:  Author: LesleyLocation: Allhallows, Kent PostPosted: Thu Nov 03, 2005 8:14 pm

96,000 words? A mere trifle! Wink Mia, continue this for as long as you are happy, if yopu feel that it is no longer fun to write that's the time to stop.

Thanks.

“Are you free at the weekend?” Rayner asked Con, who was holding his hand in the taxi. They had made their excuses and left early together, hoping to have a drink in a pub by her flat.

“I think so.” Now over her first hesitation and shyness, she was enjoying the time she spent with him and even allowing herself to dream about a future together. She rather thought he felt the same way.

“I wondered if you’d like to come to meet my aunt? She lives in Brighton. We could stay with her. I could drive us there?”

“I’d love to meet her. Thank you.” Con was thrilled he had asked her to meet his family. “Are you close?”

“Oh, yes. She’s my great-aunt really, my mother’s aunt. My parents were both only children and so was I, so Aunt Alice is my only relative. She’s in her eighties now. I go and see her as often as I can.”

“I’m looking forward to meeting her. Was – what was it like being the only one?”

“Well – I didn’t know anything else. My mother died when I was quite young, and I went to school when I was about six or seven. I used to stay with Aunt Alice for a month in the summer, that was before the war – I remember going there once during the war, I must’ve been twelve or so, and they wouldn’t let anyone on the beach. I don’t remember being lonely, or anything… I’ve never really thought about it.”

“I just can’t imagine it. Our house is so full, not only us, but Erica, Adrienne and Claire and the Richardsons, not to mention all the girls from school popping round. There are eleven of us, you know. You must know, you met us all at the christening.”

“I did. Eleven of you? I knew you were a large family. That’s amazing…”

“I don’t think I’d want eleven children. Two or three, I think.” Con blushed bright red, as she realised what she was saying, but he laughed and put his arm around her shoulders for the rest of the journey.

Her conversation had jarred his thoughts though, he hadn’t realised that her family were Catholics. He remembered the time he had met Jack Maynard and the acrimonious conversation that had occurred; Maynard had been polite enough at the christening, but it had been an awkward moment’s conversation. Rayner had never imagined that he might one day have to ask him for his daughter’s hand in marriage. It would have been a difficult situation already.

And with the publication of his article in five days’ time – an argument of the wrongs of the current legislation on abortion – would probably make it impossible one.

Con could barely wait for the weekend. On Friday morning, she packed carefully, even asking Mary-Lou to lend her a dress in case Francis took her somewhere expensive.
She wondered what his aunt was like and hoped she was nice. It was odd how she had never felt like this before, even the time she had thought she was in love.

Thinking of that awful time, she decided she would tell him about it this weekend, on the Sunday. They had planned to go for a walk by the sea and that would be the best time, when they were alone and she could be honest with him. Con just hoped that he would understand.

He collected her at six, he was still wearing his suit, but he had removed his tie, he looked happy to see her.

“It was my last day today,” he said, after he had kissed her. “They had a party for me, but you were a good excuse to leave early.”

“Oh, but your party –” She began, but he silenced her with more kisses.

Thank you.

I thought it was because Raynor was recommending that abortion be legalised.

Aunt Alice welcomed them warmly to her elegant home, noticing at once how transparently happy her great-nephew looked. She was glad of it. Her keen eyes had already noticed that he was no longer wearing his wedding band.

“Aunt Alice, this is Constance Maynard, Con, this is Alice Haldane,” he said, simply.

“Oh!” Con said, turning round to Francis accusingly, “You didn’t tell me she was Alice Haldane! I’m so pleased to meet you, Miss Haldane, I’ve read all your poetry and your essays… I’m sorry, you must think me dreadfully rude…”

“Not at all,” Alice smiled, and caught hold of Con’s hands, “Do come and sit next to me, my dear, and tell me all about yourself. Do call me Alice, by the way. Francis tells me you write also?”

They spent a pleasant hour discussing Con’s plot for her novel and discussing Alice’s career, not only as one of the first Suffragettes but also as the celebrated poet she had later become.

“She’s wonderful,” Con said, as Francis showed her to a dainty guest bedroom with pink silk wallpaper and a view of the sea. “It’s a dream come true to meet her, I’ve always wanted to since we read her poetry at school. And as for the things she’s done! Thank you so much for asking me to meet her.”

“I’m just glad you wanted to come,” he said, putting her case down. “I’ll leave you to settle in, my room is opposite this one, and Aunt Alice is on the floor below.”

“She’s charming, my dear,” Alice said as he returned to the sitting-room, “I’m so pleased.”

She had always been the one he confided in; she had given him advice throughout his life. He sat down and told her everything, all his worries about her father, the article and the difference in their ages.

“I don’t think it will matter, I think she knows her own mind,” Alice reassured him. “As for this article, would you ever re-write it? Anyway, you don’t know if her father is particularly religious…”

“No, he is. I asked her cousin and he said that he was. I’d stand by it, I couldn’t change it, it’s too important.”

“Good, it’s valuable work, I’m glad you’re prepared to speak up about it."

“I don’t expect it will do much good, but – well, if I’m not working for the NHS any more I’ll have more freedom to write.” Rayner interrupted her.

“Have you told Constance about Elizabeth and Michael?” she asked gently.

“I’ve told her about Michael,” he replied, slowly, “I told her Elizabeth was dead, but that’s all. I’m going to tell her everything tomorrow – and then, I'm going to ask her if she’ll marry me.”

Fingers crossed that none of it will matter to Con...and that her family can support her whatever she decides. This is *such* a lovely drabble, Mia. I'm really enjoying it.

Glad Con got on well with Aunt Alice. Slightly worried about Raynor's wife, Elizabeth - I think she may have killed herself. Crying or Very sad

Thanks Mia.

Hope that Con will understand whatever he has to tell her. I'm sure she will. Looking forward to the wedding (apologies for jumping ahead!). & I love the fact that his auntie was a suffragette.

Getting excited about the proposal Very Happy

But wibbling a little a Jack's reaction when Con says yes (always optimistic!)

Thanks, Mia. I'm glad Alice and Con got on well with each other. I'm really happy that Frank is going to ask Con to marry him - I hope that Jack will give his approval.

I'm more worried about Jo trying to put a spoke in the wheel. I agree that Jack might be worried aboiut Rayner's views, but Con is an adult and capable of making her own decisions.
