Just an Ordinary Woman - part six
The CBB -> Ste Therese's House

#1:  Author: LesleyLocation: Allhallows, Kent PostPosted: Wed Feb 02, 2005 10:44 pm

The School had almost finished Lesson One when their quiet was interrupted by the sound of a siren. Those few near to a window looked out to see an ambulance draw up outside the Main Door and two Paramedics and a Security Guard rush into the building. The bell for the end of the lesson went before any more activity was noted. When the paramedics appeared once more, with an invalid chair being carried between them. Once they reached the back of the ambulance they quickly transferred the figure in the chair to a stretcher. Strapping the figure in, and attaching ECG wires, an oxygen mask and a drip. One of the paramedics got into the back with the stretcher, while the other got in the driver’s seat. The ambulance drove off slowly, its blue lights flashing.

In the lecture theatre the members of the Board were silent, unable to take in the recent events. Nancy Chester, busy packing up the defibrillator that had been used, smiled across at the Head.

“First time we’ve used the emergency bleep,” she said, “It worked well. Not that you weren’t managing OK anyway,” she added, turning to where Nell Wilson and Nancy Wilmot were helping her clear up.

“You’ve got the experience, Nancy,” Nell said quickly, “did we do enough to save her?”

The Nurse thought for a time, “Well she was breathing by herself, Nell, so we’d obviously done the first bit, got the heart started again. Whether it’ll be enough?” Her face looked grave, “I don’t know, she’s quite old, and her heart beat wasn’t strong. We’ll have to wait and see.”

It was a subdued group that filed out of the room, Madge spoke to Hilda, Nell and Joey, “I’ll go across to the Hospital, find out how she is. She did tell us she had a heart condition, didn’t she?”

Miss Annersley nodded, “She did, she also said she had a very short life expectancy.”

Sorry about the wait - was at the parents going through book - Dad is proofing the style copy now.

In the Real Hospital, the Intensive Care bed held a somewhat important patient. Not that the many specialist nurses, doctors and technical staff who looked her were aware of that. They just gave their best care, regardless of the identity of the patient. In fact only one member of the medical team was aware of how important the patient was, but then, Daisy Venables was able to remember her from her own childhood. As the Medical Director, in charge of the hospital, Madge had felt that Daisy needed to know exactly who she was dealing with. It was Daisy’s decision not to tell the rest of her Staff.

In Intensive Care, an elderly woman lay in bed surrounded by machines, she was propped up by pillows, with an infusion running into one arm and an arterial line in the other. A machine hooked up to the arterial line gave a continuous readout of her blood pressure and blood gases, especially the Oxygen saturation. Wires attached to electrodes on her chest recorded an ECG trace and pulse. A measure of the seriousness of her condition was seen by another machine, positioned close by, a ventilator.

Madge Russell was ushered in to the room and shown to a chair to the right of the woman, she sat there for some minutes, not sure what she should say. After some time the woman opened her eyes and looked across, although slightly muffled by the mask, her voice was clear enough,

“Are you unhappy that I’m still alive, Madame?”

Madge looked over, “No, Cornelia, of course not.”

The old woman smiled slightly, “Yet if I had died, it would have solved all your problems, you must have thought of that.”

“Yes, I thought of that,” Madge confessed, “I even, to my shame, thought of it when Nell and Nancy started resuscitating you, while Hilda phoned for the Nurse and the ambulance. I even thought of it while everyone else did all they could to ensure that you live. But that’s as far as it got, just the thought.”

Cornelia shook her head in mock reproach, “You’ll have to be far more ruthless my dear, if you want to make a success of your business.”

“No thank you Cornelia, I might then become something I’m not, and in any case, I do not have a business, or at least, not for much longer.”

There was silence for a time, then Cornelia spoke, “You will have the money to start again though,” she sighed, “I suppose you are expecting me to say that, because of your actions, and those of the Board, that I won’t go through with it?”

Madge thought for a moment, “I had considered it,” she said eventually, “but I didn’t automatically expect it. You have been so adamant that you were going through with it, so positive, that I felt it unlikely that you would change your mind.”

“Well you were correct,” the old woman replied, “you had your chance, you could have let me die. When I die my business will fragment, so no one would have the 30%, you would have been safe. If you choose to allow the chance to pass you by, that’s your choice.”

Madge nodded slightly, “I thought so,” she said sadly, she stood up, “we didn’t know of anyone to contact, Cornelia, who do you have as your next-of-kin?”

The woman’s face darkened in anger, “If this is a way to get me to acknowledge that child…” she began.

Madge shook her head, “No, it’s for the hospital records, they need someone to notify in the event of an emergency.”

“In that case it had better be my lawyer,” she gave the name of a prestigious law firm, “they are the only ones that will be interested.” She looked across at the other woman, “And that’s how I like it now, after so many years I do not want or need anything else.”

#35:  Author: JennieLocation: Cambridgeshire PostPosted: Fri Feb 04, 2005 10:17 am

She will. Remember this, Corney is still attached to her drips and monitors, so she won't be able to supervise. Madge can always mount a legal challenge on the grounds that parents and staff need notice, and that would bring it to the public eye. Plus, you've all forgotten one thing that might be very important. In 'A Surfeit Of Rachels', Hilda and Nell bought their own cottage from RCS Industries. Corney will have to leave that standing, or face charges of criminal damage.

Sorry about this -I'm having real problems writing the next few bits. Sad

Back at the School Miss Annersley took a phone call from Madge Russell, when she finished speaking she replaced the receiver and turned to the other inhabitant of the room, a grave look on her face.

“Well?” Nell Wilson demanded, “What’s happened?”

The Head sighed slightly, “Madge says Cornelia is in Intensive Care, her condition is grave but stable, for now.”

“And?”

“And she is adamant that the takeover will go ahead.” Miss Annersley said sadly, “She hasn’t changed her mind about that.”

“Damn!” Nell looked across at her partner, “I did hope that she’d have thought again. Makes me wish I hadn’t bothered.”

Hilda Annersley said nothing at first, merely looked across at her friend with a knowing smile, after a few seconds she was rewarded with seeing the barest sign of a flush on Nell’s face.

“That’s better,” Hilda said softly, “now we both know that you couldn’t have done that.”

Nell smiled a little ruefully, “Well it would have been better for everyone if I could, don’t you agree?”

Hilda shook her head, “Not for you, Nell,” she replied, “you would not have been able to accept your actions.”

Nell nodded silently, then sighed, “Did Madge have any further ideas?”

“She did, she’s going to try and fight it through the courts, specifically closing the School with no notice. I think she has a case so I’ll not write to the parents just yet. If she loses, well…”

“We’ll start up somewhere else,” Nell said firmly, “I’m sure, if we pool our resources we’ll be able to help Madge start over.”

Hilda nodded, “Yes Nell, the Real Chalet School is not a group of buildings, it’s a concept, it will exist wherever we are.”

The pair spent some seconds just staring at each other, their eyes bright. Eventually the Head took a deep breath, “We’d better run through our scripts,” she said quickly.

Nell looked confused for a moment then her face cleared, “Oh yes, of course, it’s the Pantomime this afternoon isn’t it?”

“It is, and we both have starring roles, we should ensure we are word perfect!”

The pantomime that afternoon was a resounding success. Some of the older girls, especially those not originally of the chalet school, did wonder if they would find a pantomime entertaining. looking upon it as something for children, ‘kids-stuff’ and the like. But this pantomime was different, mainly because it was the Staff playing all the parts!

Kathie Ferrars and Ruth Derwent had decided upon Cinderella as their pantomime, and had thoroughly enjoyed themselves arranging parts among all the staff. One of the youngest members of Staff - Rebecca Gray- had been chosen for the part of Cinderella itself. And, among others, were Rosalind Moore, in a wheel chair, playing the old King, with Jennie MacLeod as the Queen. Sharlie Andrews played Buttons while the part of the Prince was voted for Nancy Wilmot, as the tallest there. The evil step-mother was played, with relish, by Pat Willimott, the Librarian, while the fairy godmother was played by Jeanne de Lachenais.

The production was full of jokes about the school and students, the girls laughing when the King was told it was his own fault for being in a wheelchair, as the Queen explained,

“That wasn’t a small hill you fell off, it was a mountain. how can you possibly say you didn’t know it was there? It’s your country you know!”

“Yes dear, but you know me, I’ve never been much good at geography!”

To a discussion between the Evil Stepmother and Buttons,

“Explain to me, you wretch, why that work wasn’t done.”

“Oh I’m sorry your Ladyship, I was reading this book…”

“Reading? Reading? Whatever good ever came of someone reading? It’s not going to get you another job is it?”

The first Act was more than halfway through though, before two of the stars made an appearance. Cinderella had already appeared, being given a list of chores that unravelled like a toilet roll for yards and yards. When she protested she was told that, now His Lordship, Cinderella’s father, was dead, her Stepmother was in charge. Cinderella would do as she was told!”

There was a huge outcry of boo-ing from the audience at this and Cinderella was left crying on the floor.

At the back of the Hall two figures stood. Unseen by any of the audience they watched intently, listening to the Stepmother give a speech on how dreadful Cinderella was, and how glad she was that her own dear, sweet daughters were so good and wonderful and pretty and perfect.

“Oh and that reminds me, where are those two?” she lifted her head to shout, “Hildegarde? Helena? Where are you?

Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson looked at each other, “That’s our cue!” Nell said.

Little baby snippet to whet your appetite! Wink

Hilda smiled, “Not quite yet, Nell, we have to wait for the third call,”

The Stepmother called again, louder, then a third time,

“Well, it’s our call now,” Nell said with a grin, gathering up her costume train in one hand, “Oh, and Hilda?” there was a very innocent expression on her face,

“Yes Nell,” Hilda was also gathering her costume,

“I locked your dignity in your Study, didn’t think you’d need it for the next hour or so.”

“Most kind of you, Nell.”

The two flashed wide grins at each other and stepped out; entering from behind everyone else, the School at large were not aware of their presence at first. The students were all sat in their normal rows in the Hall with a central aisle. Suddenly two figures appeared, One dressed in brilliant blue, the other is scarlet red, they wore huge, flouncy dresses, each with a long train, and each had large elaborate wigs on. Their make up was garish and bright and they both wore large hats. The School just stared at them, completely dumbfounded, as the pair, Cinderella’s Step-sisters, the Ugly Sisters appeared. Then laughter burst out all over the Hall as everyone recognised the two Heads.

“Mummy, Mummy, here we are Mummy!” Hildegarde cried, “Mummy Helena hit me!”

“Did not!”

“Did!”

“Did not, so there,” so saying Helena whacked Hildegarde over the head and her wig fell off to reveal another wig underneath.

“Girls, girls, stop that this instant!” The Lady moved between the two just as each of them removed a can of funny foam and sprayed it at the other, their mother got caught in the cross-fire!

At the laughter Hildegarde looked round then walked over to the edge of the stage and looked out over the audience, “Helena, there are people watching us!!” she said,

Helena rushed over, “No! What are they doing?” They both stared down at the babies of the Kindergarten classes directly below them, “Would they like some sweets?” She reached into a pocket and removed a huge handfuls of sweets and threw them out to the audience.

“That was very kind of you, Helena,”

“Not really, they were your sweets!”

There was another fight that ended up with Helena’s wig flying off to reveal a completely bald head!

Eventually their mother separated them, “Girls, I have today received invitations for both of you to attend a Ball at the Palace. It is said that the Prince will choose his bride.”

“Oooohhhh! Can we go, Mummy? Can we, can we, can we, can we, can we?”

“Really Hildegarde, your English! Yes you may both go! You are both to have new dresses, the dressmaker will be here this afternoon.”

“Oh no! She’ll have scary scissors, won’t she?”

“Now Helena, you mustn’t cry, you really must try to be brave.”

Hildegarde crept up behind her sister with a balloon and, using a pin, popped it. Helena fell to the floor in a dead faint.

The Pantomime was a great success, it was so obvious that the Staff were thoroughly enjoying themselves and the jokes and lines were hysterical Miss Derwent and Miss Ferrars had been extremely clever, both in their casting and in the words each character had to say. Also, as the School catered for all ages from 3 to adulthood, there were jokes aimed at each section. In the Interval, while the players had a well-earned break, the music staff had got the entire School singing, ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ was sung as a competition, each year responsible for a verse. There had also been a raffle - each person had been given a programme when entering and the numbers were drawn from a hat. There were prizes for someone from each of the sections of the School, only small but welcome nonetheless.

The pantomime went on for over two hours, the School boo’d and hissed the wicked Step mother and the Ugly Sisters. They cheered the handsome Prince, they helped the Fairy Godmother when she had to cast a spell (And she was the first Fairy godmother to insist the spells were said in French!). When the final scenes were shown, of the glass slipper, that it wouldn’t fit the Ugly sisters, then, just as the Prince was about to leave, Cinderella appeared, rescued from the attic by Buttons.

The very last part was the wedding between the Prince and Cinderella, while, in the Palace kitchens, the Ugly Sisters and Stepmother -they had been banished there - proceeded to completely wreck the kitchen and cover themselves in cake dough! When the end came the Staff felt rewarded for all their hard work when everyone rose to their feet to shout and cheer. The entire cast came on stage, as did all the backing people - responsible for the props and costumes, lighting and prompting. Also the Music Mistresses and those other staff who had made a small orchestra. The stage was somewhat full!

Eventually, after three encores and final bows, the School fell silent. Miss Annersley made her way to the front of the stage. Still in her Hildegarde costume, with large amounts of dough all over her, she took a minute to remove the heavy wig and wipe down her face. She smiled as some of the Kindergarten obviously hadn’t realised who it was beneath the make up. Holding her hand up for silence, she spoke,

“Thank you everyone, we are so pleased that you enjoyed our show!”

There was another burst of applause, then quiet again.

“You have been very kind, showing your appreciation for all of our hard work,” the Head continued, “But I think there are two that have yet to be thanked, for all the hard work they put in, for their casting, the story, jokes and tricks, I ask Miss Derwent and Miss Ferrars to please come up to the stage.”

Backstage the two named looked in some consternation at each other, then shrugged and, smiling, walked out to the front of the stage to receive the applause and cheers of the School.. The cheers went on for quite a while and both Mistresses were somewhat red with embarrassment. When the noise had quietened they both thanked the School and turned to leave.

“One moment,” Miss Annersley said quickly, “you haven’t had your reward from the cast and crew!” She nodded toward the rear of the stage toward her partner as she said this. As Miss Derwent and Miss Ferrars stopped, puzzlement in their glances, everyone else on stage produced a foam filled pie and threw them at the pair! Some bare seconds later, all that could be seen of the two producers was covered in foam. The School cheered!

After the excitement of the Pantomime, the rest of the week went very quickly. The Party for the Middles and Seniors on the Wednesday evening went well, with everyone enjoying the disco and dancing. The following morning the rising bell was an hour later to compensate. On Thursday the Juniors and Kindergarten had their Christmas parties with some of the Security Staff doubling up as Father Christmas!

During this time, nothing further was heard about the takeover; Madge Russell had been in to visit the old woman in Intensive Care, as had Miss Annersley and Miss Wilson, but Cornelia did not seem to appreciate the visits and just kept insisting that the takeover would go ahead. Early on Friday morning a message from Madge Russell reached Miss Annersley just before she was about to go across for breakfast. When she joined her partner and the rest of the Staff she was unable to say very much. But did manage to let Miss Wilson know that the closure of the School had been stopped, temporarily.

Once back in the Head’s Study, Miss Annersley elaborated, “Madge said that the Legal team went to court for a ruling on whether closing the School was within the Law.”

“And the Judge has come back that it’s not? That’s excellent news.”

Miss Annersley shook her head, “Not exactly,” she said quickly, “the Judge has said that it’s perfectly legal for the School to be closed – it’s privately owned and Cornelia has all the correct paperwork. What he has said though, is that we must be given proper notice. We therefore have to vacate the site before the end of March next year.”

“Oh,” her friend sounded disappointed, “well, I suppose we should be grateful for that. We can give the parents proper notice and it gives us three months to try and find another site.”

The Final Assembly that morning was quite a long one, there were a number of end of year prizes to give out, as well as the normal Form and Year prizes. Although there were no additions to be made to the Bravery awards, Miss Annersley did single out all of the Prefects for praise. Mentioning that they were all leaving the School proper now, having grown too old to remain. He following term there would be a new set of Prefects, from the ranks of those currently in the Lower Sixth.

She did not mention that the next term would be the last at Point Nepean, having already made the decision that letters to all parents and guardians would go out after the New Year. The next term would not commence until Monday 17th January – plenty of notice. She did, however, call a very short meeting for the Staff, to let them know. The rest of the morning was held over for arranging last minute packing and collection of girls and escorts for various flights and trains. Although busy, by lunch time most of the girls had left, along with those Staff accompanying them.

Looking round at lunchtime in the almost empty Dining Hall, Miss Annersley saw only those Staff remaining on-site over Christmas, the Prefects and a few girls who would be remaining. Among them Kelly Stevens, Evvy Van Alden and Janetta Mackenzie. Evvy and Janetta were being picked up the following day by Janetta’s parents, Con Mackenzie now fully recovered from her serious illness early in the term. Evvy was spending Christmas with the Mackenzie’s, a lasting friendship had been forged between the two girls due to their ordeal in the previous term.

Also present at the table were Cherry and Robbie Elliott and, seated next to Rosalind Moore, Geoff Stevens. Technically only Robbie was entitled to be there, but the Head had waved that aside, so Cherry could be with her son and Geoff with his fiancé and daughter. Cherry was sat with the Prefects, while Robbie had insisted on sitting between Hilda and Nell.

March? That's ages away (in RCS, not RL, obviously) Plenty of time for H&N and Co. to save the School. I have to wonder, and this is probably very bad of me, if there might be an assassination attempt on Corney. Not sanctioned or condoned by anyone at the School, of course. There could be a rogue ex-Chaletian out there somewhere. *gleefully constructing vague theories*

In Intensive Care, the old woman listened intently as Dr Venables and the Senior Cardiologist explained the results.

“Do you understand, Ms Baker?” Dr Kneale asked gently.

Cornelia looked across at him, her blue eyes bright, “I believe so, doctor, you have just told me I am living on borrowed time. That there are no procedures, no drugs, that will do more than delay the inevitable. You have just told me that I am dying.”

Dr Kneale nodded sharply, “I’m sorry Ms Baker, there is nothing more that can be done, we can only make you comfortable.”

The woman waved away his apology, “I’m not interested in comfort, Doctor; tell me, is there any doctor or specialist in the world that could do something? Money is no object.”

“There is no one.”

“What about a heart replacement?”

“You would not survive the anaesthetic.”

“I see, so you are telling me that you can do nothing?”

“We can make you comfortable, Ms Baker, but nothing else.”

There was silence for a time, then the old woman spoke again, “It’s not totally unexpected,” she said, “how long?”

The cardiologist paused, obviously uncomfortable at being placed on the spot. Eventually he said, “A matter of days, maybe a week.”

After a few more queries the consultant left. The old lady lay back on her pillows, her face expressionless, after a time Dr Venables spoke, “I’m sorry.”

“Are you?”

Daisy Venables looked across, “Of course I am, I’m always sorry when we lose a patient.”

“And that’s all I am then? A patient?”

Daisy thought for a moment, then, “Yes,” she said, “that’s all you are.”

The old woman looked startled, “Don’t you know my true identity?”

“Of course I do, but that’s not you,” Daisy turned to face her patient, “the Cornelia I can remember, the Cornelia I was at School with, she’s not here, is she? That person died a long time ago.”

“I suppose that when you transferred, you kept everything did you? Your money, family, the lot?”

“We transferred as a family, yes,” Daisy shrugged, “But Laurie and I divorced within two years. We couldn’t adapt, he couldn’t adapt, to the more modern way of acting, didn’t like that I could make my own decisions.”

“I’m sorry, what of your children?”

“All grown up, families of their own. I see them a few times a year. Before Madge contacted me I was fast on my way to becoming a recluse, having nothing but work, no life outside work, no friends, nothing.” She looked over at the woman in the bed, “I appreciate that you had a terrible time, but it wasn’t easy for a lot of us.”

“Your aunt had it easy.”

“Madge? Perhaps, but for everyone that had an easy time, there are others who had it bad. Plus those at the chalet school itself had the worst time.”

“I heard of Hilda Annersley’s ordeal.”

“Yes, she suffered more than anyone, but others came close. Bill for instance can sympathise with your heart problems, Elinor gave her a heart attack, she arrested. And some of the Prefects were attacked, one was seriously injured, nearly died.”

“Why are you telling me this?” Cornelia’s voice was angry.

“I don’t know really, except to try and get you to understand exactly who it is that you are attacking. If you go ahead with your plans to close the School, probably this place too, the people you’ll be hurting will be people who have already suffered. People that, a lifetime ago, you counted as friends.”

“I have no friends, there is no one to mourn my passing.”

“No, and that’s the tragedy, the reason I feel so sorry for you. Though actually you’re wrong, when you die there will be people to mourn, the same people that you are attacking. They’ll mourn your loss, but by then it’ll be too late, you won’t see it.” Daisy stopped there and turned away, when she looked back at the woman she had regained her professional detachment. She spoke formally, “My Staff and I will do everything we can to ensure that your last days are as peaceful and pain free as possible, Ms Baker, I can assure you of our best at all times.”

“Are you sure of that, Daisy? Won’t the fact that they know my identity colour their actions?”

“No one knows your true identity Cornelia, apart from the Matron Barbara Henschell and myself. I don’t think it fair to disappoint so many.”

Saturday morning saw everyone in the Heads’ cottage up bright and early. The intention was to go Christmas shopping in Melbourne, but Robbie was not too keen.

“But Mummy, want to stay in garden with you an’ Granma Hilda and Granma Nell, don’t want to go shopping, it’s boring!”

“I can’t help that, Robbie, you’re coming, “Cherry said quickly, “we all want to go shopping today.”

Nell leant forwards, “Of course you don’t have to go,” she said blandly, winking at Cherry while she spoke.

“No?”

“Of course not,” Nell said, “Mummy, Grandma Hilda and I will go and see Santa without you!”

Robbie, in the act of diving away from the breakfast table before anyone changed their mind, stopped, “See Santa?” His voice was full of wonder and his eyes wide.

Nell nodded, “Yes, he’s decided to visit Melbourne, the week before Christmas, to check out where all the good and naughty little boys and girls are living.”

Robbie turned to Cherry, “Want to see Santa, Mummy, pease!”

“Please, Robbie,” Cherry smiled, “of course you can see Santa, and if you’re really good Grandma Hilda will let you pick out a tree for us to have.”

Robbie ran over to Hilda, climbing onto her lap he said, “Grandma, can I choose the tree? Please Grandma?”

Hilda laughed and cuddled the little boy, “Of course you may,” she said, “but you must make sure you get a good one, so that we can decorate it.”

“I promise Grandma.”

The trip into Melbourne took up most of the day, late afternoon say the four on their way back to the car park, having spent hours out shopping. There had been a number of trips back before, to drop off stuff in the car before entering the fray once more. They had even been to a restaurant for lunch. Robbie had been very good, especially considering the crowds and the amount of walking everyone had done. He had been taken into Santa’s Grotto by Cherry and sat, transfixed, on Santa’s lap, unable to say anything he was in such awe of the great man!

Now, on the way back to the car for the last time, he was very tired and crotchety, Nell had lifted him up onto her back as his head was drooping and he was dozing on her shoulder. Hilda and Cherry were carrying a tree between them and they all had a number of bags and boxes. When they reached the car it was rather a squash to fit everything in, the tree had to be attached to the roof rack! Robbie was asleep before the car was out of the car park, and even when they arrived back at the cottage he only awoke long enough to eat a very small amount of supper and drink his milk. He was asleep in bed before six pm.

“You do know that’s going to mean he’ll be up early tomorrow,” Cherry said quickly, Hilda, the only other inhabitant of the sitting room, smiled,

“Maybe, but we could hardly expect him to stay awake, he’s had a busy day!”

Out in the kitchen Nell finished making sandwiches for everyone and brought them in on a tray, “No one wanted a big meal, did they?” she asked.

Hilda and Cherry shook their heads, all three sat in silence eating the sandwiches, Hilda looked across at the bags, parcels and boxes, “We’ll put the tree up tomorrow shall we? I’m sure Robbie will want to be involved.”

Cherry nodded, “Definitely,” she said, “We’ve never had a big tree before, nor so many decorations.”

Nell leant back, “Well, we didn’t have a tree last year so perhaps this will make up for it!”

A knock on the door interrupted them a little later, when it was opened it revealed Louise Chad standing there, “Only to let you know the time of the flight tomorrow,” she said to Hilda quickly. “Andrew and his parents will be arriving at Melbourne Airport at 5.15 pm.”

“Do you still want us to pick them up?” Hilda asked.

“Yes please, Hilda,” Louise smiled, “If it’s not too much trouble. They’ll be staying here overnight – I’ve arranged with Mrs MacLeod about accommodation – before going to Sydney for five days. I’ll be going with them.”

“You will be back for Christmas, though?” This from Nell.

“Yes, we’ll be back Christmas Eve afternoon.”

“No problem, Louise,” Hilda said quickly, “Come over about three thirty tomorrow and we’ll drive to the airport in plenty of time.”

Louise smiled her thanks and went to leave, suddenly remembering something she turned back, “Cherry, we’re going out tonight, are you coming?”

Cherry looked across at the older two women, “Yes, Cherry, we’ll baby-sit!” Nell smiled.

“In that case then yes, I’ll come. What time are you leaving?”

“Cabs are booked for 8.30,” Louise replied, “see you then,” she waved goodbye and left.

Back at the Real Hospital, an old woman lay back in her bed, thinking; earlier that day she had been visited by one of her team of lawyers, they had updated her on the situation with the takeover. To begin with she had been furious, but had managed to note a sneaking regard for Madge Russell at the same time. She passed on a message that she would like to see Madge.

Madge arrived later that evening, almost as soon as she entered the room Cornelia spoke, “Very astute of you, Madame, to arrange for a three month stay of execution. Tell me, did you decide that after your niece had revealed confidential information?”

Madge looked puzzled, “Confidential information, Cornelia? I don’t know what you mean, the three months was to give us a breathing space, time to find another location for the School and Hospital.”

The old woman looked sceptical, “You mean Dr Venables didn’t give you my prognosis? Didn’t tell you that I have only days to live?” Her quick eyes noted Madge’s shocked expression, “I’m surprised, it was the norm when in the fictional world…”

“We are no longer in the fictional world, Cornelia,” Madge interrupted, “and my niece is scrupulously correct when it comes to ’Medical in Confidence,’ I had no idea.”

“Ah, then you know due to my own error. Yes, Madame, I will be dead before Christmas. But your actions, although clever, will not automatically mean that you have won. I know I said that I have no heir, that once I’m dead the consortium will collapse and RCS Industries will be safe, but in the time available I can appoint an heir, or I can buy the shares from the different companies, so that they are my personal property. And I can then will the property as I wish.”

“Why are you telling me this, Cornelia?” Madge said sadly, “You had already made your wishes quite clear, this comes as no surprise. You have Point Nepean, the School and Hospital will close, having those three months will mean we have time to start up again.”

“That is your intention?”

“Of course, you may have won here, Cornelia, but we survive, we will continue to prosper.”

“While I will die,” the old woman said bitterly, “my fortune useless. Unable to even accomplish this one piece of destruction.”

“I’m sorry, Cornelia,” Madge’s voice was gentle, “sorry that you were hurt so badly that you feel you have to take it out on people who would be friends.” There was silence for a time, Madge, thinking the woman in the bed had finished, turned to go, she was stopped by Cornelia’s next words.

“”I will stop the destruction, give you back the shares, stop the takeover, if you do one thing for me.”

Madge turned, “What do you want me to do?”

“Expel Evadne Van Alden.”

There was a shocked silence, then Madge shook her head sadly, “If you truly mean that, then the Cornelia Flower that I knew is already dead,” she said, “whoever you are now, holds no vestige of her spirit, courage or soul.” She laughed suddenly, “In any case, you are asking the wrong person, I have no jurisdiction over the students or Staff of the Real Chalet School. If you really want an answer to that question you’ll have to speak to Hilda Annersley and Nell Wilson. I wish you luck, you’ll need it!” Madge spun round and walked quickly out of the door.

The old woman lay there for some time, thinking, the ITU nurse hovered nearby, checking machinery and seeing that her patient was as comfortable as could be expected. The nurse did not talk too much, realising that her patient was deep in thought. At one point the old woman requested some analgesia and the nurse disappeared out to the drug cupboard to retrieve this. It was during this time that the old woman had an unexpected visitor.

When the door opened, Cornelia looked across lethargically, expecting to see the nurse, she was surprised to see a young girl, barely fourteen years old, with short curly blond hair and blue eyes. “Oh, I’m sorry Miss,” she said, “I was looking for Nurse Wilkie, sorry to disturb you.”

“You didn’t disturb me, girl, I wasn’t asleep. Who are you?”

“Kelly,” Kelly replied, “Kelly Stevens, my dad came over to have a chat with Dr Venables about if he was fit to fly yet and I thought I’d nip up here. I was a patient here a few months back, had serious burns from an explosion at the School.”

“Explosion at the School? How did that happen?”

Kelly coloured, “Well actually it was my own fault, it was my first term at the School and I couldn’t keep up with the Chemistry, I thought I’d got a smoke bomb, but it was the real thing. I would have died except that Bill saved me. That’s the Chemistry teacher, Miss Wilson, she’s also the Deputy Head.”

“I know who you mean.”

At that moment the ITU nurse returned, “What are you doing in here?” she said quickly, “This is restricted. Off with you now!”

“Oh, I’m sorry Nurse, I was looking for Nurse Wilkie, she looked after me when I was in here, just wanted to show her that my burns were nearly healed.”

The old woman stirred, “Let her stay, Nurse, I’m interested in why she was here, and lets face it, I’ve nothing else to do.”

The ITU nurse frowned, then, remembering how ill her patient was, she relented, “Alright, she may stay, but only for a short while.”

Kelly walked into the room and pulled up a chair, sitting beside the old woman’s bed she smiled rather shyly, “Are you going to be in here long, Miss Er…?”

“…Ms Baker,” Cornelia replied, “and no, I’ll not be here long, I’ll have left before Christmas.”

“That’s good, can’t think of anything worse than having to spend Christmas in hospital, away from family and friends.”

“Hmmm,” Cornelia’s reply was non-committal, “tell me child, how did you happen to have a bomb in your Science lesson?”

Kelly went red again, “It was very silly,” she said, “you see, I’d got friendly with this girl I’d spoken to on the phone, at least, I thought she was a girl. It was before I left England. When I started at the Real Chalet School I really enjoyed it, it’s a great school, you know? But one bit I didn’t like were the Science lessons.” Kelly stopped for a few seconds, considering, “Well I liked Physics, and I suppose Earth Sciences was OK, but Biology and especially Chemistry – gross!”

Cornelia gave a half smile, “I cannot say that Science classes were ever my favourite,” she said, “and my Science Mistress could make you feel about an inch high!”

“Exactly, Miss Wilson is a really nice Mistress, but if she loses her temper she is soooo sarcastic it hurts!” Kelly grinned at the old lady, and Cornelia found herself responding.

“I know exactly what you mean, child, my Science Mistress was the same.”

“D’ya think they have lessons in it? Just the Science staff I mean?” Kelly said, then corrected herself, “Oh no, because Rosalind’s almost as bad…”

“Rosalind?”

“Oh, that’s Miss Moore, she’s the Geography Department Head,” Kelly said quickly, “I can call her Rosalind outside School ‘cos she’s marrying my dad!”

“Ah, I see,” Cornelia didn’t really, but didn’t want to stop the girl.

“Anyway, yes, Ros is almost as bad, and I’ve heard that the Head can be even worse! Not that she’s ever said anything like that ” She shivered slightly, “I know the one time I had to see her for bad behaviour she didn’t need to say anything, just one look from her was enough. But I was having problems with Miss Wilson, see we had this test on the periodic table, and I couldn’t do it! I mean, when does anyone, apart from Chemistry teachers, need to know about that!”

The old woman suppressed a smile, it was as though she were listening to herself at the same age! She replied quickly, “I’ve never needed to know,” she confirmed.

“Yeah, well, Bill wasn’t going to take that as an answer was she? And I’d already been docked of one Saturday’s free time, so when Rachel said she could send me a smoke bomb, so it would make loads of smoke and Bill’d have to cancel the lesson, I thought that was great.”

Kelly stopped for a moment, aware that she’d said far more to this stranger, this old woman, than she’d said even to her father.

Cornelia felt herself drawn to the girl, in some way she reminded her of someone she had known when a child herself, and her attitude was certainly similar to the fourteen year old child that she herself had been. “So what happened?”

Kelly swallowed slightly, “It wasn’t a smoke bomb,” she said faintly, “it was a real bomb. This Rachel wasn’t another girl, she was a woman with a grudge against the School.”

Cornelia looked interested, “Oh, what grudge?”

Kelly shrugged, “Don’t know really, something about thinking her mum had been expelled by the School, or something, I didn’t get the details, and anyway, holding a grudge for that long, and with people that had nothing to do with it, she was just nuts.”

Cornelia swallowed sharply, the innocent words from the child sitting beside her suddenly seeming to pierce her heart. She took a deep breath and spoke, “So a real bomb? And you were hurt?”

Kelly nodded, her eyes darkening as she remembered, “I was thrown back, off the lab stool, I slid across the floor, ended up beneath another bench. There was fire everywhere, I couldn’t move, couldn’t call out, I heard everyone else leave the lab and the door was slammed shut. Then everything around me started burning, and my clothes caught light.” She stopped for a moment, her face pale.

Cornelia reached across to place a hand on the girl’s arm, “What happened?”

Kelly looked the old lady in the eye, “Miss Wilson, she came back, came into the lab even though it was burning, she rescued me.”

Cornelia was suddenly struck with an image from her own schooldays, a laboratory, an explosion, and her friend Evadne Lannis being carried out of the lab by the Science Mistress. “Miss Wilson was very brave,” she said softly.

“Yes,” Kelly agreed, “and I was so badly hurt I couldn’t even tell anyone that it was my fault, couldn’t thank her. Felt really bad about that, especially as some had thought she’d done it herself.”

“No, she wouldn’t have done that!” Cornelia was adamant, Kelly looked over in surprise and the old lady swiftly adjusted her sentence, “No decent School Mistress would have done that.”

Kelly nodded, “Yes, I know what you mean, all the Mistresses here are decent. I’ve been to five different boarding schools, and this is the best, I’m really glad that Dad intends for me to stay here.” She stopped and swallowed, “Dad was badly hurt at Half-Term, and Miss Annersley, she’s the Headmistress, told me that even if the worst happened, I’d not be alone, that they would look after me. Luckily Dad got better, but it was so good to hear that, to know that everyone cares so much.”

There was a sound outside, “Kelly? Kelly are you there?” It was a man’s voice.

Kelly stood up, “That’s Dad,” she said, “I’ve got to go. I’ve enjoyed talking with you, Ms Baker. Can I come and see you again some time?”

Cornelia smiled, “You mean ‘may I’ child, and yes, I’d like that.”

Kelly waved and left, behind her, in the ITU bed, the old woman lay back on her pillows, thinking deeply.

A beautiful piece of writing, Lesley - dare we hope that Kelly's conversation with Cornelia will turn out to be the catalyst needed to save the school? If Cornelia recalled the phrase 'You mean may I?' and use it in a correct context as she did in the last but one sentence, then perhaps there's hope yet. Waiting with bated breath for the next bit!

#184:  Author: LesleyLocation: Allhallows, Kent PostPosted: Sat Feb 12, 2005 6:41 pm

Sunday had been a quiet day at the Real Chalet School; being the last Sunday before Christmas, the morning had been spent at Church, however, that afternoon, instead of playing outside or going to the beach, the four in the Heads’ cottage had spent their time preparing the tree. It had taken some time, the tree itself had to be unwrapped and put together, it had then had its branches arranged everywhere before the four had professed themselves satisfied. After that there was all the different decorations, tinsel and lights to unwrap and place on the tree.

It had been expected that Robbie would be excited, and indeed he was unable to keep still, insisting on being picked up to place the decorations on the tallest branches, switching the lights on and off, and unpacking so many decorations that fully one third of them disappeared under the sofa, to be discovered at different times during the next week. What none of the others had anticipated, however, was how much the little boy’s excitement and enthusiasm would rub off onto them! Perhaps Cherry’s excitement was also understandable, this promised to be the best Christmas for her that she could remember, however, both Hilda and Nell insisted that they felt the same, certainly, in comparison the their last two Christmases.

By the time Louise appeared that afternoon for her lift to the airport, the tree was up, lights on and working and all the decorations placed. The lounge was almost full of empty boxes and packaging. Cherry assured Hilda and Nell that she and Robbie would tidy up while they travelled to the airport, and the two joined Louise in one of the School Mini-buses for the drive. Andrew’s flight landed on time and the three spent some anxious minutes waiting for their guests. When they appeared Louise and Andrew rushed into each others’ arms. Andrew picking up Louise and twirling her round and round, before lowering her back to the ground and gently kissing her.

Without anyone to introduce them, Hilda and Nell turned to the older couple who had obviously travelled with Andrew. They were both gazing, with some amusement, at the oblivious couple, the man leant forward to speak to his wife, “Somehow don’t think it’s an infatuation, Hannah,” he said, then looked across at the two, Holding out his hand he said, “Hello there, I’m Oliver, this is Hannah St John, we have the dubious privilege of being Andrew’s parents. I understand you fill the same niche for young Louise?”

Hilda stepped forwards, introducing herself and her partner, “Welcome to Australia, Your Honour…” she began.

“Hey, now come on,” Oliver, a High Court Judge, protested, “I’ve just flown thousands of miles to get away from all that. If you can’t call me Oliver I’ll have to address you as Headmistress for the rest of the holiday!”

“Good grief, no! Don‘t do that, please, Oliver,” this from Nell, “she has enough reminders of that as it is!”

Hilda smiled, “Oliver then, I gather that you weren’t sure of their commitment?”

Hannah put in, “I think it finally dawned on the pair of us after we’d received letters from Cambridge for five days running in which the only thing Andrew did was promote Australia as a Christmas break location! And said that, regardless, he was coming here!”

By this time Andrew and Louise had come down to Earth somewhat and wandered shyly over to the four older people. Introductions were made all round, the St John’s greeting Louise warmly. It seemed that they liked what they saw. After quickly loading all of their luggage into the minibus everyone settled in for the trip back to the School. Discussion quickly progressed to how the young couple had met,

“Can’t tell you how good it was, to hear that someone had finally told Ted Lovell exactly what they thought of his precious son!” Oliver chuckled, “Whatever you said, it hit home, young James has been forced to start taking responsibility for his actions.”

“I heard from his mother that James ‘ allowance has been stopped, he’s having to exist on a student loan,” Hannah said quickly, “she said they were both disgusted with his behaviour. Hoped this would be a lesson for him.”

“’Course, it’s Ted’s fault,” Oliver went on, “I warned him years ago that he was spoiling the lad, making him think he could do whatever he wanted, just because he’d got a title.” He grinned across at both Hilda and Nell, “I’ll be forever in your debt if you could give me just a hint at what you said? And told me how this lummox of a son of mine ended up getting a egg shaped lump on his head?”

“Dad, stop it, you’re embarrassing me!” this was from a slightly pink Andrew.

“Of course I am, son,” Oliver replied, “I’ve waited long enough, now you’ve found the girl for you I’m going to enjoy myself. Fairs fair, your grandfather did it to me!”

“Actually your father wasn’t as bad as your mother,” Hannah said quickly, “she’s the one that brought out the naked baby pictures the first time I visited!”

“Well at least I’ll not have that!” Louise said grimly, “Hilda and Nell don’t have any photos of when I was small!”

“No but Louise, we can still remember all the things you did as a child.” Nell said with a wicked look on her face.

Andrew and Louise groaned simultaneously and huddled together near the back of the bus.

That was lovely, but the cliff is still there and most of the board are about to expire from breath holding.

Sad I will confess I cheated. I had to take a breath to laugh at the last post Embarassed I must admit, it's the cliffs that don't happen that get to me! I wouldn't have put it past Lesley to have the tree decorating or the drive to the airport have a cliff on the end. Thank you Lesley.

See, I decided that finger/toe/everything else crossing was a much safer idea, although have you ever tried to read the CBB when you're looking at your nose..... That was lovely though Lesley, one thing though, Lovell, any relation to our Annis, or pure coincidence? JackieJ

#192:  Author: LesleyLocation: Allhallows, Kent PostPosted: Sat Feb 12, 2005 11:26 pm

Pure coincidence, Jackie.

The rest of the afternoon and evening was spent in the company of the St Johns, Cherry and Robbie were introduced by Hilda as, “My adopted daughter and grandson,” and Robbie quickly made converts of all of them. They were staying on-site for the night before travelling to Sydney the next day. They therefore didn’t stay late, still recovering from the long flight. Hilda and Nell said goodbye to all of them, including Louise, as their flight the next day was early and they would be getting a cab to the airport.

The following morning saw Cherry out with Robbie - she wanted to explore the countryside, while Hilda and Nell were at home, making a start on wrapping up Christmas presents. Partway through the morning there was a telephone call that Hilda answered, after some time she came off the phone with a smile,

“That was the department store,” she said, “they can deliver in time, and they guarantee that the machine will do what we want it to!”

Nell grinned, “Excellent!”

A short time later the phone rang again, Nell answered it this time, a short conversation then she replaced the receiver, “That was the Hospital, Cornelia has asked if we’ll go and see her.”

About an hour later saw Hilda and Nell moving swiftly down the corridors toward ITU. They arrived and explained why they were there, the Sister showed them into a room. The old woman lying on the bed looked extremely unwell, regardless of the oxygen mask she wore, her colour was terrible, a pale bluish tinge to her lips and fingernails, while her face and hands were cold and white. She was also suffering some pain, as was evidenced by the grimaces that flickered across her face every few minutes. When she looked across at her visitors, however, a very slight smile showed on her lips.

“Thank you for coming,” she said very quietly, “I wasn’t sure that you would.”

“We do not feel very happy at some of your actions, Cornelia, but we would never refuse a request.” Hilda said solemnly.

Cornelia nodded, she moved her head slightly to indicate a sparse man sat beside her, “Edward Paton,” she said, “from my law firm.” The man inclined his head and went back to reading through some papers.

“How are you, Cornelia?” Nell asked gruffly.

The old woman looked across at the two sat by her side, “I’m dying, Nell,” she said quickly, “you’ll forgive the informality, but now that I’ve finally realised that is the case, it didn’t seem worthwhile calling you by names I learnt so long ago.”

She stopped as the lawyer placed a sheaf of paper in front of her, she slowly read through the papers and then nodded, “Get a couple of the nurses or doctors in here,” she ordered. The man nodded and disappeared.

“Is there something we can do to help?” Hilda asked.

Cornelia shook her head, “No, I need two people to witness my signature…” she looked across at the two women, “but not you two.”

There was silence for some time, the lawyer returned with a nurse and a member of the domestic staff, they both watched as the old woman signed near the bottom of a page and then placed their signatures beneath it. Once this was complete the man left along with the two witnesses. Cornelia turned back to the two somewhat puzzled women,

“Has Madge spoken to you since Saturday?”

They both shook their heads.

“I thought that she might, no matter. I gave her a way the company could be saved, I would relinquish all control over RCS Industries, if she did just one thing. Expel Evadne Van Alden.”

Both women started, “No, Cornelia, that will not happen.” Hilda Annersley said firmly.

Nell continued angrily, “Have you really forgotten us so much, Corney? That you’d think we would accept that?”

Cornelia Flower smiled, “Yes, I believe that I had, for a time.” She stopped for a few minutes, her gaze on the ceiling, when she spoke again it was barely above a whisper, “What can you tell me about a child called Kelly Stevens?”

Hilda and Nell looked at each other in puzzlement, Hilda spoke first, “She is a pupil at the School, fourteen years old, she will be in the Lower Fifth next term. Why do you want to know?”

“She visited me on Saturday, was searching for some nurse or other, stayed to chat to me,” Cornelia looked across at Nell, “she apparently owes her life to you, Nell.”

“She was hurt in an explosion in the Chemistry lab,” Nell said quickly, a slight flush on her face, “I just dragged her out, that’s all.”

“You did far more than that,” Hilda said firmly, “Nell risked her own life to rescue Kelly.”

Cornelia nodded, “I had my people make some enquiries,” she said, “You had an eventful time during that term.” She paused for a moment before continuing, “This woman, Janet, she is safe now?”

“She’s locked up in this country’s equivalent of Broadmoor, yes.” Hilda said quickly, “Why?”

“Kelly’s opinion of her was….interesting. She said that anyone that held on to old grudges and with people that had nothing to do with it ……were just nuts.” The old woman looked across at the two women, “Something that I believe you and Madge and everyone else has been trying to get me to see. But hearing it from a total innocent, from someone so absolutely a product of her time, the 1990’s, and someone who had no idea who I was, or what I represented. She struck a chord.” The woman paused as a spasm of pain flashed across her face, she clutched at her chest slightly, after a few seconds she continued, “On my death, when the consortium was disbanded, all the different companies that owned RCS shares would have become part owners of RCS Industries. That is no longer the case. My lawyers have spent the last 36 hours buying the shares from each company. Instead of owning the shares through the companies, I now own them outright.”

Hilda and Nell looked at each other, somewhat perplexed expressions on their faces.

Cornelia continued, “The document you just saw me sign, it was a new Will, I am of sound mind, it is perfectly legal. On my death, the RCS shares will be distributed as follows, five percent each to Hilda Annersley, Nell Wilson, Daisy Venables, six percent to be released back into the public domain, and ten percent to Kelly Stevens, to be administered by you two until she is legally an adult.”

Cornelia sank back on her pillows, exhausted, she swallowed slightly, then continued, “It took hearing it from a child, and reliving some old memories, memories I thought had been forgotten, for it to suddenly get through to me that what you had been saying was true. Blaming you and the School for what happened to me was wrong. I enjoyed that girl’s company, I would like to see her again, she managed to succeed where all of you failed.”

Wonderful what someone (Kelly) coming completely new to a situation can accomplish - but also, thank goodness that Cornelia *is* big enough to change on this issue. I hope that there will be time for her to see Kelly again - I may be wrong, but I suspect Cornelia may have hours, rather than days, away from death, particularly since she has now re-made her Will and it's duly signed and witnessed. Thank you, Lesley!

Those who asked for Corney to sign her Will -she did - in the last post, it's why she got two in to witness her signature.

“I-I’m sure that can be arranged, Cornelia,” Hilda said gently, “Kelly is staying at the School with her father, at least until Christmas.”

Cornelia nodded slightly, then the Head continued, “Forgive me, Cornelia, but the information you have given us, does that mean that your takeover will be reversed?”

“Yes,” Cornelia whispered, “Technically, as the takeover had already occurred, it was not possible. But you would be surprised at how many things thought not to be possible, will suddenly change to possible with enough money. It is as though the takeover never happened. Madge Russell should be getting notification of the same at this minute.”

“Thank you Cornelia,” Nell said quietly, “it’s good of you to give Daisy and Kelly shares, but you don’t have to give more to Hilda or myself you know. We already have shares, and we’re permanent Directors on the Board.”

Cornelia looked across at Nell, “The shares have been willed to you for a reason,” she said firmly, “Madge Russell is a very good businesswoman, she reminds me of myself thirty or more years ago. But I know what business can do, especially if you are successful. At the moment Madge has honesty, integrity, If at any time in the future she looks to be losing them, I’m relying on the pair of you to put her straight. The extra five percent of shares each of you have will ensure she has to listen to you.”

The old woman visibly wilted in front of their eyes, “I must rest, come back this afternoon, please, I would welcome the chance to talk.”

“We’ll be back, Cornelia,” Hilda said quickly, the two rose and left the room.

That afternoon the two returned, and brought Kelly Stevens with them, they had taken the time to go across and speak to both Kelly’s father and Rosalind Moore about what had happened. The discussion took place in Rosalind’s room - Kelly was out with Ruth Derwent, the pair had given notice that they would be Christmas shopping in Melbourne and didn’t need either Geoff or Rosalind’s help!

After hearing Hilda and Nell’s condensed version of what had happened there was silence for a time, then Geoff stirred, “So this woman is the one responsible for the takeover bid? But because of something my Kelly said, she’s changed her mind?”

Hilda nodded, “Basically yes. Kelly said only the same as the rest of us have been saying for the past week or so, but Cornelia wasn’t listening.”

“It took someone with absolutely no idea of who Cornelia was, no idea of the ramifications, to suddenly get through to her. And Cornelia has asked if Kelly can visit her again.”

Geoff sat, deep in thought for a time, “She mentioned it to me, you know? Said that she’d chatted to an old woman in ITU, called her cool. Said she understood what it was like to have a Science teacher who could tear strips off of you! Never realised they meant the same person.” He looked across at Nell Wilson as he said this, Rosalind and Hilda did the same. Despite herself Nell found herself going very slightly pink!

“Hey, this is unfair, you know!” she protested.

Hilda leant forward, “Geoff, will you allow Kelly to see Cornelia again? She will not discover anything about our previous life, I think that is best kept to the adults if possible, but Cornelia did request that Kelly come to see her.”

“And it’s a dying request, isn’t it Hilda?” Rosalind asked quietly.

Hilda nodded, “Yes it is,” she turned back to the man, “will that be a problem?”

Geoff shook himself slightly, “That she is dying? No, I’ve never shielded Kelly from the fact that people die, she will have curiosity but no terror.” He took a deep breath, “Alright, she may visit, she’s already asked me if she could go back. She and Ruth are due back from the shops about two this afternoon, I’ll bring her across.”

That afternoon Hilda and Nell took Kelly into the hospital and along to ITU. The old woman looked, if anything, even worse than that morning, but she brightened on seeing the girl. After an initial shy start, Kelly was chatting away to the woman, telling her of some of the exploits of the Middles. Indeed, Hilda and Nell were asked to wait outside at one point, Kelly unable to repeat some of the tales when the Head and Deputy Head were sitting beside her!

Outside, Hilda and Nell stood next to a large window with a view onto the hospital gardens, “She seems worse, this afternoon,” Nell remarked.

“Yes, well she told us herself she was dying. I’m just pleased something got through to her.”

“Do you think all her ideas have changed?”

Hilda looked across at her friend, “You mean about Evvy? I don’t know.”

At that moment they were joined by Madge Russell and Joey Maynard, they quickly brought each other up to date.

“Well she’s done it,” Madge confirmed, “I received official notification just after midday, the projected takeover has been abandoned. The Stock Exchange confirmed that RCS Industries was ours once more. We came over to thank Cornelia.”

“And find out why she’d changed her mind,” Joey put in, “must admit, having one of the current pupils chat to her wasn’t something that would have occurred to me.”

“We were just discussing the possibility of Cornelia seeing Evvy,” Hilda said, “that is, if there is time for her to get back from Manly,”

“Oh she’s not gone to Manly yet,” Madge said quickly, “she, Con and Janetta are staying with me, their flight to Manly leaves tomorrow.”

Just caught up with pages of this and thrilled at twists, turns and outcome in particular. Hope Corney and Evvy can be reconciled before the end which sounds imminent - altho Evvy may resent school for keeping her mother's return from her. Looking forward to a great Christmas, tinged with sadness as I reckon Corney isn't going to see it.
