Daphne lay on the sand, looking up at the tropical stars, remembering.

“I, Daphne Josephine take you, Richard John to be my husband.” Today had been their wedding day, and it had been just perfect. A tropical island with a sandy beach and palm trees to shade them from the heat of the sun. She had worn a simple white dress, with flowers in her hair to match the posy she carried, and Richard had been comfortable in a casual suit. The ceremony had taken place in the middle of the morning, and had been followed by a celebratory lunch with their two attendants Matt and Chris, and a surprise appearance from Erik. Now Matt and Chris had departed on the evening flight, taking Erik with them, leaving Daphne and Richard to enjoy another week in this tropical paradise. Apart from the pictures already sent by mobile phone to Granny Jo at home in Switzerland, Chris had promised to produce an album with a selection of the pictures taken, while Matt had offered to post them on the web so that all their friends and relations could see them too. It would be good to have something to look back at when they were as old as Granny Jo – Daphne never wanted to forget how beautiful everything had been today.

Daphne lay on the sand, looking up at the tropical stars, remembering.

“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday dear Granny Jo, happy birthday to you.” It was Granny Jo’s eightieth birthday party, and Daphne stood in a corner of the school Hall trying to count how many people there were here – she thought it could be about five or six hundred – certainly Hall seemed as full as it had been on a Saturday evening at school. Actually, Granny Jo’s birthday had occurred last month, but it had been easiest to have the party at school, so they had had to wait till after the end of term, then the dormitories were free for everybody who wanted to stay. That had been better for Daphne herself, since she had just finished her first term at Oxford, and she had been working very hard, so she couldn’t possibly have got away if the party had been during term. “Are you one of my cousins?”, she turned to see who had spoken, “I’m Richard Winterton”, he continued. Daphne smiled – she could place him now – he must be one of Cousin Peggy’s grandsons. She had discovered that he was at Oxford too, although this was his final year, and they had agreed to meet up again next term. Daphne was pleased about that because, so far, Oxford had been a very lonely place.

Daphne lay on the sand, looking up at the tropical stars, remembering.

Daphne’s computer had beeped – she had a new e-mail. Richard wanted to meet her on Monday evening. She thought for a moment, and decided that if she worked extra hard this weekend she could have Monday evening off. “You look washed out, and it’s only first week”, he said, “I’m taking you for something to eat and then we’re going to meet some other people.” Daphne had protested, she didn’t want to be in the way with his friends, and anyway she had work to do. But Richard hadn’t listened, and she was glad now. They had eaten pasta in George Street, before going on to Jesus College, where his friends turned out to be a dozen or so people playing silly games. It had reminded her of Saturday evenings at school, and she hadn’t been left out of anything. That had been where she first met Chris and Matt – Chris was at Somerville like herself, although she was reading History like Richard, while Matt was another Engineering student. When she commented that she thought it was the first time she had really enjoyed anything at Oxford, she had been urged to come again. She hadn’t been sure – after all she still had all that work to do for her tutorials, but Matt had given her some helpful tips, and told her to ask him if she got stuck on anything in particular. Chris had offered to call round and make sure she didn’t get lost finding the bus-stop next week – they were going to have a session on the climbing wall at Headington which sounded fun.

Daphne smiled. The week after had turned out be another birthday party, but quite different from Granny Jo’s. Daphne really wasn’t sure she should go – “I’ve never even met Erik”, she said, “Will he want me at his party?” She had been told that it was for pancake day, and he always celebrated that way, and the more people the better fun it was. She remembered her surprise when Erik had turned out to be a twenty-five year old stuffed panda! However, she had come to love Erik as much as everybody else, and had really enjoyed her term looking after him, and hosting the lunchtime get-togethers which happened every Thursday. The work had seemed easier too, as she became used to a different way of working – it wasn’t like school where they told you things – she had had to find things out for herself. Daphne’s first year ended well – she had passed her exams, and they had finished with a camping/activity weekend in the Norfolk Broads, where they had met up with people from other universities.

Daphne lay on the sand, looking up at the tropical stars, remembering.

Daphne’s second year had been fine. She had still been working hard, but she had managed to make enough time to have some fun too – more silly games, meals, drinks, camping trips, outdoor activities – they were never bored. It had finished with another high point – Chris and Matt had got married. Richard had been Matt’s best man, and Daphne had been one of Chris’s bridesmaids. The wedding had taken place at Chris’s home – her younger sister and Matt’s cousins had been the other bridesmaids. The village church was like a picture postcard, and the ceremony had been simple and moving. The reception afterwards, in the village hall, had been a wonderful buffet organised by Chris’s mother with help from her friends in the WI, followed by a barn dance. Chris’s and Matt’s families were small enough to have everyone at the wedding, as well as some of their school and university friends, including Erik, who liked weddings, and parties in general. They could all fit comfortably into the village hall – no more than about seventy five people in total. Daphne had helped Chris with the invitations, and had joked that she couldn’t do that. She had counted up and decided that there were over three hundred and fifty family, and then there would be friends too. If she just had Richard’s and her sisters as bridesmaids there would be nine of them – if she had the cousins too it would make more than thirty! Perhaps she wouldn’t bother to get married at all.

Or prehaps she could do thinks very differently and avoid all the family! *g*

Thank you Lottie - this is great.

Daphne lay on the sand, looking up at the tropical stars, remembering.

Daphne and Richard had gone for a stroll round the village green in the moonlight after Chris and Matt had left for their honeymoon, and Richard had asked her to marry him. She had had no hesitation in accepting his proposal – marriage was a wonderful idea – she just wasn’t so sure about the wedding. Fortunately, Richard understood her feelings about the family – after all it was his family too! They wouldn’t be getting married for at least another two years – perhaps they could come up with a solution to the problem in that time. It had been Chris’s suggestion – she had seen a feature in a magazine and jokingly showed it to Daphne. Marriage on a tropical island – just the two of them. Could they really do it? They had decided that they both could and would. It was their day and they wanted to enjoy it. After all there was going to be another big family party for Granny Jo’s eighty fifth birthday a few months later – the family would have their day too! Everything had gone as they had expected, with the exception of Erik’s appearance, but they could cope with a little surprise like that.

I like the idea of a wedding on a tropical island and the proposal was lovely as well.

Daphne lay on the sand, looking up at the tropical stars, remembering.

“Are you going to lie there star-gazing all night?” Daphne sat up with a start – Richard had come back. He gave her a small package. She opened it to reveal a beautiful charm bracelet with a gentian, a panda, a tent and a palm tree attached. “We’ll get some more things for it over the years to come”, he said. Daphne smiled her thanks – she couldn’t speak for a minute – it was just perfect – her memories encapsulated in silver forever.
