Two years after Time for a Change

“You may now kiss the bride.” The priest announced and after acting upon this pronouncement, the bride and groom turned, smiling. The organ triumphantly sounded Mendelssohn’s Wedding March, as the newly wed couple made their way down the aisle and out into the bright sunshine.

The congregation gradually followed, blinking slightly as they left the soft shadows of the church and crowded round the newlyweds, offering congratulations and good wishes, as, above them, the church bells pealed out joyously.

Then the photographer was marshalling them into groups, taking photos, making jokes about needing a wide-angle lens to fit the whole family in the picture. The bridal couple were driven off to Freudesheim, followed by a trail of guests, for the reception.

Every corner of the house was soon filled with voices and laughter. The entire Maynard family had managed to attend the wedding, along with most of their cousins, the Bettanys and the Russells. The garden was crowded with family members and friends catching up on each other’s activities and numerous children ran squealing and giggling among them.

Upstairs in the relative quiet of the old nursery, Felix took out his notes for his speech and read them through, hoping he wouldn’t mess it up. Here he was found by his twin sister, Felicity, a short while later.

“What are you doing hiding up here?” she demanded.

“Just checking through my speech, and getting a few minutes peace and quiet.” He told her.

“Well, the newest Mrs Maynard is looking for you, so you’d better make an appearance soon.”

Felix got up from the window seat and straightened his jacket. “Come on then, I’d better go and find her.”

They left the room and headed down the stairs.

Catherine Robertson sat in a comfortable chair in the garden and smiled as she watched the children playing tag. She mused at how much they had grown up over the last couple of years. By her feet 18-month old Rick, the youngest of Len’s children, was pulling up grass and piling it in a neat heap. Despite the noise and activity, Catherine felt at peace. She put her hand up and touched the small scar on her forehead and was glad once more as she had been many times over the last two years that she had not turned her back on her family. She smiled happily at Geoff as he made his way over to her carrying a couple of glasses of wine.

“Thanks,” she accepted a glass and he sat down in a nearby chair.

“So, now that the fandango is over, let’s catch up. What have you been up to lately?”

“This and that, nothing very exciting, how about you? Still glad you made the move to the Welsh san?”

“Oh yes, it’s definitely a good career move. Are you enjoying the quiet life here?”

“You know, at one time, I never thought I would, but I feel safe and happy here. I don’t think I would change a thing about my life right now.”

“No plans to settle down and get married?”

“I could ask you the same question,” retorted Catherine. “No, I’m quite happy to remain the doting maiden aunt, thank you very much”

Joey, coming to join them at that point, overheard. “You know I used to say that,” she laughed, “and just look at us all now!”

“Yes, but that was different,” argued Catherine, “you met Papa and fell in love.”

“Well, it could happen to you as well.” Jo told her. “Or to you Geoff,” she added, turning to include him. It’s the greatest happiness you can have.”

“It won’t happen to me.” Catherine said decidedly. “I’m never going to fall in love or trust any man ever.” She looked sombre, and Joey quickly changed the subject to distract her from her thoughts.

Yes she does - sorry, there will be some catching up shortly, but the bunny insisted on the wedding first!

Anthony Tinlow watched as his wife came out in the garden and went to join her. “You okay?” he asked, dropping a kiss on her forehead, “Not overdoing it are you?”

She rested a hand on the curve of her belly and smiled up at him. “I’m fine. Don’t worry.”

“Hey, I’m your loving husband, it’s my job to worry about you.” He slipped his arm round her waist and led her over the grass, “Let’s go and get some food before the hoards known as the family eat it all.”

“Good idea,” answered Felicity, “I’m ravenous – and eating for two – the second one of whom seems to have got your appetite already!”

Anthony laughed “Well let’s get him fed then. I hope he’s not craving anything strange today.”

“Might be a her. Anyway, what’s so strange about cheese and marmalade?”

“Cheese and marmalade?” asked Con as they joined her at the buffet table and she heard the tale end of the conversation. “I couldn’t get enough of that when I was carrying my boys.”

“See, told you those cravings mean it'll be a boy.”

Felicity pulled a face at her husband. “We’ll have to wait and see won’t we. Oooooooh beetroot!”

With a squeal, Isabella chased her twin round a tree and back up the garden, the pair of them narrowly avoiding running into a table laden with drinks, before Joaquim was caught up by his father. “What are you two up to, rascal?” he asked, as he swung him up into the air.

“Bella says she’s going to catch me and make me marry Evelyn.” Joaquim explained. “I don’t want to get married.”

“You have to get married.” Bella told him firmly, “I want to be bridesmaid again.”

Mike lowered Quim and squatted down on level with his daughter. “You’re still bridesmaid until the end of today.” He assured her. “Quim doesn’t have to get married until he’s a lot older.”

“Will he have to be as old as you to get married, Daddy?” asked Bella with interest.

“Well, maybe not quite as old as I am now,” smiled Mike, “but you have to be grown up to get married.”

“But Auntie Flisty got married and grandmamma says that she’ll never grow up.” Bella argued.

“Uncle Felix isn’t married and he’s as old as Auntie Flisty” countered Quim.

“This looks like a very serious conversation,” came Laura’s voice from above them, “what’s it all about?”

“It’s ’bout getting married.” Quim told her. “Auntie Flisty has a baby in her tummy because she got married. Now that you’ve married Daddy have you got a baby in your tummy?”

The bride blushed a charming shade of pink. “No, people don’t always get babies in their tummies when they get married. But I might do one day.” She looked half-shyly at Mike and he longed for the opportunity to take her away somewhere private. For now, he contented himself with returning her look with one that caused her face to grow even pinker and her breath to catch in her throat.

“Just look at them,” Felix murmured to Len. “They might be the only people in the world, those two and the children.”

“Are you ok?” Len asked, “You don’t mind Laura marrying Mike?”

Felix laughed, “Oh I’m not jealous of Mike like that, if that’s what you mean. Laura was a dream that’s now gone, there’s friendship there, but nothing else. I know now that she was right to turn me down, it wouldn’t have worked out for us. I’m just envious of what they have. I sometimes wonder if it’ll even happen for me.” He sighed wistfully, and then laughed again. “Come on, this is a wedding day, we should be celebrating. Is it time to dance in a circle around them yet?”

Len laughed. “Not yet, I believe we have to go through all the speeches first – I hope you’ve got yours ready?”

Felix patted his pocket. “All in here. Unless you’ve thought of any other embarrassing memories you’d like me to include at the last minute. Thanks for the tale about the blackleading.”

Len laughed again, “I’m sure you’ve got enough! Now come on, help me find out what trouble my children are plotting.” She indicated the group of girls giggling in the hammock.

It was a perfect wedding day, the sun shone, the bride was radiant, the speeches went well with lots of uproarious laughter at some of the stories Felix raked up about Mike. He also slipped in a few anecdotes about Laura’s early days on the Sonnalpe, before covering the last couple of years.

“... and we all know Mike’s a brave man – he risked his life to save our sister, Catherine, and he faced the possibility that he might lose his leg with courage, and underwent the treatment with determination and optimism, which we are so pleased was rewarded by a good recovery.” Felix paused and cleared his throat, “But I know that, even it hadn’t been, nothing would have deterred Laura from marrying him. I think in terms of determination the two of you are very well matched, although it may lead to you needing your heads knocking together from time to time."

And so, my advice to the newly weds, taken not from my own experience, but from those I’ve observed around me, and the best example we could have had, our parents, is to talk to each other. Even if you think your thoughts and feelings should be obvious, don’t rely on that and tell each other. The good things, and the bad, although I hope they don’t come along often. Talk to each other about them and may you be as happy and blessed together and Mamma and Papa have been over the years.

Ladies and gentlemen. Please be upstanding and raise your glasses for the bride and groom. To Mike and Laura and many years of joy together.”

The voices of the guests were raised in a chorus of best wishes that could be heard for quite some distance away.

Some hours later, a car stopped outside a quiet house in Göschenen The passengers got out and thanked the driver, who after removing their suitcases from the boot, promptly drove off into the twilight

Ignoring the cases for a moment, the taller of the two swung the other up into his arms and carried her along the path, despite her protests.

“Mike, what are you doing? Put me down! Mike, you’ll hurt your leg!”

“What? A featherweight like you! Nonsense! Anyway, I’m going to do this properly!” he retorted, as he clutched at her with one arm and fumbled for the key.

She tightened her hold around his neck “Mike! You’ll drop me!”

“Oh ye of little faith!” he retorted as he managed to unlock the door and push it open. Then once again using both arms to hold her, he stepped over the threshold into the hallway.

“Welcome to your new home Dr Maynard,” he said, as his lips met hers. She abandoned her protests and kissed him back, before he eventually, carefully set her back on the floor.

“Why don’t you have a look around while I go and fetch in the cases.” he said.

Laura smiled “Don’t be long.” and as he stepped back out into the darkness she turned and looked around her. Then deciding that exploring could wait until Mike could show her around, she went upstairs to find somewhere to freshen up. Mike had spent so much time on the platz, convalescing as his leg slowly healed, that Laura had never been to his home in Göschenen, and she stood looking at the row of doors a little uncertainly.

The first door she tried was, surprisingly, the right one and by the time she had had a quick wash, tidied her hair, decided it wasn’t worth replacing her lipstick and emerged back onto the landing, Mike was on his way upstairs with a suitcase.

“Our room is the last on the left.” he told her and she went ahead of him along the passageway. Then she opened the door and gave a soft gasp of surprise.

The room was lit with candles. Music was playing softly from a cassette player. A bottle of champagne, water condensing on the outside with two glasses was on a small table, and the bed was strewn with rose petals.

“Do you like it?” asked Mike, as she paused in the doorway.

“Oh, Mike, it’s beautiful!” she turned and slipped her arms around his neck. “Just perfect!”

“Are you sure? You don’t mind being here instead of going away?”

“I can’t think of any better place to start our married life than in our own home.” she assured him.

“Me neither,” answered Mike, dropping a quick kiss on her lips before letting go of her and crossing the room to pour the champagne. His hands shook slightly as he poured and he wondered why he was so nervous. Then he looked up and caught sight of Laura as she gazed at the bed and realised she was just as nervous, if not more so, than he was.

He walked over to her and handed her a glass. “To the newest Dr Maynard.” he said clinking his glass against hers, his gaze holding hers intently.

That charming shade of pink washed over her again as she took a sip from the glass and then clinked it against his “To my new family.”

“To us.” said Mike,

“To us” agreed Laura, her eyes shining with love as she touched her glass to his again.

Catherine hung up a decidedly damp dishtowel and checked round the kitchen once more for any stray items. Seeing none, she followed Phil and Roddy out of the room and they joined the rest of the family, still in the garden, enjoying the light summer evening.

“All done,” announced Geoff as they arrived.

“Oh well done”

“Thank you.”

Came a chorus of replies.

“Well, they’re finally married!” said Phil, “Did anyone find out where they were going for a honeymoon?”

“Not a clue.” answered Steve. “Seemed to be some kind of state secret. As if they thought we’d sabotage it or something!”

“Well after what you and Charles persuaded the hotel to do to our room, I’m not surprised!” answered Felicity laughing. “We could hardly move for balloons!”

“Ah well, if you’re obstructed from one course of action, you just find another.” Charles grinned.

“What have you done this time?” asked Phil curiously.

Steve chuckled, “Let’s just say they’re going to be finding confetti for a very long time.”

There was an appreciative giggle, then after a pause Catherine got up.

“Well, I think I’m going to head home,” she announced. “You coming now or later Charles?”

“Oh I’ll come now,” answered Charles, getting up from the grass. “After all that champagne you probably need somebody to stop you falling down the mountain.”

“Speak for yourself!” answered Catherine mock-haughtily. “Bye everyone, I’ll see you all tomorrow”

To a chorus of goodbyes, Charles and Catherine left.

Catherine had lived at Freudesheim for the first year after the accident, then she had decided it was time to become slightly more independent, although she didn’t want to be on her own. When Charles had suggested they share a chalet between them, it had seemed like an ideal solution. They had found a suitable chalet in Laustadt and had settled in amicably. Charles still travelled the world, interviewing and photographing people, or writing special reports, and initially one of the other Maynards would come and keep Catherine company, or she would visit Len or her parents while he was away, but more recently she had felt able to stay on her own and even found she enjoyed the peace and quiet.

James Stewart was a frequent visitor to the little chalet in Laustadt. From a doctor–patient relationship, he and Catherine had slowly become friends, such good friends, in fact, that he would often ask Catherine’s advice or opinion about the women he dated. His current girlfriend had lasted several months and Charles had hinted that this one might be serious, although Catherine, who had met Denise several times, did not agree – she was a nice enough girl, she argued, but James would soon get bored with just nice. Charles had just smiled a masculine, infuriatingly superior smile and not said anything else.

Len, who had been present while the discussion went on, when appealed to had agreed with Catherine, although for completely different reasons, which she wisely kept to herself.

Mike awoke the next morning and smiled as he saw his wife sleeping peacefully next to him. Moving carefully, he got out of bed without disturbing her and made his way down to the kitchen.

Laura stirred a short while later and slowly opened her eyes. The first thing she saw was a single red rose on the pillow next to her. Blinking slightly she sat up and picked up the flower, smelling its fragrance and smiling. Then an exclamation from the kitchen reached her and she hurriedly got out of bed, pulled on Mike’s dressing gown, which was hanging on the back of the door and went downstairs.

In the kitchen she found Mike, confetti scattered around him on the floor as he brushed more of it off his pyjamas.

“Sorry, sweetheart, did I wake you?” he asked as she appeared in the doorway.

“I was awake already, just came down to see what was going on?”

“Well, I opened the cupboard door to get the plates out for breakfast and discovered it was booby trapped.”

Laura giggled. “I don’t suppose your brothers would have had anything to do with this, would they?”

“I think they must be the top suspects.” agreed Mike.

Laura reached out to remove some confetti from his hair. “Thank you for getting up first,” she giggled again.

Mike swiped a handful of confetti off the worksurface. “You don’t escape it that easily my love.” He sprinkled it over her with a grin. Laura reached for another handful to retaliate, and he pulled her close. “You’ve got confetti on the end of your nose,” he gently brushed it away with his finger then dropped a kiss in its place.

I wonder if Catherine has feelings for James. If she does, does she mind James dating so many other women?

I don't think Catherine has feelings for James, but I suspect Len thinks James has feelings for Catherine.

Mike and Laura's relationship is great, Liz -lovely and fluffy.

After the wedding weekend, the various family members had dispersed to their own homes, leaving Freudesheim quiet again, although Bella and Quim were still there and kept Joey and Jack on their toes for the next two weeks. The Entwistle girls were keen to come and spend time playing with their cousins, and made their way along to Freudesheim most afternoons. Catherine often came and joined them, taking part in their games, telling them stories and laughing with them. Jo and Jack watched, pleased to see her so happy after all she’d been through.

“I just wish she wouldn’t still shut herself away here.” thus Jo to Jack, one evening when the twins were asleep and the house was quiet. “She ought to be out having fun, enjoying herself while she’s still young, not living up a mountain keeping house for her brother.”

“She still needs time Jo,” answered Jack. “Yes, I know she’s had a couple of years, and she is gradually rebuilding her life, but we can’t push her into anything. It wouldn’t help. She needs to go at her own pace.”

“I just want to see her happy.” said Jo.

“Don’t fret about her Jo, she is happy in her own way. She has made some friends up here. But she may never be comfortable in a crowd or meeting new people again.”

“She said she’d never marry or trust a man again. I would so like her to find the happiness we’ve had together.”

Jack held Jo close. “I would like it too, sweetheart, and she may still do that yet, she’s got plenty of time.”

“All these years and you’re still a solid lump of comfort.” Jo lifted her face to his.

Liz - you've brought a smile to my face after a very cold, wet and miserable journey home from work - I love Joey and Jack as a couple in this scene - I can imagine it so well.

Sorry - more soppiness

A pair of arms wrapped around Laura’s waist as she brushed her hair, and she found her movements obstructed as Mike nuzzled the top of her head. Putting down the brush she turned in his arms and slipped hers around him.

“The last night of our honeymoon.” Mike said. “Are you ready for the invasion tomorrow?”

“I can’t wait.” Laura assured him. “It’s been wonderful just the two of us for the last two weeks, but Quim and Bella belong with us, and the sooner we’re all family together, the better.”

“And you don’t mind staying at home, caring for them? I know you worked hard and I don’t want you to feel it’s all wasted.”

“Mike, honestly, I don’t mind. Yes, I love being a doctor, but I always intended if I ever settled and had children to stop working, at least while they’re small. When they’re older there’ll be plenty of time for me to go back to work if I want to.” She grinned mischievously. “Of course, I might decide I like being a lady of leisure and you’ll have to spend the rest of our lives keeping me in the style to which I’m accustomed.”

“So long as we’re together for the rest of our lives, I don’t care if you work or not. As long as you’re happy.”

“As long as we’re happy,” she corrected him. “I’m not going to be happy if you’re not.”

“Then I promise to do anything in my power to keep us all happy.” Mike vowed.

“Me too.”

“Daddy!!” Two small whirlwinds flung themselves out of the car and onto Mike.

“Hello mischiefs” he said, hugging them tightly. “Have you had a good time with Grandmamma and Grandpapa?”

“Yes, but we missed you, Daddy.”

“We missed you too.” Mike ruffled Bella’s curls and took Quim by the hand. “Shall we go in and say hello to Laura? Come on in Dad,” he added to Jack, who was standing by the car smiling at the reunion.

“Laura’s our Mummy now.” Bella confided as they entered the house. “Mollie said that when ladies marry daddies they become mummys.”

“Did she now?” asked Mike.

“Yes,” Quim agreed. “But she’s not the Mummy in the photos, she’s a different Mummy.”

“We’re going to call her Mummy-Laura” said Bella,

Mike looked at Jack. “They came up with it all themselves.” Jack told him. “What have you done with my daughter-in-law anyway?”

“I’m here,” answered Laura, coming downstairs where she had been checking the twins’ bedrooms to make sure everything was just right.

It was her turn to be hugged and kissed and to listen to them as they both talked at once trying to tell her how Mollie had taken them to show them the magic noises that bounced back from nowhere. “I made them shout the loudest” Quim told her proudly.

“But I made them shout the longest!” Bella said. “Mollie counted it.”

“We’re going to miss them.” Jack said. “Your mother and I don’t know what we’ll find to talk about without all their questions to answer and discussions to moderate!”

Mike chuckled. “I’ve missed it myself.”

“Why don’t you come and visit us sometime in the autumn?” suggested Laura. “We’d love to have you.”

“I’ll talk to Jo, but that sounds lovely. By the way, did you know you have confetti in your hair?”

Laura reached to pick it out. “Where was it this time?” Mike asked in resignation, having so far had it descend on them from the top shelf of books in the study, two or three kitchen cupboards, and the top of the bathroom cabinet.

“Among the sheets I pulled out from the linen cupboard for the twins’ beds.” Laura grinned. “I have to say, Steve and Charles are thorough if nothing else!”

“Well, we’ll have to put some careful thought into our revenge.” Mike said, “Any ideas Dad?”

“Hey, I’m keeping out of this,” protested Jack. “You boys are not dragging me into it.”

“But ask your mother,” he added with a wink a moment later, before saying his goodbyes and heading back to the Platz.

Since you ask so nicely Mia Very Happy

2.5 months later – at Die Rosen

Felix was kneeling by the rose bushes that gave the chalet its name, pulling up weeds when he heard footsteps approaching.

“Dr Maynard?”

Felix glanced up and found himself looking into a pair of silver-grey eyes. “Yes,” he answered, his voice sounding slightly husky to his own ears. “What can I do for you?”

“I have a parcel for you – it was delivered to our chalet by mistake.”

Felix got up from his knees and brushed some soil from his legs. “Would you mind bringing it inside for me, I’m afraid I’m rather grubby.”

“Of course.”

He led the way into Die Rosen and indicated the salon. “If you’d like to go in there and take a seat, I’ll be with you in a moment.” He leapt up the stairs three at a time and hurriedly washed and changed into clean clothes before descending and entering the salon. He found his guest standing by the French windows, looking out into the garden. For a moment he paused in the doorway, admiring the slim silhouette, noticing the soft sheen of the brown silky curls. He had a sudden urge to touch those curls and find out if they felt as soft as they looked.

He moved into the room and the figure turned at the sound of his footsteps, still clutching the parcel and he noticed the delicate bone structure and creamy complexion, the curve of the red lips as they smiled and showed even, white teeth.

He held out his hand to take the parcel and smiled. “Thanks for bringing this over. I’m Felix Maynard.” He tucked the parcel under one arm and offered his right hand.

“Ellie Petherick.” She put her slim hand in his and smiled again.

Felix felt as if he were falling a long, long way and didn’t care if he never landed. With a start he realised he was staring and should say something.

“Uh… Ellie… is that short for something? Eleanor?”

“Um, well, actually it’s a bit embarrassing. It’s for, er, Galadriel. My mother had just read the first part of Lord of the Rings when I was born, and got the name from there.”

“Why’s that embarrassing, it’s a beautiful name.”

“You really think so?”

“Oh absolutely, a beautiful name for a beautiful person.” Felix couldn’t believe it when he heard himself say the words. What a cringeworthy thing to say!

Ellie didn’t appear to think so, however. Her face flushed a charming shade of pink and she appeared not to notice that Felix was still holding her hand. “Well, anyway,” she said, slightly flustered, “I’ve always been called Ellie, ever since I was little. Most of my friends don’t even know what it’s short for – I used to get teased about it a lot – or later, at university, if people knew they expected me to be a hippy chick or something like that, which isn’t me at all.” She wondered why she was burbling on like that, what on earth would he think of her? Why did it matter what he thought? The warmth from his hand seemed to travel up her arm and envelop her whole body.

Felix felt the parcel slipping and reluctantly released her hand, just in time to stop the package landing on the floor. He placed it on the coffee table, wishing he’d thought of that before he’d taken her hand in the first place, so he’d never have had to let it go. “Would you like some coffee?” he asked, straightening up again.

“Thanks, but I have to get going.”

“Oh, well maybe another time?” He felt irrationally disappointed.

She smiled, and the sun came out again. “I’d like that. Well, goodbye Felix, it was lovely to meet you.”

“You too, Ellie Petherick. Thanks for bringing my parcel.”

“You’re welcome.” By now they were at the door and she stepped out, turned round, and held out her hand again. He took it eagerly and smiled down into her silver-grey eyes. “Well, until we meet again.”

“Until then.” She smiled back, then turned and walked down the path.

Felix stood in the doorway and watched until she was out of sight, then raced upstairs to a window where he could follow her progress a little further.

...

Ellie walked slowly home, resisting the urge to turn and look back. Her thoughts were filled with images of the tall, fair doctor, his flaxen hair, his blue eyes, the little cleft in his chin. She remembered his smile and the warm feel of his hand holding hers. What had come over her? Could her life be turned upside down and inside out in one moment, just like that? She began wondering when she would see him again, then pulled herself up short. She was not in a position to be thinking like that. A holiday romance did not figure in her plans.

Felix was also talking to himself sternly. For goodness sake, you don’t go and fall in love with someone at first sight, he told himself. That just doesn’t happen. Not to you anyway. You’re far too logical and rational for that. You don’t even know anything about her other than her name. Nothing at all. Except she has the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen, her smile brightens up the whole room, and the touch of her hand sends tingles down my spine. She might even be married. No, there was no ring. He hadn’t registered looking, but he knew as well as he knew his own name that there had been no rings on her fingers. Even so, he told himself, that doesn’t mean anything. Doesn’t mean you’re in love with her. Doesn’t mean she could fall in love with you. You’re the sensible twin remember. Don’t go leaping into things you’re not sure of. Remember what happened with Laura. Galling though it was to have proposed and been turned down, it was even more galling to have to admit that she had been right to do so. Laura and he would never have worked out in the long run, he knew that now and had no wish to change the situation, but he would have to be careful. He wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice.

Felicity wandered slowly along the aisle in the quiet department store and looked at her watch. Another three-quarters of an hour before Anthony’s meeting would be over and he would come and find her here. Then they would go to his parents where they were planning to stay the weekend before going back home to their cottage in Broadwell.

“May I be of assistance madam?” came a polite voice and Felicity turned to see a carefully made-up, not-a-hair-out-of-place saleslady.

“Thank you, I’m just browsing.” she answered, hoping she didn’t get thrown out of the exclusive store as an interloper who clearly couldn’t afford anything.

The saleslady looked slightly disapproving. “Well, please do let me know if you require any assistance.” she said, before moving off to her next unsuspecting target.

Felicity wandered on, wishing she’d asked if there was a place she could sit down. Her feet were hurting. Maybe coming to London hadn’t been such a good idea, but it had seemed like it would be such fun, wandering around window-shopping for a couple of hours, and she had wanted to be with Anthony. She looked at her watch again, and was disgruntled to realise barely five minutes had passed since she last checked.

She selected another aisle to browse along, then wished she hadn’t as she saw the intimidatingly smart saleslady turn in at the other end. She started flicking through the skirts on the rail in the hope she wouldn’t be approached again, half-watching the saleslady out of the corner of her eye. Then suddenly she doubled over as a wave of pain engulfed her.

She straightened up again as the saleslady hastened her steps and arrived at her side. “Are you alright madam?” she asked politely.

Felicity looked at her. “Yes, thank you, just a momentary twinge.” she replied, and would have walked on, but a second wave overtook her and she bent over again. The saleslady put out a hand to steady her, and Felicity grasped it and hung on as it were a lifebelt.

“My baby,” she gasped as the pain receded again, “I think my baby’s coming! He shouldn’t be here yet.”

The saleslady continued to hold Felicity’s hand. “Okay,” she said soothingly, suddenly appearing not so remote. “Don’t panic, you’ll be fine.” She looked up and attracted the attention of a security guard, who hurried towards them. “Can you walk, do you think?” Felicity nodded. “Right, well let’s see if we can get you somewhere a little less public, first.”

She paused while Felicity bent over in pain again. The security guard strode purposefully towards them, anticipating a little excitement in his day, then stopped in his tracks, as he realised it wasn’t a case of shoplifting he had been summoned to deal with.

“Oh, Richards, could you put out an announcement through the store for a doctor, please” said the saleslady, “and then come back to us, we’ll be heading for the staff sitting room.”

“Yes Miss Gray,” answered the guard, relieved he didn’t have to do anything else immediately and hurried off. By the time Miss Gray had helped Felicity along to the doors marked ‘staff only’, the announcement was being called out. They waited for another wave of pain to pass and then Miss Gray opened the door and led her through, along a short corridor and into a room furnished with a sofa and comfortable chairs, with a sink in one corner.

Felicity didn’t take much of this in as she was helped onto the sofa. “Anthony, my husband, please, can you contact him?”

“Do you know where he is.”

A look of panic crossed Felicity’s face. “I can’t remember, he had a meeting with a publisher, somewhere, then he was going to meet me here.”

“Well don’t worry,” soothed Miss Gray, “we’ll find some way of contacting him when he arrives here. Anthony – what’s his surname?”

“Tinlow,”

“Anthony Tinlow. Richards – will you see to that please.

“Yes Miss Gray,” answered Richards promptly, and left the room, thinking how much more interesting his job had suddenly become.

Just caught up with this - hope they can find Anthony before the baby arrives, can't imagine giving birth in a shop. Hopefully, Felicity will make to the hospital first though.

I can remember reading an article in the newspaper about Harvey Nichols having to deny that they would give cash to any mother who gave birth in the store as there were so many pregnant mothers wandering round waiting to see if they went into labour Exclamation

“Now,” said Miss Gray, in an effort to distract her between contractions, “Mrs Tinlow …”

“Felicity.” said that young lady.

“Felicity?”

“It’s my name. Please, I’d much rather you called me that.”

A smile crossed the saleslady’s face, completing the transformation to human. “And I’m Juliette.” She answered.

“Thank you,” smiled Felicity, “Do you know about having babies?”

“Not really.” answered Juliette, “I have two nephews, but I wasn’ t there when they were born, although my sister told me plenty of tales about the birth. Let’s hope Richards call for a doctor brings someone here soon.”

As if on cue, the door opened and Richards ushered someone in. Felicity closed her eyes and squeezed Juliette’s hand as another contraction came.

“I’ve found a doctor for you Miss Gray. This is Dr Russell.”

Interesting to see nobody suggests that Dr Russell might be female - wonder if we've all been brainwashed by EBD!

The contraction passed and Felicity opened her eyes.

“Kez!” she exclaimed. “What on earth are you doing here?”

“You know him?” asked Juliette, somewhat surprised.

“My sister says you can’t go anywhere without bumping into somebody who’s family – I guess this proves her right.” answered Felicity. “This is my cousin, Kester Russell.”

Kester had little time to do more than nod at Juliette before he was kneeling on the floor next to the couch, asking Felicity professional questions about how early the baby was, how long since her waters had broken, how often the contractions were.

“Ok, Fliss, I’m just going to examine you, then we’ll see just what’s going on. Miss Gray, perhaps you could stay here in case I need some help, but if the gentleman would like to wait outside?” he looked at Richards, who nodded and opened the door.

“I’ll wait outside, Miss Gray, in case you need anything.” he said, and closed the door behind him.

“I want Anthony, where is he?” cried Felicity, as Kester finished his examination.

“We’re putting out regular calls for him, so he should be here as soon as he gets to the store.” Juliette reassured her. “I’m sure he won’t be long now.”

“Neither will this baby from the looks of things.” said Kester. “Fliss, I don’t think we’re going to have time to get you to a hospital, you’re going to have to have your baby here.”

“Here?” Felicity looked up startled.

“Your baby’s not giving you much choice, I’m afraid. Now let’s see if we can get you a bit more comfortable and perhaps your security guard...?”

“Richards – Dominic Richards” supplied Juliette.

“Richards can get a few items for us.” Kester scribbled a quick list and went to the door.

I do believe that Kevin, Kester, Felicity and Felix are all about the same age. The four of them were born in Canada. I think Kevin and Kester were born before the majority of the Maynards went to Canada.

Catherine.

Anthony walked briskly up one aisle and down another, his eyes ranging over the store, in search of Felicity’s fair head. He initially paid no notice to the tannoy announcement until he realised it was his name being called out.

“Mr Anthony Tinlow. If Mr Anthony Tinlow is in the store will he please come to customer services immediately. Mr Anthony Tinlow.”

What had his wife managed to do now, he wondered as he sought out the signs for customer services. Admittedly, he had never been summoned over a loud-speaker system in a shop before now, but the first year of their marriage had certainly not been uneventful, not that he would have had it any other way, he thought with a smile as he arrived at the desk.

“Yes, sir?” a bored-looking clerk greeted him.

“I’m Anthony Tinlow – you called for me to come here?”

“Oh yes,” the clerk got up lethargically. “Don’t know what it’s about, sir, but you’re to come this way please.” He led the way to the staff only door, just as Dominic Richards opened it. “Oh, this is the Mr Tinlow you were asking for.” he told him, and feeling his duty done, returned to his post.

“Mr Tinlow, I’m Richards. Please come with me.”

“What’s going on?” asked Anthony, starting to worry what sort of trouble Felicity could have got herself into that meant his being summoned by a security guard.

“It’s your wife Mr Tinlow,” explained Dominic, “she’s having a baby.”

“Yes, I know that,” answered Anthony, then suddenly the meaning of what was said sunk in.

“You mean she’s having it now?”

“Yes sir! In here sir.” Dominic opened the door to the staff sitting room and ushered him in.

“Anthony!” Felicity exclaimed as she saw him. “Oh, Anthony, I’m so glad you’ve come.”

Oblivious to everyone else in the room, Anthony was at her side immediately, barely noticing Juliette as she moved out of his way. “Are you ok, sweetheart?”

“The baby’s coming.” she answered, “but I’m fine.” A statement that was immediately contradicted as she cried out with the pain of another contraction. Anthony bent over her in concern.

“You’re doing fine Fliss,” came an encouraging voice that sounded vaguely familiar to Anthony. “Remember, don’t push until I tell you to.”

Anthony looked around “Kester! what are you doing here?”

“Right now, I’m about to deliver your baby!” answered Kester. “Before that I was shopping for Ailie’s birthday present.”

Felicity looked up, distracted for a moment. “But Kez, Ailie’s birthday was two and a half weeks ago!”

Kester looked sheepish. “I know!” He then became all doctor again as Dominic returned with a pile of linens. “Miss Gray, could you help me with these towels please. And Anthony – you stay there, but help to lift Fliss when I say.”

Sorry, Liz, had forgotten that it was Catherine who said that. I can convince my boyfriend that somebody's birthday is on another nearby date to the date it actually is - and he takes my word for it! I tell him the truth after a few minutes but it shows how good he is at remembering birthdays!

An altercation could be heard outside the door.

“I’m sorry sir, you can’t go in there.”

“Don’t be ridiculous man, of course I can go in there.”

“But there’s a lady in there having a baby, sir, Miss Gray said to let nobody in.”

“Miss Gray’s in there is she? Well I shall have to have words with her about this. We can’t have people having babies in our store. Now let me past at once.”

“I’m sorry sir, but you can’t disturb them.”

“Don’t be so preposterous.”

“It’s Mr Blake, the manager.” said Juliette and she went to the door. “You’d better let him in Dominic,” she said with a sigh. “I’m sorry sir, but there was nowhere else to bring the lady, and I didn’t think you’d want her to give birth on the shop floor.”

“I don’t want her to give birth anywhere!” he exclaimed. “She’s probably just trying it on to get some attention, and I won’t have it!”

“Trying it on!” muttered Felicity to Anthony “I’d like to see him doing this and calling it ‘trying it on’! If I could get up I’d hit him! owwwwwwwwwwwww!” Her cry of pain interrupted her threat of violence.

“Okay Fliss, hang on a bit longer, you’re almost there.” Kester was ignoring everything else going on around him and concentrating on the task at hand.

“Madam, this is not the place for this.” said Mr Blake, pushing Juliette out of his way and coming across the room. Then as he saw for the first time what was happening his face turned a delicate shade of green and he swayed slightly. “Oh!” He was grateful for Juliette’s steadying hand at his elbow as she swung him away from the sight and propelled him towards the door. “On second thoughts, I shall leave you in charge here Miss Gray. You have my authority to make use of anything you might need in the store.” Juliette delivered him into Dominic’s arms and returned to the sofa.

“Have a sit down sir, you’ll feel much better for that. And perhaps a cup of tea?”

“I… thank you… I think a whisky might be more appropriate. And Richards” there was an attempt to inject some authority back into the tone “make sure nobody goes into that room.”

With special thanks to Ally - supplier of names for all kinds of situations, for a very modest fee Wink

It wasn’t long before Kester was wrapping the new baby in a soft towel and handing her to Felicity.

“There you go Fliss,” he said, “your daughter.”

Felicity looked at the tiny bundle in her arms, and felt a wave of love wash over her. “Oh Anthony, isn’t she perfect!” she exclaimed.

Anthony nodded, not trusting himself to speak for a moment, then cleared his throat. “she’s beautiful.” he agreed, reaching out to gently touch a pink cheek. “Our daughter.” he tightened his arm around Felicity and dropped a kiss on her sweat-soaked hair. “Thank you, darling.”

Juliette went to the door to give the good news to Dominic. “It’s a girl.” She told him, “Dr Russell’s just finishing up and then you can come in and see her.” She hurried back to assist Kester.

“We’ll get you to hospital shortly to get you and the baby checked over.” Kester told Felicity as he finished washing his hands. “You look fine to me, but as she’s a little early it’s probably a good idea.”

Felicity looked up from her daughter briefly. “Thank you. And thanks for being here Kez – and Juliette and Dominic – I don’t know what I’d have done without you all.”

“I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.” said Dominic with a grin, as he produced a camera borrowed from the photographic department and took some pictures of the baby.

“So,” added Kester, “Do you have a name for this little mite?”

Felicity’s eyes met Anthony’s. “Emilia,” she said, “Emilia Juliette.”

“Mum!” Mollie raced out of the house to greet her mother as she came up the path. “You’ve been ages! Uncle Anthony phoned.”

“Felicity?” Len asked, a look of worry passing over her face.

“She’s had the baby. Oh mum can’t we go to England for half-term I so want to see her while she’s still tiny.”

“We’ll see.” answered Len, “What did Uncle Anthony say?”

“He said Auntie Felicity had the baby this afternoon, it’s a girl. She’s called Emilia Juliette and she’s got all her fingers and toes. Oh and Mum, just think how exciting, she didn’t have the baby in a hospital, she was in a shop!”

… …

Jo hung up the telephone as Jack came to find out what the shrieks were about. She spun around to face him, a huge smile on her face.

“Felicity’s had a girl.” she told him. “at about 2.00 this afternoon. Oh and Jack, you’ll never guess who delivered her!”

Felix hung up the phone and returned to his guest, a broad smile on his face. “Felicity, my twin, has just had her baby.” he told her.

“Oh how lovely. A boy or a girl?”

“A girl. She’s a little early but everything’s fine apparently.”

“That’s good.” Ellie smiled, “So you’re Uncle Felix now?”

“Oh I’m Uncle Felix several times over already.” he told her “But it still feels special each time. I can’t stop smiling.”

“I can see that.” she answered. “I’m very pleased for you Felix.”

… …

“We have another niece.” Catherine returned to the living room and announced the news to Charles, James and Denise. “Emilia Juliette, 2.03 this afternoon, 5 lb 11 oz. Felicity and baby both doing well.” she paused “Despite giving birth in a shop.”

“You’re pulling my leg!” protested Charles.

“Oh, no, brother dear, it’s all too true – Apparently even giving birth Felicity doesn’t hang around waiting.”

“But she’s alright?” asked James.

“Absolutely fine – Kester – you know our cousin don’t you – was there and looked after her.

“In that case, this calls for a celebratory drink.” said Charles. “James you’re nearer than me, you know where the glasses are.”

“There’s some champagne left from Mike’s wedding – I’ll go and get it, it won’t be cold but that won’t matter.” Catherine hurried off to find a bottle, and returned shortly, holding it out. “One of you had better open this.” she said “I’ll only smash things and spill it everywhere.”

“I’ll do it.” said James, taking the bottle from her, “Oh and Charles – you owe me 10 francs I believe!”

“Pippa! Call for you.”

Phil Maynard looked up from the mirror where she was checking her make-up. “I’ll be there in a sec. Hang on.” she replied, and put down the eyeshadow. Making her way out of her dressing room to the busy room beyond she picked up the receiver “hello?” She put one hand over her ear so she could hear what was being said among the pre-concert bustle. Anybody watching her saw her do a little skip and a grin spread from ear to ear, before she hung up and hurried back to her dressing room. A quarter of an hour later, she emerged with a piece of paper, which she handed to somebody “Get this to the band please – and tell them the tune from A Love Like Ours but slower and to go easy on the bass and drums.”

Shortly after, Pippa bounded onto the platform and up to the microphone. “Hello everybody, thank you for coming.” She waited a moment for the cheers to subside. “There was a special arrival into the world this afternoon, so I’m going to start with something just for her.” she turned and nodded to the band, waited for the introduction, then her low, velvety voice could be heard singing her hastily written words.

“Precious child
I’m filled with wonder…”

… …

Mike heard Laura’s voice as he opened the front door. “But she’s all alright … Oh, Anthony, that’s wonderful news. I’m so pleased for you both. … Yes, I’ll tell Mike as soon as he gets in. … Give Felicity our love won’t you … Bye.”

She hung up the phone and turned to see him standing there. “Oh Mike, that was Anthony. Felicity has had the baby – a little girl.” she gave him a welcome home kiss “Isn’t that great news.”

“The best.” Mike returned the hug. “Now come on, tell me all those details you women like to reel off, and we mere men never remember.”

Laura laughed and passed on the information she had received from Anthony. “Do you want to tell the twins? They’ll be thrilled to have another cousin. They’re in the front room playing snap. I’ll just go and get the supper on.”

As Mike headed for the front room she turned towards the kitchen, then back again as something caught her eye. “Mike! You’re limping!”

Mike paused, his hand on the door. “Oh yes,” he said dismissively, “I had a bit of a knock earlier, but I’m fine.” He met her concerned look with a calm one.

“What happened?” Laura’s voice was full of worry.

“I’ll tell you about it later. Let me give Quim and Bella the good news, and we’ll have supper and get them to bed. There’s nothing to worry about.”

“Are you sure?”

“Sweetheart, don’t worry so much, you know I limp slightly when I’ve done a bit too much and tired it, that’s all it is.” He wasn’t going to tell her that it hurt much more than mere tiredness, she was worried enough as it is. “Come on, let’s give the twins the news together, supper can wait a little longer, can’t it?” he held out his hand to her and she went and took it, not at all fooled by his disclaimer and determined to go into it later.

In the meantime, two small children were very excited at the news of their new cousin. “How did the baby get out of Aunty Flisty’s tummy, Daddy?” asked Quim.

“Erm… well…” Mike stuttered and looked helplessly at Laura who took pity on him.

“The doctor helps the baby to come out.” she explained.

“A doctor like you and Uncle Reg?” asked Bella

“And Uncle F’lix and Grandpapa and Auntie Margot? They’re all doctors too.” added Quim.

“I know that!” Bella told him. “But Uncle Reg and Mummy-Laura helped Daddy’s leg get better, so they might have helped Auntie Flisty’s baby too.”

“Well it wasn’t me or Uncle Reg.”

“No it was Cousin Kez.” Mike told them. “He helped Auntie Felicity.”

“Will he help Mummy-Laura too?” asked Bella.

“Mummy-Laura doesn’t need a doctor.” Mike said.

“But when she has a baby in her tummy she will.” Quim argued. “And then we can have a baby brother. When will you put a baby in your tummy?” he turned to Laura with the question.

“Well, I can’t decide that,” Laura said, “the baby will choose when it wants to be in my tummy.” She kept quiet about the secret hope she hadn’t yet shared with Mike. “Now, I’m going to go and get supper, but how about tomorrow we make some cards for you to send to Auntie Felicity and Uncle Anthony and baby Emilia?”

*wonders what Lesley's horrible thought is*

“Right Mr Maynard, let’s hear what happened to your leg.” The twins were fast asleep and Laura returned to join Mike on the sofa.

“Yes, Dr Maynard!” answered Mike promptly, then added. “I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about. I just got nearly bowled over by a young lad not looking where he was going, that was all.”

“All?” asked Laura, raising her eyebrows.

“Okay, he barrelled into my leg and nearly knocked me off balance. I staggered and hurt my leg a little, but it’s not nearly so bad now, honestly.” He looked at her and smiled. “You’re not going to be satisfied until you’ve had a look at it, are you?”

“I just want to be sure you’re ok.”

“I know sweetheart – let’s put your mind at rest shall we?”

“The bed’s probably the best place – do you want to undress and lie down and I’ll get my bag and be up in a minute.”

Mike grinned wickedly. “Now there’s an invitation.”

“Mi - chael!” Laura exclaimed in mock scandalisation, then, laughing (as he'd intended), got up to help him off the sofa.

Laura bent over Mike's leg, examining it intently, asking him to flex and rotate his ankle, gently touching and moving it, and asking if it hurt, her eyes flicking to his face to see if he was answering the truth.

It looked sore and bruised, but there was no long-term damage, Laura decided after she had finished her examination.

“You will be careful and rest it for the next few days won’ t you.” she asked him as she straightened up. “I know I’m being a fusspot, but…”

“I know – you love me.” Mike finished for her. “I love you too, and if it were the other way around I’d be just as worried about you.”

“You would?”

“Of course I would!.” Mike reached for her wrist and tugged her down onto the bed next to him. “And you’d tell me if there was anything to worry about wouldn’t you?” She didn’t answer. “Laura, sweetheart, is there something to worry about?”

She looked at him. “Not to worry about. And I’m not certain yet, it’s too soon to say.”

“But there’s something going on.” He remembered a look he had seen on her face when she was talking to the twins earlier. “Laura, are you… I mean do you think you’re… Are we going to have…”

“A baby.” She finished the sentence for him. “I don’t know for sure yet, but maybe.”

“Oh, Laura!” Mike was overjoyed at the possibility. He pulled her close into his arms. “Laura!” he murmured, smiling against her lips.

Two days later Mike woke up early in the morning to find himself alone in bed. The space next to him was cold, so Laura must have been gone for a while. A quick look at the clock showed it was not yet 4 o’clock. He stuffed his feet into his slippers and made his way to check on the twins, but discovered they were both sleeping sweetly. As he pulled the bedroom door to behind him he heard a snuffling and followed the sound down the stairs. Laura was sitting on the bottom step, hugging her knees. Carefully stretching out his leg, Mike sat down next to her and put his arm around her.

“Laura? What’s the matter?”

Laura blew her nose. “I’m just being silly.”

“It can’t be that silly if it’s got you down here at this time in the morning. Won’t you tell me about it?” He pulled her against him so her head rested on his shoulder.

“It’s just – well, I’m not having a baby.”

“You’re not?”

She shook her head. “No. I was wrong. I was just late, that’s all.”

Mike turned so he could put both his arms around her and pull her closer. “Oh, sweetheart.” He could feel her disappointment and wished he knew what to say to comfort her.

“I told you it was silly.” she sniffled again.

“No, you’re not silly.” He assured her. “Come here.” He kissed the top of her head and she looked up at him.

“I’m sorry.”

“There’s nothing to be sorry for.” He gently brushed some stray hairs from her cheek.

“Mike?”

“Yes my love?”

“Hold me. Hold me and never let me go.”

They sat there for a long time. Eventually Mike realised she had fallen back asleep, and moving carefully so as not to disturb her, got to his feet with her in his arms and carried her back to bed.

Laura woke in the morning, wondering for a moment why she felt muzzy-headed. Then the familiar ache in her belly reminded her of her disappointment. She lay there for a moment, then gave herself a mental shake. She couldn’t lie around wallowing all day. She turned over and saw Mike still sleeping next to her.

She smiled, suddenly realising how much she had to be thankful for. She had a wonderful loving husband, she couldn’t love the twins more if they were her own. And it was early days yet – there was plenty of time to have babies.

Mike’s eyes flickered open as she snuggled close and hugged him tightly. “Thank you.” She said

“What for?” he asked bewildered.

“For being you. For loving me.”

“Same to you.” He hugged her back. “Are you ok?”

“I’m going to be ok.” She assured him, as the door open and Quim and Bella ran into the room and climbed on the bed for their morning family hug.

“Where would you like to go today?”

“Where do you suggest?”

“Well we could walk down to the lake, or up to the summit, or I could show you Auntie Robin’s cave…”

“Auntie Robin’s cave? Is that one of the local legends you’ve not told me yet?”

“Well, not exactly a local legend, although a bit of a family one.”

“Well, let’s go there and you can tell me the story on the way.”

Felix had already entranced Ellie over the last couple of weeks with the tales of how Tiernsee became a lake, and some of the legends he had learnt growing up in the Oberland – the destruction of Taesch, where only the poor widow who had taken in the beggar turned away from every other house and giving him her own bed for the night, had survived. The Smith of Rumpelbach, who was so successful in tricking the devil he was turned away from Hades and then tricked St Peter into letting him through the gates of Heaven. Felix had inherited his mother’s gift for storytelling and had captivated his audience. Now Ellie thrilled to the tale of how Auntie Rob had discovered the cave on the Sonnalpe, how a group of pupils from the school had gone to hid the Peace League (“I’ll explain bit more about that later”) there and that trip had led to the engagement of his parents.

“Oh, that’s so romantic.”

“Yes, and you know, they’re still just like that after all these years.”

“That must be wonderful.” And so different from her own parents.

Then Felix had continued with how the cave had been found to be joined up with a passage from the church in Spartz, and his mother, her schoolfriends and Auntie Nell had used it to escape after helping a Jew in Spartz after the Anschluss and had then had to flee the country, escaping into Switzerland with Papa and Uncle Gottfried.

“That must have been terrifying.”

“Yes, but Mamma always said she got Nancy meets a Nazi from it, so it wasn’t wasted.”

Nancy meets a Nazi? But surely that’s … oh what’s her name … it’ll come to me in a minute.”

“Josephine M Bettany?”

“That’s her.”

“Yes, that’s Mamma.”

“You’re kidding?! I’ve read loads of her books – my aunt collected them when she was growing up and passed them on to me. I’ve still got them in a box somewhere.”

“I’ve got all of them. She still writes now you know.”

“Really? No I didn’t know.”

“Oh yes, although her style’s changed quite a bit since Nancy – she has to keep up with the times after all.”

“Oh, wow! I’d love to see what some of her recent books are like.”

“Well, I’ll lend you some then if you like. We all get copies.”

“Thanks.” They stopped talking as Felix switched on his torch and led the way into the passage leading to the cave.

Thinking back over the day, Ellie smiled to herself. It had been a wonderful day out. Felix was charming company, witty, amusing and, despite his slightly old-fashioned gentleman’s manners, treated her as his equal.

It would be difficult not to fall in love with him, she mused, but she mustn’t. She couldn’t stay here forever and his life, his work, was here. Anything between them was doomed from the start.

Still, it would do no harm to be friends with him, would it?

Felix found himself thinking more and more about Ellie as the days passed. Her laughter echoed in his dreams, the memory of her smile would come on him unbidden. He found himself thinking about what she said, or how she’d listened as he’d told her about his research, her eyes full of interest.

He had to be careful, he warned himself. He must take things slowly and carefully. But he couldn’t help hoping. And the more time he spent in her company, the more he saw cause to hope, and the more he knew he had fallen in love.

Okay, here's a slightly longer update - and more to come later if I get the chance!

“Catherine?”

“Hmmmmmmm?”

“Catherine, you’re not really listening.”

“Sorry, I was thinking.” It was a quiet evening in the chalet in Laustadt. Charles had gone away on assignment and James had dropped in to keep Catherine company for a few hours.

“Well, if you could just manage to spare some of your brainpower for me?”

“Sorry, James. Of course.” Catherine turned her full attention on him. “What is it?”

“Well, it’s Denise?”

“What about her?” Denise and James had been dating for 8 months now, as far as Catherine knew, the longest he had ever had a girlfriend for – she had even begun to wonder if she had misjudged the situation and Charles had been right after all. Now, she expected to be asked for advice on – no it couldn’t be birthday present, she had done that a while ago – she expected to be asked advice on some aspect of their relationship anyway and it could be anything from which restaurant she thought he should take her to for dinner to how he could make it up to her that he hadn’t noticed she’d had her hair cut, and she settled herself to listen.

Having started the conversation, James was rather slow to continue, and there was a long pause before he finally spoke.

Well since some of you ask so nicely, and others are uttering dire threats... *sigh* Wink

“Well, she’s, er, she’s dumped me.”

“Oh, James. I’m really sorry. What happened?”

“She told me I was shallow, egotistical, inconsiderate and selfish, and she wasn’t going to waste another second on me when she could be with somebody who really appreciated her.”

“Good grief! What on earth did you do?” Catherine was completely surprised. She hadn’t seen this coming at all – Denise had always seemed quite happy with James, and had even told Catherine that much only a week ago.

“It seems I didn’t show my appreciation of her enough and took her for granted.”

“Do you think you did?”

“Well, I didn’t think I did, but it seems Jacques Froissart is willing to send her roses and shower her with other gifts. And has been doing so for some time.”

“She was two-timing you?” Catherine could barely believe it. Denise had seemed so nice and genuine.

“Apparently so.” James’ tone was slightly bitter. He didn’t mention that Denise had made accusations about Catherine, they were completely ridiculous and would only upset her. He made an attempt to shrug it off. “Oh well! Plenty more fish in the sea.”

“James!”

“What?”

“Women are not fish! And surely you can’t replace her in your life just like that!?” it was an argument she’d had with him after he had split with various other girls before he had met Denise.

“Whyever not?” now he sounded mildly amused at her outrage.

“Well, we’re all different for a start – you can’t just remove one woman from your life and slot another one right in the gap as if we’re all identical.”

“Believe me, there’s not a lot of difference between one woman and the next.”

Catherine glared at him. “I can’t believe you said that!”

“But it’s true. Seen one woman, seen ‘em all.”

“Well, thanks a lot! As a woman I find that highly insulting.”

“But I didn’t mean you – you don’t count.”

“I don’t count?” A tiny, detached corner of Catherine’s mind wondered just how big a hole James was going to dig himself.

“No, of course not, you’re not a woman.” Obviously a very big hole.

“I’m not a woman?” she asked, slowly and ominously.

“No, well, yes,” James wondered just how he had got himself in this predicament. “I mean, yes, you are female, but I don’t see you as a woman.”

“Just out of interest, what do you see me as if not a woman?”

“Well, you’re my friend of course?”

“And how are those two things exclusive?” Her sense of humour was getting the better of her, but she was determined not to let him off the hook yet.

“Well, I don’t have any women friends.”

“Except me?”

“Yes, except you, but you’re not like other women. You’re sensible and you don’t have any expectations of me.”

“That doesn’t stop me from being a woman – not last time I looked, anyway.”

“Okay, okay, I give in!” James surrendered. Somehow he was feeling better. Catherine could always cheer him up. “Now how would this woman feel about being thrashed in a game of chess?”

“This woman is going to thrash you!”

“And that’s check-mate” she declared some time later. James studied the board intently then admitted defeat. “Coffee?” Catherine offered, getting to her feet.

“Yes, please.” James collected up the pieces and put them away as she went out to the kitchen. He followed her out there and leant against the side as the kettle boiled.

“Am I a shallow, egotistical, inconsiderate and selfish?” he asked.

Catherine looked at him. “No of course not. Look how you’ve been there for me over the two and half years – you’d hardly have done that if you were all those.”

“But I’m a doctor – that’s my job.”

“James, what you have done for me has gone far above and beyond the call of duty as a doctor, or even as a friend. You’ve been considerate, selfless, understanding and caring. And apart from me – you’ve always tried to make Denise happy, you’ve been generous and considerate to her, she’s never complained about how you’ve treated her, has she, you’ve been a good friend to Charles, you helped Frau Eislinge when she nearly got turned out of her home – don’t deny it, I know it was you – and you’re respected by everybody for miles around and not just because you’re a doctor.” She poured out the coffee as she finished speaking and put the cups on a tray and reached for a tin of biscuits.

“Thanks Catherine.” James picked up the tray and carried it back through to the sitting room. “What would I do without you?”

“Well, let me see,” laughed Catherine, “you’d fall into a pit of gloom, you’d have to do your own crosswords instead of finishing off mine and you’d probably win at chess more often.” She dodged the cushion tossed at her, picked it up and threw it accurately back, then gave him a smug grin before adding virtuously “No throwing things while there’s coffee around.”

Fran – as you asked so nicely Wink

Felicity settled Emilia in her cot and stood there gazing at her. She felt she would never get tired of looking at the miracle that was her baby daughter. Every day there was something new to see in her.

Eventually, satisfied that Emilia was fast asleep, she tiptoed from the room and sank down onto the sofa next to Anthony with a sigh of contentment. “All settled?” he asked with a smile.

“Sleeping like an angel.” she confirmed, only to be belied a second later by a wail from the nursery. “Well, she seemed to be anyway.” She started to get up, but Anthony put out his hand to stop her.

“I’ll go. You rest for a few minutes.” He got up and returned a few minutes later with Emilia in his arms, talking to her in a soft voice.

Felicity watched him, unable to stop smiling at the nonsense he was whispering to their daughter, and was overwhelmed with happiness. Who could possibly ask for more from life?

I hope James and Catherine will get together soon. Couldn't James have just said that Denise didn't things were working out between them? It made me laugh when James was digging himself out of a hole.

That was a lovely scene between Felicity, Anthony and Emilia. It's nice to see Anthony isn't shirking his responsibilities.

OK - Denise is out of the picture, so please could James see what has been staring him in the face for so long with Catherine? Yes, I know all about the proprieties (or otherwise) of doctor/patient involvement, but I don't *think* James is still Catherine's treating doctor, is he?

The following evening Juliette, now firm friends with Felicity, arrived to stay for the weekend. Felicity welcomed her warmly and showed her into the little guest room, leaving her to freshen up from the journey before finding her way back downstairs to reacquaint herself with Emilia.

“Oh, I can’t believe she’s grown so much!” she exclaimed. “Even though she’s so tiny still.”

“I know,” agreed Felicity, scooping Emilia off her blanket on the floor and depositing her into Juliette’s arms. “Here you are, have a cuddle.”

Emilia blinked up at Juliette with wide blue eyes, not in the least perturbed at being passed around. “Hello gorgeous,” said Juliette softly, “hello. Have you been a good girl for Mummy and Daddy? Have you, now?”

“Yes, she’s been fairly good.” Felicity smiled, “although she has her moments – sleeping through the night isn’t one of her gifts, is it precious?” she didn’t sound as if she minded. “I hope she doesn’t disturb you while you’re here.”

“Oh, don’t worry about it. She can’t be noisier than my neighbours” replied Juliette not taking her eyes off Emilia. “Oh, isn’t she just perfect!”

“Well we think so,” agreed Anthony, hearing her as he came into the room and kissing Felicity hello, “But then we’re rather biased!”

“Oh no, not biased at all, she’s beautiful.”

“This weekend is just what I needed.” Juliette confided to Felicity on Saturday afternoon as Emilia was being fed. Anthony was in his study writing, leaving the girls to have a good natter. “Getting away from everything, and having good company.”

“Well, you know you’re welcome here any time you need to get away from things – no questions asked if you don’t want them.”

“Thanks Felicity,” answered Juliette. “It’s so peaceful here – you know I mentioned on the phone my neighbours were noisy?”

“Well, I could hear for myself on the phone that your neighbours were noisy. Have they got worse?”

“Maybe I’m imaging it, but it seems to be louder and it’s certainly later and later at night.”

“Can’t you ask them to turn it down?”

“Well, I’ve tried that already, and I don’t really know what else to do. There’s three of them that live there as far as I can work out, but there’s always more guys hanging around and… well it’s silly, but I feel rather intimidated by them.”

“That’s not silly at all,” Felicity reassured her. “You…” the doorbell interrupted her. “Here, can you wind Emilia for me, that’s probably the milkman wanting paying.” She got to her feet and handed the now-fed baby over to her friend.

Juliette held Emilia to her shoulder, rubbing and patting her back to bring up wind, finding comfort in the cuddling. She heard an exclamation of surprise from the hallway and voices, but took no notice, lost in her own little world, until she heard Felicity open the door behind her and come back into the room with somebody following her.

“Oh, I’m sorry Fliss, I didn’t realise you already had a visitor.” She heard a male voice, a vaguely familiar voice, say, and looked up as they came into view.

“That’s ok – you know Juliette anyway, don’t you?”

Kester Russell looked at the woman cradling the baby. She was casually dressed in jeans and sweater, with a posset of milk slowly sinking into one sleeve, no make up, and her hair loose around her shoulders, instead of carefully made up and wearing a smart suit, but he would have recognised her anywhere. “Well I don’t think we were every properly introduced.” He smiled.

She smiled back, “I think we were rather preoccupied at the time. Oh good girl” she added as Emilia burped, and returned her attention to the baby.

Kester watched her and suddenly felt a hitherto unknown longing for domesticity.

“From that day on the sun has never cried again, and I don’t think he ever will. Do you?” Laura read the last line of the book, and closed it after Bella and Quim had finished looking at the last picture. “Ok, Bella, do you want to put that back on the shelf.”

“Another story?” asked Quim, who couldn’t get enough of books.

“Not now, Quim, I must go and do some baking ready for Grandmamma and Grandpapa’s visit.”

“Can we help Mummy-Laura?” asked Bella eagerly.

Laura looked at them consideringly. “Well, I don’t see why not. Come on then. You must wash your hands properly before we start.”

Mike arrived home to hear giggles emerging from the kitchen and after hanging up his coat, he went to investigate.

Nobody noticed him for a few minutes as he stood in the kitchen doorway, smiling at the goings on.

With a serious frown of concentration on his face, Quim was standing on a chair at the kitchen table stirring something in a bowl, most of the contents of which now seemed to have been emptied over the table or as he now saw, sneaking their way into his mouth on his finger.

Bella was carefully touching a sponge cake on the cooling rack “it’s not hot now Mummy” she announced, leaving the imprint of her fingers behind on the once-level surface.

Laura straightened up from bending over in front of the oven, a tray of biscuits in each oven-gloved hand, one set rather more cooked than the other.

“Those are burnt.” Bella told her, looking at them critically.

“They’re not really burnt. No don’t touch them darling they’re hot. Just a little bit well-cooked. Maybe we won’t give these ones to Grandmamma and grandpapa.”

Quim looked at the biscuits as Laura started to slide them off onto the cooling rack. “Daddy will eat them.” He told her. “Daddy eats anything.”

“He does indeed.” Mike agreed, coming into the room.

“Daddy!” Bella ran across to give him a hug, and Quim scrambled down from the chair, wooden spoon still in hand, to come for his kiss. Slightly stickier, Mike stood up from their embraces.

“Let me inspect these biscuits then.” He said, crossing the room to Laura’s side. “Those look delicious.” He declared, “I can’t wait to try them when they’ve cooled down.”

“You don’t have to eat them you know.”

“Oh, no, I have a reputation to keep up now.”

“Well, let them cool properly before you try,” she batted his hand away. “Here, if you must have something have one of Bella’s chocolate crispies.”

“You made chocolate crispies?” Mike turned to ask his daughter.

“I’m making a cake.” Quim told him importantly, as Bella went to select one of her crispies for him.

“Well I think Grandmamma and Grandpapa will be very impressed with all the baking you’ve done for them. Now, is there anything I can do to help with all this.”

“Yes, the washing up.” Laura looked up from where she was helping Quim spoon the contents of his bowl into a baking tin; green eyes full of laughter, a smudge of cocoa on her cheek and cake mixture clinging to her hair. Mike’s heart did flip flops again as he looked at her. If he wasn’t already madly in love with her, he thought, he would have fallen at that moment.

Chelsea - chocolate crispies (we always called them cracklets at home, but nobody else ever seems to know what I'm talking about)

bring saucepan of water to boil
sit bowl containing chocolate in top of saucepan and turn down to simmer
when chocolate has melted stir in rice krispies until coated
spoon into individual cases and leave to set

If you still don't know what I'm talking about, let me know and I'll make some for you and bring them to the gather (if nobody else is)!

Or you can melt the chocolate in the microwave, or use cornflakes instead of rice crispies, or shredded wheat (which makes a good birds nest cake for mini eggs).

“Felicity, your cousin works miracles.” Felicity and Juliette were having their regular weekly catch-up session on the phone.

“Kester?”

“Yes, you know we were talking about my noisy neighbours last weekend.”

“Yes of course,” The interrupted conversation had been picked up later on when Anthony had been appealed to for advice, and Juliette had explained the situation again from the beginning.

“Well, Kester came round a few days ago with the book on Cromwell he said he’d lend to me. And he passed two of the guys in the corridor – I don’t know what he said, but the music has stopped at 11.30 smart every night since then. And they even step out of my way instead of me having to try to squeeze past when I go by a group of them in the corridor.”

“Oh, that must be so much nicer for you.” Felicity replied. “I wonder what he said?”

“Probably something that he wouldn’t repeat for your or Juliette’s benefit.” Anthony told her when she repeated the question to him later that evening. “I’m glad it was effective.”

“You knew he was planning to do something, didn’t you?” Felicity turned suspiciously on him.

“We did discuss what might work.” Anthony admitted. “He seemed quite concerned about her.”

“Really?” Anthony saw the speculative gleam come into Felicity’s eyes.

“Now, come on Fliss, remember you swore never to matchmake again.”

“I wasn’t matchmaking!” she protested. “Well, maybe only a little bit. But there’s nothing wrong with wanting people to be happy is there?”

“Nothing at all, but these things tend to progress better without any interference.”

“Oh, alright! I’m not going to do anything.” She got up and reached for his empty coffee cup. “You spoil all my fun!”

Anthony gently grasped her wrist and pulled her into his lap. “All of it?” he asked.

“Well,” she conceded, her arms encircling his neck, “Maybe not all.”

Ellie waited in the alcove just inside the entrance of the San. Felix was due to finish at lunchtime and they were going to Spartz for the afternoon. There was a slightly chilly wind outside, which had driven her inside to wait, and she leant against the wall. Looking at her watch she realised she was slightly early.

Standing there she was unnoticed by the two nurses passing through the hallway.

“Of course there’s Dr Maynard, he’s single, but you’ve not got a hope there.”

“Oh, why not?”

“Everybody knows he’s desperately in love with his sister-in-law.”

“Really?”

“Oh yes, he was dead keen on her, but she turned him down for his brother. It was a couple of years ago, and he’s never got over her – I think she leads him on to be honest, likes having him adore her from afar and encourages it. It’s not fair really – she’s got his brother, and there’s no chance for the rest of us while she keeps him hanging on like that…” the voices trailed off as the nurses went through the double doors into the main wing.

Ellie stood stock still in the shadows. Felix was in love with his sister-in-law. Well that meant he was safe, just saw her as a friend, and wouldn’t be hurt when she left. She told herself it was just because he was her friend and didn’t like to think of him hurting that the knowledge depressed her. Nothing else. She talked to herself firmly, and by the time Felix emerged into the lobby she was able to meet him with a smile, with no trace of her disappointment.

“And that’s a triple-word score, so that gets me 78 points” said Charles triumphantly.

“How come you always get those?” demanded James.

“Natural talent, my friend” grinned Charles, “a gift beyond price.”

James snorted “yeah right!”

Catherine ignored the squabblers and laid out her letters. “22 for me.” She said as she finished.

“Now you’ve blocked me from going where I was going to go!” exclaimed James. “Are you two plotting together to defeat me?”

“Not at all!”

“Would we do a thing like that?!”

“You did in Monopoly last time.”

“We just played by the rules,” Catherine pointed out. “It’s not our fault if you were too slow to collect your rent.”

“I still think you ganged up on me.”

“Don’t need to – could still beat you anyway!”

“Oh yeah! And who’s winning this game?”

Catherine reached across and picked up the score sheet from in front of Charles. She scanned it for a moment “Neither of us,” she told him, “but I’m not losing either!”

“You think I’m relying on your adding up?” James tweaked the paper from her fingers and studied it himself, then tossed it back down on the table. “Well, okay, but the game's not over yet, things can change.”

“Yes, I might beat Charles as well.”

“Such modesty!”

“Oh I know, it’s one of my many virtues. Along with losing graciously, unlike some people.”

“Well as you’re so gracious about it, why don’t you do it more often?”

“Because you need the practice of course! That’s why I’m kind enough to keep beating you!”

“You call that kind?”

“You’d rather know I was letting you win?”

“No, I’d rather just win all the time.”

“Better find somebody else to play with then.”

“No, I’ll stick with you, I’m sure all this humiliation must be good for me. Make me a better person or something.”

“Well we’ve got our work cut out for us then haven’t we?!”

Charles sat quietly back in his chair, watching them laughing and teasing each other, smiling to himself, as realisation slowly dawned on him.

Felix and Ellie wandered along the lakeside. The autumn leaves had fallen and there was a chill in the air that promised winter was close, but the sun was shining, as if trying to convince itself that summer wasn’t only a memory.

“I’m going to be sorry to leave, it’s so beautiful and peaceful here.” Ellie commented, breaking the comfortable silence. It was the most beautiful place she’d ever seen, but it wasn’t the thought of saying goodbye to the Tirol that filled her with sadness.

“I love it here when the tourists have gone.” Felix told her, trying not to show the disappointment he had felt each time she had recently mentioned she would be going soon. “Well, actually I love it all year round, tourists or not, but there’s something so serene about it at this time of year, as if the whole place is relaxing ready for hibernation.”

“What’s it like in winter?”

“Just as beautiful, but in a completely different way. The ice makes the lake black, and when the sun shines it reflects off the snow in dazzling sparkles and rainbows. It’s so cold, but not damp and foggy like England, it’s a crisp clear cold that makes you gasp at the first breath of outdoor air, but not want to go indoors. Everything is so quiet, muffled by the snow, and it’s like – well Mamma used to call it ‘Christmas card land’ when she was a little girl – I’m sure you know what I mean.”

“It sounds amazing. I’d love to see it.”

“There’s nothing like it. Can’t you stay a little longer?”

“Well, maybe I’ll stay long enough to see it.” She initially hadn’t mean to spend more than a few weeks here, but she had no reason to rush back, so why not enjoy his company a little longer.

“It’ll be worth it.” Felix told her, his heart singing.

Edited for Freudian slip - thanks Chelsea

Sorry Chelsea - that was a slip by the typist, not by Felix!

Laden with packages, Catherine and James left the shop.

“Is that it?” he asked hopefully.

“I’ve barely started.” Catherine told him. “You surely don’t think that lot is Christmas presents for all my family do you?”

“Well, no I suppose it’s only a fraction of your family. Well, where to next Madame?” Catherine and Charles had planned to come to Interlaken to do their Christmas shopping, but Charles had been called away on an assignment the day before and had asked James to go with Catherine in his place.

“Let’s go and put these in the car, then we can go to that wonderful toy shop down that side street.” They accordingly packed the presents into the car, then found the toy shop.

By the time she had finished browsing, selected presents for seven nieces and six nephews, and had a toy sword fight with James that had reduced them both to fits of laughter, they were both feeling rather hungry, so after stowing the presents away in the car the found a small patisserie.

The laughter continued over lunch as James amused Catherine with stories of his student days, including a disastrous attempt to impress a date by demonstrating he could walk along the top of a wall despite several pints of beer, that had ended up with him landing ignominiously in a large puddle, fortunately bruising his dignity more than anything else.

Catherine was still laughing at James as they left the patisserie. Then an abrupt change came over her; her body tensed and the colour drained from her cheeks.

“Catherine?” he asked, his voice concern.

“It’s him,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

“Who?” he asked, putting his arm round her shoulders to steady her as she swayed slightly.

“It’s… Eric.” He felt her tremble and tightened his hold, while he looked up to see whom she was talking about. Looking in the window of the next shop along was a young man, handsome and smartly dressed. He looked so respectable it was hard to believe he was the man Catherine had told him about, but he had seen the fear in her eyes and knew she wasn’t mistaken.

Eric turned and saw them. He did a double-take for a moment then smiled and walked closer. “Hello Cecil,” he said, with a smile that James’ fingers itched to remove. James looked at Catherine to see if she would respond, or if he should.

“I’m not Cecil,” she answered.

“Sure you are,” said Eric, “Cecil Maynard, I remember you.”

“My name is Catherine Robertson.” She answered, her voice slightly firmer.

“I’d recognise you anywhere. I was paid to take you out you know. I studied your picture for weeks beforehand, before I ‘accidentally’ bumped into you at that party.”

“As the lady has already told you.” James interrupted, his voice cool. “You have obviously mistaken her for somebody else.”

“How would you know?” asked Eric, “She could have told you anything. She’s Pippa Maynard’s sister didn’t you know. Or maybe you did know and that’s why you’re with her. It’s the only reason anybody would date her. She’s not interesting enough for ...” Thwack!!! his words were curtailed as James’ fist connected with his chin and he staggered backwards.

“Why you…” Eric exclaimed

“Yes?” enquired James politely, pushing Catherine gently back into the patisserie and turning to face him. Eric looked at the six foot of angry muscular male in front of him and thought better of it. With a curse he turned tail and ran. If it hadn’t been for Catherine, James would have pursued him and continued the argument, but her need was greater so he shrugged, rubbed his knuckles and went to find her.

The owner of the patisserie was fussing over her, offering her coffee between a steady stream of ejaculations. She had not heard the words spoken, but she had seen the whole confrontation and it was obvious the young lady had been upset by it. As soon as he could get a word in edgewise, James thanked her for her help and asked her for a glass of water, which she went off to get, still exclaiming to herself.

“Are you ok?” he asked Catherine gently. She shook her head, her eyes not meeting his. “Come on, drink this water, and then I’ll take you home. You can do your shopping another day.” He watched her sip at the water, then leaving a tip on the table he led her back to the car. She acquiesced quietly and he shot a worried glance at her as he started the engine. First thing to do was to get her home; to somewhere she felt safe.

Catherine sat in silence the entire journey. James cast concerned glances at her when he could spare his eyes from the road, but didn’t try to break through the brittle façade of calm.

He parked the car outside the chalet. Catherine sat there, staring unseeingly in front of her, not moving. James got out, ignoring the shopping in the back and went round to open the passenger door. She compliantly got out and he guided her up the path. Taking her bag he searched for her keys, then opened the door and ushered her in.

She remained docile, allowing him to seat her in a chair near the fireplace and tuck a blanket around her, drinking the hot chocolate he brought her, but otherwise remained withdrawn inside herself, deaf to all he said and with that same blank look in her eyes.

There was nothing he could do but wait for her to come out of her retreat. Eventually he led her upstairs and tucked her unresistingly into her bed, where she lay down and closed her eyes like a child. He hoped that the sleep would help and when she woke in the morning the calm exterior would be broken.

He went and made up the bed in the spare room, checked on Catherine, then headed back downstairs and poured himself to a glass of Charles’ scotch.

I might not get online again today, and then am off to the gather, so here's a little bit more.

Long after Catherine was sleeping peacefully in her bed, James sat wide awake, his untouched drink cradled in his hands as he gazed into the glowing embers in the fireplace.

It had been a sudden revelation to him, as his fist had connected with Eric’s chin, that he was filled not only with anger, but with an overwhelming desire to protect Catherine from harm. Not just from that man and at that moment, but to protect her and care for her for always.

For the rest of his life.

He smiled bitterly at the irony of it. He, who had always had his pick of women, had fallen in love with the one woman who would never trust a man again.

James must have dozed off, because he woke with a start when a cry rang through the house. Seconds later, he was up the stairs, knocking on Catherine’s door. “Catherine, are you ok?” The cry came again and he pushed open the door and went in to find her sitting up again, her eyes wide, her whole body trembling. “Catherine?”

She was awake, and she turned to him, her eyes full of unshed tears. “Hold me, please. Keep me safe.” James sat on the edge of the bed and gathered her into his arms, stroking her hair and making soothing sounds. Eventually she stopped shaking, and he started to move away, but she clutched his arm and whispered “Don’t leave me.” So he stayed.

Catherine drifted off into sleep, stilling holding onto James’ arm. Once he was sure she was soundly asleep, he tried to detach her fingers, but she stirred and muttered in her sleep, tightening her grip, so he gave up. Carefully he swung his legs onto the bed and leant back against the headboard. Catherine gave a small sigh and snuggled closer to him, and James resigned himself to a long sleepless night.

Despite his expectations he did eventually fall asleep, his arms still wrapped around her.

Catherine stirred, then felt something restricting her movement and began to panic. She was trapped again.

James felt her struggling and woke, instinctively tightening his arms around her in an attempt to soothe and reassure her. Still in her half-nightmare half-memory Catherine struggled even more and managed to free an arm, which she thrashed around wildly.

“Ow!!” The cry of pain and the release from captivity came at the same time and Catherine awoke fully, sat up, and reached for the light switch. She blinked as her eyes adjusted to the light and she saw James, his hand over one eye as he fluently demonstrated a range of expressive vocabulary.

“Are you ok?” she asked in concern, and gently prised his fingers away. A quick look and she was off the bed and out of the room to return with a cold, damp facecloth. “Here, hold this over it,” she instructed him, folding it into a pad and placing it gently over the injury. Does it hurt much?” she asked as he raised his hand to hold the pad in place.

“Just a little.” answered James, mendaciously. “That’s some punch you’ve got there.” he couldn’t recall a hit that had hurt so much, and as unexpected awakenings went he considered it rather low on the list.

“I’m so sorry,” apologised Catherine. “I was dreaming and I couldn’t move and…” she paused a moment. “What were you doing here anyway?” she asked curiously.

“I came in earlier, when you had a nightmare,” James told her, “You fell asleep holding on to me, or I would have gone, I swear it.”

Catherine apologised again, “I am sorry James, really, I am.”

He smiled at her. “Don’t worry about it. Now, if you’re sure you’ll be ok, maybe I should get back to my room.” He swung his legs off the bed and stood up.

“Please don’t go!” she put a hand on his arm. “I don’t want to be alone.”

“Okay, I’ll stay.” He agreed.

He sat down on the armchair at the foot of the bed, while Catherine curled up on top of the covers on the middle of the bed. For a while there was silence.

“I didn’t think I’d ever see him again.” James looked at her, waiting for her to continue. “I thought I was safe here.”

“Fact is, I’m not going to be safe anywhere, am I? I’ve changed my name, I’m in a different country and I’m still not safe.”

“There’s only one thing to do isn’t there.” She said decidedly

James looked at her startled. Surely she wasn’t going to run away, disappear somewhere? His heart lurched at the thought. Before he could utter a protest, however, she was speaking again.

“I’ve got to go back. To Interlaken first and then further if I need to. To find Eric. I’ve got to face up to him.”

“Are you sure?” asked James, astounded at the courage she showed.

She nodded. “It’s the only way. But I can’t do it alone. Will you,” she swallowed, “will you help me?”

“Of course I will.” He reached out a hand towards her and she took it in hers, feeling his strength flowing into her veins as they sat in silence.

When Charles arrived home and came upstairs late the following morning, he saw them through the open doorway, James in the chair, Catherine curled on the bed, both fast asleep, their hands still clasped.

He smiled to himself and softly pulled the door shut.

“So who is this lady you are giving tours of the district to?” Dr Braun closed the case notes they had just finished discussing and looked at his friend, interested to note the slightly colour briefly touching his cheekbones.

“She’s just a friend on holiday here. I met her when she brought a parcel that had been delivered to her instead of me.”

“Just a friend, eh?” Dr Braun’s eyebrows rose in question.

“Yes.” Felix answered, a little more vehemently than necessary.

“So you wouldn’t mind if I invite her to the New Year’s ball?”

Felix’s face said eloquently that he would mind.

“Relax, I am teasing you. But I think this girl is more than a friend – yes?”

I would like her to be,” admitted Felix, “but I made a mistake once before, Josef, I want to be certain I don’t repeat it.”

“Invite her to the ball,” suggested Josef, “see how the evening goes. And instead of jumping in with a proposal, test the water first this time. You might be pleasantly surprised.”

He himself had seen Felix and Ellie walking alone the alpe and had caught sight of the look on Ellie’s face as she looked at Felix. There was no doubt whatsoever in Josef Braun’s mind that Felix’s feelings were returned by this girl. Hopefully the ball would set them well on the way.

Felix thought over the suggestion. He had nothing to lose by inviting her, he decided. There would be plenty of time once they were at the ball to decide if he should say anything about his feelings.

James awoke with a crick in his neck. Seeing Catherine still fast asleep he carefully slipped his hand from her relaxed grip and crept from the room. After stretching, he decided coffee was the first priority and headed for the kitchen, where he found Charles, just in the act of filling the kettle.

“What timing!” he said as he reached for another mug.

Charles threw a smile over his shoulder. “I wondered when you two would wake up.”

“Nothing happened, Charles.”

“Do you think I need to be told that?” he asked turning to face his friend. “Although, I would like to know how you got that lovely black eye?”

“Oh, well, er, that was an accident.”

“Hmmmm.” Charles looked at him. “The same accident that got you those bruised knuckles by any chance?”

James looked at his hand and flexed it, feeling the bruises for the first time. Then the memory of the satisfaction as his fist had contacted Eric’s chin returned and he gave a grim smile. “No, this one wasn’t an accident.” He said.

Charles passed over a mug of coffee. “Is this one of those ‘you can’t tell me about it’ things?” he asked.

“Well, it’s not really for me to tell.” James said sitting opposite him at the table.

“Ok, I will contain my soul in patience. Just tell me one thing.”

“If I can.”

“Catherine didn’t get caught up in the accident – or the non-accident – did she?”

“Well, not exactly.”

“What’s that supposed to mean! Did she get hurt or didn’t she?”

“She didn’t.” Catherine’s quiet voice from the doorway startled them both. She was slightly pale, but otherwise looked calm and in control.

Chairs scraped as both of them jumped to their feet. “Are you ok?” She could hear the concern in their voices.

“I think I probably came out of it better than James.” She told Charles. “Somebody was bothering me when I was out shopping, so James dealt with him.”

“Your fist?” Charles asked James, who nodded.

“And, well, I accidentally gave him the black eye. How is it this morning?” she asked James.

“Oh, it’s ok.” James told her.

“You’re a bad liar.”

“Well, ok, it does hurt a bit.”

“Let me have another look at it.” She took his face in her hands and turned it so she could examine the bruise.

Charles looked at them, realising he wasn’t going to find out any more of what was going on until Catherine was ready to tell him. Although tired and pale, Catherine didn’t look upset or disturbed. In fact, there was something resolute about the set of her jaw that brought to mind an image of 6-year old Cecil firmly telling Rösli she could do things on her own and determinedly doing them.

Accordingly once she had finished her examination and poured herself some coffee, Charles asked no further questions, and started talking about his trip.

His patience was rewarded a lot sooner than expected, later that afternoon when Catherine and James told him of the events in Interlaken the previous day. He was dubious about Catherine’s plan to track down Eric, but once he realised she was set on it, threw himself into helping.

Using some of his journalist contacts, who had their methods, Charles had tracked down the seedy hotel where Eric was staying within a couple of days. He and James manfully resisted the urge to go and deal with him themselves – tempting though it was, they knew Catherine needed to see him for herself – but they insisted on both going with her into Interlaken.

Catherine’s idea of loitering outside the hotel until Eric appeared actually paid off quite quickly; they had been waiting about 10 minutes when he put in an appearance. Flanked by Charles and James, Catherine approached him, she was taut as a bow string, but stood tall, her face pale but set. “Hello Eric.”

He jumped, he hadn’t seen her until she spoke, and looked at her and her companions apprehensively. He already knew to be wary of James, and Charles didn’t look any less threatening. Like most cowards he had found it easy enough to be aggressive and bullying when he had met her outside the patisserie and thought she was weak and vulnerable. Now he could see she was protected, he began to wish he had left Interlaken that night. He looked around him nervously, wondering if there were other possible protectors waiting to reveal themselves.

“What do you want?” he asked. Beads of perspiration broke out on his forehead.

“I want to know why you did it.” Catherine said.

Somehow the silence of the men either side of her was more menacing than if they’d spoken.

“I’m sorry.” He said, starting to turn away.

A hand on his shoulder stopped him. “That doesn’t answer the lady’s question.” James voice was quiet but uncompromising. “Perhaps we could go somewhere quiet while you explain.”

Eric started babbling, the words tumbling out so fast in his fear that the trio could barely catch them, and soon the picture was complete. He had done some dodgy deals, owed a lot of money, and then he had been approached, asked to lure Cecil Maynard to a quiet place. The money offered for it had been substantial – not that he’d been paid all of it because she’d escaped from them – and so he followed her around, watching her for a couple of weeks before bumping into her, seemingly by accident at a party. She had been easy prey, a note of scorn had entered his voice at that point, but soon disappeared as Charles shifted his stance slightly, easy to fool into thinking that he was keen on her. He didn’t say, but it was clear that he had enjoyed leading her on, having her admire him. Catherine felt sickened when she realised how easily she had been duped, how naïve she had been, but continued to listen as he was encouraged by Charles to say what he knew of the man who had employed him.

When he had told them everything he knew, she looked at him with distaste, seeing him for what he was, a cowardly, bullying, excuse for a man.

She took a deep breath. “Goodbye Eric.” She turned away, feeling that something had somehow been dealt with.

“Is that it?” he looked at them stunned, as they walked off, taking no more notice of him.

Over the other side of the street a man folded his newspaper and started to walk towards him. Eric started to panic. In his experience there was always revenge when you crossed somebody. How Cecil Maynard had got herself those guard dogs he didn’t know, but obviously someone was protecting her. The newspaper man was getting closer. Eric turned and ran. He didn’t go back to the hotel. In fact by the end of the day he had left Switzerland never to return.

Thanks Liz. I'd like an SLOC that comes to life too, please! I'm glad Cecil had James and Charles to protect her, and resolved things with Eric.

Thank you Liz! Really glad she was protected! For a moment I thought she would say she wanted to confront him alone!!

What a pathetic excuse for a human being - can't say man as he doesn't qualify. And I think Catherine has been very restrained , had it been me I think Eric would now not qualify as a man in two other matters!

Thanks Liz.

Catherine was shaking by the time they returned to the car.

“Are you ok?” Charles asked, putting his arm around her shoulders as she leant against the side of the vehicle.

“What on earth did I ever see in him?” she asked, “He’s repulsive.”

“I imagine he can be charming enough when he wants to,” answered James, “And you were lonely and vulnerable, an easy target for someone like him.”

There was a pause while Catherine digested this.

“What do you want to do now?” asked Charles.

Catherine straightened up and put her shoulders back, a gesture that filled both men with admiration.

“Now,” she said decidedly. “I want to go home. And then I want to have a hot bath to wash today off of me. And then, I think I want a glass of your Scotch Charles. A large one.”

Catherine was curled up in an armchair with her hair wrapped in a towel before the subject was raised again. She decided against the Scotch when Charles offered to pour her one, opting for a hot chocolate instead, and was sipping it slowly.

“Thanks for coming with me today. I couldn’t have done it without the two of you.”

“I wish you had let me hit him again.”

She smiled. “I’m sure it would have been very satisfying.”

“Well, yes, but if you’re satisfied with the way things went, then I’ll settle for that.”

“You know what? I am.” She paused. “Now I’ve seen him for what an insignificant miserable worm he is, I almost feel sorry for him.”

“That’s going a bit far!” protested Charles.

“Well, ok, not sorry, but he’s so pitiful. He’s never going to have any power over me again. I just wish I hadn’t let him have it for so long.”

There was another pause. Then she finished her drink and got to her feet.

“I’m going to bed. Good night.” She bent down and kissed Charles on the cheek, then without thinking did the same for James before she left the room.

Thanks for all your kind comments - here's a bit more for you

Both men were lost in their thoughts after she left. Eventually Charles broke the silence.

“Scotch?”

“Thanks.”

Charles poured the drinks and then settled down in the chair again. “So, what’s going on with you and my sister?”

“What do you mean?”

“You’re not telling me you’re just friends. She looks to you for protection, she falls asleep holding your hand, she kisses you goodnight.”

“Just a peck on the cheek,” James protested, his hand unconsciously going to the spot at the reminder.

“In the last two years she’s never voluntarily touched another man. You’ve been the only one outside of family she’s let close. And even then she’s rarely initiated physical contact. So something’s changed.”

James swirled his drink in the glass. “Nothing’s changed. As far as she’s concerned I’m her friend. In fact I think I may have moved into ‘just like another brother’ status.” He sounded depressed at the idea.

“Is that a bad thing?”

“No, of course not.”

“But …?”

“But nothing. If she wants a friend then that’s what she’s got.”

“What about you?”

“What about me?”

Charles didn’t answer straight away. Instead he got up and replenished the glasses. “How many years have we known each other?”

James looked up, wondering at the change of subject “Oh, I don’t know, twelve? fourteen?”

“A long time, anyway.”

“Yes.”

“I’ve never seen you in love before.”

“I …” James looked up to deny it, but met his friend’s direct gaze. “I’ve never been in love before.” He admitted.

He looked back down at his drink. “But I’ll settle for friendship.”

Charles opened his mouth to say he might not have to, but then closed it again. He could be wrong and, anyway, it was probably best not to interfere.

Most unseasonal I know ...

“Gloria in excelsis Deo!
Pax per aedes hominum!
In excelsis! In excelsis!
In excelsis gloria!”

Jack opened the door to the carol singers with a broad smile.

“Happy Christmas Grandpappa!” cried Emmie, swiftly echoed by the others as he stood back and allowed them to troop into the house. They were soon divested of their winter outer layers and chattering excitedly in the salon.

Jo and Anna were busy in the kitchen, Len helping them, and various other people appearing to see if there was anything they could do.

“You can put the serviettes on the table.” (Marie and Rob); “Will you check your father has sorted out the wine?” (Geoff); “Make sure Marie and Rob don’t pull the cloth off the table in their excitement.” (Phil); “Get out from under our feet and, if you must do something, get the sherry ready for pre-dinner drinks.” (Jack).

Eventually the chaos was put into some kind of order and everyone, including Anna, congregated to have a glass of sherry (or apple juice for the younger ones) before, with much laughter, they sat down for dinner.

“Ooooooh! I’ve found something!” All attention turned to Jackie at the exclamation.

“What is it?” asked Emmie excitedly.

Jackie carefully removed the pudding from around it. “It’s a ring!”

“That means you’re going to get married.” Rosie told her.

“I don’t want to get married – boys are horrid.”

“Well you’re going to have to now ‘cos you found the ring!”

Phil interrupted what promised to be a long argument.

“Well, if you don’t want it, maybe you should give it to Uncle Geoff.”

“Why?”

“Are you getting married then Uncle Geoff?” asked Emmie with interest.

All eyes had turned to Geoff who glared at his twin, only to have his look returned with a sweet smile. “You said you didn’t know the right time to announce it.” she said in an undertone “Now seemed quite opportune.”

“Thanks for your help!”

“You’re welcome.”

Geoff realised everyone (except Rob who was taking advantage of everybody’s distraction to dip his finger into the jug of cream) was still looking expectantly at him.

“Well, yes I am going to get married, Emmie.”

Well someone (she knows who she is!) has been talking to my bunnies about it and feeding them ideas Very Happy

“Who to?”

“When?”

“What’s she like?”

“Did you get on one knee to propose?”

“What do you want to get married for? Girls are silly.” (cue a predicatable side-argument between Alex and Rosie)

“When’s the wedding? Can we all come?”

“When will we get to meet her?”

The barrage of questions fired at him by his nieces and nephews was overwhelming. Geoff sat there waiting until Jo shushed them all and there was quiet. Everyone (except Rob, who had managed to reach the sugar and was helping himself to a spoonful) was waiting to hear the answers.
