One did not cry in public. No-one had ever taught the girl this, but she knew it was so. As she watched the coffin descending into the sodden earth her eyes were dry, her heart empty. They were both gone now, and she was alone.

Blindly the girl turned from the graveside. In her heart she made Antigone's promise, never to forget, never to swerve from the path they had chosen for her, never to change the smallest part of the person she knew that they had loved. That was all, now, that Eustacia could do for them.
