He is Calling to me..... Part Three

I somehow don't think that trick will work Xeno dearest - I suggest you try freshly picked Pim though - I hear it tastes quite nice! *Decides to be nice and relent* Here's a serious post!

Nell lent back against the wall of the Chalet, and closed her eyes to the world. Images flashed through her mind, times that she and Hilda had shared together. Only yesterday afternoon they’d shared coffee and cakes in Hilda’s study and argued cheerfully on the outcome of the book they were both reading…

Nell had left the study, determined that she was right and that Hilda was wrong. But with the next day had come the awful truth; “Damnit, she’s right!” She had shoved the book back onto her bookshelves and disappeared into her study to ring Hilda.
"Hilda! I would have been right! Only there's a page missing from my book, and it must be that page which tells us about Barton and Eurwyn!" Hilda had laughed quietly, and then hung up still giggling to herself. Nell smiled in happy memory, even as her eyes refilled with tears.

She turned now, making her way quietly through the door into the silent chalet. Wearily she trudged up the stairs and along to her room.
“Nell?”
She turned and saw Gillian Culver, her secretary, peering anxiously out of her room towards her.
“How’s Hilda? Is she ok?”
Nell’s eyes, already filled with unshed tears, began to brim over, and fall softly down her cold cheeks.
“Oh, Nell! Not that!”
“No! No, she’s still alive, but she’s… she’s very ill” Nell gulped out the last few words, before starting to cry in earnest once more.
Gillian hurried out of her room, and wrapped a comforting arm around Nell. She led her into her bedroom, and sat her down in the one comfy armchair the room boasted. Gill speedily turned on Nell’s little heater and handed over her night clothes.
“Best get changed Nell; sitting here crying wont help Hilda you know,” she continued in her most conversational tone.
“I’m going to make you some hot milk then you’re going to bed and to sleep. Anything else you have to do can easily wait until tomorrow.” Nell nodded wearily in acquiescence, even as she dried her tears on her dressing gown, her handkerchief being too wet to be of any use now.
15 minutes later and she was tucked up, dozing quietly, and Gillian was able to steal softly from the room. A deep sigh escaped her lips as she thought of her old Head lying so close to death. She knelt down by her bed, and prayed even as those at the Chalet did, that Hilda would survive the night and come back to them once more.

More! Thanks to Cathie B for letting me use 'her' Kathie and Nancy! (So much nicer than EBD's!)

Wearily Nancy opened her bedroom door, and to her surprise found the room already occupied. Kathie was curled up comfortably on Nancy’s bed, cuddling a cushion and gazing distantly out of the nearby window. The old porcelain stove was stoked up and was giving out a welcome heat to the chilled Nancy. Kathie scrambled off the bed and wrapped her arms tightly around her partner’s slumped shoulders.
She led her to the bed and sat her down. She unwound Nancy’s great scarf which was still wrapped a round her neck and threw it to the top of the nearby chest of drawers. Swiftly closing the curtains, Kathie turned back to see Nancy crumble into heaving sobs, her whole body shaking violently.
Kathie held Nancy close, murmuring soothing words of comfort. "Hilda will get better, God-willing, and until we know which way things will go for her, we must stay strong!” Kathie spoke almost fiercely, trying to cover up her own emotions.
“Come Nancy darling! Dry your eyes, those tears won’t help anyone, will they?”

After some minutes more of cuddling, Kathie felt Nancy relax in her arms. Glancing down at the exhausted woman, Kathie shrugged herself into a more comfortable position and settled down for a long night.

Kathie awoke in the early hours of the morning, feeling chilled to the bone. Looking round the room, she realised that the stove had gone out. Without a hope of being able to relight it without completely waking Nancy up, she resolved to do her best to get them both warm again.
Moving Nancy as best she could, she manoeuvred herself so she could pull the thick plumeau over the both of them. After a little bit of contortionism, which she wasn’t even aware that she could do, she managed to have them both covered up. With a sigh she snuggled back down and could feel Nancy twist slightly in her sleep to get comfortable. As Kathie lay there unable to get back to sleep, her thoughts wandered to the possible fate of her Head. Her own eyes began to fill, but she resolutely drove the tears back; she had no wish to wake Nancy. An arm snaked its way around her slim waist as Nancy turned over and instinctively cuddled closer to her. With a smile, Kathie gave up on her thoughts and turned her mind to sleep.

*Pokes Nell and various others!* What are you all crying for?! That was meant to be an 'aww!' post, not a weepie one! Or not much anyway tongue *************************************************** Here's some more for you though, cos I'm so nice! Thanks to Ally for proof reading and hugs for Vikki who's MSN wouldn't let her proof read too!

Nurse Carrie Griffiths heaved a deep sigh. It was 4:21am and she had just finished checking on her patient. Reaching for her coffee mug, she took a deep mouthful and closed her eyes, wishing she could go to sleep. She remained still for several moments, revelling in the silence around her.

With a low groan, she opened her eyes, picked up her pen and pulled Hilda's Kardex towards her.
She quickly filled in her report, checking one or two of the machines attached to Hilda as she did so, making sure the information written down was correct.

Footsteps sounded at the far end of the corridor and Carrie looked up to see Jack Maynard walking briskly towards her.
“Hi Jack! Must say, you’re looking a bit more with it than you did a few hours ago!”
“Amazing what some shut-eye can do for you”, he replied with a grin.

He sobered immediately though as he glanced down at the Kardex lying open on the desk.
“No improvement then?”
“Sorry, Jack” Carrie spoke quietly.
“I didn’t expect it anyway, but one always hopes,” the words were almost inaudible.

Carrie glanced at her watch and rose from her seat. “I need to check her Obs. again. Want to have a look at her as you’re here?”
“Please”, said Jack.
Silently they made their way from the Nursing Station to Hilda’s bedside. Jack started to translate the data being read from Hilda’s inert body, whilst Carrie jotted down her blood pressure, pulse, temperature and oxygen saturation levels.
“Her sats. have dropped again, Jack. Pulse is steady but low, BP has also dropped slightly.”
Jack looked wordlessly at the machine readings.
“She’s on 100% O2, has been since she came in,” answering Jack’s unspoken look at the oxygen cylinder at head of the bed.
Jack removed a small pen-torch from his pocket and set about checking Hilda’s eyes for a response to the light he was shining at them.

After some minutes and several more tests, Jack signalled to Carrie to follow him back to the Nursing Station. Jack seated himself and pulled Hilda’s file towards him. Uncapping his pen, he found the last report written and slowly entered in his latest findings.
Behind him he could hear Carrie in the small staff kitchen, pottering around. Moments later she was joined by several staff members, returning from checking their own patients, and in need of coffee before settling down to write their own Kardex’s.
“Coffee for you Jack,” with a grateful look Jack accepted the proffered mug of hot liquid and took a small sip.
Muted voices came from behind him as the nursing staff discussed trivial matters, trying to stop themselves from yawning deeply.
Jack signed his name, dated and timed the report and closed the file, placing it back in the tray at the side of the desk. With a quick glance round, he stood and walked to the window looking into Hilda’s room. His hand sought out his rosary beneath his shirt, and clutching it tightly, he prayed intensely for his old friend.

Just a tiny bit... and thank you to my lil Viking for proofing for me!

Nancy and Kathie slept fitfully, tired out by their powerful emotions. The rising bell found them curled into each others arms, drawing comfort and strength from each other.
Sleepily they smiled sheepishly at each other, knowing that if they had been caught, they would have been in serious trouble.
“It’s ridiculous, I feel like a naughty Middle about to be caught out!”
Nancy giggled, “Don’t be silly! You’re a Senior, not a Middle!” Kathie threw a baleful look at her lover before quickly hurling a pillow at her and sitting on her legs so she couldn’t get up, tickled her ruthlessly.
“Mercy! Mercy! I apologise most humbly!” With a quick twist, Nancy got out from under Kathie’s legs, and caught her arms in her own. Before Kathie could retaliate, Nancy moved in closer and kissed her firmly on the lips, stopping her instantly.

Kathie sighed, “That’s not fair! You know that always works”.
“Exactly, why else would I do it?” Nancy murmured in her ear, eyes twinkling mischievously.
“Nancy Wilmot! You’re outrageous!”
Before Nancy could reply, footsteps were heard coming along the corridor towards the room. With stifled giggles they dived under the covers and lay still, hoping who ever it was would carry on walking and not look in.

Who, me? Wink Some more for you Smile Thanks to Gem for proofing!

With bated breaths, they waited, tense under the warm plumeau. The steps slowed, and seemed to pause before each foot was set down upon the floor. Finally they came to a stop right outside the bedroom door.
Nancy felt Kathie quiver beside her and muttered quickly to her, “Shut up you idiot!”
This however, only served to make Kathie want to giggle more, and with her chest heaving, her desire to laugh slowly became uncontrollable. Even as Nancy grabbed the formerly abused pillow to stifle her laughter, the steps resumed and quickened to continue past the door to the end of the corridor.

“Well, that was a bit close wasn’t it?”
Nancy glared at her, “And of course, you made it so much easier didn’t you?”
Kathie started giggling again, and as Nancy looked her, she felt the corners tugging at her lips as she too began to laugh.

Suddenly it dawned on them both that the rising bell had rung more than 5 minutes ago and they were still lying in bed. With separate gasps of horror, they jumped up and began scrambling for dressing gowns and in Nancy’s case, her wash bag and towels too.

Kathie scuttled out of the room, blowing a quick kiss over her shoulder, and raced down the now deserted corridor to her own room. Grabbing her wash kit, she turned and dashed back to the far end of the long corridor before diving into the bathroom. She could hear Nancy already tubbing herself rapidly, even whilst singing loudly and raucously. Kathie giggled again, even as she turned to see the bath taps running ready for her. With a smile towards the other bathroom cubicle, she added some soothing lavender oil to the hot water and then started on her teeth as she waited for the bath to fill.

Minutes later and they were both safely back in their own rooms, dressing hastily, before scurrying to the main staircase. Nancy was slightly ahead of Kathie, and now that they had got over their early morning antics, both had sobered, remembering their friend and Head.
“Nancy, Kathie, you two are late this morning.”
“Morning Ruth” they chorused at the same time.
“I’m on my way to the Senior Common Room. It’s time the girls were told about Hilda.”
Nancy nodded, finding herself welling up as she remembered the Head as she had left her last night.

She scrubbed at her eyes with her cardigan sleeve and followed behind as Ruth led the way to the Common Room.

No voices could be heard from within the room and for a moment Ruth thought that no one had seen the note she’d put up late last night on her way to bed. Opening the door however, revealed all the girls to be standing or sitting silently, awaiting the news Miss Derwent had for them.

Gloat gloat gloat! Wink

Jack and her fellow Prefects sat mutely together, trying desperately to draw strength from one another, and give strength to those around them. The Seniors had been excited by Miss Derwent’s notice at first, thinking it signified a fieldtrip or excursion to somewhere new. Chattering eagerly, they passed from the Hall to their Common Room, passing the few Middles and Juniors who were down early.

Felicity Maynard stared morosely after them, thinking how unfair it was to give the Seniors extra treats whilst they got nothing. She cheered up soon though, as her great friend Lucy Peters pointed out that the Authorities always provided for the whole school, and they would probably get their treat soon enough.
“After all, they have to be fair don’t they?”
“Yes, I suppose so” replied Felicity brightening up with her usual sunny smile.

They wandered off to join several more of their clan, happily forgetting all about the Seniors next door.

Miss Derwent had no need to ask for silence. The other Seniors had seen the faces of the Prefects, and had quickly guessed that Miss Derwent’s news would not be happy. Rosita had pressed forward and asked Jack what the matter was, but Jack had turned quickly away, hiding her tear filled eyes from the watching room.
Wanda shook her head at Rosita and placed a comforting arm around Jack’s shoulders, tucking a fresh handkerchief into her hand as she did so. Her silent warning said more than words ever could of how bad the news was to be.
Wild surmises swept round the room in murmured voices, each girl trying to guess the cause of the unexpected summons.

“Girls, I’m afraid we have some bad news for you. The Prefects already know, but we requested them to stay silent until we could have further information to pass on to you.” Miss Derwent paused, struggling to keep the tears from her voice and eyes. Behind her, Nancy and Kathie automatically reached for the others’ hand, seeking solace in their unity.

Nancy reached forward, and rested a tender hand on Ruth’s arm, providing the essential support she needed to continue.
With a deep breath, Ruth lifted her head and continued with her news.
“Yesterday evening Miss Annersley was taken seriously ill,” she held up a hand for silence as shocked outbursts came from the badly shaken girls, “She was taken to the San by ambulance, and is currently being observed by the doctors there.” On the last word Ruth’s voice broke and it was only with great difficulty that she prevented her own tears from falling, even as those around her let theirs fall in shock and grief.

Miss Annersley was dear to all, but to the Sixth especially she was a valued friend as well as wise mentor and guardian.

Miss Derwent stepped back and felt herself being hugged by Nancy and then Kathie. The girls wept quietly, shocked at this awful fate to have befallen their Head. After some minutes, Aileen stepped forward and jerkily spoke.
“Is, is Miss Annersley going go get better please?”
Silence for a moment as the three mistresses contemplated how best to answer this question of all questions.

Nancy spoke for the first time since entering the room, “God willing, yes,” She spoke so quietly that the girls had to strain to hear her. “But for now she lies very close to death and is deeply unconscious. We must all pray for her, for without prayer there is no hope, but with God at our side, we will always have hope.”

Kathie’s eyes had already been wet, but now hearing her partner speak so devotedly she freely let them fall, feeling no shame in showing her raw emotions.

For several minutes, silence prevailed upon the room. Candy Parkinson made the first move by dropping noiselessly to her knees, hands clasped as one and eyes closed together.
Around her she could hear more and more girls following her, until eventually the whole room was knelt in solemn prayer….

“Dear Suffering Savior, we come to you in prayer because you know what it feels like to be where we are. You are our High Priest who has been touched by the feeling of our infirmity. We thank you that the price has been paid. Forgive us our sins. We pray for your gift of eternal life through Jesus Christ in whom we now place our trust. We ask that the power of Jesus would flow into Hilda’s body today and that she would be made whole. In Jesus name. Amen.”

Silence fell as the last word echoed throughout the hushed room.

In the Hall, the Middles and Juniors were getting suspicious. The gong had rung more than 5 minutes ago, and there was still no sign of any approaching Seniors.
“Miss Derwent, Miss Wilmot and Miss Ferrars are missing too. And where’s the Head?” Felicity looked round her, perplexed.
“Stop fussing Flick! I’m sure they’ll be here soon – if the Staff are with them, then there’s no need to worry is there?” Lucy Peters said exasperatedly.
“Well, no, but still, where are they?”
“Flick! Give it a rest do! We’ll find out soon enough I’m sure. Here, have some more honey.”
Felicity accepted the honey and soon the chatter turned to the lessons of the day.

***
The silence slowly lifted as one by one, the girls rose to their feet and stood uncertainly, looking to the three Mistresses for guidance.

Miss Derwent looked at girls and spoke gently, “Miss Wilmot and I will be telling the rest of the School after breakfast. They will not be told as much as we have told you, naturally. Please keep it from them as much as you can. We still have hope for Miss Annersley, and there is no need for them to worry needlessly.” She paused, allowing the girls time to absorb this.

“Those of you who wish to may go to the Splasheries first, otherwise please make your way to the Hall for Breakfast. Yes, I know you feel unable to eat at the moment,” as the girls made an outcry at the thought of food, “but you must do so. Starving yourselves will help no one and will only serve to add to the interest from the younger girls. Please make sure give no cause of alarm to them.”

Nancy spoke up, “We will tell you any news as soon as we know any.” She carried on quietly, “I know you will all continue to pray for Miss Annersley, but pray also for those around you, to have the strength to support her and her friends.”

She turned and left the room, making for the Staff Splasheries so she could dry her eyes and make herself presentable once more.
Kathie and Ruth dismissed the Seniors, with repeated words of warning not to speak of the Heads illness until given permission too, before following Nancy.

Surreptitiously wiping her eyes, Kathie glanced at Ruth and saw how close to breaking down the elder woman was.
“Why don’t you go to the Staff room, Ruth? I’ll ask Karen to send some breakfast up to you; Nancy and I will cope with the School.”
Ruth sighed, “I can’t Kathie – “
“Nonsense, Ruth!” Kathie cut in, “Of course you can. Now go on – and make sure you eat all Karen sends up. I’ll come up to see you afterwards,” with a smile she nodded to her, and pushed her gently up the corridor.
Ruth gave in and by the time she reached the sanctuary of the Staff room, she was grateful to Kathie for insisting on her coming here.

She lowered herself into her favourite armchair and sat thinking quietly until soft footsteps coming along the passage and a gentle knock on the door announced Greta with her meal.

Sorry for the spree (well, there is a 2 day difference tongue) but here is some more drabble. Not much sorry, but Rasputin is being a pain and not letting me get on *growls in R's direction* Thanks to Pim for proofing sunday and Vikki for helping tonight!!

The school became silent as the bell on the Staff table pealed out. Miss Wilmot stood and smiled uncertainly down at them. She was about to speak when Miss Ferrars touched her arm and urgently whispered something in her ear. Nancy nodded briefly in reply and turned once more to face the school.
“Good morning, School.”
A murmured reply, then silence once more, the girls showing curious faces towards her and the rest of the Staff.
“I would like you all to go and see to your dormitory work as quickly as you can and return here once you have finished. That is all; please stand for Grace.”

Miss Wilmot’s voice solemnly read out the brief Grace, before dismissing the School to its morning tasks.

“Kathie, Dorothy – could you find the Maynard, Russell & Bettany girls and send them to the study please? Marjorie, would you mind finding the rest of Hilda’s ‘nieces’ and doing the same? We’ll have to tell them separately to the rest of the school; it’s not fair for them to find out like this.” Nancy shook her head sadly, not relishing the task ahead of her.

With nodded agreements, the three chosen mistresses hurriedly left the room to search for the girls.

A diddy bit more - thank you Vikki, for looking it over for me!

The shocked silence was broken by Nancy.
“And so girls, we must ask you to be strong for Auntie Hilda’s sake – she will need your prayers for the next few days, until she is feeling better.” Nancy spoke the simple words quietly, yet they were filled with such strong emotion that even young Claire could feel it and was affected by it.
There was a gentle tap on the door and Matron appeared, a tender look upon her face as she surveyed the grief stricken girls before her.

She held out her hands to the younger members and led them away from the study to the tranquillity of her own room, where Claire and Philippa sobbed uncontrollably into her comforting arms.
Matey murmured soothing words to them, letting them cry out the worst of their sorrow, consoling them as they absorbed the news of Auntie’s illness.

Back in the study, the elder girls were looking uncertainly at each other, each knowing that there was more to come, yet not daring to ask for it.
Tentatively, Felicity raised her head and looked at Nancy.
“Miss Wilmot, there’s more isn’t there?”
“Yes, Felicity, there is.” Nancy stopped, unsure how to go on. Slowly she stood and walked in front of the desk, towards the low sofa at the side of the room.
“Come and sit down girls.”
The girls moved towards her and seated themselves next to her, or on the armchairs placed opposite the sofa. A small coffee table separated them, and Cecil leant forwards on it, eager to hear what Nancy was going to tell them next.

A little more Smile

Nancy took a deep breath, “Your Aunt is very ill. We have no wish to alarm the youngsters, but we know that you are old enough to be told just how serious her condition is. As things stand, we have no idea when Hilda will regain consciousness.” Nancy did not notice her slip into the more familiar name; she was trying desperately to control her voice, to stop it from shaking with the cold dread gnawing deep inside her.

“I know you will pray for her, but pray also for the doctors who are caring for her, for them to have the ability, under God, to bring her through these next few days, and to return her safely to us.
I know none of you wish to go into school today, but remember, it’s what Auntie Hilda would have wanted. You can help her by carrying on as normal as far as you can. She will only worry when she wakes, if you’ve all fallen behind in your school work because of her!”

Cecil was the only one who responded with a weak grin at the last sentence. The others sat motionless, letting the news sink in, forcing themselves to believe the softly spoken words.

Nancy was fighting herself, forcing down those terrible feelings of fear she could feel stirring inside of her. She had no wish to alarm the girls even more so, and to let her feelings show would panic them needlessly.

She stood up, clasping her hands behind her so the girls wouldn’t see them shaking uncontrollably.
“You may stay here for a few more minutes, but then I would like you to return to your form rooms and do your best with today’s work.”

Nancy lay in bed that night, thinking over the day. The girls, on the whole, had taken the news as well as Nancy has expected. Hilda’s nieces – both real and brevet – had been in shock all day, and their work had suffered badly. However, Nancy and the rest of the staff had expected this and made allowances for unusual behaviour.
“Nancy, my love?” Kathie’s voice sounded from beside her.
“Yes, dearest?”
“Are you ok? You’re awfully quiet.”
Nancy lay silent for a moment, before turning slightly to face Kathie.
“Yes, I’m ok, just thinking.”
“Thinking?”
“Of today, and the girls, and Hilda and – oh, everything really!”
Kathie said nothing, but snuggled closer to Nancy and wrapped a comforting arm around her.
“There’s nothing more you can do tonight. You know that the San people said that they will get in touch if anything changes. You need to relax now, and be ready for what ever tomorrow may bring us.”
They lay together on Kathie’s bed, each thinking her own thoughts, following her own path, but walking side by side.

Without any words, they quickly changed into their night clothes and cuddled together under the thick plumeau, only a kiss passing between them before the both fell into a deep slumber.

ETA: I've removed the part about Nell, as I've just realised it will fit in much better in a few posts time. Sorry for any confusion!!

Disgraceful gloating Miss Kirkum! *shakes head in despair - where's Uto when we need her?!* Thank you to Rosie and Miss Gloater for proofing and helping!

For many of the girls, the day had past in a kind of surreal day dream, unsure if it were real or just a dream, many had wandered the school with a slightly dazed look about them. Others could be found wet eyed and red cheeked, hastily stuffing handkerchiefs in pockets whenever someone came near.
The Seniors however, were to be found grave faced and sat in small groups talking quietly. They became mute when ever a younger girl came near; they had no wish for them to over hear what they were saying.

***

Joey Maynard had been told during the morning by her husband, and once she had pulled herself sufficiently together, she crossed the lawn to the gate in the hedge and made her way to the school. Her eyes were still red from crying, but Jack had forced her to get a grip on herself, saying that Nell and many others would need her for support.

Joey had choked back her sobs and answered him, gulping “I know Jack, but Hilda! Oh, Hilda! Jack she will be ok won’t she?” She had asked pleadingly.

“We hope so dearest, but she is in God’s hands, and we can only do as much as He wants us to do.” Jack’s voice had shaken as he said the words. He had great respect for the Chalet School’s Headmistress, and to see her as she lay now was a great shock, and one to which he would not easily recover.

“Come now sweetheart,” he cupped Joey’s face in his tender hands, and kissed her softly on her lips, “God willing, Hilda will pull through and she will soon be well again. But until then, we must stay strong. Dry your eyes darling, those tears won’t help anyone, will they?”

Jo gulped once more, fighting herself to stop. “No, I know they won’t help, but it’s just - such – a – shock” The last words were forced out as Jo took deep, steadying breaths of air.

With a shaky laugh, she accepted Jack’s faintly pink handkerchief and scrubbed her eyes. Offering it back to Jack, he looked at it and laughed ruefully.

“That’s the last time I let you anywhere near the washing Jo my girl! Fancy putting your pink frock in with my white handkerchiefs! Anna’s shrieks could be heard at the top of the Jungfrau!”

Jo laughed softly, “Yes I know! But I was in a hurry and I didn’t realise what I’d done until Anna came shrieking down the garden path, waving them wildly at me like some kind of semaphore signal!”

Jack looked down at his wife, and was glad to see the strain had left her face, although deep anguish still showed in her dark eyes. He laughed again and, tucking the damp hanky into his jacket pocket, he pulled Jo to her feet and sent her off to the washroom with a tender kiss.

Joey gave a feeble smile to herself as she stood on the top steps leading to the front door of the school. Shaking herself slightly, she walked purposefully forward and set off for the staff room, where she spent the next hour consoling sundry members of distraught staff, and being consoled in turn.

At sixteen hundred hours, Nell Wilson turned up. One look at her flushed face told those in the room that she had been to the San to visit Hilda.
Nell had sat completely inconsolable for at least 20 minutes when Joey decided to take a firm hand with her.

“Nell Wilson! Stop crying this instant and stop being so utterly selfish!” Nell stopped in sheer shock, and gazed open eyed at Joey.

“Do you think we don’t care as much as you do?” Joey continued softly. “We care for Hilda – we love her, but these tears won’t help her, nor us. Do you think she’d be happy with how you’re behaving?”

“A spineless jellyfish in fact!” Unnoticed, Matey had entered the room and now stood looking grimly down at Nell.

Nell made to protest, but was stopped by Matey’s upheld hand. “No, I don’t want to hear it Nell. I think you’d be better of by going to bed. Take yourself off please - there’s no need for you to go back to St. Mildred’s tonight, I’ll tell Gillian that you’re staying here. The guest room is ready for you, I saw to it myself. Now off you go please, I have enough o do without seeing to you too.”
Matey’s tart tones were softened though, as she gently squeezed Nell’s shoulder, before turning on her heel and marching out.

You might recognise this bit - it was posted on pg 18, but I removed it a few minutes ago, and altered it a bit, because it fits in much better here! Thanks to Pim for proofing the changes and helping me change odd things Kiss

Nell Wilson tossed and turned restlessly in her bed, unable to remove the terrifying image of Hilda lying so close to death just a few miles away. Shortly after 2 o’clock in the morning, she gave up her fruitless attempts at sleep, and made her way to the guests’ sitting room, pausing only to switch on the little kettle to make herself a hot drink.
Settling down with a cup of sweet tea 5 minutes later, Nell let her thoughts drift to the happy times she and Hilda had shared together.
Her daydreams gradually turned into real dreams and she eventually settled into a light, yet fitful sleep.

Waking the next morning, Nell groaned with stiffness; evidently sleeping in an armchair wasn’t such a good idea! Stretching her limbs out one by one, she forced herself to stand and fought the cruel cramp in her arms and legs for several minutes before making a move to the small en suite bathroom.

Standing under the shower, Nell contemplated what she had been told the day before…

“…she’s ill Nell, very ill. Truthfully speaking, I don’t know how much we can do for her. She’s a fighter, and it helps, but there’s only so much that a body, and mind, can take…”

The words came back to her with haunting clarity and she felt herself shiver, even in the heat of the water.

Her face clouded over and she thought desperately of the friend she loved so dearly, and to whom she knew she was so close to losing.

After much negotiation with my Advisor (Aka Vikki), the completion date for this drabble is set for.....

December 2022!

My Advisor pushed for 2021, but after explaining that I must allow for dramatic pauses between posts, we finally agreed on 2022.

Nell stood at the bottom of the bed, hands entwined in each other, staring down at Hilda’s motionless body. Every now and again, her eyes would flicker slightly and hope would spring into Nell’s eyes, only to be replaced moments later by deep despair as Hilda showed no further signs of waking up.
A slight movement by the door caused Nell to turn, and smile shakily at Joey.

“How is she?”
“She’s still… still the same.”
With a low sigh, Joey rested her hand on Nell’s arm for a brief moment, before moving forward and gently kissing Hilda’s brow.

“Get well soon Hilda; we miss you.”

Reaching up to hug Nell, Joey’s eyes were wet with unshed tears, though she bravely fought them back.

With arms around each other, they quietly left the room and walked the corridor to the Matron’s room.

Sitting opposite each other, they stared mutely at one another unable to really see or think. Eventually Nell’s thoughts jumbled themselves into some kind of order and she was able to ask Joey about the triplets.

“The girls will be here shortly – they all insisted on coming to see Hilda. Margot has had to re-arrange a class, but the University have been wonderful – her Tutor even drove her to the Airport.”

Nell smiled weakly. “Len and Con?”

“They are coming out together. Margot reaches Interlaken before them, so she said she will wait for them, and they can all travel up together.”

Nell nodded and smiled again.

******

An hour later, just as Joey and Nell were finishing off a light meal brought to them by Matron, they heard light footsteps sounding down the corridor. Moments later subdued voices could be heard asking for them, and a low voice directed the unseen guests into the sitting room.

“Mama!”

Joey jumped to her feet and gathered her three eldest daughters into her arms, hugging them tightly to her.

“My darlings!”

The girls clung tightly to her, before turning to Nell.

“Aunty Nell!” Len released her Mother, before embracing Nell in a warm hug.

As Nell felt the young arms circle her neck, the tears she’d been fighting since she had woken that morning now began to fall silently down her cheeks.
Len looked up into her eyes and saw the deep anguish there. Tucking her arm through her Godmothers, she led her back to the sofa and settled her down on the seat. Con appeared with a cup of sweet coffee for her Mother, and Margot followed with one for Nell.

The five sat together until Jack arrived at the end of his shift.

“Jo?”

Joey looked up from her lap, and quietly asked her husband the question they were all reluctant to ask, the one they almost didn’t want to know the answer to.

“Is Hilda any better?”

Sorry for spree! (Thanks Vikki, for proofing once more!)

Jack took a deep breath in, before sadly shaking his head.

“No, she’s no better.”

He said no more, but he didn’t need to; they knew Hilda was as ill as she could be, and words weren’t going to change that.

*****

The triplets walked together to Hilda’s room, gripping each others hands for support. One by one they entered the room, each wanting a few moments privacy with their Aunt before turning and leaving the room with tears spilling down their faces.

Margot went first, then Con, both struggling to remain calm whilst with Hilda. This lady, this pale, almost lifeless lady, was an unknown person to them. The body laying there so calmly was not the Aunt they loved so dearly, but a shell of the former soul that they had all cherished and looked up to.

Finally only Len remained outside the room.

Having watched each of her sister’s leave in tears, with looks of deepest anguish on their faces, she was almost reluctant to go in, scared of what she would see, not wanting to face the awful truth of her Aunt’s near-fatal condition. Taking a hold of herself and sternly repeating ‘I am not a spineless jellyfish’ over and over again, she walked unsteadily into the room and longed to see her Aunt sitting up with eyes open and a warm greeting on her lips…

I am... hehee.

Anyway, here's some more!

Len stood silently at the side of the bed, looking down with tear filled eyes at the person so dear to her who lay there, so still and so pale. She raised a hand to gently wipe away a tear, and turned away from the bed. She stood fighting for her self control, before walking from the room and going to seek her sister.

She found Margot in their Aunt Helen's sitting room, holding a tissue and sobbing heart-brokenly. Len sat down beside her, and laid her head on Margot's shoulder. Margot shifted slightly and turned to hug Len. They looked silently at each other, each knowing what the other thought.

Con walked in and sat down besides them. She choked out ''How is...?" Len straightened up, and turned to her sister.

"Still unconscious. Reg said they were doing everything they could, but we should prepare ourselves for the worst. Her heart is so weak..." Her voice trailed off and she slumped a little, before again straightening and continuing "Her heart is weak, and they know it is only so much time before they can do no more."

Con nodded silently, whilst Margot sat, tears unchecked now and rolling down her cheeks, her whole body shaking uncontrollably.

"No," She thought, "It can't happen - God would never be so cruel or unkind."

Yet all she could think off was the still form of her brevet Aunt, lying so peacefully. Margot raised her head. "We must do something." Her voice was strong and the tears had stopped, although her body still shook occasionally. Her sister's looked at her in amazement.

"Yes!" She insisted. "Who better to talk to now? Only God can help us, and He is who we must turn to." She dropped to her knees as she finished speaking and removed her rosary, twining into around her fingers.

Len and Con looked at each other, then as one, dropped to Margot's side and removed their rosaries. The three turned to the chest beneath the window, and let their elbows rest upon it. The sun shone through, catching in their hair, making it shine and glow. With bowed heads, they began to pray...

Many MANY hugs and thank-you's to Jo for her help with the next 2 posts - you're a star!!

Hilda wandered down the street, shifting her gaze from the brightly coloured flowers hanging from the swinging baskets to the picturesque steeple of the quaint old church. The sun catching the early morning dew on a nearby cobweb brought a dancing light to her eyes, its simple pleasure filling her with a joy only brought on by nature's pure and simple beauty.

She smiled, returning the early morning greetings of the local people. Making her way to the bakery, she passed by the small fountain, laughing quietly as a young mop headed youth sat at the edge, dangling his feet in the cool water.

Already, early as it was, the heat from the sun was warming the pavement she walked on, giving promise of a hot and sultry day.

Paying for her croissants and exchanging pleasantries with the baker himself, Hilda’s mind kept niggling at her. Sure that she was meant to be doing something, she occupied herself with trying to remember what it was. Meanwhile she utterly failed to notice the erstwhile efforts of her great friend & colleague who was frantically trying to attract her attention.

Some more for you Smile

“Really, Hilda! What on earth are you thinking about?” Nell’s tone was light and full of laughter, a large grin spread wide across her face. Mindful of what Hilda had been reading before she retired for bed the previous night, she went continued, “Surely Con’s essay doesn’t compare that well to Shakespeare’s himself?”

“Oh, Nell! I didn’t see you my dear.”
“Evidently”, commented Nell dryly.
Hilda laughed, her eyes dancing. Glancing at her friend, she noted that Nell still had that questioning look about her.
“I’ve forgotten something and I’m trying to remember what it is,” she said simply.
“I think I can help you with that… seeing as I’ve found you here instead of in the Entrance Hall, you may find that it is me whom you have forgotten to remember about.” Nell spoke with as little emotion as was possible, her delicate eyebrows arched ever so slightly upwards, a hidden grin playing on her lips.
Hilda turned, an expression of utmost shock on her face.
“Nell! Oh my goodness, my dear I am sorry!” The apologies came thick and fast, Hilda feeling incredibly guilty having forgotten all about their late night plans to go for an early morning walk, then buy breakfast on their return.
It was some minutes later before Hilda noticed that Nell still hadn’t spoken a word in return to her apologies, and had her back turned slightly away, so that Hilda couldn’t see her face. Enlightenment dawned suddenly.
“Nell Wilson! Turn around this instant!”

There was a muffled giggle, then Nell felt herself being turned sharply round as a hand fell upon her shoulder and twisted her. Trying desperately to hide her laughter, she hung her head and avoided Hilda’s stern gaze.

“Look at me!” Hilda’s voice cracked out like a whip, and Nell responded instantly to it; ‘Just like a naughty Middle’, mused Hilda.

One look into the steely eyes had Nell spluttering out loud, unable to control her laughter any longer. “Really Nell, you’re acting like a, like a suppressed Middle!!”

Nell collapsed weakly onto the side of the fountain, and was only saved from falling in by Hilda’s quick grasp of her wrist.

“Oh, Hilda! Your face!” Nell was turning red now, her cheeks glowing with mirth. “I wish I had my camera with me!”

“I’m only thankful that you don’t!” A slight pause whilst Hilda gazed down at her friend with a defiant air, then “Well, as you’re up at last, shall we go for that walk?”

Nell choked, “what do you mean, up at last?! I’ve been in that sitting room for half an hour, waiting for you!”

“Curious that I didn’t see you whilst I was drinking my coffee and reading the newspaper.” With which comment, accompanied by Nell’s blushes, Hilda turned and walked off slowly down the street with a wicked grin on her lips, leaving Nell to trail meekly along behind her.
