Part One
~Vikki~

Thank you everyone Embarassed *Bowled over by Liz's shouts* Wink You would have had this bit last night, but work was evil so you get it tonight instead - aren't you lucky?! Wink Twisted Evil

Jeanne opened the dormitory door, and saw before her the small group of prefects kneeling together in prayer. Not wishing to intrude, she stepped silently to one side and unnoticed by them all, stood noiselessly with her head bowed her thoughts acutely aware of her beloved friend whom was lying so close to Death’s Gates.

****

“Hilda! Hilda?” Her eyes flicked open, but no sign of recognition showed in them.

****

As Candy finished the last prayer, and the girls collected their thoughts, Jeanne stepped forward. Marie noticed her first, and gave a slight gasp, shocked that they had not noticed her before. “Mademoiselle!”

“Oui, Marie. I have come to tell you what we know of cher Hilda.” In her distress, Jeanne didn’t notice her slip. Jack raised her eyes fearfully, dreading the worst, searching Jeanne’s tear soft eyes.

****

Hilda lay quietly her eyes so briefly opened, flickered once more and closed.

Oh! This is such a brilliant story, Kat! I can't stop singing its praises! (and weeping quietly at short intervals when ever I read it- which is not that rarely.:crying: *sob sob at the thought of the story*) I keep coming back to read it all over again, plus the tiny bit which has been added on- it never seems enough- Waaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!:crying: ) Thank you soooooooooooooooooo much Kat, for an absolutely brill drabble! 'S the best one I've read in aeons (did I spell that right?) *Ditto's Nell's poke ing of RL and sending of hugs to Kat*

#32:  Author: KatLocation: Swansea PostPosted: Sun Dec 19, 2004 7:25 pm

*blushes wildly at Annie's praises* Thank you Annie, I feel well rewarded now Kiss Unfortunately there is no more of this yet - this is the first time I've been online since I last posted (major withdrawal symptoms! HELP!). Things are very manic in my life at the moment, and working on customer services each day in Argos is hell. We had the police called yesterday because I was threatened so badly by a customer, which should give you a small glimpse into my working day/life at the moment. I collapsed in work last week due to exhaustion also, so they now have me doing 12hr shifts each day under the impression that this is easing my work load. Again, HELP! It's very stressful there and I'm suffering daily/continuous migraines which makes concentration incredibly hard. I don't have time to go into all the rest that is going on, but I thought I'd let you know about the one shining light on my christmas tree, and that is that..... I have a lovely other half now! Very Happy We work together so brief moments of happiness fleck each day as we sneak round the stock room on our break together... *looks super angelic* Anyway, I am disappearing again now, wish I had time to catch up on all the drabbles, but I think I'd need about 2 weeks off work with solid 24/7 reading to do that! Hope your Christmases go as well as you would like them to, hugs to you all, Kat xxx

Is I under the impression you be wanting more lassies? Aye? Alrighty then! Thank you to Gemmikins and Vikkikins for proofing for me Kiss

Tears welling, Jeanne took a moment to steady herself, gently wiping her eyes with a trembling finger. “Miss Annersley is alive still, but she lies close to God’s Gate. She is deeply unconscious; the doctors will tell us no more until they have observed her for the night.” Jeanne’s voice was low, and vibrated with the intense emotions she was struggling to control.
Jack stood, a determined look upon her face. “Mddle, Miss Annersley WILL get better. She must do, she is what we all strive to be, she is our representation of all that we believe in…” Here Jack paused, remembering times when the Head had impressed on her the need to be an upright member of society, how playing the game by yourself and by others made for a better world and a happier life. Wanda raised a tearful face to the group, but no words escaped her lips, only tears from her beautiful eyes.
There was no need for further words, each knew what the other was thinking and hoping in her deepest heart. They stood silently together for several minutes before Mddle stirred herself and made the quiet suggestion of bed.

“But Mddle, how can we possibly…”
“Shh, my child, you must sleep. We will need you tomorrow, as will Hilda,” again the slip, again not noticed. “Rest now, for tomorrow will be a long and weary day. Bonne nuit mes enfants, Garde de Dieu vous.”

“Bonne nuit Mddle.”

Jeanne left as silently as she had come, leaving the small group to its thoughts. Each girl turned to her cubicle and prepared herself for bed, not a murmur passing between them, each intent on her own feelings of helplessness even in the shadow of prayer.

***********

Footsteps sounding quickly in the corridor leading to the staff room, a hand rested itself on the door knob before swiftly opening the door and entering mutely.

“Nell!” Kathie Ferrars raced across the staff room floor, dodging tables and piles of marking to grasp her by the arms and draw her close for a tender kiss. “Come and sit down, do. Mary will bring you some coffee first, and then we will talk.”

Nell nodded her head, her usually upright body bent as though a heavy load rested upon her weary back. Taking the coffee from Mary and liberally adding sugar to it, she took several large gulps before setting the cup down in front of her and turning to her friends and colleagues.

“What do we know?”
“Very little Cherie,” Jeanne had returned from Jack’s dormitory and entered the room shortly after Nell, standing to one side whilst her friends had gathered supportingly around her.

“Nancy rang a short time ago, told us that Hilda is still alive but unconscious. Tony O’Kane and Frank Peters won’t say more until they have observed her for the night – or more.” It was Kathie who spoke this time, seeing that Jeanne was now visibly struggling with her emotions. A deep silence fell as she finished speaking, every member of the staff room contemplating the possible outcomes of Hilda’s illness.

The silence was rudely broken by the sudden peeling of the telephone standing in the corner of the room. Matey, who had returned from her evening out as Rosalie had relayed Nancy’s message to them all earlier, was sat closest to the ‘phone and after the initial shock of it’s ringing had gone, promptly answered it in her usual manner.

“Matron here. Who is this please?” The staff listened eagerly, but only hearing one side of the conversation did nothing to ease their eagerness for news of their Head.
“I see.”
“And…”
“Anything else?”
“Yes, thank you Nancy” The voice had softened and gentle tears sprang to her eyes as Matey returned the receiver to it’s base.

“That was Nancy Wilmot. She has been allowed in to see Hilda, but has nothing new to report.” Matey’s voice caught in her throat, and several people at once guessed why Nancy had been allowed in to see Hilda when she was so ill.

Only a dwti bit sorry sorry.

“One of the porters will bring her home shortly; there is nothing she can do for Hilda by staying there.” Matey spoke briskly, trying to cover over her feelings of deep anxiety.

“In that case, we should all go to bed,” Joan Bertram’s voice was soft, but all recognised the sense behind the gently spoken words. “I’ll wait here for Nancy; make sure she’s ok before settling down for the night.” Matey nodded her head, too overcome now to do more. A flashback threw itself sharply into her mind, Hilda lying there so cold and lifeless. She shuddered, trying to shake the memory from her mind, free herself from an image she had no wish to remember.

A little bit...

“Come along then Gwyn, bed time.”
A hand extended itself to her, and she reached out to grasp it. Hauled to her feet, she started to walk towards the door, quietly wishing those nearest her good night. Walking back through the school towards her room, Matey felt comfort in the silent companionship of Rosalind Moore whom was escorting her.
“Good night, Gwynneth.”
“Night, Rosalind.”
A gentle squeeze on her arm, then she was alone. Matey closed the door behind her, and knelt down before her window, gazing up at the stars in deep thought. Quietly she began to pray, begging her God to spare her friends life.

After a few minutes Matey turned to silent prayer, letting her mind wander through her tumultuous thoughts, knowing that He would make sense of them for her and help her find the strength she needed to see her through the next few hours, let alone days.
Climbing wearily into bed, Matey whispered quietly “Good night Hilda, God bless you.”

In a way I'm fairly impressed - once I've started a story I can't stop writing it - for some to deliberately ration the amount and take so long - I couldn't do it.

Me neither, but my problem is I get spurts. I get a whole lot done in a very short time then get stuck and don't do anything for what feels like ages. But when the bunny bites, it bites rather hard! Unlike yours, Lesley, which appears to bite viciously! Shocked

Sorry for spreeing! Here's some more...

“Come along Miss Wilmot – Karl is going to drive you home. There is nothing more you can do for Miss Annersley tonight. Rest and tomorrow, we pray, we will have good news for you.” Nancy nodded dumbly, and allowed herself to be steered away from Hilda’s bedside. Glancing back fearfully at the still form in the high, white bed, she shivered slightly, and silently prayed with all her heart that tomorrow would see Hilda recovering from, from whatever it was that was wrong with her.

Outside the room stood Karl, patiently waiting to drive Nancy home. A quick conversation between the nurse and Karl followed, of which she heard nothing, then suddenly she was getting out of the car at the school’s main entrance, and Joan Bertram was greeting her softly.
“Shh now Nancy, say nothing until you’ve had a drink and are warm,” as Nancy had started to mumble incoherently.
Karl waved his hand from the car, and set off for his own home, not looking forward to telling his dear wife of the sad news he had to bear.

Meanwhile Nancy had received a subdued greeting by those members of staff who had not yet retired to bed. Sipping slowly at her coffee, she refused anything to eat with a sharp shake of her head. Food, the very thought made her feel ill. Instead she pulled the blanket Joan had given her more tightly round her cold shoulders and quietly began to tell what she knew, realising with a sigh that she really knew very little.

She stopped after only a minute or two, having told all she could remember. A heavy silence hung in the room, unbroken save for the muted breathing of those present. They sat a moment, digesting Nancy’s chilling words, unable to fully comprehend the critical state in which their dear friend lay.

The silence was broken as first one, and then another of the staff began to shed soft tears, unable to hide their grief any longer. Nancy sat passively, emotions running too deep and too strong to allow her to cry. She stood uncertainly, and then made her way to the door, unable to cope with seeing her friends in such torment. She made her way to her room, wishing only for the relief that sleep would bring her.

Stumbling a little as walked down the staff corridor, she thought she saw a light glinting under her door.

Lol, ok then...

Meanwhile, Nell Wilson had sat in shock, listening to Nancy’s low words about her closest friend.
She couldn’t stand to be cooped up in that room any longer, and with a muttered ‘….St. Mildreds….see…tomorrow…good night” she had stalked from the room.
Once outside the chalet, a sob escaped her trembling lips, and her hands searched desperately in her pockets for a handkerchief to stem the flow of fraught tears she was now shedding unceasingly.

“Hilda, oh Hilda! My friend!” Nell continued to sob uncontrollably for some minutes, before finally overcoming herself. Tucking the sopping handkerchief back into her pocket she turned her gaze to the stars, drawing strength from their beauty, feeling the mightiness of God’s work.

Slowly she turned and made her way downwards towards Welsen. She stumbled over the uneven ground, not noticing the roots and boulders that were in the way. Gradually her eyesight became accustomed to the darkness and she no longer wished for the light of her torch, but by this time the damage had been done.

By the time Nell reached St. Mildreds, she had regained her composure, though her eyes were dark with the intensity of her feelings. However, walking over the rough ground had caused her to strain herself and now her foot was aching badly.

A little bit more...

Off at the San, some silly person had left Hilda's verandah window wide open, and no one saw the small furry brown bear creep into the room... Hilda's eyes widened in shock at the sight and her hand searched frantically for the call button.... MUNCH! CRUNCH! Too late, the nurse on duty arrived to find a bloody set of paw prints leading to the window, across the grass and into the woods.... Hiding in the trees, Xeno rubbed his bloated belly with a satisfied sigh "Mmm, tastey... that will keep me going for a short while anyway".

Thank you! Laughing And Dawn, nothing you call me will induce me to write more - in fact it'll be the opposite! Or else it'll reflect on Hilda's health and whether she survives or not... Twisted Evil Anyway, here's some more drabble!

As Nell reached the Chalet, she was completely unaware of the figure creeping up behind her. Her tears were blurring her sight, and her sobs muffled her hearing, and the footsteps coming up quickly went unnoticed. Suddenly a hand struck out like lightning and grasped her throat. "So, you thought it wise to do such a thing? A mistake you shall pay dearly for!"

"I have no idea what you mean!" gasped out Nell, "please, you must believe me!"

"Believe you? Never! I am here to seek revenge, revenge for all your wrongdoings!" With a swift turn, Pim pulled on Nell's exposed throat and... Seconds later Pim looked down at her feet in glee, "That will teach you to be sarcastic to me Miss Wilson!" she chuckled with malicious joy and disappeared into the dark night...

Maybe Gem, just maybe... Twisted Evil Wink And Pimmikins dearest, if you go into 'Received Files' you will find a folder titled with your email address - inside that folder will be another saying 'history', open this and there should be everyones email address's that you've even spoken to on msn using that computer. Double click on someones name, and you'll get the entire conversation history between you and that person(s) Twisted Evil I find it quite useful! #244:  Author: KatLocation: Swansea PostPosted: Thu Jan 20, 2005 3:27 pm

I also killed Hilda! Well, technically I didn't - Xeno did! Laughing However...

Xeno burped. He burped again. And again. "Oh Hilda! Why do you do such terrible things to my digestive system baby?" Xeno moaned, and rubbed his furry tummy. Grumbling arose from deep inside and with a great 'buuuuurrrrruuuup', Hilda shot out of Xeno's tummy and landed with a splat in the middle of the comfortably furnished cave (Xeno being unable to find suitable accommodation at the Platz's various guest houses, had had to make do with furnishing this rather shiny cave that he'd found). Hilda sat up dazed, and looked round her in confusion. Glancing down, she noticed several bits of her body were missing or else had deep bite marks in. With several more loud and smelly burps, Hilda's missing body parts were returned to her, and with the aid of some handy super glue, she was soon whole again. Rubbing her chewed body, Hilda turned to question Xeno on his atrocious behaviour. "It wasn't me! Twas Ally! She made me! It wasn't me! Twas Ally! She made me!" Xeno continued to chant this, as he slowly etched his way closer and closer to Hilda, who found she was unable to more, as her various muscles were still rather sore having been chewed quite thoroughly by Xeno's sharp little teeth. With a swift ‘thwack!’, Xeno hit Hilda across the head, and dragged her unceremoniously back to the San, where she was found minutes later by a nurse, look still grey and to all appearances…
