Yes he has plenty, but if you're thinking of asking him out he might be rather on the rebound at the moment Wink

Sorry, I meant to say Kester. Embarassed That was pretty stupid of me. I don't want to ask him out - I've already got my own SLOC - but I just thought he kept on called out to work.

“Are you sure you want me back again next weekend?” Juliette said when Felicity phoned her a couple of days later. “I don’t want to intrude on you, you know.”

“You’re not intruding. I’ve just invited you haven’t I? I wouldn’t do that if I didn’t want to.”

“Well, alright then.” Juliette agreed without difficulty. For some reason, she was finding her flat more and more lonely these days, and she enjoyed her visits to Broadwell. All the more when a certain doctor was there as well, a voice whispered in her head, although it was good just to see Felicity and Emilia and Anthony too.

Dear Felicity,

Could you please ensure those two are alone without interruptions?

Thank you

Felix sighed and put down the book. Maybe it was silly of him to have decided to read it, but Ellie had got her name from it and somehow, reading it helped him to feel closer to her.

He still didn’t understand why she’d gone. He’d been so careful after that kiss not to do anything to put pressure on her, had been friendly just as he had been before that disastrous night at the ball. He remembered how she had looked that night, the way she had smiled as they had talked, the feel of her in his arms as they danced, the look in her eyes just before they had been interrupted. Then he remembered the anguish on her face as he had said goodbye.

He had not thought he’d see her again after that night. Not once he knew she was married.

Then Alistair had come along, Ellie’s husband, and he had found out the truth about Ellie’s marriage. It had hurt that she had not trusted him enough to tell him about it. If only he had known from the beginning then … no, he didn’t think anything could have stopped him falling in love with her, any more than finding out she was married had stopped him from loving her, but at least he would have known from the start and not have hoped for more than he could have.

And now? Well now she was gone from his life. But if she weren’t, what would he do? She was still newly widowed, but maybe he would be able to hope. Maybe one day there would be a chance? Or even just the opportunity to be in her company as friends would be better than nothing. But not now. Now she was gone and he had no idea where or how to find her.

Ellie finished the last page of her book, then turned back to the front page. To Felix on achieving his doctorate read the dedication. Her finger traced the handwritten words underneath. To my Lady Galadriel, with thanks for your friendship and memories of a wonderful autumn in the Tirol. Felix. She remembered the moment he had given it to her as they drifted on the lake after he had rowed her out to see the Dripping Rock.

She looked at it for a long time, then sighed. Why was it that doing the right thing hurt so much. Felix’s career was safe, and she was glad of that, but she missed him so much. Missed the gentle tone of his voice when he called her Lady Galadriel, or the laughter as he recounted a tale of his nieces or nephews latest mischief. Missed the way he had looked at her – she had tried to ignore it, to tell herself the look in his eyes was wishful thinking on her part – until the ball she hadn’t admitted it to herself, but then she had known. She would have kissed him if they had not been interrupted. She remembered the kiss they had shared after Alistair died. Her sorrow had been wiped away for that magical moment.

Afterwards she had begun to hope that despite the way she had misled him he would forgive her. He had been so kind and helpful in the following days, although that embrace had not been repeated. But if she had been able to stay, maybe it could have been. She couldn’t stay though, not when doing so would hurt him, would hurt his career. She couldn’t bear to think of him loving someone else, but she hoped for his sake that he would get over her and be happy.

She knew she would love him for the rest of her life.

Crying or Very sad Oh *why* does it have to be like this. And What is it about Alistairs family that means that her letting him know how much she loves him would ruin his career? That is assuming its the threats that are the problem of course. Confused

Thanks Liz

“waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!” Emilia’s wails reached Juliette’s ears as soon as she got out of the car on Saturday morning. She was let into the house by a harried-looking Felicity, the wails still continuing.

“I don’t know what’s wrong with her.” she said, dispensing with a proper greeting. “She just won’t stop screaming. I haven’t been able to do a thing all morning. She’s clean, dry, comfortable as far as I can see. She’s been fed and doesn’t want more. She’s not got wind. I’ve tried leaving her down, picking her up, playing with her, leaving her with her toys, bouncing, rocking, everything and she just won’t stop!”

“You poor thing.” exclaimed Juliette. “Do you want me to take her for a while?”

“Well, if you’re sure you want to?”

“Of course. Come to Auntie Juliette, precious.” She lifted Emilia from Felicity’s arms. For a moment the cries ceased, but, before Felicity could finish her sigh of relief, they started again. “How long’s she been like this for?”

“It feels like forever.” Felicity answered. “But she was fine at breakfast time, so it can’t really have been that long.”

Juliette walked up and down the lounge, jiggling Emilia and singing softly in her ear. Emilia looked at her and screamed determinedly on. “I’ll try this for a while. You go and get on with whatever you need to do.”

“Are you sure?”

“Well it can’t get any worse, can it?” Juliette asked reasonably. “Or if it does, you’ll know about it and can come to my rescue.”

“Okay – I’ll be upstairs cleaning the bathroom and so on.”

Juliette continued pacing, rubbing Emilia’s back gently, wondering if the cries were quieting only to have her hopes dashed as they crescendoed again, drowning out the sound of the Hoover from upstairs. After a while, she gave up pacing and stood swaying gently from side to side, studying the titles of the books on the bookshelves, singing softly again and, this time, it seemed to be working. The cries were slightly less insistent and interspersed with the occasional gulp. Emilia’s eyelids drooped, opened again with a slightly louder cry, then drooped again. “You’ve tired yourself out with all that screaming, haven’t you sweetie.” murmured Juliette, turning away from the bookcase.

She jumped to see Kester standing in the doorway, watching her with a look in his eyes that made her feel warm from head to toe. How long had he been standing there?

“Nobody heard my knock – not that I’m surprised with that noise – and the door was ajar so I just came in.” he said, coming further into the room.

“Fliss is upstairs.” Juliette told him, wondering why it was so hard to find coherent words to say as he drew nearer.

“I’ll go up and say hello in a moment,” he said. He looked at her as she smiled tenderly down at the still-fighting-sleep, but gradually quieting Emilia. Should he wait and hope they were on their own again, or should he say something now?

“Juliette?”

Emilia hiccupped and renewed her wails.

Kester stepped closer and carefully took Emilia from Juliette’s aching arms. “You,” he said speaking firmly to her above her cries, “have obviously inherited your Auntie Margot’s devil.” he paused and Emilia looked up at him with big eyes. “Well I can tell you now that you can do your worst, but nothing is going to stop me this time, so you may as well close your eyes and go to sleep and let me get on with it.”

Emilia gulped and her eyelids fluttered shut. Kester waited a moment or two longer, just to make sure, then gently laid her down in the play pen. She didn’t stir.

He turned back to Juliette who had sunk onto the sofa. “How did you manage that?” she asked in wonder.

“I have no idea,” he admitted, “but now we have some peace and quiet I don’t intend to waste a moment of it.”

He took a deep breath. “Juliette. I have been wanting to ask you for a long time now, but fate, particularly in the form of Emilia, keeps intervening. This time, I swear, if the house falls down about our ears it will not stop me from saying what I have to say.” The look in her eyes encouraged him to continue. “I could make a whole speech, I did try to think of one, but I’m not good with words like my cousins, or Anthony. It all comes down to one very simple thing, anyway.”

He knelt down and took her hands in his. “I love you. So much I can’t begin to put it into words. Will you marry me?”

He had his answer from the radiant look on Juliette’s face before he heard her say the word. “Yes.”

“You will?”

“I will.”

The sound of the Hoover stopped and a moment later Felicity appeared in the doorway. “It’s all gone quiet. Is …” She tailed off as she saw them in each others' arms, cast a quick look at Emilia, who was now sleeping peacefully, and went back upstairs, smiling.

“Okay you two, time to stop talking and go to sleep.” Catherine spoke firmly and Rosie pulled a face but lay down quietly.

“Just another 10 minutes Auntie Catherine.” Jackie pleaded.

“No. You’ve already had one extra 10 minutes. You can lie down now and be quiet and go to sleep.”

“But I’m not tired.”

“Well lie down quietly anyway and say your 17 times table to yourself – in your head so you don’t disturb Rosie.”

“Okay, but what do I do when I’ve finished that.”

Catherine restrained her grin; she doubted Jackie would get that far. “Go on to your 18 times table of course. Now come on Jackie, or I shall get into trouble with your mother for keeping you up.”

“Alright.” Jackie reluctantly turned over, starting her tables. She got to 8 x 17, worked out it was 2753, and fell asleep.

Catherine went back downstairs to join Mollie. She was ‘babysitting’ while Reg took Len out for the evening to celebrate their twentieth wedding anniversary. Mollie looked up from her book as she came in. “I don’t envy you having to try to shut those two up!”

“Well, hopefully they will from now on, or they’ll find I can be just as bad as Matey ever was.” Catherine grinned.

Mollie who could remember being spoilt rotten by ‘Auntie Gwynneth’ but had heard plenty of tales of her reign as the terror of the school giggled. “I remember you had to do that to me once. Only once though!” She returned to her reading and Catherine picked up her book. Silence ensued.

Mollie put down her book a while later with a sigh. “I don’t understand them.”

Catherine looked up from trying to work out who murdered Rhisiart. “Don’t understand who?”

“Elizabeth and Mr Darcy. I mean, she knows he loves her ’cause he’s told her and proposed already. So why doesn’t she just let him know that she’s in love with him too now?”

“Well in that society Lydia’s behaviour would be enough to make anyone associated with her family looked down on.” Catherine answered.

“But if you love someone it doesn’t matter.” Mollie argued. “I mean, if, say, Auntie Phil did something scandalous and everybody knew about it, that wouldn’t stop Dr James from loving you, would it?”

“Dr James?” Catherine looked at her wide-eyed and startled.

“Yes. Mum says he’s desperately in love with you, and nothing can change that can it?” Mollie looked at her aunt, unaware of the bombshell she’d just dropped. “Well if you loved someone, can you think of anything that would stop you loving them?”

“No, I can’t.” said Catherine after a long pause.

“And if you fell in love with Dr James, or someone else you knew was in love with you, you would tell him wouldn’t you. I mean you know he loves you, so there’d be nothing to stop you telling him would there?”

“No, I suppose not.” said Catherine rather faintly.

“So why can’t Elizabeth just tell Mr Darcy?” finished Mollie in exasperation, and turned her attention back to Jane Austen.

Catherine’s head whirled at Mollie’s artless revelation. Was James in love with her? Surely not! But it seemed Len thought so, and Len was usually right about these things. Look at how she’d predicted Erica and Steve, Ruey and Maurice, Daphne and Simon … the list went on and on.

Which just left the question.

What was she going to do about it?

“Daddy?” the voice from the bedroom doorway had Mike roused at once, Laura following his example slightly more slowly. “Daddy, Quim’s being sick everywhere.”

They were both out of bed immediately, forgetful of slippers as they hurried to Quim’s bedroom. Bella had not exaggerated. Poor little Quim was sitting up in bed, his supper slowly soaking into the covers, as he vomited again. Mike was over by him in an instant, rubbing his back and talking soothingly to him, while Laura hurried off to return with a bowl, although she doubted there was much more to come up. There was a little though, and once Quim had finished retching, Mike lifted him out of bed and carefully removed his pyjamas, sponged him down and dressed him in a clean pair, while Laura stripped the bed and made it up again with clean sheets.

“I’m sorry Daddy,” said Quim, miserably as Mike laid him back on the fresh sheets.

“That’s ok, Quim, you just rest. Does your tummy still hurt?”

Quim nodded.

“Well, you just lie there quietly. Would you like me to stay until you go back to sleep?” Quim nodded again. “Ok, I’ll do that, now close your eyes, and maybe some sleep will help you feel better.”

“Mummy-Laura stay too?” whispered Quim.

“Yes, of course darling, she’s just going to tuck Bella up and then we’ll both sit here with you until you’re fast asleep. We’ll leave the bowl just by you here, in case you need it again, and you call us if you wake up and your tummy is still bad.”

Quim nodded again and waited until he saw Laura come back into the room and sit down before he closed his eyes. Under the anxious gazes of his parents he slowly drifted off to sleep, and once they were sure he was sound asleep they crept quietly from the room, leaving the doors to that and for their bedroom open so they would be able to hear if he called.

“Poor Quim, it’s not like him to be sick,” Mike spoke in a low voice as he pulled some clean pyjamas from a draw.

“I expect it’s just a tummy bug, he’s not eaten anything unusual that we know of.” Laura reassured him.

“You’re probably right. He’ll no doubt be bounding around full of energy in the morning.” Mike switched off the light and climbed into bed beside her. “Let’s hope so, anyway.”

Mike and Laura’s hopes were not to be fulfilled. About an hour and a half after they had gone to sleep, they were roused once more, by a call from Quim. He had managed to grab the bowl in time and was sitting with his head bent over it as they rushed into the room. This time Laura sat next to him and rubbed his back for him, pushing the damp hair back off his forehead, noticing how warm he felt as she did so. When Quim had finished Mike took the bowl and returned it rinsed clean, while she wiped his face and hands and tucked him back into bed.

Twice more they had to get up to him in the night, although the last time he was retching painfully on nothing. Eventually he slept, and was so fast asleep he didn’t stir when Mike gently kissed him before he left for work in the morning.

It's not up to me - it's the bunny that does it Twisted Evil

Laura kept a close eye on Quim and he spent most of the morning sleeping. Around midday he woke up and asked for something to eat. Unfortunately the dry biscuit and water Laura gave him brought on another bout of retching and vomiting, so after that she restricted him to sips of water, which he managed to keep down, and he slept again.

She had just checked on him again and returned to the kitchen, where she was taking the sheets out of the washing machine when she heard a familiar sound. Grabbing a bowl, she hurried from to the playroom, where she found Bella bent over the lego box. As soon as she had the opportunity she substituted the bowl for the box, and when the sickness was over, carried the little girl upstairs, undressed her, sponged her down and put her in pyjamas, before tucking her up in bed.

She had just finished filling the lego box with disinfectant and boiling hot water when she had to hurry back upstairs again, Quim had tried to go and see his sister to make sure she was alright and had got as far as the bedroom doorway before his legs gave way under him and he sank down onto the ground with a wail. By the time he had been comforted and convinced that he would get better and his legs would walk properly again, Bella needed her attention again, and so it continued, back and forth between the two for the next couple of hours.

She greeted the sound of the door open with an exclamation of “Thank goodness you’re home! Bella has got whatever Quim has got, poor little things. I think they’re both sleeping at the moment, but they’ve both had a rather rough afternoon of it. They’ll be pleased to have you home – Bella was asking for you earlier.” She added as she came into the hallway and kissed him hello.

“I’ll run up and see them.” he said, as he put down his briefcase. “Then I’ll pop out and get us a takeaway for dinner, to save you cooking – you look tired sweetheart.”

“That would be a great help – thank you Mike.” Laura gave him another kiss before he took the stairs two at a time to check on the twins. They were both sleeping quietly, so he picked up Bella’s teddy and put it back on the bed next to her, and softly went back downstairs.

The two of them had a quiet evening, listening to the radio and eating the takeaway Mike brought home. The twins woke up briefly and drank a little water each before falling back asleep, and the family spent a peaceful night.

By the following morning, Quim was feeling more alert and wanting to get up, although when he did he found his legs were like jelly. Mike carried him downstairs and settled him on the sofa before he went to work.

It wasn’t long before Mike returned. Laura was startled to hear the sound of the front door open, and hurried out into the hallway to see him standing leaning against the doorframe, his face a delicate shade of green.

“Oh Mike, not you too! Come on my love, let’s get you upstairs to bed.” She ushered him upstairs, where he lurched for the bathroom, getting there just in time.

It was a while before Laura had him tucked up in bed, and then she did the round of her other patients – Bella was awake and wanting a story, so she carried her downstairs so she could entertain her and Quim together.

Mike alternated between sleeping and vomiting for the rest of the day, and spent the following morning in bed resting, managing to get up and stagger downstairs in the afternoon, to the delight of the twins, who snuggled up to him on the sofa.

Quim was now fully recovered and had been energetically playing the whole morning, Bella was still slightly wobbly, but was fast catching up with him. Mike’s presence stopped them from being too boisterous, however, and, as he intended, gave Laura the chance for a break, although despite his protests he couldn’t stop her from spending the time changing the bedclothes, and cleaning upstairs. Eventually he persuaded her to sit down with them for a while, before she went to make toast for them all, and then put the twins to bed.

“You’ve been working too hard taking care of us all.” Mike told her, putting his arm around her as she sat down on the sofa.

“Well, I could hardly just leave you all to be sick!” she protested.

“No, I suppose not, but now that we’re all better, you make sure you get some rest, you look tired.”

“Nothing that a good night’s sleep won’t cure.” She told him. “You ought to have an early night too, to finish off your recovery.”

“Yes doctor!” grinned Mike, who was looking and feeling more alive after the day’s rest and a little food. “Come on, sweetheart, leave the clearing up to the morning for once and let’s get that early night. At least you somehow managed to avoid this bug.” he added as he followed her up the stairs.

THat sounds as though it could merit the title of 'Famous Last Words'. On the positive side though, it does seem to be a twenty-four hour thing, and the children are recovering pretty fast.

Thank you for the the latest developments.

I've never managed to nurse children through a 24 hour bug without going down with it myself... so I think it could be inevitable Confused

I hope in this case Laura is lucky!

Am very glad that it is a 24 hour thing. Now, do they get their surprize of an illness which appears the same, but isnt really an illness or not? That really *is* a question worth noting - seeing as everyone else has suffered from it!

Just make sure you let the lego all dry out completely, Laura, or it goes really smelly. (No, my boys didn't use it for a sick box, the 2 year old sat in it with no nappy on...)

Famous last words. Mike thought to himself when he awoke the next morning to find an empty space in the bed next to him and a familiar sound coming from the bathroom. He got out of bed, finding his legs were still a little shaky, and went to find Laura. She was just rinsing out her mouth and he helped her back to bed and tucked her up, before going to find a bowl to leave handily next to her. He was pleased to discover that once they’d got going, his legs were behaving more normally, and having left her to sleep, went downstairs to tidy things before the twins got up.

Quim and Bella were very distressed when they heard Laura was now sick, and Mike had to promise them they could go to see her as soon as she woke up again. As they waited they got more and more subdued, and Mike was worried they might be sickening again, as they hardly ate any breakfast. Bella went to sit in the big armchair cuddling her teddy bear while Quim looked at a book without turning the pages. There was no sign of any sickness or temperature though, and they both said they were feeling alright when asked.

When sounds from upstairs indicated Laura had awoken a couple of hours later, Mike hurried up to see her. He found her lying back against the pillows, looking wan and exhausted after another bout of sickness, and after removing the bowl, gently brushed a lock of sweat-soaked hair back from her face.

“Do you feel up to seeing Quim and Bella?” he asked, “They’ve been wanting to see you since they got up.”

“Of course I’ll see them.” Laura answered, struggling to sit up, and grateful for Mike’s support as he held her and piled the pillows up for her to lean against. By the time she was settled they could hear a pair of footsteps coming up the stairs, and then the twins appeared in the doorway, looking at her with worried eyes.

“Come in and say hello to Mummy-Laura then,” said Mike, “but be careful because she’s still got an upset tummy.”

The twins needed no further invitation and approached the bed, each taking one of her outstretched hands. Bella looked at her worriedly while Quim buried his head in the bedcovers.

“What’s the matter?” asked Laura, who was used to seeing this kind of behaviour when they had something to confess to, although the look in Bella’s eyes didn’t quite match that.

“We don’t want you to be ill.” Bella told her, and burst into tears, anything further she would have said, lost in her sobs. Quim still had his head buried in the covers. Laura looked helplessly at Mike.

“Okay, you two,” he said, lifting them onto the bed one by one, then sitting down himself, “what’s brought this on?” The twins said nothing, although Bella scooted closer to Laura, and Quim nestled his head against her leg. “If you don’t tell us, we can’t do anything to help, can we?” he added.

Quim looked up and managed a reply.

“Frau Ehrlich told us our first Mummy went to heaven because she was ill. We don’t want you to go to heaven, Mummy-Laura. We want you to stay with us.”

Laura felt tears come to her own eyes. “Of course I’m not going to leave you. I’ve just got a tummy bug like you had, and I’ll soon be all better just like you and Daddy are.”

Bella brightened up a bit at that, but Quim was still dubious. “You don’t want to go to live with the angels?”

“No, I’d much rather stay here with you and Bella.” Laura assured him and was rewarded with a brilliant smile.

“A-hem.” Mike cleared his throat.

“And Daddy of course.”

She put her arms round them and hugged them gently, before falling back against the pillows feeling washed out. Mike took his cue.

“Right, now we’ve established that, let’s leave Mummy-Laura to rest so she can get better shall we.”

“It’s horrid when you’re ill Mummy-Laura.” Bella said as they scrambled off the bed. “I want you to get better soon.”

“I’m going to paint you a picture to help make you better.” Quim announced.

“That would be lovely, thank you sweetheart.”

“I’m going to do one too.” Bella did not want to be outdone.

“Come on then you two, let’s get downstairs and start painting.” Mike bent over and dropped a kiss on Laura’s forehead, tucked the covers around her, and followed them out of the room.

“You can open your eyes now.”

Felicity removed her hands from her face and looked up. “Oh Juliette!” she sighed, as her friend turned slowly in front of her.

“Is it ok?”

“Okay? It’s beautiful. You’re beautiful.”

“Really?”

“Yes, really, Kez won’t know what’s hit him when he sees you.”

Juliette smiled. “It’s a shame Emilia’s not a bit older, she could have held my train.”

“Well, you could always wait a few years.” Felicity suggested with a grin.

“Thanks, but I’d prefer not to,” Juliette giggled, “I rather think Kez might have something to say on the matter too.”

“He might at that,” admitted Felicity. “So ... fourteenth June is only two and half weeks away. Any pre-marital nerves?”

“Only the ones about the car not starting, or tripping and sprawling flat on my face as I walk down the aisle. But about marrying Kester – no, not a single one.” Juliette looked down at the diamond on her finger with a smile. “It’s just so right, Fliss, you know?”

Felicity smiled in perfect understanding. “I know.”

Catherine had taken her time reaching this decision. And then had waited for her opportunity. Charles was jetting off to Australia and James was coming round for the evening. She took extra care with cooking dinner, concentrating hard to distract herself from the butterflies in her stomach. It was a big gamble. What if Mollie had got it wrong and James wasn’t in love with her. How would he react? She knew he wouldn’t laugh, but what if it put a strain on their friendship? Was it worth taking the risk?

No, she couldn’t back out of her decision now. She was going to tell him she loved him.

James noticed that Catherine was rather quiet throughout dinner, but didn’t ask any questions until they had finished, washed up, and were settled in comfortable chairs with coffee.

“So what’s bothering you?” he asked, conversationally, clinking his cup into the saucer.

“Nothing,” replied Catherine quickly.

“C’mon I know you better than that. Something’s on your mind. I’m not being nosy, but if you want to tell me then go ahead.”

“How do you know?” asked Catherine, stalling for a moment.

“Catherine, I’ve known you for nearly 3 years. You don’t sit here with coffee and not suggest humiliating me with some innocent-sounding board game, unless there’s something bothering you. But you know I’m not going to pester you to tell me. Just as long as you know the offer’s there if you want it.”

Catherine stared at her coffee for a long time. James picked up the paper and considered the crossword clues, leaving it up to her whether to tell him whatever was disturbing her. He had just concluded that she wasn’t ready to tell him yet when she spoke.

“Whatever happens, we’ll always be friends won’t we?”

“Of course we will.” He put the paper down.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

Another long pause. Then she looked up and met his eyes.

“I love you.”

The silence, broken only by the ticking of the clock, seemed to be endless.

James had only imagined how it would feel to hear her say those words and it came nothing close to the reality. Then he came back to earth with a thud. “Catherine …” he paused, trying to find the right words to say without hurting her.

For one moment, Catherine had thought from the expression on his face that Mollie and Len had been right and he did love her. But then the look had gone and the tone of his voice was not encouraging.

“I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have said anything.” She looked down.

“No, it’s ok.” James’ voice was very gentle. “But …”

“I won’t mention it again. We can still be friends, can’t we?”

“Of course we’re still friends – didn’t I promise that nothing would change that?”

“Okay then.” she smiled a bright smile that didn’t reach her eyes and made him long to take her in his arms and kiss the unhappiness away. But he knew she was mistaken. She didn’t see any other men, so it was natural she would think she had feelings stronger than friendship for him. She was mistaking close friendship for love. A tiny part of him whispered ‘So what? Take what you can get.’ but he resisted it. It wouldn’t be right to exploit her vulnerability for his own happiness.

Thanks, Liz. Why can't James see that he and Catherine seriously are meant to be together? Men!

I was chatting to a man I liked that I also worked with, and after working up the courage, I said, 'Do you like me?' He replied 'Yes'. I then said, 'Not in that way,' meaning that I wanted to know if he liked me as more as a friend. He suddenly said 'Tea break!' and hurried off!

Fortunately, we got together a week later and we're still together two and a half years later!

As if on cue ...

“My flight was cancelled.” Charles said walking into the room to find them concentrating fiercely on the chessboard. He sat down to watch the game, saying nothing about the tension he had immediately noticed in the room, although he wondered what had happened.

A few more moves and the game was over. Catherine got up with a yawn. “I’m tired. I think I’ll get off to bed. Good night.” she barely waited for their response before she was out of the room.

Charles waited until he heard the sound of her bedroom door close.

“She gave you that game.”

“I know. Couldn’t wait to get away, could she?”

Charles got up and poured a couple of drinks.

“Have this,” he said thrusting it at James, “and tell me all about it.”

James knocked back the whisky in a way Charles hadn’t seen him do for years, and held out the glass for a refill. Charles provided it before putting the bottle away.

“So…” he said encouragingly.

“She said that she loves me.”

“And that’s thrown you into the depths of despair because … ?”

“She doesn’t know what she’s talking about. How can she? She has nobody to compare me with; she doesn’t see any other men apart from all you in her family. Of course she thinks she’s in love with me, it’s only natural in the circumstances, but if she had the chance to meet more men she’d realise the difference between close friendship and being in love.”

“You don’t think she might actually be in love with you?”

“No. I know she’s not. Catherine has always treated me in the same way, as a friend. I know how women in love behave, and she doesn’t show any of the signs.”

“Not even losing to you at chess when she was well on the way to beating you?”

“I’d upset her. She just wanted to get away. But she’ll get over it. She’ll realise she mistook her feelings, and things will just carry on as normal.”

“Will they?” Charles raised an eyebrow.

“Yes – just wait and see.”

Coming very soon Robin.

When after a few days Laura was still being sick, while Mike and the twins were fully recovered, he insisted on calling in a doctor.

“Yes, I know you’re a doctor, sweetheart, but you’re hardly in a fit state to treat yourself are you?”

“You’re just being a fusspot – it’s only a tummy bug.”

“Well I’d rather be a fusspot and take extra care of you.” Mike told her, dropping a kiss on her forehead. “The doctor will be here about eleven, try and rest until then.”

“Okay.”

… …

The doctor came and examined her and asked her a few questions, then put his instruments away and turned to give his verdict.

“Well, Mrs Maynard, your husband and children may have had a tummy bug, but you certainly haven’t.”

“I haven’t?”

“No.” he smiled. “You’ve been suffering from morning sickness. Congratulations Mrs Maynard, you’re pregnant.”

... ...

Mike showed the doctor out, then making sure the twins were happily putting together a jigsaw puzzle ran upstairs to see Laura.

“What did the doctor say?” he asked anxiously, "are you alright?”

“He says I’m fine and there’s nothing wrong with me.” Laura answered with a smile. “Oh, Mike, after all these months, I can’t believe it didn’t occur to me. It’s morning sickness.”

“Morning sickness? You mean … ?”

“Yes. We’re going to have a baby!”

Mike hugged her tightly to him, so happy he thought he would burst.

It seemed that James was right about things getting back to normal – or almost normal, Charles thought a couple of weeks later. Catherine had come down to breakfast the following morning pale and puffy-eyed, but had said nothing about the previous evening. The next couple of times James had been round she had been rather quieter than usual, but now they were both smiling and teasing each other as they had always done.

Except, sometimes Charles saw a wistfulness in Catherine’s eyes when she looked at James that revealed an emotion much deeper than friendship.

Except that when she wasn’t looking at him, James’ eyes sometimes rested on Catherine with a look so intense that it nearly took Charles’ breath away.

Love was supposed to be blind but this was ridiculous! How could either of them believe that the other felt nothing but friendship?

Charles sighed as he realised this nut was going to be much tougher to crack than Mike and Laura had been.

The church was crammed with friends and relatives as Kevin patted all his pockets in search of the rings. With a grin at his twin he produced them from the inside of his jacket. “As if I’d forget them!”

Kester grinned back. “I’d have taken your own off you if I had to!” Then his nerves returned as he heard a hubbub at the back of the church, and dozens of flashes went off as people took photos. There was a pause then the organ began to play and, her eyes locked with his, Juliette made her way down the aisle.

The ceremony progressed without undue incident and Juliette Gray became Juliette Russell.

The congregation rose as the couple made their way back down aisle. Glancing across after they had gone past, Felicity caught sight of a familiar face and stifled an exclamation. She heard a sharp intake of breath from beside her and realised Felix had seen her too.

How did Ellie come to be here?

Somehow, despite the press of guests outside the church Felix managed to manoeuvre his way close to Ellie and he softly laid a hand on her shoulder. “Ellie.”

Ellie heard his voice and spun round hardly believing it could be true.

“Felix!”

“What are you doi…” they both began and once and stopped and were silent.

“All the groom’s relatives please,” called the photographer, and Joseph appeared next to him.

“Come on, Uncle Felix, Great Uncle Jem sent me to fetch you.”

“I …”

“Come on …”

“Please don’t go before we can talk.” Felix begged as Joseph tugged him away and he turned his head to keep his eyes on her until somebody blocked his view.

Felix felt a surge of relief as he saw Ellie standing towards the end of the reception line.

He only half-listened to a lady in salmon pink as she gushed over her memories of him and Felicity as babies, watching as Ellie was hugged warmly by Juliette before Kester shook her hand with a smile.

Felix seized on the opportunity when the salmon-pink lady stopped to draw breath. “Well, it’s lovely to see you,” he said politely, “but if you will excuse me, I must go and say hello to Ailie, I’ve not seen her since Auntie Hilda’s funeral.” He smiled and walked away, leaving the lady thinking what a charming young man he had grown into.

Felix crossed the room, heading towards where Ailie was handing out glasses of sherry, timing his journey so his arrival would coincide with Ellie’s.

He was almost there when they were requested to find their seats for the wedding breakfast and Ellie was led away, while his company was claimed by Ruey and Maurice.

Throughout the meal Felix had to content himself with knowing that Ellie was still there and he took a little encouragement from the fact that she hadn’t disappeared.

Once the meal and speeches were over, and the band was preparing to play, he sought her out. “Ellie, please, can we talk?”

“Yes.” She probably shouldn’t, but she couldn’t resist the opportunity to spend time with him. And she owed him an apology at least.

They found a secluded corner and sat down.

“How are you?” asked Felix, unsure what else to say.

“I’m fine.” Ellie answered, then before Felix could argue the point she continued. “Felix, thank you for all you did for me … when … with Alistair.”

“I was glad to help.” Felix answered. “Ellie, why did you leave so suddenly?”

“I just had to go. Alistair was gone and it suddenly struck me I should be back here organising his funeral and all that sort of thing.” She couldn’t meet his eyes as she answered.

There was a pause. Felix knew she hadn’t told him the truth and was hurt. Why not? Didn’t she trust him? Hadn’t their friendship at least meant she could be honest with him?

Ellie spoke again. “I’m sorry for not saying goodbye properly. Once I knew I had to go, I had to leave straight away. Otherwise I might not have been able to. But I’m sorry Felix, for everything, I never meant to hurt you.” This time he could hear the truth in her voice.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were married when we first met?”

“I was trying to take a break from it all at the time – Alistair told you about our marriage didn’t he?” Felix nodded. “So I didn’t mention it. It didn’t matter at first – I never thought I’d fall in love. Then when I did, it was too late to say anything. I just wanted to make the most of your company, your friendship. I thought that was all you wanted from me so it wouldn’t do any harm. If I could go back and change things, I would have let you know from the start.”

“It wouldn’t have made a difference. I fell in love with you the moment we met.”

“Felix, I can’t … I mean we can’t … “ she closed her eyes for a moment and took a deep breath. “Felix, I can’t see you again. I’m sorry. We have to say goodbye.”

“But … “

“I can’t explain. I wish I could but I can’t. I wish things were different, but they’re not.”

“You’re sure? This has to be goodbye?”

“It does.”

“Then can we dance – one last time?”

Too choked up to speak she nodded and they rose and moved to the dance floor. Felix holding her close, treasuring this last chance to hold her, wishing the music would never end.

Come on, Ellie - Alistair is dead, thus ending your marriage which was in name only. Although he asked for your help for his last few days, he also gave you his blessing to go ahead with your relationship with Felix - had he lived, he would have divorced you so that you could do this.

At least come to an understanding with Felix that you will resume your relationship with him, even if you want to wait a while before doing so openly, so that it doesn't give rise to gossip.

*Please* make it right for them, Liz.

“So are you two going to be next?”

Geoff and Angela looked at each other, awkwardly. “Well, we haven’t actually set a date yet.” Angela said after a pause.

After a few more pleasantries the lady in salmon pink whose name Geoff wasn’t sure of, although he thought she was a cousin of some kind, moved on, leaving the couple to continue their low-voiced argument.

“I don’t see why you have to do it that way. Can’t you marry me before you finish your course?”

“But then how would I finish – I can hardly live with you in Armishire and study in London can I?”

“I could find a job in London.”

“But I’m settled in the house with Jen and Petra and Sally. I can’t just move out – we’ve signed a contract.”

“There must be some way we could manage it.”

“Well, I don’t want to ‘manage’ it. I want to get a good qualification and I’m not going to do that if as well as studying I’m having to play housewife to you. I’d probably end up pregnant too, which would be a disaster.”

“Having our child would be a disaster?”

“Well think about it. I’d have to quit the course and the last few years would be completely wasted. I just don’t want to settle down right now, so why can’t you just stop pestering me to.”

“Perhaps you’d rather not marry me at all.” Geoff’s face was very white.

“Perhaps I wouldn’t!” Angela turned on her heel and walked off. Geoff looked despairingly after her, his heart lifting as she turned and came back.

He reached out his hand towards her “Angela I …”

“You’d better have this.” she said in a quiet, hard voice and pulled off her engagement ring, dropped it onto his hand and walked away again.

Geoff stared at the ring for a moment. Maybe it was as well he knew her true feelings now. Perhaps he had had a narrow escape. Trying to make himself believe that was the case, he put the ring into his pocket and, making an effort not to spoil the day for anyone else, forced a smile and went to join Phil who was sitting with her new boyfriend, Lance.

He pretended not to notice that Angela spent the rest of the evening laughing and dancing with Tony Rosomon.

Liz - I have just read 12 pages of this and things still aren't sorted out betweeen various couples, in fact it just seems to have got worse with Geoff added in

Ok Juliette and Kester are finally sorted and Laura is pregnant, but there's still plenty to work at - please?

It did bring back rather vivid memories of 3 small kids all being ill. It's not so bad if 1 or more are throwing up in a house, but in a tent on a very basic camp site Rolling Eyes - especially as they then passed it onto me Evil or Very Mad

Ellie and Felix continued for dance after dance, ignoring the fact some tunes were more energetic, wrapped in each other’s arms, each wishing this was not the last time, each determined to remember every moment, to impress every second on their mind to keep them going through the lonely future.

Felix wished Ellie would trust him, would tell him what it was that was stopping them to be together. Didn’t she know he would move mountains to be by her side?

Ellie closed her eyes and wished that things were different. Wished he understood why she had to leave. Wished that there was nothing stopping her from staying in his arms forever.

Ellie left the building, not noticing David and Kevin busy decorating the car standing waiting outside, and made her way along the path that ran along the front of the house. She turned the corner, leant against the wall and closed her eyes to hold back the tears. Walking away a second time was even harder than the first had been, but she had to do it. She couldn’t let the rumours that would follow them ruin Felix’s career. She swallowed hard, struggling for control. A hand touched her shoulder and her eyes flew open.

“I saw you, you trollop! How many times have you sneaked off to meet him you scheming cow!”

“What are you doing here?”

“I’ve been waiting for you to slip up and prove you’re not the innocent widow you claim to be! I knew it was just a matter of time.”

“You’ve been watching me? Why?”

“Because I’m going to prove that you were doing the dirty on Alistair and because of that he died.”

“Alistair was ill, that’s why he died.”

“Helped on by you and that doctor – what did you do, pay him ‘in kind’ for his help?”

“Felix isn’t like that.” Ellie ignored the accusations against herself. “He wouldn’t do anything to hurt anyone. He’s got integrity, not that you’d know what that is, and he’s a brilliant doctor. You can say what you like about me. I don’t care. But you’re not going to ruin his career with your insinuations. You never cared about Alistair when he was alive anyway, so why are you so bothered now he’s gone?”

Pamela stared at her speechless with anger, then with a cry of rage leapt at her, her fingers reaching for Ellie’s throat. Ellie was helpless in her grip, and choked for breath as, with unexpected strength, Pamela’s hands squeezed.

If I remember rightly you threatened various dire and dreadful things would happen to me if I didn't promise there would be no fatal or near-fatal accident for Ellie or Felix - I believe I have kept my word on that Wink

As the door closed behind Ellie, Felix was suddenly galvanised back into action. Weaving his way through the couples on the floor, he strode determinedly after her. She couldn’t go like this. Not with so much still left unsaid.

Felix stopped as he stepped out into the cool evening air and looked around. He caught sight of someone disappearing around the edge of the building and hurried in that direction. As he approached the corner he heard Pamela’s voice and Ellie reply. Wondering what was going on he had paused for a moment, then he had registered just what Pamela was accusing Ellie of. Neither of them had noticed him turn the corner, and he stood there, stopped by the sudden revelation of why Ellie had left, feeling a warm glow inside as Ellie defended him. Then he was aghast as he saw Pamela attack her.

He sprang into action, grabbing the still-screeching Pamela and pulling the murderous grip from Ellie’s throat. The noise brought David and Kevin and one or two other guests running, and he thrust Pamela at David with instructions to hold her and not let her go, and for someone to get the police, while he turned his attention to Ellie, who had sagged into a heap on the ground, gratefully gulping in fresh air.

“Ellie? Ellie my love, speak to me. Ellie, are you alright?” Felix knelt beside her and lifted her to lean against him.

Ellie nodded weakly and managed a whispered "yes".

Pamela struggled against her captors, kicking, scratching and biting and letting forth a stream of oaths and threats. More people came to see what the noise was about and she was soon overpowered and escorted back to the hotel to await the arrival of the police.

Helpful hands reached to pull Ellie to her feet. Felix pushed them away and helped her stand, then when she swayed slightly, swept her into his arms and carried her inside.

“Ellie!” Juliette rushed into the side room as Felix laid Ellie carefully on the sofa. “Ellie, what happened? Are you hurt?”

Ellie reluctantly removed her arms from around Felix’s shoulders, allowing him to straighten up so her friend could reach her side. “I’m sorry for spoiling your wedding day.”

“Don’t be silly! Nothing could spoil my wedding day.” Juliette glanced up and smiled as Kester followed her into the room, then continued to fuss over her friend. “Are you alright?”

“It was Pamela. She … “ Ellie’s voice trailed off as she recalled the feeling of those hands on her throat and she shuddered.

Felix was on his knees next to her, in an instant, his arm around her shoulder as he held a drink to her lips. “Here, sip this.”

Ellie obediently sipped, wincing slightly as she swallowed.

Felix leant over her, his face full of concern. “Don’t try to talk, Ellie. Just rest for a moment.” He smoothed her hair back from her face with a gentle hand and opened his mouth to speak again. Before he could say a word, however, Kevin came into the room.

“Felix, the police are here.”

Pamela was taken off into custody almost immediately. Felix paced anxiously outside the room while Ellie was being questioned, then he was called on to tell of his part in the evening’s events. When he emerged into the hallway he found Ellie on her own, looking ready to leave.

“You’re going?”

She looked round with a start.

“We already said goodbye, Felix. Don’t make me say it again.”

“Do we have to ever say it again?” He crossed the hall and took her hands in his.

“Felix. I can’t …” she tried to pull her hands away, but he gently kept hold of them.

“Because of what she was saying? I heard it all, Ellie. Is that why?” she nodded. “Ellie, it’s all rubbish, you and I both know there’s no truth in it, and so would anybody who knows you.”

“But she said… “

“Ellie, she’s mad with hatred of you. Nobody is going to take what she said seriously. And she tried to kill you. If I hadn’t been there … If she’d succeeded … ” he broke off at the thought and swallowed hard, then continued. “I couldn’t bear it Ellie. I just couldn’t.”

“But what if other people think the same?”

“I don’t care what other people think. I love you with all my heart. My Lady Galadriel. Oh, don’t cry my love.” he raised a hand and gently brushed away the tear that trickled down her cheek. Ellie turned her face and pressed a kiss against his palm.

Felix drew in a breath of hope.

“Ellie…”

“Somebody call for a taxi?”

“That’s my taxi, Felix. I should go.”

“Stay, please?”

“I …” she looked at the taxi driver briefly, then back at Felix, hesitating.

“Please, Ellie. Won’t you give marriage another chance – a marriage of love this time? I don’t want to ever say goodbye to you again.”

“Do you want the taxi, Miss?”

Ellie took two steps towards the door. Felix closed his eyes in despair.

“No. Sorry for calling you out. Here.” She thrust some money at the driver then turned back to Felix who had opened his eyes and was looking at her with eyes full of love and hope.

“Ellie?”

“I don’t want to say goodbye again either.” The words were barely out of her mouth before she was in his arms.

“Then don’t. Say you’ll be with me for always.”

“Forever.” And under the interested gaze of the taxi driver, she sealed the promise with a kiss.

It was a lot later than planned when Juliette and Kester finally left for their honeymoon.

“So, are you regretting marrying into my family, after today?”

“Not in the least. It’s not everyone who can boast of having a broken engagement, attempted murder, police presence, and a new engagement, happening on their wedding day. Although, to be fair, it was my friend who was nearly murdered, so your family can’t take credit for that.”

“Well, at least it made it an unforgettable day.”

“I wouldn’t have forgotten it anyway.”

“And it’s not over yet.” Kester smiled and drew her closer.

Catherine picked up the kettle and poured boiling water into the mugs. “Could you grab the milk?” she asked as she set the kettle back down again. James went over to the fridge while she opened the cupboard and reached up for the sugar bowl.

“There’s none here.”

“I’m sure there is. Here let me come and look.” She turned and walked into the open cupboard door with a force that momentarily brought tears to her eyes. “Ouch!!”

“Are you ok?” James abandoned the fridge and was at her side in an instant. “Come and sit down for a moment.”

She put her hand on his arm, resisting his attempt to move her to a chair. “I’m fine, honestly.”

“Let me at least take a look.”

“Yes, doctor!” Catherine rolled her eyes and stood submissively while his fingers gently ran over her forehead.

“Hmmm. I think you’ll live.”

“I’m glad to hear it.” She smiled up at him and saw the look in his eyes as he gazed down at her. Her heart seemed to stop for a millisecond then started beating triple time.

She raised herself onto tiptoe and pressed her lips gently against his.

James stood motionless as she kissed him, then as she pulled away he lost the battle against his own longing and, with a groan, his arms crushed her against him as his lips came back to hers.

The pent up emotions of months were released in a kiss that could leave neither in doubt of the other’s feelings, and that seemed to go on forever, but finally ended leaving Catherine weak-kneed and trembling and James breathing raggedly.

“Wow!” she said eventually with a smile that made his heart flip-flop again.

“Yes.” he agreed, then decided they had had enough time to recover their breath, and kissed her again.

Charles came home to find Catherine and James sitting on the sofa their arms entwined around each other. They sprang apart as they heard him come into the room, but he merely grinned at them.

“It’s about time you two realised what’s been staring you in the face for months!”

“Well it wasn’t my fault this didn’t happen sooner!” said Catherine, casting a sideways look at James. “If a certain person had just believed me in the first place …”

“You mean a certain person not a million miles away I presume?” asked James with an intent look.

“Yes, somebody quite close.” Catherine answered.

“Somebody very close.” She amended as he reached out and pulled her back into his arms.

Charles smiled and discreetly backed out of the room.

“Anthony?” Felicity’s voice called from the kitchen, where she had gone for a glass of water.

“Yes?” he replied absently, from the comfort of the sofa.

“You remember what you ordered me not to do at Juliette’s wedding?”

“Yes, and just as well really, I think it was eventful enough without you going into …” he appeared in the kitchen doorway a second later full of concern. “Fliss?”

“I think it might be.”

Felcity was right. Soon the phone lines were humming with the news that Phoebe Cecilia Tinlow had made a rather more circumspect entrance into the world than her older sister.

... ...

After they had heard and celebrated the news, Charles slipped quietly out to the kitchen, leaving Catherine and James engrossed in each other.

He would miss Catherine when she went – there was no question in his mind that she would go, it was just a matter of time.

He had lived alone before he and Catherine had moved to the chalet at Laustadt, and was fully self-sufficient. But now he was used to companionship, he wasn’t sure he wanted to go back to a lonely bachelor pad.

A burst of laughter escaped from the living room. That was what he wanted. Someone to laugh with, someone to look forward to coming home to, someone to share the joys and sorrows of life with.

But how was he to find that someone. He travelled the world, met and dated plenty of women, but had never yet found one who could hold his interest for more than a few weeks. None of them had connected with him the way he saw Catherine and James did, or Felicity and Anthony, or Len and Reg. None of them had touched his heart.

With a sigh he scrubbed and rinsed the last pan, wondering if maybe he was destined to spend the rest of his life on his own.

Then as Catherine and James appeared to help, he shook off his introspection and threw a couple of teatowels to them.

There'll be someone out there for you, Charles - just trust in your Liz. Laughing Laughing

Happiness in others does tend to make us introspective, doesn't it, and wonder why the same hasn't happened to us, even when we're happy for them. Wink

“So,” Charles asked James one evening as the two men lazed in the garden, “when are you going to ask her to marry you?”

“I don’t know.”

“You are going to marry her aren’t you?”

“Of course I will if she’ll have me,” he ignored Charles’ snort at this, “but I’m not going to rush her.”

“I think you’ll find she won’t mind.”

“But I mind. I don’t want to look back and realise I rushed her into marriage too quickly. I want her to be able to take her time and not have to do anything before she’s ready for it.”

“I suppose not,” agreed Charles, rather doubtfully, “but how long do you think that will take?”

“I don’t know, but I’ll give her as much time as she needs. I can wait. I love her.”

“Well, I had kind of worked that out.”

Neither of the men was aware that every word of their conversation floated in through the window of the bathroom where Catherine was treating herself to a long, hot, bubblebath.

“Mike, I am fine. I’m pregnant, not ill. You don’t have to do every single thing for me.”

“But you need to rest and take care of yourself.”

“Yes, of course I need to. Some of the time. But I can manage to do the dusting and washing up and things like that. You’re going to exhaust yourself if you insist on me not doing anything and you working all day and doing everything here. Plus I shall go absolutely crazy with nothing to do.”

“I just want to take care of you.” He wrapped his arms around her.

“I know. And I love that you do. But you don’t need to wrap me in cotton wool. I’ll be fine.”

“I know. I know. It’s just …”

“Just what?”

“Nothing.”

Laura said nothing, but looked at him disbelievingly.

“Well, it’s just … Catalina, she was so ill when she was carrying the twins. And then afterwards …”

“Oh Mike, that’s not going to happen again. Doctor van Arndt says I’m perfectly healthy, and so is the baby. There’s nothing to worry about.”

“I know that really. It’s just I couldn’t bear to lose you.”

“You won’t. I'm fine and I won't do anything I shouldn't. I promise.” She leant her head against his shoulder and held him tight.

“Oooooh… let me think… a kiss I think.”

Catherine giggled and paid her forfeit. “This is fun.”

“We could stop playing and just do this?”

“Not yet … let’s play a little bit longer. Your turn.”

James spun the arrow and lost – curiously neither of them had managed to avoid a forfeit throughout the whole game.

“Okay, you have to pay me a forfeit now. I think you should get me a glass of wine.”

“You’re a hard taskmaster!” complained James, getting to his feet. “I think I’m being too soft on you.” He returned shortly with two glasses of wine and handed one to her as he sat back down on the floor.

“My turn then,” Catherine gave the arrow a flick and grinned, “bother!”

“Aha!!! Another forfeit. What shall I make you do this time I wonder?” He rested his chin in his hands in exaggerated thought. “Decisions, decisions ... Yes, I think I have it. You can let your hair loose.” He reached over and carefully pulled out the grips, releasing the soft dark curls to tumble over her shoulders, running his fingers through them as he did so, before returning, reluctantly, to the game.

“What forfeit do you demand this time then?” he asked as the arrow came to rest again.

Catherine took a sip of her wine and carefully put the glass back down.

“Marry me.”

“What?” James stared at her hardly able to believe his ears.

“I want you to marry me. Will you?” She looked at him across the board her eyes shining with love and certainty.

“Are you sure it’s what you want?”

“I’ve never been surer of anything in my life. I love you. I want to be with you. And I don’t want to wait until your silly noble principles about not rushing me are satisfied!”

“Did Charles tell you?”

“No. I heard the two of you talking.” She pushed the board out of the way and shuffled over to him. “You’ve not answered me yet. Will you marry me?”

“Yes, Catherine, I will.”

After a prolonged silence she spoke again. “I don’t want a long engagement either.”

“Whatever you want.”

“Keep agreeing like that and I think we’ll have a very harmonious marriage.”

“Ah, this is just to lull you into a false sense of security. Once that ring is on your finger it could all be very different.”

“Oh yes?”

“Yes.” Another pause. “Speaking of rings. I hope you’re not thinking you’ll get away without one just because you did the proposing. Because you won’t!”

“No?”

“No.”

“Are you being all masterful and manly?” she giggled.

“I most certainly am. Come here wench.”

The wench obeyed and gave a sigh of contentment as he enfolded her in his arms.

The September sun streamed in through the windows, bathing the church with warm, golden light. Standing at the front of the nave, next to his brother, Charles could see his family filling the pews, as they watched.

Felix took Ellie’s right hand in his, his eyes shining. “I, Felix Nicholas, take thee, Galadriel Louisa, to my wedded wife,”

Jack and Jo, their fingers interlinked between them, shared a smile as they remembered the day they had taken these same vows.

“to have and to hold from this day forward,”

Roger put his hand over Melanie’s as she cuddled their son Timothy.

“for better for worse,”

Margot looked at the happiness in their faces, but didn’t regret choosing a different path.

“for richer for poorer,”

Squeezed between Ruey and Maurice, Evelyn watched with wide eyes.

“in sickness and in health,”

Mike sat on one side of Bella and Quim, on promise of best behaviour; Laura glowing with the radiance of an expectant mother sat the other side of them.

“to love and to cherish,”

Mollie, held the flowers carefully, and cast a glance over Rosie, Jackie, Emmie and Marie to make sure they were behaving as bridesmaids should.

“’til death us do part, according to God's holy ordinance;”

Phil smiled to herself and hoped that one day soon she would be standing there with Lance.

“and thereto I plight thee my troth.”

Felix slid the gold band onto Ellie’s finger, his eyes alight with love as he waited for her to respond.

“I, Galadriel Louisa, take thee, Felix Nicholas, to my wedded husband,”

Reg, holding Rick as he stood on his lap to see what was going on, turned to smile at Len.

“to have and to hold from this day forward,”

Steve lifted William from Erica’s arms as he started to wriggle violently.

“for better for worse,”

Juliette gave Kester’s hand a gentle squeeze.

“for richer for poorer,”

Con exchanged a glance with Neil that went unnoticed by Alex, Joseph and Rob, but caused Jamie to roll his eyes.

“in sickness and in health,”

Geoff thought of Angela with a mixture of regret and relief, then put her firmly out of his mind as Roddy nudged him.

“to love, and to cherish,”

Felicity and Anthony, each with a daughter in their arms, nestled a little closer to each other.

“’til death us do part, according to God's holy ordinance;”

Catherine, who had changed her name for the last time a few weeks ago, smiled and slipped her arm round James’ waist.

“and thereto I give thee my troth.”

… …

“You may now kiss the bride.”

Felix carefully lifted the lace veil and gazed intently into Ellie’s eyes, before bending his head to kiss her.

A ripple of contentment made its way around the congregation.

Felix had found love.

Thank you, I've loved reading your drabbles and thought the way you showed so many happy family members at the finished it off beautifully.
What an advert for married life.

*Starts to cultivate a large vegetable plot ready for the next batch of bunnies that need bribing. (subtle hint, hoping for another drabble in the not so distant future!)*

Thanks Liz - that was fanastic, and a lovely shiny ending.

Now you just have to sort out Geoff (with or without Angela), pop star Pippa and her young man, and fine someone for Charles. Enough of a challenge there?

Thanks, Liz. This has been such a brilliant drabble and I would love a sequel as well. I'm sorry it has taken me so long to catch up on this drabble - I was away when this drabble was finished and I hadn't realised I hadn't checked for updates, even though I really loved reading this story. Embarassed Embarassed Embarassed I just thought you were too busy at the moment to carry on with it. I'm really glad there was a happy ending for everyone involved.
