I dont know where this inspiration came from, its not like anything i have tried to write before but here it is... well the start anyways..

Vi Lucy, stood in the shadow of the mountain, in a useless attempt to escape the searing afternoon sun.

Her short hair, roughly hacked off, stood in messy spikes, which did not fully reach halfway to her shoulders.

Her skin was deeply tanned, and parts of her face were red to from the glaring sun.

She wore a pair of old overalls, stained and creased, and faded.

Her eyes, once sparkling, were now dull.

She moved slightly, entering into a crude shelter. It was dark inside, except for some patchs of light which had wormed their way through the leafy roof.

She looked to the only solid wall. The one made from the cold mountain rock. Wearily, she took her knife out and made another scratch in the wall.

One, for every day they had been here.

She closed her eyes briefly, in an effort to take away the pain, but the rustle of leaves nearby made her eyes bolt open, and she took a defensive stance as she squinted out into the green beyond.

She relaxed slightly as she saw who it was.

"Con" she said quietly.

Con continued to walk slowly towards her.

She was an impressive sight to see.

Her thick black hair tumbled loose to her waist, and her skin was as pale as it had always been.

She was tall and thin, and exquisitely beautiful.

Her eyes were black pools, and they bore the same haunted look that they had borne since that terrible night.

Vi flinched despite herself, as the memories rose from the dark vaults where she hid them carefully.

Con wore a pair of small, crudely stitched shorts, and a baggy, once white, mans shirt.

Her bare legs and feet, bore angry red scratches and scars, living proof of their ongoing battle to survive.

Con reached the shelter, and opened her mouth to speak.

Vi found herself feeling the same rush of foreboding as she had felt on the night that Lumos had arrived.

Con said only four words, but they were enough to drain Vi.

"She is coming back."

Vi looked at Con with fear in her eyes, but Con wore that same air of calm she had worn ever since... ever since...

Con Maynard sat numbly in front of the crackling fire as though in a dream, for surely it must be a dream, she thought, as she felt the sand running through her bare toes.

The sun was starting to fade now, and as she looked around she saw the others sitting looking as dazed as she felt.

Mary-Lou sat in the shade of a tree, slightly away from the fire and the circle of scared girls around it.

She watched the leaping flames with rapt attention, as she thought how best to deal with this situation.

The silence, which had previously only been broken by the crackling fire was now ended, by a shrill crying.

Mary-lou looked on bemused, as the horrified girls stared at the ragged creature who had emerged from the dense forest.

It took a moment for it to sink in that this dirty thing, was in fact a small boy.

It was fair-haired Margot who ran towards him first.

"Margot" called Mary-lou, her clarion tones making it unnecessary for her to move.

Margot hesitated for a moment before continuing to move towards the boy.

"Bring him over here please" called Mary-lou sweetly, in her most prefect-like tones.

Margot, meek for once, took the wailing boy's unresisting hand and led him over to Mary-lou.

"Now calm down, and stop wailing" said Mary-lou sensibly.

"Mummy" wailed the boy, not listening.

Several of the younger girls exchanged glances, remembering that they too were alone here.

"You're mummy is fine, and you'll see her again soon" said Mary-lou, still using that matter of fact tone.

"Mummy and Daddy were on the boat" said the boy.

A deadly silence greeted this statement, and the girls looked at each other horrified.

Sitting beside Con, Len gulped.

Con gripped her hand tightly, as she looked round and saw terrible looks on the others faces.

As the flames danced madly she thought of the other people. The people who had been on the boat with them. The people who were not here now.

She looked out to the sea, and prayed hopelessly that they were all right.

Con stood, her hair billowing loose about her, at the top of the cliff. It was the third day she had stood there, keeping a vigil on the stormy sea and the rocks below.

Len and Margot watched from a distance unsure how to approach their sister.

Watching her, standing there silent and unmoving, with the wind whirling about her, Len felt the gnawing pain of what they had left.

Margot tugged impatiently on her arm.

"We have to get her back" she pointed out.

"Can't we leave her here?" Len whispered back, her eyes watering, as she watched her sister mourn what they were all trying to forget.

"No" stated Margot, and Len knew she was correct. Mary-lou... well Mary-lou was very particular... Len stopped herself, Mary-lou had always looked out for them before, she just had to be strict now to look after them properly.

Nudged on by her triplet, Len edged towards Con.

Con did not acknowledge her presence, continuing to stare desolately out at the endless water.

She did not move but eventually she spoke.

The wind whipped her quiet words away and Len barely heard them.

"I know they are alive. I can feel them." she shuddered slightly

Len spoke with an assurance she did not feel.

"Of course they are all right. They've just already been rescued thats all."

Con turned to her coldly.

"I'm not a child Helena"

I know, thought Len, as she looked at this new, mature Con who she could not reach.

"Con, come back and help us with the shelters, or gathering wood" pleaded Len desperately.

Con ignored her.

Margot joined them now, and the three stood, the wind blowing mercilessly about them, with the cruel sea snarling below, and an invisible wall sprung up between them.

Len watched her sisters helplessly, insecure in the knowledge that she could be of no help here and that she could not look after them.

Con continued to ignore them, she was changed here, different, she knew deep down that there were others, and she just had to listen hard enough and she would find them.

Margot too, turned to the sea, and a sense of foreboding overwhelmed her. She felt their slow and painful demise, each one excruciating and different, and she felt the torture and the hurt, and she felt... she felt herself standing over them. Watching. but not helping to save them.

She let out a slow gasp as though she had been holding her breath, and collapsed onto her knees, She tried to raise herself but her wobbling hands would not stop shaking, she lifted them up in front of her face and stared at them, still feeling the warm, shining blood.

This is back to the present again btw...

Vi threw her knife into the ground viciously.

She glowered up at the mountain top and asked why this had to happen again.

she pulled her knife out of the mud and wiped it unceremoniously on the her overalls.

She brushed away the hot angry tears beginning to form, with the back of her hand. There was no place for tears here.

She leaned against the cool, grey mountain side for a moment, allowing all emotion to drain away.

She stood up tall and pushed her shoulders back. She turned right, and battled her way past the creepers and vines, down a worn path on the mossy surface.

She came out eventually, not into the bright sunlight, but onto the cold, barren cliffs.

She stood silent for a moment before approaching Cons silent figure.

the light seemed to shine through Con illuminating her.

Con turned to her eventually, dragging her eyes away from the sea.

"How close are they?" asked Vi bluntly.

"I feel them again" said Con slowly, she turned again so she was once more facing the crashing waves.

"It's getting stronger" She stopped again, but a look of hesitation had crept into her face.

"What is it Con?" asked Vi quickly, though she had learnt to wait for Con, who never spoke unless she had to.

Con opened her mouth, still hesitant, Vi could see she was choosing her words carefully.

"What is it Con?" asked Vi again, more viciously now.

"I... I think i felt Lumos."

Whatever she had been expecting it had not been that.

Vi clutched her hand to her heart for a moment, but Con was speaking again

"It was very faint, and i could have been wrong but..."

But Con was never wrong about these things.

For the first time Vi felt the tiniest ray of hope, it started deep in her, like a burning flame, melting the icy walls she had built up inside her.

"Vi." and Con turned troubled eyes on her.

"Its the island" said Vi, not willing to let the hope burn out, and using the same explanation Con had always given her.

"No" said Con slowly, "Its too big. I must be wrong.I...I... should never have told you." she muttered, unable to look into her friends hurt eyes.

Vi felt an intense pain, as the moment of hope was snuffed out, and then the cold numbness came back.

"It's ok" she stammered.

She turned away, and was ashamed to feel the tears coming back.

She walked away, not caring where her feet took her, yet she was not surprised when she found herself in the little hollow in the forest, where white flowers bloomed, as though there was a sheet of snow over the area.

Her eyes fell on the two patches of darkness, where the earth was damp and fresh despite not being moved since almost six months ago.

Twin graves, she thought.

Placed together in an effort to bring peace, and stop the massacre.

She knelt by Lumos' grave, and wept openly for the death of innocence.

She had at least took comfort that their deaths had brought peace, but that no longer seemed to be the truth.

Cons haunting words of earlier came back to her.

"she is coming back"

this is definetly the last update before the weekend. Sorry if ths is too confusing...

some more

Vi Lucy watched Her ex-Head girl with a mixed expression. She turned to the thick, wild greenery which sprung up at the end of the beach, with longing.

She looked at the gaggle of girls hauling the wood from the edges of the forests, and made a snap decision.

Turning her back on the warmth and comfort of the beach she leapt into the forest. She leant against a tree once inside and breathed deeply, she peered back, and was relieved to see that no one had noticed her disappearance.

She wondered briefly why she cared about Mary-lou knowing her every move, but decided against such grave thought and turned to the green curtains around her in delight.

It was so beautifully wild, and for a moment she felt herself breathing in time to the racing life of the greenery, before she was shook herself back into reality.

There was some flowers amongst the mossy floor, and they bloomed a brilliant blue. they seemed to be winding a precarious path through the fallen tree trunks and long grass and mossy boulders.

She felt so at home here, and so relaxed for the first time, that she did not worry about straying away from what she knew, or the fact that the forest was getting denser and darker, and starting to close in on her.

It was only when she felt herself straining her eyes to see that she realised she was truly lost, in the dark, and suddenly evil forest.

She went to turn back but it was all the same, one green tree looked very much like every other green tree. Even her trail of flowers seemed to have disappeared.

She would have to stay here till it got light again, there was no point in getting even more lost.

Vi, thought wryly about what Mary-lou would have to say about her staggering onto the beach in the morning, but she realised with a start that she didnt care. She didnt want to worry anyone, but Mary-lous vicious tongue was not going to threaten her.

She sat down in the mossy, undergrowth and was surprised at how calm she was. Somehow, the beach, with its roaring fire, and swarms of people, and its attempt at order, were much less comforting than being with wild, untameable, nature itself.

Vi was just settling down to sleep, when she saw the shadows start to move. She stirred uneasily, and then jumped up, opening her mouth to release a shrill cry, as she saw a pair of eyes staring at her unblinkingly.

The eyes blinked, and Vi closed her mouth sheepishly. She leaned up against the tree trunk, backed into a corner, and breathing deeply.

Vi's heart started to pump faster as she saw the sharpened stick, the person held in their hand.

The person moved forward, and Vi saw him clearer, the beautiful dark skin, the straggling black hair, the broad, bare shoulders, the lack of almost any clothing, and the air of peace about him.

Vi opened her mouth again, hesitantly, not sure what to say, but she was drawn to this man, as though he was a magnet to her. He meant safety, she realised that. And he was good. Vi had known that as soon as those eyes had blinked at her.

those eyes... unscarred by the world, and the violence mankind was capable of. Those innocent eyes.

They stood like that for some time, his dark eyes staring into her violet ones. Her beauty and his innocence.

Finally, when the air became to hot to breathe, vi whispered "Vi"

He looked at her as if imprinting her on his memory.

"Lumos" he said finally.

Lumos.

The word whirled around in her head as if it were a firework repeatedly bouncing off her brain.

"ok" she croaked, breaking their gaze, confused.

He held out his hand, dropping the stick he was holding. Vi heard it clatter lightly on the ground.

Surprised at herself, she put her own small hand in his.

As they touched, Vi felt her heart swell.

Suddenly the dark shadows were no longer there, and they were in light again.

he hesitated for a moment, then picked up the spear.

he led her away, with an assurance that Vi realised must have been born of a lifetimes experience wandering these paths.

She noticed how silent he was, camoflaged by the forest around him.

Once again, she felt that queer sensation of breathing as one, with nature.

This time she didnt fight it, though.

Lumos turned round to her with a smile, and nodded slightly.

Just as she was starting to feel that her feet would carry her no further Lumos stopped.

He pulled back a tangle of creepers, and Vi stood, looking in amazement at a large flat clearing.

It was clearly man-made.

Lumos stepped out, and beckoned her to follow him.

Suddenly scared, Vi gripped his hand tightly. But she followed him.

He drew her into the middle of this place, where the grass did not grow wild, and where the stars stared down blinking at them.

She looked at him, at first with fear, but then with trust.

"Why?" he asked her.

She looked at him, surprised that he had spoken, and surprised she understood what he said.

But she did not need to ask what he meant.

For she saw in his eyes that complete trust, that complete naivety, that she could never hope to have, born in a century full of violence, where the true brutality of man had been realised.

"I feel scared sometimes" she said slowly.

He continued to look at her.

"Not just of nature" admitted Vi, though she had not realised it till now, "but of us, sometimes."

Lumos looked at her, then he said the most beautiful words Vi had ever heard.

"But we are good."

"Yes we are" said Vi, but an image of hitler, came to her mind, the countless brothers, and cousins and uncles who had served in the armed forces, and then finally, disturbingly, an image of Mary-lou, ordering the girls round the camp fire, and dragging Con away from the cliffs back down to the beach.

"Yes we are good" she said, but she was crying.

Another wee bit...

Vi felt the hairs on the back of her neck rise, and she realised she was being watched.

She turned around slowly, dreadingly.

She saw the dark chocolatey skin, and the naked form.

"Tilly" she said quietly.

"I've been waiting for you" said Tilly, her voice emotionless.

"Why?" said Vi, suddenly ashamed of the tears and the emotions she was allowing herself to show.

"Haven't you felt it?" she asked surprised.

Vi looked up, shocked at Tillys unheard of show of emotion.

"Perhaps i was wrong." muttered Tilly.

"Tilly what is it?" asked vi desperately.

"No. You are the worng person."

Vi looked at Tilly uncomprehendingly. Tilly looked confused, and this was the first time Vi had seen Tilly since... since...

Tilly turned to go.

Vi watched her retreating into the undergrowth.

"Is it about Lumos?" she called out.

In the distance she saw Tilly stop.

"Is he back?" she asked the forest, half fearfully, half hopefully.

Tilly walked back to her. she walked straight up to her until they were standing nose to nose, right on the tip of Lumos' grave.

"No." she said shortly.

Then she asked the question. The question Vi realised she had been burning to ask.

"What would you be willing to do to get him back?"

"Mary-lou" said Len timidly

"Yes" said Mary-lou distractedly.

"Umm.. con..."

"Len. Have you seen Vi?" interrupted Mary-lou

"No.."

"Now Len, you know you can trust me right?" said Mary-lou, gazing at Len steadily.

"Yes" said Len before dropping her eyes.

"Now there has been something not quite right wth Vi since we got here. Dont you agree?"

"Erm..." said Len confusedly.

"Don't you agree?" repeated Mary-lou, in steely tones.

"Yes Mary-lou" said Len meekly.

"I want you to stay away from her, do you understand?" then in softer tones, " I need you to help me Len, you are like me. You only want to help others, dont you? So you have to listen to me. I dont want... I dont want any one to get the wrong ideas. I want this camp to remain united. So we must all stand together, and remain together. Against anyone who opposes."

Len nodded. Mary-lou was always right. She had always looked after them. Len tried as hard as possible to remember the Mary-lou that had helped them, who had helped Margot so much. Yet for some reason that vision of Mary-lou was slipping away, and Len didn't no why.

"And Len.." said Mary-lou

Len shut her eyes momentarily. She knew what was coming next.

"You know who else is a threat to this camp. To our one hope of remaining free and civilised.."

Con.

Len squeezed her hands together, her nails digging into her palms.

Her sister.

"Con" said Mary-lou quietly.

Her triplet.

"But.. Mary-lou shes my family." said Len, unable to stay quiet.

"So am i? amn't i? Aunt Joey always says i'm like another of her daughters."

Len nodded slowly.

Mary-lou was family.

"She has always been different. You know she has Len." Mary-lou's voice was deathly serious now.

Unwillingly Len nodded. Con was different, dreamy. But she was her sister. She was good.

"Shes strange. Standing up on those cliffs by herself. She doesn't want to help us Len. She doesn't want to be with us. She doesn't want to be with you."

Len twitched.

"You know she wont bring good here Len. You know it."

Len realised her hands were shaking uncontrollably.

"Stay away from her Len. She's not one of us."

A double post today.. because im feeling generous, and if im being honest i think the first half of the post would be too confusing on its own...

Con stood at the edge of the cliffs, as she had done every day since she came here.

The waves crashing below relaxed her.

Their untamed, wild nature, somehow beat in time to her own heart.

She felt the gnawing in her gut as she saw the pain she had caused Vi.

Yet was Lumos truly good? Afterall he had...

Con couldnt bring herself to think it.

For it had been her fault really. She had wept tears of ice after, freezing time in her grief.

Long enough to mourn, but not to forget.

She could never forget that still face...

She hadnt visited the grave. She couldn't.

Suddenly, in the midst of the darkness that was growing about her Con finally felt it.

The signal she had been waiting for ever since they had been brought to this island.

she cried then. Warm salty tears rolled down her cheeks.

Con felt the old, now unfamiliar, start of a smile forming.

She raised her arms to the sky and whispered, "Thank you"

"Con" whispered Len urgently, looking around herself worriedly.

Con remained still, only her hair blowing loose in the wind.

"Con you have to leave."

"Len" said Con patiently and gently, "I have to stay here."

"But Mary-lou.."

Con smiled slightly.

"Mary-lou is only an old prefect, she doesnt even have authority over us anymore."

"You dont understand Con. She.. she is powerful."

"only because you let her manipulate you." said Con, still in those same soft, placating tones.

Lens voice rose to a wail, "Con listen to me! Look at me! Why have you changed so much? Why?"

Con finally turned to her triplet. Their eyes met briefly, and Len lowered her head.

"Roger?" she mumbled.

Con turned away again, and looked back out over the stormy sea.

"i can't believe he has gone" and for the first time her voice wobbled slightly.

Len opened her mouth and then closed it again.

"I know he is out there" stated Con.

Len looked at her triplet, trying to understand what was burning deep inside of her.

Eventually, and unable to look into her eyes, Len started to mutter, "Maybe... you should accept..."

"That he is dead?" asked Con bluntly.

Mutely, Len nodded.

"No" said Con stubbornly. "No".

"Con you should go. I know something bad is going to happen" and with that Len turned away, and started walking, and then running back down towards the beach, and the merrily dancing fire.

Con, uncautious for once, did a little dance of joy.

That rare show of emotion, betrayed the warmth which was suddenly flooding her, washing away the death, and betrayal, and returning the love and kindness which had formed her before.

She looked less gaunt somehow, with the slightest spring in her step, uncaring for the potential danger she usually remembered was around her.

She entered the forest, for the first time aware of the gaily singing birds, and the bright carpet of flowers.

The sun shone down, radiating around her.

Then she stopped, suddenly completely still.

Everything was silent, no birds, no leaves rustling, no sea crashing.

Con was alone, the silence threatening to engulf her.

She jerked herself back to reality, and breathing heavily she readied herself, with her knife in hand.

High above her, on the top of a snow covered mountain, a boy watched over her, powerless to save her, yet condemmned to watch what was coming next.

Con cried once Len had gone. She would not have done it had she thought anyone could see, but she felt safe enough in her solitude to show her bitter emotions.

The pride that had slowly built up around her, and the feelings that had started surging through her, so deep and so much an integral part of her, had forced a rift between her and the rest of her world.

To know deep down that she was different was horrible enough, but to see the scared look in Lens eyes, the apprehension, from the person who was supposed to be closest to her... It had broken down all her reserves.

For the first time deep in her own self pity,Con lost her vigilance, lost her passion for her surroundings, and her air of vigilance.

She never saw them coming.

She never had a chance, she was trussed up, and as quickly and as silently as they had arrived, they were gone.

In the new emptiness of the cliffs, the only viewers of the small raft smashing in to the rocks below, were the night time insects... and one very angry girl.

Back to the present...

Con, her body tense, tried to remain alert, yet the vision was overpowering, trails of it whispered and settled in her brain, the tendrils of a dream taking hold of reality, until she was unable to differentiate between what was happening, and what was going to happen.

But one thing overshadowed all that she could see. The mountain. She saw the snow, the ice, the faces, she felt the stormy sea and she felt them dashed against the rocks.

She came back to the present then, but she knew no one could have survived that. She had seen his life cruelly taken. She had mistaken his prescence and the world was upside down again.

She would not think of it.

Yet the waves crashing and the sound of splintering wood would not leave her ears.

She looked up at the mountain, with the deference she somehow knew it deserved.

Then she spat.

She glared at it, as if she had some sudden insight into it, as if the mountain was the source of all her problems.

She stripped. Her creamy body, framed by her wild jet black hair.

Her eyes as cold and dead as two stones, were suddenly alive with fury.

"take me" she shrieked, "Just take me, kill me, torture me, you can't hurt me anymore!"

She spread her arms out wide.

"TAKE ME! TAKE ME! Take me" her shrill shouts turning to sobs. She sounded weak and beaten.

Uncaring of her lack of composure, or of the danger she was leaving herself in, she collapsed noisily sobbing.

Thanks for the comments, they are always appreciated!

But what has reduced them to this? I'm confused and wibbling all at the same time!

She was always right. The girls needed her. They could not survive without her. What would they have done? Become savages? No, they were too weak even for that.

Mary-lou sighed, she carried the weight of an entire world here, where everyone deferred to her, and she solved all their problems.

She tried to pretend she did not relish this, and only took it on as her duty.
She frowned as she came back to the camp. They were no longer alone. She knew that now, and they had taken one of her charges.

Although Con was no loss.

She arrived at the camp, but there was an air of unease about it now.

Vi was back she noticed. She was unsettled, changed.

Vi was going to try and overthrow her she knew it.

There was division in the camp, she could smell it.

She saw Margot, and briefly looked into her eyes. She was momentarily terrifed by what she saw. But the wheels were working inside her head. This Margot would be a valuable ally.

Then she saw Len, one of her faithful juniors. But this was not the Len that she had left. Sadly she realised that len was too blinded by her beliefs, that she could not see that she, Mary-lou, was right, and that she was only doing what was best for them.

Suddenly she smiled, as a wisp of a plan entered her mind, a cruel smile, they would love her again when they saw what a great leader she was, when she saved Con.

Perhaps though, unfortunately, Con would not survive the battle they fought to get her back.

That would be awfully sad.

Mary-lou almost felt remorseful that despite her best efforts Con was accidentally going to die.

That's one very scary Mary-Lou there. I hope Con doesn't get killed. Thanks Brie.

Despite? Or because of?

I'm finally updating this... Sorry for the long wait. Please comment :)

Con was released onto green grass in what appeared to be a large clearing. It was hard to tell in the dark.

There were many people surrounding her, with dark skin and for the most part nude.

The largest man stepped forward. "Leo" he announced in a deep rumbling roar.

"Con" replied she calmly. She was not scared of these people.

A young girl burst forward.

"She is a seer" she commented, staring at her hard.

"Yes" replied Leo.

A seer. It did not surprise her really. But that must mean that these people were like her yet they were so different... but if they understood her?

"You are innocent" she said.

"We have not suffered from the mighty seas for many years." roared Leo proudly.

"There are worse things than the sea."

They stared at her uncomprehendingly.

"Is she seeing?" asked the young girl.

"Hush Tilly" said Leo roughly, as he stared at Con.

"what do you see?" he asked.

She almost smiled.

"It is what I do not see that surprises me" she said.

The looked at her silently. She realised that they believed her words implicitly.

"You have seen no evil." She shook her head as Leo started to speak. "No you have seen no evil in human form."

It hurt her to crush that innocence out of their eys, but something told her it was of great importance to do so.

"There are some who believe they are as mighty as the sea, and they live to inflict power over others."

They stared at her with large eyes.

"Some humans are capable of causing death to others."

"I don't believe." said Tilly defiantly.

"Hush young one." said Leo firmly. "Lumos please..."

Another young man appeared, and the area seemed to brighten as he did so.

"Be quiet please Tilly" he said in a low voice.

Tilly shut her mouth with a frown.

"Vi said this also" he said to the others.

Con looked up, how did he know Vi? She had an inkling, but she hoped not...

Leo turned to her again.

"How does this affect us?" he growled.

Con raised her eyes trying valiantly to keep eye contact as she spoke.

"One of you will be slain" she murmered.

Tilly interupted again "Look" she shouted pointing in the direction of the beach. The forest was aflame.
