Con maynard lazily stretched over to pick up the phone.

"Hi Len" she said sleepily.

"Con! You were meant to be here nearly an hour ago. We are going to miss our reservations because of you." There was a certain edge to Lens voice.

"Len i told Reg i couldn't make it almost a week ago."

"Con please don't lie, and just come over."

"Len! Its the truth, ask your husband if you dont believe me."

"Con. Please just come over, don't you love your nephews?"

Con hung up the phone. She had been getting increaingly annoyed with her sister recently.

Anyway, tonight she had plans.

She went to the mirror and slowly took her hair out of the rollers she used to make her silky black hair curly.

She crossed to her wardrobe and pulled out the dark red dress she had chosen carefully.

She was just putting the final touches to her make-up as the doorbell went. She hurried down to get it.

"Phillipe" she smiled enticingly.

He pulled her close to him, "Con, sweetheart, i've missed you"

He kissed her on the nose.

"Shall we go now?" he asked gently. His arm encircled round her waist.

"please" she said softly.

They walked slowly to his car. He held open the door for her.

"Thanks" she started to say, but his lips met hers first.

She smiled to herself, as she settled into the car. She was so lucky to have him.

They sat in a comfortable silence as they drove down the steep mountain road.

He pointed out the window suddenly.

She smiled, It was the Jungfrau. It didn't matter how long she had lived here, it still comforted her to be in its prescence.

"It's beautiful" she said softly

"Its a poor reflection on you" he replied.

She shivered. She loved this man.

They stopped outside the restaurant.

He gallantly helped her out of the car, and took her arm as they walked in.

As they sat down at their table, which was a cosy little booth, he kissed her gently on the cheek.

She blushed gently.

"We have something special don't we?" he asked gently.

She nodded mutely. She had not dared to hope he would ever want more, till now.

"I love you Con" he said as he looked deeply into her eyes.

"I love you too, Philippe" she whispered.

Suddenly they were interupted.

"Phillipe darling! What are you doing here?"

She was blonde. That was the first thing Con noticed.

"Wait Phillipe, who is this?" she sounded angry.

That's when Con Maynards life started to fall apart.

"Ummmm" said Phillipe looking uncomfortable.

"Who is this woman you are with?" the woman was getting more and more highpitched.

"who are you?" Con heard herself say.

"I am this mans fiance. You husband stealer!"

"Phillipe is this true?" her voice was barely audible.

He didn't answer.

She stumbled out of her chair. She had to get out of this restaurant before she started crying.

She ran out, aware of the eyes on her back.

She was stupid to ever have thought they could have had a future together.

She was just a fool.

six months later.

Con looked contemplatively around her small flat. She liked the privacy it gave her, and after being a member of a family of thirteen for so long, privacy was important to her.

she liked being able to have a moments quiet every now and then.

Of course, now that the old family home was sold, she really had no more ties to this place. Her younger siblings were more like nephews and nieces to her at times, and it would be nice to get away.

Yes, she decided, selling this little place, her first real home, was the right thing to do.

It was time to start a new period of her life. To get away from all the sadness and heart-break that surrounded the platz now.

Basle, a big city, would be a complete change from the clinging atmosphere of the gornetz platz.

It was time to move on.

She would talk to Daisy about it, Daisy who had broken away from tradition. she who had rebelled.

Daisy had become Cons own personal agony aunt recently, ready to listen to Con, and sometimes con thought she was the only person on her side.

The phone rang, breaking into her thoughts,

"Hello?"

"Con! I have the greatest news! Come out we need to celebrate!"

"Daisy?" asked con laughing

"of course its me, your fabulous honourary auntie! though if you ever call me aunt i will have to kill you!"

Con found herself grinning, Daisy always made her smile.

"Well what is it? It must be important for you to actually pick up the phone."

"oh darling" said Daisy sounding mock annoyed, "are you calling me a technophobe again?"

"never!" said Con

"Good! cos' if i am, i'm a bit worried about what the rest of these oldie's are?"

"Daisy!" said Con sounding exasperated, " what is your news?"

"Oh that?" said daisy dismissively, "It's just a little favour i have to ask of you"

there was silence as Con waited for more.

"Ok, ok i cant hold on any longer. Im bursting with excitement. I'm engaged darling! Peter finally popped the question."

"Daisy!" said Con, trying to keep her voice cheerful, "How wonderful"

"Be my bridesmaid, sweetie?"

"I'd love too"

"Good! all my other friends are far too old!" said Daisy laughing, "come over tonight, and i can show you the new ring! Its much nicer than that one Laurie gave me..."

"Well that doesn't mean anything, Your old one was teensy."

"Don't i know it! Well anyways the kids are thrilled. They adore Peter of course!"

Con grinned, Daisy thought everyone adored Peter, and to be honest she wasn't far wrong. He really was a nice person.

"okay, i'll be there about seven. i cant wait to be dazzled!"

and she hung up the phone. She resolutely pushed all thougths of Philippe out of her mind. He was the past and he was finished with.

for those who are interested this is set about the same time as "back on the tiernsee" but if you haven't read it you don't need to tbh. Its not really relevant

"Con!"

"Daisy! Well lets see it then?" said Con grinning.

Daisy fluttered her hand excitedly.

"It's gorgeous"

"I know" said Daisy smiling.

"I'm so happy my family is going to be whole again" she said more softly.

"I dont think it was ever broken Daisy. You are a fantastic mum, and if anyone deserves this it is you."

Daisy hugged her. "See this is why i love you!"

"Now tell me, how is the novel coming on?"

"It's not! as you well know, I have lost my motivation"

"Its been six months sweetie" said Daisy gently.

"I know. Now no more of this talk, its all about you tonight Daisy! Now where are the kids?"

"At the Graves' as ever. What they will do when they move i don't know."

"Yeah thats something i wanted to talk to you about..."

"what Hilary?" said Daisy confused.

"No! the platz... I think it is time for me too move on from here."

"Your leaving?"

"thinking about it..." said Con

"Its your decision, and its probably the right one, but i'll miss you con!"

"I'll miss you too Daisy."

Though theirs was a strange friendship, it was a deep one nonetheless.

"The platz is emptying isn't it?"

"There is nothing keeping people here anymore" said Con sadly.

Daisy patted Cons shoulder sympathetically.

"I think you are right, you need to get away from here. Where are you going to go?"

"i don't know, i love switzerland and it is my home now. So i was thinking maybe Basle or another of the big cities."

Daisy smiled suddenly.

"Well you are in luck, because i was just talking to Roger Richardson this morning, and he is working in Basle just now. Go down, spend a weekend with him and look around the big city. He might even be able to help you house-hunt!"

"Daisy, thats a great idea, but i haven't seen him in months though, he might not appreciate me dropping in like that."

"Oh please, Rogers a great lad, he'll be happy to help you. And don't worry, they may be related but he's nothing like Laurie homestly." said daisy earnestly.

"okay, i'll write to him asking, if that'll make you happy! Now lets get on with this celebrating business... wait one important question first."

"what?" asked Daisy curiously.

"Do i get to help choose my bridesmaids dress? Because i might have to resign as bridesmaid if your idea of a dress runs along the same idea as lens..."

Con shuddered at the memory of the giant, ruffled dress she had had to wear for her sisters wedding.

"Well i was thinking bright blue with sequins..."

"Daisy!"

"How about a hot pink mini dress?"

"with fur?"

"Of course!"

"the worrying thing" said Con," is that i can see you actually trying to dress me in that"

"Constance"

"Peter, how are you? Daisys just told me the good news."

"It's great isn't it?" Peter smiled infectously.

"Peter, Cons just been saying she might be moving away from here" Daisy exchanged a meaningful glance with her fiance.

"Oh" was all Peter said, but he smiled.

Con looked confused.

"so Daisy told you she wanted you as bridesmaid?"

"Yup, and i told her i would be, don't worry"

Peter had his arm around Daisy's slender waist and was smiling at her adoringly.

Peter was a lawyer from Interlaken, his parents were originally from Scotland but he had lived in Switzerland for as long as he could remember. he was two years Daisy's junior but this was a little known fact because they had decided that the platz could not handle this scandal on top of the Rosomons divorce.

Peter was really a very amiable man, and he was one of the few people Con knew who were not in the slightest bit judgemental. He took everything as it came, and just got on with it. He saw no need to reform that which was not completely to his liking.

He had taught Con to live and let live, and she had found this invaluable once she had gone out into the real world.

"Well con, how is the novel coming along?" he asked presently.

"Don't even ask" said Con sadly.

"that bad huh?"

Con nodded.

Daisy swanned in at this point.

"Peter, where is the champagne? Remember only a small glass for Con." she wound this up with a smile. For Con was a notorious lightweight when it came to alcohol.

Con glared at her, but didn't argue.

"I propose a toast" she announced, "to the most darling pair i have ever seen. If you weren't senile you would be quite the romantic couple!"

She ducked at this point to avoid Daisy who looked as though she had been about to lunge at con.

Peter kissed Daisy, "I'm just sad i didn't meet you sooner" he said into her ear.

Con went home that night in a confused state. She was very happy for Daisy, and the happiness that was coming to her. Yet she had to admit to herself that she was jealous and wanted to know if the same thing would ever happen to her.

She walked in to her little flat, fumbled for the light and go the fright of her life.

"Len" she gasped.

She hadn't spoken to len in almost four months, despite living within walking distance of her.

"What are you doing here? How did you get in?"

Len turned mournful eyes on her.

"The door was unlocked."

"and you just think you can waltz in here unnanounced?" asked Con annoyed.

"You don't understand"

"No i dont."

"Con your my sister. You grew up there too. You must understand how much i wanted to escape."

Con remained silent.

"Lens the responsible one, thats what they all said. Lens just like her mother. Len can 'see' people. Do you have any idea how frustrating that was, to never be allowed to be just me."

"Len" said Con slowly, "i lived in your shadow for more than eighteen years. Remember, i was the dreamy one."

Len didn't seem to have heard.

"I have never had my own life, you know. There was that one year at university, and then i left. I didn't even complete my degree. I just came back here to become another baby factory."

"Len you made your own choice"

"did i? I love Reg, but i didn't want to be married before i was twenty-one."

"At least you have someone" said con angrily, "You have a loving husband and two beautiful kids. You should be greatful."

"I'm pregnant again"

"congratulations" said Con sarcastically.

"Reg doesn't want me to go on the pill"

There was more silence.

"I dont want to have ten children" she suddenly burst out, "I dont want my children to feel responsible all the time. I don't want to spend hardly any time with my children because i have too many."

"Then don't have any more." said Con

"It's not that simple." said Len

'Yes it is. Life is very simple. Live and let live. Now get out of my house."

"But... wait"

"No, Len. Wake up and smell the coffee. I am not married, and i dont have kids. I'm not going to live off snippets and gleans of yours. I'm tired of living in your shadow. Now goodbye."

"But Con..."

But con had already turned her back.

Crying, Len let herself out of the house.

Con couldn't sleep now. She felt better for getting it off her chest, but she knew deep down that it wsn't really Lens fault. Not completely anyhow. But the one person she really blamed she couldn't blame anymore.

Con hadn't cried about mama for weeks, so she hurriedly brushed away the tears.

She would write to Roger, she decided. She really needed to get out of here. There was too much bad feeling floating about the platz just now. and far too many memories haunting her.

She went to bed then, but the image of her sister in so much pain kept coming back to torment her.

Then she sat bolt upright suddenly. She had just called Len her sister. She hadn't done that in years.

The guilt was getting to her. she started to count sheep in her head, but she was forced to get up when she started seeing members of her family jumping the fence.

She got up and poured herself a glass of wine, and then turning her kitchen light on she went and fetched the novel of doom to proof-read what she had so far written.

It did not take her a long time, or a large quantity of wine to make her fall asleep at the kitchen table, and she was still lying there when Daisy Venables arrived the next morning with her nephew-of-sorts' address.

"constance mary maynard!" exclaimed daisy.

Con groaned. "what?" she asked groggily.

"what, are you doing?"

"i... i fell asleep" she rubbed her eyes blearily.

"Really?" said daisy with biting sarcasm.

Daisy started busying herself around the kitchen.

"don't you have any eggs?" she asked.

"Eggs?" asked con, who took a while to wake up in the morning.

"yes. You know the things hens lay?" Daisy's softened her tone as she saw the look on cons face. "what happend, connie?"

"Nothing" stumbled Con, "and the eggs are in the back cupboard. But i'm not hungry daisy"

"I'm not feeding you" was Daisys short reply.

She placed a glass containing a disgusting looking concoction in front of Con.

"Drink up" she said pleasantly.

"What. Is. That?" asked Con, starting to come to life.

"My potent but very effective hangover cure."

"i'm not drinking that Daisy."

"oh yes you are. You'll feel better after it. i promise." Daisy smiled sweetly.

"come on, and i'll tell you the real reason why i came over"

Con grimaced, and took a large gulp out of the glass.

"Oh, oh" she spluttered, "Daisy Venables! that was foul! who taught you how to make that stuff? Matey?"

Daisy burst out laughing at that.

"It doesn't taste that bad" she stated.

Con just glared at her.

"Okay, so it is foul, but it will make you feel better"

Con took another gulp, and then stood up and poured the rest down the sink.

"con" exclaimed Daisy.

"oh shut up" said Con bad-temperedly.

"Fine. I'm going now. I'll just leave this here. Now you can come round and thank me, once you have rejoined the real world."

and Daisy got up, hugged con and left the little house, to go back home.

Con stared listlessly at the little sheet of paper daisy had left on the table. Then making up her mind, she picked it up and went off to her room.

hey just to apologise for any typing errors as i am having to type this one handed... having stupidly scalded myself (in a sybil-esque manner) last night all dow one arm....

Con

Con stared at the sheet of paper, adn then scrunched it up and threw it in the bin. She wondered why it was so hard to write a simple letter like that? She didn't want him to think she was just getting in touch to ask for something, but that was the truth.

Hi

Its me, Con. I just wanted to ask you a bit of a favour. It's okay if you say no i'll understand. I'm just hoping to find somewhere to stay while i go house-hunting in basle. I was wondering if i could stay with you? it would just be for a day or two.

Yes, that was slightly better.

It would be fun to see Roger again. she had always liked all the richardsons. She would be seeing Roger at Rueys wedding in a month or two, maybe she should wait until then to talk to him.

No, she couldn't stay here for another two months. this place was stifling her. She needed some hope. and there was none of that here.

she suddenly remembered Len. She really had to go and see her. and Daisy.

She wrapped herself up, with more thought for comfort than elegance, and locking the door she went for a walk along the platz.

First she called in at the little shop cum post office that had recently sprung up on the platz along with the new housing. she posted her letter and bought a slab of chocolate.

and so it was, that she was wrapped up in a hideous old wooly shawl, munching on her chocolate when she saw him.

Philippe.

She turned around. she couldn't face him just now.

But he had seen her.

"Con" he said, his voice smooth.

"How are you, sweetheart? It's been so long"

she shook her head slowly. how dare he talk to her.

"I just wanted to apolgise for my shocking behaviour last time i saw you. I never told you about pheobe, because i ahd fallen so deeply in love with you. I couldn't bear to hurt you like that."

She remained silent, tying to regain her composure, trying to shut her ears to his words.

"I broke it off with her, Con. i couldn't stop thinking about you. Please dont be angry. Please can we go for dinner tonight, and talk things over..."

His voice was penitent.

His eyes stared into hers sorrowfully, searching for an answer.

"No" she said, "How dare you?"

His fingers were like claws digging into her shoulders.

"Please" she begged, trying to stop the tears that were threatening to flow.

"How dare you" he spat. Before releasing her. It had seemed like an eternity to Con.

She jumped away, shaking.

Con stood shivering in the cold for what seemed like hours. Her mind was all muddled up, and she felt numb.

How could she have been so dumb as to trust such a man?

Con wasn't quite sure where she was going. The knowledge that she had loved- and perhaps still loved- such a man was blinding her and consuming her.

con knew sensible, practical len would never have been with such a man,nor would strong-willed margot. only her, the moony one, would have been so stupid.

She looked about her, at first unseeingly then slowly realising where she was.

Her legs had automatically carried her when her mind had failed her.

Freudesheim loomed ahead, still, grey and lifeless.

It was souless now, and deserted.

No noise or happiness would lighten it again.

She felt the tears pricking at the corners of her eyes. The tears she refused to shed.

She, who had shown strength could no longer find it, for her heart had been betrayed and the knowledge that she was truly alone in the world was clear to her as she stared up at the hollow, empty building she had once called home.

she felt an arm across her shoulder which squeezed her comfortingly before turning her to face him.

"Con" it was a soft voice, serious but gentle.

Con turned her tear-stained face to him.

"Callum" she said plaintively

He just stood there, letting the silence flow around them and somehow his vey prescence calmed her down.

Callum was one of the junior doctors, he had moved here over a year ago and had worked in the large hospital which was currently changing rapidly under its new ownership.

They had met through one of Daisy's infamous parties and had become friends. callums quiet ways made Con feel restful and he in turned loved Con's quirky, moony chaacter.

There had never been anything in the slightest bit romantic between them but they had become close friends.

"I thought you had left?" said con quietly, shivering slightly.

Callum had left the platz for a slightly higher job in Zurich and Con had not seen him since.

"I worried about you"

con looked at him quizically

"Daisy spoke to me" he explained.

"I'm alright" said Con, even though she wasn't.

"I have to go back soon, i only have this weekend, but what about you coming back with me for a while? You can meet my new friends, you'll like it there"

he looked at her persuasively.

She looked one last time at the old house overhanging her, and casting a deep shadow. she gulped, and then nodded.

"Ok" she whispered.

He took her in his arms as she started crying again.

Con relaxed against him as she realised how blessed she was to have such friends.

She had stood like this many times in the previous months as she had grieved.

"I'm sorry" she choked into his coat.

But he just hushed her gently.

After spending a calming afternoon with Callum in a little teashop in interlaken Con returned home. She was happier than she had been since her Mothers death. The prospect of getting away even if it was only for a short while cheered her up, and getting to see Callum again had been a lovely surprise.

When she opened the door she immediately noticed a note written in Daisys characteristic writing, that must have been slipped under the door.

Honey, it read, Gwensi has just turned up and we are having great fun reminiscing, come over 'cause i really want her to meet my fabulous niece/ friend!! love daisy

Con grinned, this was just the thing to remove the last of the depression she was feeling, and it would put off having to think about this morning...

So, just waiting long enough to change quickly and grab a bottle of wine Con stumbled back out of her warm house and into the cold.

That was when she saw the saddest of sights, one that dulled even her bitterness.

Len gray faced, and shivering was sitting on a rusty bench at the end of the terrace. Her face almost unrecognisable for her red unseeing eyes.

Con rushed to her. Forgetting their fight of the night before, and their ongoing arguments over the past few years.

"Len" she whispered.

She put her arm around Len and was shocked at how cold she was.

"len, come inside, you'll freeze out here. Come on in and we will phone Reg to come over."

Len wrenched herself away. Her eyes previously glazed over, came into focus.

"You dont understand. i can never go back."

Con wisely remained silent. She hauled her sisters unresisting body back into her little house, and sat her down in the one comfy armchair.

It was no until she had a steaming mug of tea in lens hands that she started to question her.

"Len please" pleaded Con, "you must tell me what is wrong"

"It's Reg" she stammered out.

"We had a fight... we've been fighting a lot recently"

Len took a deep breath, as though to steady herself.

"The children" she whispered, a fear present in her eyes that Con had never seen there before.

Len's two sons were her whole pride and joy.

Con remained silent.

"Its.. I.. I thought he was cheating on me" she said eventually.

"Oh Len" exclaimed Con, thinking of philippe.

"He was absent so much, he would say he was at the san, and then i would phone up and he wasn't..."

Con didn't comment on Len calling the new hospital "the san", there was no point.

"I finally confronted him about it." Len continued her voice steadying slightly.

"He wouldn't say anything. I knew it had to be true then. Thats when i came to yours."

Neither sister commented on the fact that Len had not stayed long that night.

"Well, we have been fighting so much these last few days, but this morning he stumbled in and i shouted at him for so long, i didnt even realise..." she trailed off, fighting away the tears that were persistantly trying to fall.

"I didn't even realise, i should have seen his face. I made it so much worse."

"It's not your fault Len" said Con, hoping her sister wasn't blaming herself for Reg's infidelity.

"You don't understand Con" said Len harshly.

Con wanted to tell Len she understood, but even as she opened her mouth Len silenced her.

"let me finish. i need to tell someone"

even now Len hesitated, closing her eyes briefly as she let herself remember what had happened.

"He was all gray, and every time i opened my mouth i wounded him, i could see i was hurting him but i kept going. I couldn't stop myself con"

She was shaking now. Con watched her sister transfixed.

"I stopped finally. and he looked at me, oh Con, i'll never forget the look he gave me." She shuddered, burying her face in her palms.

Con wanted to say something but there was nothing to say.

"Its...oh con... it wasnt girls it was doctors... con, con he's dying."

Con threw her arms around her sister, as len lost the last of any self-possesion she had managed to keep.

"Len, len, oh my pet" she whispered.

"I kept nagging him and nagging him, i have ruined one of the last monthes of his life."

Con held len close, there was nothing she could do.

"Len, len listen to me. You come and talk to me whenever you want, but just now, just now you have to be strong for Reg. You have to be there for him. Make his last months happy ones."

len lay still in her arms for some time afterwards.

I promise it'll get cheerier soon...ish

It had been eight months. Eight precious months. But at the end of those months Reg Entwhistle had left them, leaving his wife a widow, and his two sons fatherless.

Len was to go back to England, she would teach part-time at a small college which specialised in languages. Money would be tight, but they would manage.

Len was alone in the world now, but she was responsible and she had done the worst of her grieving, in snatched moments during those months in the relative privacy of her triplets home.

Con, needless to state, had stayed on the platz, but now she no longer wanted to go but in fact needed to go. The idea that so much death and despair could happen to one family in such a small space of time, not only frightened her, but consumed her.

Once, the last need to stay strong for Len had gone, she had shown a morbidity and listlessness that had worried her friends.

She had begun to crave her own loneliness and struggled when she was with people, so she started to shut herself away more and more.

The only time when she had briefly come to life was when Margot had visited briefly, blowing a fresh breeze into her life, but once she was gone Con slowly wilted back into her own despair.

Those months of darkness, when every brief respite she had had was punctuated with worries about len and reg, had not been good for her. She had remained strong for Len, but though len leaned on her, con herself had no one to lean on, and no one to ease the pain and increasing depression she was feeling.

The funeral, had almost seemed like a relief, an end to the uncertainty, and end to what had seemed like endless waiting, and an end to the pain and suffering that had accompanied them towards the end.

The relief that she felt was deeply mingled with a sense of guilt at feeling free. and this guilt gnawed away at her to the point where she felt physically sick to look at herself, and to the point where she could not face len and look her in the eye.

Dasy venables, perhaps saw the most of the anguish Con was feeling, but even she had no idea of the depth and extent of the feelings con was harboring, and allowing to grow.

"To be or not to be" muttered Con sluggishly, as she decided to 'be' and poured herself another glass of wine.

This pattern of lonely nights with the wine bottle was becoming increasingly regular.

Daisy had tried to intervene, but had come up against such a wall of limp disinterest that she had been unsure how to go on.

Con was just nodding of, her grip on the wine glass slipping, as she heard the annoying ping of the door.

She left it, not wanting to answer, the small grip she had left on reality reminding her of her friends response if they saw her like this.

The ringer was adament however, and a moment or two later the doorbell rang again, somehow louder than before.

ping, ping, ping.

Con shuffled to her feet, unaware that she was stumbling, and wondering why the floor would insist on moving like that.

She groped for the door handle, her eyes bleary, and not bothering to ask who was there, she swung the door open.

The rain poured in through the door, only partially blocked by the broad shoulders of the man she found standing in front of her.

Con screwed up her eyes in an effort to make out the person standing in front of her. She was forced to look up at him and as she saw him come into focus before slowly sliding back out of focus she realised that she knew him, though she couldn't for the life of her place him in her mind.

She wobbled slightly and he laid out a big, steady arm to support her. It was dripping wet. It slightly brought her back to her senses.

"C... Come in" she beckoned.

he came in.

She staggered back into the kitchen, and as her eye caught the wine bottle, she momentarily forgot the prescence of a strange man in her house.

"Maybe you shouldn't have any more of that?" suggested the man. His voice was deep, and detached.

Con stopped, frozen as though she were a small child caught trying to steal some sweeties she wasn't meant to have.

"You want some?" she slurred, "Cos its mine not yours...not yours.. " she trailed off as her glazed eyes met his cool ones.

"Who are you?" she asked defiantly, "Why are you here? this is my house not yours"

The man decided not to mention the fact that she had let him in.

"Why dont you give me that bottle?" he asked again, more persuasively this time.

Befor eshe had time to protest he removed her glass, and calmly filled it at the sink.

"Sit down and drink this water" he ordered.

"Don't order me about" flared up Con, instantly aggrieved.

She made the fatal mistake of trying to move however, and found herself staggering.

he caught her neatly, and put her into her armchair.

"Drink this" he repeated, putting the water glass to her mouth.

"Stop it" she glared, "im not a baby!" unfortunatly this came out as

"Shtop itsch, not i'm a babee" which slightly spoiled the effect.

the stranger continued to ignore her, until he had forced all the water down her throat.

By this time Con had started to sober up, slightly.

she looked at him, about to open her mouth before closing it again slowly.

"Anyone ever told you you look like a stranded codfish?" he asked genially.

Con ignored her throbbing head long enough to glower at him.

"Is the room spinning?" she asked a moment later, of her silent companion.

before he had a chance to reply, she charmingly threw up, across the table, and all down his shirt.

Not long after this she lost consciousness.

She woke up the next morning, tightly tucked up in her bed, the stale smell of vomit hanging heavily in the air.

She realised she was wearing her clothes.

She went to sit up, and her head reeled, the aftermath of her heavy drinking taking toll on her.

She clutched her head, aware that she had absolutely no recollection of what had happened last night.

She opened her eyes tentatively. Wintry sunshine was shimmering through her windows.

Was that bacon she could smell being fried?

Surely not.

Then it all came back to her.

She had spewed on Roger Richardson last night.

thought i had better update this finally!!

Her first impulse was to crawl back under her covers and never come back out. She couldn't believe she had embarassed herself so much.

Then as more breakfast smells came to her (which would normally be tempting but this morning just made her feel nauseous) she realised he was still here.

She felt her face heating up, to the point where even the tips of her ears were bright red.

She sat up, realising that she was still wearing all her clothes, except her shoes, and jumper.

A quick glance at her bedside clock, a beautiful jewelled piece Margot had left her when she took her vows, showed her that is was almost noon.

It would seem Roger Richardson was no early riser either.

Deciding she had to face the inevitable sooner or later, Con stumbled out of her bed. Her sore head hit her as though a sack of potatoes had just been flung at her head.

She sat down quickly.

She held her head up with her hands for a few moments until she felt slightly better. Then she realised she was shivering. She was only wearing a thin shirt, and then as the smell hit her again she realised that there were traces of her up-chuck reflex on her skirt.

Perhaps a quick shower before going out to see Roger then...

She came out glowing, having decided a return to her old days at school was necessary to clear her head. It was possibly her first cold shower since she had left school.

She had somehow forgotten, just how cold a cold shower could be.

Then realising that she couldn't put it off any longer, and wrapped snuggly in her warm, fluffy dressing gown, she finally went out into her kitchen-cum- living room.

She opened her door slowly, and started to step out the door. She started to utter a feeble apology, when she saw him.

She slammed the door shut and receded back into her room. He was topless. Why was he topless, in her living room? And since when had been so muscular and tanned.

Con's eyes bulged as she realised what she had just thought. No, she had enough problems on her plate at the moment. Philippe was enough.

And Roger! No, that was just wrong. He was like a brother or something.

But why was he topless? It was november. In switzerland. Not exactly the time of year when you went about topless in a house you had just gatecrashed the night before. Not that there was ever, really a time of year when you should do that.

Wait, thought Con, her thoughts whirling off on a tangent. Why was Roger here?

he should be working.

Not here. Topless.

It was not a big deal, con reassured herself. She just wouldn't look, and even if she did. Was that such a big deal?

She shook her head vigourously, she was way too hung over to deal with this just now. It was not a big deal, she was just making anthills out of... oh damnit! what was that proverb again.

"Con? Are you alright?" his deep tones, muffled by her door, sounded concerned.

"Ye..." she muttered. Why had she run away like that. what was she twelve?

Oh well, time to face the music. She really should apologise to him for barfing all over him...

"Morning" said Roger calmly.

"I didn't wake you did i?" he asked, concened

"No, no of course not" stammered con.

"How about we just pretend last night didnt happen" he said abruptly, seeing her discomfort.

She sent him a relieved smile, that lit up her otherwise tired face.

"Thanks, just let me say sorry first."

"No need" he replied briskly, "but since you have, i forgive you. My shirt might not, but i do.." he finished with a grin and a mischievious twinkle of his eyes.

Con gave a gasp.

"Oh roger! I am sooo sorry. honest i am"

"Im only teasing. Remember it didnt actually happen."

"Right" said Con, smiling a bit now.

"Just so long as you turn the other way next time..."

"Roger!" exclaimed Con

"I'm sorry" said Roger, not sounding in the least bit as though he was.

"Though" he continued, "i 'spect your head is enough of a punishment for you"

Con just glared. her head was throbbing.

"I'm guessing it'll just be plain toast for you this morning?" he asked, keeping up the genial tone.

Con continued to avoid looking at him... and his bare chest.

"Not to be rude or anything but why are you here?"

"Roger" broke in Con, "What are you talking about?"

"Oh right of course" said roger, and for the first time that morning he looked unconfident, "well i'm offering you a job"

"was this daisy's idea?" she asked suspiciously.

"well... she had a hand in it i suppose" said Roger starting to sound a bit flustered.

"I dont need your charity. I can manage perfectly fine on my own."

"well of course you can, i am asking you to do this as a favour- i need your help not the other way around."

"I have been fine havent i, all these years all by myself. You haven't been here. You dont understand anyting about this place. I'm the only one left now. I'm all alone just like i always will be. So you can just stuff your stupid job"

Roger looked rather at a loss for words.

"Go! just go!" stormed con, aware how dangerously close to tears she was.

Con turned away, covering her face in her hands, willing the tears not to fall.

She waited for the door to slam as Roger left, but there was no sound.

She felt an arm around her shoulder, and fingers lifting her own away from her face.

She felt the tears falling distorting everything around her, as she swayed and almost fell, anchored only by roger.

As Con felt those strong arms holding her, for the first time she felt safe. She didnt feel completely alone.

She hadn't realised it, but as family member after family member had left her she had begun to feel as though she had to pull herself away from everyone else in an effort not to get hurt.

She still hadn't grieved properly for cecil, and her mama, and not at all for her brother in law.

She was aware that back in England her uncle too had left the world, and she was beginning to realise that though he was still alive her papa might be the furthest away from her of all of them.

"Oh Roger" she sobbed, "I have needed a brother around!", and she clung to him, as a rock in the middle of her stormy life.

Roger stiffened momentarily, but all he said was, "Of course i am here Con." there was a short pause before he murmured almost to himself, "I always will be"

"Come back with me" he asked impulsively, "It'll take you away from here, give you a break."

He looked at her anxiously as soon as he had spoken.

"Oh Roger!" exclaimed Con, conveniently forgetting that she had just shouted and bawled at him, "Don't look at me like that! I shan't bite."

He smiled at her tentatively.

"I would." she said eventually, "But i cant. I cant just impose myself on you like that."

"I insist." He said simply. "Con you look washed out. And i promise you, you will be doing me more of a favour than i am doing for you! If you want the job that is. I mean you are welcome to come down and not take the job. I mean.."

"Roger" said Con.

Roger stopped red-faced.

"I'll come. Now stop making a fool of yourself."

Roger gaped at her, and Con grinned back, through her tears.

"Well then" he said at last, "You had better get packed. I need to leave tonight."

"Tonight!!" shrilled Con.

"Yes. Now go pack." he instructed.

"Yes sir!" exclaimed Con, and she saluted him smartly.

Roger swiped her cheekily on the head.

"Okay. Okay. I'm going." muttered Con.

She went through to her room, and was surprised to find that she couldn't stop smiling.

Then her smile faded. He was practically her brother. She had even referred to him as such.

Nothing could happen. Con stuffed the first clothes she found into her old school trunk. Regardless of what they looked like and wether they were suitable or not.

Her head was still throbbing, and the tears had hardly helped that. And now it felt like the bubble of joy that had been growing inside her, had suddenly burst.
