“Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments.

Jack had always hoped for this day. Even when Joey had been so far away in India. Even when he had feared that others might win her hand before him, in his heart of hearts, Jack Maynard had hoped that the day would come when Joey might be his, his love, his fiancée, his wife, his everything.

Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.

There was something quite extraordinary about the girl who he held in his arms. And she summoned up feelings within him, that he had never realised he could feel for anyone. Feelings that had grown, stronger and stronger, in the years that he had known her. And to see her cry like this was beyond heart-rending. While his medical training told him that this was the best thing for her, to let her grieve, it pained him to know that what she had had to endure. And he vowed within his heart to protect her from such hardships from that point onwards to the best of his ability.

O, no! It is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;

Joey sobbed for a little while yet. For she felt her world was collapsing all around her, and yet, Jack was here. Holding her. Letting her cry. Just being here.
As her tears subsided, Joey felt Jack’s arm tighten around her, and she knew that neither wanted to break free.
To sit here, and to simply be held, and to know, without even a word, that he loved her, was perhaps the most immense sensation that she, Josephine, had ever experienced.
And lifting her head to look at him, she smiled, almost shyly.

It is the star to every wand'ring bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his ending sickle's compass come;

Jack beheld her for a second or two.
And then, lifting her hand to his lips, he kissed it gently, and pulled her back close towards him.
“Joey, my darling?”
Jack wrapped his fingers around her slim hands, and suddenly felt afraid.
Joey turned to look at him, her eyes, the eyes he saw such beauty within, soft and questioning.
Jack looked at her, and a broad smile spread across his face.
“I love you.”
And he dropped, down on one knee.
“ I love you Josephine.” He murmured, and took her left hand into his own.
Joey blushed gently, and cupped his chin with her free hand.
“I love you too Jack,” she replied.

Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

“Marry me?”

If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.”

For we know now, as they did not then, that they would indeed live happily ever after.
That peace would once again reign.
And that, above all else, love endureth.
