This is Jonty's drabble.

‘It’s here! Come on, oh do come on!’ Lila and Flossie, my ten-year-old cousins, are beside themselves with excitement, dressed in their pink bridesmaid’s outfits. I’m scarcely less excited myself, though I like to think I am preserving a dignified front as I follow them into the vintage carriage, sparkling in the spring sunshine. It’s a wedding day I never thought would happen. At thirty-seven, I thought I was on the shelf for good. Not that I minded terribly. After all, when I finally got back to Boston I found I had no real need to work, for Poppa had left me well provided-for. Before long, though, I took on a few private pupils, languages mostly. There are plenty of wealthy folks hereabouts who are impressed with the prestige of a European education, and I’ve never lacked for pupils or companionship. Still, when Kurt and his family arrived to give a concert, I guess I was happy to be swept off my feet. Not that it happened all at once. They arrived in the fall, spending a few weeks with the family of two of my French pupils, Carrie and Alexandra. I arrived for their conversation tutorial to hear a rehearsal in progress. And strangely enough, though it’s been years, I was taken back to my early schooldays in the Tyrol. Those voices lifted in the old Austrian songs that I thought I’d forgotten, that unmistakeable Germanic accent, and those old-fashioned courtesies. I nearly found myself uttering the old ‘Gruss Gott’ when Kurt and the others were introduced. Things happened slowly at first, but then when it came time for the family to move on I realised I couldn’t live without Karl. For the first time in my life I was at a loss. Guess we owe a lot to Karl’s redoubtable old mother. She reminds me strangely of Joey Bettany, now Maynard: not to look at, but in her ability to understand other people, to get under their skins, and then to butt in. It was she who saw how things were, before Kurt or I had even realised ourselves. She took me aside the day before they were due to leave, and asked right out what my plans were. As I blustered about pupils and soirees she cut through my ramblings, and suggested I go home with them, to Vermont. I couldn’t help but realise this was more of a command than an invitation, and I knew I wouldn’t refuse. And that’s when it all happened. Seemed I wasn’t the only one to get a good talking-to from Kurt’s mother and now, six months later here we are. At the church gates. Any moment now I’ll be walking up the aisle as Mary Shaw, and then walking back down Mary von Trapp, ready for my new life as a member of the renowned von Trapp family.
