Okay, I cave Smile

----------

My Darling Connie, I know I hurt you terrible and there is no possible way to justify that, or apologise enough, but perhaps if I explain you might be able to understand.

You know I’m no good at letter writing, but I’ll do my best. I wanted to tell you this in person, however it appears you left me no choice but to take this route, useless as it might be.

I never went looking to hurt you. It just sort of happened. You must have realised things had been rocky with us for a while. I had hoped that things would get better after the summer, and for a time they didm but they you started acting all strange, worse than usual, and I didn’t know what to think. Actually, I thought for a brief while that you were having an affair. You were always so preoccupied with something.

Like I said, I never set out to hurt you, even when I thought you were seeing someone else. It was all a total accident. I met her while I was out with the guys. I was already feeling low, and it was just really nice to have someone pay attention just to me for once, like it was with us in the beginning. And even then you always had other people to think about. It was never supposed to carry on, but it did. She wanted me to break up with you, but I just couldn’t do it, and I now realise it was because you mean to much to me.

You’re kind. You’re beautiful. You’re fun to be with. You’re the most wonderful person I have met, or will ever meet, and it just took me too long to realise that. My life will be a black hole without you in it, Connie. I know I badly wronged you, but I hope that you can find it in your heart to forgive me and take me back. I’ll change. I know I can, and I will do, just for you. I don’t want to lose you, Connie, and it’s only now I truly understand how much I love you and need you.

I love you, Connie Maynard. If you believe nothing else, please believe that.

Ever yours,
David.

Don't you dare take him back Connie, once a cheater always a cheater, or words to that effect. Methinks David needs to grow up rather a lot, before he makes anyone a good boyfriend, that letter was entirely focused on me, me, me, me...

I've just caught up on the latest drama and fully agree *don't trust David*. A bit quick to judge others by his own standards ie Connie is distracted, therefore she's doing the sort of thing that leaves me distracted and having an affair with someone else so it's a licence for me to have a fling. I've also got funny looks from colleagues, as I laughed at others' comments. Ellen

Er... as in, "Pie faced, splay footed gumph"? (That's Evvy's impression of Cornelia when they first meet in Head Girl.)

#17:  Author: CazxLocation: Swansea/Bristol PostPosted: Sun Nov 28, 2004 10:48 am

Maybe I'd better explain about the pie thing... Back in the day when I started college I met a girl who always said pie. She became one of my closest friends and "pie" became the word of our group so to speak. Pie can be affectionate when you use it in texts or emails as "Hey Pie" or when someone is upset you say "Oh you poor little pie". But pie can be bad when you are describing bad things that have happened, evil is usually added before pie to show that it is now bad. So if we are talking about some evil ex boyfriend who broke one of our hearts we say "He's such a evil heffer Pie". Hope that explains what I meant!

#18:  Author: LadyGuinevereLocation: Leicester PostPosted: Sun Nov 28, 2004 12:37 pm

Aha! Now I understand Smile But it did keep me giggling for several days! Laughing Among one of my online groups, pie is a common theme as well, but it generally goes along the lines of 'Fancy some pie?' and then a long discussion about types of pie. Though they still can't understand minced beef and onion pie, and I still have no idea what butternutsquash actually is. It's a long running joke kind of thing. While our internet is back working again, my computer is not. Stupid computer hammer Which means, though I can get online a bit more, I can't post any more drabble as that's on my computer. Evil electronics. ~LadyG

Have just read all of this over the last couple of days and am really enjoying it. Can only repeat the advice for Connie to have nothing more to do with David - I hope he suffers (lots) for what he's done to her! Liz

#21:  Author: LadyGuinevereLocation: Leicester PostPosted: Mon Nov 29, 2004 6:41 pm

I'm back now!! Turned out it was a dodgy connection wire. So, to celebrate, here's more!

-----

As she got to the end of the letter, Connie had to bite her lip to prevent a cynical laugh escaping. He, who presumed to place a fair amount of the blame at her feet, then proceeded to tell her he would change and beg her to take him back!

Since the incident, Connie had often considered that course of action, but this letter only strengthened her resolve not to do so. She could no longer trust David and what was a relationship without that? If he had done such a thing once, what was to stop him doing it again? He said he would change for her, but there had been too many broken promises already.

No, she would not take him back. Forgiveness would come in time, but nothing more. David Storn did not deserve anything more than that.

Suddenly, Con realised that neither did he deserve the compliment she was paying him by letting herself go. Connie picked up her make-up brush and expertly dabbed her cheeks with a little rouge. There, that was much better! Perhaps she should eat something as well. Belatedly, Connie realised she was actually quite hungry she had eaten very little over the past couple of days. There was no need to let her health go because of a silly man! I

nside, Con was still hurting. Nothing would heal the insult just yet, but the slight improvement in her appearance heightened her confidence no end. She even enjoyed the shocked look on Julia’s face as she waltzed in and suggested they go for lunch.

There were more important things than David in her life now.

Butternut Squash is a vegetable, similar in size to an aubergine but is kind of a pale orangey-brown colour. Other types of squash include Summer Squash which is very tasty, generally a yellowy colour, about the size of a satsuma and similar in consistency to a (sweet) pepper.
check out http://www.foodsubs.com/Squash.html for pictures. There's also http://www.foodsubs.com/Squashsum.html for summer squashes. I love that website. It's very useful for answering questions like "What is an aubergine anyways?" Very Happy

Oops! Nearly posted too much!

-----

As much as Connie would have liked to avoid her elder sister in the days following the dramatic break-up, it was incredibly hard to do so, since that exact period of time also coincided with the run-up to the triplets’ twentieth birthday. Margot was to travel down from Edinburgh early on the Friday and spend the weekend with her sisters. Then, on the Saturday, several others of their friends would also be paying the triplets a visit. As a result, Len was diligent in organising activities.

“Con, are you alright?” Len asked, a little concerned.

Con pulled herself away from her thoughts for a moment. “Yes, yes, I’m fine. Sorry.”

Len grinned at her. “Lost in a story again?”

“Something like that.” Connie knew she would have to tell her sister about David at some point, but she couldn’t bring herself to do so just yet. Not just because the wounds were still raw, but also because she would have to repeat it when Margot arrived and then again when the others did. Perhaps she could lump it all together.

Len raised her eyebrows, but pursued it no further and instead turned the chatter to mundane details regarding the visits. That was one good thing about Len, Connie mused, she never pried when she could see it wasn’t wanted, but she would be there for you if you did.

Thannks Lady G, glad your computer is functioning again, and I'm really pleased that Connie has decided that David is definitely not worth bothering with. PS Does Butternut squash actually taste like either butter or nuts? It doesn't actually look very appetising.

I hope Con's able to talk things over with the other two. Thanks, Lady G. Butternut squash does taste kind of buttery -- if mashed with lots of butter Very Happy . That's one of my favorite ways to eat it. It's also good with brown sugar & cinnamon, or whatever other spices you'd use if it were pumpkin and you were making pumpkin pie. *always adds extra cinnamon to pumpkin pie*

Very much enjoying this story, keep going, please. Butternut squash is very good sliced thinly, and baked, with thinly sliced potato in a baking dish, pour melted butter and at least 150g of goats cheese and cream over top. Bake until very soft. Obviously this gratin is not exactly healthy.

The weekend arrived far quicker than Connie ever expected , and it felt to her as though her head was days behind her body. However, when Margot stepped of the train amidst a variety of excited squeals, Connie pushed all thoughts of anything else to the back of her mind.

It was just going to be the three of them that evening, so the triplets could have a small celebration on their own. They settled on gathering in Len’s pretty little toom to exchange a few small gifts and jointly read the letter that their mother, Joey Maynard had written to them, especially in honour of their birthday.

“Con, this is fantastic!” Margot enthused over her gift of ‘Tropical Diseases and Local Cures’. “Just what I’ve been wanting! And your’s is great too, Len,” she added. “I’ve never even heard of this one before! I hope you both like your gifts as much.”

She was greeted by a loud chorus of agreement. “Of course!” exclaimed Len, mildly offended, closely followed by Connie’s call of, “Absolutely!”

“I am glad.” Margot smiled at the pair of them. “What did Reg get you, Len? Anything nice?”

“I haven’t received anything yet,” Len replied, a little disappointed. “I did so want to open if with the two of you here as well.”

Margot reached out an arm to sooth her sister. “There’s always tomorrow’s post,” she said gently. “You never know! How about you, Con? What did you receive from your beloved?”

There was a deathly silence.

Mortified, Margot eventually spoke. “Did I say something wrong?”

“Con? What’s the matter?” Len took up the questioning.

Con tried very hard not to look at either of her triplets and suddenly became very interested in her own hands. “We broke up.”

“Oh, Con!” Margot cried as she lept to her side. “What happened?”

“I don’t really want to talk about it.”

“Why didn’t you say anything before?” asked Len.

Connie shrugged. “I don’t know really. I guess I didn’t want to think about it too much.” Not an outright lie, but it was hardly the only reason.

Len continued her gentle queries. “How are you about it? Are you okay?”

“I’ll live,” replied Connie succintly. “Anyway,” she brightened considerably, “This is going to be a great weekend, and I don’t want anything to spoil it….. especially not David! Now, where’s that letter?”

After scrabbling around a little in a pile on the dresser, Len finally produced it. “Who’s going to read it?” she asked.

Margot flicked a hand in Len’s direction. “It doesn’t really make much difference. You may as well.”

“Dear girls,” Len began clearly. “I did so wish to be there with you for the first birthday of your second decade, but your father reminded me that it wasn’t really practical, especially as we make you three travel by train! Just remember that we are with you in spirit, and hope you have a wonderful day without us.

“To my eldest daughter, Len. Both the staff and pupils keep asking me how soon you will be returning to teach, especially since Mlle Lachenais is considering retiring soon. She may seem youthful to you and I, but she insists she wants to enjoy herself. I don’t suppose you’ve changed your mind about leaving it a few years, have you? The school would love to have you, and it would mean you and Reg would be able to stay on the Platz as well. He sends his love, by the way, and apologises for not having sent his gift to you earlier. He spent a very long time choosing the perfect present, though I’m sure he would rather I hadn’t mentioned that! He’s looking forward to seeing you again, as are we all.”
Len broke off from the reading. “Well, at least I know why nothing has arrived yet!” She sounded relieved, though she had never spoken aloud of her worry.

Without waiting for comments from her sisters, Len continued to read from the letter. “To my second daughter, Con. We were thrilled to hear about your latest series of articles being published in the university paper. I always knew being editor of the Chaletian would stand you in good stead. I hope you will be able to send us a copy when they’re published. Everyone here is very proud of your work, and hope to see your work in a national publication soon. And maybe even following my footsteps into the world of novels as well! And then I suppose you’ll find yourself a nice man and settle down, just as I did with your father. You all grow up so fast!”

Con’s head dropped visibly and the warmth she had felt over her mother’s words evapourated quickly. She could feel the colour rising to her face and knew that her sisters shared the awkwardness. Even a totally unrelated mention of men made Connie think of David and his betrayal. She certainly wouldn’t be settling down anytime soon.

After clearing her throat, Len carried on. “And to my youngest triplet, Margot. I am very pleased to hear that you are already offering your skills to helping local organisations, especially since your father tells me that now this is your second year, the work will be distinctly harder. It is always hard to follow such a Calling, but I am sure you already know that. I received a letter from your Auntie Rob yesterday and she asked me to pass on her offer of any advice, should you need it. She would love to write to you herself, but as she is a very busy person, as you can well imagine, it might not be for a while. We are all very proud of your dedication, and know you will bring light to many lives.”

Len stopped there for the moment, as Margot was joining Connie in emitting various shades of redness. But as she scanned the rest of the page, it seemed that to carry on might spare their blushes and the girls spent the rest of the evening giggling over the antics of their younger siblings.

Saturday’s post came and went, with still no sign of Len’s birthday gift from Reg. Margot and the rest of Len and Con’s visitors left early on Sunday afternoon. Though Len was sad to see them go, she was also secretly awaiting Monday morning and the hope that she would get some kind of response from her fiance.

Connie could see it in her sister’s eyes, though she wisely chose not to question her on it. Len very rarely spoke of her feelings for Reg, but Con knew that they were there and they ran very deep. Connie would never have taken that particular path herself, but the time she had spent with Len over the past six months had shown her how happy Reg made her. And up until now, Connie had thought that he felt the same.

By Tuesday, and with still no package, Len’s nerves were beginning to strain. Connie had arrived mid-morning to see her sister with slightly red eyes. Len had evidently been upset, though she hid it well.

Taking her gently by the arm, Connie led her towards the door. “You know what the post is like these days, Len,” she offered, though Con did not believe what she was saying herself. “It’s probably stuck in a warehouse somewhere waiting to be delivered. Everything will work out in the end.”

It seemed strange to Connie, to be in this position. This just wasn’t how things were in the Maynard family. Len had always been the strong one, not Margot, and certainly not Connie. But things were different now. Len made have settled better than she did at first, but it was a very different world to the one at school, and here it seemed Con had managed to find her way better, though it didn’t feel like that after David. Nevertheless, Connie was positive that Len would find her feet eventually. She was just unused to things like this happening to her.

It was bad enough that Connie was in this situation. That her beloved sister may be as well, only made things worse. There was so much in the real world that neither of them had seen at school.

Len sniffed and ran her hand across her eyes. “I suppose,” she conceeded eventually.

“Come on,” said Con gently. “Let’s go grab a coffee. I know you don’t have any classes until this afternoon, and mine isn’t until 12. We’ve got plenty of time.”

But they never made it as far as the café.

You're all too good at this! ) Consider this a Christmas present, as there'll probably be no more until January now! (No cliffs this time though)

-----

In fact, the two girls never made it out of Len’s Halls of Residence, for as they were about to descend a tall figure made his own way up the stairs.

Len stared incredulously at him in silence for a few seconds, as the broad smile spread across his face, before exclaiming, “Reg! Where did you come from?” Her eyes suddenly lit up like Christmas lights and even Con felt a dead weight lift from her heart.

“I couldn’t trust something like this to the postal service!” He held out a small box, beautifully wrapped and with a gold ribbon around it.

Looking from Reg to the box and back again, Len asked, “But how? You never said anything about coming to Oxford!”

Reg was evidently enjoying her astonishment. He shrugged and said simply, “Well, it wouldn’t be a surprise then, would it?”

“I suppose not.” Len giggled. “Did Mamma know?”

He nodded. “Of course. Really, I’m here for a conference, but your father allowed me to leave a day early so that I could stop off here and see you. I have missed you, you know!”

Len threw her arms around his neck and planted a kiss on his cheek. “I’ve missed you too! Oh, I’m so glad you’re here!”

There were a few rather uncharitable feelings on Con’s part with regards to Reg, however. She eyed him carefully and considered. He seemed genuinely unaware of the hurt he had unintentionally caused Len. And Len, of course, said nothing of that fact. Connie let out a small sigh. If only he had thought to come earlier, or at least send a card, some of Len’s pain could have been avoided. She was happy now, but not ten minutes ago she had been upset.

At this point, Connie thought it might be appropriate to make a quick exit. The happy couple needed some time on their own. Con was itching to know whatReg had bought her sister, but managed to get the better of her curiosity and disappeared quickly down the stairs before Len even noticed she was gone. There would be plenty of time to talk later.

I realised that I sent myself a backup of this (in case the house burns down while I'm away - you can never be too careful! Smile), so here's another part. If you can give me the name of the band and song that I borrowed, there's a prize. If you can tell me the name of the national radio station I listen to, there's another Smile

-----

Connie breezed out of the lecture theatre, her mind still abuzz with the concepts that had been presented. Oblivious to everything around her, she skipped happily down the stone steps, still contemplating how to use the ideas in her next paper. But before she reached the bottom, a voice called out to her.

“Connie! Wait!”
It was David. Cruelly pulled from her thoughts, Con slowed to a more serene pace and kept her head high. “What do you want?” Amongst the hustle and bustle, their little exchange was left unnoticed by anyone else.

“Please, Connie. I just want to talk to you.”

Connie ignored his words and just kept on walking. David was forced to duck in and out of the crowds to stay with her.

“At least tell me if you read my letter?” he pleaded, once he was finally able to stay with her.

There was a distinct pause before Connie answered. “I did,” she replied coldly after she had finally decided it wouldn’t make much difference if she answered him or not.

“And?” David sounded extremely hopeful.

However, it turned out that his optimism was rather ill-placed. “And nothing!” For the first time since she had left him, Connie let the full force of her anger flow out into her words. “Did you think I would take you back after that pile of rubbish? What kind of naïve person do you think I am? Why should I, I who was nothing by dedicated to you, take you back when yo couldn’t even stay faithful to me! Give me one good reason why I should!” It was a challenge, not a question. As Connie’s voice had graudually risen, more and more people began to take notice of the pair.

“Because I love you? And you love me?” offered David tentatively.

“Pfftt!” Con made a derogatory noise and began to up her speed. “If you really loved me, you wouldn’t have cheated.”

“I was lonely Connie!” he protested. “I’m not a perfect person. I never meant to do those things to you, but I did and now I realise what you meant to me! You were all distant, and I felt lost. Things would be different now!”

Connie stopped dead and whirled angrily around to face him. “Do you want to know why I was so distant for those weeks? Do you? I thought I was pregnant…. with your child, in case you were wondering. So while I was worrying about what change it would bring upon my life – our lives! – you were off having fun with someone else. How is that fair?

David’s face went white as a sheet. “You’re not… are you?”

“No, but I didn’t know that at the time. I was coming to tell you when I found you with that cheap floozy of yours.”

“I…. I didn’t know,” he mumbled in response.

“Evidently not,” she hissed coldly “Now, If you don’t mind, I have things do do.” She left him standing there, without even bothering to look back at him. That part of her life was well and truly over now, and a good thing too, but Connie could not stop the tears from rolling down her cheeks, as much tears of anger as sadness. She sniffed awkwardly and brushed them away, but the feelings were still there. And it didn’t seem like they would dissipate quickly. -

----

And that's the end of him! Now, who's next? ~LadyG

I think Con might have put the strict definiton of a 'good chalet girl' behind her by now, and might just be quite capable of doing things like that! I'm glad to hear that my suspicions were wrong. Since I haven't lived inEngland for ten years I have no idea of the national radio stations, and certainly not of their repertoire. It was just curiosoty that made me ask.

------

The melancholy that had descended upon Connie following her final meeting with David was still there after a fortnight. It was not that she missed him and wanted him back, though on occasion she did just that, but more that Connie still could not comprehend just why David had done such a thing. The longer Connie dwelled upon the problem, the more she believed she simply wasn’t good enough to keep him. That fact did not absolve him of any of the blame, but it hardly made her feel better either.

Connie, Steph and Laurie were lounging quite peacefully in Laurie’s sitting room as usual, when Julia stormed in and flopped down into the armchair. There she sat silently, arms crossed in anger and glaring at the old oak cabinet as if it had killed her entire family.

It was Laurie who finally plucked up the courage to enter into a conversation with Julia. “Did he not take it very well?”

“Well?” Julia spluttered unexpectedly. “He took it rather better than well!”

“Wha’s the problem, then,” Steph put in logically. “I thought yer wanted a nice easy break up. Yer said yer were sick of bein’ made ter feel guilty all the time!”

Julia’s expression did not change. “Well, that wasn’t what I got!”

“So what did happen then?” Laurie asked, echoing Connie’s own thoughts, though that young lady stayed mute.

“HE broke up with ME!”

The girls all stiffled giggles at Julia’s indignation.

“Does it really make any difference?” Laurie continued bravely. “After all, you’re not together now, whatever the circumstances.”

But Julia was not placated that easily. “It makes a difference to me! I should have been the one to end it, not him! Arg!” She threw a cushion at the wall, where it thankfully avoided hitting anything breakable. “It makes me feel totally rotten!”

“The’ do somet’ing to make yerself feel better,” suggested Steph. “Forget about ‘im and show ‘im yer don’t care.”

“Like what?”

Steph shrugged. “I dunno. Go out and enjoy yerself without ‘im, I suppose.”

A strange sound that could possibly be a loud whoop emanated from Julia’s direction in response. “That’s a fantastic idea, Steph? How about this weekend?”

The originator of the idea agreed readily, swiftly followed by Laurie, but Connie held back. It would indeed be nice to go out and show David that he was no longer important to her, yet that was also the reason Connie did not wish to go. Since she had left David, Connie had not really taken the time to enjoy herself, especially since she had met him on the steps outside the lecture hall. He had permeated every part of her life, and now he was gone, it felt empty. “

So, how about it Connie?” queried Julia. “You’ll come won’t you?”

Con began to flounder immediately. “Oh, I don’t know… I mean…. I’m not sure. I’ll think about it.”

“Come on, Connie!” Steph joined in. “It’ll help get tha’ slimeball out of your head once and fer all. “Yer’ve spent too much time on ‘im already! It’d do yer good, just like it will Julia.”

Eventually, Connie allowed herself to be persuaded, though she was far from convinced by theentire exercise. What did she really have to gain from it? David was gone from her life, whether she went out or not. But then, what would be the reason not to go out? She deserved her fun, just as anyone else did. Connies mind continued to go round in circular arguments, and even by the time the weekend arrived, she still had not made a clear cut decision, though she had promised to be in attendance.

I can't believe you're all so sympathetic to Julia! Smile she's only a mood because she didn't get there first!

-----
When the girls arrived at the Student Union bar, Connie already felt tipsy, and not just because of the wine she had drunk before they left. The place was loud and busy, with different coloured lights at strategic points around the bar. Added to that there was loud music from a band in one cormer, and a small selection of people dancing.

She had been here before, of course, but Connie had never quite looked at it in this way before. Previously she had appeared on David’s arm, and stayed with him for the whole night. Now, it seemed, Connie was single, and there were several glances in the direction of her group of friends.

Within minutes, Julia had been asked to dance by one of the students who had been previously lounging by the pool table. After one drink, Steph and Laurie followed her onto the dancefloor. Though they did pause and ask her to join them, Connie declined, shaking her head. “No thanks,” she said, straining her voice to be heard over the music. “Maybe later?”

As she drained the last of her wine, Connie glanced around the bar. Julia seemed to be enjoying herself, as did the other two. Despite her refusal, Connie did want to dance. The only problem was that she wanted a man to ask her first. There were plenty of eligible men in the room why weren’t they asking her?

Connie flicked back her hair and sat up properly. No man was going to ask her to dance if she didn’t look like she wanted to! Her blank gaze turned to one of interest, as she scanned the room for movement in her direction.

The trick evidently worked, for within a few minutes, a tall, sandy-haired young man sidled up behind her. “May I buy you a drink?”

“Why not?” Connie shrugged and he returned to the table carrying another glass of wine for Connie and a pint for himself.

He sat down close to her at the table, more perhaps than was polite, but no nearer than necessity demanded with all the noise surrounding them. “So, what’s your name?”

“Connie,” the owner of that name said shyly.

The young man immediately held out his hand and took hers in a firm grip. “I’m Sean. Nice to meet you, Connie.” There was a faint lilt of Irishness in his voice.

“And the same to you.”

“What do you study?” he asked her.

“English,” Connie replied confidently. “I’m in my second year at St. Anne’s,” she added, feeling that she should really make some attempt at responding properly. “What about you.

He made a face at her. “Law at Wadham. Third year. I hate it, but Pa wants me to follow in his footsteps, so I didn’t get much choice.”

“It’ll give you a good profession when you’re done though. Very profitable.” As she said those words, Julia managed to catch Connie’s eye, which made her laugh.

Sean spread his arms in a gesture of mock hurt. “What did I say?”

Internally, Connie berated herself for being so silly. Here was a good-looking friendly guy sitting next to her, and it was all she could do to stop giggling like a Middle! “No, no, it was nothing you said…. or did…” she added as an afterthought. “It’s just my friend over there,” Connie pointed at the dancefloor. “She made me laugh, that’s all.”

“Did she now?” he grinned like a schoolboy at Connie. “Would you like to join her on the dancefloor?”

Abruptly, Connie turned shy. “Oh, I’m not sure that would be wise.” Indeed it might not, for she could already feel the alcohol makiing it’s way through her veins and she wasn’t used to the effects.

“Come now, dear Connie, you wouldn’t deny me the chance to dance with a pretty girl would you? Especially after I’ve already bought her a drink!”

For a brief moment, Connie thoughts considered what David would think. Certainly, he would be horrified, and that decided her. She accepted his proffered hand and followed him briskly to the dancefloor.

I've just read this al the way through from the beginning (it's considerably more interesting than the German essay I'm meant to be writing! Embarassed Rolling Eyes ) and it's great seeing Con from this angle, especially as she's always been one of my favourite characters.

-----

It seemed to Connie that time flew while she was out there enjoying herself. Sean was an entertaining host and attentive as well. He had bought her a couple more drinks and danced with her near continuously.

Connie couldn’t remember the last time she had had so much fun. Even when she had gone out with David, it had never been like this. Tonight she felt… free.

At about midnight, Julia approached her. “Connie, we’re hoping to go home soon, Steph, Laurie and I,” she said with a terrible disregard for grammar that would have shocked her teachers. “Will you be ready?”

“I’m not going home yet.” Con’s words even stunned herself, though she had no desire to take them back once she had said them.

“What do you mean you’re not coming?” asked Julia incredulously. “You can hardly go home on your own – it’s not safe!”

“Who said anything about going home alone. I’m sure Sean will take me if I ask him to.”

Julia noted the slur to Connie’s words, though certainly her friend’s eyes were bright with defiance. “Don’t be silly, Connie. Come on. If we go now we won’t have to wait long for a taxi.” She laid a hand on Connie’s arm, which she found thrown away almost instantly.

“I already said, I’m not going home yet. You’re being just like my mother! Or worse, Len!”

Knowing the strict rule under which Con had grown up, those words stung Julia even though she realised that it was partly the wine talking. But Julia could be a volatile person on occasion, and she was not going to just ignore the jibe. “Fine,” she replied angrily. “Have it your own way then. Don’t let me stop you enjoying yourself.”

Connie glared at her as she watched Julia stalk across the room to a heated discussion with Steph and Laurie. With a final sideways glance at Connie, Julia and the others left the bar, leaving Connie on her own.

But Connie didn’t care. She wasn’t alone anyway Sean was there too.

“Glad that’s sorted.” He smiled enticingly. “Now, how about another drink?” Connie readily agreed.

-----

When Connie awoke the next morning in a strange room, with a stale taste in her dry mouth, she knew exactly what she had done. And what it meant.

From the time of her argument with Julia, Connie’s memory was rather hazy, but it was still there. There had definitely been more alcohol, and more dancing as well. And then…. then she had agreed to go home with him.

It made Con feel rather ill, both physically and mentally. She quickly hurried into her clothes and managed to find a bathroom, thankfully meeting no one along the way. There, for lack of a glass, she turned on the tap full blast annd slurrped graciously at the water. It felt cool and fresh in a way she rarely appreciated! But it still did not get rid of the horrible taste in her mouth.

Having quelled the sick feeling in her stomach for the time being, though not in her head, Connie returned to the place where she had woken up. There was no sign of anyone else in the bedroom, or the bathroom.

On the little table next to the bed, was a small folded piece of paper with her name carefully printed in wobbly letters on the front. Connie approached it with trepidation she really wasn’t sure she wanted to read this.

But as seemed too common these days, temptation got the better of her.

“Last night was fun. See you around.”

Connie blinked at it in shock a couple of times before screwing it into a little ball and throwing it into an already overflowing wastepaper basket. That was it? Seven little words? The last vestiges of hope Connie had held that perhaps it was more than just a one-night stand were blown away in that instant. There was no escaping what it was now, and that made Connie feel awful.

It was obvious that the whole thing had been a mistake, but how much effect would it have on her now? That was two men in recent weeks that had rejected her. What was wrong with her? And what man would want her now, after she had cheapened herself in such a way?

Connie grabbed her things and exited the place at a run. Upon leaving the grounds, she went somewhere she hadn’t been in weeks, perhaps even months: the little Catholic church that she had frequented in the first few months of university, and that Len still regularly attended.

-----

Yes, Connie was very, very stupid

Nope, she wasn't listening to me either, the silly girl. -

----

Confession may have marginally eased Connie’s conscience, but it could not remove her stupid behaviour, nor the argument with Julia. It was now well after midday on Saturday afternoon, and still no sign of Julia. That was unusual, even for someone as scatty as Julia. Connie’s roommate Megan was out as well, so there was not even anyone to talk to.

It was all David’s fault, Connie decided. If he hadn’t been such a…. Connie could not think of a work derogatory enough… she would never have done what she did, and then she wouldn’t be feeling like this. Had he not rejected her, she would not have been rejected a second time. Yes, definitely all his fault.

Connie sat down on the sofa and held her head in her hands. Things were certainly not going well and blaming it on David didn’t help much. The headache had gone, but the rotton feeling within persisted. Con knew she should have left with Julia when she had the opportunity. Instead, she’d got angry at her friend for looking out for her and sent her away.

There was only one thing to do really, and that was to make the first move and apologise to Julia. And Steph and Laurie as well, for their part.

I wanted to do this yesterday, but got taken out instead.

-----

Outside Julia’s door, Connie paused. As much as she hoped Julia had forgotton about last night’s events, it seemed a bit unlikely. Very unlikely in fact.

She took a very deep breath and reached up her hand to knock on the door, before quickly returning it to her side. What could she even say to Julia? “Sorry, I was drunk,” just wasn’t good enough. But it was the truth.

Finally, Connie plucked up her courage and rapped on the door before she could change her mind. There was a small crash from the other side where Julia had evidently tripped over something on her way to answer the knock, and a few moments later, a slightly flustered Julia appeared.

“Oh, it’s you,” she said with an air of bitterness. “I suppose you’ve come to show off?”

All of Connie’s nerves evaporated in that instant and she retorted bluntly, “Don’t be ridiculous, Julia. I’ve come to apologise, not anything else.”

“Hmm,” was Julia’s only reply, though she moved graciously to one side and gestured Connie to come inside.

Connie took a quick glance around as she entered, and picked her way around the spot where Julia’s pile of books had fallen onto a couple of plates. Connie took the opposite seat to Julia. “I just want to apologise for the things I said and did last night. You were only looking out for me and I should have listened to you.”

Despite her seeming animosity, Julia shrugged it off fairly easily. “Don’t worry about it, Connie. You were drunk. Alcohol makes us say stupid things.

And do them, Connie thought to herself. “I know, but I still shouldn’t have said those things to you. I may have had too much to drink, but it’s not an excuse. Especially for saying that you,” she winced slightly as she said it, “were acting like my mother and Len. That was far more than just unkind and we both know it.”

“Seriously, Connie, forget it. I’d been drinking too, or I would never have reacted how I did anyway.”

Looking Julia in the eye for the first time, Connie saw how right she was. The darkness around her eyes was probably only equal to Connie’s own. The former Chalet girl smiled a little, but still did not seem happy.

“What happened after we left, anyway?” Julia continued. “You did seem to be enjoying yourself, at least.”

At that innocuous question, Connie burst into tears.

Immediately, Julia moved to sit next to Connie, and placed an arm around her, drawing her close. “Hey, hey, don’t cry! Was it really that bad?”

Connie buried her head into Julia’s shoulder and sniffled madly. “Oh, Julia, I did something really stupid! No decent man will want me now!”

There was no need for Julia to ask exactly what Connie had done it was fairly obvious by now. It was also completely clear how bad Connie was feeling about the whole episode. Julia’s own upbringing had been rather more ‘liberal’ than Connie’s, and that young person had rarely been bothered by such things. But Connie… though she had managed to move on from many of the trappings of her sheltered schooldays, still found herself slipping back into it at times.

Julia had always known this, but had not considered where it would eventually lead and David had exacerbated the situation. Had he been in the room with the girls, Julia would have gladly kicked him somewhere extremely painful. Hard. Connie’s imagined failure with him had led her into something that she was not at all ready for. And that in turn had led her to this state. “Now who’s being ridiculous?” she said authoritatively.

Stunned, Connie stopped her sobbing and looked up.

“You’re not ‘tainted’ like you might think, Connie,” Julia went on. “Yes, you might have done something stupid…” There was no glossing over that, and Connie wouldn’t want her to anyway, “…but it’s hardly going to ruin the rest of your life! I’m sure there are plenty of girls you were at school with who ended up in far worse situations than you, and I’m positive that most of them still found good men and got married.”“

You think so?”

“Absolutely.”

There was a slight pause from Connie before she started wibbling again. “But why would they want me when they can have perfect Len?”

Julia turned to face Connie directly and shook her lightly. “Stop that! Len isn’t perfect, anymore than you are! You and Len are totally different people – there is no comparison at all! You should have realised that by now, Connie. You spent so much time proving to us you were more than just one of the Maynard triplets, now you’re falling into the same trap yourself! Get a grip, Connie!”

Having batted Julia’s arms away from her, Connie sniffed and rubbed the back of her hand across her nose. “I suppose you’re right.”

“I know I’m right.” Julia relaxed a little when she realised she had made a small breakthrough. “Now, you just sit there a while, and I’ll get us a nice cup of hot milky coffee. Okay?”

“Okay.” Connie’s voice was faint but considerably more solid than it had been.-----Suppose I should really get on with writing more of it!

Well, Connie would know she was keeping a secret, and wouldn't feel right about that. And reemmebr she is still sheltered, though a bit more liberated than before.

And no one ever said Connie had to be logical!! Smile -

----

Though Connie was persuaded to join them on subsequent evening excursions, she made it a point to avoid overindulgence in alcohol. And to completely avoid men. Things were far simpler that wat, she decided, and the first time in ages, Connie felt free.

And Connie rather enjoyed that feeling. Other than her friends and Len, Connie was not tied to anyone ans she took full advantage of that fact. Her extra curricular activities suddenly took on a more significant role, especially the newspaper and an amateur dramatics society. Her days were far more full than they had ever been since school, but not so full that she didn’t miss the companionship of a partner at times. Before she realised it, it was the middle of the summer term and exams were approaching.

On this particular evening, Connie was preparing for a blitz on one of her articles. The deadline wasn’t until the following Monday, but Con had set aside part of the weekend for revision. Megan was out at a friend’s for the evening, which made today the perfect chance to work it through. Megan was a good sort, but it was always hard to concentrate with someone else in the flat.

Connie was about to settle down among her strewn papers when there was a knock at her door. Stumbling over her notes, she grumbled under her breath, “Who on Earth could that be? I told them not to disturb me tonight!”

Outside the door was a rather worried looking person, wringing her hands. “Len!” Connie exclaimed. “Come on in! Whatever’s the matter?”

Len's worried & wringing her hands - doesn't mean there's something wrong with Len. Hoping it's not that some bloke's wandering round Oxford talking about how easy Connie was.

#215:  Author: LadyGuinevereLocation: Leicester PostPosted: Wed Feb 16, 2005 9:35 pm

Oops, did I forget to mention I went away last weekend )

-----

Len did not reply immediately, but she did take up her sister’s offer.

Having perched herself on the only available seating, Len stared at the floor, not noticing anything. Connie sat patiently on the arm of the same chair, waiting for the elder triplet to speak. Eventually she did so, but what emerged was quite different from Len’s usual clear and confident tones. “I’ve got a problem.”

“What kind of problem?” Though Connie was intensely curious, she was primarily concerned about Len. This was so unlike her!

“A…. a personal problem, I suppose.” Still Len did not look Con in the eye.

It was evident that Len was struggling to find the words to explain things to her sister. Connie realised that she might have to coax it out of her, though it was obvious that Len wanted to talk about the situation, whatever it was. It was just Connie was so unused to dealing with problems like this! “What do you mean,” she asked tentatively. “Have Pamela and the others been bothering you again?” Try as she might to hide her feelings regarding that particular group of people, Connie could not quite remove the anger from her tone.

But Len seemed to ignore it totally. Shaking her head vigrously, she replied, “Oh no, nothing like that. No, not them.”

Connie looked up sharply, startled by the way Len’s voice had begun to drift. “Len? Are you alright? You’re not in trouble are you?”

“No. Yes,” stammered Len indecisively. “I mean I might be. I’m not sure.”

Suppressing a small sigh, Connie decided that she wasn’t going to get very far like this. “How about you tell me the story from the beginning,” she suggested. “Then I’ll be able to help you work things out.”

Len visibly relaxed. “Thanks Con,” she said simply, a teensy smile flickering across her face. “I just don’t know what to do anymore!…

-----

Lesley can't gloat this time! But I thought I'd best post more, and I felt happy with that part.

You ready to get off the precipice (sp???) yet?

----

Len visibly relaxed. “Thanks Con,” she said simply, a teensy smile flickering across her face. “I just don’t know what to do anymore!…

-----

… It all started when I first met Luke.”

Immediately, Connie’s heart sank. She herself had fallen foul of such things, and Len was even less educated than she in the ways of men. Her sole older sister might be an engaged woman, but she was far from knowledgable about the real world, even now. “Who’s Luke?”

“Luke is someone I met during my studies,” Len explained. “He studies French and Italian, so I didn’t always see him, but we shared a few classes. I never even notice him until after the argument with, well you know who. Then he started talking to me.”

Connie had a horrible feeling she knew where this was going.

“He was so nice to me and we became friends,” she continued. “It was weird – we had so much in common. Luke had been to boarding school like us, and spent several winters in the French Alps. We had a great time, just sharing stories.”

“So what changed?”

Still Len did not look her sister in the eye. “About a month ago, we were out for a walk and he tried to kiss me.”

By Len’s rather flat tone, Con realised that the feeling wasn’t entirely mutual. “What did you do?”

“I did what I had to do, of course!” exclaimed Len, a little indignant that Connie would question her, and for the first time showing signs of her usual self. “I told him no, and that I was engaged, but that I wanted to stay friends.”

“Good for you, Len,” Connie applaided, though she wondered slightly at the part about staying friends. Once she would have agreed, but recent events had changed her opinion somewhat.

Len smiled a little at the praise, but it swiftly disappeared.

Just for those people not attending the gather Smile

-----

“Things were fine for a few weeks,” Len continued, “but then it happened again. I pushed him away this time and told him I wasn’t interested and that if he couldn’t accept that, we shouldn’t see each other for a while. It didn’t end there though. He started yelling at me, telling me that I’d been leading him on all this time, and I had no right to deny him what I’d practically offered him already.”

Connie put her arm around Len and slipped down beside her. “Len, he didn’t… he didn’t force himself on you, did he?” she asked quietly, livid at the very thought.

“No,” Len replied, “He stopped short of that, thankfully. I did the only thing I could at the time, I walked away. He didn’t follow. Then on Monday I got a letter from him, telling me that I should follow through with my actions and how I evidently hadn’t been brought up properly. I tried to ignore it, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it.” Len trailed off and started to sniffle.

Connie held Len even tighter. She shouldn’t be having to go through things like this, it simply wasn’t right! “It’s okay, Len, take your time. I’m here for as long as you need me.” The words sounded strange to Connie’s ears, but she felt them deeply. Now she knew how Len, Mamma, Mary Lou and the others felt when reaching out to help people.

After a few moment, Len carried on with her retelling of the story. “There was another letter that said pretty much the same thing. I didn’t respond to that either.” She paused. “Then today… he cornered me after my seminar. Everyone else had gone, and there was just me. He told me that I was just a silly little schoolgirl and I didn’t know anything about real life, even if I had got engaged to the first man I met. He said that I was acting like a tramp and if I wasn’t going to go with him I shouldn’t have led him on like that. He was really angry! I thought he was going to hurt me, but one of the professors arrived early for the next seminar, and I was able to get away from him.”

She turned to face her sister, revealing eyes that were glistening with fresh tears. “I didn’t do anything wrong, did I Connie? You know more about these things than me. I thought I could just be friends with him – was I wrong? How could I mess it up so badly? What will Reg think of me now?” Len buried her head in Connie’s shoulder and wept soundly.

If the situation hadn’t been so awful, Connie would not have been able to help smiling at the irony. Connie has spent so much time thinking that Len was the perfect one and that no one would want the tainted younger sister, and now Len was facing a not too dissimilar thought. But it was not a nice place to be, and Connie wanted to help Len sort this out before things got even worse.

“You didn’t mess up at all,” Connie soothed. “There was nothing at all that you did wrong. You’re not a tramp, and despite what he might be telling you, men and women can be friends and not need anything else. He’s the one in the wrong, not you. He has no right to try and make you do things you don’t want to do.” Here she began to get angry again at the mere thought.

Len looked up at her with big grey eyes, looking more like their younger sister Cecil than a 20 year-old woman. “Are you sure?”

“Listen, Len, do you still love Reg?”

“Well, yes, of course!”

“Then you have nothing to worry about,” Con decided matter of factly. “You’ve done nothing wrong, and you still love him, so why shouldn’t he want you?”

Flinging her arms around Connie’s neck and hugging her tightly, Len ignored the tears and said, “Oh, thank you, Con! I knew you’d be able to help me””

“No problem,” Connie responded quietly. “And if he bothers you again, you come straight to me. We can’t let this go on any longer.”

Sorry it got a bit delayed

-----

“Connie?” Len’s hands trembled as she held out the note. “There was another one today.”

It had only been a couple of days since Len had come to Connie for help. After discovering Luke’s latest note, she had done exactly as Connie had instructed and brought it straight to her. “Why won’t he just leave me alone?” she asked quietly.

Connie took the note from her sister’s grasp and scanned it quickly before screwing it up into a ball and throwing it at the wall. “I don’t know, Len,” she sighed, “but it has to stop now. Stay here for a bit, okay?”

“Why? Where are you going?” Len looked rather worried, and not just because of the letter.

Placing a hand on Len’s shoulder, Con replied, “To try something. Don’t worry.”

She left Len standing in the centre of the room, looking rather lost. Connie might have told Len not to worry, but she could already feel the clenching feeling in her stomach. Having exited the room full of great intentions, within minutes the plan seemed only half-baked. Storming over there and giving him a piece of her mind was all well and good, but it was rather more than foolishgiven the circumstances.

Halfway down the stairs, Connie paused to consider her options. She briefly considered going to the police, or someone within the university, however she dismissed that eventually, as even if they could do anything, they would probably take far too long over it. Something had to be done, and soon, that much was evident, but it was becoming increasingly obvious she could not act on her own.

There was one person who might have an idea what to do, Connie decided. Jumping down the remaining steps, she pelted it across the courtyard and into the building where Steph Watson had her room, watched from the window by a rather nervous Len.

I know I haven't finished reformatting the previous posts, but though I should celebrate the new board!

Unfortunately, after this part, there will be a bit of a hiatus, as I have some other things that need to be written by the 22nd.

-----

Connie had been banging so frantically on Steph’s door that she practically fell through it when it was opened.

“Woah, Connie!” Steph laughed and she quickly ducked out of the way. “Hold yer horses there, girl!” She stopped as she caught the look on Con’s face. “’Ere, what’s wrong with you? Yer look ready to t’ kill someone!”

“I feel like it too,” Connie replied aggresively as she settled onto the bed. Quickly she explained the situation to her friend.

The expression on Steph’s face grew steadily darker as Con continued with the story and once she was brought up to date, a stream of expletives flowed from her mouth. “Tha’ ain’t righ’! ‘E deserves a good poundin’” As if to illustrate her point, she hit her fist into her hand a few times.

“I know,” Connie agreed, “but we can’t really do that, and something needs to be done, and soon! Len’s a wreck over it. I can’t just stand here and let him treat my sister that way!”

Steph kicked off her house slippers and forced her feet into a pair of outdoor shoes. “Well, wha’ are yer waitin’ for?” she asked once she realised that Connie hadn’t moved.

“I can’t just march over there and tell him what I think of him?” Connie protested.

“Yes, yer can.” Steph took hold of Connie’s arm and pulled her in the direction of the door. “At leas’, yer can if I’m there t’ back yer up.”

Shrugging, Connie followed Steph. With her Northern friend to accompany her there, Connie knew she wouldn’t feel half as vulnerable as she would on her own. And it did seem to be the best route available.

Before she had travelled more than five feet, Connie was certain of what it was she needed to do, and more determined than ever to carry it out. No one treated her sister like that!

Won't be any more until sometime after the 22nd unfortunately

Though the extra page is confusing me greatly.

Took a little longer than anticipated!

And I realised I never finished re-editing the paragraphs back in!

-----

Connie paused outside the door, Steph drawing to a halt behind her, and then took a deep breath before knocking on the door of the room Luke shared. She might be justified in her anger on Len’s behalf, but it was still no easy task.

Though she expected a response, Connie was still caught off guard when the door swung open and she found herself face to face with a curly haired blonde lad with a cheeky smile just like her brother Mike. Something strangely familiar about him as well. As she briefly considered that thought, Con wondered if it they had once chatted in a café. If she was correct, he had commented on the book she had been reading and they had got into a very involved conversation about it. He must have the misfortune to be Luke’s roommate, Connie decided.

“Hello ladies,” he said brightly. “Would you like to come in?”

The two girls exchanged quick glances as they followed his grand sweep of the arm inside. It was better than standing in the doorway at least, though both were still apprehensive.

“I’m sorry about the mess,” he added, though the place was almost immaculate compared to both Connie’s and Steph’s rooms. “I’ve only just got in from cricket practice, and I wasn’t expecting company. Please, take a seat.” He gestured towards the sofa, and took up the seat opposite them, eager to hear them out. “Now, what can I do for you?”

Rather stunned by his helpful manner, Connie took a moment to reply. “We’re looking for Luke,” she said simply. “Is he around?”

“Why, that would be me!” he laughed. “But I’m afraid I don’t know who you are, though I do recognise you. Didn’t we have a conversation over coffee a while back?”

Now Connie was confused. This was Luke? It didn’t make any sense. “Yes, that was me,” she agreed, unsure of how to proceed after that revelation. “It was a fascinating conversation.”

Luke looked into the distance for a moment, deep in thought. Then he snapped his fingers and said excitedly, “It was about a book, wasn’t it? ‘L'Étranger’ by Albert Camus wasn’t it? I remember that I spotted the title and just had to comment on it!”

Blushing a little, Connie replied in the affirmative, amazed that he even recalled their brief exchange.

He flashed a stunning smile in her direction. “Somehow I doubt that’s the reason for your being here, however much you enjoyed it.”

“You’re right, I’m not,” Connie replied bluntly, “I’m here about Len,” Perhaps there was some mistake here, or a misunderstanding. Things just didn’t add up.

Thank you LadyG! Hmmm is Luke not as nice as he seems or is Len overreacting to a simple misunderstanding?

Oops! It seems that was about three weeks!

-----

A dark shadow fell across his face. “Len,” he sighed. “That whole situation was truly regrettable.”

“How do you mean?” Connie asked quietly, curious as to his side of the story. Her anger on Len’s behalf was still there, but simmering lightly under the surface, partially calmed by Luke’s friendly words.

“Well, I’m sure Len has already given you her version of events,” Luke said, his eyes dropping from Connie’s gaze. “It’s only fair that I give you mine. Correct the bias and all.”

He took a deep breath and plunged into the story. “I’ll assume you know how we met, I don’t really see how she can distort that part of it. We became friends, as I’m sure you already know too. Then things changed; I started to have feelings for her.” Still Luke stared at the floor. “I kept them to myself as long as I was able to. But I couldn’t keep them hidden forever and had to tell her eventually. I just couldn’t bear for her not to know!”

Connie found herself warming to his words despite herself. There was a longing in his tone that reminded Connie of how she had felt towards Dr. Hamilton back when she was at school. That time was long past now, but she could still empathise with the feelings. “So what happened?”

“Well, I told her,” he continues simply. “And she seemed to take it well… at the time. She said she wasn’t interested in me in that way, but we could still stay friends. I wasn’t happy about that, but I accepted it for the time being. Then she started acting all weird.”

“What do you mean, weird?” asked Steph, speaking up for the first time.

Luke paused for a moment, deciding how to put it. “It’s a bit hard to explain really. First she just started avoiding me… I could handle that. But then when we did meet up, she started saying all these strange things, like I was pressuring her into something. It was like…. oh, I don’t know, like she thought that by telling her how I thought, she was already cheating on fiancé, and therefore I was to blame.”

He let out a huge sigh. “After that things got entirely out of hand. She just kept putting me down all the time, saying these things about me that weren’t true, and I got angry and said some things I regret. I didn’t mean to say them, they just kind of came out.”

“And what about the letter?” asked Connie curiously.

“Well, that was part of the anger. I didn’t really know what I was doing to be honest. I’d give anything to take it back!”

“Anyt’ing?” Steph entered the conversation again.

“Yes,” Luke nodded, “Almost anything, anyway. Things could have been so different, and now it seems I’ve lost her forever!”

Connie thought on his words for a moment. He certainly did seem repentent for what had happened, and his story was definitely plausible. As much as she love Len, Connie knew that her sister still wasn’t used to the ‘real world’ and still thought in idealised Chalet terms. It was possible she had read the entire situation wrongly. “So, you really are sorry then?”

He nodded vigourously. “Of course! I thought I knew Len, but evidently I didn’t know her well enough. You seem like reasonable people; surely you can see it was simply a mistake?”

Picking up her bag, Connie stood up to leave, with Steph quickly copying her motion. “I suppose that’s all there is to say then,” she said somberly. “But I think it would be best if you and Len kept away from each other.”

“I agree,” he replied gently. “Now, let me see you girls out. There’s no excuse for me not to be chivalrous!”

As he turned the door handle ready to open it, Luke added, “You really have to wonder about Len’s upbringing. I mean, her ideas are so skewed that I’m surprised she ever left home at all! The parents are to blame though, of course. It makes you feel sorry for her many siblings! There probably isn’t a normal one among them!”

A bit better this time - only a week and a half! Smile

I do love watching everyone discussing what my characters may or may not do ;)

-----

Con turned sharply to face him, the anger already rising to her face. “Excuse me?” she demanded. “What exactly do you mean by that?”

Somehow, Luke missed the implication and carried on regardless. “You know; some of these parents bring up with kids with some funny ideas about how life works. Apparently there’s another Maynard running about Oxford. Goodness only know what messes she’s got in to!”

Steph’s eyebrows arched considerably. “Really.” It was not a question.

“Oh yeah,” Luke continued obliviously. “She’s a triplet apparently. The third one wants to be a nun or something ridiculous like that. So out of date,” he chuckled.

The fury was already rising to Connie’s face and she was certain she must have already turned a dark shade of red. She wanted to hit him, to stop his stupid words - oh, how she wanted to! - it was simply not her style. A sharp glance at her friend quelled Steph’s intentions as well. This was Connie’s battle now, and she was determined to behave with decorum if at all possible.

“What makes you say that?” she asked, forcing all the calm she could into her voice. Con had never been a spectacular actress, but she could manage when she had to.

He shrugged. “Well, it is. That’s not what women are there for, is it. Can you imagine forcing yourself to remain chaste for your entire life? Why, that’s even worse from chaining yourself to one man!”

“Is that so wrong?” Connie queried faux-innocently.

“Well, yes!” Luke exclaimed. “It’s unnatural! Men and women aren’t supposed to stick to one partner for their entire life! Sowing their wild oats and all that! I can almost guarantee that Len’s fiance has known other women intimately, though it looks like he’s got a good deal with Len going on! Doesn’t look like she’ll be touched by another, more fool her. She’ll just lead them on, like she did me, and then spurn them. It’s just not normal!” He was beginning to fall into his own trap.

Connie was appalled by his bitter language. And to say that about Reg as well! Reg may not be Connie’s favourite person, but he was devoted to Len and Connie knew he would never lie to her. “If that’s her choice, then so be it! It’s up to her, now you, what she does with her life.”

“Len was quite happy with my attentions until she had that silly conscience fit. She was inviting my advances!”

“You know that’s not true as well as I do,” growled Con through gritted teeth. “She asked you to back off and all you did was pressure her further.” How could have ever doubted Len! Luke knew exactly what he was doing, and he’d nearly succeeded it getting her to believe him as well! Guilt flooded through Connie’s body, but it served to magnify her righteous anger

There was a nonchalant air about Luke that particularly bothered Connie. “I simply offered her a choice, that was all. She may have said no at first, but I know she still wanted me and was just too scared to show it.”

Connie took a deep breath before she spoke again. The adrenaline was making her stand her ground and push her point, but she still felt nervous just being around him. She had already been duped by him, and she was not going to let that happen again. “Your sugar coated words might have worked on Len, but you’ll find that my sister and I are very different people.” Not so different, though, she thought grimly to herself.

Hmmm.... probably not ;)

-----

“Sister?” Stunned, Luke looked directly at her. “Hang on a minute; I’m confused. You said sister? But that can’t be right! Len’s sister would be like her and you, well, you’re just like the rest of us, aren’t you?” His eyes narrowed as he accused her. Now that he looked more closely, Luke could see the similarities in their features, though the colouring was very different. If he had seem the two of them next to each other he would have known instantly, but apart it was a very different matter.

“I suppose I should thank you for the compliment,” snorted Connie, “but I won’t. You’ve already offended me and my family enough for one day.” She paused slightly for effect, before adding coolly, “Now, how about we make a little pact here. We’ll keep quiet over this, and in return I want you to keep well away from my sister. And me,” she added as an afterthrough, realising he would probably crack a joke about her wanting him all to herself. “And anyone else we know. That includes writing letters as well.”

“It was only a few letters letting her know how I felt about her.”

Connie shot him a withering look. “I’ve seen the letters, Luke. You can’t fool me.” Though for a while he had done just that. “I know exactly how you tried to guilt her into a physical relationship with you. You used every despicable and underhand trick in the book. And that has to end now.” As if to prove her point, Connie stamped her foot.

“I think that’s up to Len, don’t you?” This time Luke accompanied his words with a little wink and Steph made a motion towards him, but found Connie’s arm in the way.

“How dare you,” Connie replied quietly. “How DARE you! Len has already made it perfectly clear on several different occassions that she isn’t interested. Len is a lovely person, but she’s a little naïve. You know that as well as I do.”

“Do I?” he challenged. “You’re her sister and you seem to have a good grasp on life. Why should I believe that Len was any different? Afterall, you both had the same upbringing. This is just a game you girls play. You’re all the same, you lot. You long for a man and tease us, flirt with us, and then all you do is break your promises! Oh, Len may be more innocent than most, but she knew what she was doing. None of you are any better than the women of the night!”

This time there were two strong movements forward. Connie found herself directly in front of his nose, standing on tip-toes and glaring visciously into his eyes. “You disgust me,” she practically spat at him. “You’re not even fit to be called human. Now stay away from my sister, and stay away from me. If you don’t, I’ll make your life a misery.” It wasn’t a particularly Christian sentiment, but Connie needed to make him do this. She just hoped that in this case the pen really was mightier than the sword.

“Yer’ll be sorry yer were ev’r born,” added Steph, making some rather scary motions with her hands.

Luke gulped and said nothing, faced as he was by two very irate women, one of whom looked rather tough. Eventually he nodded, though still stayed silent.

“Good,” decided Connie authoritatively. “I’m glad we agree on this.”

-----

“And that was when we realised that we did have enough money, so it didn’t matter anyway!”

Connie could feel her eyes glazing over as Richard continued with his story. It wasn’t that she could call him anything other than a nice man, for he was lovely and certainly treated her extremely well, but he was just so dull! After her recent experiences, Connie had honestly believed that someone less vibrant would be better for her, but she was quickly discovering that some colour was a necessity. And his droning, monotonous voice did not help at all.

The approach by Richard had come as rather a surprise to Connie. He had always been one of the quieter lads, and Con certainly had no inkling of his fancy for her. Now Connie was beginning to understand just why he was usually so silent.

Her heart had warmed as he had stuttered out that he was wondering if she would like to go out sometime, even though she had barely noticed his existence before. The first date had been a little on the boring side, but at the time Connie had simply put it down to nerves on his part. However, things had not got better after three weeks.

Now Connie was left with a problem. As Richard became more enamoured with her, she was becoming even less interested in him. Connie knew she had to finish with him, for the sake of her own sanity, but she had no idea how to do so without hurting him.

Briefly, she remembered the smiliar issue from when she broke up with Roger . That had been different though; Roger had started acting strangely and not really caring. Richard had done nothing wrong at all, besides being boring. And Richard was rather more sensitive than Roger had ever been.

All these comparisons were well and good, she thought to herself, but they hardly helped Connie decide how to break the news. As Richard launched into a blow-by-blow account of his latest paper on the biology of some plant (science was definitely not Connie’s strong point), Connie’s mind shifted gears again, in order to tackle to problem of how to achieve what she needed to. By the end of the essay, she was still no better off.

Then he surprised her. “I was thinking that maybe we could go away this weekend. I’m sure my parents would love to meet you. There’s a spare bedroom you could sleep in.”

She wouldn't survive to walk up the aisle, she'd have died of boredom long before the wedding.

Excuse me while I kick hotmail, ebay, AOL IM and msn messanger! *kicks* Evil things.

Oh great, now it's another thunderstorm!

Anyway, here's more story!

-----

This was not what Connie had in mind. Stunned, she stammered a reply. “Oh, I don’t think it’s a good idea. I’ve got a lot of work I need to do.”

Richard didn’t seem to be put off. “Okay, how about next weekend then?” Con shook her black head lightly. “The one after?”

The increasingly shrill pitch to his voice alerted Connie to his rising panic. This was the moment she had to tell him. There was no other way around it, unless she wished to commit herself to a weekend away. That would be an easier way out, but Connie’s upbringing had drilled into her that she should never make a promise that she had no intention of keeping.

“Um… Richard,” she began slowly, “I’m not sure that would be such a good idea.”

He instantly became defensive. “What do you mean? They’re lovely people!”

“I’m certain they are,” Connie said in an attempt to sooth him. “That’s not the reason.” She took a long, deep sigh and looked him straight in the eye. “Richard, I don’t think things are working out between us.”

She watched as his expression dropped. “Why not?” he asked plaintively.

This was the question that Connie had been dreading, for she was not entirely sure of the answer herself. The only vague idea she had was the one she finally pitched upon. “We’re very different people,” she said, trying to sound as sympathetic as possible. “You’re a nice person – you are!” this last as he made a murmur of protest. “But we have nothing in common and we don’t share much in the way of interests either.”

“But… but they do say opposites attract,” he offered.

Connie smiled at him. “They do indeed, but it doesn’t always work like that and we both know it.”

Richard hung his head. “I suppose not.”

Deciding that it would not be helpful to stay, Connie picked up her bag and made a move to stand up. “I am sorry, you know,” she added simply. “I didn’t expect this. You need someone who will enjoy listening to you talk about the things you like. I can’t give you that, but I’m sure you’ll find someone who can.”

“Thanks,” he replied, without looking up. Connie gave him one last glance and then left silently. Indeed, the prophecy was to come true, but Connie was not to hear about that for some time.

She handled it rather better than I did, lol Smile

------

After a swift glance at her watch, Connie began to pelt down the empty corridor, her right hand clutching the collection of papers that was her latest article. She had already been given one extension for its completion and now Connie was cutting it rather close for her second deadline, which ended on the hour. Connie knew very well that she wouldn’t be given a third.

Connie skidded into the newspaper office at two minutes to, waving frantically. “I’m here, I’m here!” she cried. “I made it!”

The editor looked up from his desk and glared at her. “Only just,” he growled. “I’d practically given up hope. Put it down over there and wait a while, would you? I need to give you something, but this is far more important. If you’d brought this in earlier, you wouldn’t have to wait.” With those words he turned back to the proofs and ignored her, certain that she would abide by his request.

Temporarily crushed, Connie’s cheeks turned lightly pink and she began to wander idly around the room. The editor was always like this so close to publishing an issue, but then, perhaps that was why he was so good. Connie empathised completely with his struggles, as she had found herself in the same position when editor of ‘The Chaletian’, and Connie was honest enough with herself to admit that she had frequently snapped at others during the stressful times.

She was midway between an old typewriter and the window when a voice from the shadows startled her from her musings. “He’s not always like that, y’know.”

Flicking around quickly to the direction of the sound, Connie spotted a brown-haired figure sat in the corner, almost hidden by the hang of the curtain. “I… I’m sorry. I didn’t realise anyone else was here,” she stammered.

“No worries,” he shrugged tightly. “I hid to keep away from Mr. Moody over there.”

There was a slight lull in the conversation before Connie could bear the silence no longer. “I don’t remember seeing you here before. Are you a new writer?”

“Definitely not!” he assured her boistrously, before quieting down at the editor’s angry motion. “Nah, I’m just his friend. Apparently,” he aded as an afterthought following more wild gesticulations, at which Connie attempted not to explode in a fit of giggles. “I’m just waiting for him to finish. Johnny Burton, by the way.”

Accepting his outstretched hand, Connie offered her own name, and added, “I do work on the newspaper.”

“I can tell,” he smiled at her. Indicating the editor using his elbow, he said, “He might be a while yet. I’ve got some biscuits here; care to pull up a chair and share them with me?”

Connie did so gratefully, for she had worked extremely hard on her article without a break and her stomach was beginning to rumble.

“So,” Johnny began jokily, “you’re the one that put him in this foul mood then?”

Con only grinned.

The pair of them sat and chatted quite amiably for a good hour before the editor finally completed his work. He passed onto Connie the information she needed, and shoo-ed her out of the way, anxious to close up the office and leave himself.

It was only when she was halfway home that Connie realised that she and Johnny had never exchanged details, other than their names. She didn’t even know what college he was at! Connie let out a huge sigh. The first interesting guy she had met since the start of the Autumn term, and indeed for most of the previous one as well, and she had neglected to let him know how to contact her. Or even how she should contact him, though Connie knew she was not forward enough to ever do that.

The summer holiday at home had also, rather unsurprisingly she supposed, been particularly devoid of nice men. There was, of course, Roger, but Connie would never go back to him; they had both grown up too much that. Roddy still acted too young for Connie’s tastes, and the only suitable others around around were the Embury boys, none of whom were in the least Connie’s type. There were a couple of new young doctors at the San, however, Con knew very well their reputations and would not touch them with a barge pole. The result had been a pleasant family time, free of the distractions of the heart, and now that she was finally ready to consider such things again, she had already made a mess of it!

Connie kicked a stone and watched as it clattered into the wall. Perhaps she could speak to the editor next time she went in? No; that would be too embarassing, she decided, not to mention scary. Con really didn’t think she would ever be so bold. No matter how hard she tried to tell herself that if he had been interested he would have asked, every time she came back to the fact that they had hit it off really well, and how it had been non-stop conversation. It could have been wonderful.

As she entered her room, Connie flicked on the light and flopped onto the sofa, paper and pen in hand. There was still some hope in that she might se him at the office again, but while she felt miserable, Connie fully intended to make good use of it.

Yay for the shiny new board!

-----

A few days later, Connie spotted him in the cafeteria, laughing and joking with his friends. He didn’t see her, and though Connie debated going over there and starting the conversation herself, every time she moved to do so, she froze.

Her distraction did not go unnoticed by her own friends at the table. After one particularly long bout of gazing off into the distance, Julia gave her a sharp poke in the ribs. “Hey there; who’s the lucky fellow?”

Con coloured darkly and muttered something incoherently, but the girls were not fooled. “Come now, Connie,” Laurie teased quietly. “We know you far too well to believe you were simply writing a story.”

“I never should have told you about what I used to say at school!” complained Connie lightly.

“Definitely not!” Julia agreed. “But then we’d have no fun! So go on, spill the beans!”

Sighing a little at their persistence, Connie conceeded. “I met the blue shirt, Johnny, at the magazine the other day. We were both waiting for the editor to finish and we got chatting.”

“And?” asked Steph expectantly, leaving no question as to her meaning.

“And nothing!” Connie retorted. “We talked for a while and that was it! It was rather nice though,” she added wistfully.

Next Laurie took up the interrogation. “So is he going to call you then? Or something?”

Connie shrugged. “We… er…. we were so caught up in the conversation that we sort of forgot to exchange details.

“But ‘e knows the editor, doesn’t ‘e?” said Steph logically. “’E can always find out from ‘im.”

“Why wait?” exclaimed Julia, standing up as she did so. “I’ll go talk to him now for you!”

Quickly, Connie reached out and grabbed her friend’s arm, pulling her back down before everyone started looking at their table. “No, don’t do that!” she hissed quietly.

Somewhat reluctantly, Julia sat down again, having noticed the colour rise to Connie’s cheeks once again. “If you insist,” she said simply. “Though I don’t see why I shouldn’t. There’s nothing wrong with asking him!”

“I know, but please don’t anyway,” Connie begged and turned the conversation to other things once Julia and the other two had agreed to honour her wishes.

However, the little commotion did not go entirely unnoticed by all the occupants of the cafeteria, and Connie could have sworn she caught Johnny winking at her.

Haha! I now have my files back - yay!

-----

Two weeks later, however, there had still been no contact from Johnny and Connie regretted her refusal to allow Julia to talk to him for her that day in the cafeteria. It was not beginning to look as though they had both let the opportunity just slip past, and that made Connie feel even more depressed than if she hadn’t met anyone at all.

She was submitting two pieces of writing to the upcoming magazine issue. One was a standard article, her usual fare and nothing special, but the second was a rather morose short story, possibly the best she had ever written. Recently, with all her other time-consuming commitments, Connie had barely enough time to write more than a few poems. This story, however, had simply flowed from her pen and didn’t even need much in the way of editing; Connie had impressed even herself with this one. She very much wanted to show it off to others, and decided that the paper was the best way to do so.

For a change, Connie was easily within the deadline, and the usually panicked editor was pleased to see her, not even raising his voice a little. “Here already, Connie? I wasn’t expecting you for a while yet!” he laughed. “What have you got for me today?

“Two things.” Connie thrust the pages out in front of her. “One article, the one we discussed last week. And one short fiction.”

“Two?” he repeated in disbelief. “And early?” The head of the newspaper blinked his eyes and shook his head. “Are you okay, Connie?”

Even though she did not feel anything like it still, Connie forced herself to respond in the affirmative. “Yes, I’m fine. I’m just feeling very productive at the moment.” It was a bold lie, but one Connie could get away with.

“Well, thanks for these. I’ll see what I can manage.”

As she turned to go, Connie felt a surge of disappointment that her boss hadn’t mentioned Johnny at all, though what she would have said if had had, Connie was not really sure. A soft sigh escaped her lips; it was no good pining for something that would never come to pass.

Connie had just reached the door when the editor called her back. “Wait a minute, Connie!” he called. “I forgot… I was supposed to give you a message.”

Her heart leapt straight up into Connie’s throat and she turned quickly back to face him. “A message?” she managed to squawk, barely containing her excitement, yet not daring to hope.

“Yeah. Johnny was wondering if you’d like to go out some time with him. He can’t quite stretch to dinner at the moment, but thought you might like to go out to lunch.” The editor ran his fingers through his dark hair as though it was actually him doing the asking.

Connie clapped her hands together in an involuntary gesture. “Oh, I’d love to!” she squeed. When Connie realised how desperate she sounded, she toned it down a little. “Yes, that would be lovely.”

“Great.” He didn’t seem to enjoy running Johnny’s errands for him. “In that case, he said he’d meet you at noon on Friday outside the Belle Vue café.”

Connie veritably skipped home from the office.
